it comes to snow and ice. travel is going to be difficult you see how many are under winter alerts. this system hasn't gotten going yet. it will happen later today. kansas city to louisville, this winter storm warning in effect. these will likely stay through the next couple days in these spots. you see snow across the rockies. not all that impressive. much of the heavy know works across the rockies. denver will see some of that. you see the wintry mess working across the central plains. that happens by this evening. we see this system get going by tomorrow. this means we have a threat of snow, ice and especially along i-70 with severe thunderstorms across the south and warmer section of the system. it continues working east. this is when the mid-atlantic gets in on the action. we see potential for gnificant icing and power out ages across virginia.

we will see a foot. kansas city with 6 toinches. cincinnati, 6 to 10 inches. this stretches to washington, d.c. with 3 or 4 4 inches of sn by the time we get through monday. the icing is where travel will be difficult on the roadways. you see up to .25 icing. southern illinois and southern missouri we have to watch for that. >> angie, thank you. see you in a little bit. we turn to the twist in the hush money trial of president-elect trump. the judge overseeing the case plans to sentence trump next week. nbc's vaughn hillyard is near mar-a-lago estate in west palm peach. beach. vaughn, the judge ruled out the jail time. what does this mean? >> reporter: this means president trump will face no jail time. last may, he was found guilty

for falsifying business records as part of the hush money payment to stormy daniels to influence the 2016 election. judge merchan writing he will move forward with the sentencing of the president-elect before inauguration day, but indicated he does not intend to sentence him to jail time. now he did indicate that an option would be to move that sentencing to 2029, but he called it a less desirable option for obvious reasons. now, as to exactly what the sentencing could be and the consequences could be, well, judge merchan indicated he does not intend to give the president-elect any substantive consequence. writing in that ruling, quote, a sentence of an unconditional discharge appears to be the most viable solution to ensure finality and allow the defendant to pursue his appellant options. that dischaharge would include

probation or fine. judge merchan did require trump to appear for the sentencing. guys. >> all of that in ten days before his inauguration. vaughn, to be clear, the president-elect still is able to appeal this verdict, right? >> reporter: right. his legal team has indicated that it intends to fight this as far as they can and the president-elect writing in a statement on social media last night, in part, this has to stop. it is time to stop so we can come together was one nation. as you noted, peter, five days later, he will be inaugurated in washington, d.c. as a convicted felon. guys. >> vaughn, thank you. also this morning, we are getting a look inside the no ew orleans ttackers home as the law enforcement sees the bomb making material there. bourbon street is back open

after the deadly terror attack as concerns of security in the french quarter are on the rise. we have kathy park with the latest in new orleans. kathy, good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning. bourbon street will forever be scarred by what happened on new year's day. if you take a look, there is a growing memorial honoring the lives lost. as this morning, we are learning new details about the attack and the man behind it. this morning, the french quarter in new orleans fully opened to the public and security heightened as the memorial grows for the victims in the new year's day terror attack. >> senseless. >> reporter: the fbi saying the suspect, 42-year-old, shamsud din jabbar, was 100% inspired by isis with growing questions with when and how the army veteran became radicalized. >> proclaiming support for isis. >> reporter: on friday, the

agents returned to the houston home registered to jabbar and towing way a gray sedan. we had images from inside the home of bomb making materials confirmed by two senior law enforcement officials. investigators say jabbar used a rare compound found in the two ieds. jabbar's younger brother saying he notid no red flags. >> this wasn't the man i knew. this wasn't the father, the son, that i knew. >> reporter: as the investigation presses on, security measures in one of the most famous streets in the world are coming under great are scrutiny. in 2019, an assessment report found the bollard system on bourbon street does not appear to work and recommending fixing the barriers immediately warning the terror attacks used are vehicle ramming and active shooting. >> they should have locked down the area. >> reporter: city officials are defended the security measures as new questions are raised.

or halo. the messaging including the video in the truck continuing until new year's eve when she said he went quiet. she found out about the bombing when she was contacted by the fbi. >> i don't know what drove him to it. i have been rolling it around in my head for two days. >> reporter: livelsberger was never violent toward her, but complained of extreme pain following back surgeries among other issues. >> he would have headaches and he would have memory loss and concentrating. >> reporter: in las vegas, as for a potential motive, the decorated veteran ended with this. >> i need to cleanse my mind of the brothers i lost and relieve myself of the burden of the lives i took. >> reporter: we learned additional context into the life of matthew livelsberger. two u.s. government officials telling nbc news he saw a doctor for depression at least three times between august and december. the d.o.d. not saying if he was

ever officially diagnosed with depression or if he showed any signs of suicide. peter, laura. >> morgan sharing that reporting. morgan, thank you. this morning, congress member mike johnson is house speaker. narrowly winning election on friday after trump made calls. we have julie tsirkin with more from d.c. >> reporter: the gavel back in hand, but already a rough start for the 119th congress after the vote that went on for hours. minutes after members were sworn in on friday, they took their first vote electing a speaker. the first order of business for a new congress. initially, all but three republicans, cast their ballots for johnson, but a tiny majority, those holdouts were enough to sink him. all democrats voted for hakeem

afternoon at 12th street and lake merritt boulevard. but when opd responded, they say it appeared the graffiti had already been removed from the jewish religious symbol. this coming one year after a similar crime, in december of 2023, vandals targeted the lake merritt menorah on the seventh night of hanukkah. the old menorah had been dismantled and thrown into the lake. governor gavin newsom issuing an executive order in hopes of making california healthier. the order requires state agencies to recommend ways to limit harm associated with products like soda, candy and other ultra processed food and drinks. the new plan incentivizes low income people enrolled in the calfresh program to buy fresh foods. newsom's office says the goal is to support affordable and healthy living in an effort to reduce the impact of chronic illness. we're going to turn now to our first weekend forecast of

2025. hey, cynthia. and it seemed like it was going to start out rocky with the rain yesterday. but now it's clearing out and the weekend should look much better. the thing for today, though, is that we're watching the patchy fog that's coming back, all that evaporation taking place so we can barely see a thing as we make it up into novato. santa rosa. less than a mile there. so if you do have to travel anywhere this morning, be careful with that. we see some patchy fog starting to form around the tri-valley. we'll watch that and down into morgan hill. also that quarter mile visibility. and it extends and gets worse into the central valley. the numbers are also cold. so once we have that moisture coming in yesterday, the clouds, the absence mostly of it today is bringing down those numbers once again into the 30s. 39 santa rosa, 37 calistoga. and we continue with those low 40s out there in livermore. brentwood at 42. 39 in boulder creek and 40 degrees right now in morgan hill. and the day will really progress like this will stay cool mostly in the upper 50s in our inland valleys with those clouds lingering around. the forecast looks better for tomorrow and

files. the d.a.'s decision is important, but ultimately be up to the judge if the brothers should be re-sentenced or released. peter. >> liz, thank you very much. angie is back with the look at the winter weather in the forecast. angie. >> winter weather for sure. we talked about the snow and ice on the cold side of the system. we have a warmer side of the system to spark the potential for strong thunderstorms as we get through the day on sunday. notice what happens. we see most of the stretched across the gulf coast into portions of the tennessee valley. that line of thunderstorms just ahead of that cold front leaves us with the potential for 7 million people tomorrow afternoon and evening, centered across the region, with the strong winds. that's the biggest threat up to 60 miles per hour or higher. a couple of tornadoes is possible. hail threat is low. this is something we will watch and localized flooding across

we are back on your saturday morning with your health. this morning, we are looking into the big announcement on friday from the u.s. surgeon general about the link between alcohol and cancer. >> vivek murthy says he wants to see warning labels on all bottles and cans similar to packs of cigarettes to alert people to the dangers of drinking. >> lot of questions for dr. natalie azar. thank you for being here. break it down. what is the science and where is the jury still out? >> the message for viewers today is we have known for decades that alcohol is linked to cancer. it is what is called a carcinogen. this is what the u.s. surgeon general is trying to indicate to everyone. knowing this, that means alcohol is a modifiable risk factor for cancer. if you are concerned about your cancer riskdecreasing the

morning. thanks for joining us on this saturday, january 4th, i'm kira klapper. one year after a massive menorah was destroyed at lake merritt, another crime investigation is underway. oakland police say officers responded to reports that the new giant menorah had been vandized with graffiti. it happened around one yesterday afternoon at 12th street and lake merritt boulevard. but when pd responded, they say it appeared the graffiti had already been removed from the jewish religious symbol. this coming one year after a similar crime, in december of 2023, vandals targeted the lake merritt menorah on the seventh night of hanukkah. the old menorah had been dismantled and thrown into the lake. governor gavin newsom issuing an executive order in hopes of making california healthier. the order requires state agencies to
