breaking right now at five devastating wildfires wreaking havoc in southern california, forcing thousands of people to evacuate their homes. many of those homes now destroyed. we have team coverage on the firefighting efforts and the incredibly strong winds, leaving firefighters overwhelmed. new video this morning of an impact from strong overnight winds here in our area as well. we'll have the latest on the damage to multiple cars in the east bay. also honoring jimmy carter. we are live in washington with the last minute preparations ahead of tomorrow's presidential funeral. this is today in the bay. good morning to you. on this wednesday, i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. let's get right to our top story. multiple wildfires now burning in southern california. that includes the palisades fire, which is exploding in size after starting yesterday morning. today in the bay's kris sanchez is in our newsroom this morning monitoring
5:02 am
the damage and the fallout. and, kris, this has been a powerful round of santa ana winds. yeah. so if you're unfamiliar, santa ana winds are much likehe diablo winds that we get up here. you know, they are dry and they are strong. and we know also that more firefighters from the bay area took off overnight for southern california to try to help in that firefight. the alameda county strike team is now joining oakland hayward, fremont firefighters. and while they had a sleepless night, so too did governor newsom, who at 130 this morning announced we are working vigorously to ensure maximum support for firefighting efforts in los angeles. now that includes the hurst fire, now threatening the san fernando valley and the surrounding area. this one started just before 1030 last night, so it hasn't been burning very long, but it forced 44,000 people from their homes. much of southern california, now under a state of emergency. the eaton fire is threatening pasadena and altadena, and that started about
5:03 am
four hours earlier. a threat creating what cal fire calls an immediate threat to life. with people told to leave now, not to get ready, but to leave now. it all started with the palisades fire that you mentioned, which ripped through nearly 3000 acres from the pacific palisades, where it started. it is rugged terrain, and in one case, there's just one way into and out of the canyon there. police told people to leave their cars and to just get out on foot. those vehicles later shoved aside by a bulldozer trying to make way for fire crews. one man described the scene by phone to our sister station in la. palm trees near us started catching on fire, and then some flames came down the hill to the point where there may be like 10 or 15ft away and either a fireman or a policeman. i think it was a policeman started telling everybody, get out of your car if you want to live. the firefight is far from over, with cal fire bracing for more

dangerous fire conditions. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that. and, kari, we know how fast those fires move with winds like that. yeah, and we're getting the peak of those winds right now as we speak this morning. we've seen those winds really picking up in southern california. even the san gabriel mountains, we're currently seeing gusts at 88mph in the chino hills at 67, 66 for rancho cucamonga. and in malibu, it's at 59. mount saint helena in the north bay is also gusting. at this point. we're seeing 66 mile per hour winds. the red flag warning has been extended at least through tomorrow, and we could possibly still see this particularly dangerous situation continue. a look at the current situation. it is now at 56 degrees, very low relative humidity. usually during the overnight hours we see the humidity coming up, but it is still critically dry, along with those winds that are rushing offshore. a look at the satellite radar. there was a
5:05 am
little bit of rain in the area with that low pressure that caused this pressure gradient and those strong winds, but as we go throughout the morning into the afternoon, it is still going to be dangerously high with those wind gusts and gradually starting to calm down later on this evening. so we'll continue to watch that as we also also saw that fire explode. those very strong winds created that rapid rate of spread here in the bay area. it's pretty breezy. we're going to take a look at that coming up in just a few minutes. back to you. all right kari, thank you. and we are also monitoring the wildfires in southern california online. any time. make sure you stay up to date by downloading our free nbc bay area app. and new overnight here in the bay area. strong winds also causing problems and in some cases, toppling trees or utility poles. i want you to check out this video. this is from alameda. you can see right here one tree toppled over on union street. this is near central avenue. one homeowner telling us that two of
5:06 am
his vehicles are damaged. and another case, utility crews are now trying to restore power after a pole fell along clement street street. we are still working to get the exact number of people without power this morning. meanwhile, in oakland, all lanes of highway 13 are open again. this after crews cleared a fallen tree in the southbound direction near redwood road. new video also showing another fallen tree on broadway terrace. this was near southbound 13 exit as of about an hour ago. that street is still off limits. 505 right now, another day of solemn reflection in washington for a leader and a legend. we have a live look in washington, d.c, where mourners are paying their respects to the late president jimmy carter, now lying in state in the u.s. capitol. he will be buried tomorrow afternoon at his home in georgia, following a cathedral. today in the bay'snal chris pollone is live on capitol hill. i would imagine the mood
5:07 am
is solemn there, chris. yeah it is. i actually went down to watch the caisson go up pennsylvania avenue, and you could hear a pin drop as though the hooves of the horse went clop, clop up the street. you know, for president jimmy carter returning now to the city where the georgia democrat started to build a legacy of being a humanitarian and statesman. in washington, people are pausing to reflect on the life and legacy of president jimmy carter. james earl carter jr loved our country. he lived his faith. he served the people a ad he left the world better than he found it. in a ceremony bringing together leaders and dignitaries with the carter family, the capitol welcomed the 39th president back to washington. remembering carter as a man who performed a lifetime of selfless

service after his one term in the white house, the longest post-presidency of any american president ever. he focused on making the lives of his fellow men better. the late president's final journey began tuesday at the carter center in atlanta, the base for his post-presidency charitable work. his flag draped coffin loaded onto a presidential aircraft, designated special air mission 39 for the trek to washington. carter's path through the capitol reflecting the path of his life. a stop at the u.s. navy memorial, which he authorized in 1980, acknowledging the former president's time at the naval academy and service as a submarine engineer. a horse drawn caisson traveled the streets where carter began a modern day tradition of walking in the inaugural parade. then at the capitol, a solemn ceremony steeped in enduring american traditions, a stop at the place where, nearly 50 years ago, a humble peanut farmer raised his hand and became a world leader.

and president carter will lie in state in the capitol rotunda behind me until 7:00 local time tomorrow morning. until then, members of the public can go around the clock to pay their respects. laura. nice tribute there. thank you very much, chris. well, here at home, post offices and federal buildings will close tomorrow to observe the national day of mourning. the nike missile site in the marin headlands will also be closed. and the maritime research center at the national historical park in san francisco. the ninth circuit u.s. court of appeals will close, as will all u.s. citizenship and immigration service offices in san francisco. naturalization ceremonies and other appointments are being rescheduled. also, federal workers will still receive pay for the day. new leadership in san francisco moving forward today, mayor elect danielle lowery will take office. last night, he attended a unity service at temple emanuel. this

hall of course, monitoring weather that we're expecting across the bay area today. how is it looking for us, kari? it's a little bit warmer because we've had these gusty winds picking up. that wind tends to create that friction. more energy and warmer temperatures are the result. so we are starting out with upper 50s and low 60s. right now it is 61 degrees in sonoma. but where we are seeing the calmer wind, the temperature falls a lot faster. so we're in the upper 40s right now in fremont. and as you head out in oakland. that's a live look this morning. we are now at 57 degrees here with a breezy wind, a clear sky, and we're going to see a lot of sunshine throughout the day as our temperatures here head for the mid 60s. it will be just as nice as it was yesterday and the wind will start to calm down. mike, you were tracking the east bay commute. east bay commute is where things tend to start early on our on our mornings. and we're looking at the altamont pass, but the only signs of anything but green. the rest of the east bayooks great. we did have a tree down highway 13 southbound was blocked early this morning, but things cleared

already mild this morning and breezy sunshine and temperatures headed for the mid 60s today and about the same tomorrow, maybe even a lot more upper 60s and a few low 70s santa rosa tomorrow afternoon. headed for 71 degrees and 68 degrees in hayward. keeping in mind that normally we're in the upper 50s, so this is well above what we typically see, and it's still going to be very warm on friday and into the weekend. as far as when we could get some rain. it's going to be a while, and there's one chance of rain toward the end of next week, and it doesn't even look like a significant storm. it's a very quick moving system that's in and out of here as we go toward the middle of theeek and temperature wise and in inland spotlight gilroy, we're going to have some pretty mild weather that continues throughout the weekend as well as into early next week. highs in the low 60s with a lot of sunshine. in fact, really nothing but sunshine in this forecast through tuesday. our mornings will be chilly though,

starting out in the upper 30s and low 40s, and expect about the same in san francisco. mike, you're hearing about a hazard in oakland. yes. our friend benny moved the camera so we could take a look. i do see flashing lights approaching this vehicle, this disabled truck or the truck that's over on the right shouer. i believe it may have dropped some metal bars in the roadway, so there may be a traffic wreck. we'll watch this north toward high street. so far, no problems. but in the last three minutes, i've seen a lot of headlights start heading south. there were no traffic breaks reported through the area, but it did look like. there you go. folks were stacked up here. there may have been debris. actually, it might have been misreported, the debris and the hazard in the area. so we'll track this portion right by the coliseum closely for the next couple of minutes. and i'll let you know as those updates come in. right now we do have the slowing that starts for highway 37 west. it cleared up from the overnight closure eastbound right on schedule. highway four not yet slowing showing any slowdowns and the rest of the bay showing a typical easy build right now. back to you. thanks so much, mike. 521 right now, next here on today in the bay

overwhelmed southern california neighborhoods as blistering winds fueled multiple wildfires. thousands are without power and out of their homes, many of which firefighters are now in a desperate battle to save. meteorologist kari hall of course, tracking those intense conditions. plus, san francisco's mayor elect is set to take office. we'll take you live to san francisco with the changes daniel lurie is already making and the leadership positions he's already filling. this is today in the bay. 530 on your wednesday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we begin with that breaking news down in southern california. that's where out of controlled wildfires simply leaving firefighters overmatched at this hour. three separate fires are causing major
5:31 am
destruction. by far the largest started yesterday morning in pacifica, pacific palisades, and has now exploded in size. another fire, a major one, is now burning in altadena. this is north of pasadena, and a third one is now growing in the city of sylmar. the conditions are intense. firefighters and homeowners agree the whipping santa ana winds are creating the seeding seeds for disaster. what you're feeling are these sporadic winds. it's not this consistent flow from the usual santa ana's that puts it in a in a consistent direction. embers jump ahead as the wind blows, so they jump ahead of the fire and they catch things on fire. it's just there's fire all the way around us. it is a tough firefight. needless to say, there is no containment on any of these fires. in some bay area fire teams already helping on the front lines, this is a live look at mount wilson in southern california. it is pointing towards the altadena fire. look at the size of it. photojournalist alex vasquez
5:32 am
from our la sister station is on the front lines and sent us this report a short time ago. you're seeing here is l.a. county fire engine 93. trying to get a stance. save the home next door. this home here is not burned. this is the home that's fully engulfed. and they're doing their best to keep the flames off this other home. now you can take a look at how strong this wind actually is. these flames are actually flying. so far about 18ft. now take a look at these embers. as you can see there in the firefighters face. one firefighter told me he's having a hard time even being able to see out here. so let me get you a close look here at what they're doing. this is this is how they're putting water on this house, trying to keep the flames just feet away from this roof right here. so this is a full blown hand combat, as they call it, trying to keep the flames down away from the other home, trying to keep water on the flames, to try to cool it down. but you can see firefighters right now is just the wind is the biggest factor
5:33 am
here. they're having an extremely hard time. they just called in for extra resources. it looks like they just showed up right now. they're they're gearing up to get in there as well to help them out. but this home here, a lot of our viewers don't always get to see. oh, take a look at this. this is where the winds really pick up. take a look at these embers. these guys are having a hard time. and if anybody ever wonders how difficult it is to fight these fires, this is it right here. this is where they go. this firefighter here is only feet away. and i can tell you i'm about 20 yards from this home and i can feel the heat really, really strong. firefighters. that's just heartbreaking to see. that was alex vasquez reporting. we turn now to meteorologist kari hall. boy, what firefighters need right now is a break in these conditions. those winds are just fanning these flames. and we just got a new wind gust from the altadena area. 90mph. just updated it here on the map. and they're not getting a break just yet. and we're seeing the peak of those winds happening as we speak. it will continue over the
5:34 am
next several hours. and you're seeing the 60, 70, 90 mile per hour winds that continues with this particularly dangerous red flag warning. that's the highest level of a red flag warning they can issue. and we are looking at that new eaton fire that's burning there in the altadena hills. and a lot of communities there, a very populated area. so we are seeing now some very rough conditions as we are still going to see those winds 4050 and look at that 70 mile per hour winds around calabasas. and as we go into the afternoon, into the evening, it's very gradual that these winds calm down. but we are expecting still more of those high winds today here at home, we're seeing some lighter winds and a lot of the valleys still about ten mile per hour winds in san jose, in santa rosa at 17 mile per hour winds. but some of our hills are still getting 45 to 65 mile per hour wind gusts. as we go throughout the day, it will be warm, breezy, and sunny and our
5:35 am
temperatures headed for the mid 60s. but of course, our thoughts are with all of our friends and family there in socal will continue to monitor those conditions there. back to you. absolutely, kari. thank you. and we will continue to bring you updates on these wildfires throughout our newscast, as well as on our website, nbcbayarea.com. if you haven't already done so, make sure you download our free nbc bay area app to stay current. 534 right now. things are about to change inside san francisco city hall. that's because later this morning, mayor elect daniel lurie will take his oath of office. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us in city hall this morning. and ginger, the incoming mayor, certainly has a busy day on tap. that is correct. good morning to you, marcus and laura. it is and will be a busy day for mayor elect daniel lurie. he'll start his day just a couple hours from now in the tenderloin at saint anthony's foundation. he will end it here at civic center plaza, right in front of city
5:36 am
hall, where you can kind of see make out a bit of what has already been set up this morning. all eyes will be on that stage down the way with city hall in the backdrop. the inauguration of san francisco's new mayor is scheduled to begin at 1130 this morning. now, the lead up to today has been filled with various events, a number of them public service ones, where lurie recommits that his administration will be one of service to the people. that commitment reiterated last night as well at the congregation emanuel lurie, given special blessings of support by representatives of diffent faith and religious institutions of san francisco. the resounding theme we are here to work together. san francisco is known all over the world as a place where people are allowed to love who they want to love, and practice any faith that they choose without fear of persecution. a place where people seek safe harbor and
5:37 am
shelter, and that will remain true under my administration, the congregation emanuel, everyone. meanwhile, later this morning, just a couple blocks away from where the inauguration is set up, mayor london breed will take part in one of her final events as mayor of san francisco, as san francisco sheriff paul miyamoto will be sworn in as the city's 37th sheriff. breed releasing a statement that reads in part, quote, as i leave office, i am filled with hope for the future. san francisco will always be the phoenix that rises. a love for san francisco is something that both mayor london breed and mayor elect daniel lurie share. mayor elect will make his way around the city that he loves later this morning, as i mentioned, he'll start at saint anthony's foundation. he'll make his way to the cable car turnaround at powell street. will he'll open up for some questions from the media. we will be there every step of the way, including the inauguration that starts at 1130. and you can find our coverage on

nbcbayarea.com. we're live in san francisco. ginger conejero saab today in the bay. absolutely. thanks, ginger. and as she was just saying, of course we have you covered when it comes to that special coverage of our mayoral inauguration. you can watch live on nbcbayarea.com, as well as nbc bay area at 1130. it's going to be following our midday newscast. you can also link to other streaming platforms as we have out there, roku, pluto, and also our wsite. san mateo county is issuing its first public response to a $10 million discrimination claim filed by the embattled sheriff. attorneys for sheriff christina corpus filed that claim on monday, alleging gender and racial discrimination. she, of course, is under intense pressure to resign after an independent report raised questions about her leadership. now, voters will have the ultimate say in a march special election. the statement issued yesteterday by the county reads in part the assertions that she has been discriminated against, harassed and defamed because she is both a woman and a latinx person are completely

baseless and a distraction from the issues. the county now has 45 days to respond in court. let's take a live look out for you this morning in san jose, looking nice and calm. there certainly a different story what we're seeing down in southern california. kari but winds here kind of calm comparison to. yeah, definitely. and we are seeing a lighter wind. still a little breezy in some spots, but it's mainly the hills where we've seen those winds still gusting in san jose. the wind now coming in from the north at 14mph. it's keeping those temperatures a lot warmer. and so we will see these temperatures hold steady and then gradually warm up as we head for the mid 60s for the afternoon, up to 66 degrees in downtown san jose for the east bay. we're going to see a high of 62 in martinez and 65 in hayward. also breezy near the coast with half moon bay up to 62 degrees. and we're still above normal for this time of year, with mid to upper 60s all across the bay area and into the north bay, with santa rosa
5:40 am
looking at a high of 66 degrees. we'll take a look at what's ahead coming up. mike, you are chking on that congestion in oakland? yeah, i'm happy to report. as the commute starts to build, we see relief from the big flow of traffic that was heading down toward the coliseum. i think there was debris on the southbound side. in addition to what they were talking about. the hazard, the disabled truck over at the high street, high rise on the northbound side. so that's good. while we're near the bart station here, we'll talk about delays getting to the oakland airport for bart extension as well as to sfo. both extensions are having issues, mechanical problems. so there will be delays for bart riders heading to either sfo or oakland. now we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza because about now we should see those metering lights. they have been turned on. we should see the impact and the slowing toward the toll plaza not yet visible here. that's the good news. traffic is flowing smoothly toward the scene, but you do see the impact of more traffic and the roads and the lanes narrowing at the incline. highway 37 highway four, both showing slower sensors. so that's what we have for the morning commute. and tonight, of course, we have
5:41 am
another closure for eastbound 37. again, that will happen every night at 9:00 eastbound into vallejo. and starting today for the next until the 15th, we have the lower manzanita park and ride because of high tides. they do that when that parking lot is at risk of flooding. back to you. 5.40 on your wednesday morning. lots more still to come, including donald trump will not rule out military action against panama and denmark. growing housing affordability crisis here in the bay area. the small dent made into that problem by this development behind me here in the east

three. let's head to palo alto with a live look outside. all clear as you're heading out. still a little breezy at times and temperatures in the upper 40s. it's going to quickly warm up throughout the day as we head toward the mid 60s. lots of sunshine and the wind gradually calming down. we'll get a look ahead to the rest of our microclimate forecast coming up. and we're looking at the wednesday slowdown here in san jose. northbound 101 right on schedule. see slower sensors for the stretch of 101 from 680 up to oakland road. we'll show you how the rest of the traffic trends that we're seeing some slowing in the east bay, of course. thanks, kari. mike. it is 544 right now. the house has passed a tough new bill that would deport unauthorized immigrants caught breaking the law. scott mcgrew. this got a surprising amount of support

from democrats. it did. good morning to you. nearly 50 of them in the house. and i think it's a good indication of the pendulum swinging. democrats lost the white house, the senate, the house. some of them are adjusting to what it seems americans want now, the law. we're talking about would allow the deportation of unauthorized immigrants accused of relatively simple crimes like shoplifting. the bill, which will be voted on in the senate on friday, is named after lake and riley, the young nursing student killed by an immigrant who had crossed illegally and had been arrested for shoplifting. all house republicans 48. democrats voting in favor. california democrats largely voting no, including brand new congressman from san jose, sam liccardo. desaulnier ted lieu pelosi, lofgren. swalwell. all voted no as well. president elect trump held a wide ranging press conference from his mar a lago home on tuesday. the first hour was trump speaking extemporaneously,
5:46 am
claiming windmills harmed whales, saying he'll rename the gulf of mexico, the gulf of america and a fairly lengt dishwashers. trump said americans should be able to use as much water as they wish. it's called rain comes down from. comes down from heaven. and they want to do no. no. water comes out of the shower. it goes drip, drip, drip. so what happens? you're in the shower ten times as long. you know no water comes out of the faucet. you want to wash your hands. you. they want to go back to even stronger than what they have right now. now it was trump's discussion of panama and denmark, which owns greenland, that got the most attention. asked about military action against the two countries, trump said he could not rule that out with your references to greenland and the panama canal and so forth, can you assure the world that as you try to get control of these
5:47 am
areas, you are not going to use military or economic coercion? no, i can assure you you're talking about panama and greenland. no, i can't assure you on either of those two. but i can say this. we need them for economic security. now, to be fair, no president asked if he would rule out military action. ever says yes. no past situation we can think of anyway. and we have used military action against panama. but denmark is a nato ally, and there's no controversy over its ownership of greenland. it owns greenland the way we own florida. other news, mr. trump's lawyers have asked the supreme court to step in this morning in the case of his fraud trial to block sentencing on friday. the body of the 39th president united states lying in state at the capitol rotunda. his funeral is tomorrow. the american stock market and the federal offices will be closed in observance. mr. carter, a former navy submarine officer, former farmer and governor and peacemaker, was
5:48 am
100 years old. nbc bay area will, of course, have special coverage of that funeral that starts at 7:00 tomorrow morning. all right, scott, thank you. well, new this morning. police are searching for thieves who smashed a truck into an oakland liquor store just about two hours ago and may have left with an atm. now that damage so bad, police believe that the building may have to be red tagged. it happened a little before 4 a.m. this is at the sky market on 27th and 14th avenue. police tell our photographer there at the scene that they still haven't heard from the owner to confirm there was an atm inside. no one was injured. 547 right now, new help is arriving for those trying to make it in the bay. today in the bay's bob redell live for us outside of a new affordable housing complex, this is welcoming residents today in castro valley. and bob, unfortunately, right now the bay area, they just need far too many of these types of developments. and this is a situation, a problem we're all well aware of. we've reported on
5:49 am
this for many years. good morning to you, marcus and laura. according to alameda county, there were almost 9500 people here in the east bay in alameda county last year who are either living in the streets or in a shelter. so this new housing project behind me only has room for 18,000 households who were previously unhoused, which is obviously life changing for those people, and a step in the right direction for solving the housing crisis here in the bay area. but it's just a small step when you consider the magnitude of the problem. so behind me that is crescent grove. it's a new affordable housing apartment complexere in castro valley that was built by eaton housing, recently completed and now welcoming new residents. it's a 72 unit affordable housing development. it's a mix of studio and 1 to 2 three, 1 to 3 bedroom units. it's located near ruby street and crescent avenue. 18 of those units will be given to unhoused family families, 15 will be given to veterans, and ten will be given to people who have
5:50 am
intellectual disabilities. that those will be given out through a voucher program. the remaining units were filled via a general lottery lottery for people making 60% of the median income in this area, we have people who are exiting homelessness who have been homeless for years, sometimes even decades. and so having a stable place to call home, a roof over their head, and then also wraparound services to support them as they exit out of homelessness and deal with the trauma of being homeless, can be completely rehabilitating. so as i mentioned, our 72 units, they have all been leased out to new families. those moving into this building will also have access to special amenities, including a shared ev, cars and bicycles. reporting live here in castro valley, bob redell today in the bay. it's great to see that development there, but certainly still needs so many of them. all right. thanks, bob. well, new this morning. new proof. you never know who you may be standing next to at the airport, or at least what you're standing
5:51 am
next to. tsa is out with its annual list of the most unusual finds, and a lighthearted video chronicling the discovery coming in at number five. someone thought it was a good idea to bring a gun inside a teapot along with shot glasses. maybe they just didn't know it was actually being used as a hiding place, right? i don't know, but, you know, tsa agents made that discovery at the portland airport. number four, tsa agents in new hampshire. they discovered methamphetamine stashed inside a pair of crutches. yeah, really crazy there. they were just hiding those drugs inside there. and in miami, someone tried to smuggle live snakes inside their pants. and, no, we're not sure if they were pants they were wearing. okay, this is the weirdest story ever. go ahead. keep going. so we have number two right here in el paso, texas. bought the republica explosive replica
5:52 am
explosive there. it was made from a walkie talkie. that's crazy. all right, let's go to the top one here. the top on the list. tsa agents in houston discovered a gun hidden inside a baby stroller. we should note bay area airports were not part of this year's top ten list. i think that was really frightening. not even funny at all. no, that all people were trying to bring some of those things. drugs. guns. right. all right. the snakes. i can understand if they were a cargo pants, but. oh my gosh, samuel jackson said it best anyway. all right. colorfully, let's look at what's going on weather wise out there for you this morning. let's move on. we're going to start out this morning with some gusty winds. it's still windy in the hills. some of the mountains are getting those peak wind gusts as we speak 49 right now in mount diablo. it is now at 63, in the north bay of mount saint helena. and all these areas where you're seeing the pink shading, we're getting at
5:53 am
least 50 mile per hour winds right now, at least in a lot of the valleys near the coast. the wind is calming down. so for san francisco, it's going to be a very mild, sunny day actually. really nice. and we're headed for 64 degrees for a high temperature, 62, in martinez, as well as dublin and fremont and 66 in san jose. tomorrow is basically a repeat of today and maybe even slilightly warmer, up to 71 degrees in santa rosa. now, we're not supposed to be this warm for early januauary. usually we're in the mid to upper 50s for a high, so we're at least ten degrees above that in many parts of the inland valleys, high pressure continues. it keeps the storm track away from the bay area also, giving us these dry northerly winds. and there may be more wind possible going into the weekend as another quick moving low moves to the east, and that high pressure moves right overhead across the bay area. and when we talk about how dry it's been across southern california versus northern california, we know that around
5:54 am
santa rosa, we've had about double the normal amount of rain. and that's where we stand since october 1st, measuring all of the rainfall we've had and how that compares to normal. but for the la area, they've had anywhere from zero to only 10% of their normal amount of rainfall. so it is critically dry. and unfortunately, as we get these wind events, we're still going to have that continued fire danger in those areas here at home. we're going to continue with some mild temperatures, highs in the mid to upper 60s and overnight lows in the low 40s. as we take a look at san francisco, we're matching those temperatures for the inland area. so there's not a big range from the coast to the inland valleys. and mike, you're seeing sensors slowing through san jose. no big surprise and no big change to our normal pattern. maybe actually a little lighter than monday and tuesday about this time when we saw the restoration of that traffic north 101, it's already starting to lessen a little bit here. and the wednesday's typically see lighter traffic. we'll see how thursday shapes up a little bit
5:55 am
more probay. but next monday and tuesday we'll see another burst of folks returning from this week's if they had this week as vacation, we're looking toward the tri-valley. no problems, no big delays. but the volume starts to build here. castro valley y south 880 out of hayward and into union city. we're watching that. still no big problems right now. approaching the bay bridge. a smooth drive in. the metering lights are on. we're looking at highway 37 and highway four. typical build right here. a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. we've had quite some time, about ten 15 minutes for these metering lights to show some impact. and now it's just starting to show those middle lanes. it starts to build from the middle out, remember, because folks plan ahead, they get to the middle lane so they don't have to change lanes. as we lose those outer lanes approaching that incline. as we're looking at the rest of the drive, we're going through contra costa county. a lot of folks head south on vasco road toward 580, but we're not at the half hour yet. we've just reached 25 minutes, so that's actually a lot lighter again than monday and tuesday. pretty typical for a wednesday as you travel through that portion of the east bay. and we'll end in the north bay, san rafael. great
5:56 am
visibility south 101. no delays all the way from san rafael to the golden gate bridge, a smooth drive. remember those lanes do close all week. they're having different configurations north and south, bound down to 1 or 2 lanes at a time. back to you. thanks, mike. well happening now. police in palo alto adding extra patrols in the wake of recent string of crimes. three involve overnight break ins at businesses in and surrounding the university avenue area. now, in all three cases, burglars stole hundreds or even thousands of dollars in cash, and each break in actually took place in the days leading up to the new year. and if you have any information about what may have happened here. palo alto police would like you to contact them. we continue to watch multiple wildfires that are forcing thousands from their homes in southern california. this as wind driven flames show no signs of easing overnight. it is so concerning. some of tse winds are topping 90mph. we're going to have a look ahead at six at the overnight destruction, and
5:57 am
also a look at the fight to try to contain those flames. overnight winds right here in the bay area. we're going to have a first look at the damage some people are waking up to in the east bay, and how it actually affected a highway there. and don't forget nbc bay area streams 24/7. you can watch us whenever you'd like. we're on roku or other streaming platforms. a lot more news ahead on this wednesday morning. it is 556. you're watching
6:00 am
fires wreak havoc on southern california. thousands are under evacuation orders. multiple homes are destroyed. the latest on the fight to contain those flames as incredibly strong winds leave crews overwhelmed. and winds also having an impact here at home. from downed trees to power outages. a look at the overnight damage in the east bay. plus, a new mayor taking office in the city by the bay. what's in store for danielle? laurie's inauguration day. this is today in the bay.
