plus, dangerous surf from this storm is slamming the santa cruz wharf this morning. we do expect an update today after that partial collapse that left hundreds of workers without a job and a major reversal. a court overturns former 49ers star dana stubblefield's rape conviction. but will he be released from prison? well, new developments on that case. this is today in the bay. good morning to you on this friday. thanks for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington, and i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia. welcome to your final friday of the year. and it's going to be a whopper. it's been a dangerous week a already on california coastline with massive swells creating hazards from sonoma county all the way down to san diego. the bay area right now under a high surf advisory until sunday. and forecasters are predicting waves of 20 to 30ft. now, a live look for you this morning over the
6:01 am
santa cruz wharf. this is where this morning's high surf is a concern. this is after a large part of the wharf there collapsed into the ocean earlier this week. the wharf is closed indefinitely. now, city leaders say they will update the wharf's tenants on just how they can get help. after a total of 17 of those stores and restaurants along the wharf are now in limbo. and it could take weeks, maybe even months before they can reopen. the city says that it's working to find ways to help, which will likely include some sort of rent relief. gosh, we've all been to those little shops. hopefully they can figure something out for them. we know that the weather is still going to be challenging today. kari. yes, and we've still seen the waves of rain coming through. but most of the biggest impact that we are seeing already happened earlier this morning, and we're seeing the heavier rain tapering off to some spotty and light showers, mainly over the east bay, as well as the coast and parts of the santa cruz mountains. and then looking at the bigger picture here we are seeing the widespread rain across the region and another storm that's developing off the
6:02 am
coast that will be moving in early on sunday morning. and look at the waves that we are seeing as a result of these storms piling up, that the wind along the coastline. and we're seeing it at about 13 to 16ft, with some of the highest waves right now at that buoy, measured off of the coast of santa cruz. we're looking at this high surf advisory continuing into sunday morning, and we could still see those breakers topping 20 to 30ft, along with the risk of more rip currents and sneaker waves. so that's a very dangerous weather conditions. if you're going to be along the coast for the weekend, make sure you're staying well away from the water, not even close to the water, because we are going to see the potential of those big waves coming up and also a lot of. damage there. so you can track the wet weather in your neighborhood by downloading the nbc bay area app. all you have to do is scan that qr code right there on the screen, and you can sign up to receive alerts sent right to your phone, no matter

where you are. and cynthia, you got word of a new crash in cocoa county. yeah, we go right in between pittsburgh and antioch. this crash on westbound highway four, usually on a typical commute day, this would be a trouble spot for people trying to make their way. maybe a little bit closer to the bay. not many details. i just know it's around the auto center drive. but those sensors not only picking up on the traffic that's building up, but also we see the green highlighted on your screen right now. that's the rain that's pushing through that you showed us. kari we are in the clearing stages of this one in walnut creek will stay in cocoa county. ts is northbound 680. as people are trying to make maybe their connection to highway 24 or continue into parts of pleasant hill. just be careful that one is in the clearing stages. there is also a trouble spot in the north bay. we're talking about this highway 121 and 112 closure in sonoma. the locals will know their way around it. maybe just avoid the area so crews can continue with that flooding and get it underway. back to you. all right. thanks, cynthia. well, we are continuing to follow breaking news this morning. firefighters in san jose. they are at the scene of a three

alarm fire on the east side. now, this video shows those flames shooting through the window of one of those apartment units. this happened at an apartment building on gemmell. this is just off of capitol avenue. now regan camera video from a neighbor across the street shows those flames shooting through the top of the building. it's not yet clear what caused the fire or if anyone was injured. thom jensen of course, heading to that scene right now, he's going to bring us updates throughout the morning. 603 now and new this morning, south korean lawmakers vote to impeach the country's acting president. han soo duk is now the second leader of the country to be ousted in the past two weeks. his predecessor, president yoon suk yeol, was impeached after imposing martial law for six hours at the start of december. opposition lawmakers brought that motion against han yesterday over the acting president's reluctance to immediately appoint three justices in the constitutional court. south korea's finance minister is now next in line to
6:05 am
become the acting president. a california appellate court is overturning the 2020 rape conviction of former san francisco 49ers and oakland raiders defensive tackle dana stubblefield. in july of 2020, dana stubblefield was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after being convicted of raping a woman who was interviewing for a babysitting job at his morgan hill home. a california appellate court determined that stubblefield did not get a fair trial, and prosecutors violated the racial justice act by making racially biased comments about him being black. the woman claimed that he used a gun, but police never searched the house for it. prosecutors said the home wasn't searched, partly because stubblefield was a famous black man on trial during the george floyd protests. the decision that did not surprise the head of his legal team is now underway, and they say they're going to work to get that case thrown out completely
6:06 am
and working also to get stubblefield released from prison. we're going to fight for that next week, and then we'll take it the next step to have this case completely dismissed. his lawyer says work to get dana stubblefield out of prison will start next week, as you just heard. but then the efforts will turn to getting those charges dismissed outright. well, now to a live look over at sfo this morning, another busy day of holiday travel on tap. but some air passengers won't be getting to their destinations on time this year. we did check the flightaware this morning. so far, sfo has one canceled flight today, 28 delays. sfo saw one 410 delays just yesterday and 13 cancellations, mostly due to winter weather across the country. and heads up if you're traveling out of oakland there, they have seven delays today. and down at sjc there are only five delays. tsa says today is one of the busiest travel days
6:07 am
due to the holidays. now, roughly 1 million people expected to hit times square for new year's eve to watch the ball drop. but checking off the bucket list item might come with buckets of rain. this year, all eyes are on the forecast for the big celebration. rain is expected to put a damper there on the party. meanwhile, as we just mentioned, severe weather is complicating efforts for people traveling home for the holidays, celebrations, rain, flooding, and even recent tornadoes are causing some big concerns in parts of texas. closer to home, here in the bay area, heavy snow and rain that's expected in the sierra. meteorologist kari hall, of course, been tracking all of this. so how much snow are we talking about? i mean, that's good for the sierra, but too much too fast. yeah. and the good thing is that we are seeing warmer temperatures in the sierra. so that's causing those snow levels to rise. so it's mostly rain. i wanted to show you the airport delays that we are seeing. in case you are traveling across the country. and we are seeing as of now, all
6:08 am
of those flights are on time, except for san francisco, where most likely the low visibility, the clouds and the rain is causing some of those delays. so let's get a closer look, at least for the other airports across the bay area, we are seeing them on average running on time, so we'll continue to watch those conditions there. we've also had some issues with flooding and some widespread rain earlier this morning, but it is becoming a little bit more spotty and lighter as we're seeing the brunt of this storm system wrapping up and pushing off towards the east. we do have e more storm system that will be headed our way by the end of the weekend, but a look at our hour by hour forecast shows that we still may have some lingering showers and a chance of the rain increasing later on tonight into early tomorrow. but not all of the bay area will see that rain. it looks like mostly the north bay and near the coast will have the best chance of seeing rain today and tomorrow. and then all of us will see that rain coming in once again early sunday morning. but temperatures have been quite warm and we're
6:09 am
feeling that as we speak. so we'll talk more about what's ahead in these the impacts from this storm system coming up. cynthia, you've been giving us a look at where we may fill up for less before we hit the road. yeah, of course we want to get you those cheap gas prices right now as people maybe head out early for new year's eve. you never know. these are prices thanks to people who report them on gasbuddy.com. so we'll start in concord with 345 at the bond fair market on willow pass road. if you know the area, we'll follow that with 361 at dimond gas in san jose on winchester boulevard. so by the winchester house, santana row, all of that shopping. and finally we will head to south san francisco with 369 at costco on el camino real. let's check now on traffic. there's been a couple of trouble spots all morning long because of some ponding spinouts, and we just got this new crash down here in the south bay, southbound 880 at montague. not many details, but just be careful if you are traveling through san jose, getting into
6:10 am
milpitas, or traveling further on north, we go up. and speaking of going north, we go to pittsburgh. this crash on westbound highway four at the auto center drive, we see just a little bit of backup going along highway four, making your way out of antioch. we'll keep an eye on this as the morning goes on. good to know. thanks, cynthia. bracing for possible tariffs next. the measures one bourbon company is taking to make sure the price of your glass doesn't go up. and a north bay bakery repping for the golden state. we're going to show you where it ranked among the nation's best. and a new mega jackpot for the new year. we break down the odds of winning tonight's mega millions worth more than $1 billion billion with a b. you're watching today in the bay.

impacts from the early morning heavy rain. it has tapered off to some lighter showers, and we are still seeing some wet roads, as well as a few downed tree branches. and people are still spinning out out there. it's gusty in san francisco. we're seeing the wind coming in from the west at 24mph, and also low visibility there. as we take a look at that camera, where we do have some light rain coming down and thenome more widespread rain across parts of the east bay and santa cruz mountains. but the heavier rain has already moved through. and when it did earlier this morning, it came along with some gusty winds. and then there will be a brief break before this storm system arrives on sunday. we are expecting it to make it here early in the morning, so let's time it out for you. still some spotty showers in between all of that rain and the rain. chances will continue into tonight as well as tomorrow, but the highest chance, as you can see, will be in the north bay of seeing some off and on rain throughout tomorrow, and then starting to pick up again on saturday or sunday morning. here is a look
6:19 am
at 10:00 sunday morning. we're seeing the yellows and oranges indicating some heavier rain, and then it's in and out of here quickly. so as we go towards sunday evening, the rain is tapering off and we are going to be dry for the rest of the year. sounds like a long time, but it's just going to be a few days. we are going to see some rainfall totals, additionally adding up to about a half to possibly one inch of rainfall for the weekend into early next week, and temperatures have warmed up sghtly. we've actually seen a warm front moving through, but eventually we'll see our temperatures dipping back down again, and with the forecast showing that we are going to continue to see the warm weather at least through saturday. sunday is when that cold front moves through. looking at the forecast this evening for the giant menorah lighting, it starts at 330 with the live music at 5:00. it's going to be in the mid 50s and mostly cloudy, but at least we don't need umbrellas for this evening there, as the rain starts to move out and some spotty rain in the forecast throughout the weekend. on

breaking right now att 630. an apartment building catches fire in east san jose. we have the all new video just coming into our newsroom. high surf slamming the coast this morning. all eyes on the santa cruz wharf, which partially collapsed. workers have been out of a job at the wharf as it's been shut down for days. we're live with the update expected today, and the rain keeps coming down across the bay area. we are now under a microclimate weather alert as kari tracks several advisories. this is today in the bay. thanks for joining us for this final friday of 2024. i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off and i'm marcus washington. first we want to continue to follow that breaking news this morning for you. crews are making progress fighting a three alarm fire at an apartment complex in east san jose. this video shows the

flames shooting through the window of one of those apartment units. this is happening at an apartment building on emily. this is just off of capitol avenue. rhyne camera video from a neighbor across the street shows those flames shooting through the top of that building. the fire department says no one was hurt, but the road is shut down, and they are asking people to avoid that area. thom jensen heading to the scene. he will bring us updates once he arrives. the other top story is wet weather. we he a live look across the bay area this morning, where we are seeing rain falling from the north bay all the way down to santa cruz. and that's where we're also seeing high surf hitting the wharf that recently collapsed in part. we have an update live from the wharf in just a moment, but in the meantime, meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that rain and it's still falling. yeah, we're still seeing some light rain and it was very heavy earlier this morning, so we had a lot of puddles as well as the gusty winds that brought down some tree limbs across parts of the bay area. and a look at the
6:31 am
radar satellite. we are now seeing much of the green here on the map in parts of the east bay, as well as the santa cruz mountains, and the storm is continuing to wind down for us, but still leaving behind the impacts of all of that heavy rain earlier this morning. there's one more storm system that's off the coast that's going to be coming in as we go throughout the day, and the very active storm pattern that we've seen has built up some big waves near the coastline. and this high surf advisory will be in effect until 4 a.m. on sunday. and we're currently seeing some of those waves off the coast of san francisco at 12ft. and the live buoy reporting that we have coming from santa cruz shows 16 foot waves that could build up to 20 to 30ft as this next storm system comes in. so we're watching all of these conditions, and in just a few hours, santa cruz leaeaders will deliver an update on the future of the santa cruz wharf. now, this comes just a few days after 150ft of the santa cruz wharf
6:32 am
collapsed into the water. t tody in the bay is bob redell joins us from santa cruz this morning. and bob, this comes as more intense weaeather contions are on the way. good morning to you, kari. we got the santa cruz wharf behind me that is still closed. we're at cal beach. you can't see it in the dark, but maybe you can hear it. the big waves are coming in right now as i speak. that is, of course, that high surf that you've been talking about all morni long, which unfortunately is going to be pounding the coastline, including santa cruz, this weekend. crews are still cleaning up the wharf. that section, that 150 foot section that you mentioned that fell into the ocean earlier this week on monday. spectators have also been stopping by to survey the damage. most famously, the restrooms from the edge of the wharf are stuck at the mouth of the san lorenzo river, which is not far from where we're at. one resident says his biggest concern is the amount of debris coming in the harbor, says one
6:33 am
of its top priorities yesterday was cleaning up as much of it as they could. again, as this high surf advisory returns for the weekend, the biggest issue i had, i thought that they were going to sit there and bang in my boat and sink it. if they say, hey, there's a wave coming in, you know, get up here and go into higher ground and go, okay. but otherwise, here we are. we'll ride it out. despite the potential danger, not surprisingly, if you've been to santa cruz before, many surfers took advantage of the waves. meantime, the city of santa cruz is urging people to adhere to beach closure signs again, due to the large amount of debris that update from the city of santa cruz expected. right here, where we're at here at kohler beach, at the opening to the wharf, expected at 11 a.m, an update, perhaps, on when this might reopen and when the businesses, there's many businesses on the wharf might be able to get back up and running. reporting live here in santa

cruz, bob redell. today in the bay. bob, thank you. and don't forget, you can keep track of this wet weather while you're on the go by downloading our nbc bay area weather app. all you have to do is scan the qr code right there on your screen. if you don't already have the app, and you're going to receive those alerts sent straight to your phone. now we want to turn things over to cinthia pimentel, because, cynthia, you've been tracking a crash involving a big rig this morning. yeah, it just came up a few minutes ago. this is northbound 680 marcus, two cars and a big rig. some of the lanes are blocked. i believe that they're trying to put up some markers, so just be careful if you're moving through that area. give crews a little bit of a way to deal with that situation. we stay down here and go to the south bay. this is gilroy northbound 101. as people make that connection with highway 152, there was a crash and then the car ended up on the center divide. so a lot of issues popping up on the roadways. you see behind me some of the areas highlighted in green, there's ponding on the road and there is this closure highway 121 and one 1212 up in sonoma as we deal withhose

issues of flooding on the roads. back to you. thanks, cynthia. well, happening today, governor gavin newsom is expected to make an announcement on ongoing public safety issues happening in the bay area. he will speak in alameda county at ten this morning. we will update you with more information during our 11:00 newscast. a high speed chase in the east bay ended with a crash and a man now in custody. this is all caught on camera by our nbc bay area. sky ranger. so this all started yesterday around 3:00 in the afternoon. this is near 73rd and weld in oakland. chp saying that its officers spotted a car connected to a prior crime. then that driver just took off. the chase eventually ended when the suspect crashed into someone else's car at international and fruitvale. the suspect was then ran, as you see right there. and then the k-9 unit actually caught up with him. he was arrested soon after. 635 now and new at six san francisco is delaying plans to install dozens
6:36 am
of speed cameras. city transportation leaders tell the chronicle they will roll out 33 speed enforcement cameras in march, which is a month later than originally anticipated. they tell the paper they have had trouble finding a venr for the cameras and identifying where they should install the cameras. transportation leaders say they are confident, though, that things will be. all systems go come march. and live. look now at i-80 in kingvale. we see some sprinkles on the camera lens right now, but there is still snow out there as well. chains are required on i-80 and highway 50 if you are headed to tahoe. how many drivers did have to pull over at gas stations near kingvale because of those chain controls? some drivers had trouble installing their chains, though good samaritans there were willing to help. people traveling on interstate 80 say they face delays because of the snow and the covered roads, and they say the conditions progressively got worse into the evening hours. got a little freaked out. so i called my
6:37 am
parents and so they were like, just pull over, see what you guys can do. and so like i said, we just stopped over and they were kind enough to help. officials say make sure you are prepared to drive defensively, that you have some food and some chains with you, maybe a blanket in case you experience delays because of those dangerous conditions. it's hard to sit there in the car safely if you're not prepared. you were telling us about that yesterday too. yeah, but you know, the things have been changing the weather conditions as they do. we've seen a warm front moving through. so that has raised those temperatures. and we're not seeing it coming down as snow in much of the sierra. in fact, as we take a look at south lake tahoe in this live camera, we can see that it is 43 degrees right now. so yes, way too warm for it to snow. and we're going to see those temperatures remain above freezing throughout the day as this storm system winds down tomorrow, a chance of some spotty showers and palisades village see a high of 42, and notice that even the overnight temperatures will be above freezing. but then by sunday, as the cold front comes in, we
6:38 am
could see things starting to change over from rain to snow as temperatures drop. and by sunday we could see the possibility of about 4 to 8in of snow, and the highest snowfall totals will be up around kingvale. so if you're staying here at home, you don't want to have to deal with that at all. we have a sharks game tonight at sap center. we're going to have some dry conditions as our temperatures will be in the mid 50s in the evening as you're heading out for dinner. and if you have tickets to go to see the oakland zoo safari, it's going to be really nice out there. milder temperatures in the upper 50s into the evening and staying mostly cloudy. and no more worries about any rain. and for saturday night we will have a warriors game. slight chance of showers in san francisco if you're inside chase center. it is all good if you're outside ice skating and enjoying the festivities around the sap center, the chase center, it's going to be a little bit iffy there. you want to just keep that umbrella just in case. looking at santa cruz, it will be mostly cloudy today. and as we've mentioned, stay well away
6:39 am
from the water. and a lot of those vista points and close to the water, the piers have been closed. so make sure that you're staying safe and we'll see that rain ramping back up again on sunday. cynthia, you're giving us a look ahead to the next holiday. yeah, because some people still have to work new year's eve and new year's day. and maybe you're doing a public transit. let's talk about bart. they're going to run their not only get to work on tuesday, but also get those celebrations well, on into wednesday. you can check the bart gov and the schedules there. we do have regular service on new year's eve for the golden gate transit, but they'll run different on new year's day on a holiday schedule. and speaking of holiday schedule for the smart train, that will be new year's eve. no service though. on the first day of the new year, that south san francisco route for the bay ferry also suspended until we start 2025. some other things to let you know about. we do have that sharks game down here in san jose, so expect some traffic around the sap center, but also around downtown as people make their way to maybe

christmas in the park. enchant those things happening in san jose. we'll go up io san francisco, though and talk about the chase center. that's also tomorrow night. warriors game at 530, some traffic coming off of 280 and 101. and there's also other celebrations in the san francisco union square that hanukkah festival. so expect a lot of traffic building up in the city by the bay. back to you. all right. thanks, cynthia. another stowaway on a delta flight. ahead on today in the bay. the way investigators say that passenger got through security and somehow boarded a plane with no ticket. home sales are up across the bay area. so what does that mean for you if you're trying to make it in the bay? well, we're going to break down the price you'll have to pay county by county. and he took the world by storm. so what's next for everyone's favorite hippo? we are checking in with mudang when we return. you don't want to miss it.

6:43 am
good morning. right now, at 643, we are under a microclimate weather alert. take a look at the very sloppy conditions you're having to drive in on 580 in dublin, going east and westbound. we are still seeing some puddles on the roads and the cars kicking up some water. although most of the rain has tapered off. we are going to be mostly cloudy today. only some peeks of sunshine and temperatures holding steady. there's more rain that will be
6:44 am
coming in before the weekend is done. we'll talk about the timeline coming up, and i have an update to the situation. northbound 680. we were. we thought it was two cars against a big rig. it turns out it's only one car involved in this. but we do have some of the lanes blocked. you can see the sensors picking up on some traffic moving through the area. so just continue to drive safely as you make your approach. and following the rain into the east bay, an investigation is underway after someone snuck onto a delta flight heading to hawaii. now, the airline said that person was trying to go from seattle to hawaii on christmas eve, but they were arrested and taken off the flight before takeoff. tsa says that the stowaway went through a checkpoint monday night, but somehow avoided an id check. delta has confirmed the person got past the gate the following day and onto that plane without a ticket. neither tsa, delta nor port of seattle police have said how that person managed to go
6:45 am
undetected without raising any red flags. in a statement, delta said to its employees, quote followed procedure to have an unticketed passenger removed from the flight and then apprehended. we apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels, and thank them for their patience and cooperation, end quote. in a similar incident last month, a woman boarded a delta flight without a ticket from new york to paris. well, the cost of buying a home is getting more expensive if you are trying to make it in the bay. even though mortgage rates are starting, are not coming down yet. the latest numbers from the california association of realtors shows prices are up in nearly every single bay area county. san mateo county being the most expensive, with a median price of 2.2 million. santa clara, not far behind at 1.9 million. and only three bay area counties have a median price under 1 million. san francisco, alameda and contra costa counties are now all higher than they were this time lastear. one of the reasons
6:46 am
home prices are on the rise. sales of bay area houses jumped by 14% last month. that means people are buying again if they can afford it. it's absolutely obnoxious. people cannot afford it now i have to. they are living with me. your kids? yeah. your adult kids? yeah, they're my adult kids with their families. living with eight people islready hard enough. and living by myself in the future, becoming an actual homeowner is just seems kind of impossible. you're laughing? yeah. i mean, you just walk around and you see every house is $1 million houses. does it even make sense? as for down payments, many buyers are relying on tech stocks to fund those purchases. so not everybody has that. very recently, brokers told us that they are seeing buyers cash in on buyers on cryptocurrency in order to afford a home. big caveat here without inventory, the housing prices are likely to stay high. we're looking to save some money. people trying to
6:47 am
make it in the bay. you can get some free home decor today. habitat for humanity. having a free furniture friday. this is at their restore location in oakland. the doors are going to open at 9:00 this morning. if you're looking for more deals, you can actually get 20% off donated items today at all three restore locations in oakland, concord, and san jose. i love it. you know people just because they don't want it in their house. you know, they're changing things over. they take it to that restore and, you know, keep it out of the landfill. it's good for. good for all kinds of. absolutely. yeah. there you have it. all right. well, this is trending for you this morning. as we count down to the end of the year, many people are wondering what is next for the global zoo sensation of the baby pygmy hippo, mudang. oh, it's so cute. the little hippo is now five months old and growing fast. she is over 100 pounds. wow. year end lists are calling her one of the most viral sensations of the year, even calling her the most stylish. the name mudang means bouncing pig or pork patty. she
6:48 am
is also bringing awareness to the pygmy hippo, which is an endangered species. the thailand star is known for her sassy attitude and gets a lot of reaction when she eats. she plays, she sleeps. one fan who saw her twice said she plans to visit her for a third time. i flew 18.5 hours. everybody needs a little bit more joy in their life and she's perfect for it. my goal is actually to return for her first birthday. oh, look how cute. also, now a global brand, she's a trademark in thailand, and with brand collaborations, she could generate $4 million by march of next year. you can see more mudang on the today show and the other viral animals, which made headlines this year. that is coming up at seven this morning right after today in the bay. she is cute. i'm sorry. i see i see a children's book in this for sure. for sure. that's already in the works. there's
6:49 am
also that other little animal. i think it's a hyrax where it sounds like it's saying mama. really? yeah. it's so cute. and then, like, people put it on, like, you know, mama, me like, because my mom didn't wait for me outside the fitting room where me showing my mom how nice my room is that i clean it. it's like mama, mama. oh, have not seen it. yeah, i want to see it now. i'm obviously clicking on different stuff. and you guys. all right, well, i've been watching the radar this morning because we have a lot going on there. we are still under a microclimate weather alert. and this is also the case for other parts of the country. it is a very busy travel day, and we have a big storm that's been moving from michigan all the way down to the gulf coast as we've seen these storms developing. but look at the major airports across the country. most of them are running on time, with the exception of sfo. that's now at on average, 44 minute delays. so make sure you're calling ahead. i think it's been the heavy rainfall and the very low
6:50 am
visibility that's been causing the issues. but we've also seen temperatures warming up across the country. and this is what's so pushing off towards the east with that cold front now across the south. and look at new york city today, temperatures in the mid 40s. we are expecting that to get a little bit colder as we approach new year's eve. so everyone will be watching new york city's forecast. here at home, we're seeing the lingering showers this morning. very heavy rain earlier today. but now this weather system is already starting to wind down for us, and we will just have a slight chance of rain throughout the day. a bit of a break from the widespread rain before this next storm system develops and moves in, and we're expecting that early on sunday. so let's go hour by hour today. once again, some spotty rain possible, and we'll see those rain chances overnight. and the north bay will have the best chance of getting some more additional rainfall. and then looking at sunday morning, with the push of the heavier rainfall moving into santa rosa by about 6:00 sunday morning and then spreading
6:51 am
through the rest of the bay area fairly quickly. at 10:00, it's in the south bay, east bay and the peninsula, and then the rest of the day we're seeing the weather conditions improving. with this next storm system coming in, we could see another inch of rain in parts of the north bay, and about a half inch of rain or less south of the golden gate bridge. our temperatures have warmed up and we're only in the upper 50s, low 60s. but where we are right now, those temperatures only rise a few more degrees as we go throughout the day. so enjoy the break in the rain as we see i in r san jose downtown. ice forecast looks great for this evening. we'll be at about 5:00 at 60 degrees around dinner time, looking fairly comfortable, but it will be cool evening and mostly cloudy. and tomorrow will also be mostly cloudy. a slight chance of rain, but better rain chances sunday morning. and on monday we're going to be in the upper 50s, but look at how cold it will be going into the last day of the year. we'll welcome in the new year with more clear skies, but
6:52 am
it will be chilly during the overnight. and now, cynthia, you're seeing more roads that have been flooded and closed in the north bay. yeah, the effects of all of that rain saturated ground. this is we go to rohnert park, rohnert park expressway. so if you need that, after getting off of 101, you're going to have to find other local roads through rohnert park. that roadway flooding crews are going to head to the scene, kind of assess that situation as the morning goes on and we get a little bit of a break in the rain, as you were saying, we're going to stay in the north bay. talk abo this closure right there. highway 121 and highway 12. in sonoma. you're going to need to find some other back roads to get you maybe into sonoma, out east towards napa, or coming down into parts of making your connection to highway 37. so lots of flooding issues. one more to let you know about in the north bay is this mudslide. if you live in between stinson beach and muir beach, and you need to get yourself maybe into mill valley or the city, this is going to be a bit of a backup as those lanes are
6:53 am
blocked on highway one. after that mudslide on the steep ravine trail. so lots of issues with the roadway flooding and some spinouts just continue to drive safe. we are looking at that northbound 680 crash, one car versus the big rig, not the two that we first heard about. that slow lane is blocked. you see the sensors picking up on that movement right there on 680. just continue to drive safe, please. back to you. thank you very much, cynthia. happening now sacramento deputies arrest an alleged carjacker wanted in san francisco. 34 year old anthony hurtado was taken into custody after leading law enforcement on a chase late last night. he is also accused of pointing a gun at deputies and firing several times. deputies continued to pursue him. he did not return fire, but hurtado eventually did surrender peacefully. he now faces several felony charges and is expected to appear in court on monday. he is not eligible for bail and we're back in minutes with a look at our top stories this morning, including an apartment building up in
6:54 am
flames in san jose. here's a live look this morning at crews there. still at the scene. we are looking at what crews just found out as they arrived there, and we have an update on the fight to contain the fire when we return. but first, here's laura jarrett coming up on today. we are sending you into the long holiday weekend with the latest on how severe weather might impact your new year's eve plans. plus, all the best post holiday shopping deals to look out for when

6:57 am
welcome back. we are moving you forward with a look at the top stories here on today in the bay. and we continue to follow that breaking news out of the east bay out of east san jose this morning. that's where firefighters are making progress. putting out the three alarm fire at an apartment building. it happened this morning at an apartment building on emily way, just off of capitol avenue. now, ring camera video from a neighbor across the street shows those flames shooting through the top of that building. not yet clear what caused the fire, but the department says no one was hurt. now, here is a live look again at that scene. this is where
6:58 am
there is still a large response. the road is currently shut down as crews keep mopping things up. of course we are working more with this. we know that there are eight people displaced and three units that have been burned there, so we'll contitine to follow that. tough time for that. so in just a few hours, santa cruz leaders will deliver an update on the future of the santa cruz wharf. this is a live look out there this morning where we can see those waves still rolling in. it comes just a few days after 150ft of the santa cruz wharf collapsed into the water. now, crews have been cleaning up debris from the part of that wharf that fell off on monday. the harbor says one of its top priorities is cleaning up as much of that as possible. as another high surf advisory returns through this weekend, meteorologist kari hall is tracking those conditions. tough to work in that, kari. yeah, we've seen at times some rain coming through. so we've had a very active storm pattern this
6:59 am
week forcing those big waves up along the coastline. the rain that we had earlier this morning is starting to taper off, and our weather will be improving, at least for the inland areas today, but still some dangerous waves all along the coastline and another storm system arriving on sunday morning will create some more of the bigger impacts that we'll see into our weekend. so you can track the wet weather in your neighborhood by downloading our nbc bay area app. all you have t to do is scn that qr code right there on your screen, and you can also sign up to receive alerts sent straight to your phone. all right. also today, governor gavin newsom is expected to make an announcement on ongoing public safety issues happening here in the bay area. we are prepared to meet him where he goes in alameda county at 10:00 this morning, and we'll bring you an update with more information in our midday newscast at 11. all right. traffic, how are we looking out there? my trouble spots have been the north bay and the east bay. east bay with spinouts and car crashes. north bay with road closures. of course. we've talked about all morning long.
