(♪♪) in southern california, just
5:01 am
like southern california. crews were helping us during our time of need. right now at five bay area firefighters front and center in the southern california firefight. this as one fire suddenly turns into a criminal investigation. we have the latest on that and the scramble to make headway before strong winds return. also left with nothing. an up close look at the new pop up effort to help thousands of victims. this is today in the bay. 5:00 good friday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. well, the number of confirmed deaths in l.a. county wildfires has now grown to ten. first responders say they are fearful that that number will only go higher. now, this comes as an arrest is made in an arson investigation that's getting underway in connection to a new fire in the san fernando valley. that new fire, the kenneth fire, is one of the three largest fires now burning in southern
5:02 am
california, along with the palisades and eaton fires. we have a live look at the fires right now. look at that glow. it's a tough fight for firefighters right now. they're actually trying to make as much progress as they can before the next round of strong winds returns. and we know they're coming. we're tracking the latest for you here in our newsroom. today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us with some big developments overnight from drone strike to the growing number of victims there chris. well good morning to you, marcus and laura. so that red flag condition is going to continue today as more crews roll into the five fire zones in southern california. as you know, some of them are from here in the bay area. that latest fire you mentioned is kenneth fire, which is now burning in ventura county, and that's north of malibu. crews worked very fast there and tried to throw a lot of resources at it in order to get a handle on it. and while all other fires are still under investigation, fire officials say this 1st may be a case of arson. police are questioning a man who was detained by citizens
5:03 am
in that neighborhood. now in the palisades fire, which is still the biggest fire we now know, two people died in the firestorm that just ripped through nearly 20,000 acres and as many as 10,000 structures. aerial crews were key in gaining about 6% containment, but at one point, a firefighting aircraft hit a drone and there is an investigation underway. now, still no containment on the eaton fire in altadena, where the l.a. county sheriff confirmed that eight people are known to have died. he warns, though, that there could be more victims that investigators just can't get to. as that fire is still raging in the area, 4000 structures are wiped out and there could be more. president biden just yesterday vowed to cover 100% of the firefighting cost for 180 days, and that will include first responder salaries, which includes crews from the bay area. our crews are here to help. in southern
5:04 am
california, just like southern california, crews were helping us during our time of need. so the firefight does continue and the stress is on, because we know that those red flag fire conditions are going to continue. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. and kari, we've seen how powerful it is when those firefighters can get a tiny break and get back up into the air. yeah, they've been getting only small breaks here and there. here's a look at our current wind gusts that we're getting right now in the san gabriel mountains. 60 mile per hour winds in malibu. we're still getting some of those. gusts to 48. rancho cucamonga is now at 35 and calabasas at 25. even here in the bay area in the north bay, we're getting some breezy winds in the higher elevations. here's a look at the wind forecast as we go throughout the day. once again, in some spots it is a little bit lighter as we're getting those winds at about 30 to 40mph, but still very gusty and into the afternoon. gradually the wind is expected to subside and then
5:05 am
we'll see some lighter winds later on tonight. but there is not a long break before we see the winds in some spots, mainly in the hills, start to pick up again and around santa clarita by tomorrow afternoon. we're still looking at 30mph, which is enough to fan some of those flames and continue the growth that we're seeing in some of those explosive fires. but the red flag warning today continues until 6 p.m. back to you. all right, kari, thank you. and so many people there across l.a. county are now left with nothing but a volunteer. effort is now underway to help those in need. one critical push to help arose mostly to the power of social media. today in the bay velena jones gives us a closer look from just outside the rose bowl. we are in a parking lot across from the rose bowl where there is a grassroots effort, a volunteer effort here of a whole bunch of street vendors that have come together through the power of social media on tiktok and galvanized everyone to bring
5:06 am
donations here. i want to walk you through what we're seeing here in this parking lot. we have seen dozens and dozens of volunteers come here and help out. we have donations from everything fromm little kids, so we have toys for children. we have baby wipes. we have diapers as we wk down this area. there's also hot food for those families that have been displaced that are in need. we have water here. we know water is critical right now for people. food, water. down over there you can see all the clothes that have been donated. there's coats, there's t shirts, there's shoes, there's blankets for children, for family members. all of this stuff has been donated by dozens and dozens and dozens of volunteers. they put a call out on social media through tiktok, and the community has responded. and when we see these volunteers,
5:07 am
they have been working overnight. they have been here for the past couple of days and just trying to help anyone that they can. we have talked to people who are he sleeping in their cars, who have just shared the emotional stories of how important these resources are in this heartbreaking time. many of them have nothing any longer, and so they have also shared with me they didn't know where to go until they saw this on social media. and so this is the response. we have seen excitement from these volunteers. they are just hoping to make an impact. even one of these volunteers was evacuated themselves. and so it really just shows you the power of community in these hard times. so, you know, volunteers tell us that they will be here for as long as needed. people can come here. they don't have to show
5:08 am
any i.d. or any id or anything. these resources will be available for them. reporting in pasadena, velena jones for today in the bay. now, our coverage on the devastating wildfires continue on air as well as on our streaming platforms. today, our midday newscast is extended for an entire hour. we are also monitoring the wildfires in southern california online any time now. make sure you stay with us and stay up to date by downloading our free nbc bay area app. 507 right now. want to take a live look in san francisco for you this morning? this is where new mayor daniel lowery is still rounding out his team. the mayor is planning to announce another appointment at 11:00 this morning. this is going to take place over at city hall, but it all comes in the wake of his announcement just yesterday to an act and hiring freeze. this is for the entire city. his decision comes with a city facing a massive budget shortfall. lowery says that that move is needed to bring spending
5:09 am
under control. now, in a statement, he says in part, quote, our city is facing a major budget deficit, and today the era of band-aid solutions is over. we are committed to fiscal discipline, giving san franciscans the accountability they demand and focusing the government on doing the core as well. 508 on this friday morning, as we take a live look outside overlooking san jose. boy, when i was driving in, did anyone notice the moon? no i didn't. i didn't notice that it was beautiful. no, it was beautiful. it was large as well. so clear out there. kari you can see. yes, it is clear. and we are approaching a full moon. at the time that you were driving in, laura, it was pretty low in the horizon. so that as it goes through more of the atmosphere gives it that mnification effect. and as we take a look at what to expect as we go into today, our air quality a little bit worse compared to yesterday, but it will be a moderate day in terms of what we're breathing in and the amount of particulate
5:10 am
matter and then our temperatures starting out cool as well. we're in the mid 40s right now as we go into the afternoon, a nice little warm up and in spots like san jose, we're going from 40s to the upper 60s already at noon, and those highs will be well above what's normal back to the upper 60s, but it may be a touch cooler for parts of the north bay. so we'll talk about the changes ahead. mike has a look at where we can save a little bit of money filling up gas, trying to point some spots out. spotlight shines on pleasanton to start for the bay's low of 3.39 at gulf. food mart garage and gas. they do it all over on first street in pleasanton. that's the lowest in the bay by a good measure. and then in santa clara we have their low in san jose, santa clara county san jose holds the best price of 3.53 at excel gas and mart on north first street. and in san francisco. the low holds at 355 as s it h all week. we'll visit one more time at double time on mission street. you can check gasbuddy.com to get the changes that might have happened overnight in your area.
5:11 am
right now. not a lot happening on the roadways. a smooth, easy drive. the volume of traffic really bumped up on monday and tuesday. kind of held off for the early commute to wednesday and thursday. today, of course, being friday, we don't see any slowing right here approaching through the bay bridge, through contra costa county and the north bay. back to you. today being wet friday, right. all right. thank you very much. 510 right now, another big hit for struggling san francisco. walgreens announces a new wave of store closures. but it turns out that's just one set of new closures, leaving some bay area residents rattled. tiktok is in court today, and we get the big jobs report coming up. let's go out to the future, see how wall street is preparing. it looks like it's going to be a quiet day ahead of the at least ahead of that. the jobs decision. i'm excited about what's next. but for this time, right here, right no i'm standing right in the center of all this love, man. i'm not going to miss one second of celebrating, hoda. how about a hoda? this morning, the today
5:12 am
show making her final day a very special day as the co-anchor there at today. her thoughts about what this day means and a look at some of the tribute
5:13 am
5:14 am
a door. it's going to be in the mid 40s. stepping out there and it's all clear. we will have a
5:15 am
lot of sunshine again today with a light wind and our temperatures warming up nely back into the mid 60s. we'll talk about the weekend coming up in a few minutes. and being friday, oakland shows a nice easy lighter drive right now on the nimitz. a note that bart connector to oakland airport still running every 18 minutes. it's a little bit slower than you might expect. doing some maintenance. you can take ac transit bus 73 if you need something quicker. well, good morning and very happy friday to you. markets were closed yesterday in observation of jimmy carter's funeral. back open this morning with the treasury note the yield hitting its highest point since april. we've talked about how that affects mortgage rates. so this is walgreens and this is kohl's. both are closing stores again. walgreens mostly in san francisco. kohl's will close stores in fremont, mountain view, napa pleasanton and san rafael. plus five others elsewhere in california. the company, based in wisconsin,
5:16 am
says it will offer severance packages to affected employees. now, kohl's aside, the job market continues to grow. we'll get the most recent jobs numbers at 530. economists figure 155,000 new jobs. this will be the last report for 2024. it looks back at december. and when we look at the year in general, it was strong with more than 2 million jobs added. the employment outlook is strong enough. the fed has really stopped worrying about its effect on the economy, and has indicated it may stop lowering interest rates. our ginger conejero saab has been telling us about the big case in the supreme court today, where tiktok is fighting for its life. at issue is tiktok a threat to national security like lawmakers y it is? or is it just an app where people communicate, as is their first amendment right? and where do those two things intersect? when do threats outweigh free speech? if tiktok loses this case, the law says
5:17 am
its parent company must sell the company the weekend after this one, or face removal from app stores. i spoke to frank mccourt recently. he used to own the dodgers and he wants to buy tiktok. would you change anything about the content on tiktok? because i'm going to say, sometimes when a billionaire buys a social network, he can screw it up. yeah, that's for sure. so that's why i don't want to. i say to people, this isn't about trusting me. this is about trusting themselves. people should should own their identity, control their identity, control their data, own their relationships, and decide how to permission its use and so on and so forth. now let me point out, you can want to buy tiktok all you want, but tiktok. bytedance doesn't need to sell it to you. so we'll see what happens today. there will be a decision very, very quickly. and then whether or not they sell or i mean, it depends
5:18 am
on whether they lose e or not.ot happens today, right? exactly. big day. all right. thank you. scott. you bet. 517 for you right now. happening today, a landmark san francisco hotel will celebrate its historic landmark status. the ritz-carlton opened on nob hill in the early 1990s. the neo-classical building was originally owned by the metropolitan life insurance company. dating back to 1909, the building actually gained landmark status in 1984, but today the hotel is unveiling a plaque and holding a ribbon cutting. that event is planned for 1:00 this afternoon and joining for you this morning. an end to an era today. that's right. we can only be talking about hoda kotb wrapping up her time co-anchoring the today show. this week's hoda has been filled with tributes and surprises, including an appearance by hoda's former sorority sisters. like 70 of them, she was also able to reconnect with family she made special bonds with over the years. today is sure to deliver an emotional and ahead of her
5:19 am
final broadcast, she reflected on this bittersweet time, closing one chapter and beginning another. there's a lot that goes into these shows and it's so important, but at the at the end of the day, you know, having done it for many, many years, you know, what i realized i had never done was walked my kids to school with a cup of coffee in my hand. and i, you know, my daughter is about to turn eight and my other one is five. and i thought to myself, now that's something i want to start doing every single day. i wish we could all do it. i hear you, hoda. the week long celebration concludes with a big party. you won't want to miss. it all starts at 7 a.m, right after today in the bay. and the great thing, we're all invited to the party. yeah. we'll head out there. we'll start driving. yeah. all right. driving around the city today should be a nice one for us. it's going to be really nice. we don't have to worry about the high winds. we
5:20 am
have sunshine and temperatures have been warmer than normal. as we take a look at our live view at the golden gate bridge, it is also going to have this kind o view all day long, with a sunny and mild day. and throughout the weekend the offshore wind will return. that's what we're watching for. the main concern that we have throughout the next veral days, and also the dry weather continues through at least the next week or so. as we take a look at our highs for this afternoon, we're headed up to 62 degrees in novato. today. it may be slightly cooler in parts of the north bay, but overall we're still back in the mid to upper 60s. for the south bay. we had some low 70s in parts of the north bay yesterday, but we're going to see this weather on repeat throughout the weekend with some mid to upper 60s and then just a touch cooler on sunday, with a high of 62 expected in san francisco and 60 in dublin. there may even be some upper 50s in livermore, there will be a quick moving area of low pressure just off to our east. that's going to create a pressure gradient, that's going to make those winds flow faster
5:21 am
between saturday and sunday. but as this high pressure remains in control across the region,t's going to block any chances of rain for quite a while. and we just got the word that we officially have an la nina developing. and what that means is in the equatorial pacific, the trade winds that move off towards the west are building up a pool along the equator of some cooler than normal water temperatures, and so that really affects the global pattern of the weather systems that we see moving across the pacific, the cool waters as they move across the eastern pacific. a lot of times that creates some drier conditions, but can also influence the upper level winds, the flow of the jet stream. and what we typically see for la nina years, there is this trail of the storm systems that move across northern california on northward, with a lot of storms moving through, but it can be very dry for southern california and parts of the south, which is
5:22 am
definitely not good news at this point. and we're also seeing dry conditions for the outlolook jut for the next two weeks, with well below average rainfall expected, as we are seeing, and we're expecting this to continue through at least the middle of the month. so here's a look at our highs for the inland areas in the mid to upper 60s. it's been well above normal, but will cool down slightly for the middle of next week. and mike, now you have a commute starting in the north bay. we'll check up here. no problems right now. clear view, clear drive, san rafael a representative shot, but basically all the way down out ofhe north county, coming down in through novato and then all the way to the golden gate bridge, which again, is clear view there as well, looking at a nice smooth drive throughout contra costa county. oh, the arrow here, the lower deck of the bay bridge, there was an earlier disabled vehicle. i believe everything's wrapped up without any issues. no slowing shows up in either direction for the bridge drive. and there's no backup at the toll plaza just yet. no metering lights, of course. that's early for a friday. the rest of the bay, the
5:23 am
south bay peninsula all looking great. tri-valley should start to see a little more traffic. the altamont really? not a bad deal. back to you. thanks, mike. 522 right now, next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. millions of families like yours can file their federal tax returns for free. starting today. i'm consumer investigator

gold bond believes touch says everything. it says... i see you. i feel you. and...i know you. gold bond. get in touch with irresistibly touchable skin. is our home. it's like everything is here right now at 530. returning to ruins. southern california fire victims getting a first look at what's left of their homes. we have the latest this morning from the front lines and here at home, the raging wildfires leave some woering about the reliability of fire hydrants in high risk neighborhoods. are they adequate to handle the potential load? well, the new message from local
5:31 am
firefighters and tiktok fights to survive. with the supreme court set to hear arguments surrounding the looming ban nine days from now. we're live breaking down what justices are likely to hear in the courtroom. this is today in the bay. good friday morning to you. 530 right now. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. and this morning we are getting some staggering numbers. authorities in southern california now confirming ten deaths in the la county wildfires, with a number sure to increase. some 10,000 structures are believed to be no more. governor gavin newsom is already taking swift action. he's already deployed national guard members, including 400 troops, to assist with traffic control and protecting critical infrastructure. soldiers also helping support law enforcement to prevent looting. so far, 20 people have been arrested and the governor is posting this on x. it's a warning for anyone taking advantage of evacuated
5:32 am
communities. looting will not be tolerated. we have a live look at the fires this morning. curfews are now in effect for the palisades and eaton fire evacuation zones. the curfews run between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. a lot of it is meant to combat all the looting going on. macy jenkins from our la station has more for us in altadena. this is where there is not much standing. all throughout altadena we have found residential streets that look just like this one. a home that once stood. you can see the front door crumbled to the ground, the chimney still standing, but a fire going on inside of the house. the remnants very similar as we go up and down the street. if you take a look over this way, you will see a transformer that once stood now is in the ground. power lines and parts of the street light. all of this debris just covering the sidewalk. and
5:33 am
just over to the left, there is a car that is burnt. obviously that person did not have enough time to get that car out of here. one of the things that the l.a. county sheriff's department says they are doing is working, along with cal fire, on human detection teams. they are going door to door to try to find the remains of people who did not make it out of the fire. the death toll for the eaton fire stands at four right now. the fire is still burning more than 13,000 acres, 0% contained. but personnel say they have 1500 people working to get this fire under control. that's the latest here reporting in altadena, macy jenkins. thank you, macy boy. they're trying to do whatever they can. the thing is, no one can control the winds. and it's been very strong. even when it starts to calm down, it's breezy and normal standards. so we are looking at some of the current wind speeds and gusts that we are getting around that area.
5:34 am
and the san gabriel mountains. we are still getting 60 mile per hour gusts in malibu, 48 and rancho cucamonga, 35, and calabasas, 23. and in altadena right now, 35. and the forecast for today will be for those winds to start to calm into the 20 to 30 mile per hour range around the area and then eventually later on tonight, much lighter wind, which may help with some of those water drops and some of the crews trying to attack the fires from the sky. and then looking at tomorrow, going into the afternoon, the wind will pick up as it normally does, but may gust to 40 to 45mph in parts of the san gabriel mountains. and then looking at the air quality, the air is very unhealthy right now. all around the area, from long beach to inglewood and then to la. we're seeing some moderate air quality, but notice that most of the plumes of smoke is blowing offshore, as this red flag warning continues through 6:00. we're still going to be monitoring for some very dangerous conditions into the
5:35 am
evening. laura. all right. thank you very much. kari. well, l.a. county emergency management leaders are apologizing for an evacuation alert mistakenly sent to millions. the alert that you see on the bottom there first people across l.a. county. it certainly rattled nerves, warning about an evacuation order for their area yesterday afternoon. then the problem was it was only meant for people near the kenneth fire burning in the valley. a second alert, the top one there, was sent a few minutes later telling people to disregard the first warning. authorities call it a technical error. the director of emergency management released a statement saying in part, quote, we understand that these wildfires have created great anxiety, hardship and distress among our residents and we are committed to sharing accurate information. well, amidst the disaster now unfolding in l.a. county is growing realization some residential hydrant systems are inadequate. now the problem is
5:36 am
coming to light from firefighters on the front lines of the most devastating fires. they're suggesting that those hoses have run dry at critical moments in the fire fight, and the water pressure can be just all over the place. l.a. county leaders don't deny the claims, which are resonating in bay area neighborhoods. this is where the fire risk runs high, including the oakland hills. a firefight with multiple fire hydrants drawing water from the system for several hours is unsustainable. the la situation really highlights how fragile some of the infrastructure is here, and also how dependent we are as firefighters on the water supply system. the head of the oakland firefighter union is now also trying to reverse oakland's recent decision to close two fire stations in the oakland hills. leaders made that move due to massive budget shortfall. now our coverage of the wildfires in southern california continues throughout the day. and tonight there will be a nbc
5:37 am
news special. it's called fire and ash devastation in l.a. right here on nbc bay area starting at 10 p.m. well, happening today, the supreme court hears a last ditch challenge to lt the imminent shutdown of tiktok, which is scheduled to happen on january 19th. today in the bay ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning. and ginger, experts say there's really no legal precedent for a case like this before. that's right, laura, and it is a pretty big deal, not just because tiktok has about 115 million users, but because today's challenge in the country's highest court will hear arguments pitting free speech versus national security. that is at the heart of this challenge, and the arguments for and against tiktok's ownership here in the country. so let's take it back to last year. april 2024 is when president biden signed the protecting americans from foreign adversary controlled applications act. he
5:38 am
signed it into law, and it received broad bipartisan support. it stipulated that unless bytedance sold tiktok to an american firm, it would be banned in 270 days. we haven't seen a sale or a deal yet, and the 270 days is set to expire on january 19th. the concern here is that a lot of users are just giving away a lot of information about themselves and about what they do, and that, you know, that could be used for consumer purposes. but one of the arguments is that in the aggregate, it could be used against the us in terms of national security. that is richard craig, a professor at san jose state. he says we have never seen anything like this. a ban on tiktok would have massive implications. so what does this mean for the everyday tiktok user? well, that could be outlined in a decision from the supreme court. but if no word
5:39 am
comes before january 19th, its users would still be able to possibly post or use the app if they have already downloaded it. but you might not be able to get updates or redownload it after that. now think about all the creators that make their livelihood off of tiktok. they're going to have to either change to a different platform or, you know, reinvent things altogether. today's challenge really has enormous implications specifically for those content creators and also in the larger conversation of free speech. we'll definitely be keeping a close eye on this one. laura in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay, a lot of people made a lot of money off of it that they have, let alone dancing. thanks, ginger. let's take a live look for you this morning. this is over in walnut creek. meteorologist kari hall, of course. b been traing what we can expect weather wise here in the bay area. look, we've dealt with some winds, but downtown on ice looks like a nice place to get out because it's not too cold. but you still get that kind of cold feel when you're on
5:40 am
the ice. yeah, we're trying to make weekend plans, so just keep in mind that you can still go ice skating in downtown san jose. downtown ice continues for another ten days, and we do have some nice weather for that. and all of the other events going on tomorrow in the south bay, we're going to have the sharks game, and temperatures at 7:00 will start out in the low 50s, a breezy wind, and into the evening. it's also going to be jacket weather, but of course with you being inside, you're not worried about that. but if you have tickets to go to gw party at the oakland zoo, it's going to be in the mid 60s for tomorrow and then dropping down into the upper 50s at 6:00 late at night. it's going to be in the mid 50s, so just wear the layers on sunday morning. starting out at golden gate park, there's the san francisco hot chocolate run. so if you're one of the runners expected to be there, it's going to be a chilly morning with some upper 40s and then throughout the rest of the morning into the low to mid 50s. if your weekend plans take you to the sierra, look at lake tahoe, where the high today
5:41 am
will be 49 degrees, dipping down to 21. make sure you're packing those extra layers for those cold mornings, but the afternoons are looking nice and mild with highs in the low 50s and then going to the coastline this weekend. santa cruz is going to be really nice and comfortable with highs in the low 60s and lots of sunshine. mike, you were hearing about a hit and run on the nimitz, and at one time i thought this semi truck involved was blocking all of 880. it's over here. do notice in san jose we have that first slowing. so it's not your lightest friday possible, but it is light because it's friday. this is the problem. so i'll give my little alert here for folks expecting no problems. you're jammed up south 880 from about 92 out of hayward, down into union city, just shy of whipple road, where there are your middle two lanes blocked. chp has just allowed folks to use that express lane, indicating how much backup they're expecting to form before they can clear the two vehicles from the roadway. the semi truck, though involved, took off from the scene. so if you did see anything and you get this
5:42 am
report, go ahead and relay what you know to chp. they're looking for more information. there's your little slowing for highway 37 and no slowing for highway four. that's typical for a friday. and there is a crash on the lower deck getting toward treasure island. but the slowing is on the incline heading over from the oakland side. no surprises there. as we look ahead, we are talking about tonight. we'll have traffic control across the antioch that will clear by tomorrow morning. but all weekend, starting tonight, this ridge the rio vista bridge, will be closed. this is for 55 hours reopening monday morning. but if you use that bridge, you're going to have to find a way around. and it's a long way around. look at that. you have to go all the way down and around or up and over. so there is a plan that you'll have to put in place to avoid the rio vista bridge all weekend. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. 541 right now. heartbreaking loss for a man who's experienced countless victories. coming up next on today in the bay. warriors head coach steve kerr opening up about losing his childhood home in the l.a. county wildfires.

i had starred in. temperatures are chilly right now in the low 40s, but there will be a big warm up happening through late morning into the afternoon. and we're back in the 60s for today, well above normal. and we were going to see this weather continue. we'll talk more about that and when we may see some rain coming up in a few minutes. and we do see some more traffic. we're looking from emeryville across the bay. beautiful lights in san francisco. i focus on the lights in motion. more of them. so there will be slowing because of that volume on the bay bridge. and i just checked, the metering lights have been activated on this friday. we have a lighter volume. yes, but look at the volume coming in.
5:47 am
there will be some backup forming. we'll track that at the bay bridge and around the bay. a live look at the state capitol this morning. that's where in a few hours from now, governor gavin newsom submits his budget proposal to lawmakers. the governor this week has laid out some of the highlights. he calls it a $322 billion budget that has no deficit. he says it sets aside money for first statewide transitional kindergarten program, where anywhere in the u.s, and that would provide free schooling to children starting at the age of four. california's finance director is expected to provide the full details on that plan at 10 a.m. 546 right now. the supreme court says donald trump must go forward with his sentencing today in new york city. scott mcgrew a surprise loss there for the president elect in the high court. it really was. i mean, he usually wins most of them. he gets his way. he lost this decision by just one vote, five, four. trump's lawyers had asked the high court to block todayay's hearing, claiming because trump
5:48 am
won the most recent election that made him immune from the criminal process, something that has no basis in law. trump has also argued the fact that he was president gave him immunity. the court agreed to that to a point, but the relationship with the adult film star and the cover up started before he was president the first time. he will, however, get a break on sentencing. the judge has indicated he will suspend the whole case with no jail time, because the president elect is going to become president in a little bit more than a week from now. trump was convicted by a jury o 33 counts of felony fraud. frankly, it's a disgrace. it's a judge that shouldn't have been on the case. he's a highly conflicted judge, and frankly, and they called for an appeal. so i read it and i thought it was a fair decision, actually. so i'll do my little thing tomorrow. they can have fun with their political opponent. now. trump will appear virtually today. again, no actual punishment. and a lot of this is
5:49 am
just semantics. there are legal nitpickers who say a person isn't truly a felon until he's gone through the sentencing. and so that's part of why trump has been trying to avoid all this. democratic pennsylvania senator john fetterman says he's accepted an invitation to meet with president elect trump at mar a lago. fetterman says he's open to meeting with anybody if that meeting will help him in his home state of pennsylvania. senator vance from ohio, meantime, not a senator anymore. j.d. vance resigned his office thursday so he can become vice president. vance served two years of his first six year senate term. president biden continues to get briefings on the fires here in california. and, as we reported earlier, promised fema money to help. president elect trump says there is no fema money, but that's just not true. the federal government will cover 100% of the cost for 180 days. this is going to pay for things like debris and hazard materia removal, temporary shelters,

first responders, salaries, and all necessary measures to protect life and property. ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky did a podcast with a conservative podcaster this week, reaching an audience he had not tried to reach before, and it's had millions of listens. this comes as trump has indicated he may be changing his mind over ukraine, walking back a promise to end the war before he becomes president, and changing that to within the first 100 days. this has raised hopes america will continue to support ukraine in its fight against russia. zelensky met with defense secretary lloyd austin in germany thursday, where he called on european countries to continue their support independent of what the united states does in the future. now, president biden was to meet with zelenskyy one last time in europe, but canceled that trip. laura, because of the fires. all right. thank you very much, scott. 550 right now. well, for the first time, warriors head coach steve kerr speaking out about losing his

childhood home this week in the palisades fire, his 90 year old mother still lives there. he says he's incredibly thankful that she made it out safely, but he's still trying to process what happened. that's my hometown and all my friends who are from there, pretty much. they've all lost, lost their homes, their their family homes, childhood homes. our whole high school's gone. the town looks like it has just been completely wiped out. it's surreal and devastating. kerr talked about it before last night's game in detroit, where the warriors beat the pistons. he also says his mom managed to grab a few photographs and other precious belongings, and that the memories lost will really hurt the most. well, there ongoing concerns about safety, not to mention air quality. they're forcing the nfl to move next monday's wild card game playoff game that is away from inglewood sofi stadium. now the rams were set to host minnesota. the league says that game will now be played in glendale, arizona. this is home to the arizona

cardinals. yeah, it was a good move. but i was thinking, why couldn't they have brought it here to santa clara? oh yeah. you know, move it up. yeah okay. okay. all right. well, that was just my little $0.02. let's see what'soing on this morning. on this friday, as we're getting started. we've been watching the air quality here as well. it's been pretty good. but it may become moderate going into the afternoon. and we've seen a little bit of that smoke coming in, as well as the wind calming down and allowing for that smoke to kind of spread out and settle across the region. but most of the smoke from the southern california wildfires is being pushed offshore. we're starting out this morning. temperatures in the upper 40s, even upper 30s in fairfield right now, it is 40 in sonoma and santa rosa and 53 in san francisco, 47 in san jose. and if you've called to check in on your family across parts of the south and out east, we are seeing a massive snow storm coming in. and this has been dumping snow over dallas,
5:53 am
over toward arkansas, memphis, getting a lot of snow, and it's even snowing very hard in atlanta this morning. so we know that's really going to shut things down. and may also have a ripple effect on travel across the country. and then back behind this system. we have some bitterly cold air coming in. in fact, this is a look at the current temperatures where we are seeing it now at 15 in denver, albuquerque at 19. and we are seeing also well below freezing temperatures all the way down to the south, where they are bracing for that cold to start to move into florida over the next few days. here we're feeling some mild temperatures and actually well above normal for this time of year. we're up to 62 degrees in novato and napa today, and a high of 64 degrees in atlanta or atlanta and oakland today, as well as martinez and 68 degrees today in san jose in morgan hill. tomorrow will be just a little bit cooler. it's going to
5:54 am
be windy, and we're going to talk about that wind in just a bit, but we are keeping the clear skies and a cool down in the forecast by the end of the weekend. so we have high pressure that's building off to our west. that continues to keep it dry, but there will also be a low that's dipping in from the north and pushing farther to the south, but kind of missing the bay area, but creating this pressure gradient that's going to give us an offshore wind over the next couple of days. look toward the end of the forecast there on next thursday. there's the possibility that southern california could see at least a little bit of rain. will continue to watch that. but for the bay area, we will once again have the concern of the high winds picking up coming in from the north. this is tomorrow morning at 3:00 and we're seeing the north bay winds and in some of the hills at 30, 40, possibly close to 50 mile per hour winds going into tomorrow morning. and then it's going to stay breezy throughout the day. and it's that dry offshore wind that we'll see. but we've had definitely a lot more rainfall
5:55 am
than they've had in socal. so at least we don't have the high concern of a wildfire danger. but there will be a wind advisory in effect through sunday morning and more sunshine in the forecast. once the wind calms down, the temperatures will dip in the early morning hours. next week we'll see our inland temperatures starting out in the upper 30s. and mike, you're seeing some slowing on this friday morning commute. so it's a lighter friday. but we still have a commute. and let me show you, this isn't the worst of it. it's not. now, the good news is i believe they've cleared the crash from the lower deck of the bay bridge. the upper deck westbound shows some slowing, and we do have the metering lights turned on at the bay bridge toll plaza, but no backup is visible right now. you see the slowing on the sensors. highway 37 typical pattern here. highway 4 not yet showing that, so that's great. but the big problem is heading south from here on the nimitz. you're jamming up now out of san lorenzo, san leandro, and in toward hayward. there's a crash in union city at whipple road in the middle. two lanes. folks are getting by, including the hot lane. the toll lane has allowed traffic flow because caltrans
5:56 am
does anticipate the continued build, which we see here. that will slow you getting south past the san mateo bridge. no major injuries, but there's still a lot of activity there.. vasco road showing a little bit of slowing here. there is a car fire eastbound, but it is a distraction for westbound coming in out of the altamont pass. that's for 580 pretty far out there. so that will be an issue, but not really so much for the main focus of our drive. it's adding a few minutes to that far east part of this drive, but then smooth in toward livermore and the dublin interchange. a note remember all weekend? starting tonight, we'll have that very critical rio vista bridge on highway 12 closed. it's a long workaround, so prepare to go south and around or up and around. if you have to make that crossing back to you. thanks, mike. happening now oakland police commissioners plan to discuss potential changes to the city's police pursuit policy. today's meeting comes following the remarks by governor newsom late last month. he calls on leaders to change their respective rules on police chases, and he's threatening to pull state resources if police departments don't comply.
