right now at 11, it is starting to pick up. a wind advisory is in effect for several parts of the bay area tonight. but it's what's brewing in southern california that has so many people concerned right now. a potentially life threatening wind storm is on the way. we're talking about wind gusts up to 100 miles an hour. and right now at least six bay area cal fire engines are headed down south to help. they'll be ready to react if a wildfire breaks out. we haven't got much rain or precipitation, so now we're sitting in a dangerous spot. when? when the santa ana's come, the temperatures warm, the humidities are low. unnerving conditions for sure. yeah. let's get right to chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. and, jeff, you've been watching this windstorm. yeah. and i bet a lot of folks in southern california are going to stay up all night just to make sure if a fire breaks out, they're able to do what they
11:02 pm
need to do. it's just that kind of a situation with those gusts. what we're seeing right now is high pressure building over the pacific. low pressure starting to drop down over nevada. and that's what's helping to pick up this wind through the state. now, right now, it's not extremely bad for us. it's calm to about ten miles per hour. but you can see some of the bright colors in the central valley. that's some of the wind that is developing, with some gusts up to about 40mph. now, i do anticipate tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon and evening. we'll get some on and off gusts 15 to 45. a steady wind 10 to 20. and the top risk will be in the mountains 500ft and above. so even though we've had this wind, we've also thankfully had some rainfall recently. so that's helping us out on that fire danger front. but it's the opposite situation in southern california. look at these red flag fire warnings and wind warnings all through socal. with those gusts out of the northeast up to 100mph. again, the national weather service is calling this a particularly dangerous situation. they save
11:03 pm
that terminology only for a handful of events. sustained winds up to about 50. no big rain chances the next two weeks. and one last thing about socal here los angeles rain sean only 16 hundredths of an inch since october. they should have 4.68in by now. i've got more looks at all of this coming up. another check in about ten minutes. all right, jeff, thank you. new charges tonight for a notorious bay area kidnaper. he is now being tied to another kidnaping. and the police chief of seaside is being credited with helping to crack the case. matthew mueller was convicted in the 2015 so-called gone girl kidnaping in vallejo. the details were so unbelievable that police initially accused the victim, denise huskins, of making the whole thing up. mueller was ultimately linked to the crime and arrested. he is currently serving 40 years. last month, he was charged with two other home invasions in the south bay. that happened before the gone girl case, and now he's being tied to yet another kidnaping in the east bay. investigators say mueller held
11:04 pm
three people at a home i in san ramon in april of 2015, demanding one of them withdraw tens of thousands of dollars from their bank. police say after he got the money, he let them go. investigators claim mueller confessed to new crimes last year during letters he exchanged with seaside police chief. and here are the cases. authorities are tying mueller to a home invasion in mountain view in september 2009. then in october, another home invasion in palo alto. back in march 2015, the vallejo gone girl kidnaping of denise haskins. and tonight we are learning charges have been filed against mueller for a kidnap for ransom in san ramon. just one month later in april. and then in june, a home invasion in dublin. and there will be a news conference tomorrow in seaside in monterey county. investigators are expected to announce new information related to the charges against mueller. we will be there and we'll bring you the very latest. new at 11. what was he up to tonight? a castro

valley man is in jail facing felony charges for trying to break into the stanford linear accelerator center. now, this attempted burglary happened around 830 last night. sand hill road in menlo park, san mateo county sheriff's deputies say its k-9 unit helped catch the man as he ran off toward 280. when deputies got to the scene, they found bolt cutters, damaged security fence and other burglary tools. no word yet on why that suspect wanted to break into that national science research lab. we are following breaking news overseas tonight. a powerful earthquake has rocked a mountainous region of western china near the nepal border. the usgs says it was a magnitude 7.1. the epicenter in the tibet region, many houses near the epicenter collapsed and some people are reportedly trapped. at least 53 people have died and dozens of others have been injured, according to chinese state media. while the first person reported to have had a severe case of the bird flu in the united states has now died from that virus. the 65 year old

man from louisiana. pardon me. 65 year old from louisiana had underlying medical condition, as is believed to have been exposed by a backyard flock of birds. at least 67 cases have been reported in ten states, including 37 here in california. the majority of the patients became sick after being exposed to infected cattle orr poultry. most patients, though, have had relatively mild flu symptoms, and public health officials haven't found any evidence that the virus spreads from human to human. however, the cdc says samples of the virus from the deadly case in louisiana showed signs of mutations that could make it more transmissible to humans. this case in louisiana is hopefully isolated right now. it's a different strain from what the dairy workers have had in california. and but it illustrates that the virus can do more serious things and cause us to be very ill now. doctor peter chin hong's advice is to
11:07 pm
get vaccinated for the regular flu. he says, also don't handle sick or dead animals, including birds, even cats. don't drink unpasteurized dairy products. well, the next person who could lead oakland is no stranger to it. former east bay congresswoman barbara lee could be announcing her intent to run for oakland mayor soon. a 2025 campaign finance filing for lee california secretary of state website, signaling a potential run. nbc bay area's jocelyn moran talked with oakland city and community leaders jocelyn moran gia. former congresswoman barbara lee is a name many are familiar with in oakland, and some are happy to hear she could potentially be running. but as oakland mayor, she would be inheriting a number of issues, including a large budget deficit. we'll let you know when i make a decision on this next chapter, which is going to be a very exciting next chapter. former congresswoman barbara lee talking about her future last week in an interview with our velena jones. she spent 26 years in congress, seven years in the
11:08 pm
california legislature, and 11 years working for the late congressman ron dellums. and now she could be eyeing a run for oakland's next mayor. lee ran for one of california's senate seat, but lost in the primaries last year, and former oakland mayor sheng thao was just recalled a few weeks ago. and you put those two things together and she becomes a pretty viable candidate. a 2025 campaign finance filing for lee was posted on t california secretary of state website, signaling a potential run. a spokesperson would only say that lee plans to make a public announcement about running soon, but it has both people in the community and city leaders excited for the possibility. for one, she's just wildly popular in the bay area, and so she has roots in northern california. the city of oakland is facing a number of issues, including a roughly $130 million budget deficit. but councilmember carroll fife believes lee could help the city move forward. i think he has the administrative experience and executive chops to be successful, helping
11:09 pm
navigate the city of oakland through these challenging budgetary experiences that we're having right now. i definitely feel that she has oakland's best interests in mind. oakland business owner justin ford says he believes lee could bring people together, and top of mind for him is the housing crisis and public safety. as a business owner, business security, oakland has a lot of businesses on the brink. oakland is obviously dealing with a lot of break-ins and things that are going on that can't be ignored. so as a business owner trying to find solutions that we can operate safely within the city is definitely high on my list. political analyst larry gerston says lee has spent a lot of time in washington, something the opposition could try to use against her. but with her time there, she knows how to get things done in terms of getting aid, federal aid. she probably will have a much better chance of getting that federal aid, especially with folks like adam schiff in the senate. than somebody else. and so far, in addition to lee, 13 people have filed papers sigignaling a
11:10 pm
potential run. the new mayor of oakland will be selected in a special april 15th election. gia. well, meanwhile, oakland's new interim mayor and city council were sworn in today. newly appointed council president kevin jenkins will now serve as oakland's interim mayor, and council member noel gayo will take over as council president. outgoing councilmember rebecca kaplan was also appointed to take over the district two seat that was vacated by new county supervisor nikki fortunato bas. three new council members were also sworn in. antioch police are investigating the city's first deadly shooting of the year. it happened this morning just before 1030, officers got a call about a shooting on rockford drive. when they got there, they found a 26 year old man on the ground with gunshot wounds. he later died at the hospital. police have not released his identity and are actively investigating that shooting. if you know anything, you are urged to call antioch pd. well, a huge victory for tens of thousands of lgbtq plus military veterans. the pentagon now says it will
11:11 pm
restore their discharge records to honorable, ending a class action suit filed more than a year ago by veterans outed under the military's don't ask, don't tell policy. nbc bay area's thom jensen talked to one of the plaintiffs in that case, who says this means a lot more than just access to benefits. i feel like like on the inside now. i feel like i feel whole. lily stephanie was one of the named plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit filed in 2023, asking the military to systematically upgrade discharges f service members kicked out for sexual orientation. for decades, the records of tens of thousands of lgbtq plus veterans read. other than honorable. now, the pentagon has agreed to do that systematically upgrade the status of discharged veterans like lily to honorable and provide their benefits. i feel like like like some shackles just came off of me. i feel like i've been been shackled to this, to this discharge for 30 years.
11:12 pm
in 1988, just two years after enlisting in the navy, lily was outed under the department of defense don't ask, don't tell policy, thrown behind bars and denied proper food and water for two days. a short time later, lily was booted from the navy under the military's homosexual conduct policy and dod recorords obtained by her investigative unit showed more than 32,000 were thrown out since 1980 and more than 100,000 since world war two. the discharge records said lily was homosexual and their discharge status was other than honorable. the number one benefit for me is having the homosexual part removed from the discharge. you know, i'm a member of the lgbtq and there's no age or not. and that's just what lily will get. under this agreement. all veterans discharged before 2011 due to sexual orientation will be able to get new records reflecting honorable discharges with no
11:13 pm
mention of sexual orientation. and we have heard from our clients that this feels like they are finally getting a release. thathey are finally can look and be a part of the veteran community. laurie rifkin, one of the lead attorneys on this case, says this will also open up all sorts of benefits for those veterans beyond medical. this impacted the ability to get assistance with housing, which of course is also very crucial for veterans. the ability to get military education paid for the gi bill, the ability to receive things that are really meaningful to people who served like a military funeral. these changes should be available to veterans this coming summer in san francisco. thom jensen, nbc, bay area news. we're back in 60s ahead. survivors of abuse are calling on a bay area archbishop to release a list of priests accused of carrying out that abuse. other local dioceses have done it. so why hasn't san francisco. we investigate. also, this might be in your medicine

refusal to release a list of suspected predator priests. now one victim is going public about a living priest who she says groomed and abused her for years. senior investigative reporter bigad shaban has the latest from the church's ongoing scandal. i went through just about everything that you can imagine. outside saint mary's cathedral, men and women recalled sexual abuse they say they endured as children at the hands of priests inside the san francisco archdiocese. the ongoing risk to children is too
11:16 pm
great to be silent. they're now demanding san francisco's archbishop follow in the footsteps of every other diocese in the state and release its own list of priests deemed by the church itself as credibly accused of committing sexual abuse against children. if you don't have a list, it's just the absence of the truth. sandra oldfield is one of two women who filed official complaints with the vatican today, demanding san francisco archbishop salvatore cordileone be removed from his position in light of what they describe as serious inaction. oldfield says her abuse began when she was just 15 by a priest in her youth group that was grooming. i mean, that was setting me up that whole time for a sexual relationship all throughout my teen years and beyond. and so it was just rape. that happened over a lot of years. the priest is accused. reverend laurence finnigan did not respond to our request for comment. oldfield says she first reported the abuse to the archdiocese more than 30 years ago, but tells us it was only
11:17 pm
after a recent meeting with archdiocese officials that finnigan was stripped of his ability to practice as a priest. oldfield has a pending lsuit against the archdiocese, and also says she reported the abuse to police decades ago, but finnigan was never criminally charged. while the san francisco archdiocese hasn't released a list of accused priests on its website, it does list priests in good standing. finnigan's name is no longer on it. attorney jeff anderson, who has represented thousands of victims in lawsuits against the catholic church, blame san francisco's archbishop for what he describes as a lack of transparency and your refusal to release a list and to keep these secrets and protect these offenders is diabolical. the archdiocese of san francisco wouldn't comment on any specific allegations, but in a statement told us it takes sexual abuse accusations seriously, adding that it aims to protect the rights of all alleged victims and alleged abusers, which is why the
11:18 pm
archdiocese says releasing a list of all priests accused of sexual abuse would be unjust. for those who are falsely accused. they say that because they're more interested in protecting their reputation and the offenders than they are having the truth known about the peril that exists. and why is it that this archbishop and this diocese is the only in california that hasn't released a list, at least of those they deem credibly accused that they deem bigad? siobhan. nbc bay area news. we investigate. ultimate fighting ceo dana white is joining the board of meta. a longtime friend of president elect donald trump, the announcement comes just two weeks before trump's second administration begins. meta ceo mark zuckerberg posted on facebook, saying white has built the ufc into one of the most

valuable, fastest growing and most popular sports enterprises in the world. and we have previously reported about zuckerberg's growing involvement with mixed martial arts, with him attending several ufc events. fresh dungeness crab is now on the menu at bay area restaurants, but it's not going to come cheap. san francisco restaurants got their first shipments of local crab last night. this comes over a two month delay in california's commercial crabbing season. usually it starts in november, but the season had to be postponed to protect migrating whales from getting tangled in crab gear because of high demand. limited catches. the price of crab is expected to be higher, much higher than previous years. and if they were out on the bay today, jeff, they were dealing with a lot of fog. yeah, it's been pretty thick. we got a little break here as we went through the afternoon, but some of that fog. it is now coming back out here into san francisco. we're looking at visibilities at a mile. half moon bay is the worst. zero mile visibility. so please be careful if you're doing any traveling, especially from san francisco right down to the peninsula. now
11:20 pm
we'll see all of ts fog clear out of here as we get into that windy weather set up starting tomorrow morning. also into tomorrow afternoon as this area of high pressure. we're going to see that air funnel from high pressure to low pressure in southern california. and again, socal is looking at winds up to 100mph. not nearly as gusty for us. so let's go ahead and get you details here in that microclimate forecast on where we're going to be situated on that wind tomorrow morning. and i see this coming out of the north and the east. it's a very dry direction. so humidity is going to lower and overall winds are 15 to 30mph. so thankfully we've had some rain recently. and that's why right now we're not under a red flag. fire warnings. but still again, some on and off gusts right through tomorrow afternoon and evening. most of the populated areas 15 to 30 some of the mountains could get up to 40, 45. we'd see any wind. get out of here as we head into wednesday morning. so a quick event for us, but it's going to last probably about two days, maybe a little more down there towards southern
