tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  January 5, 2025 7:00am-8:00am PST

7:00 am
morning. it is sunday, january 5th, 7:00. as we take this live look outside from our emeryville camera. wow, the bay almost looking like a mirror. as we
7:01 am
look at the twinkling lights of the bay bridge this morning. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. how's it looking out there? yesterday was, you know, nice to not have some rain, but a little gloomy, a little gloomy. and it continues this morning with some patchy fog hanging around the city. right there. we see it through our sutro tower camera temperatures. not too bad though. in san francisco 48. we cool it down and we see that patchy fog continuing out towards the tri-valley in dublin. that camera completely socked in with that fog, so be careful if you are on the roads. maybe finally heading out after the long holiday weekend. san jose will see that hazy sunshine continuing throughout the day for our sunday. maybe a few more peeks of sunshine. and into this week we will be dry and gusty. we'll talk about those winds where it's going to be most concerning as we go through the days. and of course, i also want to take a moment to talk about what's going to be happening nationally. there could be some big headlines when it comes to a
7:02 am
major winter storm, so we'll talk about it coming up in about 15 minutes. kira all right, cynthia, thanks. we are followining breakg news out of oakland, where police are investigating several early morning burglaries and whether they are connected. around 230 this morning, opd first responded to the extra mile gas station at 17th and castro streets. an employee told police that a group shattered the front door. as you just saw, made their way inside and stole the cash register. the employee was not hurt. then about 30 minutes later, just after 3 a.m, it's believed the same group broke into a safeway in the ridge shopping center on broadway and pleasant valley avenue. employees were inside at the time. they told police the group broke down the door into the office and also stole a checkout register, among other things. no one was hurt. and about an hour later, police responded to this smash and grab at it is what it is on san pablo avenue. after
7:03 am
the thieves attempted multiple times, they successfully rammed the car through the security gate and gss doors and ransacked that smoke shop. at least six people were seen on video. if you have any information, you're asked to call oakland police. now to san francisco, where police are investigating. if neighbors have surveillance camera video they can share. after a driver ran over a person and drove away. it happened last night in the portola district. it typically quiet residential part of the city. today in the bay's alyssa goard reports. after a hit and run crash in san francisco, police are combing through evidence trying to piece together how a pedestrian was killed here between silver and colby avenues. san francisco police are retracing the steps of a pedestrian who was hit and killed by a car just before 530 on saturday. we spoke with one neighbor who believes it all happened very quickly, while she was just circling the block
7:04 am
looking for parking. it must have happened in that time because it was totally clear on the way up and then within, i don't know, less than five minutes. it wasn't. when first responders arrived, they say the suspect had already driven off, leaving the victim on the ground suffering from major injuries. and then later, when i saw the police come, i noticed that they were administering cpr to somebody who was on the side of the road. despite life saving efforts, the pedestrian died at the scene, marking yet another traffic death in san francisco in 2024, san francisco had 41 traffic deaths. one of the deadliest years for the city. in an effort to make things safer this year. sfmta is installing speed cameras at 33 locations and proposing new speed limits at 11 streets. back in the portola neighborhood, police are asking for anyone with information about this crash to call them. alyssa goard. today in the bay and police in san
7:05 am
francisco are also investigating a shooting in the soma district. it happened around 630 last night at the corner of fifth and bryant streets. that's right near the on ramp to eastbound 80 the bay bridge. officers responded to find the shooting victim. paramedics rushed them to the hospital with life threatening injuries. we'll bring you a description of the shooter. police are looking for when we get it. an update now on that breaking news we brought to you yesterday morning. oakland police are now investigating the department's first officer-involved shooting of the year. it started around five yesterday morning on macarthur boulevard near 66th avenue. police say a sergeant confronted a man firing a rifle. oakland police say the man shot at the sergeant but missed, and he took off running. during the chase, the sergeant was forced to shoot at the man who ran into a nearby apartment building, and that led to an hours long standoff and dozens of police vehicles near evergreen cemetery. the suspect
7:06 am
eventually surrendered. it's unclear how badly he was hurt, but we are told he's in the hospital in stable condition. now to our continuing coverage of the santa cruz wharf, officially back open and welcoming visitors less than two weeks after a 150 foot stretch at the end of the wharf collapsed into the ocean during a powerful storm. today in the bay's marianne favro was there for the highly anticipated opening day, when powerful waves sent the end of santa cruz wharf plummeting into the ocean. on december 23rd, the pier was shut down and business owners had no idea when they could reopen their stores. so glad you guys are open. i know, me too. which is why the owner of marini's candies was thrilled the city opened most of the pier saturday. just ecstatic, you know. so happy to be back out here. the doors open, customers coming in, being able to be back
7:07 am
at work and have all of my employees back at work just means the world to me. after conducting a sonar and engineering assessment of the 110 year old wharf, the city deemed it was safe and held a special event to celebrate the reopening. 400 employees work on the wharf. they celebrated too. glad to be back to work. just nice to see the paycheck coming in. people are obviously happy to be out here. aidan says he can now get back to offering rickshaw rides. i'm just happy it's back open. for many, it meant a return to favorite ice cream shops, restaurants and fishing spots, even though some admit they still have lingering concerns about safety. i wonder if i can pick it up. it's surprisingly quick. it's maybe more surprising that it's able to just collapse on that side, and they're more reassured that the rest of this is fine. but you know, they're the experts. we're not international tourists. consider the reopening
7:08 am
perfect timing. very happy that they opened here today. it's our first day and our only chance to come and walk on the pier. the end of the pier remains closed and there is no timeline for if or when repairs will be completed. but most of the wharf that attracts 2 million visitors a year is open once again, providing the backdrop for cherished memories. what a perfect day to come out here to celebrate my wife's birthday! marianne favro today in the bay and happening today. dungeness crab season officially begins after being delayed several times. the commercial season typically opens mid november, but was pushed back nearly two months to protect migrating whales from the big nets. the port of san francisco anticipates crabbers will start selling early this morning. we found one fisher posting on facebook that they'll be selling off boat around 9 a.m. sales on
7:09 am
fisherman's wharf could start as early as eight, though the port says they are expecting a lot of people, so they suggest showing up early to get in line. meanwhile, san francisco's incoming mayor, daniel lurie, will be sworn in on wednesday but is spending this weekend focusing on community service. today, the mayor elect will be at cleanups in the lower nob hill and tenderloin neighborhoods, as well as a cleanup in the mission district. laurie yesterday joined several neighborhood cleanups in different parts of the city. the events were hosted in part by the civic joy fund, which he co-founded. the group organizes weekend trash pickups for volunteers looking to make san francisco safer and cleaner. laurie says his priorities remain the same, and he's looking forward to leading the city by the bay public safety, clean streets, making sure we get people off the streets and into mental health and drug treatment beds, get people the help that they need and they deserve. but we can't let people
7:10 am
suffer on ourtreets any longer. and then making sure that we streamline the bureaucracy. laurie added that he wants to see everyone do their part to reclaim san francisco's mantle of being one of the greatest cities in the world again. laurie is set to be inaugurated on wednesday at civic center plaza. here is a new warning from the chp. scammers are trying to trick you into thinking you have to sign up your child for amber alerts. the agency issues the alerts for children at risk, but some phone scammers recently are posing as alert officials and have been apparently offering to register children for the alerts while asking for confidential information about them and to meet at your home. the chp is the only agency that issues amber alerts, and they don't need you to sign up. they're asking you to call police if you get a call like that. 710 on your sunday morning. we have much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, we take you live
7:11 am
to washington, d.c. for our weekly chat with kristen welker ahd of this week's

of the 119th term of the united states congress. new members took their oath of office, and among them was former san jose mayor sam liccardo, now representing parts of santa clara and san mateo counties, as well as lateefah simon, who will represent much of alameda county. please join me in welcoming kristen welker, moderator of meet the press. hi, kristen. happy new year. great to see you this morning. as has been widely reported, republicans have control of the house and the senate. and this morning, you're speaking with senate democratic leader chuck schumer, as well as senator adam schiff of california. and of course, the congresspeople i just mentioned from here in california are democrats as well. so where do democrats see themselves in the opposition?
7:14 am
hey, kira, happy new year. it's so great to be with you. well, it's a great question. it's one i put actually directly to senator adam schiff. what's his role going to look like in this new congress? he spent so much time conducting oversight when he was in congress of the first trum administration. will we expect to see the same in the second trump administration? he said, look, that's really going to depend on what we see from president elect trump. what are his actions? does he cross any red lines? i asked him if he's going to look backwards. will he be focused on election interference? for example, he said, look, he wants to find areas of bipartisan agreement. he does want to try to legislate to get stuff done in his new role as a senator. at the same time, he was very clear on the legislation that he disagrees with. he's going to try to block republicans. for example, he and both leader schumer were quite clear they are going to oppose extending the trump era tax cuts. they believe those are tax cuts for wealthy americans. so expect that to be a big battle
7:15 am
capitol hill. i think that's going to be a big question. i think the other big question, how do democrats start to rebuild their party? kira. both schumer and schiff talked about the need to put more of a focus on the economy moving forward. we've heard that argument from senator bernie sanders, for example, democratic strategist james carville had that op ed this past week calling for democrats to really redouble their efforts and focus on the economy if they want to be more competitive moving forward. yeah, not only a congress divided, but perhaps a party divided. christian, as always, thanks so much for talking to us this morning. good to see you. and if you missed meet the press this morning, it actually aired before us. it typically airs at eight. don't worry. you can watch kristen welker on our streaming platforms. and again every sunday right here on nbc bay area at 8 a.m. we have premier soccer today, and coming up in about 30 minutes from now, we will talk to nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston for our weekly segment, we'll
7:16 am
take a look at the debate of reproductive freedom and how it's still a top voters minds. all right. pleasanton police are asking for the public's help in finding a woman who is suspected of bank fraud. police say this woman on your screen visited several banks and fraudulently withdrew thousands of dollars. they're asking anyone who could help identify her or who might have any information to contact them. the fraud happened last saturday, december 28th in pleasanton. so if you think you know her, call pleasanton police. hollywood ramping up for its annual party of the year. the golden globes, celebrating the best in both television and film, is tonight. road closures already in effect. security heightened around the beverly hills hilton. comedian nikki glaser will be hosting the show, leading the night in film amelia perez with ten golden globe nominations, including best motion picture and best actress
7:17 am
for a musical or comedy. the brutalist not far behind with seven nominations. and in television, the bear has the most nominations, including best television series and best actor for a musical or comedy. well, tomorrow marks the beginning of a week long farewell for today co-anchor hoda kotb. she will depart the show after friday's broadcast, but leaves behind an indelible legacy. mark barger reports on kotb's impact on today through the eyes of her colleagues. hoda is officially the co-anchor of today. let's give her a round of applause. it's an affection for hoda kotb. people can't get enough of her. that's only grown. oh, yeah, this is a cool crowd. over her seven years on today. go, dawgs! hoda is loved by every single person on our crew in the control room. the producers, every person on the plaza,
7:18 am
everyone. years with dateline prepared hoda to tackle each morning's top stories. is there an ongoing search for others? but away from today's anchor desk. let's go check it out. come on. she's been just as much at home. you got it, girl. what did it feel like today? it's the hoda effect. and there's just nothing in the world like it. and everybody feels it. because the source is genuine. do you feel strong? when i think about hoda, i really do think about her heart. that's who she is. that's what guides her and what makes it difficult. i'm so happy you came to pull her away from fans on the plaza, and sometimes we're like, we got to run inside for our next segment. she's like, i'll be right there. just one more. i mean, she never stops. part of an impact felt in front of and behind the camera, who has always been able to take the work seriously without taking herself too seriously. but some serious tears are in store friday. nobody wants her
7:19 am
to go. nobody wants her to go. it's the end of a unique chapter for today. goodbye, everybody. goodbye. i'm out. but the start of a new one for hoda kotb. we're proud of her and we can't wait to see her fly. mark barger, nbc news. you would think it would be really hard to leave that seat. and craig melvin takes over as new co-anchor, i believe, on monday. all right. a new beginning. my co-anchor, cinthia pimentel is here for a look at our microclimate forecast. hopefully some more sun than we saw yesterday. yeah. today and into next week. definitely. so we'll get the sunshine coming in. but i did want to take a second to talk about what's going on nationally. things are really going to start to ramp up for people through the midwest. and that could have an impact on us here too. and i'll explain why they're dealing with some snow showers from stretching from kansas over on into kentucky. a line of showers pushing on through the south. now, while we have dry weather here that could impact people traveling for business this week, getting our
7:20 am
routines back in place, and maybe even some packages that you're waiting for that come from the east coast. we see that snow showers and the rain just pushing on through, at least for tomorrow and into tuesday, when they could be in for some calmer weather the second half of the week. so we'll keep an eye on that here on today in the bay. as far as us here in the bay area, we are starting the morning with those low 40s. it's a chilly one some places waking up with some fog, but we'll get some filtered sunshine here as we start to warm up, as we go on into our lunchtime hour and into the afternoon. could be a similar situation to that beautiful sunset yesterday. it was gorgeous. those hazy skies continues. upper 50s to some low 60s for the north bay. around the bay. the east bay shoreline there in hayward at 59, and a little bit of a similar feel down here in the south bay, with a high of about 63, in gilroy. now, what's going to happen as we go out and talk about the week here on the west coast? we mentioned that we're going to start to build high pressure gradually, while a system of low
7:21 am
pressure and some snow showers out east, what that's going to do is actually going to battle high pressure and low pressure, create that gradient and bring in some gusty winds. the diablo winds will be kicking up here as we go on late monday on into tuesday. now with the fire risk low with the rain that we've gotten, i'm not too concerned there. we'll see those winds anywhere from 20 to maybe even 30 miles an hour. wait for any advisories to come into place. the situation gets better on wednesday, but down in southern california, that's where the situation could be worse. they have received very little rainfall this winter season, and those gusts look even crazier down there. 40 to 50 miles an hour right there through five, the santa monica mountains and even down into parts of orange county. so just be careful of that. if you do have to head south in the next couple of days. meantime, let'srap it all up here. inland 7-day forecast, lots of sunshine. just what kira was asking for and all of us. and with the change in the wind pattern, you'll actually feel it a little bit
7:22 am
warmer. we'll go into some mid to upper 60s right there. so dry start to january but it looks nice. we're going to enjoy it while we have it. san francisco and along the peninsula. also expect some gorgeous stays. just a little bit of the wind situation to start it, but after that looks great. i know we need the rain but can't. can't beat the sunshine. i know. love it, love it. cynthia. thanks. 721 much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, the warriors played without steph curry. did you see how they did. plus tonight no jonathan kuminga in the lineup. the injury he suffered in what steve kerr is saying about it. sports

7:30 am
there. so if people are stepping out with their robes and their warm shoes, i don't blame you. i would be doing the same because we start with 39 right now in south san jose. many more cities waking up in those 30s today. 37 danville, 39 out in pleasanton, up in napa as well. those low 40s for the north bay. it's the immediate bay that has slightly warmer numbers right now, 48 san mateo and 44 over on in hayward. we will warm it up a little bit compared to yesterday. that was cold, right? some hazy sunshine in the mix. to share those sunset pictures with us, i'll show you one that came into my inbox yesterday. we'll continue the dry and gusty weather ahead into our first full week of january, and the numbers are going to actually start to feel much nicer. so we'll talk about that outlook coming up in about ten minutes. kira all right cynthia, thanks. we are following that breaking news out of oakland where police are investigating several early morning crimes and whether they are connected. it all started around 230 this morning. opd first responded to this extra mile gas station at 17th and
7:31 am
castro streets. an employee told police that a group shattered the front door. as you see there, made their way inside and stole the entire cash register. the employee was not hurt. then, just after 3 a.m, it's believed the same group broke into a safeway in the ridge shopping center on broadway and pleasant valley avenue. employees were inside at the time. they told police the group broke down the dooror into the office, as you e there, and also stolen entire cash register, among other things. no one was hurt there. and about an hour later, 4 a.m, police responded to this smash and grab at it is what it is on san pablo avenue. after the thieves rammed the car through the security gate and glass doors, they ransacked this smoke shop. at least six people were seen on video. if you have any information about any of these crimes, you're asked to call
7:32 am
oakland police. i will remain of the goodness. of god. beautiful. this is in new orleans. faith leaders and community members gathered yesterday for a call to prayer, all to pray for and honor the victims of the bouourn street terror attack. 14 people were killed, dozens seriously injured, when an attacker used a rental truck and plowed into crowds on bourbon street, enjoying new year's eve and new year's morning. makeshift memorials have been arranged by locals who witnessed the attack and wanted to pay respects to those who lost their lives and staying in new orleans. we have just learned that police will hold a news conference updating on the investigation at 9 a.m. our time this morning. in about an hour and a half, we are also learning more about the man who intentionally drove his truck into a crowd in new orleans, killing all those people.
7:33 am
investigators say he used a very rare explosive compound in two homemade bombs that did not detonate. but the explosive has never been used in a u.s. terror attack. officials say the bombs were placed in coolers near the attack. a transmitter and two guns also were recovered inside the truck. and all of that evidence is now in the fbi's lab for testing. so as a result of that attack, questions are rising about san francisco based car rental app turo. both the new orleans attacker and the las vegas bombing suspect used the app to rent the vehicles involved. nbc news antonia hilton has more on how the app works and what the company is now doing to help law enforcement. car rental app turo under new scrutiny. oh my god. after authorities say it was used in connection with the deadly terror attack in new orleans and the cybertruck explosion in las vegas. the peer
7:34 am
to peer rental app is similar to airbnb, allowing users to rent a vehicle directly from an owner rather than a car rental company. you could get the keys to vacation success. users can meet car owners in person to pick up the ride, or organize a remote handoff, in wch renters unlock the car using a lockbox code or the app. why do you think someone would seek out an app like turo over more traditional companies like, say, a hertz? i think it makes it a little bit more anonymous. so when you go to a place like hertz or avis or or budget one, you're probably in an airport. there's going to be a ton of cameras around. everybody is going to see you. they have access to data streams that maybe an app like turo does not. turo, confirming its platform was used to rent the ford pickup truck that plowed through new orleans bourbon street early wednesday morning, and the tesla cybertruck that was filled with explosives outside trump international hotel in las
7:35 am
vegas. authorities say right now, there is no definitive link between the two incidents. there is going to be a lot of scrutiny on whether or not they are doing best practices relative to their industry peers. are they doing enough background checks? are they providing enough safeguards? because the question will be, what is their responsibility, and how far did they deviate from that? in a statement, a spokesperson saying in part, we do not believe that either renter involved in the las vegas and new orleans attacks had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat. we remain committed to maintaining the highest standards in risk management. turo has approximately 150,000 active hosts worldwide, with 350,000 active vicle listings and 3.5 million active guests. turo's website says turo screens users when they create an account, and again when they book a car. after that, screenings can be triggered for several reasons and may prompt turo to deny users access to a
7:36 am
car or app. however, turo says it cannot reveal information about its screening process other than that it involves a renter uploading their driver's license. certainly, you can trace these things down, but again, with the adapting technology, we're foolish to think that the criminals and terrorists are not going to adapt. in fact, they may actually outinnovate law enforcement, which is what really makes it difficult. that was antonia hilton reporting. now to the woman convicted of killing singer selena filing for parole 30 years ago back in 1995. yolanda saldivar killed tejano superstar selena quintanilla. perez. at the time, the quintanilla family had accused saldivar of embezzling money from selena's fan club and clothing boutiques. selena confronted saldivar about the allegations at a days inn motel in corpus christi. that's when saldivar shot and killed selena.
7:37 am
saldivar was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years. her parole review date is set for march 30th. now to israel. facing mounting pressure from rights groups and the united nations over its detention of a hospital chief from gaza. in san francisco yesterday, hundreds of protesters joined the call for his release, as well as a stop to all military aid for israel. the pro-palestinian protest took place at union square. demonstrators want more aid sent to gaza. all health care workers released and an immediate arms embargo. throughout this genocide. in the past 15 months, israel has consistently targeted and attacked hospitals and health care workers and have abducted health care workers. and that's especially why we're here today, is because the situatioion in northern gaza is extremely dire. the protest
7:38 am
comes after the last remaining functional hospital in northern gaza was destroyed last month. human rights organizations say gaza's health care system has been pushed to the brink of total collapse, deepening the humanitarian crisis there. back here in the bay area, happening tomorrow in east bay, firefighters union will hold a press conference to call on oakland city council members to reopen two closed fire stations. right now, the city is facing a massive $130 million budget deficit, and oakland is making big cuts everywhere. that includes closing two fire stations for six months. we told you about this yesterday morning. their fire stations, 25 and 28 closures will begin tomorrow. city leaders say it will save oakland about $5 million. the fire department is already keeping one station closed for remodeling and will keep it closed as part of those budget cuts. a press conference

7:44 am
share them with me. they'll end up on air like torrance. thank you. we see the system up towards the pacific northwest, us here in the bay area. we'll just get some high clouds moving throughout the day so it will be dry. expect more peeks of sunshine compared to yesterday, where it was a little bit of a gloomy start to the weekend. so we'll see that sunset coming in and you're feeling the days a ttle bit longer, that sunset going about a minute or two later as we go towards the next couple of days and through the month. so what can we expect with our high temperatures? we'll just boost them up a little bit compared to yesterday. low 60s from los gatos over on into gilroy. cool out there in the tri-valley with 59 in dublin, 60 in oakland. and we'll continue those low 60s up there in novato tomorrow and even on into tuesday. we bump those numbers, even getting into some mid to upper 60s as we get that dry, high pressure ridge building here. but it's going to come with a little bit of a twist. here's what's going on the next couple of days. with the diablo wind situation
7:45 am
expected late monday turning a little bit breezy on into tuesday, the winds will shift, turning offshore, gusting anywhere from about 15 to 40 miles an hour. now, i mentioned that the fire risk is a little bit low with the rain that we've gotten, but the tree situation could be different as the rain has saturated the ground, so we'll keep an eye on that. our neighbors down to the south dealing with even gustier winds 55 to 80 miles an hour there with the santa ana. so that fire threat is much higher as they've gotten some negligible rain this water year. so something definitely that we'll keep an eye on here and bring you any updates as we see them the next couple of days. san francisco and along the peninsula. dry weather, gusty at times, but just some beautiful golden state sunshine right there through the city and our inland valleys. as i mentioned, those numbers gradually ticking up every day through the week. so getting back to school and to work the sunshine will be out. at least it won't be raining though, with people dealing with those

situations on the roads. we don't want that the start of a new year, right? all right cynthia, thanks. we

farewell is underway for late former president jimmy carter. here's a live look now at the carter center in atlanta, georgia, where you can see his casket lies in repose. people have been passing through to pay their respects for the beloved 39th president of the united states. just yesterday, carter's flag draped casket was carried out of the hospital where he died. a motorcade then traced important places in the former president's life, first traveling through his hometown of plains, georgia. people lining the route waving flags, saluting and holding signs. a blessed man. i remember him at my uncle's funeral back in 1988. yes, my uncle used to work for him in plains, so i remember him
7:49 am
being there. so yes, i was off today, so i couldn't miss it. the procession also stopped at the farm, the peanut farm where carter worked alongside sharecroppers who worked for his father. the motorcade then continued to atlanta, stopping in front of the state capitol, where carter once served as a state senator and governor of georgia. his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren accompanied the hearse, uplifted at the outpouring of support. everybody always having such good things to say about him from leaders all over the nation. and so it just really does warm your heart to see all the lives he has touched. president carter will lie in repose at the carter center in atlanta until tuesday morning. he will then be moved to washington, dc to lie in state at the u.s. capitol until his state funeral on thursday, followed by a private funeral in plains, georgia. we're going to turn now to back in 2022. the u.s. supreme court overturned
7:50 am
reproductive freedoms for women in the dobbs decision by reversing the famous roe versus wade case. the justices declared that states had the power to decide that question. but now, in 2025, the issue remains a big topic of discussion. voters in ten states weighed in on the abortion issue last november alone. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins us. great to see you. happy new year. and to you. this is a very personal question, and it seems more unsettled than ever. kira this is an issue not about to go away. you mentioned it 2022. that's when the infamous i guess for many, dobbs decision came to be from the supreme court. but since then we now have 20 states, 20 states that have either banned abortion altogether or severely restricted it to a time period less than what we had with roe versus wade. 20 states now, in those 20 states, mind you, we've got 40% of the women in the united states living there. but but more ironically than that,
7:51 am
67%, two thirds of the population in those 20 states supports a woman's right to choose. despite all these laws. it's an incredible disconnect, if you will. and so what are the chances of, say, hypothetically, congress stepping in to sort of bring some, some order, some clarity to the state by state rules? although i know that was the whole purpose of undoing the decision, as president elect trump always says, he wants to leave it to the states. what's the odds of congress stepping in? you know, it's a hard question to answer right now because there's so much out there. remember, just last junu, the supreme court said mifepristone could be used as as adopted by the fda. that's only 63%, by the way, of all abortions have done that way. and then beyond that, just a few months ago, the state of tennessee went ahead and banned the idea of unaccompanied minors leaving for abortion. that's going to go to the supreme court. and then just two weeks
7:52 am
ago, two weeks ago, the attorney general of the state of texas went ahead and sued a doctor in new york for sending mifepristone out to texas. so there are so many things before the congress can ever get to these things. but if it does, if it does, they may just turn to the comstock act. that comstock act of 1873 that banned abortion materials altogether. there's a lot going on. and, by the way, i'm sorry, 1873 and by the way, j.d. vance. j.d. vance, the then senator and now vice president, actually asked the department of justice last year to go ahead and enforce that comstock act. so before congress gets to it, there's an awful lot of stuff that's left before the u.s. supreme court. wow. i mean, what do i know? but that doesn't seem like a very current judgment, considering it was, what, 152 years ago before i was born, right? and before i was born. my
