i can't even go back to a place that i called home. socal firestorm. hitting hard and hitting home. those nonstop wildfires destroyed a bay area college football player's family's home. we'll show you how the cal community is supporting him and others. good afternoon, i'm chris chmura. welcome to nbc bay area news at 4:30. i wish we had better news to tell you, but the devastation continues across los angeles. destructive wildfires are continuing to burn through neighborhoods and force people out of their homes. powerful winds and dry conditions today are feeding at least five fires that have wiped out more than 30,000 acres. and for perspective, that charred footprint is larger than the city of san francisco's footprint. also, officials confirm the fires have killed at least 11 peopl new video shows us the gigantic scale of the largest of the l.a. fires, the

monster palisades fire. this relentless blaze has burned through more than 21,000 acres and destroyed about 5000 structures, all in just three days and no signs of stopping. currently, it isnly 8% contained. a man living in the pacific view estates neighborhood stayed behind to help homes burning all around him. we stayed and we had water pressure and about 50 pounds, and weere able to use it here and there and help the fire department, you know, to point out fires that were erupting. scary stuff. to the east, the eaton fire near altadena and pasadena is close behind. it's ripped through almost 14,000 acres, destroying more than 5000 structures since tuesday night. and right now it's only 3% contained. the national guard is now on the ground at both the palisades and eaton fires. the troop's goal is to free up

police officers and firefighter, also crack down on any looting and to enforce curfews. a promising update for the kenneth fire burning at the border of ventura and l.a. counties. firefighters there have stopped forward progress. the fire burned 1000 acres. luckily no structures. cal fire says the kenneth fire is currently 35% contained. officials lifted all evacuation orders and warnings, so some people are returning to their homes. meanwhile, president biden is trying to ensure no expenses spared for los angeles. yesterday, mr. biden announced for the next six months, the feds will cover all disaster response costs from the wildfires. that means it will pay for things like removing debris, setting up temporary shelters and paying for first responders. this morning, president biden and vice president harris received a briefing from governor newsom and l.a. mayor karen bass. mr. biden pledged that he will allow he wants los angeles to be built back better than before. we're

going to need the united states congress to follow up with appropriations to help provide for significant help for our fellow americans who need this help. the vice president and i have initiated every federal agency from the department of defense on every federal agency. now to a live look from mount wilson near pasadena. you can see smoke from the fire still blanketing the area. in the meantime, governor newsom extended an invitation to president elect trump today. the governor invited mr. trump to come to california to meet with fire victims. see the damage himself from the ground. nbc's brittany hope has a look at what the president elect might witness if he accepts the invitation. reporter the devastation is just unbelievable. home after home is destroyed. pieces of home somehow. possibly with the winds. and that's heavy. i don't
4:35 pm
know how that got picked up. the winds are so powerful. for some reason, this migrant content truck still standing. a lot of the chimneys still standing. but that's about it. cars are destroyed. multiple cars. all of these palm trees just look frozen in time. and it's like this on both sides of the street, and it's just devastating. again, kingsport is a street in malibu vista are two blocks, two streets that people have been asking us to check out for them. obviously, people haven't been able to access their homes here since tuesday, so this is the first time we've been able to access it. and to show you this, and i'm just so apologetic and i'm so sorry for folks who are watching this and are learning the fate of their home. there are a few homes here on kingsport that are standing,
4:36 pm
but it is definitely the minority. if we turn around there behind us, there's a burned out car right on the corner. but a lot of these homes here on malibu vista drive are burned as well. but again, sometimes there's homes that survive that white home. it looks like a newer build here is still standing. certainly looting is a concern from the rubble and the homes that are still standing. and at least from where we are, we've seen a heavy law enforcement presence. and the folks who did choose to stay here, some of whom have have been able to keep their homes, they tell us that they're really, really grateful for that, but they're watching it as well. but block after block here, just completely gone right by the ocean. it's just it's just unimaginable. so that's what we're seeing again on kingsport, just off malibu vista drive. all right brittany hope for us. thanks so much. the weather has been vital here, especially the wind. rob mayeda

is here. how's the wind today? because it had been whipping for days and days. well, this is the good news for air crews especially. and crews on the ground. we had these wind speeds when the fire started was about 40, 50, 60mph. but today, mostly wind gusts below 20mph. so they've been able to make up some ground there in terms of getting some back fire set and containment lines, trying to get some containment on the palisades fire. but it is still a very active fire. the satellite detected heat mostly on the north side here. so that's actually better news for places like brentwood and santa monica. have. the more active part of the fire has been in less populated areas. as we take you into the eaton fire as well, here's another location that has benefited from less wind over the last 24 hours. but here's the problem with the eaton fire. more of the activy is down around the altadena area and east of la canada flintridge, so with less wind, fire crews are able to make some ground up. but you saw the view from the mount wilson cam. all the unhealthy air across southern california. look how those offshore winds
4:38 pm
continue to keep unhealthy to hazardous air quality across the l.a. basin. now here's the issue as we head into the weekend, wind speeds, which did come down today, are set to rise up again by as we head into sunday morning here, wind gusts back up there to 40 to 60mph. high wind watches and red flag warnings still in effect for the mountains of southern california, and our own weather as we move forward into the weekend. about to see some dry, gusty conditions as well. a closer look at our own wind advisory coming up in our forecast in about eight minutes. rob, thanks very much. a cal football player is one of the many who've lost their home in the southern california wildfires. the eaton fire destroyed camden jones's family home. nbc bay area's ian cull spoke with the family today. and the player? how is everybody holding up? they're having a tough time and, you know, they say they just go through waves of emotions hourly and daily. it's completely understandable. camden is a freshman tight end for the cal football team, and has lived in altadena for nearly
4:39 pm
a decade. when the winds picked up and his family lost power wednesday, they evacuated and just hours later, his dad returned to check on the house and found it was gone. today, i spoke with camden and his sister chelsea, and it's just sad to see that there's nothing left of it. like, i can't even go back to a place that i called home. we feel for our community and for all those who have lost their homes and their businesses. altadena is a beautiful town with people that know and love each other. i think so many people in our area can absolutely sympathize and empathize with them, because so many of you went through this and you name it, whatever. fire so many of those fires over the years, over the past decade. yeah. so all right, let's start with some of the obvious things that so many of us dealt with. where are they staying right now? what kind of support do they have? yeah. so they're actually staying at a hotel in long beach right now, which is good for as long as it takes
4:40 pm
until they find a new place. the good news, though, too, is the team mom from the cal football team has also set up a gofundme for the jones family, and that effort has already raised more than $42,000. but the family is also clear they're one of thousands of families whose homes were devastated by the fires, and they say they're deeply thankful for all the support. so really grateful for the entire cal football team and my coaches and all of my teammates and my family. just everybody that's close to me right now and just holding me in tight. it's really all i got right now. it's just the people around me. it's all i have left, you know? and camden says he's focused on his family for the moment, but intends to return to berkeley late next week for the start of the new semester. you'll hear more from both of them coming up at 530. all right, ian, thanks very much. we look forward to it. and if they have trouble, let them know they can call our consumer team. okay. all right. a bay area woman with deep ties to southern california is now doing her part to help fire victims. celebrity jewelry designer ariel gordon
4:41 pm
messier has a business in berkeley. what? she lived in pacific palisades for years. messier and her husband started their family there before moving to the bay area. she says many friends just lost everything. i have friends who both lost their homes, as well as their businesses that have been in the palisades for over 15 years. some jewelry stores that i sell to, i have other friends whose children's schools burned down. i have other friends who were evacuating their home and had to abandon their cars in the middle of the street with their children and flee fires because the car in front of them exploded and they had to evacuate on foot. i mean, it's just full of apocalyptic setting that you. it's every parent's worst nightmare. messier says she's helping organize corporate donations to help wildfire victims. for more details and see how you can get involved, you can visit today in the bay,

evening. please join us for an nbc news special called fire and ash devastation in la. watch it right here on nbc bay area starting at 10:00. while southern california is dealing with wildfires, we're feeling earthquakes up here in the bay area. two jolts rattling some nervesoday at the san francisco zoo. also, is this tiktok's last chance? the social media platform makes a plea to the u.s. supreme court to avoid a ban that is set to take place within ten days. our scott budman tracked today's arguments and will let us know which way he thinks

relatively active fault line. so small quakes? well, they're pretty common. we checked with the zoo, by the way, and no damage or injuries to report there. thankfully, experts say while there was a relatively strong aftershock a 3.0 around 11 a.m, there is little cause for concern. so when you have one isolated earthquake like that, or even a few within a few days, it's usually not a cause for concern. not all big earthquakes come with precursors and not small earthquakes are indicative of something else that's going to come. however, experts also say every earthquake is a reminder to be ready for the next big one. they recommend having a go bag ready with essentials in it, plus an emergency water supply somewhere on your property. san francisco has a new fire chief today, mayor daniel lurie announced he's appointing sffd veteran dean crispin to the department's top spot. lurie made the announcement at city hall today alongside crispin, who has spent 34 years with the department.
4:47 pm
crispin's family and other city leaders and firefighters were also on hand to mark the moment. during his three decades with the department, crispin was recognized for bravery three times. he was also part of the s.f. team that responded to new york city after the september 11th attacks. today, he said one of his top goals for the department is to ensure it remains in touch with the community it serves. my goal for this department is to ensure it remains in touch with the community it serves. department members must concern themselves not just with the beauty of the fire engine or ambulance, but with the beauty and health of the neighborhood. i will ask our members to engage with the public to form bonds that will move our city forward. crispin will replace sandi tong, who has served as the interim chief. also today, 31 san francisco firefighters deployed to southern california to assist firefighters down there. the fight to keep tiktok alive in the u.s. went to the united states supreme court today. at issue can congress ban the

social media app because of who owns it? let's bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman. you've been tracking this story for months. you listened to the hearing today, right? the whole thing. all right. so any idea which side you think the justices are leaning toward? it's hard to say. kris. it's a little early, and the justices have not so far made their decision public. but, you know, guessing from some of the questions, they seemed a little skeptical about tiktok's claim that this harms the first amendment rights of its users. and that's really the argument that tiktok is putting forward. so we don't know how it will go. but most of those who listen to that are far more experienced in legal matters than me seem to think they were leaning in a direction that is not pro tiktok, but instead would support the ban. okay, and we're about ten days away from this going into effect, right? ten would be the 19th of january. yes. okay. so could president elect trump step in? could the company consider selling part of itself or something to avoid the
4:49 pm
ban? what do you think? two great questions. one, let's talk about the selling because the ban would say tiktok, in order to survive, would have to be sold or spun off somehow by its chinese parent company, bytedance. if that happens and tiktok becomes property of an american company, it survives. if not, the law is it gets banned. as far as president elect trump, well, president trump could possibly step in and say, let's put a stay on this and delay it, but there will be no president trump on january 19th. that doesn't happen until inauguration day the following day. so the 19th is a date that we will still have a president biden, who supported the ban of tiktok. and i must also say that president trump did. back when it was passed, both sides really came together to agree on this. but now president elect trump is saying he wants to delay things, but he can't do it on the 19th. okay. crystal ball. what is what does it look like on the 19th? if tiktok is banned in the united states, it looks like a
4:50 pm
lot of people still have tiktok on their phones and they can use it. but and i don't know how fast this would happen, google a no longer have tiktok in yourn app store available for download, and b you can no longer allow tiktok to therefore push any updates or bug fixes to the phones that have tiktok on. so you would have essentially a lame duck app, still a very powerful app on your phones for at least a certain amount of time. while the two sides still try to figure it out, and maybe somebody comes in and buys tiktok from bytedance. at this point, we're talking about a whole lot of money because this is an extremely valuable company. you've been doing this a long time. you ever seen anything like it? not really. it's because of the nature of what both sides agree on. hey, it's dangerous to have a chinese owned company. we do a lot of business with china and other countries. so you really don't normally see this and you'll be watching it for us? absolutely. scott, thanks very much. you

bet. have a great weekend. in the video streaming arena, a new sports bundle is bust today. disney, warner bros. discovery and fox sports announced they're disbanding venue sports before it even launched. initial plans for venue sports were revealed last february, with hopes of creating a single streaming destination for sports fans. the three companies now say, well, they're instead going to focus on their existing products. all right. rob mayeda is back here with a look at what is we're very fortunate with, i think, our weather. weather right now here locally, aren't we, compared to what's happening in southern california? absolutely. we haven't seen the magnitude of winds they've had there. but here we've had dry weather issues. you see the hazy skies. we will have our winds pick up. not to the degree that they're seeing in southern california. i think that's going to help if our air quality. but the sound of the wind might wake you up tonight. if you're in the north bay and east bay hills, as we show you the microclimate forecast, the wind advisory starting at midnight tonight, it's going to last through about 10 a.m. on sunday, with the peak wind arriving early tomorrow morning. the interior hills and

mountains of the north bay diablo range, east bay hills and the santa cruz mountains. as we take a look at the peak wind speeds. notice as we wake up tomorrow morning, wind gusts of 30 to maybe 50mph above 2000ft. then, as we move forward into sunday, you notice how the wind speeds come down. so saturday, the more windy of the two weekend days, and more clear skies and some chilly mornings ahead. we're going to have morning temperatures tomorrow, with the wind likely in the 40s in the valleys, but as we head into sunday morning and monday morning, expect to see lows as cold as the mid 30s and those wind sheltered valleys highs tomorrow as we deal with the winds across the hills. mid 60s around san jose. low 60s from san francisco to oakland. sunny and dry as we wrap up the weekend and unfortunately more sunny and dry weather both here and in southern california. breezy and dry at times. no signs of this resilient ridge of high pressure is going anywhere. next 5 to 7 days remain quite dry from north to south, so look at your 7-day forecast as we move forward through the

for joining me i'm janelle wang. ferocious wildfires continue to rip across parts of la, leaving death and destruction in their paths. the fires have now burned a total of 30,000 acres this week, mostly by the palisades and eaton fires. that's larger than the city of san francisco, and nearly 200,000 people have fled their homes in search of safety. we've learned today at least 11 people have now died, although the exact death toll is not clear. we want to show you new video just shows the massive scale of the largest fires of one of the largest. the palisades fire stopping it has been difficult. after four days, containment only sits at 8% in that fire. more than 20,000 acres and 5000 structures have burned. to the east of there, the eaton fire, burning around pasadena and altadena, also shows little signs of slowing. cal fire says it has made some good progress today, but a lot more work is
