5:00 am
a bomb went off and i was pretty freaked out right now at five. a violent explosion shakes a beachside neighborhood awake on christmas morning. the
5:01 am
investigation now into what caused this capital apartment building to go up in flames. plus, busy days ahead for bay area airports. now that christmas is over and hanukkah begins. we are live at sfo for an update on conditions as the rush for new year's eve is on. and it was a nice holiday, but the rain returns. we're seeing some scattered showers this morning. meteorologist kari hall has your timeline for when we could dry off. this is today in the bay. and good morning to you. on this thursday, i'm marcus washington, and i'm kira klapper still filling in for laura garcia. she's enjoying the week off, but meteorologist kari hall is still here. cinthia pimentel is here for mike today. you will get to that in just a moment. people are actually back on the roads. you did traffic yesterday because no one was on the roads. yeah, it was nice and quiet yesterday. i do expt there to be more people back to work today and dealing with rain. so we are seeing some
5:02 am
scattered showers coming in and that may make things a little bit more slippery. so if you're getting up and heading out, just a heads up that we have seen the return of showers and we've seen the first wave moving through and it is fairly light, exactly what we expted with a bit of a break going into the afternoon. just staying cloudy today. and then we start to see the rain picking back up for the north bay at about 5:00 this evening, and then seeing more of the heavy rain developing overnight and continuing through tomorrow morning. and then we will see another small window of some dry weather before the next storm system comes in. so we're going to still see a very active and very wet weekend ahead. we'll talk more about this and what's ahead coming up in a few minutes. but cynthia, you were saying that chp is urging caution for some spots this morning. yeah. right there. bay bridge. we see those slippery roadways and it could be gusty winds at times as people. yeah we see it here. maybe start to head back toork or start holiday travel early. so just be careful of this. and also the
5:03 am
rest of the bay area bridges. we see rain on the lens here through the richmond-san rafael bridge, but nobody on the roads there. this morning. those raindrops also continuing through parts of the north bay in san rafael. so we're just going to take it just a little bit slower this morning. as we do head out the door. look at those sensors looking good around the bay area. this caught eye near san jose. we'll see what it is and i'll get back to you in a few minutes. back to you. all right, cynthia, thanks so much. it is 502 right now in the east bay family is remembering one of their own as a hero. after a fire burned down their home. the family says the man who saved their lives lost his in the process. it was just after six yesterday morning, christmas morning, that oakland firefighters responded to a fire on oak knoll boulevard where they found a 37 year old man unresponsive inside the home. neighbors are identifying him as this man you see on your screen, steve weatherford, junior. his father, steve weatherford senior, told nbc bay area news off camera that he lived in the home for decades. he jumped from
5:04 am
his second floor bedroom window to escape the flames. a neighbor tells us that after steve junior helped his dad, brother and aunt get out safely, he went back into the burning home but didn't make it back out. he was going to propose on new years and had the ring, and apparently he went in. their family's safe to get the jewelry. it's incredible guy though. really loved his dad, loved his family, you know, dedicated son. his girlfriend says he was an amazing man with a beautiful soul, adding there are no words to describe how devastated they are right now. neighbors have launched this gofundme page for the family. the cause of the fire is being investigated. well, turning now to a terrifying christmas morning for people living in one santa cruz county neighborhood, an apparent explosion at a home caught on surveillance. look at this one man visiting family for the holidays is renting out a nearby airbnb. his family was
5:05 am
forced to quickly evacuate. we told m my daughter or you know,r told my daughter, you know, santa is being really loud. so we then just got all of our stuff together as quickly as we could. there was a lot of screaming. we could hear people on both sides, you know, a lot of commotion. we jumped in our car and, you know, we could see the flames really starting to kick up this, you know, bright orange. and we drove off to my cousin's house. now, friend says one person was living in the home but was thankfully out of town at the time. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. well, this morning many travelers are heading back home following the christmas celebrations. highways and airports are expected to be busy today. hanukkah is beginning and people are looking towards new year's eve. today in the bay's. thom jensen is live at sfo. hey, tom, good morning to you. hoping you had a merry christmas. this is the start of what people are calling a busy three days of return to travel.
5:06 am
that's right. good morning, happy hanukkah. happy kwanzaa to you as well. and i hope you had a merry christmas as well. yeah, a tsa is telling us today, friday and saturday. it's supposed to be three of the busiest travel days here at sfo and at airports across the nation. they're expecting here at sfo, travel to be up by 15% over the 2023 holiday season in total. triple a says nearly 120 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home over the holiday season, which is december 21st through january 1st. as far as they're concerned, they expect this year's travel numbers to top the record set before the pandemic hit in 2019 by about 64,000. so we're just narrowly surpassing the previous record. so we are projecting a new record overall, again, just barely beating 2019 travel record. but that's a lot of people. we always include two
5:07 am
weekends at the end of the year for our forecast, and that's because most people are going to be traveling the weekend before christmas and the weekend after christmas. 119 million traveling overall. nearly 90% of those travelers are driving to their destinations. so driving is by far the most popular mode of holiday travel. but travel is still up by air thanksgiving through new year's day, they're expecting 6.3 million travelers here at sfo again, a 15% increase over 2023. oakland is forecasting a total of 500,000 passengers for all of december, and sjc says it will get about 300,000 through the gates through the 5th of january this year. in fact, triple a says this will still likely be a record. air travel season. even though travel by by driving is by far the most that's used during the holiday season, they,
5:08 am
they say nationwide, more than 8 million people will fly this holiday season through all of the country's airports. that is again december 21st through january 1st. we're at sfo this morning, thom jensen today in the bay. wow, that is a lot of people. thanks, tom. well, today is the first day of kwanzaa. san francisco city hall will be lit up in red, green and black in recognition of the first night of kwanzaa at dusk. now, the first day of kwanzaa is called umoja, which stands for unity in swahili. tonight, the center of black candle is the first to be lit in the seven day celebration. and we're going to take a live look outside right now. on the first day of kwanzaa, we are looking at the marina outside dark. 508 as everyone is waking up after christmas day, dark and early. a lot of people headed back to work. a lot more people on the roads today compared to
5:09 am
yesterday. yeah, looking at the oakland camera here, it's such a sloppy start to our morning and we are going to see the waves of rain coming in right now. we're at 50 degrees. it's going to be a cool one. and still some lingering showers for the next couple of hours. and then just staying mostly cloudy as our temperatures only make it into the mid to upper 50s. here's the next storm system that's coming in. it's going to bring in some widespread rain, but we are expecting the activity to really ramp up later on this afternoon into the evening. and our high temperatures today. just a touch warmer than yesterday. up to 60 in oakland, 60 in martinez. and we'll be in the mid 60s for san jose. while some spots like fremont stays in the upper 50s and upper 50s for the north bay. we'll get a look at the timeline of the rain and thehe expecte impacts. right now, cynthia has been tracking where we can fill up for a little bit less. yeah, because people will be out and about with friends and family getting back to work. so let's gas up the car with the cheapest prices i could find this morning. thanks to you for
5:10 am
reporting them on gasbuddy.com. we'll start with 345 at costco on monument boulevard in concord. that will be busy for sure. next, we'll head down to the south bay with 361 at dimond gas on winchester, across the block from the winchester mystery house. if you find yourself in the area. and finally, maybe you're heading to the north bay into marin, where you'll find 369 at the arco in mill valley off of 101. let's go to the roadways now, and we'll see mostly green on the sensors. a couple minutes ago, we pointed out that spot down here in the south bay, and it is a solo car crash right there on 85 at the winchester boulevard off ramp, the number two lane and the center divide are being blocked off right now, just for the moment. but we see the sensors in the area looking good for now. we'll continue to follow those updates as the morning goes on. back to you. all right, cynthia and kari, thanks so much. it is 510 right now. if you're in the market for a car, it could soon be hard to get one at a decent price. next. the
5:11 am
reason affordable vehicles in the new year will be diffilt to find. plus christmas surprise. all thanks to one bay area animal shelter. we're going to show you the adorable moment. and if you're still looking for a late gift, we'll tell you about their incredible end of the arye
5:12 am
5:13 am
and happy kwanzaa. right now, at 513, we take a live look outside
5:14 am
at christmas in the park. if you're going out to enjoy that today, we are going to see a lot of clouds and at least a dry start. for the most part, we are going to see a cool and cloudy morning and then rain developing this afternoon. so we'll talk about the timeline and help you make some weekend plans coming up in a few minutes. and we do have rain right now on the lens of the golden gate bridge, so just drive carefully as you head back to work. or maybe going to pick some friends up at the airport. the plans right now are looking good. sensors are good. the log is also looking good, so we hope it stays that way. let's check out the world of business this morning with savannah. good morning. wall street is set to opopen lower as investors returd from the christmas holiday. now the market's closing higher in that shortened session on christmas eve with the dow, the nasdaq and the s&p 500 all rising about 1%. now. all three are positive for the week so far. the s&p just inching into positive territory for the month while the nasdaq is up more than
5:15 am
4%. the dow, however, is down more than 3% this month, on pace for its worst performance since april. finding an affordable car could be harder if president elect trump moves ahead with his threat to impose tariffs on imports from canada and mexico. the wall street journal says nearly a third of all vehicles priced below $30,000 are built in mexico, including the nissan sentra, the ford maverick and some other popular models. now, according to data from car shopping site edmunds.com, now that's up from 20% a decade ago. analysts and car dealers say any new tariff related costs are likely to be passed on to consumers and would hit affordable cars and suvs the hardest. and netflix's nfl debut kicks off without a glitch. nfl media says the christmas day broadcast was the second most popular live title on the streaming service to date. now, viewers in all 50 states tuned in within minutes of the pregame show going live, and people in nearly 200 countries watched the
5:16 am
first game between the chiefs and steelers. netflix signed a three year deal in may to broadcast nfl games on christmas. i'll send it back to you. well, you know what? we talked about netflix. you got to say beyonce. yeah, we got to say we got to shout out beyonce. of course. i know those games were hard for the true fans, but we were there for beyonce, who's performing before beyonce for the rest of us, for the rest of us. it was all about watching beyonce. yeah, exactly. once the niners were out, i couldn't care less about the other teams. but that queen man, she is back. she's the queen for a reason. i guess she never went anywhere. all right. savannah. exactly. that's true. that's. right. sorry to cut her off there. 16 past the hour. right now, for some bay area families, the best present they received on christmas morning was not left under the tree by santa, but a special delivery at their front door. we have a special delivery for you. what is it? oh my god! a dog! oh! oh my gosh! look at
5:17 am
that face. two families received a puppy. each delivered by the humane society of silicon valley. parents and kids alike were excited. hopefully, the parents knew. deliveries like these aren't the usual for humane society workers. the facility actually caught on fire just a few days ago and destroyed half the buildining. o humans nor animals were hurt, but the humane society says the setback is bringing out the best in people this holiday season. have some amazing donors who stepped up and have donated all of the adoption fees until our shelter is clear. the humane society is desperately searching for homes for more than two dozen dogs. starting today, new pet owners can adopt dogs at zero cost, which is like a significant discount because usually you have to pay for all sorts of things the shots and the spaying neutering. and i'm not sure about all breeds, but i think that was a boxer, which is
5:18 am
one of my favorites. it looked like one. yeah. so cute. it's going to be huge. yes. it's going to love all the kids. they're going to have a lot of three kids and their younger kids. perfect. perfect dog. yes. and good time to be at home with one right now during the holiday season, because you can get the puppy training going on and starting to get into a rhythm. you know about that too. how exciting to them. so sweet. and it was a good day yesterday to get out with the new dogs. get the energy out. like going walking, you know, riding the new bikes and, you know, testing out those remote control cars. yeah, it was great. and the weather is kind of taking a turn today. take a look at this live view of the bay bridge. we have so many more people driving across compared to yesterday at this time. and we are also dealing with the rain. so it's going to kind of be off and on. we're not going to see this lasting throughout the day. it's going to be mostly cloudy. as we take a look at the day planner for san francisco, temperatures
5:19 am
in the mid to upper 50s. and we're also going to see this going back into effect, the high surf advisory. and as of right now, we're seeing waves along the coast at about 9 to 16ft. but we are expecting some of those breakers to build throughout the day in the next several days, possibly up to 30ft. so it's still going to be very dangerous near the coastline. and we're seeing this system initially pushing through with some very light and weak showers and some of the heavier rain still well to the north of us and off the shore. as we go into later this evening, we start to see the rain picking up again in the north bay. it's about 5 to 6:00, but the heaviest rain will be overnight, first starting up around northern sonoma county at about 10 p.m. and then picking up as it moves through the rest of the bay area before sunrise tomorrow, and then going throughout the day with just some lingering showers. and then it eventually will dry up for a little while, but still a chance of rain in the forecast through saturday and then into sunday. we'll see another storm system
5:20 am
coming in, so it's been pretty busy here. one storm after the next, and this one's going to be a very quick mover. but then by monday it is already clearing out and it looks like the storm track changes for us. we will have a few days of some dry conditions all the way up until next weekend. so we're looking at some pretty high rainfall totals for parts of the bay area. we could see anywhere from about an inch in fremont to possibly an inch and a half, or even closer to two inches of rain farther north. so that's where we will see those higher rainfall totals. and for the sierra, a decent amount of snow before the new year, about 9 to 22in of snow on the way. so here's a look at our 7-day forecast. we are going to see some off and on showers and some mild temperatures next week. as we welcome in the new year, we'll have a chance to dry out and enjoy some sunshine near normal temperatures, with upper 50s and lows in the upper 30s and off and on showers from
5:21 am
today through sunday, but after that it is looking pretty nice. now, cynthia, you were getting word about a crash in the south bay. yeah, we go back to highway 85 here. as you make that connection with highway 17. there was only one car involved in this, but there is some road work now that needs to be done as that center divide. and the number two lane are looking at some damage, but otherwise it looks like the area is staying pretty smooth this morning. any way that you are traveling through the south bay? all the sensors look green here. about an 18 minute drive as you head northbound from san jose into mountain view. those connections look good and we take one more look at the tri-valley. maybe people are getting out the road out the door this morning on the road also looks good. if you're taking 580 to 680, any direction that you're heading in the east bay, the tri-valley this morning looks good. we'll take a look at the rest of the logs, see what's going on this morning. back to you. all right. thanks, cynthia. 521 for you this morning. next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. you've done the
5:22 am
unwrapping. it's my turn to do the unboxing to help you figure out what you can and can't recycle. i'm consur inmeve
5:23 am
5:24 am
about our holiday leftovers. not talking about food here? no. what do you do with all those piles of cards? ribbon? wrapping paper. there's a lot. we asked consumer investigator chris chmura how to deal with all that
5:25 am
holiday waste. to figure out what to do with all the boxes, bows, gift bags and ribbon, we're going to use guidance from the city of san jose. let's start with bows and ribbons. san jose says all bows and ribbons cannot be recycled. they can be thrown in the trash, or you can save them and reuse them next year. wrapping paper is easy to reuse, too, provided recipients are unwrapping carefully. ooh, butf it's ripped up beyond reuse, san jose says you can recycle most wrapping paper. don't worry about the tape. san jose says it's fine in the recycle bin. here's the one caveat wrapping paper that is shiny or contains foil and metallic pieces cannot be recycled. instead, try to reuse or just trash that stuff. same goes for tissue paper. the city of san jose says tissue paper contains the wrong fibers for recycling. they're too short to recycle. you have three choices reuse it, trash it, or compost it. as for cardboard boxes,
5:26 am
they're generally recyclable, but gift bags are a mixed bag. most of them are recyclable, but san jose, it's the shiny ones are part plastic, so you can't recycle them. finally, what do you do with greeting cards? san jose says they're okay in the recycle bin, but first, remove parts that have glitter, foil, metal charms, felt cutouts, and ribbons because all these items will contaminate paper recycling. here's a crafty alternative grab your scissors and use part of those greeting cards as gift tags. next year, you might tickle your friends if you use part of this year's greeting card on next year's gift. that's a really good idea. you can also use pictures too, that you can put as part of the wrapping. oh, that's a cute idea. wow, i can't wait to get a gift from you with my face on it. just kidding. i don't want that. 526 right now. up next, top stories we're following today, including. oh, gosh. an oakland man tried to save his
5:27 am
family in a house fire. he was killed on christmas day. the way his neighborhood is remembering him. plus, returning home airports nationwide have some busy days ahead before the new year. we're tracking the conditions right here in the bay area. and it was a big year for outer space. we take a look back at the significant developments made in the great beyond. wlle'

5:30 am
really loved his dad, loved his family, you know, dedicated son. right now, at 530 in oakland, man dies a hero after rescuing his family from a house fire on christmas morning. we'll hear from his neighbors who are paying tribute to him today. and the bay area celebrates the start of kwanzaa, kwanzaa, as well as hanukkah. we're going to show you the events lighting up san francisco as people from around the world visit the city by the bay. and yesterday was nice and dry. we are seeing scattered rain in parts of the bay area today. meteorologist kari hall is tracking when we could see some dry weather. this is today in the bay. i feel like we're ways talking about what we don't have. we have the rain. today we'll bring you the dry weather. we have the dry weather yesterday. we're bringing you the rain tomorrow. good morning. i'm kira klapper in for laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. look, let's talk about the weather now. meteorologist kari hall, of course. she's been putting all
5:31 am
the work in to keep us updated on what's happening in. the rain is returning. the rain is back, and i'm like, i just gave you all some. exactly. we had that yesterday. we also need the rain every now and then. and the good thing about wt we're seeing right now is it's light. and that's what we like. just enough to soak the ground and not cause any major issues. as we take a look at the wider view of the satellite radar. there is a lot more rain just to our north that will be heading into the bay area today ahead of this atmospheric river. it will be a fairly quick moving and a weak system, but we are starting out with fog and san francisco, some light rain and drizzle, and it stays mostly cloudy throughout the morning. we're only looking at some peeks of sunshine today and rain chances increasing later this evening. first starting in the north bay and spreading across the rest of the bay area overnight and continuing into early friday. so we'll talk more about what to expect as this next storm system arrives. and cynthia, you're seeing the commute picking up this morning. on a typical day, this would be packed. but now that we're heading, you know,
5:32 am
post-christmas, there are a few more cars on the road compared to what you were looking at yesterday when there was nobody on there. so we see that right now through the berkeley curve and the rain on the lenses and the wet roadways. so just be careful of that. we're doing a tour around the bay area. we come down here to the south bay seeing some rain now picking up light through san jose, parts of 101. also people heading out the road on the road this morning so the sensors look good. i hope it stays that way, but if anything pops up, i'll be here to let you know. back to you. all right, cynthia. thank you. well, the holiday ended in tragedy for an oakland family who lost their home and the man who likely saved their lives today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us from the newsroom. with that life cut far too short. good morning to you, chris. well, good morning to you, kyra and marcus. so there are so many layers to this tragedy. there's the fire that forced a family from their home and the hero who did not survive it. the oakland fire department started that call before 615
5:33 am
christmas morning on oak knoll boulevard. but even before firefighters arrived, there were rescues underway. neighbors tell us that steve weatherford, junior, this man here jumped from a second floor window to escape the flames, but then went back into the burning house to help his father, his brother and his aunt get out safely. then the 37 year old weatherford went back into the burning house one last time, and a neighbor told us he was likely thinking about his future. he was going to propose on new years and had the ring, and apparently he went in to their family safe to get the jewelry. his girlfriend described weatherford to us as an amazing man with a beautiful soul, and she told us there are no words to describe the family's devastation or how they will ever recover from this tragedy. at this point, the cause of the fire is under investigation. but weatherford's father fears it could have been the family christmas tree. neighbors launched a gofundme page for the family to help put
5:34 am
weatherford to rest. kira gosh, it's just awful. chris, thanks so much. we're good to get that word out about the gofundme. 33 past the hour now, many celebrated the beginning of hanukkah last night and christmas on the same day across the bay area. the last time the two holidays lined up together was nearly two decades ago, in 2005. today, in the bay's emma gaugh shows us how people in san francisco celebrated the festival of lights. it was a happy first night of hanukkah in union square, where several hundred people sang the hanukkah blessings and watched as the first candle on the 22 foot tall bill graham menorah was lit with help from senator scott wiener and omer fine of the foreign trade administration. father and son rabbis yosef and moshe langer of the san francisco chabad led the festivities, keeping up a 49 year san francisco tradition. being here with so many other people, all happy, all c celebrati, i think
5:35 am
it's just a good feeling. lee's lifelong friends came to the menorah lighting together. it's my first time i've been here before and enjoyed sufganiyot jelly donuts, a favorite hanukkah treat. like a bite. just steps away. families snapped photos under the union square christmas tree. it's really nice to have both holidays, like there's some community and connection about that. that seems very appropriate for the time of year that we're in. nearby san francisco's city hall lit up blue and white in honor of hanukkah. in cole valley, volunteers wrote hanukkah cards and packed more than 100 gift bags meant for jewish seniors living in retirement homes and nursing facilities around san francisco. and in the back, there's a menorah. there's candles that they can have on their shelf, and then a dreidel and a cookie and just a beautiful handwritten hanukkah card. chabad rabbi nosson potash, the director of community for jewish seniors, will make the deliveries. these
5:36 am
volunteers here are bringing light and joy to so many seniors throughout san francisco. emma goss for today in the bay. that was emma goss reporting, as she said, chabad rabbi nathan potash, the director of community for jewish seniors, says he will make the deliveries later. well, turning now to a live look at sfo for you this morning. airports are expected to get busy again today as christmas wraps up. tsa expecting the busiest days of travel today, friday and saturday as far as this season. sfo says they have 15% more passengers this year compared to last season. oakland airport says it's expected to see over 500,000 people through december, and sjc says it will get about 300,000 passengers through january 5th. today in the bay's thom jensen is at sfo this morning. he's tracking the travel rush. he will have a live report for us coming up in our next half hour. and if you're trying to catch a flight, no doubt you will want to know
5:37 am
about any potential delays. meteorologist kari hall of course, tracking those weather conditions because that certainly does impact travel. a lot of time, yes. so we're taking a look at the national map here, showing where we are seeing some more storms developing. and it's now happening around the dallas are, as well as in parts of the midwest where we're seeing some of the showers moving through and a new storm system approaching the west coast that will also bring in some snow to the rockies. so as we take a look at what we're seeing as of now for the delays and the major airports, everything is on time to start out this morning and hopefully it stays that way. despite that, we are seeing some of the more active weather starting to develop across the country and even out west. we are all on time. early this morning, let's get a look at some of the local destinations where you may be headed. enjoying some time in napa? it will be mostly cloudy tomorrow after some early morning showers and then rain. chances increase again late on saturday into sunday with temperatures in the upper 50s. if your weekend plans
5:38 am
take you to tahoe today, there will be a mix of some rain and snow and the upper elevations will have some snow and some very slick conditions. so we are going to see the changing weather there as well. it tapers off tomorrow as temperatures warm up and as of now saturday is looking dry, but it will be in the low 50s. some really warm weather there melting some of the snow that we've gotten over the past few days. so we'll be tracking those changes, helping you make some more weekend plans coming up in just a few minutes. and cynthia, you were looking at holiday weekend traffic. yeah, it's going to be busy through san francisco union square, that hanukkah festival continuing through january 1st. of course, we have all of the activities going on in union square with the shopping, with the ice skating. so just be prepared to be in traffic for a little bit as you head into the city. public transportation always an option. we come down here to the south bay going to the sharks game tomorrow. expect just some traffic right there, moving through parts o the alameda and
5:39 am
getting off of the freeway there. that's tomorrow night at 730, but it shouldn't be too ba. as people head out in san jose, we go back into san francisco for saturday's game at chase center. warriors are playing there at 530, so that will add some more traffic as people come off to 8101. maybe not heading to chase center, maybe going to union square, but that will be busy as we go on into the city through the weekend. and finally, maybe your long weekend will carry you down here to the south bay once again for the niners game on monday. vta always a great option that will get you right there through the stadium doors, and we'll see some traffic picking up through parts of 237 and maybe people coming down 80 as well. back to you. all right cynthia, thanks. you know what? it was a big year. it sure was a big year for out of space. yeah. from americans stuck at the space station to competition from another country. coming up this morning, we're going to take a look back at the out-of-this-world events that took place in 2024. i always wonder, like, how do they keep
5:40 am
getting postponed there? who pays their bills while they're gone? you know you do. oh, i and working through the night to clear the roads to tahoe. we check in with the caltrans crews, making sure your trip to the sierra is a safe one. plus. jolene, jolene, i'm warning you, don't come for my friend the beyonce bowl. yeah, that's what they're calling it. steals the show from the nfl. but did it go off without a hitch?
