more than 9,000 structured have been damaged or dest it is going to be a beautiful morning. but we want to start, as we always do with the news. at the top of the news, unfortunately, those devastating wild fires in california.deo showing the destruction from the palisades fire street after street, neighborhood after those fires are raging. and a new fire broke out. officials fear this could only add to the rising death toll. >> nearly 180,000 residents have been forced from their homes. nearly 9,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed. take a look at this drone video showing the destruction from the palisades fire street after street, neighborhood after neighborhood all reduced to ash. >> we got it covered this morning. let's start with tom llamas in pacific palisades this morning. hey, tom. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. the problems here are still mounting. the air quality is low. new flowers are popping up as you mention, and even in the palisades where they have lost everything, look at this water gushing. they are having fire hydrants and the water pressure, and you can see there are open mains all over this area gushing out water, when firefighters need water like that to fight those ongoing fires. there's also a potential curfew they may implement from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. because these

areas are dangerous, and people are looting. i want to see this. you can't even tell what this was. you can't tell what was inside here. the seats, the steering wheel, it's all gone, and then over here to give you a sense of really how hot the fire burned, this is what firefighters tell me is molten steel. it literally was so hot, it burned the steel off those cars. this morning as crews try to contain those massive los angeles wild fires, new popping up. the kenneth fire igniting in the west hills area. first responders moving in. helicopters and fixed wing aircraft trying to contain the fires from the skies as overnight the santa ana winds kicked up again. in the pacific palisades, the fire that took so much is still growing. >> it is devastating. all my neighbors across town, their houses are gone. >> a view from above showing the scorched earth of the devastated area.

many homes along the iconic highway in ruins, while the fight to save property and lives goes on. crews working nonstop for some 60 hours straight. >> it's been pretty hectic. you got bodies from house to house. the winds pick up and another house catches on fire. >> so many across the region now connected by loss. >> i do know this. we will rebuild, and we will rebuild together. >> reporter: greg and jennifer among many in the palisades who lost their home. the couple and their three daughters scrambling to get out alive. >> she keeps asking to go home. and i -- we are home now. you know, wherever we go, that is our home. >> similar scenes taking place where the eaton fire has claimed four to five thousand structures. >> i don't know if i'm going to come back from this. >> reporter: flames traveling all the way up to the base of

mount wilson, threatening a historic observatory and critical antennas and transmitters used to broadcast local tv to millions in the area. the mayor of los angeles requesting support from the national guard and promising to rebuild. >> we are going to clear the red tape and unnecessary delays and costs. >> reporter: among resident, anger is growing amid reports of hydrants running dry, which city officials say is due to high demand. one fire victim confronting california's governor. >> why was there no water in the hydrants, governor? is it going to be different next time? >> it has to be. >> reporter: one of the nation's most beloved regions now coping with an unimaginable loss. >> reporter: as we're seeing new areas destroyed by these wild fires, the fire fight continues. i do want to show you some video. this is a fire fighting aircraft known as the super scooper. what it does is flies over water. it scoops it up. it's a giant plane that can

scoop up water, and in this condition, the pacific, a drone crashed into one just yesterday joining us is one of the section chiefs for the l.a. county fire department. chief, i savannah.t is good >> tom, thank you. joining us is one of the section chiefs for the l.a. county fire department. chief, it is good to see you. i feel like these fires keep popping up. what is the status this morning? >> thank you guys for having me. hoda, congratulations on your successful career.g? >> thank you guys for having me. hoda, congratulations on your successful career. currently the status of the currently the status of the palisades fire, we're just under 20,000 acres. we have firefighters on scene. palisades fire, we're just under not just throughout the entire state of california, but throughout our western states as well. i want to remind residents that when we issue an evacuation warning, people need to be ready to go. that means your bags need to be packed, your belongings, your pets need to be ready to go in the carriers you have to establish for them and you need an exit strategy in case the power fails in your garages and battery backup. have those thing evacuate, you're ready to go when you are ordered to

evacuate. >> that just underscores also, chief, that this is an ongoing crisis. this isn't over. it is still happening. evacuation orders are still going out. yesterday was a bit of a reprieve from the wind. but the worries are it will pick up again. what is your biggest concern right now? >> our biggest concern and always the most primary concern is ensuring the safety of the public. so the weather has been challenging firefighters. you can see in the pictures, those hoses put out 1,000 gallons per minute. the wind is spreading everywhere. when you get 30, 40 miles an hour winds, it doesn't help us make effective water drops. once we get those dry winds, the hot winds, the water sprays everywhere. so weather has been a challenge.

>> all right, chief. we want to say thank you so much. good luck to you and all the firefighters out there. >> thank you. >> you can just hear the exhaustion in his voice. these firefighters have been working 48-hour shifts or longer. by the way, they're from some of these communities as well. communities waking up to brutal cold and ice and snow. a major winter storm is sweeping across the south. states of emergency declared as more than 100 million people brace for impact. kathy park is in nashville for us. good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah. good morning to you. yeah, the snow is headed this way. it is already falling in other parts of the state here in nashville. when it is all over, we're looking up to 6 inches of snow. tennessee declared a state of emergency and some parts of the

south could be looking at their biggest snowstorm in years. this morning much of the south in the grip of a rare winter storm. >> our equipment is ready to go. our crews are ready to go and we're ready to tackle this inclement weather head-on. >> reporter: heavy snow blanketing kansas, oklahoma, arkansas and the texas panhandle. residents in kentucky bracing for round two of winter weather, barely recovering from another storm. >> it is like a virtual skating rank. >> reporter: nashville, atlanta and little rock all expected to see snow and in some cases ice. while in arkansas, shoppers nearly cleared out this grocery store. >> this is what happens when you come to sam's and it snows in arkansas. >> reporter: officials warning drivers to take it slow or stay off the roads altogether. >> our volume of traffic accidents is roughly double what it normally would be on a typical day. so we still encourage folks who don't have to be out, don't go out. >> reporter: in georgia, crews have been pretreating interstates, working 12-hour shifts ahead of the dangerous conditions, while travelers are gearing up for delays. reaching as far as florida, catching some tourists off

guard. >> i thought i would be in shorts and a t-shirt. more like, no, bring a light jacket. >> reporter: as this winter storm pushes across the south, likely snow won't be melting until early next week. savannah? >> kathy, thank you. mr. roker has his eyes out west. >> yeah, guys. so, again, we have these red warnings. winds today gusting up to 60 miles an hour. the humidity critically dry. the problem is winds are going to die down a bit. here's the deal. the strong high pressure over the great base has been driving these santa ana winds. now tonight and tomorrow, things will weaken up a bit. this next high pressure system moves into the southwest. into next week, this intensifies and it kicks those santa ana winds back up again. any vegetation that hasn't

burned is already drier now because of all this dry air. so, again, another dangerous situation into next week. now we go on to what we were seeing with kathy park. 100 million people from texas to the east coast, winter storm warnings and watches. you can see it start to fire up in nashville. nashville may see anywhere from 2 to 5 inches of snow. dallas picked up more snow than new york city, and we have a more dangerous situation with icing. anywhere from a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch of ice.

good morning. it is 726. i'm laura garcia. breaking news right now. did you feel it? a 3.7 magnitude earthquake rattling san francisco and the peninsula. it happened at 702 this morning. it was centered just off the coast of san francisco, close to the zoo. we know that some people beyond that area felt it as well. i'm getting reports from people online from san jose to sunnyvale as well. let's turn to meteorologist kari hall. what are you learning? we are seeing that that earthquake happened on the san andreas fault that goes offshore, right? just to the west of san francisco. and so as we monitor for any damage, there still may be the possibility of a few more aftershocks. so we're watching out for that possibility. it is all clear as people are waking up and heading out, and we'll be watching out for any more reports that we see there. but as far as the weather, it's going to be sunny and mild today and the weekend does turn windy, so we're watching for the gusty winds as well as the dry january weather.

california. >> we are also witnessing neighbors helping neighbors. >> liz kreutz is there to shine a light on their stories. liz, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah. we have just seen so much devastation here over the last few days. this was an auto shop. it's one o of the budings destroyed in altadena. i spoke to man that risked his life to stay back to help neighbors in their greatest time of need. shocking scenes still unfolding in southern california, where flames continue to swallow up everything in sight. the loss unimaginable. >> she loved her family. >> reporter: she says her 83-year-old grandmother died inside her home. >> it is devastating. we didn't expect to lose her so tragically. >> it burned for hours and hours. >> reporter: some residents becoming heroes. when scott k. saw flames, he up garden hoses.ines and picked

he teamed up with a small group of neighbors. >> i can't control any of this, but i can turn on the garden hose and turn off a gas line. >> reporter: and those small things made a big difference. >> i don't know if they did or not. i think he is a hero. >> reporter: in pasadena, a crowd gathering overnight to hand out supplies for the victims. >> this is now a refuge for the entire community, not just the jewish community. >> reporter: and first responders showing courage in the face of adversity. and jamie lee curtis pledging $1 million to relief efforts. james wood highlighting a local pharmacy. the pharmacy's owner saying not helping was not an option. >> that's what community pharmacy does. we definitely put others before ourselves. >> reporter: and several companies are offering free or discounted resources to fire evacuees. planet fitness is offering folks a place to go shower and use wifi. and several restaurants around

about up there. i had a friend who lost her house and she said she went to target yesterday and she had no clothes and she said, do you have any help for fire victims. and the woman behind her said, i will buy you a toothbrush and toothpaste. i'm a single mom. i run a business. i have a lot of people working for me. but what is the future? what will be the air quality? can we rebuild? there is so much unknown. i think the important thing is for us to stick together, for us to let each other know that we care, that we're there for them. but acknowledge that we don't really know what tomorrow is going to be like because it is not contained and the winds can still blow either way is what we're being told. >> maria, all those organizations we talked about, we will have them on our website, including organizations that are aiding relief efforts. they will all be vetted. >> and we're here for the long haul. >> this is going to be a long haul story. >> it is, yeah.

unrelenting winds and dry conditions, too. we are getting a closer look at what the fires have left behind. tom, good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah. good morning to you. we mentioned that water issue. this is flowing out from the neighborhood that has already been completely destroyed as firefighters are battling that pressure problem when it comes to fire hydrants. new fires have popped up. firefighters yesterday trying to get control of that fire as those other fires are still growing in size. only a little of those fires have been contained right now. you can see the type of destruction they do here. it's hard to even see colors here. everything is a shade of black and everything is completely gone. all of this as there are new questions about what's going to happen with insurance. a lot of people were kicked off their insurance just before this fire took place, and these people may not get covered for this so they're asking their insurance commissioners and

you guys very much. all right? i love you and they're going to come with me whether they like it or not. >> we love you, hoda. >> love you guys. >> brace for your third and fourth hours coming up. good morning. it is 856 on marcus washington breaking and happening now parts of san francisco and the peninsula rattled this morning by a 3.7 earthquake. it was centered off the coast near the san francisco zoo. now, the struck just after 7:00. we know a lot of people felt it, some as far away as the south bay, but there are no reports of any damage. i want to go to meteorologist kari hall, because i know you've been looking at this fault line, and this is a major fault line for us. very active. yes, it is the san andreas fault where this earthquake occurred just off shore of san francisco. so with the magnitude 3.7 earthquake and it happening off the coast, maybe not as many people felt

that, but this is one of our most active faults. we get about 36,000 quakes in the state each year, and most of them are below a 4.0, which is what we saw this morning. but still, that reminder that we do need to be prepared, and we haven't seen any major aftershocks afterwards. so that's some good news. we are going to continue with sunshine for the rest of today, and highs in the mid to upper 60s and a nice weekend ahead.
