plus, a clear morning across the bay area. but will it change later this week? meteorologist kari hall is tracking when the rain will return. oh that's beautiful. what a great way to start christmas morning. clear skies. and you know what, i like it. yeah. santa said i need a clear path to get to where i'm going. right? and we were just tracking him, and he's officially done. yes. so now going on vacation? yes. 8 billion gifts delivered. so. all right. and the next 364 days off. right. that's nice. all right. so we're starting out this morning for the people who are up early with us and also heading off to work. we are starting out very chilly. it's in the upper 30s in the north bay. and it's also 39 in livermore. 37 in danville. that's the coldest temperature on the map here. and it's 38 in napa, calistoga and santa rosa. elsewhere, we're starting out our christmas morning in the

40s. here's a live look at san rafael. nice that it's not foggy. we don't have to deal with any rain. and it will be sunny going throughout the day with a gradual warm up going from low 40s now to mid 50s in the early afternoon. you know, you will notice that it will be a cooler day, but we are going to see a lot of cloud cover increasing for the evening. getting ready for s some north y showers overnight and into tomorrow. but most of the bay area won't really see any rain until late tomorrow afternoon into the evening, and this could have an impact on your plans for after christmas shopping or going into the weekend, as well as heading back to work. let's get a look out there on the roads this morning. it has been a very light flow of traffic as we take a look at oakland, looking at 880. things are looking pretty well there. heading to the bay bridge toll plaza. they still haven't turned on the metering lights. i don't think they will because it's really not needed. there is one car traling toward the toll plaza right now and looking at san jose. we have three

room back into the kitchen where, you know, the volunteers not only came here this morning to prere that christmas meal, they prepare breakfast every day. and they're doing that again today. they're here preparing the christmas meal right now with the ham, turkey, all the trimmings, 500 pounds of cranberries, potatoes, stuffing, pumpkin pies for dessert. enough to feed about 4000 people. they've already fed 4000 people at that christmas eve prime rib dinner from house of prime. about 3,000 pounds of prime rib. yesterday they fed hundreds more to peoe in encampments across the city, and organizers say this is all part of the 61 year old tradition here at glide. giving hope all year and for the holidays. i think what's different this year is the joy and the passion of volunteers. have more people are coming out, more people are in our line. we know that hunger doesn't go away because it's a holiday. and so that's what today is all about.

volunteer, giving back and serving our community. this is one of the busiest times of the year for glide, but they are giving out those hot meals and hope back to the community year round, 364 days a year. and they're always looking for volunteers. anyone who's interested in helping out can go to glide.org/volunteer to help out and take part in not only helping out for holidays like this, but all year round, because glide does provide that hope year round. merry christmas everyone back to you. absolutely. it really does make a merry christmas indeed, when so many people pitch in to help out. yeah, it really does. thanks, tom, so much for taking us there, bringing us that heartwarming story. and we, by the way, are in the final push to help nourish our neighbors. you can still donate throughout the day today. if you're headed to safeway, all you have to do is let your checker know that you'd like to donate $10 to the food drive. they'll s scan the

police advised them the area was closed. you have to take your last look and then head out. there's always something going on. it's pretty eventful when we get these big swells. new video shows the moment the wharf collapsed at 1244 on monday afternoon. the area has actually been closed for the past year because it was damaged in a prior storm and was being rebuilt. now it's back to square one. it's an unfortunate event, but it does not speak to the overall integrity or structural capacity of the wharf itself. it's a very strong, very resilient structure. even with that, city leaders say they'll have to do their due diligence, meaning inspections and damage assessments. bottom line the wharf will remain closed until further notice. they're consulting with engineering firms and say there will be multiple inspections before the restaurants and shops on the wharf can reopen. we're also assessing what that means from a public safety and ability to reopen the wharf with those informed decisions. those times
6:09 am
and dates will be set once we have much more data and much more understanding of the current situation. well, that's extremely sad, actually, because, you know, they're going to have the wharf closed now for probably a long time, and that's going to be a lot of people's jobs. and you know, it's christmas time. and so that makes it even harder. main beach and kohler beach are also closed because there's so much debris still in the ocean. the city is telling people to stay out of the water. some of the pilings from the wharf were found four miles south in capitola. luckily, the capitola village was spared from other damage. shop owners say they were evacuated due to the high surf and had to close for the rest of the day during a busy time of year. but the village is back open. we're back. we're open for business, back to normal. it's come watch the waves. we have a really cool view to the storm watch and we're not worried. as for the part of the santa cruz wharf that collapsed, the city says it's too early to say if it will be rebuilt again. ian cull

today in the bay. all right. meteorologist kari hall joining us now. so it looks like what caused all of that has kind of gone down. yeah. for now. only today really, because the next storm system is on the way and it's going to cause some more big waves near the coast. and keep in mind that even though the waves are not as high, all of the big waves that we had the past couple of days may have brought up a lot of driftwood, and may make the beach a little bit more hazardous todayand never turn your back to the water. we're going to see more of the waves building going into the next couple of days. right now it's at about 11 to 14ft, which is pretty significant, but may come up to about 20 to 30ft from tomorrow through sunday. and the risk of more sneaker waves, those are the waves that come up a lot higher than the previous waves. they can be pretty random, and so you just want to make sure that you are paying very close attention. and then looking at our high temperatures today, really not the best beach weather. we're going to stay in the 50s today. it will be cold behind the cold

front that moved through yesterday afternoon, and our highs for today will only make it into the mid 50s for martinez, dublin and livermore and then for palo alto as well as san francisco. it will be in the upper 50s for today, a touch warmer tomorrow. but that's also when we will see that rain arriving and more widespread rain into tomorrow evening. so we'll talk more about that timeline and what's ahead coming up in just a few minutes. back to you. looking forward to it. kari motivated to make a difference in her community. up next, one woman took matters into her own hands and started sharing hope ahead of the holiday season. we'll tell you the way she's making the bay area proud next. plus, christmas day would not be complete without tamales. we'll be back after the break to tell you about this annual tradition that had the south bay all lined up ready for more. and santa getting some backup from oakland police. the early christmas surprise for some kids in the

14 after the hour right now. well, you know, during the holiday season, there are many charitable organizations that ramp up to help those in need. but few have ramped up as quickly as one east bay group. from an idea to execution. we're talking about less than 60 days today in the bay's garvin thomas has their brief but compassionate history in this morning's bay area. proud. it

goes like older kids. over the years, maya and mr. smith has spent a lot of time doing charitable work and then coats men's clothes, but never, maya says, has she done so much work in such a short amount of time with such meaningful results? this is the best thing i've ever done. this store is the best thing we've ever done. after my marriage and my children, this has been the most meaningful experience of my life. hello! the store is the lamorinda care collective. it's a pop up boutique in lafayette where everything is free, donated to help those in need. this holiday season. it has all been put together in less than two months because, well, that's when maya first had the idea. november 6th to be exact. i woke up at like 4 a.m. the morning after the election, and i was like, i have an idea, right? and i needed to be, like spurred into action, into hopeful action. in years past, maya had hosted something called the do gooders garage in
6:16 am
her home, where she handed out donations. but this time she felt the need, as well as the desire to help, could support something bigger. with little time to waste, maya got diamond builders to donate a vacant storefront. thanks for putting them on hangers. she solicited donations on facebook, got a network of friends to volunteer, and asked local service organizations to let their clients know all about it. it all went a bit too well when not long after they opened, their stock ran low and maya wasn't sure they'd have anything to give those who came. the next day, she posted her fears online making a video. so i remember this moment forever and woke up to a flood of help. thank you all so much for your generosity. and i just sort of sat here and looked at the mountain of donations, sat on that chair, cried. it is a hastily arranged charitable operation that doesn't look hasty or feel like charity for that matter. it's simply a place where needs are

met on both sides of the counter. what's incredible about this is it's not unique to lafayette, right? every single person who watches this can do this exact thing. there's nothing special about me. there's nothing special about this idea. it exists in many different places. yeah, okay. and it should exist everywhere. i'm sure she would be happy. oh, beautiful. thank you. garvin. well, it's christmas day, of course. and for many hispanic families, that means it's time for the annual tradition of tamales. this was the lin yesterday morning in east san jose outside the tamale factory. get this. they told us they sold 10,000 yesterday alone. pork, beef, chicken, cheese, sweet tamales actually date back all the way to pre-columbian times. families would make them and pack them for their aztec warriors so they could eat on the way to war. the more you know, the more you know. so cozy by this fire. oh, yeah, i like that. speaking of some oakland families, received some holiday cheer from santa and police opd

officers. they spent christmas eve delivering food and gifts to select families in need. police union paid for hundreds of these gifts and christmas dinners for 70 families. those families were selected with the help of oakland unified based in need. based on need, i should say so. those families say that it really was nice having a moment to highlight the work police do, as well as additions to their crime fighting means that our community cares about us and the looking at it as a positive thing. i know opd gets a lot of bad press, but i mean stuff like this that, you know, makes you think, you know, we're all human beings, right? so we're trying to do the right thing and help each other. i love seeing that. you know what? this marks the 10th year the police union's christmas basket program has been going on. so look at that spreading cheer. so beautiful. and now meteorologist kari hall is here talking about a nice christmas day. i mean, chilly, you said, but dry to get out and
6:19 am
test those new bikes. and when you compare our weather versus what we see elsewhere, we're pretty good. we're doing pretty good. it's going to at times be sunny, but cool. and as we take a look at what to expect, it's still going to be dangerous to be very close to the water today. and then rain returns tomorrowow and tha new storm system will be with us for tomorrow evening into friday as well. so we're enjoying a break. but also the temperatures have dropped behind that strong cold front that moved through yesterday in fairfield. now we're starting the morning at 39. it is 37 in danville, hayward now at 45 and 45, in los altos. san rafael starts out the morning at 44. cloudy today, but we're going to stop the timeline right here at 1:00 on thuday morning, with some spotty showers moving into the north bay. there will be the chance of rain overnight, but most of the day is dry until the evening commute at 6 to 7:00. we're seeing widespread light rain,
6:20 am
but it will pick up and continue into friday morning. i do think that before sunrise on friday, that's when we get the brunt of the storm and the heaviest rainfall, and then it tapers off to spotty activity into late friday. we have several more storm systems after that going into the weekend. saturday, we'll see some more rain coming in and it continues into sunday, as well as the snow levels dropping in the sierra. but then on monday it's clearing out and we'll welcome in the new y year with some dry weather conditions all across the area as the storm track lifts farther to the north so we could see some pretty high rainfall totals on this already saturated ground going into the weekend. in total, over the next few days, we could see about two inches of rainfall for the north bay. most of the south bay areas into the east bay we'll see around an inch of rainfall. so our 7-day forecast shows that we are taking a break, seeing some peeks of sunshine for today and
6:21 am
then up to 60 tomorrow. mostly cloudy with a chance of showers. the rain chances increase tomorrow night into early friday. saturday is looking dry for the most part, but then sunday we see that storm system arriving early in the morning. and then on monday and tuesday it's sunny and cool. a look at our san francisco forecast. about the same, with waves of rain coming in after today. back to you, kari. thanks. well, next here on today in the bay, a beloved south bay restaurant closing its doors. hey, everybody uses the word bittersweet because it's come to an end. but, you know, and it's been a great run. coming up the years of service. and we're going to take you to that final christmas party before saying goodbye.

gosh, she is so flawless. i'm just like, staring at the at the monitor. and you you knew a surprising amount about that. you said she's she's playing halftime at the texans game in her hometown of houston. and there was something else. but i already forgot because i was so mesmerized by cardi, which is in texas, cowboy carter in texas, and maybe a third. oh, maybe part three. we might be starting rumors. no. yeah, we are, but there's a lot. no one told us that. yeah. just hoping. yeah. all right. but look, the thing about it is on netflix, a lot of people will be watching there. and if you think delivering high quality streaming content is content is really easy, think again. yeah, i think we all witnessed it with that mike tyson paul fight a couple of weeks ago, and our scott mcgrew went behind the scenes to find out when it comes to these big ticket events, that millions of people will watch. it gets even trickier. good morning. on christmas day, netflix will stream not just a football game,
6:45 am
but football game with a big star at halftime. there are also games on nfl plus and paramount. streaming is fundamentally different than broadcast because with broadcast like you're watching now, it makes no difference if another person joins in to watch or a thousand people or a million people. it's all the same to tv stations. we just send out one signal. streaming is far different. it matters how many people watch, because the more that watch, the bigger the load on the servers. video from our peacock streaming service from our first try at a streaming a game last year, it went just fine. big christmas ahead. are all the computers ready? yes they are. well, you know, i tell you, it's the internet. that's the challenge. i think there's a lot of capacity that can be built on the back end of these systems that the, the peacock and now netflix use for their christmas games. but it's really the internet that becomes the issue. you you actually summarized it. great. every single view now is a single session back in the tv
6:46 am
days. you're right. it was one broadcast. everybody got the same thing. now everyone has an individual session through the internet. so the capacity on the back end systems is number one. but then also making sure the internet capacity, cdns and everyone's devices are performing correctly. it's a very massively complex project to pull off. so it's not it's not trivial, it's not easy. and we're proud to say we partnered with peacock last year and pulled it off very, very well. as a matter of fact, i thought it was one of the best live events we've ever done, and we've done super bowls, world cups for the last ten years. so we've done massive, large live events, and we're proud to say we were part of a very successful one with peacock. and w we'll see how netflix can. yeah, it's very alarming, by the way, to a tv guy for you to say back in the tv days. but streaming has really gone mainstream, right? i mean, you were talking about this, the idea of watching something on peacock, on netflix, on amazon. the tyson fight ran into a couple of problems, i remember, but given the size of it, it went well. well, you know, i tell you, i'll tell you the difference between peacock and maybe netflix is jake paul
6:47 am
event. was that the ability to have issues is going to happen. like it's just the way that it's set up. i think the peacock situation uses comviva for real time monitoring. so we were able to, with peacock, show exactly when something was starting to happen, and they were immediately able to fix it. the difference in the in the jake paul fight, those issues never went away. they seem to be, you know, all the way through the entire event, which tells me that they don't have the same real time connection to the consumer. they know that there's an issue and they start trying to find it. but the ability to understand what's happening, especially in a streaming event, the ability to see what's happening as it's happening and fix it, is the answer. there will be good. it's a good ceo answer. you know, the reason is because they didn't hire us. so let me ask you, and i hate to even bring this up. what is your biggest nightmare when it comes to any sort of streaming event? what's the thing that you check and double check and triple check before you go, okay, let's do it. yeah, you got to check every layer from your source all the way out to the devices. has enough capacity and enough enough bandwidth all the way through. so there's actually not
6:48 am
one single thing because of the fact that it's a complex system, which makes it even more important that you just have to have your dna. live events are very different than vod. totally different ball game, totally different. so i think the ability to understand live event distribution and streaming and making sure you check all those capacity boxes would be the one thing. but it's comprised of many things, which is why it's so hard to do. well, i appreciate you being with us, and i and i look forward to these football games. hey, have a great holiday and i wish you the best of luck. the ceo of comviva joining us this morning guys. back to you. all right. thanks, scott. well tonight will be the first night of hanukkah. and the bill graham menorah project is celebrating its 49th year with the annual lighting ceremony in union square. this is video from last year. the festivities and live music begin at 330 this afternoon. the menorah lighting is at 5 p.m. beautiful. in addition to christmas, a group of first

weather today. a lot of weather today, but a nice one for christmas, right? it's a good christmas gift, but we will start to go back to work with more traffic and more rain coming in tomorrow. take a look at where we are right now. the cold front that moved through yesterday has made it even colder. this morning we are really feeling it. we're in the upper 30s in the north bay, from napa to calistoga to santa rosa, and it's also in the 30s in spots in parts of the east bay. as we start out in danville at 37 degrees in los altos, it is 43 right now. a cold morning start. i wanted to show you a look at what we are seeing. some temperatures in the upper 30s in dublin, and as we go throughout the morning into the afternoon, mostly sunny and in the low 50s, if you're calling your family somewhere in another part of the country. i wanted to show you the forecast where they are. check out the region as we are seeing some scattered showers moving from chicago to saint louis down to fort worth and houston. they're seeing some thunderstorms there. all clear,
6:51 am
dry for the east coast and some chilly temperatures after a light snow yesterday. and then for the pacific northwest. seattle raining, of course, and in the upper 40s. and we're going to see this system that's moving into the pacific northwest eventually make it down to the bay area late tonight into tomorrow morning. it starts out at 2:00 in the morning for the north bay, where we see some scattered showers, and the whole day won't be wet, but we will see the rain ramping up and becoming more widespread late tomorrow night and continuing through early friday. i do think the heaviest rainfall will be before sunrise on friday morning, and then going throughout friday afternoon with a bit of a break before we see the next storm system coming in righ behind that from saturday night into sunday. so we're in a very active weather pattern, but things change next week. the storm track lifts to the north and we will catch a break and welcome in the new year with some sunshine and some clear conditions for the bay area. as far as rain going into the weekend and early next week, we
6:52 am
could rack up another inch to possibly two inches of rainfall and the ground is already wet. so whatever we see may start to cause some issues. but the good thing is that that stretched out over the course of a few days, so hopefully we don't see any issues coming up. we are going to see the rain into early friday morning. saturday is mainly dry and on sunday we'll see the next storm system coming in, but nice and s sunny forext week and we can expect about the same weather conditions in san francisco. and a look out there on the roads this morning. here is a look at oakland. definitely a better picture than yesterday when it was raining and we had the traffic building up as well and no need for metering lights at the bay bridge toll plaza. the traffic flow has been very light. the heads up. if you do plan to catch public transit, bart is running on a sunday service schedule and then no service for the golden gate transit, as well as smart trains. and for the ferry, we route suspended until after the

10:00 and those meals get served at 11. hilton and its union have finally come to an agreement. this is after a 93 day strike. many of the workers have been on strike for three months demanding better wages and benefits. but this week, the hotel and union announced that they had reached an agreement. yesterday, those union workers voted to ratify a new four year deal. the vote by hilton employees follows similar agreements reached between workers with the marriott and hyatt hotels over the past week. cleanup will soon be underway after parts of the santa cruz wharf collapsed into the ocean on monday. the wharf is now closed until further notice. the bathrooms that used to be at the end of the wharf are now washed up on shore. that part of the wharf was actually closed for the past year because it had been damaged in a prior storm and was being rebuilt. main beach and cowell's beach are also closed, and because there is so much debris still in the ocean, the city is urging people to just stay away from the water. city leaders say there

need to be several inspections, as well as damage assessments, before the restaurants and shops that are still on the wharf can reopen. hopefully, christmas day is a good reason to stay away, to be with family and loved ones. opening gifts or just maybe just spending time walking around the neighborhood? yeah, because the weather is going to be nice. a little cool though, but we won't have to worry about any rain and it will be in the upper 50s for many of our microclimates, including the inland areas tomorrow. mostly cloudy and we will see the rain returning late tomorrow evening into friday morning. saturday is also a break from a lot of the wet weather, but it will return late saturday into sunday and next week we are back to the sunshine with near normal temperatures. also looking at 50s in san francisco and out on the roads this morning. nothing going on, not a single incident. that's some great news. that means for all of us who are working on christmas, we're making it to work safely. yes. bless everyone who is headed out to work this morning. the today show is just ahead ande are
