moving the bay area forward this christmas morning, we're going to take a live look to san francisco for a look at all the preparations underway to feed
5:01 am
thousands of community members. plus, assessing the damage cleanup underway in santa cruz after part of the wharf fell into the ocean. the surprising thing the city is saying about the pier's future. and ho ho ho, the gift from santa. a clear morning across the bay area, but this will change later this week. meteorologist kari hall is tracking when that rain is set to return. this is today in the bay. santa gave us the gift of a clear christmas day. but for mother earth. he says i'm bringing rain. yes, a little bit of both. so it kind of helps out. good morning to you on this christmas morning. i'm marcus washington and i'm kira klapper filling in for laura this morning. we want to wish you all a merry christmas. and tonight a happy hanukkah. mike has the morning off, but carrie's here doing it all. and you're giving us all that gift on christmas morning. so it's going to be a nice day. it is chilly out there, but it isll clear. and as we take a look at the clouds
5:02 am
that will start to move into the bay area going into today, it won't yet bring any rain, but it is a part of a bigger storm system that will be arriving late tonight and starting to bring in some of the showers going into the next couple of days. our hour by hour outlook shows that here we are at midnight, and we are going to start to see the rain coming into the north bay, and then looking at our thursday forecast with some spotty showers. but the widespread rain arrives late tomorrow night and continues through friday, as we are going to see another round of heavy rain. so we're going to be tracking that into the next few days. and once again, at least for today, it will be nice and sunny now getting out on the roads this morning. here is a live look at the richmond san rafael bridge. there is not one car out there, and even as we look around the bay area, this is the bay bridge. we have a whole three cars out there right now. and looking at san jose, we can also count the headlights here. so we are going to see
5:03 am
some good driving conditions for you this morning. and the traffic map is all green, which means christmas colors. back to you. we love that kari. thanks. well, we all know it's a holiday tradition. in the spirit of giving that has been going on in san francisco's iconic glide memorial church for more than six decades. we're talking about feeding thousands of people a proper christmas meal today in the bay's thom jensen is live at glide memorial right now in the tenderloin. they are preparing for thousands of visitors. tom, merry christmas to you. what's on the menu today? i know yesterday was prime rib, right? and today is turkey. yeah. oh it's great. good morning. merry christmas to both of you as well. yeah. turkey and ham and veggies. all the trimmings that you'd expect for a holiday meal. and right now we've even got volunteers, workers back here preparing breakfast. so while all of this is going on with that prime rib, christmas eve dinner, and then the christmas
5:04 am
meal today that they're preparing, they're also doing the breakfast that they normally do all the time for folks here in the kitchen working right now. and they're making enough for the christmas meal to feed about 5000 people expecting more than 4000. they already fed about 4000 people in that christmas eve. house of prime prprime rib dinner, about 3,000 pounds of prime rib. they fed hundreds more meals to people in encampments across the city, and organizers say it is all part of that 60 year old tradidition he at glide, giving hope for the holidays. i think what's different this year is the joy and the passion of volunteers. have more people are coming out, more people are in our line. we know that hunger doesn't go away because of the holiday. and so that's what today is all about. volunteer, giving back and serving our community. this is one of the busiest times of the year for glide, but they are giving out hot meals and hope back to the community year
5:05 am
round. they always are looking for volunteers and you can always sign up at. glide.org/volunteers. now the doors open at 10:00 for some holiday festivities here at glide. and then 11:00 is that christmas meal. but they are going to be serving breakfast here starting at 7:00 this morning. so a lot going on on this christmas day. back to you. always good to see, you know, so much giving and so much food. thanks to. tom. thanks. and we are in the final push to nourish our neighbors. you can still donate throughout the day today at your neighborhood safeway. all you have to do is let your checker know that you'd like to donate that $10 to the food drive. they'll scan the ticket and add $10 to your total. that money will provide 20 meals to families in need. by the way, with your help, last year we raised $4.3 million. we'd love to surpass that milestone this year. we are so close to setting a new record. all thanks to you.
5:06 am
the sfmta not moving forward with a plan to add paid parking in the marina and cow hollow neighborhoods. now, that plan would have installed more than 200 parking meters on several streets. those streetsurrently have free two hour parking ots. the city says eliminating free parking would reduce congestion in the neighborhood's shopping district. now, this would also free up parking spots for neighbors by pressuring visitors to pay or leave. but people who live in that neighborhood pushed back, saying that that plan would not work. i'm excited to sit down with the mta, to sit down with the residents and really make sure that we have a plan that that that works for residents first and works for the merchants on the corridors and helps increase our transit options in the neighborhood. the meters would have been paid for by $1.5 million grant. this is for bay area's metropolitan transportation commission. we're going to go back to the cleanup soon underway after parts of the santa cruz wharf collapsed into the ocean on monday. the wharf
5:07 am
is now closed until further notice. city leaders say the danger hasn't totally passed, and they're reminding people to stay out of the water or away from it because of the massive waves. today, the bay's ian cull went to santa cruz and tells us what happens next. it's awesome. awesome. right in front of the boardwalk, all eyes were on the bathrooms that used to be at the end of the wharf that are now beach front property. you know, it's the new house in santa cruz for 1.2 mil. you know, it'll go pretty quick. hundreds of people came to east cliff drive to see the damage from above, before police advised them the area was closed. you have to take your last look and then head out. there's always something going on. it's pretty eventful when we get these big swells. new video shows the moment the wharf collapsed at 1244 on monday afternoon. the area has actually been closed for the past year because it was damaged in a prior storm and was being rebuilt. now it's back to square
5:08 am
one. it's an unfortunate event, but it does not speak to the overall integrity or structural capacity of the wharf itself. it's a very strong, very resilient structure. even with that, city leaders say they'll have to do their due diligence, meaning inspections and damage assessments. bottom line the wharf will remain closed until further notice. they're consulting with engineering firms and say there will be multiple inspections before the restaurants and shops on the wharf can reopen. we're also assessing what that means from a public safety and ability to reopen the wharf with those informed decisions. those times and dates will be set once we have much more data and much more understanding of the current situation. well, that's extremely sad actually, because, you know, they're going to have the wharf closed now for probably a long time, and that's going to be a lot of people's jobs. and you know, it's christmas time. and so that makes it even harder. main beach and cowles beach are also closed because there's so much debris still in the ocean. the city is
5:09 am
telling people to stay out of the water. some of the pilings from the wharf were found four miles south in capitola. luckily, the capitola village was spared from other damage. shop owners say they were evacuated due to the high surf and had to close for the rest of the day during a busy time of year. but the village is back open. we're back. we're open for business, back to normal. it's come watch the waves. we have a really cool view to the storm. watch and we're not worried. as for the part of the santa cruz wharf that collapsed, the city says it's too early to say if it will be rebuilt again. ian cull today in the bay. wow. all right. meteorologist kari hall, of course. joining us now. a lot of people out there off today could be heading to check out the waves. maybe. yeah, but you want to be very careful there and stay away from the big waves that you see coming in. the waves have calmed down enough for them to drop the high surf warning, but we are still going to see the waves building up
5:10 am
today with the next storm system in this atmospheric river that will be approaching the bay area going into tomorrow. so right now we're still seeing 10 to 15 foot waves. so that's very dangerous. and there is the risk of some of those sneaker waves. those are the waves that just come up along the coast. it looks like a normal wave, but it comes up a lot higher than some of the previous waves. and it can really be dangerous as it draws a lot out into the ocean. but for the mariners out there, there is a gale warning that will be in effect. and all of this starts up again tomorrow. so this is when we see the brunt of the next storm arriving in the bay area. it will bring in some widespread rain as well as sierra snow, and we are in a very active storm pattern, which is making things once again along the coastline very turbulent and dangerous. so we will be tracking one storm after the next going into the weekend. but early next week it looks like things quiet down just enough for us to welcome in 2025 with some sunshine. and we will
5:11 am
be talking more about that and what we're expecting this weekend. coming up in just a few minutes. marcus and kira. thanks, kari motivated to make a difference in her community. up next, one woman took matters into her own hands, you c say, and starts sharing hope ahead of the holiday season. the way she's doing it will make you bay area proud. plus, christmas day would not be complete without tamales. yeah, we're going to break down the annual tradition that had south bay residents lined up for hours and santa getting some backup from oakland police. see the early christmas surprise for some kids in
5:12 am
5:13 am
5:14 am
christmas to you and happy hanukkah. we are starting out right now at 513 with a live look outside in san francisco. this is beautiful. you can see the tree and all of the bright lights there in the city as we go throughout the day. it's going to be chilly, but all clear as we get a few clouds in the mix. but overall our temperatures will go from mid 40s to mid 50s for later today. and a look at the traffic map. there's basically nothing going on. nothing in the chp report. so we'll be watching to see if any incidents occur. hopefully everyone stays safe and has a nice happy holiday. we'll get a look at what to expect with our next storm coming in in just a few minutes, or during the
5:15 am
holiday season. there are many charitable organizations that ramp up to help those in need, but a few have ramped up as quickly as one east bay group from idea to execution in fewer than 60 days. today in the bay's garvin thomas has their brief but compassionate history in this morning's bay area. proud. it goes le older kids. over the years, maya and mr. smith has spent a lot of time doing charitable work and then coats men's clothes, but never, maya says. has she done so much work in such a short amount of time with such meaningful results? this is the best thing i've ever done. this store is the best thing we've ever done. after my marriage and my children, this has been the most meaningful experience of my life. hello! the store is the lamorinda care collective. it's a pop up boutique in lafayette where everything is free, donated to help those in need. this holiday season. it has all been put together in less than two months
5:16 am
because, well, that's when maya first had the idea. november 6th to be exact. i woke up at like 4 a.m. the morning after the election and i was like, i have an idea, right? and i needed to be, like, spurred into action, into hopeful action. in years past, maya had hosted something called the do gooders garage in her home, where she handed out donations. but this time she felt the need, as well as the desire to help, could support something bigger. with little time to waste, maya got diamond builders to donate a vacant storefront. thanks for putting them on hangers. she solicited donations on facebook, got a network of friends to volunteer, and asked local service organizations to let their clients know all about it. it all went a bit too well when not long after they opened, their stock ran low and maya wasn't sure they'd have anything to give those who came. the next day, she posted her fears online making a video. so i remember this moment forever and woke up to a flood of help. thank you
5:17 am
all so much for your generosity. and i just sort of sat here and looked at the mountain of donations, sat on that chair, cried. it is a hastily arranged charitable operation that doesn't look hasty or feel like charity for that matter. it's simply a place where needs are met on both sides of the counter. what's incredible about this is it's not unique to lafayette, right? every single person who watches this can do this exact thing. there's nothing special about me. there's nothing special about this idea. it exists in many different places. yeah, okay. and it should exist everywhere. i'm sure she would be happy. wow. that is very humble of her to say thanks, garvin, for another great story. well, it's christmas day, and for many hispanic families, that means it is time for the annual tradition of tamales. this was the line yesterday morning in east san jose outside the tamale factory. it sold 10,000 yesterday alone. pork, beef, chicken, cheese, sweet, you name it. tamales
5:18 am
actually date back to pre-columbian times. families would make them and pack them for their aztec warriors so they could eat on the way to war. i love that place every year. i've never stood in line there, but the 10,000 people did incredible. all right. some oakland families received some holiday cheer from santa and police this holiday season. opd officers spent christmas eve delivering food and gifts to select families in need. police union paid for hundreds of gifts and christmas dinners for 70 families. those families were selected with the help of oakland unified based on need. the families say it was really nice having a moment to highlight the work the police do. in addition to crime fighting means that our community cares about us and the looking at it as a positive thing. i know opd gets a lot of bad press, but i mean stuff like this that, you know, makes you think, you know, we're all human
5:19 am
beings, right? so we're all trying to do the right thing and help each other love it. this marks the 10th year of police union's christmas basket program. i know a lot of those kids are like, yes, beautiful. yeah, that is the best and good weather tay. to test out those toys. santa. that's always a treat, right? when they get their toys and they can go outside and just test them out, play and have a good time. you will need a coat today. it is very chilly. let's get a look at what's happening out around the bay area. this is a look at christmas in the park. also another great tradition and it is all lit up. if you're going to go out there, we are going to see some cool temperatures even starting out this morning with some 30s on the map here we're down to 38 degrees in napa, santa rosa, calistoga, about the same temperature, but it's also 38 in livermore, much colr than it was yesterday. at this time, as we were seeing that rain coming through, and then the cold front blasted through
5:20 am
the bay area. so now we're left with some much lower temperatures for the afternoon. today, we'll only make it up to 55 in napa, 57 in oakland, san francisco, palo alto 57, and also upper 50s for the south county, while the tri-valley stays in the mid 50s. and then looking at tomorrow, it's a touch warmer. but we will also see that rain coming back and some milder temperatures coming along with some rain on friday. looking across the region, if you will still have to travel today, we are going to see some drier and better traveling weather today compared to yesterday, and also compared to tomorrow because we'll see that rain coming back. this is our small little window of a break before we get some widespread rain. by tomorrow evening between 6 and 10, we are seeing that rain coming down and it just continues into at least friday morning, but then tapering off friday afternoon. so the additional rainfall that we are going to see for the north bay will be much higher
5:21 am
than what we see for some of the other areas, but we'll continue to see that rain into the weekend. and in total, between the storm that moves in tomorrow through sunday, we could see another 1 to 2in of rainfall, and we know the ground is already pretty saturated. so looking at our 7-day forecast off and on, showers, most of the rain that we see tomorrow comes in later in the evening, tapers off early on friday. and then on saturday we are going to see a mostly cloudy day with another storm system arriving on sunday, and then it will be clearing out early next week. but looking at our forecast, we will need after today, those umbrellas as well as some heavy coats. let's get you out there on the roads this morning. i haven't seen any incidents popping up on chp, but as we take a look around some of our cameras, the bridges, the approach to the bridges and the toll plazas, most likely they're not going to turn on the metering lights today. the traffic flow is fairly light, so maybe you can hang out with us a
5:22 am
little bit longer. enjoy that coffee. if you are heading off to work this morning we are looking at green sensors, which means that everyone is traveling at speed all around the bay area, so i'll keep an eye on it. i'll let you know if anything pops up, but hopefully you get to work safely and enjoy this holiday. back to you, kara. marcus kari, thanks so much. well, it's 521 for you on this christmas day. coming up next here on today in the bay, a beloved south bay restaurant closing its doors. everybody uses the word bittersweet because it's come to an end, but you know it. and it's been a great run. coming up, we're going to take you to the final christmas party before saying
5:23 am
5:24 am
5:25 am
so a south bay restaurant closing its doors after nearly half a century, had their last christmas eve party yet. but as today in the bay scott budman shows us, it was a celebration full of memories and great food. yeah, i can't, i can't. one more toast and one more meal to celebrate. steamers. a los gatos institution for 45 years. serving dinner one last time this christmas eve. i started working for steamers in 1981. longtime employees and longtime diners. i have been here every friday for a ladies lunch for as long as i can remember. really? for as much as i can remember. sharing memories now that
5:26 am
steamers family owned since it opened in 1979, gets ready to shut its doors for the last time you walk in. what are you thinking? i'm thinking it's sad. it's time. they deserve a break. the three siblings who started it say the lease is running out, and it's gotten too pricey to keep up. everybody uses the word bittersweet because it's come to an end, but you know it. and it's been a great run. a great run for a family run, family oriented restaurant and all the families that, you know, the kids i grew up in here, i've been coming here since i was two, you know, and so we get a lot of that. as for what's next, the owner tells us there are no concrete plans. he says they expect to keep the bar open here at steamers until december 29th. in case you want to come in for a final drink. and shortly after that, they expect someone else to move in. in los gatos, scott
5:27 am
budman, nbc, bay area news. a lot of folks are coming in to check it out. yeah, we have four more days. let's get there. 26 past the hour. up next, top stories we're following today include a scary drive up to tahoe. the conditions many drivers had to face ahead of this christmas holiday. plus, we're tracking just how much snow will fall this week. plus, we're in the carving room at glide memorial church. we'll show you what they're cutting up for this christmas meal. coming up in a
5:28 am
5:29 am
5:30 am
those in need. we are moving the bay area forward with preparations underway right now to get thousands of christmas meals ready for crowds today and striking hotel workers in san francisco are ready to get back to work just in time for one of the busiest times of the year. the impact this will have on incoming mayor. plus, we are waking up to a chilly christmas morning, but no rain in sight for now. the next round of rain when it will take aim at the bay area. this is today in the bay. good thursday morning. merry christmas. i'm kira klapper in for laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. we all want to wish you a happy merry christmas and happy hanukkah, which starts later tonight. correct? yes,
5:31 am
exactly. at sundown. all right, well, we want to talk about that weather. what you're going to experience as you're celebrating throughout the day. meteorologist kari hall, of course. been checking that out. i think we've got a nice present weather wise today. yes, we do, and it's nice to have a break from all of the rain. and we are going to have some cozy weather for staying inside. that means cool temperatures. here's a look at what to expect. it will be a sunny and cool day, but we're still watching those dangerous waves along the coastline that will really start to get even worse for tomorrow. the rain returns also tomorrow. so with that storm coming in, it's going to build up those big waves. we can see that right now as we take a look at the radar and satellite. and the current readings show that we're at about 10 to 15ft, with some of those breakers possibly building to 20 to 30ft for tomorrow through sunday. as we get a series of storms returning to the bay area, creating the conditions that could be a sneaker waves as well as rip currents. now, looking at the rainorecast once again, we are dry today, but we start to see those showers coming in early
5:32 am
tomorrow, with more widespread rain late tomorrow night. and then we will have a very soggy start to our friday, so i'll be trackingng that. also watching e roads for you this morning, where we are seeing a very light flow of traffic all around the bay area. that was oakland and the berkeley curve where we are yesterday, had a big problem with that overturned semi truck today. that's not an issue obviously, as we are seeing the flow of traffic look pretty good. hopefully it stays this way because we are seeing green sensors all around, with the exception of one hazard that we are seeing in oakland traveling on 580, it looks like that's not causing any slowdowns because of the flow of traffic is so light. so i'll continue to monitor that and see what's going on. but we are going to hopefully have a nice, quiet holiday and i'll be tracking everything you need to know with another update coming up again in a few minutes. kira love that. kari thanks so much! well, it is a six decade long holiday tradition at san
5:33 am
francisco's iconic glide memorial church, feeding thousands of people proper holiday meals. today in the bay's thom jensen is live at glide in the tenderloin right now, where they are getting ready for about 4000 guests. i'm gobsmacked. i thought it was like 2000, which already is astounding enough, but 4000 meals? yeah, and you think about that. good morning and merry christmas carol. you think about that on top of what they're already doing in the community with serving meals. they got breakfast starting at seven. but this is the holiday meal they're preparing here. and we're in the carving room right now. you know they fed 4000 yesterday or more for that prime rib dinner from house of prime. and now they're doing turkey and ham all the trimmings. they've got 80 of these hams, 130 turkeys that they're carving up here in the carving room. just a huge, huge undertaking here that takes a lot of volunteers, a lot of
5:34 am
planning, a lot of patience and a lot of time. and we're here with danielle, max, maxwell and max. you've been doing this for 20 years, helping out overseeing the carving here. but what's it like turning around meals like thi you know, one after another? it's a pleasure. it's a pleasure working with the volunteers, helping them get the stuff carved up and ready to go, and knowing that what we're doing here is coming to fruition someplace else.e. a lot of peopl are having a good day, thanks to the volunteer work here at glide, and they serve, you know, you guys served up that big prime rib dinner yesterday doing this one today where you've got 130 turkeys, 80 hams, 30 gallons of gravy. you know, the shrimp. how many pounds of cranberry, i don't know, 250 pounds of mashed potatoes, veggies, stuffing, dinner rolls, pumpkin pies for everybody. i mean, this really does brings hope to folks, doesn't it? to be able to get these holiday meals and feel like the people care about them?
5:35 am
yes it does, i mean, i am, i've come and served on occasion and you see the people come in and they have that plate of food. they were very happy to receive it. and you see the volunteers here carving these up. volunteers are so important to glide, aren't they? can you talk about just how essential it is to have good volunteers like this for meals, and a service like this that provides to the needy? volunteers are the lifeblood. without volunteers, you don't function, you don't operate, people don't eat. so i'm always surprised at how many volunteers come down to work with us. we're starting early today, so we only have a few, but shortly we'll have a lot more coming in and doing doing it. and they come year after year. in my 20 years, i've seen kids grow up who come with their parents. i've seen people age like myself over the years, but it's really nice because people do come back because they know they're providing a service. i'm
5:36 am
right there with you. i'm the same age as the 61 year old service that you've been doing here at glide. and as far as the meals and everything go, it just seems like this has been an effort that that glide has been committed to for so long. why has that commitment been so persistent and how has it grown? because we understand the need has grown a lot over the past couple of years. oh yeah, definitely. the need has grown tremendously. you know, if you're a person with a good heart and you see something that needs to be addressed, you address it. cecil did that 60 plus years ago. he brought love to this community. and basically from there he just started running. and as he was running, people started running with him. and this is the end, the result, not the end result, but the result is these kind of services and this kind of dedication to the community to help out. well, it's beautiful and thanks to people like you and the other
5:37 am
volunteers here at max, i really appreciate it. merry christmas to you. and again, the doors will open here for the holiday festivities at 10:00. they are serving breakfast starting at seven, and then the holiday meal will be served at 11:00. merry christmas to all of you. back to you in the studio. merry christmas tom, and please extend our deep admiration to max for us for his 20 years of service. wouldn't be possible without wonderful people like max. well, at 36 past the hour, we want to remind you that we are in the final push to help nourish our neighbors. you can still donate to our food drive today at your neighborhood safeway or andronico's. just let your checker know that you'd like to donate that $10. that money will provide 20 meals to families in need. well, san francisco's month long hotel worker strike officially over. hilton hotel employees ratified a new four year deal yesterday afternoon. now, the end of that strike is a victory for the incoming mayor, who had a hand in getting the workers and hotel owners to the
5:38 am
bargaining table. and today in the bay, sergio quintana tells us, it's also a relief for the people who live and work near the picket lines. it's a different story. the hilton hotel workers have voted and nearly unanimously agreed to a new contract 99.4%. yes, it's a relief for the workers who have spent 93 days on the picket lines. and it's also a relief for people who live or work next to what had been very noisy protests. all the click and clanging and stuff. it's just mad. it was obnoxious. but i do understand they needed their contracts and everything. but as far as our business, we're happy they're gone. dominique batten and mickey coleman operate a barber shop across the street from the san francisco hilton. this agreement from hilton employees effectively ends what had been a three month long strike that included up to 2500 employees from six different hotels across downtown san francisco. union leaders credited mayor elect daniel lurie for helping get the leaders of marriott hotels to come to an agreement with workers. agreements with hyatt
5:39 am
and hilton hotels came quickly after that. everybody gets to be home for christmas. our workers got a very good deal. the hotel owners know that they can go into 2025 fired up, ready for the j.p. morgan healthcare conference that starts in second week of january. this is an early political victory for mayor elect lurie, who doesn't get sworn into office until january 8th. hotel union leaders say they're happy with the deal. workers have now ratified because it preserves health benefits, protects workers pensions and gives them a pay hike. but they say they're still working on getting deals w witha few other hotel groups in the city. sergio quintana today in the bay. great christmas morning for all. 539 right now. cleanup will soon be underway after parts of the santa cruz wharf collapsed into the ocean on monday, and the wharf is now closed until further notice. the bathrooms that used to be at the end of the wharf are now washed up onto shore. you can see there
5:40 am
that part of the wharf actually was closed already for the past year because it was damaged in a prior storm and was being rebuilt. main beach and cowell's beach are also closed, and because there's so much debris still in the ocean, the city is telling people to stay out of the water. santa cruz city leaders say there needs to be several inspections and damage assessments done before restaurants and shops on the wharf can even think about reopening. let's take a live look over at the sierra this morning, where chains are now required for i-80. this is after a fresh round of snow. now those wintry conditions causing slick roads in the sierra. and this is what it looked like yesterday over at kingvale. chp temporarily closing traffic because of spinouts there. some of those drivers headed to the sierra say that they were prepared for the snow ride and slow. the chp was back there asking everyone to put chain, so definitely need to have the chain, you know, and be because the snow is just coming down. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those conditions for us over there in
5:41 am
