aheard ahead of the midnight ball drop. with storms on the move, will rain and snow put a damper on your celebration. breaking news. blackout. a major power outage leaving most of puerto rico in the dark this new year's eve. more than 80% of the island is without power. the latest on efforts to get the lights back on. divorce finalized. angelina joli and brad pitt's high-profile divorce saga finally ends after an eight-year legal battle. why it took so long and what is next for the former couple. plus, looking back on 2024 on this last day of the year. we are paying tribute to the lives that we lost over the year from world leaders to popop sta, legendary actors. we're remembering their talents and their contributions to the world. happy almost new year. we do begin with breaking news out of puerto rico. a large part of the u.s. territory very likely going to be ringing in the new year in the dark. there is a massive blackout on the island right now affecting

more than a million customers. it is the latest outage on the island in a year that has been plagued with outages. leading us off this hour, nbc news correspondent george solis who is tracking the story for us. george, what do we hear from the authorities in puerto rico at this hour about the timeline to get that power restored and what might have caused this outage in the first place? >> yeah, hey, kate. good to be with you. the timeline is that it is an aggressive approach to get everyone back on the grid here. luma energy, the private company that runs the power on the island, updating numbers we can get to you. they are saying about 73% of the customers are online and they're getting the hospitals, critical infrastructure, basically everything that needs to be up and running running as fast as possible. keep in mind there's still potentially a million without power and more than likely going to be ringing in the new year in the dark. really just frustrating a lot of the people impacted by the power outages, rampant power outages we've faced since 2017 after the island's power grid was battered by hurricane maria. again, a lot of the

infrastructure already aging and crumbling and just the subject of ire for a lot of residents who have been calling for the energy grid there to be not only upgraded but to be operated by another entity. so, again, we are seeing these numbers starting to creep up which is good news for a lot of the residents there but, again, still not really -- a lot of residents still not confident it is all going to take place before the new year's kicks off today. but, again, as we are seeing the progress starting to take place, a little bit of hope there, kate. >> yeah, and we are talking about u.s. citizens in puerto rico. you would think about if it were a state what would it be like. they've been facing so many power outages. talk about that frustration that's been building. >> it has been building for years now. it is not only just since the hurricane. i mean back in 2022, you might remember governor pedro peraluci holding a press conference and the power goes off. you had pop star bad bunny bringing new attention to the power outage there with his song

released, sort of a protest song about the issues the island is facing. then again, you have a holiday here that's going to impact so many people there as well, but many not just thinking about the holiday itself. they're thinking about long term. how is it going to impact the elderly, how is it going to impact schools, businesses, et cetera. we heard from some frustrated residents earlier today. here is what they told us. >> yes, it is totally frustrating that the government don't do anything. the people say that we don't want luma because it is the worst service of electricity that we have in the history of our country. it is sad that in this day, the last day of the year, that impact our traditions, our holiday traditions. >> kate, not only do you have the current governor demanding answers you have the incoming governor that's going to start in the new year already looking to make some changes to help with this infrastructure and grid problem.

kate. >> george solis for us. thank you. ♪ ♪ memorial services for former president jimmy carter will begin on saturday. the former president will be honored over five days in his home state of georgia and washington, d.c. a national funeral service will be held in the nation's capital on january 9th. president biden is expected to deliver the eulogy. mr. carter, as you know, the 39th president, died on sunday at the age of 100. nbc news senior white house correspondent kelly o'donnell joins me now from the north lawn with a bit more. kelly, take us through the events that have been planned so far. >> reporter: well, it will all begin right in plains where jimmy carter spent so much of his life, and so people in his hometown community who referred to him as mr. jimmy more than mr. president from the times that i have spent there. he will travel from plains to atlanta and, of course, a stop at the capital there is a

reminder that he served as governor of georgia. and then there will be days of lying in repose at the carter presidential center so those who want to pay their respects in person, his fellow georgians will have an opportunity to do that. then there will be a chapter here in washington to recount, of course, his time in the white house and his time as a national political figure. he will lie in state at the u.s. capitol, and that is a rare honor that was provided by the house speaker and the leader of the senate, making way for that, another chance for people to pay their respects. that will culminate in the national funeral which will be on thursday, and president biden has called that a national day of mourning. so federal offices will be closed. so it is personal, it is home state, it is national in its dimensions. kate. >> yeah, and president biden knew president carter for decades. do we have a sense of what he might say during the eulogy?

>> reporter: certainly that personal connection will be reflected in his remarks. they have known each other for more than 50 years, and it was joe biden as a young senator who was the first in that body to endorse jimmy carter when he was running for president in 1976. that was a long-shot bid and that relationship was forged early and remained over the years. certainly they have kept in touch, in particular during these couple of years that jimmy carter was in hospice care, staying at home, no longer seeking any medical intervention, and he's also been in touch with the family, and certainly in the couple of days since his passing. but a long-term connection, so i would expect that the president would speak of the decency of jimmy carter. that's something he did in his initial comments right after his passing, and to reflect on that personal history and the importance of the kind of leadership that jimmy carter had in the white house and beyond, especially as a humanitarian.

kate. >> kelly o'donnell with that. kelly, thank you. happy new year to you. speaking of, the countdown to midnight is on, from fireworks over the las vegas strip to seattle's space needle, cities all across the country getting ready to ring in the new year. here in new york city, final preparations are underway for tonight's ball drop. more than a million people are expected to flood times square for that famous celebration. crowds have been lining up since early this morning to secure their spot. joining me from there, nbc news correspondent antonia hylton in times square. antonia, a million there, but people around the country tend to watch this. set the scene for us. how are things looking? what can we expect? >> reporter: they're looking pretty good. i don't know what you can see behind me here, but there are lots of rehearsals going on, dancers, musicians. some big names expected tonight, lenny kravitz, carrie underwood, the jonas brothers, tlc. before you can come here and enjoy the show, anyone who is

lined up right now on 6th and 8th avenues, you have a little ways to go because these security check points are slow. the nypd is leaving nothing up to chance. they're looking through everyone's belongings, their bags. they're making sure people aren't bringing in big backpacks, duffle bags, lawn chairs, picnic blankets. you can't even bring an umbrella and that's tricky because we expect rain to start here in a few hours, but they're doing all of this in an effort to keep new yorkers safe. there are domestic concerns, of urse, the protests we have seen around the city and country over the last year, but then the attack we saw at a holiday market just days ago in europe has officials from the federal down to the local level concerned about the possibility that a lone actor could try something tonight. so that'swhy they're going to be making sure that there is a large presence here on the ground, in the sky, and even out on the water tonight, kate. >> all makes sense. just changing subject, it sounds like tlc behind you, antonia. >> reporter: that's right. >> okay. antonia hylton, looking forward

to tonight. thank you. let's talk weather with nbc news meteorologist michelle grossman. michelle, we thought it might rain in new york. i don't know what is happening out west. give us the spiel. >> hi there, kate. out west we are looking good actually. if you look at the snapshot of the whole country, at least during the day it is looking good. the great lakes into the northeast is where we are looking at rain. the overall map for today, we are not seeing blockbuster storms, we are not seeing major slowdowns in terms of the weather system. that's good news. rain and know in portions of the great lakes. looking at satellite and radar, you can see a couple of things happening. we have snow on the northern side where the cold side is. we are seeing snow right now through the midwest, the great lakes. you notice some red, oranges and yellows, that is heavy rain falling. unfortunately we could see heavy rain at times into the northeast, into new york city, although i think by the ball drop we will be seeing that taper off to showers. and then on the southern side, the warm side, we are seeing

>> reporter: today u.s. investigators at the scene of one of south korea's worst air disasters. the country in mourning. grieving families refusing to leave the international airport, desperate for answers on why their loved ones are gone. just days ago this jeju air flight, a boeing 737-800 skidded down a runway and erupted into flames as it collided with a wall, killing 179 passengers and crew. two flight attendants at the back of the plane the only survivors. one reportedly blacking out, asking doctors, what happened and why am i here. now there are new reportof a second jeju aircraft, another boeing 737-800 turning back after takeoff on monday due to reports of an issue with the landing gear. authorities promising an investigation into the aircraft model with more than 100 operating in the country. the airport, now filled with emergency tents, families waiting for the return of their loved ones' remains. people do not want to leave

their family members. this is part of the agonizing identification process that could take the next few days, weeks, even months. we spoke to lee who lost his aunt and uncle in the crash. [ speaking in a global language ] >> reporter: he thinks the government should be working faster to identify bodies and provide families with more information. officials say only five victims are yet to be officially identified. experts are looking to the plane's black boxes for answers. they will be transferred to a testing center friday and will be checked to see if analysis will be possible. until then, for many families the agonizing wait will continue. meanwhile, that jeju air ceo taking full responsibility at a news conference, announcing financial packages and promising those to the families of the victims. back to you after a contentious eight-year-long legal battle, angelina jolie and brad pitt have reached a divorce settlement. the former hollywood power couple, once simply known as

brangelina, had been together for roughly a decade before tying the knot in 2014. pitt and jolie split up two years later, setting off disputes between the two through their lawyers. several court filings. joining me now is nbc news entertainment correspondent chloe melas. what took so long for this to be finalized? >> that's the million dollars question. a lot of people think it is because they had so much money and property between the two of them, but really it came down to the children, the six children that they share together and the dispute over custody. all of their children are over the age of 18 minus their twins, knox and vivienne, who are 16 years old. at one point they had a private judge that granted them 50/50 custody and then that decision was eventually turned over by the california appellate court. that is really what has dragged this all out. we don't know the details of the settlement, but i do want to read you a little bit about what angelina jolie said in her statement to nbc news. more than eight years ago angelina filed for divorce from mr. pitt.

she and the children left all of the properties they had shared with mr. pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. frankly, angelina is exhausted but she is relieved this one part is over, and brad pitt's team declined to comment on this. >> i want to mention i interviewed angelina jolie two years ago about her work advocating for children in court settings, in proceedings. she said at one points it was personal to her. she acknowledged she has personal experience with the family court system. she called it broken in our interview. we don't know the details as you just said, but it has been a complicated legal battle. more than we know, right? >> i mean, look, angelina jolie filed for divorce from brad pitt after this alleged physical altercation that took place on a transatlantic private plane where brad pitt, he has acknowledged an incident happened, he sought help and he is apologetic. he allegedly choked one of their six children. we don't know which one, we don't know the details. no charges were ever pressed

this is the fast forward on nbc news daily. i'm audrey asistio and we begin with a two alarm fire that gutted a restaurant in gilroy. started just after 730 this morning at los juniors mariscos on first street. gilroy fire says the fire caused significant damage inside that restaurant. no one was hurt. gilroy police closed the roads at hanna street and first street, but those roads are now back open. firefighters are still investigating the cause, but say it is suspicious because the back door was found open and the store was expected to be closed today. a warning from authorities this new year's eve. leleave the fireworks to the professionals. fortunately, the wildfire danger is low, but the risk of getting hurt by an illegal firework is always high. nbc bay area's bob redell is in the east bay with more on the danger. the recent rains have turned our hills green like the ones behind me here in livermore, which means our local fire departments aren't as concerned about illegal fireworks causing a brush fire

tonight like they would be if, let's say this was the 4th of july when it's much more hot out. but they are worried about people getting hurt, whether that be blowing off a finger, getting burned, or something much worse happening just this past october, for example, in the south bay. the family of a 13 year old girl. they reminded us just how dangerous sparklers can be. that teen was badly burned during a diwali celebration when a spark fell on her skirt, scorched her legs and led to an intense nine week recovery in the burn unit at valley med during the last 4th of july. in 2024. we spoke with a man who, along with his wife, they were both badly burned in san jose when a tower holding illegal mortars tipped over and fired at them. this morning we spoke with a captain with the contra costa county fire protection district who has this warning. leave the fireworks to professionals. it only takes a split second for your life to change, with a mini explosion going off either in your hand or in your face, or next to someone

you love. con fire says they are fully staffed. in anticipation of tonight, the richmond police department. they also tell us that they will have extra officers deployed this new year's eve, especially given what appears to be an increase in illegal fireworks in that city. richmond city council member cesar zepeda, who tells us he plans to ask the council to review and possibly strengthen the city fireworks ordinance in the new year. this after he, too, has been shocked at the escalation of the number of fireworks throughout the year here in livermore. bob redell, nbc bay area news. bob, thank you. and the chp has a message of its own for everyone ringing in the new year tonight. they are reminding everyone to celebrate responsibly by taking a taxi, uber or finding a designated driver. chp is enforcing what they call the holiday. maximum enforcement starts at 8:00 tonight. it will run through midnight wednesday. more officers will patrol the highways to crack down on those driving under the influence. meanwhile, san jose police have

made an arrest after a man crashed into christmas in the park. this happened sunday evening. witnesses say police were attempting to make a traffic stop. the driver, they say, tried to get away driving into the valley area of a hotel across from christmas in the park. police say the suspect then started driving the wrong way on market street, entering the holiday display and crashing near the center. thankfully, no one was hurt. the clouds are sticking around in san francisco today, but the sun will be out in san jose. here's cinthia pimentel with more on what to expect. clear and cold for the first part of our day in san francisco, but into the afternoon, we should see some sunshine in there through the city, but the clouds returning right around dinner time, and the time people are heading out for their plans. at around nine 10:00 this evening. maybe a bit of a break, though, for the start of that fireworks show. we'll continue to track that as the evening goes on. your plans? maybe head up to san rafael if you want to avoid the crowds. we are looking at the clouds also

rolling in, but the temperatures becoming cooler there much quicker in the 40s. san jose and the south bay also in store for a stunning day with those highs in the low 60s. we'll see the temperatures coming down into the 40s overnight. now there's a chance of rain in that 7-day forecast. i'll be back to show you that in about 30 minutes. all right. cynthia. sounds good. thank you. a hiker who fell ill while in a remote area of the los padres national forest near big sur, is now safe. the monterey county sheriff's search and rescue team was dispatched over the weekend. they got a call that a 20 year old hiker was sick and couldn't make the seven mile hike back out. rescue teams at one point became stranded, unable to cross a river. a helicopter was deployed, but they weren't able to hoist the patient because of the weather. after 16 hours in difficult conditions, that crew got the hiker out and to a hospital. that does it for this edition of the fast forward. edition of the fast forward. i'll be back in 30 the thompsonr looks sharp, right? did we need to wave her down to tell her that? no. no.

bottom of the hour. now, here are some of the stories making headlines on "nbc news daily." . an investigation is underway after a near collision at the los angeles international airport on friday. >> stop, stop, stop. >> that was an air traffic controller frantically saying stop, stop, stop to that private jet on the lower right in your screen, trying to crs a runway at the same time that delta flight was taking off. the private plane, operated by

key lime air, was carrying a college basketball team at the time. it stopped short of the edge of the runway before resuming its taxi to a gate a few moments later. delta said there were no problems for the delta plane. six former florida state university men's basketball players filed a lawsuit yesterday against coach leonard hamilton over alleged failed payments. in the lawsuit they allege that hamilton promised them $250,000 each in name, image and likeness compensation. hamilton allegedly told them the money would come from his, quote, business partners. hamilton, who has been fsu's head coach since 2022, has not commented on the lawsuit. the university says it is unaware of any lfilled financial obligations to the athletes. a south korean court has issued an arrest warrant for the

country's impeached president, yoon suk-yeol. the western district court issued the warrant after the president failed to show up for questioning despite multiple summons. he is facing charges related to his declaration of martial law earlier this month and whether his actions amounted to a rebellion. if convicted of leading a rebellion, he could face life imprisonment, even the death sentence. yoon's legal team said they fan to file an injunction to suspend the arrest warrant, calling it illegal and invalid. the u.s. treasury department says a state-sponsored chinese hacking operation was able to access its employees' desktop computers. according to a treasury department letter seen by nbc news, hackers were able to access unclassified documents after gaining entry through a third party cybersecurity provider. china is denying that they are behind this attack. joining me with more, nbc business correspondent brian cheung. brian, i know we have a bit more information coming in from some of our colleagues.

how did these hackers access the treasury department and do we know what they were looking for? >> the treasury department described it as a major incident and my colleague, dan de luce, is reporting that the u.s. intelligence committee is describes it as the most active cyber threat to government cyber infrastructure networks. more details on what happened. they have a third party vendor known as beyond trust they use for tech support at the u.s. treasury. apparently it was through the third-party actor that the chinese state-sponsored hacker was able to get the keys to the u.s. treasury desktop and laptops. the treasury says as of now there's no reason to think they have continued access because they're no longer using the beyond trust service, but, again, it is setting off alarm bells with the u.s. government the target of another chinese hack. >> from my reed of dan de luce's

department it sounds like they may be trying to go through treasury or get to contractors that work with the u.s. government. did i read that right? >> or vice versa which was the case here at the u.s. treasury, where they targeted the third party vendor and got to the u.s. government levels. >> china denies responsibility for it but it is not the only time it has happened, even in the last month, right? >> with regard to the u.s. treasury, the chinese ministry saying overnight they oppose all forms of hacking and describe it as groundless accusations. but there were at&t and verizon where they were able to hack high-profile officials. the fbi sending warning after a string of burglaries. the fbi memo says it is the m.o. of organized crime out of south america but it is one theory law enforcement is chasing down. the memo urges athletes to limit

social media posts showing off high-value personal items. at least nine sports stars have been targeted since september, including travis kelce, patrick mahomes, luka doncic. nbc news justice correspondent ken dilanian is with us. good to see you. happy new year. what else is in the fbi memo that went out? is it standard practice for the fbi to warn drups? >> happy new year, kate. yeah, the fbi sent out what is called the liaison information report. it is a way they warn the private sector about specific criminal threats. those are actually pretty common, we just don't always hear about them as we are in the high-profile case. this report said that these athlete homes have been targeted because of a perception that they may have high-end goods like designer handbags, jewelry, watches and cash. as you mentioned, it urges athletes not to post about their expensive belongings on social media. the fbi are reporting at least nine professional athletes had their homes burglarized, kate. >> in the memo the fib

identified organized south american theft groups as a potential source. how might that be happening? >> they're quite clever. officials say the thieves are coming into the country as tourists or on business visas and often leaving after the burglaries. the memo said the criminal gangs bypass or jam alarm systems and cover cameras to mask their identity. they've been tough to catch, kate. >> not just athletes in the news recently. we have see high-profile thefts in 2024. actor keanu reeves had a very expensive watch that turned up in chile. is the fbi worried about all kinds, not just thletes? >> they're concerned about all high-profile individuals. they say not to post on social media and don't broadcast you won't be home at a particular time, and that goes for anybody

because right now people are trolling social media, looking for empty homes with things of value. some of these groups are organized and efficient, kate. >> it is amazing, posts on social media really can help the bad guys. ken dilanian, thank you. major developments today in the investigation into the death of one direction star liam payne. argentinian authorities have now charged five people in connection with the singer's fatal fall from a hotel balcony in october. nbc news entertainment correspondent chloe melas has the details. >> reporter: more than two months after liam payne's fatal fall from his hotel balcony in buenos aires, officials in argentina announcing five people hahave now been charged in connection with the young singer's death. according to local prosecutors, the hotel's manager, its head of reception as well as payne's friend have all been charged with manslaughter and are accused of being negligent in regards to his death. while another hotel employee and a waiter have been charged with supplying cocaine to the 31 year

old during his stay in october. authorities say payne was clearly unable to care for himself and that just minutes before his death hotel lobby surveillance cameras show him being dragged up to his room by three individuals. two subsequent 911 calls were then made by hotel staff according to police. white." they have four daughters. their youngest daughter, ori, whose name means my light, is now 10 months old. gadot says going into that emergency surgery ori was the lightweighting for her at the end of the tunnel. >> hallie jackson reporting there. let's bring in nbc medical contributor dr. natalie azar. she joins me. natalie, she says she wanteto post this to get people talking. let's talk about, how rare is this kind of blood clot? who is most at risk? >> yeah, that's right, kate. so cvt or cerebral veinous thrombosis is a rare type of stroke overall, making up 0.5 to 3% of all strokes. it is estimated that about 12 in 100,000 deliveries are associated with this complication. so, again, definitely not common, but if it happens to you obviously quite significant.

there are known risk factors, and particularly relevant to this, kate, is that one of the biggest risk factors is, in fact, pregnancy and particularly the postpartum period around four to six weeks after pregnancy as well as oral contraceptives, obesity can contribute to the risk. and then, of course, underlying medical conditions which i know sounds a little bit, you know, sort of arbitrary, but certainly things like genetics, clotting disorders, and underlying infections, things like that can increase the risk for something like this happening. >> yeah. so when should you see a doctor? what kind of symptoms to look for? >> yeah, so this is where it gets a little bit, you know, funny to report on this because the most common symptom is a headache, but headaches are very common and they're extraordinarily common in pregnancy, especially in first trimester, sinus headaches,

tension aches all of those things are common. if you have a severe headache or changing headache that's something you want to bring to your provider's attention. in all likelihood it will be something benign and easily treatable, but if there are, you know, concerns about this, this is something that definitely your provider wiwill want to, y know, look at further. >> and just really quickly. if you have had a cvt can you then get pregnant again? >> yeah, so the good news is that it is not what we call a contraindication or absolute contraindication to having another pregnancy. every case is different, and certainly if your cvt was associated with a previously unknown clotting disorder, you are going to end up being on a blood thinner and you will need to be on a blood thinner for subsequent pregnancy. again, it is not something that would preclude someone from having another baby, but it is definitely something that they would be monitoring for throughout the pregnancy certainly. az dr. natalie
