tuesday morning. good morning to you all. i'm marcus washington 2025. here we are. all right i'm laura garcia. we're going to check that morning commute with mike because a lot of folks head back to work this week. all right. and what about those conditions outside kari? it's very windy in some spots, and we are starting out with some slightly warmer temperatures. here's a live look outside in walnut creek. in fact, yesterday this was a much different picture where we had low visibility in the fog. but now that the wind has picked up, it's mixing out a lot of the fog and also keeping our temperatures up. we're in the low 50s right now in danville. it is 58 in san francisco and 59 in santa rosa. as we take a look at what to expect today in livermore, lots of sunshine and temperatures going from upper 40s to low 60s. today we are going to be a little bit warmer than it was yesterday, with a high of 64 expected inan jose, as well as 66 in oakland and up to 64 in fairfield this afternoon. mike, you're seeing the commute is back. it's back and the wind is not mixing this out. this is just continuing to

build. right on typical timing though here. 601 at the bay bridge toll plaza with the metering lights turned on just about 535 540. they're slowing on the span, slowing down through richmond. and now the build toward the richmond bridge heading west. same thing for highway 37 out of vallejo and highway four coming into concord. your typical patterns here. no surprises. we're looking at a build for the east bay. just a subtle one for the nimitz heading south from 238. and in the south bay, we do have north 101 showing some slowing. vasco road, bills to 25 minutes. now just about back to you. mike. well, we are following some breaking news this morning. you see right there. this is video showing the moment of that powerful earthquake striking in western china. this was a 7.1 quake happening about 13 hours ago, centered near one of tibet's holiest cities, also near the border of nepal. there are now nearly 100 confirmed deaths, with reports of more people trapped. just into our newsroom, authorities in florida investigating the discovery of

two bodies found inside the landing gear compartment of a jetblue airplane. the plane landed last night at the airport in fort lauderdale. crews made the discovery during a routine post-flight maintenance inspection. the people have not been identified, but the airline issued a statement that reads in part, this is a heartbreaking situation and we are committed to working closely with authorities to support their efforts to understand how this occurred. this morning, a notorious, notorious bay area kidnaper is facing new accusations in yet another kidnaping today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us from the newsroom this morning with more on those mounting charges. chris. well, good morning to you, marcus and laura. matthew mueller is already behind bars serving 40 years for kidnaping. and yet today, investigators in seaside in monterey county will detail how their investigation led to another alleged crime in san ramon. that same year, you might remember mueller from the 2015 kidnaping of denise huskins
6:04 am
in vallejo, mullin, entered her boyfriend's home, zip tied him, then kidnaped huskins for $1,700 ransom when she escaped two days later and was found 400 miles away in huntington beach. vallejo police accused the couple of making the whole thing up. huskins later sued vallejo police for defamation. now, mullens is connected to another kidnaping for ransom in san ramon. abobout a mon after that huskins case in 2015. in all, mullens is linked to five cases from a home invasion in mountain view in 2009. in october of that year, another home invasion in palo alto. then in 2015, his behavior escalated into that kidnap for ransom of denise huskins in march. the new alleged kidnaping inn san ramon in april, and then a home invasion in dublin in june. all of this in 2015. this morning, denise huskins quinn and her husband, along with law enforcement from seaside, alameda county and el doradado county will all give the latest

details on how this new case is connected to the old cases, and we'll bring that to you later on today, laura. all right. interesting one. thank you. chris. 604 right now. new requests from attorneys on both sides means the man accused of gunning down unitedhealthcare ceo will not likely be back in court before mid-february. the judge yesterday agreed to extend the indictment deadline for murder suspect luigi mangione. the new deadline is february 17th. prosecutors in mangione's defense team are now suggesting more time is needed to prepare for the trial. mangione will enter a plea once his indictment is returned. president biden and the first lady waking up in southern california this morning. the pair arriving at lax last night. this is after visiting new orleans following last week's terror attack. today, the president is expected to visit the eastern coachella valley. he is scheduled to announce the creation of a monument south of joshua tree national park. the president is also expecting to sign a proclamation that would make

drilling, mining and other energy and industrial related activities illegal in that area. 605 right now, san francisco leadership is changing this week as a new mayor takes office. daniel lowry will be sworn in tomorrow. one event is planned for tonight. ahead of that, lowry is scheduled to attend an interfaith unity service at congregation emanuel. tomorrow's ceremony is planned for 11:30 a.m. in civic center plaza at 530. a celebration will be held in chinatown, and that event will include a night market and community festival. we will have special coverage tomorrow of the mayoral inauguration. you can watch live on nbc bay area at 11:30 a.m, as well as on all of our streaming platforms including roku, pluto and nbc. bay area.com. bay area firefighters on their way now down to southern california. with the growing fire threat due to high winds, potentially life threatening wind, storm conditions may be on the way.
6:07 am
those wind gusts approaching 100 miles an hour. right now, at least six bay area cal fire engines are heading down to help. here is a post from ccu unit based in santa clara. now teams are planning to be on standby in the event of a wildfire. meteorologist kari hall, of course. been monitoring all of that now. kari, when are we expecting some of the most severe conditions to start up down there? yeah, i think we'll see it continuing over the next 24 hours. and this wind advisory for the bay area will be in effect until 10:00 tomorrow morning. and this is highlighting pretty much everyone except for the very low lying areas of santa clara valley. but take a look at where we are, where we stand currently. the highest wind gusts right now, mount saint helena at 74mph right now. so in the upper elevations, the wind is just roaring. and for the spots like mount diablo, it's at 47, while the valleys are at
6:08 am
about 15 to 20mph for socal. we're seeing this disturbance that's moving through, creating those high winds, but also bringing in a little bit of rain. and that's where we are going to see those highest wind gusts moving through spots like malibu as well as calabasas. you can see there on the map there, those winds picking up 40, 50, 60mph, with the peak of the winds happening tomorrow morning and it's starting to wind down late tomorrow evening. so it will be windy at least through tomorrow afternoon for socal here in the bay area, we'll start to see thohose windsalming down a little bit sooner as early as tomorrow morning, so we'll continue to monitor that. mike's been looking around the bay area to see where you can fill up for a little bit less. yeah, things did change slightly yesterday i believe during the day and overnight. the lows we started with yesterday mostly. rose will start in contra costa county today with the low of 355 in concord which was yesterday's low. it's the lowest we have today. bond fair market on willow pass road. that price was yesterday's high. again as i mentioned on our list in the

south bay, we're going to call out cupertino's low of 363 at great gas on north deanza boulevard and in the north bay, marin county's lowest. that's in san anselmo. 377 at farrar auto on sir francis drake boulevard. check for the changes that might be in your area. maybe this is the first day you're heading back this new year. go to gasbuddy.com and check those gas prices around you on the roadway. we have evidence of a lot more folks heading back to the office, though we have your typical slower patterns that are developing. altamont pass has not been a problem. vasco road actually better than it was yesterday with early slowing, but there is a crash affecting some folks that will be over at mountain house and grantline a critical intersection there, as folks may be heading out from tracy over in toward the rest of the bay area. the south bay, slowing the first bursts did ease up on 101, but this burst is here to stay. the bay bridge toll plaza. back to you. everybody's back. a fast track scam is on the rise, but it's actually been around for a while. coming up at 625, our consumer team updates what state

all right. thanks, scott. all right. keeping an eye on things to watch these days. well, happening tonight. deal or no deal. island returns to nbc bay area. and this year, the reality tv game show is really upping the stakes. how many of you did your homework? you studied? yes. good. now throw it away. oh, yikes. because just when you think you have the answers, the banker changes the questions. oh, yeah. this season sees the introduction of a mysterious new banker. although joe manganiello won't say who he is, he did say they have ties to the franchise's legacy. i spoke with the magic mike star turned host ahead of tonight's season premiere. he says fans of reality tv can expect to see some familiar faces returning to tv as part of the competition. we have former survivor champion and parvati shallow, the black widow. one of the great survivor champions of all time. you've got the greatest big brother champion of all time, doctor will, making his return to

6:18 am
we'll let them explain this part. i caught him from the bakery line because i wasn't sure you know who he was or anything. give me some sugar. pops up. i didn't order anything. i'm thinking, like, why? then i heard a voice, and i'm like, miss lenore. like. yeah, like miss lenore, like. yeah. i'm like. i'm like, this is for mars. so, wait, are you two just screaming at each other on the phone, screaming? you're just like, screaming. it was a lot of, oh my god, like, oh my goodness no. well, they knew each other. wow. okay. so lenore says she gave him up for adoption, in large part because she was just 17 and believing she disappointed her parents by becoming pregnant. more recently, she contracted breast cancer, and the business took its toll. and now the maher runs that bakery full time after training late at night. isn't
6:19 am
that a crazy story? right there? right there all the time. amazing. and i wonder if i always wonder if maybe those tastes felt, like, familiar to him. yeah. a little bit of sugar. yeah, that's. that's cool. that's good. that's good. i hope he had his bill paid up because mom will take care of that. all right. kari is taking care of the weather for us today. yeah, we're starting out with some gusty winds this morning. it's still going to be windy through tomorrow morning. and we are under a wind advisory across the bay area. probably hearing those winds picking up outside of the door right now, and we could see it possibly topping 50mph, mainly in the hills. but along the coast, those high winds are going to build up some big waves and we will be under a beach hazard statement in effect through later today with possibly some 20 foot waves. right now they're running at about 8 to 10ft, but may get more dangerous as the day progresses. looking at our high temperatures, we're in the mid 60s. this is well above normal. we're usually in the
6:20 am
upper 50s this time of year. we're going to see a high of 65 in cupertino and 66 in oakland, while vallejo will see a high of 63 degrees. also 63 in pleasanton for redwood city, also 63 degrees, and san francisco, making it up to 65 downtown and a light wind. lots of sunshine. but once again, we are going to see in some spots at different times of the day. it may become quite gusty as we look ahead to when are we going to get some rain again? it's going to be a while. in fact, the storm track lifting to the north, all of the storms moving north and east of here. but when we take a look at the month of january, usually this is when we get the most amount of rainfall. seeing that we haven't had a significant storm yet, and there is none on the horizon for at least the next week. well, we start to get a little concerned because we usually get about 60% of our average rainfall throughout the year between december through february. and while santa rosa is really at a good standing, we don't need any
6:21 am
rain there or in san francisco. we are still lacking south of the golden gate bridge, so we do need some rain here as we are now starting to run some deficits. looking at santa r ro, after we had all of those atmospheri rivers, they were at three times the normal amount. now that's dropped to about double the amount of the average rainfall for the water year. and we may see those numbers going down even more as we don't have any more rain coming in at least through next monday, and temperatures running slightly above what's normal for this time of year. we're expecting more of the same in san francisco. mike, you're seeing some change now at the berkeley curve. yeah, right here we see some slowing as folks head west on the nimitz or on the east shore freeway and over toward the bay bridge. there's a little slowing at the split, the volume increasing for folks heading down through oakland as well. so we're looking at westbound 80, your commute direction. more slowing again through richmond. those sensors tell the same story. more folks crossing over from richmond to san rafael. that's the push right that direction over toward the left side of the screen, westbound

6:26 am
he's far from alone. fast track says it logged 3000 calls about it. the attorney general's office just posted a bulletin saying there's a significant increase in these texts. the ag's office said this scam is designed to deceive drivers into entering banking or credit card information into a website. and once scammers have that, they can go to town running up credit card charges or draining your debit card. so please don't click the link. do what ed did. i didn't respond, i reported it as i took a picture of the text, and then i deleted it and reported it as junk. bottom line this text message is a scam. hopefully saying it a third time is a charm, but let's work on that together. please tell your friends spread the word so you don't have to hear me issue the warning a fourth time. frank, mary, cynthia, bridget, jenny, joe and others contacted us online. you can to snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form

and so now we're sitting in a dangerous spot when the santa ana's come and the temperatures warm, the humidities are low right now at 630. dangerous fire weather. parts of southern california are under a red flag warning. we're tracking the condions and the help now arriving from the bay area. the first deadly case of bird flu raises new concerns. two things local experts say you can do to lower the risk for you and your family. and a possible step forward in the potential sale of the coliseum. the key vote expected today that may help ease oakland's budget crunch. this is today in the bay. 630 on your tuesday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus
6:31 am
washington. want to get right to our top story this morning for you. gusty winds whipping across parts of california. that includes a large chunk of the bay area and the santa cruz mountains. but in southern california, we're talking about the potential life threatening wind storm. teams there from the bay area are now on their way to help firefighters. meteorologist kari hall is leading our team coverage this morning. you've been tracking conditions up and down the coast. yeah, we are seeing some really high winds for southern california, and it's breezy here in the bay area. we are under a wind advisory and that continues through tomorrow morning for pretty much everyone, only excluding santa clara valley and areas farther to the north for lake and mendocino counties. as we take a look at where we stand right now, we are seeing in mount diablo wind gusts at 39mph. it's right now at 66, in mount saint helena, and we've seen in the valleys about 15 to 20 mile per hour winds. but then as we move it down to socal, where we are seeing the showers
6:32 am
and even some snow showers for the upper elevations, developing, that offshore wind continues and it will be very gusty today, turning extremely dry as we see the humidity levels dropping and winds increasing to possibly 70mph, maybe even higher for some of those spots going through tomorrow morning. you can see for santa clarita we could see 70 mile per hour winds. so very critical conditions. so as we head over to today in the bay ginger conejero saab, you're you have more info on the local help heading down to the southern california area? that's right. kari good morning to you. and those folks down in southern california are going to be happy with that help here from our bay area crews, because we're already monitoring a small fire in riverside county. it's burning an acre at this point, but it does have potential to burn up to 20 acres. just one of the small kind of warnings, i guess, that were that you can say from these high winds and the extreme fire danger, we're
6:33 am
also feeling some of those gusty conditions here in pacifica this morning, but definitely a far cry from what folks are seeing down south. that is where potentially life threatening windstorms are expected or may be on the way. the national weather service says strong santa ana winds will pick up there starting today in parts of santa barbara, los angeles and ventura counties. those wind gusts forecasted up to 90 miles an hour. that may last for a few days. and that is where our local crews are giving a hand. at least six bay area cal fire engines ready to add additional resources to an already all hands on deck situation. we also have all of our units down here in san diego, riverside, san bernardino that have staffing patterns. no one's going home. we're staffing all our extra engines. it's all hands on deck for this wind event. well, not long ago, back in november and december of last year, we saw fires burn hot and fast in
6:34 am
ventura and in malibu. now, by this time this year or by this time of year, i should say fire danger down in southern california is typically winding down. but that area has not had any measurable rainfall in several months. so the combination of those high winds and very dry conditions mean extreme fire danger. as carey talks about very often now, gusty winds here in the bay area, less of a fire danger because we have seen some of that rain. but kari is also mentioned in her forecast that were going to be clear for the next for some time. so we'll be keeping a close eye on that. we're live in pacifica, ginger conejero saab today in the bay keeping a close eye indeed because wewe know thgs could change. drop of a dime. all right. thanks, ginger. well, this morning, the cdc health leaders there confirming the first human death from the bird flu. the unidentified senior lived in louisiana and had underlying medical conditions. they were believed to have been infected from a backyard flock of birds. just under 70 cases have been recorded in ten
6:35 am
states, with about half of them here in california. most have become infected from affiliated cattle or poultry, and most of those cases are mild. so far, there are no evidence right now of the virus that can be spread from human to human. but cdc leaders also say samples from the louisiana patients show signs of mutations that may ultimately lead to the virus becoming transmissible between people. experts do recommend that if you haven't already done so just yet, get the flu vaccination and never handle sick or dead animals, including birds or even cats. well, happening today, antioch leaders are expected to announce a new acting police chief. the current interim chief, brian addington, is retiring again. he actually came out of retirement last year for a temporary takeover. the choice to replace him on an interim basis is not yet known. this all follows a recent agreement to move the department past the racist text messaging scandal. last friday, the city actually reached a settlement
6:36 am
with the justice department, and that includes a plan to hire an outside consultant within 90 days, along with a community engagement liaison. 6.35 for you right now, in just a few hours, the sale of the iconic oakland coliseum could take a major step forward towards completion. today in the bay's. bob redell joins us now. and bob, the city desperately needs this money from the sale, but it's been held up for weeks. it has. good morning to laura and marcus. we are talking about $125 million for the city of oakland, which would help the city balance its $129 million budget deficit. but in order for this deal to go through, the buyer of the coliseum wants sign off from alameda county first. which brings us to today. later this morning, the alameda county board of supervisors will vote on whether or not to approve the a's portion of the coliseum sale to the african american sports and entertainment group, which has been co-founded by ray bobbitt. now, the asg offered $250 million for the coliseum,
6:37 am
125 of that going to the city of oakland, the other 125 for the a's. but this past november, bobbitt's organization missed a payment deadline to the city of oakland because its investors have been waiting for county supervisors to approve the a's half of the sale. without that money, the city of oakland has already had to revise its budget and make cuts to key programs. here's new oakland city council member for district seven, ken houston, who says he met with ray bobbitt on sunday. i believe in that coliseum deal is going to work. from the numbers that i saw, from what i know personally, some of the council members don't believe it. they think it was smokescreen. i thought it used to be smoke because of how it was moving. but after my meeting with ray bobbitt yesterday, i believe in that deal. they told me to go there. yesterday. oakland firefighters stood on the steps of city hall and urged all sides to finish the sale of the oakland coliseum to bring that money into oakland so the city can reopen. the two fire stations temporarily closed
6:38 am
yesterday to help with oakland's budget gap. the parties involved in the sale have told us before they're confident this deal will go through eventually. reporting live bob redell today in the bay. thank you bob. 637 this morning as we take a live look out on san jose. yes. it's beautiful. it really is beautiful there. let's take a trip. where are we going? over to meteorologist kari hall. i was like, you just got. you met like downtown san jose. we just continue down first street, right? all right. here's a live look outside in dublin as we get started. it is a clear view. we haven't seen the issues with fog due to the wind really picking up here in the past few hours. that's also warming up temperatures. so we're starting out our morning in the upper 50s for a lot of spots. concord is now at 56 degrees and it is 60 in san jose. but in between, in the valleys where the wind is a lot calmer, temperatures are lower. let's take a look at san rafael. we're in the low 50s

now, and we are going to see the temperatures making it into the mid 60s. overall a really nice day, but we will have to watch out for those high winds that may bring down some tree branches and also cause some issues with power. so we'll continue to watch out for that. mike, you've got some changes now in the east bay. yeah, at the toll plaza. i thought this was going to stay consistent with all lanes filled all morning. but i did see a little break. there may be someone who hit the brakes farther back. it looks like the lanes are filling in once again. the toll plaza. no change for the metering. lights. still on and still buildingng off theast shore freeway. the issue out of out of character would be eastbound 24. i'm concerned about a motorcycle crash at gateway east 24 outside the caldecott, but again, a motorcycle is involved. i'll track that carefully just to make sure it's not an extended issue or any major injuries over in the city. we have looking forward toward chase center. the warriors play tonight, so there will be that traffic off of the 280 extension over toward chase center. the warriors way over here. 1a1 way traffic control for highway one over the course of the day for project and overnight the closure for east

back. it is 642. president elect donald trump says a report about classified documents should stay a secret. scott mcgrew. we know that trump won't be prosecuted in that case, but the report still could be released. it could be released as soon as today. that report, put together by special counsel jack smith. trump absolutely does not want it to come out. lawyers for the trump side say it will be one sided and slanted, which of course it would be, considering it's a blueprint for the prosecution. they would have used it had the case gone forward. the case has been suspended because the justice
6:44 am
department has a policy. you can't prosecute a sitting president. trump had been accused of taking classified documents out of the white house, storing them in part in one of his bathrooms, and then denying he had them when the national archives asked for them back, only to be discovered by the fbi executing a search warrant that they were there. smith will send the report to attorney general garland today. it's up to garland to decide whether to release it. the judge in trump's bank fraud case says he will not move forward, or he will move forward with sentencing this friday, but he has indicated he will not sentence trump to jail. he will instead sign an unconditional discharge. president elect trump, meantime, says he'll make an economic announcement from his mar a lago home this morning. these announcements tend to wander into other subjects. we'll bring you the highlights in our midday news congress. meantime, getting ready for president trump by writing a single massive bill in order to pass all of his priorities all at once. here's

republican speaker johnson, who's in charge of that. we had long work sessions over the weekend with all the house republicans on that point, and we are going to get that job done. so some people like the one bill strategy, some people like the two bill strategy. we will work that out. i mean, dialog this morning with senator thune. and the two houses will get together and we'll get it done. the consumer financial protection bureau this morning will move to make medical debt separate from your credit rating. that's $49 billion owed by more than 15 million americans. it's not that americans weren't repaying the debt. it was that the medical payments were counting against people's overall debt. so if you owed $100,000 after a car accident that was $100,000, the mortgage company wouldn't lend you for a house. president biden and the first lady were in new orleans monday, meeting with families who lost loved ones in that terror attack. 14 people died. the president spoke at a

non-denominational memorial service as well. i know events like this are hard, and the shock and pain is still so very raw. my wife jill and i are here to stand with you, to grieve with you, to pray with you, to let you know you are not alone. the rest of the nation is looking at you as well. the president and first lady are in the la area. this morning, the president will declare a section of federal land near coachella as protected land just south of joshua tree, as well as a section in california up near clear lake. marcus. good to know. thanks, scott. well, turning now to a huge victory for tens of thousands of lgbtq plus military veterans. the pentagon will restore records to reflect they were honorably discharged. now that move ends a class action lawsuit filed more than a year ago. the veterans claim that they were outed under the military's don't ask, don't tell policies. the pentagon's
6:47 am
move means that this will now allow them to receive benefits. we did speak with one military veteran who is overjoyed by the decision. i feel like like like some shackles just came off of me. i feel like i've been been shackled to this, to this discharge for 30 years. for years, the veterans discharge of the lead attorneys in thise case says that this will also open up other benefits for the group, including housing, education, and the ability to receive a military funeral. it is 646 teachers statewide are awaiting the release of a new report on education salaries. a private firm conducted the survey spotlighting wages in the rising cost of living. more than 2000 public school teachers took part. union leaders are also planning to hold a virtual news conference at noon to present the findings. well, trending this morning. grab your popcorn. two bay area sports legends are going head to head in san francisco today to determine who

rules the pickleball court. yeah, we're talking about former 49ers terrell owens and nba hall of famer chris mullin. yesterda, they played a round one of their duel at the sports basement in redwood city. today's event takes place at the sports basement at stone town hall mall. that is. both guys love this game. it's one of the fastest, not the fastest growing sport, i think, in america right now. so i'm not terrell owens the football player anymore. i'm terrell owens, the pickleball player. so everybody get your pickleball ready. oh it's going to be fun. first and foremost a lot of fun. but once the game starts, the competitive juices start flowing. so it's going to be a blast. that event also helping promote planned celebrity pickleball bash at warfield. this is going to take place during next month's nba all star weekend. some lucky fans today will win tickets to see that event. that's not fair though. their teammates on it.
6:49 am
those guys are huge. i was gonna say. yeah. i didn't think i'd ever see a team up though between t.o. and molly. yeah. no kidding. right? yeah. but yeah. who plays against them? yeah, exactly. we could take them on. we can do it. stay out of the kitchen. get it down to their shins. yeah. yeah, exactly. ouch! we need a pickleball court in the parking lot. that would be fun. but maybe not today. it's windy. yeah. so the pickleball go.o. just ke on. i'll get it right. it's going to be gusty today. we're already seeing those high winds. take a look at the map and what we're measuring as we speak. now a lot of us in the valleys are getting winds at about 15 to 20mph. not bad, but itt is really gusty wih the wind coming through the delta and over the hills. take a look at mount saint helena. it is now at 64 mile per hour winds that we've seen close to 80 at times this morning. and at mount diablo it's now at 40mph. so around that area you can hear those winds. and where we see the purple, that's our higher elevations. we're getting at
6:50 am
least 50 mile per hour winds this morning, all of this wind piling up someig waves near the coast. and we will be under a beach hazard statement until 9:00 this evening. we may see some of those breakers up to 15 to 20ft right now around santa cruz. they're running at about ten feet. and then looking at some of our inland areas where it will be breezy today, but a lot of sunshine. it's going to be overall a pretty nice day and above normal temperatures. looking ahead, we will wait quite a while before we see another chance of rain in the forecast. in fact, the storm track going well to the north of us and there is not a drop in the rain of drop of rain in the forecast through at least the middle of the month. now we watch these, the forecast these days very closely, because during the month of january, we're usually getting the most amount of rainfall that we get throughout the year. and then for february we start to see a little bit of that rain dropping off. but we get 60% of our rainfall between december and february. we had so much in the
6:51 am
beginning that santa rosa still at a pretty good standing, and also san francisco, is at a surplus for rainfall, but from oakland to livermore to san jose, we are lacking, and only at about 65% of our normal amount of rainfall for oakland. and there is none coming our way, at least for the next week. but at least we can enjoy the mild weather with highs in the low 60s and morning temperatures in the low 40s, and expect about the same in san francisco as well. mike, you're seeing more breaks happening now in the east bay or the effects of it. remember, the bay bridge had that weird backup with the spacing at the toll plaza is kind of the opposite of when the light turns green, folks take off, and then it takes a while for that. go to ripple back. when you hit the breaks, it ripples back through. and that's what we've been seeing here. it came off the berkeley curve. i was watching it build and now spread back, back, back, back over toward powell where things are slowing. things are smoothing out at the berkeley curve at the bay bridge. we do still have all the metering lights and all the backup there, and a slow drive from richmond
6:52 am
typical for the east bay. still watching eastbound 24. the crash reported at gateway. chp has yet to arrive. motorcycle involved there. the rest of the bay looks pretty standard for the build. back to you. thank you mike. it is 651 happening now. castro valley man is in custody accused of trying to break in to the stanford linear accelerator center in menlo park. it happened sunday night. deputies say they arrived before the suspect managed to breach the facility, but they recovered bolt cutters, a damaged security fence and burglary tools. the suspect is also accused of bolting from the scene before a k-9 unit caught up to him. and we're back in just minutes with a look at our top stories this morning, including a man convicted of a notorious bay area kidnaping now being tied to a similar crime. the update from investigators from a different county. plus parts of southern california under a red flag warning, the bay area crews heading down to help. and the hoda celebration continues on the today show right after us
