california, just like southern california. crews were helping us during our time of need. right now, at six bay area firefighters on the front lines in southern california. this as a new fire suddenly turns into a criminal investigation. we have the latest on the scramble to contain the flames before strong winds return. this is today in the bay. and good morning to
6:01 am
you. on this friday, i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. sadly, the number of confirmed deaths in l.a. county wildfires has now grown to ten, and first responders are fearful that that number will only go higher. it comes as an arrest is made in an arson investigation is getting underway in connection with a new fire in the san fernando valley. that new fire is the kenneth fire. it's one of the three largest fires now burning in southern california, along with the palisades and eaton fires. now, firefighters are trying to make as much progress as they can before the next round of those strong winds return today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us with some big developments overnight. from a drone strike to that sad growing death toll. yes. good morning to you, laura and marcus. so los angeles police have a man in custody who was detained by citizens who told investigators that they saw that man setting at least one fire. this happened in the area of the kenneth fire on the los angeles
6:02 am
ventura county border, north of malibu. now, while that investigation began, fire crews were still working fast with a lot of resources to try to get a handle on the flames. and they did. they gained 35% containment, but not before that fire burned a thousand acres in seven hours time. the evacuation orders have now lifted. now in the palisades fire, we now know two people died in the firestorm that ripped through nearly 20,000 acres and as many as 10,000 structures. aerial crews were key in gaining about 6% containment here, but at one point, a firefighting aircraft hit a drone and an investigation is now underway. it is illegal to interfere with firefighting. still no containment on the eaton fire in altadena, where the l.a. county sheriff confirmed that they know eight people died. he warns that there could be more deaths as investigators get in there, but they can't yet. they can't get in with those canines to search
6:03 am
for people because the fire is still raging in the area and evacuation orders are still in effect. 4000 structures are wiped out. there still could be more. and we talked with the santa rosa fire department, part of one of the bay area's strike teams. they're doing what we refer to as tactical patrol, where they're actually patrolling. a lot of the neighborhoods that were affected by the eaton fire in the altadena area, checking for hotspots. so we know so many of our bay area crews are there, 400 or rather 4000 federal firefighters will also be arriving on the front lines soon as well. part of president biden's response, which includes a commitment to cover 100% of the firefighting costs for 180 days, rather than the traditional 75. now, the national guard is also rolling onto the scene to help with things like roadblocks and areas that are hard to get to now. as of yesterday, there was still a curfew in effect in santa monica, and sheriff's deputies were ordered to enforce
6:04 am
trespassing laws around the clock in order to keep potential looters out of the disaster zone. we know at least 20 people were arrested for that, and still that fire danger continues. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that and kris. we've still seen some of these occasional wind gusts in the san gabriel mountains up to 60mph. and in malibu, we are still getting some breezes and gusts to 48mph. so even when we talk about the wind calming down, we're talking about it coming down from 100 from a couple of days ago. it's still going to be gusty and could spread some more fires. and around the altadena area this morning we're at about 35mph. the forecast still keeps those gusts pretty high into the afternoon. here we are at 1:00 and we're seeing about 20 mile per hour winds that will calm down to the single digits later on tonight, which would hopefully help with those fires getting more, the fire crews getting more containment. but unfortunately we are still expecting some high winds at
6:05 am
times throughout the day tomorrow and possibly again later on this weekend. so it will still be breezy that dry northerly wind. and we are now seeing that this is the third most destructive fire on record, according to cal fire. and so far, over 5000 structures destroyed. and we know the camp fire was the most destructive in history. that happened in 2018. back to you. all right. thanks so much, kari. and we know so many people across la county right now left with nothing after the fires destroyed their homes and everything inside. but, you know, volunteer effort now underway to help those in need. one critical push to help arose. thanks mostly to the power of social media. today, in the bay's velena, jones has a closer look for us from outside of the rose bowl. we are in a parking lot across from the rose bowl, where there is a grassroots effort, a volunteer effort here of a whole bunch of street vendors that have come together through the power of social media on tiktok and
6:06 am
galvanized everyone to bring donations here. i want to walk you through what we're seeing here in this parking lot. we ha seen dozens and dozens of volunteers come here and help out. we have donations from everything from little kids, so we have toys for children. we have baby wipes. we have diapers as we walk down this area. there's also hot food for those families that have been displaced that are in need. we have water here. we know water is critical right now for people. food, water. down over there you can see all the clothes that have been donated. there's coats, there's t shirts, there's shoes, there's blankets for children, for family members. all of this stuff has been donated by dozens and dozens and dozens of volunteers. they put a call out on social media through tiktok, and the
6:07 am
community has responded. and when we see these volunteers, they have been working overnight. they have been here for the past couple of days and just trying to help anyone that they can. we have talked to people who are here sleeping in their cars, who have just shared the emotional stories of how important these resources are in this heartbreaking time. many of them have nothing any longer, and so they have also shared with me they didn't know where to go until they saw this on social media. and so this is the response. we have seen excitement from these volunteers. they are just hoping to make an impact. even one of these volunteers was evacuated themselves. and so it really just shows you the power of community in these hard times. so, you know, volunteers tell us that they will be here for as long as needed. people can come
6:08 am
here. they don't have to show any id, any id or anything. these resources will be available for them. reporting in pasadena, velena jones for today in the bay. now, our coverage on the devastating wildfires continues, both on air as well as on our streaming platforms. today, our midday newscast is extended for an entire hour. we're also going to be monitoring the wildfires in southern california online anytime, so make sure you stay up to date by downloading our free nbc bay area app. 607 right now, just into our newsroom, police in oakland are investigating what is believed to be a new smash and grab involving a truck plowing through the doors of a business. we just got this video from outside a chevron convenience store on grand alongside lake merritt. there's a white truck with a water tank backed into the store. we haven't been able to get confirmation from police about what happened, but this would be the latest in a string of similar thefts since the start of the year. a live look

in san francisco, where new mayor daniel lurie is still rounding out his new team. the mayor planning to announce another appointment at 11:00 this morning. that's taking place at city hall. but this all comes in the wake of his announcement yesterday to freeze any new city hiring. his decision comes with the city facing a massive budget shortfall. lurie says the move is needed to bring spending under control. in a statement, he says in part, quote, r city is facing a major budget deficit and today the era of band-aid solutions is over. we are committed to fiscal discipline, giving san francisco the accountability they demand and focusing the government on doing the core things well. 608 this morning, as we take a live look out in san jose, meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect weather wise. and it's nice and clear across the bay area. for the most part. it has been nice and we had a beautiful day yesterday that continues today with some
6:10 am
lighter winds and also clear skies as we take a live look outside in san francisco. sunny and mild day ahead before the weekend. that dry offshore wind will pick up once again, mainly in the hills and mountains. we're going to see some higher wind gusts and looking ahead, it's going to be dry through most likely the rest of january. so looking at san jose, it's going to be in the upper 40s as we start out and then looking at sunshine and quickly warming temperatures. we're at 58 degrees at 10:. at lunchtime it is 67 degrees and headed for the upper 60s for today, it's going to be a little bit warmer in the south bay compared to the north bay, where we're going to see a high of 62 in napa and 66 today in dublin. mike, you've been looking around to find us some lower gas prices. yeah, and my local stations have gone up a few cents. but i did find a spot to shine a spotlight on pleasanton for their deal today. the lowest in the bay is 339 there at gulf. food mart, gas and garage. they do it all there
6:11 am
on first street in pleasanton. lowest in the bay in santa clara county. san jose holds their best price of 353 at excel gas and mart on north first street. and the bottom price here is san francisco with the highest number 355. one more time we're calling out double time on mission street. go to gasbuddy.com to check your area. we'll talk about two changes over here in the bay. friday is a lighter traffic flow, unusually slow for 880 southbound, but the crash has cleared at whipple. everything's out of the roadway. meanwhile, getting toward the bay bridge on the area just past treasure island. i've circled the slowing. we may have a crash in the right lane. you see things bunching up right around the tower, over on the right side of the screen. no backup at the toll plaza, but it may form if they slow those lights down. back to you. thank you. mike. 610 for you right now. santa cruz wharf open again for business. this is all following last month's partial collapse. but the question is exactly what went wrong there. well, coming up this morning, we have details on a new just launched investigation and brand new into the newsroom, the latest jobs
6:12 am
numbers. they are phenomenal. let's go out to the futures this morning. wall street may not and indeed is not happy with that because that means the fed is not going to be cutting rates anytime soon. well, we're also checking in on your new year's resolutions. how are you doing so far? whether you choose to work out more or save more money, we're going to te you why you're not alone if you find yourself already lacking. you're watching today in the bay.
6:13 am
pete g. writes, "my tween wants a new phone. how do i not break the bank?" we got you, pete. xfinity mobile was designed to save you money and gives you access to wifi speeds up to a gig. so you get high speeds for low prices. better than getting low speeds for high prices. right, bruce? -jealous? yeah, look at that. -honestly. someone get a helmet on this guy. xfinity internet customers, ask how to get an unlimited line free for a year, plus a free 5g phone.

to you. markets were closed yesterday in observation of president jimmy carter's funeral. they're back open this morning. so this is walgreens and this is kohl's. both are closing stores again. walgreens mostly in san francisco. kohl's will close stores in fremont, mountain view, napa, pleasanton and san rafael. plus five others elsewhere in california. pardon me. the company based in wisconsin, says it will offer severance packages to affected employees. calls aside, the job market continues to grow. we just got the latest jobs numbers much bigger than expected. about a quarter million jobs, actually. even more added. this comes after a much bigger than expected november report as well. unemployment rate falls to
6:16 am
4.1%. hourly earnings 3.9% last year. these are really strong numbers and more evidence. the fed probably will not lower interest rates soon. why would they. they're still trying to fight inflation. they're worried about future inflation because of tariffs. and the economy is motoring along just fine. our ginger conejero saab has been telling us about the big case in the supreme court today, where tiktok is fighting for its life. at issue is tiktok a threat to national security, like lawmakers say it is? or is it just a an app where people communicate, as is their first amendment right? and where do those two things intersect? when do threats outweigh free speech? if tiktok loses this case, the law says its parent company must sell the company the weekend after this one, or face removal from app stores. i spoke to frank mccourt recently. he used to own the dodgers. he wants to buy tiktok. would you change anything about the content on tiktok? because i'm going to sa,
6:17 am
sometimes when a billionaire buys a social network, he can screw it up. yeah, that's for sure. so that's why i don't want to. i say to people, this isn't about trusting me. this is about trusting themselves. people should should own their identity, control their identi, control their data, own their relationships, and decide how to permission its use and so on and so forth. so we'll get a decision from the supreme court fairly quickly. if it decides against tiktok that doesn't force bytedance to sell. it doesn't. you know, the parent company doesn't have to sell to frank or anybody else. we'll just see what happens. i don't i usually i have a pretty good idea this time. not a clue. well, the supreme court hasn't ever covered anything like this before. not this specific. right? no, it's dealt with the issue of free speech and national security, but not this. yeah. interesting. we'll see what happens. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. well, new at 6:00. cal osha investigators now

looking into the partial collapse of the wharf in santa cruz last month. three workers were sent into the water when strong waves caused the collapse of the outermost end. all three, luckily, were not injured. over the past few days, businesses at the wharf have reopened. the city says the wharf was deemed safe to reopen after a recently completed sonar and engineering assessment. the area that collapsed was in the midst of a renovation. happening today, a landmark san francisco hotel will celebrate its historic landmark status. the ritz-carlton opened on nob hill in the early 1990s, and the neoclassical building, originally owned by the metropolitan life insurance company, is dating back to 1909. the building actually gained landmark status in 1984, but today the hotel will unveil a plaque and holding a ribbon cutting ceremony. that event is planned for 1 p.m. you know, also today, maybe you're starting to think bitten off a little bit more than i can chew
6:19 am
when it comes to those new year's resolutions. well, if so, i want you to listen up here. that's right. today is also officially, unofficially known as quitters day or the day. many people decide just to call it quits on that new year goal. yeah, it's actually january 10th. a survey by the online platform statistica finds 21% of americans vowed to save more money in 2025. about the same number are planning to eat healthier or exercise more. a separate poll by forbes health recently found the average new year's resolution lasts less than four months. but come on, don't call it quits just yet. no, but you know what? if you do, just say, you know what? i'm starting off the year doing what i want to do, and that's nothing. oh, i thought you were going to say starting off the year tomorrow or monday. just always next year. that's right. so we hope. that's good to see. in the second week of january. it's been quite a couple of weeks already. but you can do it. come on. yeah. you know what. the next day is always a new day. there you go. look at
6:20 am
it like that. but it is one thing we know for sure. it's friday. yeah. that it is. yes. and as long as the sun comes up, we're all good. so there you go. you're going to see some nice weather today. it's starting out chilly as we're getting out the door. take a look at some of these numbers and what you'll feel as you're heading to work or school this morning. it's at 47 in san jose and 49 in martinez. 52 in san rafael. while in santa rosa, it is now 41 degrees. cool start to the day, but it's also nothing in comparison to the wild weather that we are seeing across parts of the midwest and the south with this big snowstorm that's been coming through. it snowed so hard in dallas yesterday. well, now it's starting to wind down and it's moving off towards the ohio and tennessee valley. even atlanta is getting some heavy snow at this point. as we get a closer look, we've been watching this big storm system that's also been ushering in some bitterly cold temperatures. so we're seeing a lot of teens and 20s currently across areas
6:21 am
just to the east of california. but we're still feeling some nice mild weather today. we're headed for the upper 60s for san jose with low to mid 60s in the north bay, and it will be a little bit cooler tomorrow and breezy with highs in the mid 60s for tomorrow afternoon. we're going to see a low that's moving just to the east of us, producing a pressure gradient with this high pressure that's been dominant in our weather, keeping it dry, but will also give us that offshore wind that will pick up as we go into tomorrow, as well as early sunday. still no chance of rain, but look at the very end of the forecast. possibly a very weak storm system moving into southern california by the end of next week. we are already seeing the fingerprints of la nina. this is the cooler than normal water sea surface temperatures near the equator. what happens is this pretty much affects the global weather patterns that we see. so when the water here in the equator is cooler than normal, we start to
6:22 am
see a shift in the jet stream as well as the weather systems that develop above that cool water for what that usually means for our winters. overall, it can shift the storm track so it can make it wetter from the bay area on northward, but then could also make it drier for southern california, as well as areas all across the south. and this is basically what we're seeing here as we take a look at our outlook for the next couple of weeks. with the potential of well below average rainfall. and we are already seeing that now expecting this weather pattern to continue with dry conditions, sunshine, and at times, those winds picking up as temperatures drop here and there. but it will be a cooler start to next week, and highs in the upper 50s and low 60s. mike, you've got some delays going on. yeah. the first you don't like to hear this any day, but especially on a friday. it's the bay bridge where it looks like the activity. somewhere around this tower things start to move more smoothly into treasure island, but westbound, your commute direction is jamming up now on
6:23 am
the incline because of activity in lanes on the right side of the roadway there on the span that caused them to slow down the metering lights. a quick build here at the toll plaza. this is a lot of congestion there outside of the toll plaza. this map is moving okay though. it's friday. more slowing. southbound 880 as the crash cleared from whipple. it started to show the build in the volume. so that's why we still have that slowing right here in hayward. and slowing out of the altamont because of a car fire. eastbound. that's westbound. that's slowing your commute. back to you. thanks, mike. it is 622 right now. coming up next on today in the bay nbc bay area response. millions of families like yours can file their federal tax returns for free. starting today. i'm consumer investigator chris cura. i'll investigator chris cura. i'll showhm known for sharing what you love. no one wants to be known for cancer, but a treatment can be. keytruda is known to treat cancer.

washington. well, this morning, some staggering numbers out of l.a. county as those fires continue to ravage that area. authorities now confirming ten deaths with the number. shorter increase. some 10,000 structures are now believed to be no more. governor gavin newsom is taking swift action. he's already deployed national guard members, including 400 troops, to assist with traffic control and protecting critical infrastructure. now, soldiers will also be helping law enforcement there to prevent looting. so far, 20 people have been arrested. we have a live look this morning at the palisades fires this morning from a helicopter above. curfews are now in effect for the palisades and eaton fire evacuation zones. the curfews are running between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. a lot of this is to combat looting. brittany hope from our l.a. station is in topanga this morning, where water drops are helping teams make some progress on the palisades fire. good morning. from the pacific coast

highway. we're here on the intersection of topanga canyon boulevard. you can see chp still closing the highway down. and, of course, topanga is shut down as well with fire crews here. now, this morning, this is the first time that we've been able to get into topanga. it's been a struggle to get here because of so many downed power lines. rockslides. the roads haven't been safe, but we were able to get in today. now, before we show you that video, we do want to show you just here at the base, if you've driven pch here in southern california, you probably will remember the large antique store. so colorful, so many statues that were here greeting you to topanga, greeting you toward malibu. now all of this is gone. all right, let's take you inside of topanga. the good news this morning, finally, we were able to see water drops happening over those tall flames. it seems that this area of topanga, inside that canyon, with all of that vegetation and brush, is really the center of the firefight. this is the most flame that we have seen since
6:34 am
yesterday. good news though, the whole village of topanga still standing. we saw a lot of homes still standing. but those flames were certainly getting very, very close to homes. so we know that the community here is on high alert for some perspective. we have the pacific palisades on one side of us, and we have malibu and the other. topanga is right in the center. brittany, hope back to you. well, let's turn things over to meteorologist kari hall. she has been following all of this. certainly been a busy week down there. and just looking at those numbers behind you. not letting up much. yeah, i was just coming back from my computer. just checking in on some of the current wind speeds. and we're stil getting a 60 mile per hour wind gusts in the san gabriel mountains, so it's still pretty gusty, even though we are seeing it calming down from the 100 and even 80 to 100 mile per hour winds that we had just a couple of days ago. it's still very windy this morning, and some of those higher elevations, and the forecast for today is for the wind to gradually start to subside at noon. we're still
6:35 am
looking at 20 to 30 mile per hour winds. and then into this evening only about ten mile per hour winds. so that's some really great news for the crews. but there still will be some of those high wind gusts that will continue throughout the weekend, up to 40 to possibly 50mph from saturday to sunday. we are now seeing that the palisades fire is the third most destructive on record, according to cal fire, with over 5000 structures damaged. we know that that camp fire was very destructive, the worst in history for california. and that just happened in 2018. the bbs fire was second with just a little bit more than what we are seeing for the palisades fire. back to you. well, thanks, kari. here in the bay area, one woman with deep ties to southern california now doing her part to try to help fire victims. ariel gordon macy is a well known celebrity jewelry designer. her business is based in berkeley, but she lived in pacific palisades for years. she and her

6:39 am
country. so let's take it back to last year, back in april of 2024. that is when president biden signed the protecting americans from foreign adversary controlled applications act. he signed it into law, and it received broad bipartisan support. it stipulated that unless bytedance sold tiktok to an american firm, it would be banned in 270 days. now, we haven't seen a sale or a deal yet, and the 270 days is set to expire on january 19th. the concern here is that a lot of users are just giving away a lot of information about themselves and about what they do, and that, you know, that could be used for consumer purposes. but one of the arguments is that in the aggregate, it could be used against the us in terms of national security. that is richard craig, a journalism professor at san jose state. he says we have never seen anything like this. now, a ban on tiktok

would have massive implications, but what does it mean for the everyday user? well, that could be outlined in a decision from the supreme court. but if no word comes before january 19th, it's possible that users would still be able to post or use the app if they've already downloaded it, but you might not be able to get updates or redownload it after that. so think about all the content creators that we know make their livelihood on those apps. they're going to have to change things up or use a different platform. but really, whether you're talking about free speech, national security, or, you know, content creators, bottom line, this has those massive implications. laura. so this is definitely something we're going to keep an eye out on. yes. most definitely. all right. thanks for all the details there, ginger. 640 for you this morning as we take a live look out at walnut creek folks on the road there, meteorologist kari hall monitoring what we can expect weather wise out there. and it's been pretty much a nice few

folks crossing the bay bridge. yeah, we had the issue on the span itself that has been cleared. all vehicles have been cleared slowly off to the san francisco side, so the flow on the span is much better. they should start to speed up those metering lights making this backup move. we see it moving now. that's good. but it is a good backup for a friday. the approaches are not a problem, but there is a crash. actually west 80 still through around el portal. the crash still in the center divide slowing you through san pablo. everything else looking more mild than your typical monday through thursday commute. of course, because it is friday recovery. hayward but slowing for the san mateo bridge after the earlier crash cleared there and a slow drive out of the altamont getting a little better now that that car fire looks like it's out. back to you. all right, mike, thank you. 641 right now, a new urgent warning for some pet owners coming up. a bay area city seeing a dangerous outbreak among its coyote population. the threat it may pose, especially to your four legged friends. the u.s. supreme court says donald trump has to go forward with his sentencing. that is getting
