deal, given that the sag awards are often a good indicator of who will receive oscar nominations. we shall see. all right. don't forget you can watch our newscast 24/7 on pluto and other streaming platforms. janelle joins me now with what's coming up at 530. jessica and kyra, right now at 530, we continue our breaking news coverage of the devastating wildfires in southern california. we're going to take you live to the front lines, and we'll have the latest updates on the fight by firefighters to gain some type of control as the fires remain at 0% containment. also done with congress and focusing on oakland, barra lee officially announced that she's running for mayor. we talked with her about the big move and two big name bay area companies are teaming up the partnership between facebook and ebay. the news at 530 starts right now. thanks for joining us. i'm jessica aguirre. and i'm janelle wang right now in los angeles, mayor karen bass and fire
5:31 pm
officials are giving an update on the devastating wildfires burning in the area. entire neighborhoods leveled. tens of thousands of acres have burned. the mayor says air operations have resumed. fortunately, as the winds start to die down. but a red flag warning remains in place until tomorrow. the largest of the wildfires, the palisades fire burning in pacific palisades, has burned more than 24mi■!s. 1.5 million people have been without power, and at least five schools have suffered significant damage. firefighters are overwhelmed and suffering from issues with fire hydrants and low water pressure, and they're pulling water out of reserve tanks fasterhan it can be replenished. and the l.a. county fire chief, admitting that they do not have enough manpower for an emergency of this size. there's no there's no fire department. there's no there's no help here. and all i need is a little bit of liquid
5:32 pm
on the side of this house to stop it from burning down. so right now, it's really just about the wind where i'm at nature's mercy. and i'm frustrated. i think everybody here is frustrated. this is what firefighters are up against at this hour. you could see the city of los angeles surrounded by fire in almost all directions. officials say the woodley fire is now under control, but the other three have 0% containment. officials are telling people to have a plan ready and evacuate immediately. if told to do so. right. you saw it there. stretched out fire crews battling these wildfires. and we're only beginning to see the magnitude of the destruction right now. joining me now is nbc's jennifer bjorklund. bjorklund. she's in pacific palisades. really? we're just really starting to see what it looks like now. when? yesterday, when we saw pacific palisades. it's a difficult place to get in and out. there was a lot of stuff going on there. what is the situation now, and are we
5:33 pm
seeing a hopscotch of destruction? or is pacific palisades, as some people say, completely leveled? yeah. jessica, it's it is pretty much leveled. there's very little left. in fact, we had one resident riding through here on his bike who said he had gone around and did some checking. i don't know how he got through the fire lines, but he told us that there are only two schools left in this whole region that were still standing. the place is a different it will never be the same. it's changed overnight. when this fire storm came through pacific palisades actually was a nice little community between malibu and santa monica. and now it is absolutely taken off the map. if it didn't get it the first time the fire went back up the hill, came back around the erratic winds, pushed it all over the
5:34 pm
place. there were no water drops overnight last night because the wind was so strong that it jus there was no way that they could make any headway, even if they had wanted to take the risk to do the drops in the canyon, the water would evaporate before it even hit the ground, so they didn't even bother with it. fire tes, strike teams and crews stationed around trying to save one structure as another one burned. fire would jump the other way and get. and you know, they were chasing it all night, all day today. so, you know, there's not expected to be any real change in the wind as far as how erratic and how gusty and how strong the wind storm has been until the weekend. as far as firefighters are concerned right now, it's sort of died down, but it will pick right back up again and put them back where they were 20 minutes ago. so a very, very difficult firefight with ver difficult conditions to even plan on how
5:35 pm
to attack these multiple fires burning all over southern california. so, jennifer, given the complexity of the wind and the fact that they weren't able to do airdrops yesterday, have they been able to manage to get any in there? i mean, we're hearing that the wind is really not going to die down until maybe friday. so what is the what is the air attack at this point? right. air aack today. they, they they say that they were able to get some aircraft up. i'm not sure if they got any in here in pacific palisades. i sure didn't hear any. and we also have the complication that the president is in town, which is great because he's here to see firsthand the devastation and approve a emergency declaration that will free up some federal funds. but on the downside, there's no there's no fly zone, you know, because the president is in town, so you can't have aircraft just flying around. so there's those two complications. they have not been able to get overhead and really get a good handle on
5:36 pm
what's burned, what's left, because that's what they usually do from the air. and we just haven't had that opportunity. we haven't had that much of a lull in the wind to see even what we're dealing with. the coming days are going to be extremely difficult. thank you so much for being with us and for showing us what's happening out there. stay safe. the nfl playoffs are just around the corner, and if these fires continue to burn into the next week, the league might have to change plans. the los angeles rams are set to host the minnesota vikings in the first round of the playoffs on monday night, and the nfl said today it's currently prepared to play the game as scheduled, but there is a backup plan. the league says if the situation does not improve by game time, the rams and vikings will face off in arizona instead. the rams have their first practice of the week scheduled for tomorrow, but that too could be moved because of the wildfire smoke. we will continue to update the wildfires down south on air and on our website, nbcbayarea.com. and
5:37 pm
coming up at six, we're going to catch up with some of the bay area fire crews who are joining the fight down in la from the south bay to the east bay. a lot more help is now arriving down south. now, the strong winds that we have here caused some problems in the east bay overnight in alameda on union street near central avenue. you can see that tree uprooted, toppled onto a parked car on clement. then there was a utility pole which fell that knocked out power to a nearby neighborhood. but it has since been restored. in oakland, all lanes of highway 13 are open again after crews cleared a fallen tree in the southbound direction near redwood road. you can see the video there. shows another fallen tree at broadway terrace near the southbound 13 exit. all those lanes, thankfully, are open. power outage closed the oakland zoo today. the zoo posted the message on social media. pg&e says the outage also impacted about 70 customers. the power was restored this afternoon. the zoo says it will open for free tonight. it is official former congresswoman barbara lee is
5:38 pm
running for oakland mayor. supporters have spent weeks trying to lure her into the race. nbc bay area's marianne favro caught up with the candidate to talk about why she's running. after announcing her run in a tweet this morning, barbara lee officially pulled the papers to run at oakland city hall this afternoon. so why does the 78 year old, with decades of political accomplishments under her belt, want to be oakland's next mayor? because i love people and i want to help make people's lives better. for more than two decades. lee represented the bay area in the u.s. house of representatives. she says if elected as mayor, her top priorities in oakland include reducing crime and looking for new ways to address the city's homeless crisis. if we can find investments to be able to hire people who are unsheltered, to be able to help them understand that the blight we have to clean up and maybe help them understand that we all have to do this together and find a way
5:39 pm
to help employ people and train them. we have to add that to our strategy. a group of supporters greeted lee as she arrived at city hall today, including karl chan, who has been a very vocal advocate for oakland businesses. he believes lee will help address the city's crime crisis. hopefully, she can tap into different resources to bring in additional fundingnd, you know, talents to help us to, you know, battle on all these issues, especially to improve the public safety. the next mayor will also face a massive budget deficit of about $130 million, one that's already forced the city to shutter two fire stations as a cost saving measure. today, firefighters say they hope the longtime congresswoman can help improve public safety. we've had direct discussions with the congresswoman, explained. our situation right now, just with our firehouse closures and the danger that that really places
5:40 pm
oakland in is it's terrible. and so she is committed to doing everything possible to reopen closed firehouses and avoiding these dangerous closures in the future. lee also spent seven years in the california legislature and 11 y years workg for the late congressman ron dellums. but some question if lee is the right person for the job, including some of the more than a dozen other candidates in the race. mayoral candidate renee webb issued this statement saying oakland cannot afford to have barbara lee as our next mayor. it will only further bankrupt our city and continue the lawlessness that has plagued oakland for too long. voters will decide who will be oakland's next mayor during a special election april 15th in oakland, marianne favro. nbc bay area news. two silicon valley giants are teaming up. ebay shoppers will now be able to view listings on facebook. meta says users can now browse ebay listings on facebook marketplace, then check out them
5:41 pm
on ebay. the feature is being tested in the u.s, france and germany. the move comes two months after meadow was fined $840 million by the european union. officials say meta broke antitrust laws when they added their marketplace to the facebook app. meta is planning to appeal that decision. times are tough, so high power and gas bills make these times even tougher. but there is help out there if you know how to apply. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. i'll show you how next. i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri right now, a chilly 59 in livermore, 40s on the way tonight. we'll take a look at ththat morni forecast. plus looks at the top califora wind gustsni
5:42 pm
pete g. writes, "my tween wants a new phone. how do i not break the bank?" we got you, pete. xfinity mobile was designed to save you money and gives you access to wifi speeds up to a gig. so you get high speeds for low prices. better than getting low speeds for high prices. right, bruce? -jealous?

5:44 pm
you may have help, but only if you ask for it. the next couple of minutes might cut your electric or gas bill by up to 20%, or wipe away some past due bills. the point is, if you're having trouble paying your energy bill, don't give up. yeah, there's a lot of help out there. that's neal hebert with pg&e. he says several programs with funny looking names like liheap, sierra, care, reach and amp have serious savings built into them for families like yours. pg&e website lists all of them, and that qr code will take you right there to find out about them and to apply for them. i want to talk about two of them. the first one is called care. care. it's california alternate rates for energy program that offers a discount of 20% or more. that's a big savings every month for two years. whether you get the discount depends on your income. for example, the max a family of four can make is $62,400 a year. but even if your income is higher, you might still qualify.
5:45 pm
if your family gets assistance like food stamps or wilk. so click the qr code to check it out. hebert said the help arrives quickly. if you get approved now, you might start seeing the 20% savings as soon as the next billing cycle. now, if you've already fallen behind, i want to talk about a program called liheap. it's also an acronym for low income energy assistance program liheap. that's federally funded. that's a program overseen by the state. it offers a one time payment of up to $1,000 on past due bills. your family's income matters here, too, so click the qr code to see if your family qualifies. hebert says if you do qualify for that $1,000 one time payment, you might see it within a few weeks. applying is free. so side note if you stumble onto a website or get a phone call or text from somebody demanding money to help you apply, ignore them. it's a scam. again, applying is free. you have to be so careful. so many scams out
5:46 pm
there right now. well, the mornings are definitely cold. i've heaters cranked up but it is nice during the day. the sun is out. yeah, it's been, you know, a nice rebound this afternoon. we're going to be in for more of that as we head through tomorrow's forecast. even right into this upcoming weekend, we don't see any huge problems in our weather. let's go ahead and take you to that microclimate forecast. and i did want to get you these top california wind gusts. in case you missed this earlier, we did get up to 100mph out here in southern california, san gabriel mountains, and we saw it get up to 100mph more than just once. this wasn't just a five minute event here. malibu, 85 mile per hour top gusts. burbank airport, even 83, chino hills, 77. and then back here locally, mount saint helena got up to 68. we did have some pretty rough winds early this morning above 500ft. a little bit scary for those of you living in the hills. thankfully that is gone as well, so we'll take you out here to concord. currently 61 degrees. we've got those colder 40s on
5:47 pm
the way 910 and also 11:00. so layer it up if you're headed out to run any errands tonight. napa 57 very calm winds out of the south here at three, and we're dipping down to 48 at 9:00, 46 by 11:00. so let's get a look at the larger weather pattern and the area of low pressure that's been responsible for producing all of this. wind is now pulling away towards mexico. it't's just still so close to southern california. that's why they're going to be into some of these gusty winds through tomorrow and eventually some relief once we hit friday evening. so friday evening, that's the time zone. all the firefighters and everyone looking forward to when they can get those calmer winds in the mountains and hopefully do some more air drops down there in socal. we're going to have more live reports coming up in our additional shows here as we roll through tonight, but as far as it goes for us, high pressure returns tomorrow. it's going to bring back some sunshine, relatively calm weather here for us, so we'll start it off with the chance of a little bit of patchy fog right around the bay. i don't think
5:48 pm
