this year to only five guys left from their defensive starters in week one, but they are 13 and two 49ers were crushed by injuries. they go from first to last in the nfc. they're now six and nine. listen, every team gets injured right. niners had more than the lions. but the lions were devastated to rod. and they have 13 wins. and where the lions again where they are solid is that they're so good with their offensive line. thought of as the best offensive line in football. they've been injury free there. do you think again about the niners where they've had their injuries? i mentioned trent williams you saw in that graphic aaron banks the left guard. he is out. the niners have a patchwork offensive line going into this game tomorrow night. and how is that going to affect brock purdy. we will get into that later. but again the type of players that the niners have lost this season, that's been the bigger issue, not taking anything away from detroit. what they have accomplished so far and what they may accomplish next week, possibly winning the

division and going forward. but i think as far as the injuries that they've suffered, they haven't lost nearly the caliber of player that the niners have. let's look at the nfc playoff pick, which will not include your san francisco 49ers this game on monday night. really it means nothing to the 49ers means nothing to the lions. theyave to win in the season finale at home versus the vikings to clinch the top seed. we'll talk about who and maybe the 49ers will or will not play. but as far as the lions, dan campbell, what are you going to do? i'll make this easy for everybody. that way all the critics can jump out and start attacking, but that way you don't have to debate them anymore. we're bringing everything we got to this game and we are playing, and i don't care what it looks like and where it's at or who's this, who's that? we're going out to play and win this game out on the west coast. so there you go. what do you make of that strategy? dan campbell is dan
9:02 pm
campbell. i mean, he said from the beginning that the type of team he wants to put out there is the type of team that's going to bite a kneecap off and then bite the other kneecap off. and he's been consistent. that's what the players love about dan campbell. and that's why detroit fans love dan campbell. he is who he is. and that's not bravado. he's not doing that to have a quip on television. he's saying if there's a football game for us to play, we are going to play it now let's look at it from a contextual standpoint. they're embarrassed about what happened last year in the nfc championship game. that's the game that they should have won. and part of the reason why they didn't win that game is, as you mentioned during the highlight package, those two fourth down plays that dan campbell has consistently gone for. it didn't work, but he should have gone for a fourth down in the first half of the nfc championship game, and he kicked a field goal. he feels partly responsible for that loss. he wants to show something. those lions players want to show something they would love, nothing more than to go into that game next sunday night here on nbc bay area for the number one seed in the nfc

to also be a 14 win team going up against the 14 win vikings. only way you can do that is to take care of the niners tomorrow night at levi's. so the lions are going full throttle. what are the 49ers going to do. they are so banged up on the offensive line. and they are so banged up with running back that you wonder what situation is that going to put brock purdy in okay. you lost trent williams. you lost all these offensive linemen. you lost your running backs. people that could protect brock purdy. these are all things that you have to think about. if you're going to put that quarterback, the quarterback who almost everyone agrees is going to be your future of this 49ers franchise in a game that means nothing that the lions have just told you. they're going to bring everything at the kitchen sink. so chris forrester is the coach of the offensive line and the running backs. he knows the scenario for tomorrow night. kyle's very aware of what the situation is, and kyle is very aware of the of the situation we
9:04 pm
have up front what we're trying to get done. but i'd say the guys that we have in there are obviously nick socal has been here for a reason. he's a backup and he'll get his chance to start. we have hennessy in here who's learning quickly. charlie heck austin at left tackle. we've got some guys in here that that have played a little bit of football, and we feel pretty good with mckivitz and then puni and jake still there. so i mean it's not easy. we've we've definitely lost a lot of players that couldn't have felt better about the group we had coming into the season. i said it before, i think we had nine legitimate starters on our football team, nine guys that were starters in the nfl, in my opinion, and that's really that was a good depth to have and to think that that depth has been blown out of the water. and we now have five guys sitting over there that aren't going to play again. i know there's still some questions on some of those guys. that's that's a lot of guys. you know, for me, it's just it's just about doing my job, you know, not doing anything uncharacteristic and trying to do too much. it's go through my reads, get the ball out and help them out, you know, and help get them into a rhythm. obviously in the run game and stuff allow
9:05 pm
them to get into a rhythm. but when it comes to the pass game, there's, you know, definitely i can do my part in getting the ball out and being on time and, and, you know, help them establish, you know, their feet within the game and, and, you know, just continue to build them up. rod, i asked you, you know, putting all those new guys that don't have a lot of experience in charge of protecting purdy. that could be dangerous. you had a better word. it certainly could be detrimental. what does purdy have to do? do you think this is a bad scenario? well, he has to do exactly what he just explained. he's got to get the ball out quickly. but this is where your offensive head coach, kyle shanahan. and he's going to do this because he's no dummy. they've got to have an offense where it's all about getting the ball out quickly. they're part of the problem for brock purdy this year is that he's been holding on to the ball too long because he's waiting for guys to get open. he was doing that when he had trent williams. well now you can't do that. so the offense is going to be based on them getting the ball out quick with screens. and while the niners for the first half of the year, let's say, have kind of gotten away from the screen game, that has made them good over the past couple of years
9:06 pm
with purdy. they've gotten back to it over the last couple of weeks. so expect again for a lot of quick passes, a lot of short passes, a lot of screen game to not only keep purdy upright and healthy, but to take the pressure off the offensive line. but here's where the offensive line and the rest of the offense. they have to help out brock purdy and help them out themselves. the niners had five pre-snap penalties in the game last week. those are penalties before the ball is snapped where all of a sudden now you're in a first and 15 situation or a first and 20 situation. if it happens to be a holding, you get into those long down and distances. what does that mean? youu can rely on the screen game. you can't rely on running the ball drop. brock purdy is going to have to drop back and pass against a lions team that that blitz the most out of any team in the nfl. so you're going to get the help from kyle shanahan with the game plan. but the players have to help themselves by not committing mistakes. that makes the game plan, have to adjust and put that in the favor of the detroit lions. we will take our first break. when we'll come back, we'll talk about two of the playmakers for the 49ers one
