been. we've stepped up for the city in tough times right now. at 11, growing concerns in oakland, with two fire stations
11:01 am
closing today due to budget cuts. we're live with more on the last minute push to keep each open. good morning and thanks for joining us i'm laura garcia. and i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington is off. so the city of oakland is just moments away from swearing in their new city council. and already they're confronted with a safety crisis that firefighters say will endanger thousands of residents. nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live this morning. and, bob, today the city temporarily shut down those two fire stations to save money. however, firefighters i understand they had a news conference pleading with the city to reverse course. you are correct. good morning to you, lauren kris. this news conference wrapped up about 40 minutes ago. one firefighter at this morning's news conference says these closures are, quote, a tragedy not worth the amount of money the city is savining given the amount of lives now at risk. according to the firefighters, this was the scene within the past hour at 10 a.m,
11:02 am
where dozens of oakland firefighters stood on the steps of city hall this morning, admonishing the city administrator, begging him to reopen these stations and warning that the planned closure of four more stations next month will make it impossible for firefighters to do their jobs and will lead to unnecessary deaths. starting today, the city shut down two stations located in the hills of oakland station 28, near the lake chabot golf course and station 25 here near joaquin miller park. these are for the next six months. these closures, at a savings of about $5 million to help the city close its $129 million budget gap. this is in addition to a third station closure. station ten, which has been closed for renovations. the oakland fire chief told us on friday that his department would have five other stations covered the calls that would normally be covered by the stations temporarily shut down. the firefighters union says this means some oaklanders could face response times of more than ten minutes, which is more than double the response time they offered before the closures. when dealing with emergency, we
11:03 am
all know that seconds count. the firefighters union pointed out this morning that every 30 to 60s, a house fire doubles in size, which means it could. conceivably, it doesn't take long for a home to become fully engulfed. hear this clearly. if you live in any of those neighborhoods that i just mentioned, be aware that you'll be waiting a very long time for help. regardless of your emergency, you will not have a fire engine at your doorstep in four minutes like you would have just yesterday. you will not quickly have firefighter paramedics to help you or your family. and what could have been a small blaze or a small fire near your house will become a conflagration, leaving tragedy in its wake. i've been telling lawmakers to try and hold their breath for ten minutes to know what oaklanders will experience while they help, while they wait for help to arrive. while we as firefighters are collectively holding our breaths, holding our breaths while we wait for the city to do the right thing, keeping oakland firehouses open.
11:04 am
the firefighters union says they responded to nearly 80,000 emergencies last year. if the city temporarily shuts down four more stations next month to save money. the union says that the seven closures in total will take away about 30% of their ability to respond to fires and other emergencies. yesterday we spoke with ken houston, who's about to be sworn in as a council member who represents the district that has station 28 in it. he says he's going to fight to get it reopened, to get that station reopened. the firefighters also calling on government leaders to finally come to a deal to sell this share of the oakland coliseum. and with that new money coming in, they hope that they could get these stations reopen sooner rather than later. reporting live, bob redell, nbc, bay area news. all right. a lot to follow there. thank you very much, bob. also breaking this midday today marks four years since the insurrection on the u.s capitol. this is a live look at capitol hill this midday where just moments ago, u.s. lawmakers

officially certified the 2024 election results. this is video of the process as it was getting underway. the vice president officially certifying her election loss to president elect donald trump in an op ed posted this morning, president biden is calling for everyone to not forget theruth of what happened that day, but also called for a peaceful transition of power. harris, meanwhile, echoing similar sentiments in a prerecorded message. this duty is a sacred obligation, one i will uphold, guided by love of country, loyalty to ou constitution, and my unwavering faith in the american people. as we have seen, our democracy can be fragile, and it is up to then each one of us to stand up for our most cherished principles and to make sure that in america, our government always

remains of the people, by the people, and for the people. there will no large scale democratic protests planned for today, but law enforcement is not taking any chances as security is tight. the entire capitol is surrounded by security fencing as barriers block key streets. back here at home, oakland police are investigating a string of overnight burglaries in oakland, and they include three separate safeway stores targeted by thieves over a 24 hour period. police say at least for oakland, oakland businesses were hit since late last night. that includes two of those safeway stores, one on redwood below skyline avenue. the other on fruitvale avenue, about one mile away. and there was another safeway break-in early yesterday at the shopping center near broadway terrace. in that case, police say workers were in the store when it happened, but fortunately no one was hurt. in all, thieves hit at least seven businesses since late saturday, including a smash-and-grab of a
11:07 am
car. a video shows the car slamming into the security gate at a smoke shop, and then about a half dozen people run inside to steal whatever they can. this happened around 4:00 this morning on san pablo avenue. meanwhile, a massage business and two convenience stores also were targeted early this morning. the owner of the massage store says the thieves just broke the door lock. they pushed the door and open it. that's very easy. that really is very easy. it's not. it's not. the lock is no special lock. police so far are not talking about whether any or all of those crimes might be connected. those break-ins come as a change in leadership for the city of oakland is actually in the works. we have a live look this midday at oakland city council meeting just got underway at the top of the hour. city, of course, without a permanent mayor. ever since the recall of sheng thao, newly elected

council members are being seated. also, recent interim mayor nikki fortunato bas is starting her term as a county supervisor. members will select a council president as part of today's proceedings. that person will take over as interim mayor until april 15th special election. developing now president elect trump's lawyers now trying to block his hush money sentencing. it is currently set for this friday. as we reported last week, the judge in the case has already signaled he does not plan to impose any sentence on trump that would involve prison time. but if the sentencing moves forward, his conviction would stand. trump was found guilty this past may on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment made to adult film actress stormy daniels in order to boost his electoral prospects in the 2016 presidential election. also developing this midday, canadian prime minister justin trudeau is planning to resign. he made that announcement earlier this morning, saying he will be prime minister until a new leader is
11:09 am
chosen. trudeau has been the prime minister for nine years and while initially popular in recent months, he has been facing mounting calls to step down over criticism from the donald trump tariff threats to the resignation of key allies, and disastrous poll numbers. this country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if i'm having to fight internal battles, i cannot be the best option in that election. a frontrunners to replace trudeau include the former and current prime ministers freeland and dominic leblanc, as well as current affairs ministers. taking a live look outside, this time from the south bay, we're tracking that monday forecast. this is a look at san jose. it was a foggy commute this morning for many people on the roads this morning. yeah. take a look at this. this is video from brentwood along vasco road. one of our editors shot this scene on her way to work today. you
11:10 am
can see the visibility conditions were very low and very limited this morning. meteorologist kari hall is here. the fog in that area has it lifted? not yet. and it's still going to be in effect. the dense fog advisory through noon. so we've got a little bit more time left as we've seen the fog really moving around some of those areas. this is a look in san francisco where at times you can't even see the transamerica building here. and we've seen in other spots the fog is still with us, and it will be very slow to dissipate over the next couple of hours. still zero visibility in novato and santa rosa. and then we're also seeing that moving through san francisco down to san carlos and through the delta. but it is all clear in san jose, and we're going to have a hazy day turning windy later on this evening into tomorrow. and we are going to continue with dry weather, at least for the next week. we'll talk about what concerns we have with this forecast that's coming up in just a few minutes. back to you. thanks so much, kari.
11:11 am
antioch leaders are expected to announce a new acting police chief tomorrow. the current interim chief, brian addington, is retiring again. he actually came out of retirement last year for a temporary take over. the choice to replace him on an interim basis is not yet known. this all follows a recent agreement to move the department past the racist text messaging scandal. last friday, the city reached a settlement with the justice department that includes a plan to hire an outside consultant within 90 days, along with a community engagement liaison. san francisco mayor elect danielle lowery is gearing up for inauguration day. he will be sworn in on wednesday at civic center plaza, and then he plans to attend celebrations in chinatown, which will include a banquet dinner, a special night market and outdoor performances. there will be vip guests at wednesday's banquet and are expected to include governor newsom, renowned chef martin yan and olympic gold medal skater kristi yamaguchi. the first night market on grant street

and biden and first lady are on their way to new orleans this midday. their visit comes as federal investigators are providing an eerie first look at how the man behind the deadly new year's attack prepared ahead of time. agents say the attacker recorded this video on his meta glasses in october as he biked around the french quarter and on the night of the attack. surveillance cameras captured
11:15 am
him placing two coolers containing improvised explosive devices near bourbon street. that's where 14 people died. 30 others were injured before the attacker was killed. neither of the devices detonated. a big boost to social security for millions of public workers, including teachers, firefighters and police officers. as president, biden signed the social security fairness act. it paves the way for nearly 3 million public workers to boost their social security benefits. the bipartisan bill repeals two provisions that reduce those benefits for certain workers who also get pension income. president biden says more than 2.5 million americans will now receive a lump sum of thousands of dollars to make up for the shortfall in benefits they should have received in 2024. well, state lawmakers this week are getting a first look at governor newsom's state budget proposal, and today, he plans to provide a sneak peek at some of the highlights. newsom will hold an event alongside workers in the san joaquin valley, but
11:16 am
state education leaders will be listening very attentively this morning on today in the bay, we talked with troy flint of the california school boards association. i asked him about some of the key priorities when it comes to education, what he should focus on is consolidating the efforts that we have going on now at california schools. a lot of new programs have been introduced in recent years before, during and since the pandemic. and what we really need to do is streamline and really concentrate on the basics and making sure that schools are being as effective as possible. state education leaders are also calling for universal transitional kindergarten, t-k and a lower student teacher ratio in classrooms. they are also pushing for a cap on financial liabilities for schools when it comes to certain lawsuits. u.s. steel and a japanese firm that sought to buy it are suing. the biden administration comes after the prpresident blocked the proposed
11:17 am
$14 billion deal. u.s. steel and japan's nippon steel say that president biden ignores the rules of law in order to gain favor with united steelworkers. that's the union representing most steel employees. the treasury department committee faileded to agree on whether nippon ownership posed a security risk, so they asked biden for a final decision. in the end, biden said, shifting the firm out of america's hands would undermine critical supply chains and put jobs at risk. dub nation, meanwhile, is dealing with some injury news. the warriors just learned that their young star, jonathan kuminga, will miss the rest of january with a high ankle sprain. last night they played the second back to back game at chase center and they came out flat against the kings, rallying or rather falli behind by 15 points after just one quarter. by the fourth quarter, the kings were in complete control and won by 30. afterwards, steph curry admitted there is something missing right now. nobody likes
11:18 am
to get embarrassed like that, especially the way we started the first quarter. i don't want to overreact to it, but you also have to address, you know, the execution that, you know, we didn't we didn't do by no means is it time to panic, though the warriors are still one game above 500, with the miami heat coming into town tomorrow. well happening now. a powerful winter storm is moving across the plains to the mid-atlantic and it is bringing snow, sleet, ice and gusty winds. hundreds of thousands of customers are without power across the u.s. due to this winter storm in kansas city, missouri. crews are still expected to need plenty of time to plow the snow. the storm prompted the kansas department of transportation to issue a statewide advisory, urging people to avoid travel unless it is an emergency. some are taking the opportunity, however, to enjoy the snow day. hang on
11:19 am
tight. this is video of our producers, two year old niece and her mom sledding down a hill in richmond, virginia. no. oh, didn't want to do it again. that area, one of the several states hit hard by the snow, we're told. the pair also watched a winter themed movie and enjoyed some hot chocolate today. that's why the little one didn't want the sled again. she was like, i'm ready for the cocoa. let's get the whipped cream going. you certainly have to bundle up if you're back there. and a lot of people that do have to clean up, right? yeah, i mean, it's been such a big issue. i mean, the kids, of course, enjoy the day off of school, but the parents are like, i still got two weeks at home, right? yeah, yeah. and it's been a mess. so let's take a look at the radar, the satellite, the storm system that's been moving through. and it's right now anywhere from new york all the way to western kentucky, where we are seeing quite a bit of that snow moving through. and then just south of that, we've had an ice storm. so that means it falls as rain and
11:20 am
then it freezes and it's been coating everything and giving a big layer of ice, which has caused many travel delays and issues behind this system. we have some really cold air coming in. so we're seeing those temperatures now. these are the highs that for tomorrow will reach into the 20s. and then the overnight lows have been in the single digits. so it's been bitterly cold as that cold air blasts across the eastern half of the country. here at home we are seeing some sunshine and actually some warmer than normal temperatures. we're kind of on the flip side of that. so we're going to see this weather continue today. it will be slightly cooler than it was yesterday, but still pretty mild. and this is also about what's normal for this time of year with a high of 60 in san francisco. we'll also be up to 60 in concord as well as 62 in gilroy today, tomorrow a little bit warmer. so we're looking at some mid 60s for many of our microclimates, including san
11:21 am
francisco. and we will see that continue into wednesday as well as much of the week. one thing i'm concerned about is the wind. so we're going to have a wind advisory in effect for the bay area hills. this will be in effect until wednesday. we're going to see those winds possibly picking up to 50mph, as this quick moving area of low pressure moves down and also creates the santa ana winds for southern california. but then the high pressure at the same time is keeping it dry. so we're seeing a very tight pressure gradient as well as the dry conditions that we'll see continue throughout the week. let's get a look at southern california, where we are expecting potentially winds gusting at 50 to 60mph. and that flowing offshore in this area that's been so dry that yet hasn't seen much rain. we're going to have to watch out very closely for the red flag warning and the fire danger that continues there. we've had quite a bit of rain, so we're at this
11:22 am
int looking pretty good despite the high winds and our temperatures warming up well above normal. we'll be in the upper 60s for the inland areas on wednesday, and then just slightly cooler for the end of the week into the weekend, while san francisco will see some mist and drizzle today. but otherwise we're going to see some sunshine into the weekend. back to you. thanks so much, kari. well, trending this midday. it was a glitzy start to this year's awards season, as the golden globes took over l.a. last night, several bay area stars won big, including ali wong, who took time to thank the bay area in her speech. you know, i come from san francisco and that's where i started doing stand up, and i wouldn't be here if it wasn't for all the stage time that i got there. wong earned the award for best stand up comedy performance for her netflix comedy special, single lady. this is the second golden globe for the pacific heights native, and another bay area artist also took home a prize a new one. director jon chu
