church itself as credibly accused of committing sexual abuse against children. if you don't have a list, it's justhe absence of the truth. sandra oldfield is one of two women who filed official complaints with the vatican today, demanding san francisco's archbishop, salvatore cordileone, be removed from his position in light of what they describe as serious inaction. oldfield says her abuse began when she was just 15 by a priest in her youth group that was grooming. i mean, that was setting me up that whole time for a sexual relationship. all throughout my teen years and beyond. and so it was just rape. that happened over a lot of years. the priest has accused reverend lawrence finnegan did not respond to our request for comment. oldfield says she first reported the abuse to the archdiocese more than 30 years ago, but tells us it was only after a recent meeting with archdiocese officials that finnegan was stripped of his ability to practice as a priest. oldfield has a pending lawsuit
6:01 pm
against the archdiocese, and also says she reported the abuse to police decades ago. but finnegan was never criminally charged.d. while the san francio archdiocese hasn't released a list of accused priests on its website, it does list priests in good standing. finnegan's name is no longer on it. attorney jeff anderson, who has represented thousands of victims in lawsuits against the catholic church, blame san francisco's archbishop for what he describes as a lack of transparency and your refusal to release a list and to keep these secrets and protect these offenders is diabolical. the archdiocese of san francisco wouldn't comment on any specific allegations, but in a statement told us it takes sexual abuse accusations seriously, adding that it aims to protect the rights of all alleged victims and alleged abusers, which is why the archdiocese says releasing a list of all priests accused of sexual abuse would be unjust. for those who are falsely

accused. they say that because they're more interested in protecting their reputation and the offenders than they are having the truth known about the peril that exists. and why is it that this archbishop and this diocese is the only in california that hasn't released a list, at least of those they deem credibly accused that they deem bigad? siobhan. nbc bay area news. we investigate, and our investigative unit has uncovered stories of abuse by catholic priests across the bay area, including revelations about priests in the oakland diocese. you can see their previous reports on our website. just head to nbcbayarea.com slash investigations. well, new charges tonight for a notorious bay area kidnaping. matthew mueller was convicted in the 2015 so-called gone girl kidnaping in vallejo. you remember that police initially accused the victim of making it
6:03 pm
up until mueller was finally arrested. he's currentlyerving 40 years. last month, he was charged with two other home invasions in the south bay. that happened before that gone girl case, but that were very similar to it. now he's been linked to yet another kidnaping in the east bay. they say mueller held three people at a home in san ramon in 2015, demanding one of them withdraw tens of thousands of dollars from their bank. police say after he got the money, he let them go. investigators say mueller confessed to the crime last year. while it has been four years since thousands of people protested at the nation's capitol, and then hundreds stormed it in an attempt to stop congress from certifying the results of the 2020 presidential campaign. and today, a much different scene on capitol hill, as vice president kamala harris certified the election of donald trump. donald j. trump of the state of florida has received 312 votes. kama harris.
6:04 pm
kamala harris of the state of california has received 226 votes. vice president harris, again pledging a peaceful transition of power. nbc bay area's ian cull spoke with lawmakers on capitol hill four years ago. and then again today. four years after thousands of people stormed the u.s. capitol trying to overturn the loss of then-president trump, south bay congresswoman zoe lofgren, who was there, says today she's thinking of the officers who stood up to the mob. many of them were severely injured, and they saved my life, and they saved the democracy, and i'm very grateful to them. she was part of the january 6th committee that investigated the insurrection. today, she responded to president elect trump's comments that he plans to pardon or grant clemency to at least some of those who were arrested. is despicable. but
6:05 pm
then so is he. and so he has the capacity to do that. i think it's a real slap in the face of the police here at the capitol. and really the rule of law overall today, a much different look and feel inside the joint session of congress, as vice president kamala harris was tasked with certifying the presidential election, confirming her loss and donald trump's win. this announcement of the state of the vote by the president of the senate shall be deemed a sufficient declaration of the persons elected president and vice president, while certifying the presidential election used to be an uneventful day. now it comes with significantly increased security around the capitol and its purpose, some lawmakers say, will forever feel different. today, we restore that respect for our constitution, our respect for election results, our respect for democracy. political analyst larry gerston

wonders what the next certification in 2029 will look like. will it be like today or four years ago? that was the most serious event with the potential of disrupting american democracy since the civil war. and it's amazing to me how quickly that's disappeared into the annals of history. ian cull nbc, bay area news. well, today was an inauguration day in oakland, kind of sort of. the new city council was sworn in along with a new city attorney. anand because of a recall, a new interim mayor was sworn in as well. newly appointed council president kevin jenkins will now serve as oakland's interim mayor. but in an unexpected switch, council member noel gayo will now take over as council president. the council also voted to appoint outgoing at large council member rebecca kaplan to serve as interim council member for district two. a lot of seats moving around here. that seat is being vacated by nikki fortunato bas, who was elected to the county board of supervisors. you're following me? okay. three new council

members also sworn in. they will face immediate challenges, including figuring out how to balance oakland's $129 million deficit that is already triggering massive cuts. we have issues. we have our challenges. but this is a resilient city, and we have a new council that's going to work hard to restore the trust in the city and restore the trust in this government. oakland firefighters were there for today's swearing in gathering before the ceremony to call on the city to overturn that decision, to temporarily close two fire stations to help balance the budget. those closures started today. now there will be a special election to choose a permanent mayor that will be held in april. meanwhile, former representative barbara lee officially opened a campaign finance account today for that potential run for oakland mayor in that special election in april. lee just retired from her house seat in house of representatives on friday after an unsuccessful run for the senate. lee has served in the east bay for more than three decades. there's been a
6:08 pm
grass roots push to get her to run for mayor. now, while there is a big step toward a run for the office, nothing is official yet. representatives for lee would only tell us today that, yes, she'll be making an announcement about the decision later this week. new at six. ultimate fighting ceo dana white joining the board of meta. that announcement about white, a longtime friend of president elect donald trump, comes just two weeks before trump's second administration begins. meta ceo mark zuckerberg posted on facebook, saying while white has built. white has built the ufc into one of the most valuable, fastest growing and most popular sports enterprises in the world. now, we have previously reported about zuckerberg's growing involvement with mixed martial arts, with them attending several ufc events, and also announced today john elkann, the ceo of italian holding company exor, and former microsoft executive charlie songhurst are also joining meta's board. and police are investigating the city's first deadly shooting of

the year. it happened this morning just before 1030, officers got a call about a shooting on rockford drive. when they arrived, officers found a 26 year old man on the ground with gunshot wounds. he died later at the hospital. now, police have not released his identity and are actively investigating the shooting. if you have any information, you're asked to call antioch pd. a vallejo man who spends much of his time giving back to his community is now in need of help himself. 48 year old melvin jones runs a food pantry and serves on three city commissions. but just days before christmas, he was hurt in a hit and run crash as he was moving from his wheelchair to his car. as nbc bay area's jodi tells us, hernandez tells us his community is now rallying to give him some help. he's getting ready to get into the car. first thing i do is always open up my door. mel jones shows us what he was doing when he realized a car was coming straight at him. i'm like, oh crap, pull myself in. like he pulled himself into the

want to help that i never met. it like brings tears to my eyes. jones is no stranger to hardship. he was paralyzed from the hips down after being wounded in a random shooting when he was 22. i'm a survivor. i guess so to say, you know, keep it up. with the community's help, he intends to keep giving back. most definitely. i'm trying to see if i could probably get on one more commission board. in vallejo. jodi hernandez nbc, bay area news. up next. dia de los reyes, the holiday celebrated by millions with a big focus on a special kind of cake. but could the egg shortage have an impact? we went to a san jose bakery today to find out. i'm sergio quintana at fisherman's wharf in san francisco. the california crabbing season has finally opened after a couple of months delay. and we'll tell you why. the price of crab may stick around for a while. coming up, i'm chief meteorologist jeff
6:14 pm
connoisseurs got their pick of fresh local catch yesterday right off the crabbing boats. now, restaurants across san francisco got their first shipments of local crab last night. that means today is the first day it will be on the menu. but as nbc bay area's sergio quintana tells us, the price of crab is higher than it's been for a few seasons and likely to stay that way for a while. at the alioto lazio fish company, there are two tanks full of crab fresh from the california coast. a catch from an afternoon crab boat will fill a couple more tanks. from here they'll head out to customers restaurants, wholesale markets, golf clubs, you name it, it's going. the season is supposed to
6:15 pm
start in november, so the big demand locally is usually for crab during thanksgiving, christmas and new year's. but even with the holiday season gone, crabbers are hoping to get a good price this season. do not expect it to be cheap. yeah. now, while commercial crabbing season has started in california, after a couple of months delay, there are still some restrictions on what those crabbers can haul in. commercial crabbers are limited to just 50% of their crab baskets this season. crabbing along the coasts of oregon and washington is still restricted because of whale migration patterns there, and according to angela sun kahleah at the alioto lazio fish company, crabbers are telling her what they're getting is nice and meaty, but it's tougher to find. at capurro's restaurant. their first shipment of crab came in last night. they look beautiful. they're big, they're tasty, nice and sweet. so we're happy to finally have a season lieu capurro says. today is the first day of the season. customers can order crab at his family's restaurant. he is disappointed this season started so late. thanksgiving. christmas new year's is really 75% of the
6:16 pm
demand for us, you know, so we're happy to get the 25% that's left. the commercial crabbing season usually ends in the early summer, but last year it ended in april in san francisco. sergio quintana, nbc, bay area news. well, a national egg shortage has created a new challenge for a long running religious celebration for christians. today is three kings day, or el dia de los reyes. that's in spanish. obviously, millions mark the occasion with the king's cake or la rosca celebration honors the biblical moment when the three wise men visited jesus and showered him with gifts. now, in a kings cake, 2 or 3 baby jesus figurines are baked into the dough, and whoever finds one when the cake is cut has to throw a tamale party on fruary 2nd. that's the day catholic saint mary and joseph brought jesus to the temple for the first time. we have some family and friends. we go. we are going to make a hot chocolate and champurrado today. so it's very important for all of us. mexico in san jose says it expects to
6:17 pm
sell between 4 and 5000 roscas, or king cakes today alone. but this year's egg shortage means the price of the key ingredient has skyrocketed by as much as 200%. and as a result, many bakeries say they've had to increase the price of the cakes as well. now you get the cake, you cut it, and then you're like, waiting to see if you're going to get the baby jesus. that's right. a lot of work ahead if you get it all right. and you know what i owe tamales party because i got the baby jesus a couple of years ago. your your tamales in arrears, i know. oh, lord, i'm sorry to all of my coworkers back then. all right. we'll talk about it later too. but we're taking a live look at emeryville right now because i want to get the just just kind of a different topic besides me oing this talk show. we need to go back to that. that is a lot of work to oh, man, you got to teach me how to make some tamales. yeah. oh, man. some good weather here. as we roll through the next couple of days, we're going to have some tamales

or whatever the weather is going to just kind of mix nicely with whatever you got on the menu. let's take it outside right now to that microclimate forecast. and you can see here we have been tracking some fog today. we're still looking at a few areas with some reduced visibilities, but generally we've seen some of the worst of that fog clearing out right now here in napa where one and a quarter mile visibility down to two miles here in half moon bay, and we still could see some areas of fog reforming as we roll through the next couple of be careful tonight. if you goto to run to the grocery store or whatnot, you might get some of that fog kind of catching up on you, creeping up on you rather pretty fast here. otherwise, as we move through tomorrow, what we're seeing is this windy pattern setting up, and that's going to clear out any kind of fog across the bay area. we have high pressure over the pacific, low pressure in southern california. that's a classic recipe to get some gusty winds, because air flows from high pressure to low pressure. so it's just really going to dive down across northern california.
6:19 pm
and we'll find the strongest winds right around this area of low pressure. so unfortunately for r southern california, they could see wind gusts 60 plus miles per hour. not that gusty here for us, but in the mountains we could get into that 40 to 50 mile per hour range. although i think for most of our lower elevations here in the valleys, we would range anywhere from 15 to 45, so on and off gusts, but sustained or steady wind 10 to 20. i don't see any red flag fire warnings just because we have had some recent rains. but all in all, be careful. if you are doing any traveling with some of this wind, you'll see right here as we roll through tomorrow. it's anywhere from 15 to about 30mph. coming out of the north and the east. we'd stay with some of that gusty wind here through tomoow afternoon and evening. and then by the time we get to wednesday morning, that wind will be calming on down morning temperatures. well, we're going to start off here with lots of 40s throughout the bay area, and the mostly sunny skies will be a
6:20 pm
nice break after all of that thick fog. we're down here to 47 in the peninsula. south bay. got you at 48 right over to the east bay 47 as well, and some upper 40s here in the north bay. let's take you to those daytime highs down here across south bay. you're coming in at 65. in cupertino, 66 in gilroy. temperatures pretty much the same out here across the east bay. 67 in vallejo, 64 there in danville right up to daly city, 64 and some mid 60s inn palo alto, san francisco, 65 in downtown and right up across the north bay, 62 in clear lake. on the 7-day forecast, we are looking at some sun moving back in as we head through the next couple of days, and once again, that any kind of wind will be out of here as we head through wednesday's forecast. so lots of nice weather ahead for you to get going on that tom daley now that you've been out, outed yourself. yes. being a tim walz denier. all right. you guys will get to melissa on february 2nd.
