8:32 am
if you are like me or dylan or okay kaylee, your night of rest. >> how quickly can i go to bed on new year's. >> yeah. it is a fight to see who can make it to 10:00. >> this is nice, right? this is not a bad way to finish the year. temperatures up to 50s for highs today. we are looking for the heavy rain we had pass through here this morning. that's where we're seeing the heavy rain this morning. also, some slick roads across south dakota and wet weather through the midwest. record high temperatures through the southern plains. as we get to the middle of the week, it still gets a little messy. rain takes over the east coast and eventually moves up into the new england area, bringing snow and rain that way. it is still active out west with rain and mountain snow. sunny and cool the middle of the country. then we finish off the week fairly quiet. lake-effect snow. it will start to cool down in a lot of areas, and we are looking well, after a stormy weekend, we are left with some chilly overnight lows. but look at that. we have more sunshine in
8:33 am
the picture to carry us into the new year. our temperatures inland will stay in the upper 50s and 60s. i don't see our next rain chance getting here until we go on into 2025. that will be next friday. san francisco and the peninsula. so some stunning skies right now. if you can get out with your friends and family. highly and that's your latest and that's your latest forecast. >> dylan, thank you very much. just a fun way to look back at the year that was through the lens of the top google searches of 2024. but, first, this is "today" on nbc.
8:34 am
8:35 am
8:36 am
with its annual year in search report, highlighting the top trending searches over the last 12 months. here with a glimpse of the events that defined 2024, sara armstrong. good morning. good to see you. >> thank you for having me. >> this is kind of fun because as we look back on the year that just passed, google is a pretty good lens to remember what was in our minds and what we were talking about over the course of the last year. let's start with the news, if we can, for a moment. what were the key news moments that caught our eye? >> right. we're looking at aggregate anonymous searchch data. over the entire year and the election far and away our top topic of the year. we saw searches of where to vote hit an all-time high in the united states this year. then after that we have copa america, the soccer tournament, held in 14 cities across the u.s. a lot more soccer interest from americans than we usually see. of course, the olympics. i was tuning in to nbc for that.
8:37 am
we saw the australian breakdancer was very popular. >> i feel like snoop got a lot of looks. >> snoop dogg was trending. i'm excited for more of him. and then simone biles. >> we just saw simone. i was wondering if she was up there. really, if the election was the top searched phrase, it is no surprise that many of the most searched people were involved with the election, right? >> you're right. usually we see actors, athletes dominating that people list. this year it is politicians. we have president-elect trump at the top, followed by vice president harris and the vice president-elect vance. we saw the top of the ticket really spike when president biden stepped out of the election. and then, of course, for vance when he was named as the nominee. >> let's bring it down in entertainment, the palate cleanser, if you will. movies, there was a surprise here. >> yeah. i don't know if you saw "inside out 2". >> love it. >> you probably did with the girls. >> the girls have.
8:38 am
i need to see it. >> isn't it so sweet? i definitely recommend it. and a stacked cast. we saw a lot of interest in the cast there. that was followed by "beetlejuice beetlejuice." big year for sequels. we saw a lot of halloween costumes for that as well. and then third on the list is a movie that had a little bit of drama. we have "it ends with us." it spiked not just because of a best-selling novel but because of the off screen controversy. >> the justin baldoni, blake lively deal. >> 2024 was the year of the pop star. same for search, right? >> the pop girls took over the summer. it was so fun to see. we have the sweat tour coming in at number one. it was brat summer. we saw the word "brat" hit an all-time high in search history. short and sweet,
8:39 am
sabrina carpenter really skyrocketed in interest. she gave us hits like "espresso," "please, please, please." and then we have the i trust you tour. >> if you are watching, you are saying that's not possible. where's taylor swift. but the way we measure this is why she's not popping right now. >> that's a good question. taylor swift is always popular. we're looking at the searches that had the biggest increase from 2023 to 2024 to see what's unique about this tour. eras tour popular last year, popular this year. >> she blows everything away on a daily basis. >> exactly. versus something like brat, which peter didn't need to google, he was fully aware, but a lot of people when charlie xcx came out were talking about this. >> let's talk about theories when it relates to life and relationships. >> lots of theories online this year. i don't know if you have heard of the burnt toast theory. >> yes. i'm a little too online.
8:40 am
i'm familiar with the theories. >> i often burn toast. >> there we go. i'm chronically online, too. so this is one where people are saying maybe a minor inconvenience happens to you in the morning, but that could protect you later in the day. maybe you burn your toast, but that saves you from getting into a car accident, that sort of thing. >> i love the orange peel, which is when you hand an unpeeled orange to your partner. it is like a litmus test to see what they do. do they say peel your own orange or do they peel it for you? >> if they peel it for you, that is a sign that the relationship will last. i think the bar is a little low on this one, but people were really into it. >> there was one more. what's the last one we got, october theory. >> it's the idea of instead of starting on january 1st, start a little earlier, lay the ground work in october, and then you will be hitting the ground running in the new year. >> they call that the winter arc too, right?
8:41 am
>> i should have started by winter arc in october. >> it is so hard to end with october. >> if you are starting in january, that's not so bad. i'm starting in january on my resolutions but maybe next year. >> good news, i burnt my toast this morning, so i guess i'm in good shape. coming up next, we will turn from the year's top google searches to your favorite bestsellers from home to beauty and more. chassie post will tell us what we were all shopping for in 2024. but, first, this is "today" on

8:44 am
>> yeah. one of the most popular fashion items this year, this fabulous flannel sleeveless jacket/vest. it even gives a scarf vibe, right? >> yeah, it's cozy. >> this flannel type material is a great layering piece. here we have a team wearing it. they both look fabulous. i love that it's great for all ages. and plaids huge in 2024. so i love that you can get in on that trend as well. and also, the sizes small through 4x. they start at around $29. i just love these, right? >> everybody loves makeup that had a dual purpose. >> well, this had a triple purpose. this is from e.l.f. this is called the multi-stick. 71,000 ratings. what shoppers loved so much is that you can use it on your
8:45 am
cheeks, your eyes and your lips. and if you put it on, it goes on really creamy. >> yeah. the color really shows up, too. it drys in this wonderful powder finish. so it lasts all day. dylan, it's $4. >> and it's so tiny it will fit right in your purse. >> i mean, it is a 3-in-1 product and shoppers totally love it. i get why.a kiss it has a kiss of color. i love, love, love this. so this is a travel cordless rechargeable makeup mirror. and what's so great about it is the brand says it has 70 l.e.d. lights. it has three different light settings. and my favorite part, it's got a magnetic ten times magnifying mirror, which you can see too much. >> sometimes those are scary. >> it's really helpful. it's hands free because the
8:46 am
cover works as the stand. >> and it also folds up. >> yeah. you throw it in your back. so it's cordless. you can use this any where. traveling, work, the gym. so that's under $20, around $17. >> okay. you were writing about this mask. >> oh, my goodness. so kiehl's is a mega popular brand. i love this. this is their rehydrating mask. what's so great is you can use it overnight. you can use it as a 15-minute mask or a cold cream cleanser to take off your makeup. so it is designed to really bring in moisture to the skin. >> you can feel it. >> yeah. it won't clog your pores and your skin won't feel greasy. also, our producer's husband uses this in the wintertime. and i love this reviewer said that it feels like a huge drink of water on your face. >> what we all need right now. >> we all need that for our face. >> we got a popcorn machine for christmathis year. >> you did.
8:47 am
>> does the same job. >> well, this is so popular, dylan that 19,000 five-star reviews. it is from dash and it is a hot air popcorn popper. no oil. no preservatives. i ve this top thing there. you put the kernels in there, but you can also melt butter in there. >> that's the problem, the amount of butter. >> so good. and it is so fast. you saw in this video 16 cups of popcorn in under five minutes. this is around $20, and it is so cute and compact. >> you've got to clean the shower. >> we do. our viewers love, love, love this product. i totally get why because cleaning the shower, is it fun? no. but it is a lot easier now. this is called the wet and forget shower cleaner. it comes with a little nozzle. you just wet it. you spray from top to bottom. you forget it. 8 to 12 hours, it does all the work for you. no scrubbing, no wiping, no nothing. you just rinse.
8:48 am
>> really? >> you can use it on everything. >> sounds too good to be true. you can use it on your tile, on your shower door, fixtures, even your shower curtain. this stuff is a miracle. it's $20. it lasts for 12 weeks. >> it is a nice, big bottle, too. thank you. good one. to purchase these products, head to today.com/shop. prepare to be amazed. matthew is here to treat us to some mind-blowing magic right here in studio 1a. i'm checking for my wallet. thank you. but, first, this is "today" on
8:50 am
8:51 am
i feel like we are spread out. >> good lighting. >> do we have to place bets? >> i don't have any cash. >> matthew is one of the magicians you can see at speakeasy magic where they specialize in classic parlor magic with a twist. >> that is just what he has in store for us today. matthew,w, thank y for being with us. this will be interesting. i have not done live m magic on national television before. i have been a participant. this is all close-up stuff. this is hand work. this is like subtle. >> the best kind. look, you see magic often on tv or on a big stage. that could be great. but the best magic happens right here, this close. you know, this is my favorite. >> when did you first realize that you had this gift of slight of hand? >> i don't know if i ever had a gift. i don't think people do. you have to sit with a book in the mirror as a kid and figure out how do you hide things? how do you lie? how do you become deceptive and hide things well. you have to find a mentor to teach you as a boy and meet
8:52 am
other magicians that teach you. i don't know if it was a gift, exactly. it wasn't for me. i had to work for it. >> what can people expect at speak easy magic right here in new york? >> six years ago, the brilliant to robbins had this brilliant idea of let's call in the best pickpockets, the best mind readers and put them in one room and figure this thing out. and six years later, we're doing eight shows a week, tuesday through sunday. you're going to get -- you are getting to see a lot of different kinds of magic. often, you see one magician doing one sort of form. this is a big range. we call it speed dating with magic. >> this is a speed date for america right now. why don't you lead the way? >> i love that. any of you learn to do a trick as a kid? >> basic. >> how old were you when you learned it? >> 7 or 8. that's the window of time when you learn magic. no one ever says 45.
8:53 am
i learned this when i was 9. i still do this as sort of a warmup. i will sit backstage at the show. i will sit backstage and practice this. hold this for me, if you don't mind. watch this one. yeah. you see it melt away like that. >> where did that go? >> open up. >> what! >> it's a little invasive. would you hold out your hand for me. >> sure. >> i want to take one back. if i take one out, how many do you feel now? >> i still feel two. >> i haven't done it yet. you're holding kind of tight. can you open up all the way. if you hold tight, they go back in this napkin. it is not your fault. well, it is your fault. >> whais going on here? >> you have to help people see the thing in their head. that's what makes magic work. you trick their mind. it doesn't really happen in your hand. you help people see the thing.
8:54 am
i will give you an example. if you had a toothpick in a napkin. i don't know. what do you see? what does that look like there? >> an umbrella. >> stop it! >> look at that! >> that's so cute. look at that. a cocktail. i could make shots for you, if you want. that was in my mouth. you know, the funny thing about magic is it's old and it's been around a long time. there is this one trick that i love doing so much because everyone has seen it. everyone knows it. they think it is the oldest one, over 5,000 years old. anywhere on earth, put three cups down and they know the game, right? where you lose money, that game. >> i have never been so intense. >> i stole these from a bar. i stole a magic wand from a bar, too. they had some fake fruit, like rubber olives for decorations. i took one of those, right? cute. you spin the wand, you actually get another olive.
8:55 am
>> wow. >> thanks. if you spin the wand fast, you get a third one that kind of flies out. >> oh! >> that was for you. >> did you not see that? >> i'll slow down. >> what is happening? this is nuts. >> i learned this the hard way on things that were too big like lemons, limes, whatever they had around theitchen. it is better when you are this close, right? >> i alike literally -- >> where else would they be, right? >> what is going on in this place? >> there is no trap doors. check it out. they're solid. >> yeah. >> i wonder what drink goes in these things. they're like viking cups like the blood of your enemies. >> i can't. >> it's wild, right? >> take the wand for me. >> i have to tell you, i'm very
8:56 am
nervous. the illusion, there is just something about it. >> it's creepy, right? >> my analytic brain is trying to figure out how you are doing it. >> tap any cup. tap one. >> wind it down. let's see it. >> i will take one out like this. >> that's cute, right? there is a hole. you drop it through the hole. that's how it works. >> what! >> go straight through and let it fall like that. i tell you what, i'll explain. >> what are you doing tonight? >> i'll explain this. no, i won't. need a drink? what is your drink?? what do you like? >> after this, something stiff. >> we will have to see the rest as you close it out. >> okay. so watch this. here is how it works.
