victims and survivors ahead, we hear from victims families who are still coming to terms with the tragic loss following the deadly new year's eve attack in new orleans. also, sounds of explosions rocked an east bay neighborhood. the close call after a gas station goes up in flames. this is today in the bay. well, good morning everyone. happy friday to you. i'm scott mcgrew. i'm in for marcus today, and i'm laura garcia. let's start out with a look at the forecast. cynthia is in for kari as she's been for most of this week. good to see you. good to see you. we are marking it today. our first rain of 2025 already up towards the northern coast. let's zoom it on in a little bit closer to and stop that time. see where it's raining in the bay area right now? mainly out towards the coast of marin county. some sprinkles up towards petaluma and santa rosa. notice that the rest of us are staying cloudy. a little bit of that shower line approaching the half moon bay coast and into san francisco. so

just be careful with maybe some slick roads as you make your way out the door. this morning. up there in the north bay. i see it staying there until we go into about maybe 6 or 7:00, sweeping into the east bay, the peninsula and the south bay as we go through mid morning and then really starting to clear on out of here as we go on into lunch. so it's not going to rain all day and the weekend is not ruined. it looks fabulous. i'll show you the full forecast in a few minutes. back to you. looking forward to it. well, new year, new congress. busy january ahead. house republicans have to elect a speaker. the man who currently holds that position, mike johnson, may have to fight to hold on to that position later today. today in the bay's chris pallone joins us live from washington. kris speakership battle comes as washington prepares for a number of high security events. yeah, it's going to be a crazy month here. the month of january in washington. scott, good morning to you. the current house speaker, mike johnson, is expressing confidence that at the end of today, he will still be the house speaker, but his

am not voting for mike johnson. but johnson has one key backer to get a successful vote. he's a good man. he's a very. he's a wonderful person, and that's what you need. the contentious transition is playing out as washington braces for several high profile events that could strain security efforts, including the january 6th vote certification, the funeral for former president jimmy carter, and the inauguration of donald trump. and the house does have a few days to get a speaker elected. but if one is not in place by monday, that would delay the certification of donald trump's election victory. it could throw the whole timeline of the transfer of power into chaos. scott. well, we don't want that. all right, chris, thank you much. 504 right now, the investigation continues in new orleans after the deadly new year's day terror attack in the french quarter. the man who investigators say plowed into the crowd with a truck was an army veteran employed by deloitte. the attack killed 14

outside, waiting for the sun's arrival over san jose. and really, quite frankly, the bay area today. cinthia pimentel is in for kerry and we're going to get a little rain today. we sure are. we are starting off cloudy, though, down here in the south bay for the next couple of hours getting to that sunrise. then we'll notice more of those rain clouds coming in and the rain arriving around the mid morning hours. notice though, that we start to get a little bit heavier if you have any lunchtime plans right there 11:00 and into noon. but then after that we should go into clearing mode into the rest of the afternoon. it will feel a little bit chilly though, compared to yesterday. we're going to come back down into those upper 50s. so like i mentioned at the top of the hour, we do have some rain, but it's not going to rain all day and the weekend also looks great. the other thing that we have to look about is of course the sierra snow. for people heading up there. we will get some snow at lake level and even more right at the peak. so that's something that we'll have to watch as the day goes on. so i'll give you that full rundown of the outlook hour by hour, of course, and we'll take it into

5:18 am
under that cloud cover and that will soon change as we track this for you hour by hour. i see it pushing on into the east bay, the peninsula, right around the morning commute 8:00 9:00. as i mentioned, it could get heavy at times as we see those spots of yellow in the east bay pushing on through down into the south bay, we should see a rainy lunchtime hour, but it could be light. most of the models are just hinting at some light rain pushing through with this band and into the evening times. we do get some peeks of sunshine, just some of those post-frontal showers that could pop up at times up there in the north bay, but that will really be about it for our first rain of the season. how much are we talking about? we're going to keep those higher totals up there towards the north bay, maybe squeeze out a half an inch from santa rosa over on into guerneville. the rest of us a quarter of an inch, maybe right there through oakland, san francisco, way less down here into the south bay with that rain shadowing effect. of course, the other thing with all of this energy coming in is the chance of seeing those dangerous waves once again today, through about sunday, those breakers about 18 to 25ft.
5:19 am
so just be careful of that as we do see the clearing into the weekend and you want to get out there. just keep that safe distance from the coast. now from the coast up into the higher peaks. i mentioned that we are looking at the winter mode being activated there in through the sierra. lower totals at lake level, but still could look at some dangerous and gusty conditions through 50 and 80. higher totals up there in the peaks. kingvale. we're looking at almost a foot of some fresh powder, as we did get that update in the snowpack yesterday, and we'll talk about that throughout the morning. of course, the next couple of days through san francisco and the peninsula. watch out for that rain and the gusty winds at times as the rain pushes on through through the weekend. we could be waking up with that morning fog for tomorrow. i'll be here to tell you about that, of course. and then into next week we go into drying mode and maybe even seeing some numbers starting to bump up. notice as we go on into sunday, monday, and even the rest of the week. everybody back to school and back to work will be nice to get into that sunshine and not have

robert and latasha holmes put everything they had into buying the home back in 2019. last month, when wind and rain pounded the region, one of the family's three daughters spotted a large portion of the ceiling starting to sag. then the roof, as you saw there, came crashing down. family and church members have pitched in to help patch the roof, but the homes are now looking at thousands of dollars in repairs, and they say their insurance company has denied their claim. they're appealing but are looking for the community's help in the meantime. we're at the beginning of winter and we want to be able to survive this thing, and we're just praying that no more damage happens to our home. we're going to get through this no matter what. we're going to be okay. the holmes family sayhey got one estimate, that it will cost $8,000 to fix the damage to their roof and ceiling. okay, so normally a cat in a tree doesn't make news headlines, but a cat

in vacaville brought such concern to a community after being stuck in a tree for nearly a week. so the neighbors came to the rescue in a big way to get that cat down. today in the bay's thom jensen has that story. the cat was at least 35ft up from the tree after being chased there by a neighbor's dog since last saturday afternoon. early afternoon. just crying for help. meowing. yeah, it's been up there. just trapped. the cat that rhonda named whitey is one of about a dozen or so feral cats living in this vacaville apartment complex. whitey had recently been mauled by a dog and just started to recover before he went up the tall tree, and then began crying day and night for five days. my son was the first one over here with a 20 foot ladder, and we couldn't quite reach it. it was ten more feet above him. local firefighters couldn't get up that high because their ladder truck was down, so tenants hired this tree trimmer to give it a try to get up there and get him. but when he finally reached the cat in one tree, it leapt to
5:26 am
another tree. and he gave up because it was too dangerous. oh yes. finally, after seeing the saga unfold on facebook and hundreds of people commenting over the past five days, a local man with a cherry picker truck volunteered his services and used a net and got him in the net and got him down. whitey was still in the net when he was placed in an animal crate and taken to a nearby animal hospital, where he's expected to recover from his wounds. rhonda said she really appreciates all the help that everybody gave getting this cat out of the trees here. and she said, when whitey makes a full recovery, she hopes he's able to return here and live at the complex where she's grown quite fond of him. thom jensen today in the bay may be on the ground in her apartment, right? well, coming up next, top stories that we're following for you today, including the reopening of the santa cruz wharf. the reason the city thinks it's safe to reopen so soon after the structure collapsed. i'm ginger conejero

san francisco is looking to turn the page in 2025 when it comes to traffic deaths. after the recording, one of the deadliest years in decades. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning. and ginger, the number of deaths shocking given the city's goal of zero traffic fatalities. that's right. good morning to you, laura. the chronicle says that the city closed out the year with 41 traffic deaths. now, as you mentioned, the city's goal and its program, vision zero. s.f. wants to eliminate all traffic deaths. that goal marked ten years in 2024. and unfortunately, those numbers are going in the wrong direction. now, the city closed out the year with several traffic collisions or traffic crashes that were fatal. it ended the year with a deadly car crash on crossover drive in golden gate park. that street connects park presidio and 19th avenue here i the city. it's a pretty major thoroughfare. police say it was a single car crash and the car

caught fire. one person died from that crash, but it was a fatal car crash that killed a family of four in san francisco's west portal neighborhood back in march. that really marked 2020 for mary fong. lieu faces felony vehicular manslaughter charges in connection with that fatal crash at a bus stop at ulloa street and lennox way. that crash killed a family of four back in march. a father, a mother, a two year old boy and an infant all died as a result. lyles next court date is set for later this month. now, california is looking to change the direction of traffic fatalities. ab 645 recognizes that speed is a major factor in traffic collisions that result in injuries and fatalities. as such, this bill legalizes surveillance cameras to help catch speeding drivers. a five year pilot program will install cameras in six cities, including san francisco. the pilot program
5:34 am
also includes san jose and oakland, and this is authorized to run until january 1st of 2032. hopefully, laura, there will be a much needed progress this time in the right direction with more tools. we're live in san francisco. ginger conejero saab today in the bay. most definitely. thank you ginger. 533 this morning, the fbi continuing to investigate the attack on bourbon street in new orleans. at least 15 people are dead. dozens others hurt. live. look at bourbon street, which is now back open. this comes as tens of thousands descended on the superdome to witness college football's sugar bowl yesterday. all of this happening under the shadow of a massive police presence. the suspect in the attack has been identified as 42 year old shamsuddin jabbar from texas, according to the fbi. jabbar also placed two explosive devices in coolers near the scene of the attack. he died after crashing into a crane and getting into a shootout with

5:37 am
bob, this morning's hearing comes after a court recently overturned dana stubblefield's rape conviction. you are correct. good morning to you, lawrence scott. later this morning at 9:00, a judge here at santa clara county superior court behind me will hold this hearing to release. that's where the lawyer for dana stubblefield will petition the judge to try to get the judge to agree to release his client from prison, as you mentioned. last week, a california appellate court overturned the 2020 rape conviction of stubblefield. he used to be a defensive tackle for the san francisco 49ers and the then oakland raiders in july of 2020. dana stubblefield was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after being convicted of raping a woman who was interviewing for a babysitting job at his morgan hill home. a california appellate court determined that stubblefield did not get a fair trial, and prosecutors violated the 2020 racial justice act by making racially biased comments about
5:38 am
him being black. the woman claimed he used a gun, but police never searched the house for that gun. prosecutors say the home wasn't searched, partly because stubblefield was a famous black man on trial during the george floyd protests. here was stubblefield's attorney last week after the court overturned his client's conviction. was it long overdue? it was. are we thankful? yes. or did we expect it? we absolutely expected this case to be overturned. the court did not say mr. stubblefield was innocent, only that he did not get a fair trial due to the violation of the racial justice act. stubblefield's attorneys say they are also going to try to get the case against their client completely dismissed. again, the hearing to release stubblefield takes place here at the hall of justice behind me in san jose at 9:00 this morning. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell. today in the bay. interesting. thanks, bob. the santa cruz wharf will partially reopen tomorrow. far earlier
5:39 am
than originally thought. this comes after a section collapsed into the ocean last week during strong storms. 17 businesses have been closed since then. now, originally, the city said it could take weeks, if not months to partially reopen the wharf, but city leaders announced they plan to reopen it tomorrow. the portion of the wharf affected by the collapse will remain closed. let's get a check of the waves and the. and look. oh, we got a beach behind you. got the midway. i wish it was this sunny. this is just our background image for the boardwalk. there we are looking at showers there through santa cruz for today. clearing through the weekend. so just the story for today. it could be dangerous around 17. we know how it gets when a little water comes through, so be careful with that. and even though the weekend looks great, i told you a little a couple minutes ago that we do have this high surf advisory. even those dangerous beach conditions out there towards santa cruz, monterey through the weekend. we'll see how the waves act up as we go on into saturday and sunday and
5:40 am
update that as necessary. but already some ten foot waves up there towards bodega a bay. it could just be dangerous. so just keep away from the coast for a little while up into the sierra. i would say keep away today as we see those snow showers coming in and those gusty winds through the weekend, it's clearing up, but just bring the chains just in case it gets too slippery for you up there and practice putting them on. we cannot say that enough. some people have a hard time. we go on and talk about what's going on here around the bay. sharks game looks to be a little earlier. i don't think i've ever seen this one. it starts at three, but the outlook looks great. we see some mix of sun and clouds there. a little bit breezy through san jose in the upper 50s out there towards chase center. it's also a saturday game. we go on a little bit later into that one and see those temperatures coming down into the low 50s out there in the city, so go sports throughout the state. we are looking at a dry day for our forecast tomorrow, saturday. maybe you're finally driving home after that long holiday

were named to play the pro bowl. that's the nfl's version of the all star game. the team also preparing for the final week of the nfl regul season, where josh dobbs will make his first start for the red and gold. here's today in the bay's anthony flores, with the 49ers staying home for the playoffs, many consider the regular season finale a meaningless game. it's not for several players on this roster, including josh dobbs, who's making his first start at quarterback. dobbs is auditioning for a job next season, either with the 49ers or another team in the nfl. this is the most meaningful week of practice for josh dobbs. in a 49ers uniform. the veteran quarterback will start his 15th nfl game, but his first in red and gold. i'm just excited for the opportunity to get on the field and play. it's obviously fun to be a part of a great room and be supportive of brock throughout the season, but to get a chance to get your number called and go out there and play and show what you can do is something that you never take for granted in this league.
5:50 am
dobbs has been on six teams since being drafted by the pittsburgh steelers in the fourth round in 2017. sunday will be a reunion in arizona. the 29 year old started eight games for the cardinals last season before being traded to minnesota. joshua dobbs coming in to play quarterback in replacing brock purdy, who went down with an elbow injury monday night against the lions. dobbs showed off his rocket arm and his jets by running for a late gameme touchdown. what else woud you expect from a guy who has an aerospace engineering degree from tennessee and is working on his private pilot's license? he's a dynamic player, you know, obviously a winner, proven winner. being able to go into different, different organizations and win there on short notice. so, you know, i'm excited for him and his opportunity. warner is expected to play sunday against the cardinals. he was selected to the pro bowl along with defensive lineman nick bosa, tight end george kittle and fullback kyle juszczyk. brock purdy was named an alternate. i'm anthony flores for today in

the bay. all right. well speaking of trending this morning christian juszczyk making a touchdown in the fashion world. she's kicking off her new clothing brand. so the brand is called off season. she says she's redefining fan apparel while bringing a fresh vision to the world of sports inspired fashion, merging the energy of game day with unparalleled quality and design. the first collection is in partnership with the nfl and features limited edition puffer jackets and vests. christian juszczyk gained notoriety with her designs of her husband's 49ers jerseys. of course, her husband kyle. she also made jackets for many celebrities like taylor swift and simone biles. and it's kind of funny. there hadn't been a new good look of nfl wear for women, so let's go and let's get those parkas ready because we've got our first real look at the sierra snowpack. it is so important because many water agencies rely on the snow melt to fill reservoirs. state water officials held the first survey of the year at the phillips station near south lake tahoe.
5:52 am
gives us a snapshot of how much we might expect to fill our reservoirs when it all melts down. they took six samples and combined the numbers with 260 other sites around the state, and so far we're about 108%. but it is still early in the season as of right now. feeling okay. but if we don't get more storms, we'll need a progression of monthly storms to keep going because otherwise we will end up maybe similar under average by the end of the year. okay, well, because of those december storms and rainfall in the past two years, we're in good shape in the south bay valley, water says reservoirs of 91% of average, about half the water we use in the south bay comes from outside the county. so the snowpack is really essential for our supply. and no rain here means snow in the sierra. we're going to have a little we bring me a little window of opportunity to head to tahoe this weekend. what do you think? i think maybe right now. okay. and not until later on in the evening. early tomorrow is

going to be coming down. yeah. is it going to be snowing up there, let's say, around. and even, you know, as you go up into the mountains, say around like, you know, your approach on 80 or 50, there is a winter storm warning. then it turns into an advisory at lake level. so really it's the peaks that are going to be looking a little dangerous as the morning goes on. so everybody say goodbye to laura. she has to go right now. got to go right now. and we see our snow pack. yes, it's looking okay. we look great for the central part and the northern part. it's really down into the southern part, which is a little bit concerning. just as all of those storms have trended towards the northern part of the state, la and down into southern california, they are really crossing their fingers and doing the rain dance for more moisture. and i'll tell you why in a couple of seconds why this could be looking a little bit concerning as we go on into next week. let's bring it back here. we can barely see the bay bridge. it is a misty morning that rain is starting to push on
5:54 am
through into the heart of the bay. we see it wet right t there through the bay bridge, parts of san francisco down into san mateo, and that line of rain making its way into the east bay, approaching the 680 corridor and up into the north bay. it's been raining there all morning long, and it will continue at least for the next couple of hours, finally pushing that storm line further east and down into the south bay. as we go on into the mid morning hours, we're going to keep a chance of a norther north, the north bay getting some thunderstorm activity, very light chances, but not non-zero if that makes sense. as we go on and track this line of storms, we see it turning lighter into the north bay. as we go on into the mid-morning and again into our lunchtime hour. the south bay looks wet, but that is about it. we should see some peeks of sunshine right around sunset, finally giving us a little bit of a breather and jumpstarting our weekend. our temperatures are going to be cold, much colder than where we were yesterday. it felt mild down here in the south bay in those mid to upper 60s. not today. we're going barely making it out of those upper 50s through san

jose. gilroy similar feel as we go up into the north bay. much cooler up there in lake county. that'll be it for the cold temperatures and the rain for a while. here's why i was mentioning that it could be concerning for that snow pack. notice that the western part of the u.s. is trending above average for those temperatures into next week. we go on and see our neighbors out towards the east and the south. they're preparing for some really cold arctic air that's going to be blowing that way. so maybe your business plans, your trips are out that way. pack your heavier jacket if you do have one in your closet here in the bay area the next couple of days. watch this. inland valleys. yes, we go on and talk about the rain and the cold temperatures for the start of the weekend, but then into next week we bump them up into the mid to upper 60s in some spots well above average, where we should be in the low 60s in our inland valleys for this time of year. in the peninsula and san francisco. a rainy start to our first weekend, but then drying out as we go on into the thick of it. let's go on and check what's

going on on the roads. we continue to talk about this problem on bart. no service from the coliseum to the oakland airport. there is some maintenance issues that they have to work out, but ac transit is providing those busses. we'll see how long it takes for this to clear up. remember wet weather bart runs slower across the grid. back to you. well, happening now, researchers at the university of pittsburgh have found a new way to help kids with asthma. they've created a way to test for different types of asthma using nasal nasal swabs. but the tests still need fda approval and more studies. according to the national institutes of health, asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease, affecting approximately 1 in 10 children. honoring the lives lost in new orleans still ahead on today in the bay, we hear from grieving families following the terror attack that took place on new year's eve in new orleans. nbc bay area streams 24/7. you can watch us whenever you'd like on roku or other streaming platforms. a lot more news ahead on this friday
