cover, so that removed us from the frost advisory that we thought we would have down here in the south bay. but i do see it getting colder into tomorrow. so we'll check on what those freeze watches and warnings are going on. we stay down here in the south bay. take a look at our day planner. after a chilly start, we should get more breaks of sunshine to get our holiday or work day going into the afternoon. maybe getting into that 60 briefly, but it will be a cool day around the bay. i'll show you the rest of the map. and of course, talk about the first couple of days of 2025. mike, you're monitoring the bay bridge metering lights. are they on? they are not. they are not active this morning, just like a lot of folks work schedule. but if you're watching this morning, i thank you for watching your choice over here. the bay bridge a choice situation, no slowing a little volume build, but nothing much. so there's just barely any brake tapping on the incline. more slowing does show up on highway 37. it started later, and it's a little less significant than we often see on a monday, but we'll watch that highway 4 still at speed again,
6:02 am
indicating lighter volume. overall, a smooth flow of traffic through the south bay. there's a disabled big rig over at the san mateo bridge, but no major problems. and out of the altamont pass, a smooth drive despite a little bit of fog. look at this. these are great travel times throughout contra costa county. back to you. thank you. mike 601 right now this morning, tributes are pouring in toonor the life and legacy of president jimmy carter. we have a live look at the white house and the u.s. capitol, where flags are being flown at half staff after the president's. the nation's 39th president died yesterday at his home in georgia. today in the bay's chris pallone joins us live from washington with how people around the nation and the world are remembering him. chris. lauren. scott. good morning. of course, being president was just one small aspect of jimmy carter's life and legacy. after he left washington and the white house, he spent the rest of his life trying to make people's lives better around the world. people in atlanta have been leaving flowers and notes outside the carter presidential center. remembrances for the

nation's longest living president, who died sunday at 100 years old. the tributes pouring in from around the world and across the nation. a moment of silence before the washington commanders game outside d.c, new york's empire state building lit up in red, white and blue. the flag atop the white house lowered to half staff. this is a sad day. president biden, vacationing in saint croix, remembered his longtime colleague and friend and reflected on his legacy. jimmy carter lived a life measured not by words but by his deeds. he forged peace, advanced civil rights, human rights, promote a free and fair elections around the world. my name is jimmy carter, and i'm running for president. biden, then a senator, was the first politician outside georgia to endorse jimmy carter's bid for president in 1976. he sometimes called america's greatest former president a nod to his life of diplomacy and service. after his one term in the white house. i

say peace and human rights and treating everybody the same has been what i hope will be my legacy. president biden said the thing that convinced him to endorse jimmy carter for president is the same quality that endeared him to generations of americans over the last 50 years. jimmy carter is an example of it. just simple decency. simple decency. and i think that's what the rest of the world looks to america for. while pointing out their many differences, president elect trump said on social media, jimmy carter did everything in his power to improve the lives of all americans. for that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude. and president biden has declared that january 9th will be a national day of mourning to remember former president jimmy carter. we a also just learned that that is indeed the day that his state funeral will be held here in washington. president biden has long said that he will deliver a eulogy for his friend jimmy carter at that state

funeral. scott and laura, let's go back to you. i'm sure it will be a lovely tribute as well, chris. thank you. well, coming up this morning on today, we'll continue to celebrate the life and legacy of president carter. coverage begins at 7:00 right after today in the bay. this afternoon, san francisco police plan to update the public about a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened more than a week ago. police confirmed a hit and run suspect died after they were shot by officers near union square on december 20th. family members later identifying the individual as peter hodge. police later confirmed he was a security guard at the christian dior store in san francisco. the shooting happened about 130 in the morning near grant avenue and post street. police say the same suspect drove onto a sidewalk, hitting two pedestrians. a few blocks away in the tenderloin, when police located him, they say he was armed and officers opened fire. he later died at the hospital. a virtual town hall starts at 3:00 this afternoon. 605. police on

the peninsula are looking for at least two burglars, who may have used a high tech tool to break in hillsboro. police say a pet sitter reported a break in around 6:00 friday night. officers discovered a shattered second story window where they believe the suspects got in and they discovered a portable radio frequency jammer that can disrupt wireless communications like security cameras and wi-fi. you can see police used a drone and a police dog to search for the suspects, but came up empty. they planned on blocking the alarm system is my estimate of what they were doing. had the pet sitter attempted to make a call inside the residence, they may not have been successful. they may have been able to block a number of signals. now, last month, kansas city chiefs player patrick mahomes and several other pro football players and basketball players were burglarized. at the time, the nba warned of south american theft rings targeting high profile athletes using signal jamming devices. the fcc says
6:07 am
these jammers are illegal. now to a live look at palisades tahoe this morning, where rain and snow actually made for some tough driving conditions right now. you can make it out a little bit there looking calm, but there's a lot of freshsh powder out there. traffic on i-80 slowed down last night as caltrans crews checked to see if drivers had chains. those who didn't. at least many of them ended up at a packed gas station parking lot. some people say they were stuck for hours as they waited for workers to help them put those chains on their cars. it's our first time coming up here, and then none of us know how to put the chains on. do your studies learn how to put it on before you come down here, and then be prepared for anything. the weather is so bad out here. we're driving back. forecaster cinthia pimentel joins us now. and as james said, practice this in the sunny driveway at home. yeah. before you try it, it's not easy.
6:08 am
something i learned very early in life. if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail. right. and we'll keep it at that. yes. and all weekend long, i was saying there was snow. there was wind. but you know what looks better for people driving up there today, maybe tomorrow or even on wednesday. there's no alerts for me to tell you about, but yeah, bring those chains just in case. those road conditions get a little bit slippery at lake level. let's go down to la. maybe the cold is not for you. it's not for me either. we go down and take a look at the upper 60s that will be met there. for people celebrating new year's day, those overnight lows for new year's eve are going to be in the 40s. a staycation isn't bad either. that's what i'll be doing. we'll be here in san jose this week getting people to forecast out the door. maybe you still have to go to work. that's all right. today in the bay does too. we stay in the upper 50s for today, carrying into maybe a little bit of a warm up as we go on into the middle part of the week. not
6:09 am
a stormy weekend. that might be for next weekend. i'll show you that forecast coming up. but for people hitting the road this morning, mike is helping you find those cheaper gas prices. we'll just try. we'll start in contra costa county. they got the best price in the bay in concord. 345 at bond fair market on willow pass road. then in the south bay, the middle number here is for san jose. it's got the low price of 357 at dimond gas and market on south winchester boulevard. and finally to the north bay vallejo for this last price here, solano county's low of 359 at national petroleum on springs road. if you were out of town, things might have changed, so check gasbuddy.com to get your best reference out there on the roadways. we're referencing mostly speed limit as the green sensors dominate. little patch of fog may be the factor over in the sunol pleasanton area, but no problem. as far as the speeds. but look over on the right side, we suddenly have some slowing. haven't seen this all morning out of the altamont pass. not unusual for that section of roadway, but today, very light traffic. we may hear about a crash from chp. i'll go check the report and refresh
6:10 am
once i get back to my traffic center. top of the screen. a little slowing for highway 37. that's really the only persistent slowing there. getting across the bay bridge. no metering lights yet. no problem on the span. and even the golden gate bridge looking great coming from the north bay into the city. back to you. thank you. mike. looks nice out there. well, credit card defaults. they jumped to the highest level in a decade. coming up next, the alarming amount of debt most americans are now facing and the very few that seem unaffected. and you probably asked google tons of questions every day, but you're not alone. what are the top searches of the year? the silicon valley giant just revealed their list. we're breaking it down. and one of san francisco's once hidden gems making a comeback. how soon you can expect the doors at the seal rock inn to reopen. keep it here. you're watching today in the bay.
6:11 am
6:12 am
6:13 am
final monday of 2024. let's go out to discovery bay. take a look at our planner there. we start with some clear skies in the 40s, and then get more peeks of sunshine into the afternoon. it will be a dry and cool day in the upper 50s. really dry and cool for the next couple of days, but i am looking at rain creeping back and that extended forecast i'll show you coming up. you know, we are looking south of discovery bay at 580, where there's that
6:14 am
slowing over there out of the altamont pass, and there are no crashes reported yet from chp. no updates from their reports. but i'm looking at dublin and our camera does still show low clouds. visibility may be a factor. we'll check on that drive coming out of the altamont and the rest of the contra costa county drive as well. coming up. wall street looking flat to kick off the final trading days of the year. the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 are just shy of record levels, with the s&p and the dow up more than 25% and 14%, respectively, and on track for the best year since 2021. the nasdaq is up more than 30% this year and is on pace for its longest quarterly winning streak since 2021. in focus in this holiday shortened week, data on housing, jobless claims and manufacturing defaults on credit
6:15 am
card loans are on the highest level since 2010. industry data shows lenders wrote off $46 billion in seriously delinquent loans in the first nine months of the year. that's up 50% from last year. write offs occur when lenders decide that it's unlikely a borrower will ever pay off their their debts. moody's analytics says hig income households are fine, but the bottom third of consumers are tapped out, with savings rate near zero foowing years of high inflation and interest rates. meantime, krispy kreme has some dealsing in the new year. today through wednesday, you can get free delivery with a minimum purchase of $5 and the new year's double dozen. that's two dozen original glazed donuts, or one original glazed dozen paired with a classic assorted dozen or specialty dozen for 2025. from
6:16 am
january 3rd through the fifth. you can get a dozen original glazed or classic assorted donuts for $12 with your cnbc morning business report. i'm bertha coombs. all right, just a couple more days to eat donuts before you got to start dieting for the new year to close out 2024. google taking a look back at its top searches. the top pardon me news moments of the year include the election. google says it saw a record number of searches for people looking up where to vote. the copa american soccer tournament was held in 14 cities around the world. also among the search engines top query this year, that's followed by the 2024 olympics in paris, which are jessica aguirre covered extensively for today in the bay. in terms of the most searched people of the year, politicians once again reigned supreme. so we have president elect trump at the top, followed by the vice president harris and the vice president elect, vance.
6:17 am
we saw the top of the ticket. really, spike, when president biden stepped out of the election. and then, of course, for vance, when he was named as the nominee, the top search movies include inside out two, beetlejuice, beetlejuice and it ends with us, a popular historic restaurant in san francisco making a comeback after almost four years since its closing, the seal rock in restaurant is reopening on thursday. it's located on the ground floor of the seal rock and at land's end. the restaurant had operated for nearly 50 years before shutting down in 2020 due to a rent hike. longtime san francisco chef and chocolatier alfred shilling plans to turn the restaurant into a parisian bistro, opening first with breakfast only, before eventually expanding to lunch and dinner. i've never been there. it looks like it's a great place. there will be your chance opening up for the new year. put it on your list. so many things to do around the bay area. we're so lucky to get to
6:18 am
do it. and good weather. finally, it was a gloomy rainy weekend, but we have better weather in store for people wanting to check out all that the bay area has to offer. no fog right now through san francisco. look at this beautiful shot there of the city. but you drive north and that's where you'll find the colder numbers this morning. into the north bay. 43. right now in san rafael. we'll get up into the upper 50s, though, by lunchtime. and it should be a lovely day, really, for everybody across the region. but i'm not seeing a lot of us breaking out of those 60s for today.t will be a dry and cool day behind the front that came in yesterday with that stormy weather. 59, in santa rosa, as well as over on in concord, 57 palo alto. and we'll do 59 down in san martin as we make those plans. maybe you're wanting to do something. get out of the house. warriors game tonight. we stay steady in the 50s and a light wind into the city. so just bring a jacket as you make that exit out of chase center,
6:19 am
it will be cold. we are looking at more of that frost advisory extending for the bay and even some pockets of a freeze warning for tomorrow where we look at those numbers subfreezing for parts of sonoma county. we look at those chilly numbers out towards the tri-valley and even down into san jose. we'll see if those low 30s verify, and we'll do some low 40sor parts of the peninsula as well. that will also carry us into wednesday, new year's day. so remember to bundle up. aside from wearing those cute sparkly outfits, all of that celebrations, it will be cold as you wait for that uber ride. we go on. and i was talking about the chance of seeing some rain in the picture through the middle of the week. we are looking at a storm, but i'm thinking it's going to stay mostly towards the northern part of the state, the pacific northwest and some showers. also some snow showers included in that. we'll see how far south that storm line moves. now, the next best bet that i have here would be as we go on into friday, people may be heading back home. we are looking at that rain there that could maybe
6:20 am
only be a northern california thing with some more mountain showers. and then the weekend looks to be mostly dry. so look at the 7-day forecast. we'll stay in the 50s and 60s as our highs. but those lows remember to bundle up and give the car a chance to start up. if you do still have to head to work. we start in those 30s and some low 40s, san francisco and along the peninsula. we'll enjoy some dry, calm weather, some mix of sun here and there. and we'll also watch for that rain chance come next weekend. mike, we keep checking the drive out of oakland. we do. there are no metering lights registered yet, but there is a little build in the volume so far for this monday.. very lht. and again, this is a vacation week for a lot of people. also my kids. i guess we're looking at a smooth drive and a light volume. we haven't seen the restoration of the commute coming in highway 37 really the only one showing a pretty typical pattern, but even there it's lighter than we often see. we're looking over toward highway four with no slowing. so that means walnut creek. the interchange there is just fine. the 680 corridor moving great except for one factor. talk
6:21 am
about that in a second. 580 does show that sudden slowing up to grant line road. we've seen that dublin camera show some slowing vasco roads at speed. but one factor could be some low clouds drifting across 580. that might be an issue. we haven't heard about anything on the road weather index or from chp. this is registering right here for highway 84 and coming south of the dublin interchange. as far as any fog shows, there's a disabled vehicle reported 8680. then as you head out of sunol just past mission north. so watch for that. should be on the shoulder. but again, watch for those flashing lights and into the south bay. no delays. we have not seen any of the slowing north 101 right around oakland road. we typically see about this time of day. and so that first slowing didn't happen. the second one probably won't kick in until later in the day. right now, very easy drive. back to you. all right. thank you mike. well, next on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. before we welcome 2025, we have one leftover piece of 2024 housekeeping for you that could protect a couple hundred or even
6:22 am
a couple thousand of your hard earned dollars. i'm consumer investigator chr chmura. isth

jen b asks, "how can i get fast download speeds while out and about?" jen, we've engineered xfinity mobile with wifi speeds up to a gig, so you can download and do much more all at once. it's an idea that's quite attractive. or... another word... -fashionable? i was gonna say- "popular! you're gonna be pop-uuuu-larrr!" can you do defying gravity?! yeah, get my harness. buy one line of unlimited, get one free for a year with xfinity mobile. and see “wicked,” in theaters now.

usually laser focused on methodically helping you save money. but today, consumer investigator chris chmura wants you to spend money, do it in a hurry to protect it. good morning. this is the only time of year we're okay with hurrying
6:25 am
to spend money. we're talking about health care, fsa or flexible spending accounts. over the next two days, please check your balance to see if you're about to forfeit some or all of it. many workers have fsa to put away up to $3,200 for medical expenses like co-pays, glasses and medicine through pretax payroll deductions. it's a good deal, but the catch is some employers require you to spend your money within the calendar year. otherwise you can lose it at 11:59 p.m. on december 31st. now, over the years, some, but not all fsas have begun giving you a grace period into the new year or a partial balance carryover. just not both. also, the irs says the maximum carryover is only $640 out of 3200. so a lot of money could be at risk. so now please check your account or ask your hr rep about your plan's rules. also,
6:26 am
you can just go shopping. it's not hard to spend an fsa. many online stores even list items that are fsa eligible. some also let you filter your searches to only fsa eligible items. happy spending and happy new year and make it quick. you've got two days. we've got a lot more ahead at 630, including tributes to a former president, the way friends, former colleagues and bay area leaders are honoring jimmy carter. plus, frightening moments for families enjoying some holiday fun in the south bay this weekend. a car fleeing from police jumps the curb at christmas in the park. the way police were able to stop that suspect when we return.

monday of 2024. thanks for spending it with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has the week off. let's check in with cynthia, who's got a look at your forecast ahead. we are starting with that frost advisory only for the north bay this morning. you guys. it did get canceled for the south bay. but as we look towards those numbers tomorrow and wednesday, i do see it getting extended and also bringing in some purple into your screen that freeze warning for parts of the north bay and south bay valleys to. our numbers are starting cold this morning up there in calistoga. 37 for you. 46 in hayward. so we're starting to see those microclimates peak peak on in. 43 in san jose. and as we plan our day around the bay, maybe you're heading for a nice hike or walk with your family in mill valley. it will feel cool amongst the redwoods as we get that evaporation going. only a high of about 57 there today. maybe your day includes shopping. how about we go out towards livermore getting to those outlets? it will feel like mill valley also, where
6:31 am
those numbers don't come out of the upper 50s, but that sunshine at least will be in the picture. no more of that stormy weather, at least for the next couple of days. we'll see how the weekend looks, but for now, i'll send it over to you. scott. cynthia. thank you. we begin with the loss of america's longest living former president. after nearly two years in hospice, jimmy carter has died at the age of 100. the carter center says he wa surrounded by loved ones at his home in plains, georgia. carter went from peanut farmer to governor of the state of georgia to the white house. president biden delivered a tribute last night from saint croix, where he's spending the new year's holiday. the president in his remarks calling jimmy carter an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian who forged peace, advanced civil rights, human rights, promote a free and fair elections around the world. he built housing and homelessness for the homeless with his own hands and his compassion and moral clarity. clarity lift the

people up and changed lives and saved lives all over the globe. president biden has declared january 9th to be a national day of mourning for president carter. biden also said he will deliver the eulogy for the former president at the state funeral, which will be in washington in the coming days. now, carter touched so many lives, so many americans, including those in the bay area today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live this morning about how he's being remembered here. good morning ginger. good morning to you, scott. well, there are so many memories and contributions to choose from, including one that left a lasting mark here of president carter and the bay area. in 2013, he came to lend a helping hand to our local housing crisis, and volunteers that he worked with say that he was always ready to roll up his sleeves and do the work himself. and here he is doing just that. back in 2013 at age 89, mr. caer, operating a power saw as he helped build 12 affordable

homes in oakland and renovate homes in san jose with habitat for humanity. it's an organization he worked with for more than 35 years. the ceo of habitat for humanity, east bay credits mr. carter for putting the organization on the map, and says he impacted tens of thousands of volunteers through example. now, rob coughlin of san mateo worked on mr. carter's presidential campaign. he also worked with the epa in the carter administration and considers president carter a friend. he's a wonderful guy. he's he's honest and decent and smart and compassionate. i mean, you know, he was the most powerful man in the world there for a while. and when he got out of that job, he went to work building houses for poor people. president carter won the nobel peace prize in 2002, and was recognized for his wk to find
6:34 am
peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development. president carter is also credited for working working on the environment, being the first president to commission a long range report looking at environmental concerns facing the world. it was known as a global 2000. now, former speaker of the house nancy pelosi issued a statement honoring mr. carter, saying as president, his work to restore integrity to the political arena during a difficult chapter in our history was a testament to his firm faith in the sanctity of the public good, which he always placed above his own. now, president carter showed up for so many people that he served, and he also showed up for the love of his life. rosalynn carter. his last public appearance was last year during her memorial service. they were married for 77 years. a beautiful love story, very well
6:35 am
intertwined with his lasting contributions as president. they are seen so many times as you know very well together. yes, yes. beautiful. i remember that ceremony well. ginger, thank you ever so much. well, the legacy of former president carter is one that will be remembered for generations. some of his notable moments of the presidency actually happened in his first year in office. on day two, he proclaimed a presidential pardon for draft evaders of the vietnam war. a few months later, in march, he arranged a meeting between his staff and lgb activists. now, it's credited as the first ever formal discussion of gay rights within the white house. and later that year, he posthumously awarded the presidential medal of freedom to doctor martin luther king jr. nearly a decade after the civil rights activist was assassinated. coming up this morning on the today show, we'll continue to celebrate the life of president carter. coverage begins at 7:00, right after
6:36 am
today in the bay. three barr police officers are recovering this morning after a high speed crash in oakland today in the bay's. bob redell joins us live from the east bay this morning. do they know what led up to the crash? we have video, which we'll show you momentarily. good morning to you, laura. we do know that the bart police officers were in two of their department's suvs. they were responding to a call of a life threatening emergency, an overdose at west oakland bart. this was this saturday afternoon just before 3:00, when they collided with another vehicle while they were trying to get to the bart station. we are going to again show you this surveillance video, though with a warning this might be difficult to watch. so here you go. in this video, you can see the two bart police vehicles. they collided just outside the west oakland station. then they hit a medical supply van. witnesses tell us the police vehicles did have their lights on, and it does appear that they were speeding to this call of a person in distress. you can see both squad cars. they were
6:37 am
destroyed. yesterday we were told all three bart police officers they are expected to survive but remain in the hospital with serious injuries. the driver of the medical supply van was also hurt, but there's no word on their condition. our crew on the scene saturday said there were no skid marks left behind, which suggests that both police vehicles crashed at full speed. the two after they collided and both of them had their lights on, but they came at iersections too fast because, look, she's coming up from that way. he coming from that way. they didn't even press brake. they didn't even slow down. they didn't even do none of that. they just kept going straight. they're not supposed to come that fast because they could have killed anybody over there. oakland police are investigating what led up to the crash over the weekend. nbc bay area did reach out to american west. that's the owner of the medical supply van as well as bart, but we did not yet hear back. reporting live. bob redell today in the bay. they're okay. thank you. bob. well, new video

to show you shows the frightening moments when a car crashed into christmas in the park in downtown san jose. it happened yesterday afternoon at around 5:00. witnesses say police were attempting to make a traffic stop. the driver tried to get away driving into the valet area of a hotel across from christmas in the park. then they started driving the wrong way on market street, entering the holiday display and eventually crashing near the center. we're told that no one was hurt. we've reached out to police for more information. 638. live. look at san francisco this morning. we've got a big week ahead with another holiday. let's get a check of the weather with cynthia. we are starting there. mostly clear. no fog right there through the city. so you're good to go. if you do have to head out. we see a b buy golden gate bridge right now. we should see some clouds rolling around through the afternoon, but not bad. we'll do a high of about 57 there in the city, from the heart of the bay. let's go down to the south bay. maybe a few clouds rolling around. we
6:39 am
