extreme. four times the normal demand for 15 hours straight which lowered water pressure. >> reporter: we are learning the community reservoir was offline and empty during the height of the fire storm going through repairs. had the reservoir been operable, it would extend efforts on tuesday night, but only for a time. >> when our firefighters come up to any type of a structure fire or wind event or land fire, our expectation, so you know, there's going to be water. >> reporter: the governor of california calling for an investigation into the water supply issues. across both fires, 11 deaths reported. 100,000 people laceddisplaced. the california national guard in the evacuation zone to keep people out. ps especially looters.

southern california, it's the opposite problem across the south. major storm bringing heavy snow and ice to a region not used to it. nbc's kathy park is in nashville this morning. kathy, how is the snow looking there? >> reporter: laura, good morning to you. as you can see, we got plenty of snow and many will be digging out this weekend. we got close to 6 inches of snow and at one point, the snowfall rate was close to 1 inch per hour. arkansas saw some of the biggest snow totals, in fact, recording more than a foot in some locations. meanwhile, ahead of the massive storm, tennessee, carolinas, georgia declaring a state of emergency to activate more resources to tackle snow, sleet and freezing rain. this win try weather made a mes on the roadways, drivers slipping and sliding with the icy conditions. at one point in kansas, a truck's windshield shattered when icy debris flew off a

passing car. many flights were canceled or delayed and operations disrupted at the world's busiest airport in atlanta where thousands of passengers had to evacuate on the emergency slide after the problem on the delta flight. the faa is now investigating. as far as the winter storm, it is now pushing east. the good news is it won't be as disruptive, but millions are still under winter weather alerts. laura, it's not over yet. >> kathy park, thank you. angie is tracking the wintry weather and the winds in southern california in the days ahead. let's start with the winds out west. >> we have a lot of folks under the critical risk. we saw a lull here as we went into the weekend. of course, we see those ramp back up. the main five fires we are watching. 10, 15, 20 miles per hour. look what happens by the time we get to the second half of the day. the elevated locations, the

mountains and hills. 40 or 50-mile-an-hour winds. this is going to be where we see the winds increase. we have another area of high pressure in the basin area. you will see the warm and dry strong winds off the desert. we are not adding any moisture with onshore winds with the winds off the water which helps with humidity levels.. its the opposite. the winds ramping up across the region to 40 or 70 miles per hour. the red-flag warning go back up. meanwhile, the winter storm is winding down as kathy said. >> angie, thank you very much. also this morning, president-elect trump's legal troubles in new york coming to an end with the judge sentences him in the hush money case. mr. trump vowing to appeal.

aaron gilchrist is at the white house for us with the very latest. aaron, good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning. when president-elect trump starts the term in nine days, he will be the first convicted felon to hold the office after judge merchan holds him to no jail time or fine or probation. trump appeared virtually from his home in florida. the judge cited the legal and immunity protections that mr. trump will soon have as the reason for the sentence. trump did speak during the hearing saying the case has been very terrible and despite indicted and convicted of falsifying documents for hush money payments, trump said he is innocent. >> it's been a political witch hunt to lose the election and obviously, that didn't work. the people of our country got to see this first hand. they voted and i won. >> reporter: relatively short

hearing there. judge merchan after issuing the sentence did wish the president-elect god speed in his second term. francisco laura. >> aaron, there is one legal issue in the dismissed federal cases. the fine al report from jack smith. >> reporter: jack smith's final report on the classified documents in florida and efforts to overturn the 2020 election. the judge will release the report. that could happen tomorrow barring any legal ma neuvers here. there have been attempts to delay the release entirely. the ag said he will not release the classified documents case report because the case against trump's codefendants is still active. >> the final report is expected to be lengthy. thank you, aaron. appreciate it. this morning, the fate of tiktok hangs in the balance

few months. >> it impacts a lot of people and some of these people is a business deal. >> savannah, thank you. all right. the white house announced friday that president biden will deliver a farewell address from the oval office next wednesday. mr. biden got a ju touting the economic numbers following a stronger than expected december jobs report. the economy made the transformational progress in the last four years adding 16 million jobs. the most in any presidential term in history. government scientists say 2024is the hottest year on record. that is two years in a row it shattered records. scientists say it is part of the warming trend they warned about for a long time due to greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. el niño contributed. a warming planet is prone to california wildfires and catastrophic hurricanes.

speaking of temperatures, let's get back to angie for the rest of the forecast. >> we have a couple of good spots across the country. sunshine in the middle of the country. if you live in the plains, tps are chilly, but sunshine. that goes for the southeast. the areas where we see snow is the interior and new england with a little of that structure across the rockies and dry through the southwest today. looking ahead to tomorrow, a light snowfall across the great lakes. the clipper system works cross the region. otherwise, not too i mpactful fr travel. in the northern plains, single digits. the winds will start to ramp up for folks across the southweout. we see a couple of snowshowers across the rockies. that's the

kira klapper. an investigation is now underway into why fire hydrants ran out of water during the historic palisades fire in southern california. governor gavin newsom is now ordering an independent investigation. nbc news also has confirmed that a 117 million gallon reservoir in pacific palisades is out of service, and the governor wants to know why. these questions, coming after a fire victim confronted the governor about water issues. is there no water in the hydrants? governor, that's all. literally. is it going to be different next time? it has to be. governor newsom has invited president elect trump to survey the damage in the los angeles area. in a letter, the governor said in part, quote, hundreds of thousands of americans displaced from their homes deserve to see all of us working in their best interests to ensure a fast recovery. so far, president elect trump has not responded to the invitation. the devastation

difficult to wrap your mind around. so many have lost everything. to help, try to meet some of those needs, a donation center is operating outside of the rose bowl in pasadena, staffed by volunteers working around the clock looking to help where they can. the site is stocked with food, water, clothing and other basic necessities. we're going to turn back here locally and check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at our microclimate forecast. i did want to take a quick second, though, here to continue updating people on what's going on in los angeles. those gusty winds will continue. they have subsided a little bit as we went overnight into this morning, but we do have all of these alerts ready to go in place and the winds picking up as we go on into the afternoon, continuing to be offshore and the situation getting a little bit even worse as we go on into the overnight hours of our weekend. so it's not only a weekend problem, it's also going to last those santa ana winds as we carry it on into next week as well. so we'll keep an eye on that locally. we're dealing with our own wind

shots are fired. officers run and try to take cover. that was moments after the attacker rammed his truck into pedestrians on bourbon street killing 14 people that night. the attacker was killed in the shootout as well. there are developments in the investigation of the plane crash that killed 179 people in south korea last month. authorities say the black boxes stopped recording the final four minutes before the plane made that belly landing and overshot the runway and hit the concrete structure there. the investigators are looking to see why the cockpit recorder stopped recording. the aircraft had suffered a bird strike. sad news this morning from the music world. the legendary soul singer sam moore died friday after complications from surgery. moore was one half of the r& b duo sam & dave. ♪ i'm a soul man ♪

for joining us on this saturday, january 11th. i'm kira klapper. the california nationalal guards now in southern california. governor gavin newsom deployed about 400 troops to the l.a. area fires in altadena. the troops are supporting law enforcement, keeping burn areas secure as they try to crack down on looting. a curfew is in place from 6 p.m. last night until 6 a.m. today. and those evacuation zones. the mayor of la karen bass says people who violate the order will beeld accountable.

hurricane-force winds plus supply issue with water. some of the hydrants becoming usess as the water supply tanks were running low. the l.a. fire chief commenting that a drop in budget or recent budget cuts i mpacted the firefighting ability. the governor is calling for an investigation into the water supply issues. you have the california national guard in the evacuation zone to keep people out. meanwhile, angelenos are coming together and people seeing the images say the neighborhoods look unrecognizable. >> the whole neighborhood is flattened. it's gone. it's just rubble and ash. >> we just wish we would be able to get more information about, you know, our home and be able to go and retrieve items. >> reporter: insurance companies are already estimating the total

across the region of southern california. multiple fires still burning. notice the fires and where the winds currently stand. we had a bit of a lull as we went into last night and early this morning. we keep the tampered down, but they ramp back up into the second half of the day. we will go 30 or 40 or 50 miles an hour in the hills and mountains. now, we've got another kind of santa ana wind event setting up. we have high pressure that will arrive later today in the pacific northwest. that slides into the great basin area and we have the same setup early into last week that left us with the really dry wiensds coming offshore over the desert areas and leaving us with reduced humidity levels. 5 to 15% in spots. of course, the winds gusting 40 to 70 miles per hour. this is something we will see into tuesday. you see the set up where the brighter pink is.

good morning. thank you for joining us on this saturday, january 11th. i'm kira klapper. an investigation is now underway into why fire hydrants ran out of water during the historic pacific palisades fire in southern california. governor gavin newsom now ordering that independent investigation. nbc news has also confirmed that a 117 million gallon reservoir in pacific palisades is out of service, and the governor wants to know why. these questions, coming after a fire victim

confronted the governor about those water issues. is there no water in the hydrants? governor, that's all. literally. is it going to be different next time? it has to be. governor newsom has invited president elect trump to survey the damage in los angeles. in a letter, the governor wrote in part, quote, hundreds of thousands of americans displaced from their homes deserve to see all of us working in their best interest to ensure a fast recovery. so far, president elect trump has not responded to the invitation. meanwhile, the devastation remains difficult to wrap our minds around. so many have lost everything. to help meet that need, a donation center is operating outside the rose bowl in pasadena. its staff, largely by volunteers working around the clock looking to help where they can. the site is stocked with food, water, clothing and other things that have been donated, and we have a link at the top of our website on where you can donate. all right. we're going

to turn now to the forecast with cinthia pimentel. good morning. good morning everyone. well the winds are dying down a little bit right now in southern california, but they are expected to pick up as we go on and take this futurecast into the afternoon hours and definitely getting even gustier as we go on into the overnight hours making that situation and the firefight of course, much more difficult, and evacuation zones and everything that you need to be prepared. of, of course, making it more difficult in the dark. i continue to see this going on into late sunday, even on into next week. so the situation far from over. we continue to think of our friends down in la. back here in the bay area, we do have a wind advisory of our own. we're seeing those gusts up in the mountains around 50 miles an hour plus. that will continue on until sunday morning, bringing some cold nights and some dry days ahead. so still no rain. we'll talk about maybe the possibility of it coming up in my full forecast at seven kira. back to you. all right, cynthia, we'll see you at seven. thanks. also coming up at
