5:00 am
five. another round of wet weather is soaking the bay area this morning. the storm also bringing dangerous conditions along the coast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the rain and the high surf advisory that is once again in effect. plus a major court reversal. the new
5:01 am
developments on the case of former 49ers star dana stubblefield. we hear from his lawyer as his rape conviction is overturned. also, could family detention be back on the table for the incoming trump administration? we're hearing from donald trump's incoming border czar about the possibilities. this is today in the bay. good morning to you. on this friday, i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia. we want to get started right away with the ather forecast, because it's been a dangerous week along the california coastline. massive swells creating hazards from sonoma county all the way down to san diego. and the bay area right now is under a high surf advisory until sunday, forecasters are predicting 20 to 30 foot waves, and those massive waves brought many surfers to local beaches, scouting the best spots. we went more ocean, beach, but huge waves. a lot of people looking at them. definitely scary to paddle out.
5:02 am
a lot of closeouts and all that. so not something that i would dabble with. many of the other surfers say there is safety in numbers, especially under current surf conditions, but it's worth noting inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water because of the life threatening surf conditions. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. she's been monitoring all this. so what is the weather timeline here? we are still dealing with those very dangerous waves. and the high surf advisory continues until 4 a.m. sunday. so we are going to see these waves coming up, possibly to 20 to 30ft, life threatening surf. but as we take a look at the current measurements at the buoys, we're at about 12ft in san francisco, 15ft at santa cruz. and as this storm system continues to move in with those high winds and rain, we are still going to see more of those very turbulent conditions. they're all up and down our coastline, widespread rain with us for now, but eventually we'll start to see this activity tapering off over the next few hours. we've
5:03 am
already seen it seeing it easing up for the north bay and scattered rain across the east bay, parts of cocoa and alameda counties, as well as the south bay, seeing still some lingering showers. but overall we are seeing this system pushing off towards the south and east and the trend for today will be for the weather conditions to improve, at least for the inland areas, while still staying very dangerous near the coast. so i'll be tracking that and we'll talk about what's ahead with another storm coming in for the weekend in just a few minutes. cynthia, you are seeing a series of issues this morning and they areostly in the east bay. kari so let's start with this first one right now. this one is in the caldecott tunnel. it was one ca that went into the center divide. then as the log kept going on, four more cars got involved. at one point the sensors were red there, so some lanes are blocked. keep up with me as we track some more issues there in oakland. this was a crash. 580 at 980 on the slow lane. and the issues there again with the ponding water. so as e storm pushes through, we are
5:04 am
seeing those issues starting to come up right now. southbound 680 at scott creek, right before the dixon landing road. there is a car down the embankment. so these issues are continuing with the rain. we go up in just a little bit on 680, but the other direction northbound at otto mall, there was a car that spun out now on the right hand side. so crews are going to be busy this morning. we'll keep up with those issues, and i'll be back with an update in a little bit. back to you. happening today. santa cruz city leaders will update the wharf's tenants on how to help. after a large part of the pier collapsed into the ocean. now this week you may remember that 150 foot section crashed into the ocean. the wharf will remain closed indefinitely. now a total of 17 stores and restaurants along the wharf are now in limbo, and it could be weeks or even months before they can reopen. the city says it's working to find ways to help, which will likely include some sort of rent relief. a former 49ers and raiders defensive tackle dana stubblefield 2020 rape
5:05 am
conviction is being overturned today in the bay's thom jensen is live in san francisco, where stubblefield was drafted in 1993, where he played most of his career. and tom, this has to do with a racial justice law from a few years back. good morning chris. yeah, and stubblefield's attorneys say they're not surprised that this was overturned because of that law that was passed in 2020, just shortly after he was convicted in july 2020. in july 2020, that conviction, he was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after being convicted of raping a woman in 2015 at his morgan hill home, where she was interviewing for a babysitting job. a california appellate court determined stubblefield did not get a fair trial, and prosecutors violated the racial justice act by making racially biased comments about him being black. the woman claimed he used a gun, but police never searched the house for it, and prosecutors said the home was not searched, partially because
5:06 am
stubblefield was a famous black man on trial during the george floyd protests. this decision did not surprise the head of his legal team. was it long overdue? it was. are we thankful? yes. or did we expect it? we absolutely expected this case to be overturned. a legal expert told us that decision has far reaching legal impacts on cases like this, where there are accusations of racially biased prosecutioion. sbblefield's lawyers say now they'll work to get the charges completely dismissed. but first, next week they will start filing motions to get him released from prison. we're live in san francisco, thom jensen today in the bay, and a lot of folks have been following this one. thank you very much, tom. also new this morning, south korean lawmakers vote to impeach the country's acting president. han soo duk is now the second leader of the country to be ousted in just the past two weeks. his predecessor, president yoon suk yeol, was impeached after imposing martial law for six hours at the start
5:07 am
of december. opposition lawmakers b brought the motion against han yesterday over the acting president's reluctance to immediately appoint three justices in the constitutional court. south korea's finance minister is now next in lineo become the acting president. well, this morning, president elect donald trump's pick for border c czar is speaking out. m homan is generating controversy. this is over. comments. in an interview with nbc news. in it, the former director of ice suggested a showdown coming between federal and local authorities over deporting undocumented immigrants. homan discussed a san diego measure which would require federal officials to obtain a judicial warrant to remove those individuals from jails. bottom line is i'm shocked at what san diego did. and bottom line, we're still coming to san diego when we do our job. look, it's more it's more difficult, but we're still doing it. uc san diego's recent actions as having no legal muster, and you're just going to move right through
5:08 am
that. i think san diego's legal action is going to be will be in litigation. homan also says that a decades old agreement, which prohibits the detention of children for more than 20 days, needs to be looked at again and potentially re litigated. well, taking a live look now at the bay bridge toll plaza, and we can see the roadways are a bit slick. cynthia has been tracking what's happening out there traffic wise. but kari is also tracking what's happening weather wise. yes we' seen some heavy r rain in spots this morning, still leaving some puddles on the roads as well as the cars in front of you kicking up a lot of that water, making it hard to see. so we are seeing it tapering off for much of the bay area. still some lingering showers over the east bay, but elsewhere we are seeing some much lighter rain after it really picked up earlier this morning and we had some gusty winds. the brunt of the storm has moved on, but we are still going to have a slight chance of rain throughout today. as we look at the bigger picture, that rain is heading farther off towards the south and east and
5:09 am
look at the live view in oakland this morning. we are seeing a lot of people up, out and about and temperatures in the low 60s, so this is a little bit milder. but look at these winds at 25mph. so just a heads up that there may be some branches down in spots. and we will be mostly cloudy over the next few hours as our temperatures hold steady here. and then looking at our hour by hour forecast mainly dry the rest of today, but still a slight chance of rain later on tonight as well as early tomorrow. and then a bigger storm system is set to arrive early on sunday, so we'll take a closer look at this. coming up, cynthia tracking those early morning crashes. and i think a lot of them are involving that ponding water. and the cars may be going a little bit over the speed limit here. this one just popped up northbound 880. after you've made it out of milpitas at the dixon landing road. three cars involved in this in the fast lane. so the issues there continue to be with the ponding water. i think a break just got requested just a little bit north there on 680 as well. and we have in the opposite
5:10 am
direction southbound that car that went down the embankment. the issues are mostly concentrated in the east bay. so we'll go up into san lorenzo, this one also northbound 880 at the a street on ramp. after you pass the southland mall, that right lane is blocked. there was a chp break called. so still dealing with that issue. there is a lot on the roads. so we'll keep an update on this and i'll be back with you in a few minutes. thank you cynthia. 509 right now, the holiday shopping rush is now turning to the holiday returns ahead for you here on today in the bay. what you need to know high number of exchanges experts are expecting to see out there, but i bet if i got you a mega jackpot, you would have liked that. oh, yeah. we're breaking down the odds of winning more than the $1 billion prize. also, netflix and the nfl setting a new streaming record for a football games as queen b herself stole the show. much more ahead for you this morning right here on today in the bay. jolene. jolene.
5:11 am
5:12 am
5:13 am
be careful this morning and it's still raining here, but the rain will taper off soon and it stays mostly cloudy with temperatures holding steady. we will see more rain this weekend, so we'll have a look at that timeline coming up in a few minutes. and the berkeley curve is flowing smoothly. there's just issues
5:14 am
getting to this area will stay right there through oakland. i told you about the trouble spot in the caldecott tunnel. the one on 580 and 980. some ponding there. we'll check out this one that just came up. an 880 right around lake merritt. and the issue now that i'm looking at in the north bay coming up. good morning. i'm silvana henao from cnbc. wall street is set to open lower following a flat session yesterday, ith the dow eking out a small gain for its fifth straight winning day, while the s&p 500 and the nasdaq ended slightly lower. all three are positive for the week, with the nasdaq leading the way up more than 2%. the index is on track for a more than 4% boost in december, lifted by big gains in tesla and alphabet, and a rally in apple that's brought the iphone maker closer to a market valuation of $4 trillion. the s&p is just barely above the flat line this month, while the dow is on pace for its worst performance since april.
5:15 am
netflix's nfl debut sets a new streaming record for the league. nielsen says an average audience of more than 24 million people in the u.s. watched each of the two christmas day games. global numbers haven't been released yet, but the audience is expected to hit about 30 million when those are factored in. the nba also saw its most watched christmas lineup in five years, with an average of 5.25 million viewers, as it went head to head with the nfl on netflix. and well, now that christmas has come and gone, consumers will start returning presents and the national retail federation expects returns to account for about $890 billion this year, or 17% of annual sales. with amazon, you have until january 31st to return the items. target allows returnstems within 90 days, and walmart offers returns on most items bought between october and the end of december through january 31st. marcus kris. i don't know. i'm avoiding those return lines. i have nothing to return. i mean, if you have that window, you could wait, right? because
5:16 am
especially if you have the receipt. right. the issue, though, is that a lot of stuff is going on clearance now. so if you don't have the receipt, suddenly that $50 sweater is like. and if there's something you haven't. right. and not just that, but then if you have if you want to exchange it and you have your eye on something, it might not be available. so there's this one thing. there's so many things. i ordered something, they gave me two, but i think i paid for two. oh, okay. i was thinking of giving it, you know, as a gift to somebody. but then i got to find somebody who's taller. regan. yeah. gift. it. this is too much. we're not all as tall as marcus. thanks, ivana. thanks, alana. all right. trending this morning. who wants to be a billionaire? you still have time to get your lottery tickets for tonight's mega millions drawing. okay, so right now, the jackpot is at $1.15 billion. yes, $1 billion. n now, if you have a winning ticket, the cash option is $516 million. that's a big chunk gone. half a billion. yeah, i'll take it. the odds of winning the jackpot with all
5:17 am
five numbers, plus the mega ball, roughly 302 million. yeah, one. yeah. one in roughly 302 million. he's rubbing his eyes like, did i see that? right? wow. okay, the drawing is at 8:00 tonight, so you have until 8:00. i think it's like 759. yeah, i think i know where my husband is going to be at 757. he's always like, gotta go. i'm like, you had all day? yeah. i will tell you, as a meteorologist, you do have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than you do of winning. it's not even. don't flatter me. with a good time. he's like, try me. either way, you end up on the news. yeah, right. boom! an exclusive. all right, well, let's get started. this morning, some rain, and we are under a microclimate weather alert. and we are seeing the off and on showers there and some low visibility in san francisco, so it's still coming down. it's a soggy morning if you don't have to get out yet, maybe just
5:18 am
relax and watch out the window. but for all of us who are getting up and out the door and driving in these conditions, allow some extra time to get there because we are seeing some very slick conditions and also a lot of puddles too. even though the rain here on the radar doesn't look all that impressive, it was really coming down earlier this morning, along with some gusty winds, and this system continues to blow on across the region. and we are seeing the tail end of this system moving through right now. so a look at the wider view. you can see there's now snow in the sierra while the bay area gets some rain. and the rain is also reaching down to central coast as well. looking at mountain view and what to expect, there will be a lot of clouds still lingering today, some peeks of sunshine and temperatures holding steady, so we're not currently only making it into the low to mid 60s, which is actually a touch warmer than it was yesterday. so we'll see a high of 62 in martinez and 64 in san jose, 60 in livermore, as well as 60 in santa rosa.
5:19 am
tomorrow is also going to be with some milder temperatures in the south bay. it will be slightly warmer in parts of the east bay, up to 64 degrees in concord and sunday, also matching those temperatures, but that also comes along with some rain. we will still have some lingering showers and a chance tonight and into early tomorrow, but notice that this probably wouldn't really affect your outdoor plans. we're just going to see some hit or miss showers throughout the day on saturday and sunday. early in the morning is when the more widespread and heavy rain returns. and 9:00 we're seeing the rain really ramping up for the north bay and then sweeping through, but clearing out sunday night. and that's going to be the last of it. looking at the giant menorah lighting tonight, we are going to have some better weather conditions for tonight as we go into the evening with some mid 50s. looking ahead to how much rain we could see this weekend, the possibility of about a half inch of rain in dublin, but maybe even more than an inch in santa rosa as well as ukiah.
5:20 am
we've already had issues with some of the sll creeks and streams flooding, so that definitely will continue throughout at least the next few hours. and then saturday is mostly cloudy, a couple of very spotty showers, widespread rain on sunday morning and next week it is all sunshine as we wrap up the year and welcome in the new year with highs in the upper 50s. cynthia, you've been watching many issues spinning up on the roads. yeah. and now we go up to the north bay where we said we were going to keep an eye on what's happening around the area of approaching stinson beach. there is a mudslide being reported on one of the trails right along highway one. the marin county fire is on its way, but if you live in that area, you know all those curvy roads and all of that moisture and the mud that is possible to come down with that gravity, as we see those storms pushing on through, we go out to the dublin interchange. there are a couple of crashes going northbound and southbound on 680, again because of some car spinning out. so
5:21 am
there is just a lot of water on the roadways. and that continues to be an issue out towards livermore as well. coming down into the south bay just after you pass milpitas northbound 880 at dixon landing road. there are three cars involved in this in the fast lane, again because of some ponding water. we go on and check on that. this is still an issue with that car down the embankment. crews are trying to help that person out, so just drive carefully as we track all these issues on this friday morning. back to you. thank you. cynthia 520 this morning next here on nbc bay area news today in the bay. there's still some time for presents this holiday season. ideally the kind you can take to the bank. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc bay area responds

the ferry will take you from richmond to the embarcadero and mission in san francisco, and that free fare was made possible through a partnership with the contra costa transportation authority and the san francisco bay area water emergency transportation authority. the richmond ferry operates 14 trips per day on weekends and five trips per day on the weekend. well, the more on during the weekdays i got it wrong. all right. lots of families are still exchanging gifts, including ours in particular our respond and respond teams. consumer investigator chris gilmore joins us now with a few presents. happy friday. yes, we give the gift of customer satisfaction all year long
5:25 am
because, well, some companies don't. let's start with veronica in san rafael. she contacted the telemundo 48 respond team after her new $598 stove died. she said the store and the manufacturer were just pointing fingers at one another until consumer investigator arlen fernandez stepped in. the store refunded veronica's $598. travis contacted the nbc bay area response team after he saw one of our stories about vanishing concert tickets. well, travis had $2,365 worth of tickets disappear from his account. those were usher tickets. well, guess what happened next. those same seats went up for sale on the same website. the problem is, the website wasn't helping. so travis contacted us and we contacted the ticket company. it then restored his tickets. you can contact us online. like travis and veronica did. just
5:26 am
snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. have a great weekend. you too chris. our next top story we are covering for you today include home sales, which are up across the bay area. ahead, we're going to take a look at the numbers and what we could expect in the new year. another round of high surf pounding our coastline. the update expected later this morning on the partial collapse of the santa cruz wharf behind me.
5:27 am
5:28 am
5:29 am
we are tracking the rain. the wet weather is taking aim at the bay area and beyond, and meteorologist kari hall is timing it all out and has a look at when we might see a break. plus, working to clean up the santa cruz shoreline. update officials are expected to give today on the wharf following its partial collapse. this is today in the bay. oh, what a day it is friday. it is friday and it's the last friday of 2024. oh, wow. when you put it like that. wow. well, good morning to you. give it up. i'm marcus washington, and i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia. let's take a look at that forecast. in case you are trying to make your weekend plans. kari. that's a lot of green behind. yeah, we're seeing a lot of issues here with some flooding. and we have some flood warnings in effect. and the rain was very heavy earlier this
5:30 am
morning. and we're still seeing the lingering impacts of that, even though a lot of the rain has tapered off to some very light and spotty activity. we once again had some heavy rain earlier, and we're seeing this system pushing through fairly quickly. so that's the good thing about this weather is that it won't last that long. and we are still seeing those big waves near the coast. this is a look at the current readings from some of the boys just offshore. and it's showing 13 to 14 foot waves. and the high surf advisory that continues through saturday morning or sunday morning. and we could possibly see these waves at 20 to 30ft, very life threatening surf along with the sneaker waves. those are the waves that come up a lot higher than some of the previous waves, and it's really hard to see them coming at you. so you don't want to turn your back to the water and also rip currents. so anyone that gets out into the water can get caught in a current that draws them farther out into the ocean. and with the big waves we've seen, there's also a lot of debris out there. so we'll have to watch this very closely. we will see another storm system coming in this
5:31 am
weekend, so we'll look at the details on that coming up in a few minutes. kris and marcus especially keeping an eye on those kids. all right. so in just a few hours, santa cruz leaders will deliver an update on the future of the santa cruz wharf. and it comes just a few days after a 150ft of the wharf collapsed into the water below. today in the bay's bob redell joining us live from santa cruz this morning. and bob, this all comes as the weather conditions there are becoming more intense. well, as we just heard kari mention, good morning to you, marcus and kris. and i don't know if you can hear in the background, but the waves are coming in this morning here in santa cruz. so there is a lot of high surf that's going to be pounding the coastline again. the santa cruz wharf, which is behind me, this is the entrance to it here. it remains closed this morning. before we get that update again at 11 a.m, people. crews have been cleaning up debris from the part of the wharf that fell off on monday that fell into the ocean. that includes the restroom. three people went into the water. one went into the water. two had to
5:32 am
be rescued by lifeguards. they are all okay. spectators have also been stopping by to survey the damage. one resident says his biggest concern is the amount of debris coming in the harbor, says one of its top priorities yesterday was cleaning up as much of it as they could as another high surf advisory again returns through the weekend. the biggest issue i had, i thought that they were going to sit there and bang in my boat and sink it. if they say, hey, there's a wave coming in, you know, get up here and go into higher ground and go, okay. but otherwise, here we are. we'll ride it out. despite the potential danger, surfers in santa cruz took advantage of the waves yesterdayay. meante, the city of santa cruz urging people to adhere to beach closure signs to again the large amounts of debris that update from the city expected 11:00 this morning on the wharf. and we'll of course, have that update during our midday newscast reporting live here in santa cruz, bob redell. today in the bay. all right. thank you, bob. hey, and don't forget, you can keep track of this wet weather while you're on
5:33 am
the go. you can download our free nbc bay area app. that way you can find out what's happening. all you have to do is scan that qr code there on your screen. then you will receive those alerts sent straight to your phone. turning now to cinthia pimentel, because you've also been tracking the road closures in the north bay forest. yeah, and this one is right as you make your way into sonoma trying to this morning, highway 121 and highway 12 are closed. there are some flooding issues up there in the north bay that kari has been talking about. so if you're a local, you know which back roads you need to take to get yourself into sonoma or down into parts of southern part of 121 connecting to highway 37 there around the north bay. but those are your alternates this morning. we'll keep an eye on this and see how long it continues out for. the other issue there in the north bay is this mudslide along highway one, the steep ravine trail. not quite sure how much of it is on the road right now, but just be careful that as you make your way or trying to make your way in and out of stinson beach, muir beach, that area
5:34 am
along the coast, we come down and look at sunol. there is a crash southbound 680 at andrade. some of the lanes right there are blocked because of a crash, and we see a little bit of a backup now continuing further up into 680. so there's just a lot of issues this morning with the ponding. some spinouts just continue to practice that safety as we track this wet weather back to you. all right. thanks, cynthia. well, high speed chase in the east bay ends with a crash. and a man is now in custody. now, this is all caught on camera by our nbc bay area sky ranger. it started around three yesterday afternoon near 73rd and weld in oakland. chp saying that officers spotted a car connected to a prior crime. then the driver took off. that chase eventually ended when the suspect crashed into someone else's car at international and fruitvale. the suspect then ran, but a k-9 caught up with that suspect. he was arrested soon after. all happening today. governor gavin newsom is expected to make an announcement about an ongoing public safety
5:35 am
issue happening here in the bay area. he is going to speak in alameda county at 10:00 this morning, and we will update you with more information in our 11:00 newscast in the midday. 534 for you right now, the cost of buying a home getting more exnsive. if you are trying to make it in the bay. of course, even though mortgage rates are actually coming down. the latest numbers from california association of realtors shows prices are up in nearly every single bay area county. the san mateo county is the most expensive, with a median price of $2.2 million. santa clara is not far behind at 1.9 million. only three bay area counties have a median price under $1 million san francisco, alameda and contra costa counties. they are now all higher than this time last year, and one of the reasons home prices are on the rise. sales of bay area homes jumped by 14% last month. that
5:36 am
means people are buying again if they can afford it. it's absolutely obnoxious. people cannot afford it now i have to. they are living with me. your kids? yeah. your adult kids? yeah. my adult kids with their families. living with eight people is already hard enough. and living by myself in the future. becoming an actual homeowner is just seems kind of impossible. you're laughing? yeah. i mean, you just walk around and you see every house is $1 million houses. does it even make sense? what's that? now, as for down payments. many are buying those homes. they're actually relying on tech stocks. and to fund those purchases. and very recently brokers tell us they're actually seeing buyers cash in on cryptocurrency to afford homes. but the big caveat here without inventory, those homes, well, the prices are likely going to stay high. all right. now to a live look at i-80 in kingvale. you can see the snow on the roadway there.
5:37 am
chains are required on i-80 and highway 50. if you are headed up to tahoe. and i mean, we're talking snow, but that looked like a lot of rain too. and a lot of drivers had to pull over at a gas station near kingvale because of thosehain controls. several drivers had trouble installing their chains, and good samaritans did step in to help. people traveling on interstate 80 say they face delays because of the snow on the roadways, and they say conditions progressively got worse into the evening hours. got a little freaked out. so i called my parents and so they were like, just pull over, see what you guys can do. and so like i said, we just stopped over and they were kind enough to help. officials say make sure that you are prepared to drive defensively, that you have some food and chains with you, maybe a blanket in case you are delayed on the roadway because of those dangerous conditions. you have to be ready to spend a little time in your car safely if need be. kari, we were just looking at that earlier live picture and it looked like rain too. yeah, so the temperatures
5:38 am
have warmed up in the sierra and currently at lake tahoe it is 42 degrees, so way too warm for it to be snow just yet. and also we are seeing those raindrops on thlens at palisades tahoe. so that may be melting some of the snow. and we will see temperatures today headed for the low 40s. and we will also have that winter weather advisories for the higher elevations in the sierra throughout the weekend. so we're not going to see it really changing over to snow until sunday. and that's when we're looking at about 5 to 7, possibly eight inches of snow going into sunday afternoon. so we're watching all of that. if you want some ice without the travel, you might be heading to the sharks game tonight and it will be in the mid 50s. all dry as you're heading in. looks like a really nice evening. and also at gaugh kari at the oakland zoo. that continues. and we're seeing temperatures in the low 60s at 4:00 and partly to mostly cloudy into the evening. and it will be a mild night as well with upper 50s. on saturday we have the warriors game, so we're
5:39 am
starting out at chase center with some upper 50s. slight chance of rain for tomorrow evening, but of course you'll be inside, so that's the great thing about it. but there is ice skating right outside of chase center. and then looking at santa cruz this weekend. still way. stay well away from the water if you're going, as we've been talking about those big ves but enjoying time there, it will be in the low 60s. off and on. showers throughout today and mostly cloudy tomorrow and upper 50s on sunday. and we're going to, of course, wrap it up with a 49ers game on monday. really nice conditions there monday night for the lions to come into town. so we'll be watching that. cynthia is giving us an idea of what we may see mong ahead. yeah, we're going to go into the city, union square. we know it's super busy at this time of year. we have the hanukkah festival going on tonight through january 1st, along with all the shopping, the ice skating. so just expect some traffic as people head into the city. maybe public transportation will be your best bet. we come down here to the south bay. also a very busy
5:40 am

you updates throughout the morning. an investigation is underway. this is after someone snuck onto a delta flight heading to hawaii. so the airline said that that person was trying to go from seattle to hawaii on christmas eve, but they were arrested and taken off the flight before it took off. tsa says that stowaway went through a security checkpoint monday, but somehow avoided an id check. delta has confirmed that they got past the gate the following day and onto that plane without a ticket. now, neither tsa, delta nor the port of seattle police have said how that person managed to go undetected without raising any red flags. a former commercial pilot says the security system in place has been working for years. there's never just one cause, so there are multiple causes that come into this, and they probably involve not only a bit of lackadaisical inattention. it may be training, it may be compliance, but it's probably all of that. in a statement, delta said its

employees, quote, followed procedures and have an unticketed passenger removed from the flight and then apprehended. we apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels, and thank them for their patience and cooperation, end quote. now, in a similar incident last month, a woman boarded a delta flight without a tick from new york to paris. a local charities enjoy overwhelming support from volunteers in the weeks leading up to christmas generally. but starting the day after christmas, the pool of volunteers usually dries up. today, in the bay's jonathan blum visited some organizations which hope to find people who are still in the giving spirit after the holidays. more than a thousand guests come through saint anthony's dining room every day, getting a hot meal and conversation served up by an army of volunteers. they come here because of the fact that they love connecting with our guests. other volunteers and staff. and they've met some wonderful people. it's why so many volunteers come back again and again, but not always. right
5:47 am
after christmas, people get busy, they get back into work. they're not on winter breaks. et cetera. and so i'm not exactly sure what happens. we just have a lot less interest during that period of time. that's a bit of a problem, because saint anthony's does way more than serve meals. they run a free clothing program that's bursting at the seams. we get about 60% of our total year's donations in these two months during the holidays, and that means they need volunteers to get that clothing sorted and put on racks and into the hands of those who need it most help with personal shopping. so helping our guests who may be in wheelchairs or blind and help them, you know, describe what the clothing is and grab that for them. for those volunteers, it's a chance to make someone's day. we have a lot of guests who come in, and they just get so excited to find, like their favorite band t shirt, for example, right? and that makes me feel awesome. the volunteer shortage isn't unique to saint anthony's. at the san francisco marin food bank's newly expanded warehou, they
5:48 am
dole out 70 million pounds of food every year to families in need. after christmas, we see a significant drop off of volunteers to the tune of nearly 40% drop off. so this is a time when we really ask the community to help us do our work. so volunteer room is around the corner to the right. the food bank relies on some 2000 volunteers every week. our volunteer shifts are only two hours, and that two hours can really mean a big impact to those that are most vulnerable in our community. here at the sf marin food bank, they have volunteering turned into a well-oiled machine. these volunteers are repackaging rice into 1 pound bags, and they say the best part is getting to actually do something with their hands. this is kind of one of the first ways i've done this year, where i feel like i'm actually using my own power to get hands on and really help in a very direct way. it's perfect for teens on winter break. we just have a free day, and my dad was like, we have to get out of the house. and while it's the first time here for both families, it doesn't have to be the last. it's the new year.

heavy rain, some bouts of some of those bigger downpours. we'll see that into the morning on sunday. but by sunday evening this weather system is in and out of here fairly quickly as well. so we're looking at this weekend another half inch of rainfall for parts of the east bay, but it could be as much as an inch of rain from napa to santa rosa, and possibly a little bit more than an inch for areas farther to the north. our temperatures will be in the upper 50s and low 60s for today. we'll see more of that. so the weather will be improving this evening for downtown issa. if you want to go ice skating, it will be in the low 60s at the time that the sun is setting, but then dropping down to the upper 50s later on tonight. and a look at the rest of the forecast, the rain chances increasing on sunday, mainly during the morning but tapering off during the afternoon and on monday it is partly cloudy but then becoming mostly sunny for the last day of 2024, and our overnight lows will be quite chilly, with some upper 30s for
