6:00 am
will be on the united states capitol to see what happens here on january 6th. right now at 6:00, marking four years since the january 6th capitol attack, congress, hours away from certifying trump's presidential win. and we're live in washington with the heightened security in place for that and the new threat being posed by the weather. plus, daunting new data shining a light on just how many people are living in the streets here in the bay area. we're breaking down the new federal report and the issues advocates say are contributing to the problem. and what a weekend kickoff for yet another
6:01 am
delay to dungeness crab season. but now the wait is over. we catch up with fishermen and crowds lining up for that first delicious taste. this is today in the bay. so get up and melt the butter. yeah, i could smell it already. thanks so much for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. i'm just having coffee at this point this morning. breakfast of champions. all right. first monday of the new year carries back as well with a look at the forecast. yeah. if you're getting up early this morning and maybe getting a jump on that workout for the new year's resolutions, we are going to have some fog we're dealing with in san rafael, as we've seen the dense fog moving around parts of the north bay and near the coast. so we are going to see at times low visibility in some spots down to zero in novato, with a quarter mile visibility in santa rosa, napa, as well as san francisco and
6:02 am
half moon bay. as we take a look at san jose, it's nice and clear. we will see that fog clearing out and shifting to a kind of hazy sky, and it will turn windy late tonight into tomorrow, building up some waves near the coast. but the dry weather continues at least throughout the week, so i'll be tracking that for you. mike, you're seeing the bay bridge is backing up. yeah, we're back to our commute. this is the first full workweek of 2025. so happy monday, folks. and there is the backup or just a little bit later than we often see. but this mday folks are a little bit slower getting back. i know a lot of schools are back in session. some still have a couple days left on their vacation. we do have highway 37 with some slowing the commute as well as some fog, so use caution up there. throughout the area. we're looking at highway four actually recovering from an earlier crash right at the junction with 242. so this is better than it was a half hour ago. even though we see the build extending down in toward the walnut creek corridor. and highway 24 is smooth coming off that interchange all the way to the bay bridge, a smooth flow across the san mateo and the
6:03 am
dumbarton bridges. but the build is happening over in the east bay. san jose has your traditional slowing? hadn't seen that for about a week and a half either. back to you. thank you mike. a live look now at the u.s. capitol, where today marks four years since the january 6th capitol siege. at the same time, vice president kamala harris today will lead a joint session of congress to certify her own election loss to donald trump. and she'll be focusing on ensuring a peaceful transfer of power. it comes with a new op ed piece by president biden in today's washington post, which says in part, quote, we cannot accept a repeat of what occurred four years ago. biden also reveals he's invited president elect to the white house on the morning of his inauguration today in the bay's chris pallone joins us live in washington this morning. we know that security remains extremely tight there. yeah. that's right. chris and laura, good morning. from a very snowy washington, d.c. today,
6:04 am
uncharacteristically so. and democratic leadership here on the hill say they know of no organized attempt to object to donald trump's election victory later on today. and we almost everyone here believes that we will avoid the violence that we saw four years ago on this date. but nobody's taking any chances. the entire capitol, now surrounded by security fence as barriers block key streets. congress taking no chances for years after a pro-trump mob attacked, delaying the counting of electoral votes and the certification of joe biden's 2020 victory, the eyes of the world will be on the united states capitol to see what happens here on january 6th, with rare heavy snow forecast for washington. the rest of the federal government is already closed for the day. house speaker mike johnson urged members to stay in town to make sure certification can take placace. the electoral count act requires this on january 6th at 1 p.m. so whether we're in a blizzard or not, we're going to
6:05 am
be in that chamber making sure this is done. unlike 2021, when prominent republicans objected to the vote results, democratic leaders say they don't know of any coordinated efforts on their side to protest trump's victory. there will be no election denying on the part of the democratic caucus. vote certification is just one of several high profile, high security events happening in washington this month, with president jimmy carter's state funeral shifting from georgia to the capital tuesday and donald trump's inauguration later this month, congressional leaders feel they're better prepared now. what happened last time were an officer's words haunt me foforever on the police line sa. does anyone have a plan? does anyone have a plan? and the answer from the leadership back then was no. now we have clear leadership in place. the first test for that plan comes today, and this vote certification process begins in a little less than four hours here on capitol hill, as the law goes. vice president kamala harris will preside over it, essentially
6:06 am
making official her election defeat to donald trump. christian. laura, back to you. it's got to be a tough one. all right, chris pallone, thanks for the latest from washington. while federal investigators in new orleans are providing an eerie first look at how the man behind the deadly new year's attack prepared ahead of time, agents say the attacker recorded this video on his meta glasses in october as he biked around the french quarter and on the night of the attack. surveillance cameras captured him placing two coolers containing explosives near bourbon street. that's where 14 people died and 30 more were injured before the attacker was killed. neither of those devices detonated. police say someone intentionally set a tesla on fire yesterday afternoon. it happened at a parking lot on arnold drive in martinez. video shows the flames and smoke coming out of the car's window. the exact cause of the fire has not been revealed. a new federal data is shining a light on just how many people are struggling to make it in the bay, and it
6:07 am
shows many of the unhoused population is they are living in the south bay. that is the end of year assessment, which found nearly 40,000 people are without housing across the bay area. about one quarter are in the south bay across santa clara county, where the rate of homelessness is about 5% higher than one year ago. some advocates say they are not surprised. that's probably even an undercount. there's been there's a consistent number of people that continually get priced out of san jose, and they end up on the streets. there was a lot of people who ended up getting evicted after covid, after the protections ended. the south bay is not unique in having a higher rate of homelessness. in contra costa county, the rate surged by 20% compared to last year. san mateo county is up 15%, san francisco is up 10%. we are talking about this at the top of the newscast.
6:08 am
the bay area's commercial dungeness crab season officially underway in san francisco yesterday. fans lined up to receive their share of the very first catch. this is one of the latest ever recent starts to crab season. migrating whale concerns are commonly pushing it out further these days, but one crab lover calls it worth the wait. it is what it is, you know, as long as the whales are safe, you know. you know, i can wait and get my crab. so coming out here, you know, with everybody else is, you know, a little exciting. well, historically, the bay area's local crab season would start in mid-november before thanksgiving. but believe it or not, that hasn't happened in more than five years. that is a big wait. well, this morning a powerful winter storm is moving across the plains into the mid-atlantic, bringing sleet, snow, ice, and gusty winds. and this is what it looks like right now in manhattan, kansas. it's one of several places where the schools are closed as the kids
6:09 am
enjoy the day, but everybody else tries to dig out. we just got word that 334,000 customers are also without power across the u.s. because of this winter storm. now in kansas city, missouri, crews are still expected to need plenty of time to plow the snow. and that storm prompted the kansas department of transportation to issue a statewide advisory urging people to avoid travel unless it's an emergency. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that storm, and we saw chris pollone just a moment ago in washington, d.c. those lawmakers have to get to the capitol, and it is snowing hard there. yeah. so it's going to continue to snow. they're looking at up to a foot of snow in d.c. i mean, that's pretty crazy there. and it continues to move across parts of the midwest. and now moving off towards the east, you can see pretty much all of pennsylvania is covered by some snow, as well as around the d.c. area. and then just south of there, it changes over to a wintry mix of freezing rain and possibly some
6:10 am
sleet. so we'll be watching out for the impacts that has as we go throughout the day. behind that system, temperatures are dropping. we're going to see highs in the teens in kansas city today. that means those lows will most likely be around zero. and then we'll also see that cold air blasting off towards the east. with new york city's high today only making it up to about 31 degrees. so we're seeing some snow as well around denver, and we'll see those impacts there. here in the bay area we are looking at highs today near 60 degrees as dry weather continues for the next several days. so we'll talk more about that. coming up. mike has a look at where we can find some slightly lower gas prices. yeah. first full workweek of the new year folks. so let's take a look. the south bay tops our list. san jose has 349 reported at arco on north fourth street at taylor. that's right. in japantown. we have another one of those, not japantown, but we do in san francisco. but this is 349 i'm talking about. that's in
6:11 am
sunol sunol superstop on andrade road and in san francisco itself. that's not far from 349, 355 for their best at golf on mission street. so to start your work year, perhaps go to gasbuddy.com so you can fill up and get to work safely at the roadways. we're looking at green sensors, but we do have many more cars on the roadway, enough to queue off the bay bridge backup in the toll plaza. slowing. they're slowing on highway four, slowing on highway 37. haven't seen those areas this slow for a couple of weeks. there's the bay bridge backup. it's full now. it's 610. the metering lights were turned on a little bit later this morning, but they'll be back to normal probably tomorrow. back to you. what a difference. everyone's going back to work. got to pay for christmas, right? yes. 611. right now, new york city waking up to a new toll charge just for sitting in traffic. coming up next, the amount commuters will now need to pay. and we break down the way the city hopes it could get more cars off the street. that is interesting. and
6:12 am
major changes are coming to how you access wi-fi on your next flight. the airline now rolling out internet from space for its passengers in the sky. welcome to the 82nd golden globes. the biggest night the golden globes. now in the books. how the bay area won big on tv and the big screen next. you're watching today in the bay.
6:15 am
day morning. it is 614. we are taking a live look outside in dublin. it is all clear here, but very chilly. temperatures now dropping down to 38 degrees. bundle up. it's going to be a cool morning with a lot of clouds and eventually some peeks of sunshine with a little bit of a cool down today. we'll talk about what's ahead for the rest of the week, coming up in a few minutes. well, the volume of traffic is ramping up compared to the last couple of weeks. here's the richmond bridge heading over towards san rafael. back up. you also see the glow for these lights. the fog has crept around this morning. we see it in richmond. we'll check the bay bridge. we'll check the golden gate bridge. there's some more patches that we find. good morning. wall street is set to open higher as investors gear up for a lot of economic data. and
6:16 am
another shortened trading week. the markets will be closed on thursday. that's for the national day of mourning for former president jimmy carter. and stocks are coming off a positive day on friday. but it was a shaky week overall as the dow, the nasdaq and the s&p 500 ended in the red. now in focus this week we get data on the services sector, job openings, factory orders, jobless claims, the minutes from last month's federal reserve meeting, and it's all topped off by the december jobs report. on friday, the united airlines plans to start testing. elon musk's starlink for inflight intnet next month, and it expects to begin offering the service on a commercial flight this spring. now, united plans to outfit its entire two cabin regional fleet and have its first starlink enabled plane on major routes by the end of the year. starlink provides broadband internet service through a network of satellites, and the consumer electronics show is being held this week in las vegas, and

samsung is leading the way. now it's expanding a push into what else? ai, with a suite of enhancements to its premium tvs. the ai powered screens will be able to search online for info about what's being displayed, such as identifying a product or an actor. they'll also be able to translate in real time and generate custom background images, as well as boost colors and optimize audio. with your cnbc morning business report, i'm silvana henao. i'm glad to hear we can optimize audio. there you go. well, new york city a controversial traffic plan is now in effect. yesterday, it became the first city in the country to have so-called congestion pricing. that means drivers during this morning's commute had to pay a $9 toll to drive on city streets into the heart of manhattan. that toll drops to 225 during off hours. city officials hopes it will reduce traffic gridlock while raising money for public
6:18 am
transit. i think it's just a tax. it's not going to alleviate any congestion. places like chicago and los angeles, which also have pretty severe traffic congestion, are watching to see what happens here in new york. the program launched without major hiccups yesterday morning, and so far there has not been too many issues. during this first monday of the year. we'll see when they get there. bills. right now trending this morning, it was a glitzy start to this year's award season as the golden globes took over l.a. last night. it was cool because several bay area stars won big, including ali wong, who took time to thank the bay area in her speech. you know, i come from san francisco and that's where i started doing stand up, and i wouldn't be here if it wasn't for all thetage time that i got there. wong earned the award for the best stand up comedy performance for her netflix comedy special, single lady. this is the second golden globe for the pacific heights native, another bay area artist took home the prize. director jon chu accepted the cinematic and box office achievement for
6:19 am
wicked. my parents came to this country and loved wizard of oz. they tell us about the golden, a yellow brick road and the rainbow place over the rainbow that all your dreams come true if you dare to dream it. and so when i'm up here looking at you, living the dream and looking at this beautiful, beautiful cast, it's more beautiful than i ever thought it could be nice to see those bay area faces. other big winners include emilia perez, baby reindeer and shogun. lots of things to put on your list if you haven't started. i supported the chu family two generations over. i did. i did a lot o the restaurant and the movies. chu chu in los altos a really a traditional great favorite here. all right. maybe i was just thinking. i haven't seen any of those movies, so i felt pretty good. like i had, you know, done okay, which is rare for me to sit down and watch something. it's new year's goal, believe it or not. got to get you to sit down. relax. i need to sit down. other than sitting here all right. and moving a lot of
6:20 am
people choosing to exercise first of the year this morning. bundle up. getting a jump on that. it is cold to start. and we've also had to watch out for low visibility. take a look at this live view in san francisco where the fog is rolling on by. we can't even see the top of the transamerica pyramid, but we are going to see at times that low visibility. as we've been looking at the north bay, it's at zero right now in novato as well as san francisco, and it has been changing in other spots like half moon bay right now down to a half of a mile at times as that zero. and it's at a quarter mile visibility for napa and a lot less for fairfield. so watch out for the fog near the coast. we'll start to see waves building today. right now we're seeing a lot of those current readings at about 7 to 8ft. but we are looking at the forecast for the waves to build up to 15 to 20ft. so that will make it very dangerous with those sneaker waves as well. there is a storm system off the coast, but that is going to go up and around the bay area. in
6:21 am
fact, we're seeing another system that's missing us and just off to our east with some rain and sierra snow for those higher elevations, we call that an inside slider. well, we are going to see the temperatures today headed up to about 60 degrees, so it will be a little bit cooler than it was yesterday. but we will be on a warming trend. this is a look at tomorrow's highs where we could see it up to 68, in santa rosa, as well as mid to upper 60s for much of the south bay. and then on wednesday we're looking at also some well above normal temperatures as high pressure builds. there will be a very fast moving area of low pressure dropping down, and that's going to create some gusty winds and the possibility of those santa ana winds picking up for socal over the next few days. really high fire danger due to the fact that they really still haven't had any rain. while the bay area won't have any rain, we are not in as bad as of a position because we've had several storm systems already. take a look at the wind forecast that we are going to see picking up for
6:22 am
tomorrow around malibu, as well as la down to some areas like lake elsinore, where we could see winds at 30 to 40, possibly 50mph over the next few days. so we'll continue to monitor that. lots of sunshine here and nice mild temperatures all throughout the week. we'll just have to wah out for those cool temperatures and fog in the early mornings. and mike, you're seeing two factors that may slow you down. yes. some of the one of the factors you talked about was the fog. and it's crept over here toward the bay bridge. so have a lot of commuters. so we have more backup than we had for a couple of weeks here. we're back to our workweek as we start the new year. and we're looking at fog also impeding our view from the rooftop camera. we can't clearly see the east shore freeway or the berkeley curve, but i believe on the deck where people are driving, you should be all right so far. prepare for patches of dense fog in areas. our road weather index showing that throughout the north bay has all along the morning for highway 37 the bills now throughout the east bay. the south bay did show that first
6:23 am
burst for san jose. now things are back to normal. watch another 20 minutes from now. back to you. all right, bill, thank you very much, mike. 622 right now. coming up next on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds. the gifts were given, but some missed the mark. now tons of merchandise is returning to the store. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura with a revealing look at the returns by the truckload behind the scenes, and how they might score you a deal down
6:26 am
for some during the holidays, every gift is not so great. even if we do try. that is why today is national returns day. consumer investigator chris chmura is here with a look behind the scenes at what it looks like when we take a product back. good monday morning. our teams constantly helping viewers get their money back when a purchase or gift just doesn't work out. but what about the stuff itself to show us? a bay area based company called b-stock shared this warehouse video. it says all this stuff is returned merchandise that it's helping to steer away from landfills. b-stock sean cleland said they help sort merchandise to later be resold as refurbished or in outlets. right now, b-stock is seeing a surge by the truckload. on our platform. we see a 30% spike of inventory coming back
6:27 am
in really january, february, march. and we estimate this year it's about $170 billion of returns. cleland says only about 20% of stuff we return goes right back on the shelf as new, unopened merchandise. the remaining 80% ends up in a place like this, and later perhaps in your cart when you're hunting for a refurbished or gently used deal in that department, protect yourself. ask some questions. see if your refurbished product still carries a manufacturer's warranty. some do. also, check the return policy. can you return what you bought at a discount after someone e else returned it to you? sometimes, yes. should those purchases go sideways, you can return to us. snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. thank you chris. we have a lot more ahead for you at 630, including the current interim mayor of oakland leaving for another job after former mayor sheng thao was recalled. so who's next in line?
6:28 am
we're breaking down the crucial vote happening today, and why it might not be the final say for who runs the city. plus, the city of oakland is temporarily shutting down two fire stations today to save money. the firefighters will be on the steps of city hall later this morning, asking the city not to do that. stay wi us. you'reth

6:31 am
since i went to grass valley elementary school, and when my grandmother had a heart attack in 2014, the station was the first to respond. right now, at 630, growing concerns in oaklan, with two fire stations closing today due to budget cuts. last minute push to keep each open by one firefighter taking on a new leadership role. plus, four years after the january 6th capitol attack, vice president harris is set to certify former president trump as the winner of the election. the security measures in place this morning and trump's promise to pardon some of those rioters. plus, governor newsom reveals his state budget proposal. the issues he says he will focus on for californians. this is today in the bay. good monday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia and i'm kris sanchez. marcus has the morning off. we want to get you
6:32 am
started with a first look at your first monday of 2025 forecast. good morning kari. good morning. and if you're getting a jump on those resolutions or if you just got to get to work, we've had some issues with fog in parts of the north bay and near the coast this morning. here's a live look outside in san rafael. we've seen at times this camera get really blurry with that low visibility and that fog m moving in. in novato, visibility is down to zero. be really careful this morning and allow some extra time to get there. and san francisco also at times seeing no visibility due to the dense fog. as far as temperatures, we are starting out chilly with some upper 30s in the inland east bay and 40s elsewhere, where our high temperatures this afternoon will be a little bit lower compared to yesterday, as we get a mix of sun and clouds for the afternoon. highs near 60 degrees. we'll talk about some minor changes as we go through the week that's coming up in the full microclimate forecast. sounds good. we'll look forward
6:33 am
to it. 632 right now, later this morning, oakland firefighters will call on the new city council to reopen two fire stations, which are closing down to save money. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live. bob, as you know from reporting over the years, you know, these stations are located in areas with a reputatation for metimes deadly fires. you are correct. good morning to you, chris and laura. the city of oakland already has a reputation, is already known nationwide for having one of the most dangerous urban wildfire conditions in the country because of the hills, because of the large amount of vegetation, and of course, the density of the homes and other structures. but unfortunately, starting today, the city of oakland will be temporarily shutting down two of its stations located in the hills station 28 near the lake chabot golf course and station 25 near joaquin miller park. this is for the next six months at a savings of about $5 million, and this is to help the city close its $129 million budget gap. now, this is
6:34 am
in addition to a third station closure, station ten, which has been closed for renovations already. the chief of the oakland fire department told us on friday that the department would have five other stations covered the calls that would normally be covered by those two stations temporarily shut down. the union that represents firefighters is against these closures. they say this means more oaklanders could face response times of more than ten minutes. the union writes that brain damage from a loss of oxygen in an emergency can start within six minutes, and a house fire can become life threatening in two minutes. i don't want to miss the misconception that there's no impact here because there is an impact. there's a great amount of impact. what our job is, is to figure out how we can lessen that impact to the public. i'moncerned because, you know, the fire department is a vital resource to have, especially with all of the forests that are around here. and we're having a lot more fires, you know, that that i
6:35 am
think is really important to make sure that we can be safe. i just made some phone calls about it, and we're going to fight to get this back open. so if a senior is need some help in emergency, we have to wait for another fire station to come up to heal and go through. what if it's something where they can't get by? that was ken houston, who will be sworn in later this morning as the city council member representing grass valley. he says his priority is to get station 28, which is located in his district, reopened as soon as possible. but that might be unlikely given that the city is scheduled to announce four other fire station closures by the middle of next month. again, to save money, the new city council will be sworn in, as i mentioned later this morning. but beforehand, at 10 a.m, the union that represents firefighters, they're going to go up on the steps of city hall to hold a press conference to ask the city council not to do these shutdowns. reporting live. bob redell today in the bay. all right. a lot to cover there.
6:36 am
thank you bob. well, also today, another change in leadership for the city of oakland. the city, of course, as you know, without a permanent mayor after the recall of sheng thao. so today, the newly elected council members will be seated and sworn in, but also recent interim mayor nikki fortunato bas will start her term as a county supervisor. so following today's officicial swearing in, members will select a council president. that new council president will take over as interim mayor until the april 15th special election. also new this morning, state lawmakers this week are getting a first look at governor newsom's new state budget proposal. and today, the governor is going to provide a sneak peek at some of the highlights. newsom plans to hold an event alongside workers in san joaquin valley, but state education leaders will be listening very attentively this morning on today in the bay, we spoke with troy flint of the california school boards association, and i asked him about some of the key priorities
6:37 am
when it comes to education, what he should focus on is consolidating the efforts that we have going on now at california schools. a lot of new programs have been introduced in recent years before, during and since the pandemic. and what we really need to do is streamline and really concentrate on the basics and making sure that schools are being as effective as possible. state education leaders are also calling for universal transitional kindergarten and a lower student teacher ratio in those classrooms. they are also pushing for a cap on financial liabilities for school districts when it comes to certain lawsuits. well, congress today certifies the results of the 2024 election, and it comes exactly four years since the siege on the u.s. capitol. adding to the irony, the woman president elect trump defeated will certify her own loss.
6:38 am
joining us now to talk about all of this is nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston. larry, always a pleasure to talk to you. happy new year to you as well. all right. so let's talk about what's happening today. democratic leaders say there's no threats of violence in washington today. although we know that security is said to be very, very tight there. do you think that this is going to be commonplace? obviously, we'll never forget what happened january 6th, four years ago. well, good morning to you, laura, and happy new year to you, kristen. and folks down there at the station. look, this is going to be a fairly normal day as normal goes in washington. and it helps. i think that you've got a few inches of snow blanketing the area. that will put a damper on anybody who might have thought about doing anything, but we don't have that problem this year. we don't have that problem simply because trump won. therefore, all the folks associated with him who might have thought about doing anything certainly have no reason to do it because he won. so we really won't know what's
6:39 am
going on in washington in terms of true normalcy until the next election. and if the republicans win that time, will they step down and just allow orderly change, or will they, in fact go ahead and say, no, we want to be more active about it as they were four years ago. that's an event, laura, that was the most serious event, just with the potential of disrupting american democracy since the civil war. and it's amazing to me how quickly that's disappeared into the annals of history. well, president not keeping it. president trump keeping it alive. he's vowing to pardon everyone involved in that insurrection. what message do you think, larry, that this will send? and will there be any political fallout from that decision as well? it's certainly going to add, i think, to the polarization we already have in this country, which, as you know, is quite severe, going ahead and pardoning people who are responsible for that violent effort. this was not just a tour gone bad as as one republican
6:40 am
member of congress said. this was a violent insurrection with thousands of participants. so to go ahead and wave a magic wand and say, it's okay, you know, boys will be boys or whatever, i think sends a powerful message that violence is okay if you lose an election and you won't be punished for it. i think this is going to lead to an awful lot of discussion, and it's probably not the best way for this president to begin a new term, given all the angst around him to begin with. but nonetheless, he's indicating that. and so from that, i think we can expect a large a large amount of fallout and heartache to the family, no doubt, who actually lost loved ones during all that. all right, so jumping to today, i mentioned vice president kamala harris has to certify her own election loss. that's got to be emotional. it's part of her job there. she's got to put those personal feelings aside. you know, you've heard theerm heavy heart. she certainly has to have one today. she ran an incredible campaign at 107 days.
6:41 am
most presidential campaigns last 18 months. it was a total uphill battle, no matter how you look at it. and yes, she's got to do her job and she will do it. she will do it as she should. because once again, this looks to be a very normal transition. normal transitions mean you don't have the kind of violence that we saw four years ago. so i expect vice president harris to walk away saying, yeah, this could have been me. but no it's not. nonetheless, we go on and you know as well as i do, there's a gubernatorial election right around the corner. that's right. that will be interesting. nice to hint at there, larry gerston. all right. thank you very much for joining us. good to see you. good to see you, chris. all right. 640 now we want to take a live look at san jose, because look at the beginning of the sunrise. looks so nice and pretty. but we know that it is cool out there. meteorologist kari hall has been telling us that this morning. yeah, we've seen some of those temperatures dropping down to the 30s, mostly in the 40s. and this is another look at that same view where we are all clear

here. but we've seen the fog moving around the coastline in parts of the north bay. it will become windy late tonight into tomorrow, and the next several days will be drier than what's normal as we get a live look outside in dublin with a clear view here as well. it is 38 degrees and we'll see a few more clouds moving in over the next few hours. some peeks of sun as highs top out near 60 degrees. mike, you were tracking the bay bridge for a few reasons. yeah, a couple reasons here. the volume of traffic is up, of course, from the last couple of weeks. we're back tour morning commute visibility. excuse me, is down and so is the activity within my vocal cords. over here we're looking at a smooth flow building for the east shore freeway. and pretty typical patterns distributed around the bay. but here highway 37 saw the morning commute build up as we expect, but a note for this week overnights from 9 p.m. there will be a closure, we're told, for eastbound 37 that's taking you over from sears point and novato, heading over toward vallejo if that's where you're going. late night tonight into 5

a.m. tomorrow. watch for that. you'll have to go up and over that longer route around, because eastbound 37 is continuing with that improvement project they're doing this week again from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. this morning, early hour commute south on vasco road had started to slow down pretty early for the commute, and it's still there, but we're at only a half hour out of brentwood and down toward 580. the south bay does see more northbound 101 volume than we did for a couple of weeks as well. oh, there's 87 with a little slowing to back to you. thank you. mike, it is 642 right now. a string of burglaries in oakland. up next, the video showing how the thieves were able to smash their way into a smoke shop. plus brand new video just in of an overnight break-in. plus, san francisco saying farewell to one mayor and hello to a new one. a special goodbye for london breed as preparations are underway for danielle laurie's inauguration in chinatown. we'll move over mudang. there's a new baby pygmy hippo in town and the world

thieves over a 24 hour period, police say. at least four oakland businesses were hit since late last night, and two of them were those safeway stores, one on redwood below skyline avenue and the other on fruitvale avenue, about one mile away. it follows a safeway break in early yesterday at the shopping center near broadway terrace. in that case, police say workers were still there when it happened, but fortunately no one was hurt. in all, thieves hit at least seven businesses since late saturday, including a car smash and grab. so in that case, the video shows the car slamming into the security gate at a smoke shop as a half dozen people run inside to steal things. this happened just about 24 hours ago on san pablo avenue. two massage businesses, two convenience stores also targeted. police so far are not talking about whether any or all of those

crimes are connected. the nation continues to honor and remember jimmy carter. this morning we have a live look at the carter center in atlanta. that's where the 39th u.s. president is lying in repose. six days of funeral observances began this weekend, and today in the bay's jay gray is in atlanta with how the nation is continuing to pay tribute to president carter for his life and his legacy carried by the secret service agents who protected him for so long. president carter's final trip mirrors his life's journey, beginning in rural georgia, where he spent 80 of his 100 years passing the methodist church where he married his beloved rosalind, and the house the couple built in 1962, where they lived until their passing, leaving only twice for four years in the governor's mansion and four more in the white house. hundreds lining the path

of the motorcade to atlanta. we lost a great american and a great person today that honor and respect following mr. carter to his presidential library, where he lies in state, an honor guard standing watch around the clock as crowds continue to gather. president carter represented a lot of people, and we were very proud of him. we respected him. respect earned, his family says, not only for his political career and amazing humanitarian efforts across the globe, but by the way, he lived his life every day for a century. he not only cared about the nation and the good that he did, he cared about his neigighbors next door. he always checked in on anybody in town he'd send letters to just how, from all the work he had to do, how personable he stayed with everybody. jimmy carter, a man who stayed true to his faith and his georgia roots while changing the world. jay gray, nbc news, atlanta. may he rest in peace.

morning for co-anchor hoda kotb. the hoda, as they're calling it, will run through friday's final show, which will wrap up hoda's seven year run alongside savannah guthrie. hoda's impact on both the show and off camera have been indelible, and savannah calls it the hoda effect. i mean, hoda is loved by every single person on our crew in the control room, the producers, every person on the plaza, everyone. and it's because she gives so much. she gives so much love. she is a one woman love bomb detonating everywhere she goes. the week long celebration begins later this morning on today, which is at 7:00, right after today in the bay. well, trending this morning following the mudang viral craze. a zoo in central virginia also getting in on the hippo hype. the richmond zoo just welcomed a new baby pig. baby pygmy baby hippo. but until

this morning, she was out without a name. the zoo held a voting contest, narrowing down suggestions to four possible choices, then narrowed down to a final two. and here they are. poppy and hammy. may. okay, spoiler alert here. the public decided to go with. what do you think? don't read the prompter. it's poppy. poppy. poppy. her mother's name is iris. so the choice is another flower. oh, yeah. gotcha. but poppy is going to get big, so watch out! big poppy. yeah. yeah. there you go. champagne, poppy? yeah. i don't know. all right. well, we are enjoying the cooler temperatures. at least i am anyway. yeah, it's been really nice here across the bay area, and the dry weather continues. just watching out for that dense fog that we are seeing. take a look at four of our microclimates right now where we are seeing a nice clear start from san jose to palo alto to walnut creek. but then in san francisco you can't even see anything. so this is where we

have that fog moving in. it's also been in the north bay. look at the bigger picture. shows that we don't have any wet weather, at least here in the bay area. there is a storm system offshore that's going to go up and around the bay area, but we alrlready hav one that's dipping farther to the south, and it's moving just over the sierra and points to the east with some rain and snow. we're getting some of those bigger winds picking up that will create some higher waves near the coastline. and even though right now we're seeing some of the buoys measuring the waves at about 7 to 8ft, there will be a beach hazard statement going up starting late tonight into tomorrow, as the breakers could build anywhere from 15 to 20ft, along with the risk of some rip currents and sneaker waves. watch out for that if you're going to be along the coast today. but other than that, we're looking at a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures close to 60 degrees, and it will be a little bit warmer tomorrow. in fact, well above what's normal for this time of year. we should be in the upper 50s. in some

spots it may be about ten degrees above that as high pressure continues to build, but this low quickly dropping in the showers that we are seeing to our east will create some really gusty winds for socal. and the possibility of those santa ana winds and an increased fire danger will be with us throughout the week while the bay area, even though it will be windy, we are not going to see the high fire danger due to the fact that we've had a lot of rain. they haven't seen it in socal. so with winds at 30, 40, 50mph over the next couple of days, we'll have to be very careful there and watch that area very closely here at home. we're going to see some nice weather, sunshine throughout the week and highs in the 60s. but mike, you're seeing a backup coming out of richmond. that's right. because of the volume of traffic and maybe a little bit because of visibility there okay. though more fog in the north bay. so we're watching for that. notice the slower sensors where you would expect hadn't seen it for a couple of weeks, but the traffic volume is restoring back to the bay. we do have a crash south 880 around auto mall that would present a
