5:01 am
to 2025 and have a look at how the forecast is shaping up for your celebrations tonight. plus, a final farewell to the nation's 39th president. the plans for the state funeral of jimmy carter. as tributes continue to pour in for the beloved leader. also, new video showing the moments leading to a deadly police shooting in san francisco. the new information police are now revealing about the suspect's final moments. this is today in the bay. and this is the final day of 2024. get those resolutions done because you got to make new ones tomorrow. happy new year's eve to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm scott mcgrew in for marcus washington. your morning commute in a minute. such that it is. let's start with a look at the forecast. cinthia pimentel in for kerry. well, we're going to go out with our final morning of bundling up as we are under a frost advisory. many places around the bay, except the immediate coast through san francisco, half moon bay. but we noticed some areas in purple.
5:02 am
that's a freeze warning where those numbers could dip down into the upper 20. we are starting cold down here in the south bay. 35 in san martin. we have those freezing marks right there through danville and up into the north bay. we continue with those low 30s from santa rosa over to calistoga. but our reward for the final day of the year will be some sunny skies. later on today we will see temperatures mostly in the upper 50s region wide, maybe a few low 60s down here in the south bay. d yes, i'll be tracking the cloud cover and how it could come in later on tonight. and we'll talk about the fireworks plans, of course, and people traveling all across the state. but for now, mike, you found some flashing lights on our oakland camera. yeah. no fireworks, flashing lights. there they go. i was worried. checking out the reports. then i noticed it's not on 880. it's alongside this frontage road. i believe it's oak port as folks are traveling south. no major injuries or incident reported on the surface street. in fact, i think it may be some garbage pickup or some maintenance work. we'll track that. but again, the
5:03 am
freeway traveling past the coliseum just fine. the nimitz, as well as the rest of these maps, alameda and contra costa county, both at speed. yesterday, highway 37 just showed some slowing. the rest of those freeways, typically building for the early commute, did not really kick in. we didn't see a backup at the metering lights for the bay bridge. we may see a little more traffic today. i don't think so, though. look at the altamont pass, much lighter traffic. it kicked in yesterday about 6:00 where we saw some slowing right around grant line. so we'll see how things shape up right now. south bay all the way along into the city and north are just fine. back to you. thank you. mike. well, this morning we have graphic new details, including new video from san francisco police showing the moments which led up to a deadly police shooting near union square earlier this month. now, we should warn you, some of the clips may be hard to watch. today in the bay's jocelyn moran has the story. terrifying moments caught on surveillance video not far from union square. it was december 19th. three people can be seen on kearny street street as a black suv
5:04 am
drives onto the sidewalk and hits at least one of them. hello, me and my friend just got hit by a car. police also sharing that 911 calll detailing how the chaos unfolded that night. the video shows that black suv hitting a cyclist who is able to run off. the driver of the suv takes off too, but not before swiping the cyclist's bag. police quickly identify him as peter hodge. tonight, they shared police body camera video of their plan to take hodge into custody. hours after the hit and run. so right now, he's parked in front of dior. all right. he's in that black yukon. last time we saw him, he was in the has what? a pistol and a rifle. so he has a bunch of pistols. one rifle. so there's a bunch of pistols. one rifle. we don't know about where the rifle is or anything, but we know that he's armed with a pistol. during their investigation, officers located the suspect, who was working as an armed security guard. their video then cuts to officers approaching hodge outside the dior store. he's coming out. hey, peter. don't
5:05 am
move. officers order him to put his hands up. put your hands up! get up! wait wait wait wait. are you worried about. we're going to use force against you. just put your hands up. put your hands up! hodge turns. police deploy a bolawrap to try to restrain him. hey, i'm gonna wrap him right. but it doesn't seem to work. officers then hit him with a beanbag round, but that didn't seem to stop him either. moments later, officers opened fire after it appears hodge draws a gun on them. sfpd enhanced the body cam video showing hodge raised the weapon before officers fired. we are not showing the moment he was hit. video also shows officers rendering aid. police say hodge died at the hospital. a glock was recovered at the scene. we still don't know why hodge was allegedly chasing after that cyclist. police want to talk to him. we're still looking for him. we'd like for him to come to us. he is a victim in this case. the da's office is also

investigating. jocelyn moran, nbc, bay area news. plans now set for the nation to say goodbyeo former president jimmy carter. the remembrances will begin in carter's home state, and then his body will make one last trip to washington. afterwards, he will be buried alongside his wife back in georgia. here's today in the bay's chris pallone with more on the funeral plans. across the nation, an outpouring of love for the peanut farmer who became president. he was a great humanitarian. he set the example for all of us. on wall street, a moment of silence for president carter the day after he died. flags from coast to coast flying at half staff. a growing memorial outside the carter presidential center in atlanta. in washington, people lined up to share their condolences, signing a book for carter's family. you know, i just think it's an honor to be able to sign and have that last, i guess. thank you for
5:07 am
everything that he has done as well as his family. the official memorials begin saturday, when a procession will take the former president's body past his childhood home, and then to atlanta to lie in repose january 7th. the late president will return to the capitol rotunda in washington to lie in state until the state funeral on january 9th. then jimmy carter will go home. what you saw was who he was. kim carter fuller, remembering her uncle jimmy. and he's with people that he loved so much. and he's probably up there bossing them around, telling them how to teach sunday school. president carter will be buried in plains, georgia, alongside his wife of 77 years, rosalynn, who died last year. the carter family is welcoming people who want to pay their respects to the former president, encouraging them to attendne of the viewings, either here in washington dc or in atlanta, or lining the procession route to watch one last time as he passes by. in

washington. chris pollone, nbc news. thank you chris. closer to home. let's take a live look outside at downtown san jose. it is a cold start to your morning. cynthia had to bundle up this morning. yeah, absolutely. we're starting this morning in the low 40s. but as we get closer to sunrise, we could come down a few more degrees. get into those upper 30s. but then after that, gradually warming up and seeing lots more sunshine as our reward for our final day of the year, we go up to the north bay, where we are under some freeze warnings in some counties up there. as we look at those numbers starting out in the mid 30s. now for everybody. a cold morning will turn into a dry and chilly evening for our new year's eve plans. of course, that looks good. we'll talk about the cloud cover in san francisco for the fireworks there. and also, that cloud could turn into some rain clouds as we track the possibility of some rain chances in my 7-day forecast. so i'll show you. but for people getting out the door this morning, maybe to work or later on where those cheap gas prices. mike. we're doing our
5:09 am
best. you know, we'll check particular cities right now instead of the best in the bay. we'll start in the south bay with the city's best for sunny bills low 363. great gas on north matilda avenue there. it's lower elsewhere in the county, like i said, but the best in that city. same situation for alameda county. we'll check the low for fremont in the middle here. that'ss 375 at warm springs. gas on warm springs boulevard in the south end of fremont. best price in marin county, though overall in the whole county. it's 377. that's in san anselmo at faras otto on sir francis drake boulevard. check out gasbuddy.com. get the best in your area. that's what really counts, right? on the roadways, we're looking at a smooth flow of traffic. green sensors around the bay dominating like yesterday. tuesday's often see more traffic than monday's, but probably not today. we may see as little or even lighter than yesterday. the altamont pass at speed. same thing for vasco coming out of contra costa county via vasco road is at speed across the bay. the bay bridge has no build up. yesterday we did not have the metering lights for the early morning commute. we may see the

same today. back to you. thank you. mike. the u.s. treasury targeted by hackers. ahead on today in the bay. the suspect and the information which may have been compromised. plus, a new group is set to take form in 2025. ahead, we're going to introduce you to a new generation and the challenges they'll soon have to face. look at those faces. keep it here. you're watching today in the bay.

december. and that is the story up there in vallejo, starting in the low 40s. that clear winter night, allowing for us to cool down. and actually, we're going to cool down even further by about 6 to 9:00. we're going to keep it in the 30s and then gradually start to warm up and see a little bit of sunshine. today we are going to stay dry and cool for our new year's eve plans, but i've got rain in that seven day i'll show you coming up. oh, and a richmond bridge. looks like traffic is camera shy. there was a steady flow of traffic heading across this bridge into san rafael, but right now we're getting a little bit of a break. a break for you as well. around the bay. lighter traffic right now. this connects richmond to san rafael, connecting us to the world of business. let's check in with bertha. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. looks like the bulls will get a break today. wall street is set to open higher on this last trading day of 2024. markets falling sharply yesterday as stocks lost some of
5:14 am
that momentum. we saw some profit taking from the post-election rally. dow on track for its worst month in more than two years. actually, the s&p 500 is headed for its worst since last april, but the nasdaq is up more than 1% in december. and man, it has been quite a year for stocks. we've got the dow up 13% for 2024. the s&p up nearly 24%, which would give it two straight years with gains above 20%. we haven't seen that in about a quarter century. and the nasdaq has outperformed them all up nearly 30% for 2024. meantime, the treasury department says it was hacked by a china backed actor earlier this month who stole a key from a third party software provider, then accessed employee workstations and some unclassified documents. treasury disclosing the breach in a letter to the senate banking committee, saying that there is

no evidence that the hackers still have access to its systems. the department has been working with the fbi and other members of the intelligence community, as well as outside investigators, to determine the impact of the cyberattack. the justice department and federal trade commission, annnnouncing a civil enforcement against the fintech company dave and its ceo for allegedly violating federal law. the agencies claim that the company lured users to its personal finance app by advertising cash advances of up to $500 that many would never receive. the complaint is seeking unspecified fines and repayments for consumers. and lauren scott, just want to remind you all markets will be closed tomorrow. they will also be closed in observance of the national day of mourning for president carter on january 9th, next week, thursday as well. in the antime, wishing you both a

feliz a prospero ano nuevo. happy and prosperous new year. same to you. same to you. yeah. hopefully you start the new year with a day off. perhaps. bertha. bertha. thank you. well, the numbers are in. you helped us raise millions to feed families across the bay area. as you know, we teamed up with safeway for our annual nourishing neighbors campaign. the goal was to beat the total from last year. and you know what? we did it through the holidays. donors raised $4.7 million, enough to fund over 9 million meals. we partner with local food banks that serve families across the entire bay area so that money stays here. all of us from nbc, bay area and telemundo 48. thank you very, very much for your generosity. fantastic. 516 trending this morning. so there's gen alpha, but 2025 marks the start of the beta era. generation beta starts tomorrow. it includes kids born until 2039. these kids will grow up
5:17 am
using technology and ai even more than kids. today. they'll face some big challenges like climate change, and they'll start their lives so much more differently than their gen alpha counterparts. they're going to be the first generation born into a post-pandemic world, and many of them will actually live to see the 22nd century. i wonder who decides that the betas and the alphas and all that kind of just go through, right? yeah. it's interesting. right? well, also trending a new year often comes with new goals. well, according to a new poll by the associated press, many people will focus on eating healthier excercising, saving money, losing weight. i feel like we say this every year. another big one was focusing on mental health. that's good ending, bad habits as well. so yeah, eat healthy smoking, drink today and then say it's a fresh slate. and then by about january 11th or so yeah. yeah things go back again. no. they say if you want to start a new habit, you've got to do it for what, 21
5:18 am
days. and then it becomes. that's right. it becomes part of your routine. don't change. so yeah okay. so by the 22nd bodybuilding it's all going to come out. it's going to be different. there we go. okay. last day of 2024. it's a cold one and it is a cold one. we are looking at a frost advisory in some spots. a freeze warning up towards parts of the north bay and the south bay. and those clear skies will mostly all of them are allowing for that overnight cooling. we just have a little bit of patchy fog there through the city, but we do look at our numbers there in the mid 40s compared to everywhere else. we've got. microclimates 37 south san jose, 32 danville right now, 38 over on in fairfield. and we get those cooler numbers as we start to move in through parts of sonoma. i've got you in those mid 30s, but after a cold morning we are looking at some sunshine, upper 50s to some low 60s in east san jose. we go up towards the tri-valley where it will be a cool but sunny day in those mid to upper 50s through parts of martinez and over in pleasanton. i've got you at 57. those 50s
5:19 am
continue up along the peninsula 55 in daly city, and we go on into the city where we'll look at a sunny and enjoyable day for friends and family, visiting 59 in the mission and a similar feel up towards wine country where those mid to upper 50s continue. slightly cooler out there towards the coast. if maybe you want to go clear your mind by the ocean. ahead of this new year's eve. we are looking at those clouds though, returning into the afternoon. so here's our planner for new year's eve in san francisco. low 50s, that cloud cover. and we might see maybe a little bit of peek of that overnight moonlight right as the fireworks get started. so just continue to check here throughout the evening to see if those clouds are finally breaking apart before you head into san francisco. maybe you're celebrating inland. also, that cloud cover that will happen, and those numbers coming down into the 40s. so where those thicker winter coats and maybe get ready for the use of those rain jackets as we go on and talk about what we can expect as we go on into 2025, for both
5:20 am
tomorrow and thursday, we see a line of showers going into the northern part of the state. how far south they move might just bring some cloud cover and a sprinkle or two, mostly to the north bay. i think our better chance will be here as we go on into late thursday and friday, where we get a chance of seeing some more widespread rain. but not looking too bad. we will see some chance of sierr showers sierra snow showers returning as well. so overall, after a cold start to our next couple of mornings, we should be in for say, some calm weather, a mix of sun and clouds here as we go on into the later part of the week. watching for that rain on friday. but then the first weekend of 2025 looks good to go now mike. someone may be delayed getting to the airport. it's early right now in the morning. i know for off airport operations, but at least one person, the driver of this airport shuttle, might be late getting to the airport. reports of a disabled vehicle. the airport shuttle itself. don't know what company, but it's on the san mateo bridge. westbound.
5:21 am
will track that. reports of a fire in the city over here, just outside of woodside. so we'll check to make sure it's not a major structure fire. and of course, we'll track that on the reports. but so far the traffic flow is just fine through these areas as we look at the bay bridge. no backup and no problems here at the toll plaza. yesterday we didn't even see any metering lights. we'll look to highway 37. look, see? still all green around mare island. we typically see the slowing start about this time almost every day. but look how light the volume is there. and over here at the bay bridge toll plaza as well. no problems coming off of the maze or coming out of contra costa and alameda counties. a smooth drive for the south bay. we typically see this for slowing around oakland road about 540. didn't see that yesterday. i don't expect to see it today, but we'll watch for the early signs. back to you. all right mike, thanks. well, next on today in the bay nbc bay area responds in 2024. nbc bay area responded, i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. straight ahead a look back and one story we are watching iont

bay. and of course, we'll talk about the rest of the region and our new year's eve plans now. mike, a beautiful view of the lights in san francisco. dazzling. yeah, well, you're looking at these lights. i'm looking at these lights here. so we have our departments. let's take a look at the traffic right now. not much to speak of. much like yesterday. very light traffic across the bay bridge. you see that from the sensor reads. if we look at the top of the screen, we're looking right where it says vallejo. typically. see? west 37 to show some brake tapping yesterday. even had some. not today. right now, very light traffic, including all of the altamont. still no slowing there. vasco road, you're at speed out of brentwood, byron, discovery bay. the rest of contra costa county moves very smoothly. alameda county, the one incident is on the san mateo bridge westbound. a disabled vehicle may be there for another 20 minutes or so. they're waiting for a tow truck to pull a van from the high rise. and that's about it for the bay. smooth, easy light drive right now. thank you. mike. well, with new year's eve celebrations happening tonight, there's growing concerns about illegal fireworks across the bay
5:32 am
area. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from the east bay. people in one city there, bob, say fireworks aren't a problem. just tonight, but just all the time. that's. we're talking about the city of richmond. we're actually here in the city of dublin. we're overlooking the hills behind me where tonight you might hear some illegal fireworks here in the tri-valley. and if you have a perch like this one here behind me, you might see them too. but north of us, in the city of richmond, it appears to be a much worse situation. and as you mentioned, scott, year round residents say illegal fireworks are no longer reserved just for new year's eve and the city of richmond or the 4th of july. they're happening many times throughout the year. a number of residents tell us that they were stunned to hear fireworks this past christmas eve. not only are these illegal fireworks dangerous to people and at risk of starting fires, the loud explosions are also very stressful for dogs. we spoke with the richmond police department, who says they will have extra officers deployed
5:33 am
tonight. they are not only warning people against illegal fireworks, but celebratory gunfire as well. you fire the gun in the air and then the bullet needs to come back down somewhere. it can go through the roof of a house, or it can strike somebody on the street. if you want to know what a war zone sounds like, come to richmond tomorrow night. loud pops. i looked out the window and i saw the fireworks and just trying to figure out what was happening. and it was in 4th of july. i tried to figure out, is it 4th of july? no, it's 25th of december. that was city council member cesar zepeda, who tells us he plans to ask the council to review and possibly strengthen the city's fireworks ordinance in the new year after he, too, has been shocked at the escalation of number of fireworks throughout the year. so a reminder if you want to celebrate the new year safely with legal fireworks, the city of san francisco will host its annual fireworks show at midnight tonight. and if you've been there before, you're aware that they launched these about 1000ft from the shoreline of the bay on barges between the ferry
5:34 am
building and the bay bridge, so you can get a spot somewhere in that area along the embarcadero. or if you've already reserved a hotel, you're in good shape. reporting live here in dublin. bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you. well, wash your hands. cases of norovirus surging across the u. this winter. that's according to data from the cdc. outbreaks are often seen on cruise ships, nursing homes, jails, as well as schools and places where people are gathered close together. during the first week of december, 91 cases of norovirus were reported. that's more than double the highest number recorded between 2021 and 2024, along with vomiting and diarrhea. the most common symptoms include nausea, stomach pain, body aches, headache, fever. but one other thing to watch out for if you suspect you have norovirus is dehydration. ucsf infectious disease specialist doctor peter chin-hong says washing your hands is key to limiting the spread. if somebody has diarrhea around you, don't use hand
5:35 am
sanitizer. it doesn't work against norovirus. use soap and water saying, you know, make sure you you use it for long enough so you have to sing happy birthday or, you know, a song by beyonce or something like that. and then the next thing you do is that you can clean surfaces with bleach. doctor chin-hong says scrubbing surfaces with household disinfectants can also help. it's fine for a notorious bay area kidnaper facing new charges. matthew mueller, convicted in the 2015 so-called gone girl kidnaping in vallejo. he's now accused of two other home invasions and assaults in the bay area. here he is in a san jose courtroom yesterday, standing behind his attorney. mueller has already serving 40 years for the kidnaping of denise huskins. vallejo police initially accused huskins of making up her story. she didn't. mueller was accused three
5:36 am
arrested three months later. now, the santa clara da says thanks to modern dna on prior evidence, they've connected mueller to two break ins in 2009 one in mountain view, another in palo alto. each time prosecutors say mueller attacked a woman, tied her up and forced her to drink nyquil or other medications. we're very fortunate that this is a case that was continued to be worked on by many individuals and many different law enforcement agencies. investigators say they were able to find dna to test on the strap used to tie one of the victims. mueller will be back in court on january 17th for a plea hearing. happening now a disaster fund is now available for businesses shut down because of the santa cruz wharf closure. last monday, a 150 foot section crashed into the ocean. the wharf and the 17 businesses lining it have been closed since then. the santa cruz county disaster fund will give out grants to local organizations
5:37 am
helping wharf employees. business owners say they need the help because the holidays are typically their busiest time of the year. it is it's really hard for my staff because it's slow in the beginning of december, it's slow in january. and so this, you know, these two weeks over christmas and new year are where a lot of people make their money and sustain themselves until it starts to pick up in february. so it's pretty tough. county officials say any fundraising efforts will be shared through the city of santa cruz. social media channels and website. well, we're moving you forward into the new year. starting tomorrow, new laws go into effect that includes several education bills starting january 1st, it's illegal for schools in california to notify parents if a student identifies as lgbtq. california will also require information about menstruation to be taught in existing sexual health classes. for students in grades seven through 12. meantime, there are new rules when it comes to children who help create content online. two new bills seek to boost
5:38 am
financial protection for kids hoping to go viral. one requires and expands an existing law requiring parents to set aside 15% of a child's earnings. the other extends financial protections to those who are under age of 18 who appear in online videos. now to a live look at the roads this morning, the chp urging everyone ringing in 2025 to celebrate responsibly by designating a sober driver or take public transit. the department's holiday maximum enforcement period starts tonight at 8:00. all available chp officers will be working through the holiday to make sure drivers are safe this weekend. the maximum enforcement will run through midnight on wednesday night, so play it safe, especially as we head into the new year. it is a cold one. i would assume we have to bundle up tonight. definitely bring all of those fabulous winter coats if you have them. this morning we are starting out checking out what's going on in our inland valleys. the frost advisories
5:39 am
and freeze warnings in place as we start out in the 30s. we go on and look at the mid morning hours. that's when we start to warm up a little bit. but it will be a struggle as we only get into those low 50s as we step outside, maybe for a hike or a walk with friends and family to get that new year's resolution started. we should see mostly sunny skies here, but then the clouds come rolling back in as we go on into the evening plans. i'm going to stop it right here at 1130 tonight. we could see some patchy clouds and maybe a little bit of a clearing right there through the city to give way to the fireworks. so depending on how fast that cloud cover changes, we'll see as far as going into the overnight hours, maybe you're staying out late. wow, what a trooper. couldn't do that. we are going to look at another morning where we dip down into the 30s once again in our valleys, and keep it with the low 40s there in the immediate bay. so yes, bring all of those long sleeves and maybe opt for the sequin pants instead of the sequin skirt later on tonight. mike, you're checking
5:40 am
back at the san mateo bridge. what's going on? sorry, i'm making note about the pants versus the skirt over here. we're looking at the san mateo bridge, where traffic still flows smoothly. but we still have this airport van that was stalled on the incline, waiting for another shuttle to come over in the area. i believe it's just the driver. i don't think they were passengers and there's no slowing. but that's the one incident, really. i'm watching everything else. look how light the green traffic flow is. we'll look ahead today. we do have a sharks game tonight, but it's at 5 p.m. because there may be some activities folks do after the game, i guess on new year's eve. so that's an earlier game through sap center, probably later traffic through downtown. but do note that's going on at the center. yesterday we had monday night football and traffic went just fine through the south bay. we're looking at great flow of traffic, and i'll let scott and laura talk about the game, and i want to talk about it over here. we're looking at the drive into the city. no major issues, but note in the last few minutes i've seen little bits of brake tapping speeds coming down as low as 45mph right at mare island, like yesterday. that's
5:41 am
the only spot on this map that we're seeing with any slowing. and no problem. at the bay bridge toll plaza, an easy light drive there, as well as the golden gate bridge coming in from the north bay. a nice flow, clear visibility, good stuff. getting into and out of san francisco. back over to you. all right. mike, thanks. a home game loss for the niners just ahead on today in the bay. highlights and maybe some lowlights from last night's monday night football matchup. i'm ginger conejero saab. we're live in san francisco this morning where we are just are still hours away from seeing the sky light up with fireworks. but we're going to tell you how the city is ringing in the n year with glitz andlam up g

5:45 am
and point out some spots and give you some benefits for tonight as well. well, the 49ers played their final home game of the season at packed levi's stadium last night and nfc championship game rematch, the niners taking on the detroit lions today in the bay's anthony flores has highlights. it was exciting. it was high scoring, but in the end the 49ers come up short as they lose to the detroit lions on monday night football. with the national spotlight shining bright on levi's stadium, the faithful packed the house for the 49ers final home game of 2024. glad you're with us fans still showing their support. even though the niners failed to overcome some major challenges this season, the biggest straight up injuries, pressure and down goes purdy at brock purdy to the list of injured players. the niners quarterback left the game late in the fourth quarter after hurting his right elbow. he'll have an mri on that sack, got hit on the backside. and yeah, basically just my arm
5:46 am
was on fire. doesn't feel the best but just leave it at that. so we'll see tomorrow this offseason will determine the future of the 49ers. the team will decide whether or not to pay purdy like a franchise quarterback. somewhere between 50 to $60 million a year. paying purdy might force the niners to part ways with other high priced veterans and rely more on their younger, skilled position players. despite being eliminated from postseason contention last week, the niners showed plenty of fight against one of the best teams in the nfl. try to approach it the same way we approach every game, try our hardest to win and try to play our best. so with the loss, the 49ers record falls to six and ten. they will close out the regular season next sunday at arizona. there's a chance t niners could sit brock purdy and start josh dobbs at quarterback. i'm anthony flores for today in the bay. thanks, anthony. 546 right now. counting down to 2025 as you're getting your new year's eve celebrations going. tune into nbc tonight. yeah.

display up in the sky later. whether you're going to be watching those fireworks in person at one of the new year's eve parties, or even at home now the pyro spectacular crew was busy getting things ready ahead of the annual new year's eve show, loading up new products and old favorites on the barge of pier 68. on monday, producer pat dias promises a one of a kind 15 minute fireworks display that's filled with magic to ring in the new year. in san francisco, you can watch the fireworks from the embarcadero later tonight, or you can watch them from one of the tops of san francisco at the mark hopkins hotel. they, too, are getting ready to host their new year's eve party, which in past years hosted 800 people in its ballroom. now, this year, they are trimming that down to a more intimate 100 guests, celebrating in a way that is reminiscent of the historic hotels new year's parties of the past. now, tickets at $550 a person sold

stick around. maybe you can catch us tomorrow morning here too, right? i mean, i'm just saying might just kind of set up shop. there's champagne in the break room. fridge, too, by the way. oh, hey. yeah, right. some coffee for tomorrow morning. ah. no kidding. chilled and ready to go. perfect. thank you. ginger. and actually play it safe if you're, you know, going to absolutely indulge a little bit. exactly. yes. some of the younger folks are aware that there are different types of beverages. but the adults know that you have to be responsible, right. so we have some assistance from our transit agencies, guys trying to help the celebrations stay safe with some special offers to get you home without getting behind the wheel. let somebody else do the driving so you can try out the all new electric caltrain for free guys starting at 8 p.m. tonight, new year's eve, through the end of their very special new years late night service. it ends with the last trains heading south out of san francisco at 1 a.m, 1:30 a.m, and 2 a.m. meanwhile, other agencies extend their free service beyond that. that would
5:52 am
be muni, ac transit and the vta. they offer free rides from 8 p.m. tonight through 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. that would be the morning of the first and not free, but a bonus. bart also offers special three line run at 1 a.m. look at the screen folks. we have the orange, the yellow, and the blue lines. the orange line provides richmond to berryessa service. yellow provides transbay millbrae to antioch service, and the blue line runs from bay fair to dublin pleasanton line there only. so remember to celebrate, but celebrate responsibly. that means get home safely, you and everyone else on the roads. now let's get to the roadways right now though, because it is a holiday evening for a lot of folks. want to be out late celebrating not a lot of early commute. the bay bridge hasn't seen any backup, and yesterday and today so far we've had no metering lights. so that's what's going on at one of the most busy spots in the bay and the north bay, we're seeing little bits of slowing, clearing, ebbing and flowing at mare island. for west 37. highway four hasn't shown slowing yesterday or today as far as the early morning commute
5:53 am
goes. a light, easy drive. we still have a disabled van blocking part of one lane westbound on the san mateo bridge, and that's really the only incident to report. the south bay moves very smoothly, including south county and the san martin area. and we'll get a look over here. i marked it as palo alto. but cynthia, we know that san jose. so even i'm taking a break. i guess with my brain it's already celebrating new year's eve. but it looks pretty clear here. yeah. it's clear. and those people in palo alto, san jose, starting with the heater this morning, as we do start in those low 40s. but we have our microclimates bright and early this morning out through pleasanton and santa rosa, where the valleys are in some frost advisories and freeze warnings as those numbers dip down into the mid 30s. but as far as our daytime highs, not too many microclimates to talk about. we will stay in the mid to upper 50s around the immediate bay, maybe get into some low 60s for the south bay, but everybody should get into some sunshine as we go on and celebrate the final day of the year. now getting ready for those new year's eve plans.
5:54 am
you'll find ginger on our rooftop later tonight. there we will see those numbers coming down into the 50s. pretty low 50s, pretty early into the evening and then into the 40s with a little bit of cloud cover there right around midnight. if you're celebrating down here in san jose, we will see our temperatures also coming down into the low 50s, a little bit warmer into our evening hours. that cloud cover may help keep us a little bit warmer as we go on and carry it into our new year's day up into the north bay. that's where the numbers will drop quicker later on this evening, and we might start tomorrow morning again with the frost advisory there into the north bay, but that is yet to watch. another thing to watch here is some of the models want to hit at things changing as we welcome in 2025. and what do i mean by that? we could be getting a little bit of moisture coming in from a system to our north, and that might bring cloud cover for everybody. but those rain chances for the north bay and maybe scattering about just pockets of some light
5:55 am
sprinkles and that cloud cover that continues, i see those chances continuing for thursday, but again isolated to the north. so we'll just watch the clouds drifting here and there through parts of san francisco and the peninsula, where i see everybody getting into a better chance as as we go on into the first weekend of 2025. but don't worry, that's about it right there. that rain chance on friday, because we go on into saturday and sunday and even into the early parts of next week, we continue to see the sunshine and feel the numbers in the low 60s to carry us into january. wow, it's already here, scott. all right. well, happening now in east bay. nonprofit expanding free hikes and outings at a place which boasts some majestic views of the bay area the group saved. mount diablo is making that announcement as we head into 2025, the events will be free to the public, include 38 excursions. for more details, you can visit save mount diablo.org. well, a weekend trip at sea turns bad for a group of tourists. all new at 6:00, the

tracking the warnings now in place for parts of the bay area and parts of the world already ringing in 2025. look at this. from new zealand to australia, we have a look at the celebrations already underway this morning. this is today in the bay. well very good tuesday morning to you. new year's eve i'm scott mcgrew, filling in for marcus. and i'm laura garcia. welcome to this final day of the year. all right. it's a cold start to our morning as well. and i would imagine it's going to be cold through the day. yeah, it will be. it will be a gradual warm up, so might not be till mid morning where we start to feel that sunshine warmth. finally we are looking at some frost advisories in place, the freeze warnings and the purple up towards the north bay and some of the foothills down here in the south bay. notice though, that parts of san francisco and the immediate coastline aren't in this. it just takes a little bit longer to cool down those temperatures out by the water, as it does in our inland
