there's no way to assess really
5:01 am
this, the magnitude of this situation right now at five. utter devastation. the destruction and damage still far from over as three major wildfires burn out of control in los angeles at this hour. the next three days will be critical as the fire dangers and strong winds are set to intensify. we have team coverage from the front lines, with thousands still under evacuation. our meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking what those crews will be up against all of this. as many step in to lend a helping hand to those who have lost everything. we're also breaking news out of san francisco. this is where an overnight police pursuit ends in a crash. our kris sanchez is following all the new details, including more on the building damaged in that crash. this is today in the bay. good monday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we'll have more
5:02 am
local headlines for you in just a moment. but first we want to begin in southern california this morning. thousands of homes are still threatened by those flames of three large wildfires. the biggest palisades village and eaton fires so far. at least 24 lives we know have been lost. and that number is expected to rise. and at least 16 people have been reported missing. so far, more than 12,000 structures are estimated to have been damaged or destroyed. crews are working to gain ground as they brace for more dangerous conditions in the coming days. this is a look at where things stand. the palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres, and it is still just 13% contained. now, containment jumped to 27% on the eden fire. it has burned more than 14,000 acres in altadena. also, an investigation is underway into whether southern california edison equipment played a role in starting the first fire. it's now 95% contained and has charred nearly 800 acres. the
5:03 am
fire sparked last tuesday in sylmar, west of altadena. southern california's power company revealed friday a downed conductor was discovered in the vicinity of the fire, but it does not know whether the damage occurred before or after flames broke out. now our team is working to bring you up to the minute updates for us. meteorologist kari hall is tracking those intense gusts expected to pick up today. but first, want to take things over to jay gray. he's live for us in pacific palisades this morning. and, jay, tell us about the current conditions there. how is the wind? yeah. marcus. laura, calm right now, thankfully, and has been over the last day or day and a half or so. so that's good news. but as you also say, it's getting ready to change. it does nothing to change the devastation here. it is overwhelming. unimaginable in places and stretches for miles. take a look here at this building. it looks like the aftermath of a bombing attack. i mean, everything just crumpled and destroyed here and other areas. there's just nothing
5:04 am
left. no clue of what stood before the flames. and as we're talking about a growing concern about the potential for yet another firestorm across this area. over the last 24 hours, a dip in the winds and some progress along the front lines of the la wildfires. this is hand crews, engine companies out there scouring the edge, continng to put those control lines in to make sure that we have no fire progression or limited as much as possible. but the figh here is anything but over. santa ana winds forecast to pick up again through at least wednesday. some areas could see gusts of 50 miles an hour or more, potentially fanning flames, igniting and scattering embers. we're focused on two things containing the fires and saving lives and protecting property. but so much here has already been lost. entire communities gone. see it this way. okay, i never thought
5:05 am
i would live through something like this. at least 12,000 structures and 40,000 acres swallowed by the flames. this is an absolute nightmare. this is an apocalyptic movie. there's no way to assess, really, this, the magnitude of this situation. law enforcement ending escorts for residents hoping to recover anything they can in the rubble. locking down ravaged neighborhoods. a lot of these areas still look like they were hit by a bomb. there are live electrical wires, gas lines and other hazards. we want to make sure you're safe. firefighters continuing to battle along the front lines of the blaze, some for days without sleep. we're going to keep fighting this fight. we're going to get this fire out, and we're going to rebuild each of those missions right now, overwhelming. yeah. and you really can't think about
5:06 am
rebuilding, really getting to the restoration process until the flames are controlled. not at that point. and laura marcus, as we've talked about, more wind on the way, it is a long road ahead for so many people. it's got to be heartbreaking to see it all. thank you jay. as jay was just mentioning, those windy conditions expected to pick back up again today. meteorologist kari hall is tracking conditions for those on the front line. yeah, we are seeing some lighter winds in some spots. and as we take a look at some of the current winds and we also look at the relative humidity, which is still critically low, only at 27%. as we take a look at the gusts in the santa monica mountains at about 22mph. so lighter winds to start out, but we will have another red flag warning going up as we go into the next several days. another prolonged wind event, but the peak of the winds will be coming in going into this evening, early tomorrow morning into the afternoon. our hour by hour
5:07 am
forecast shows that at 5:00 tomorrow morning in santa clarita, we could see a 57 mile per hour wind gusts, 67, in moorpark, and it will stay very gusty throughout the day tomorrow with those dry northerly winds. and the santa ana winds will continue through wednesday. so we'll be tracking that. we'll talk about breezy winds in the bay area as well coming up in a few minutes. all right kerry thank you. well, as the firefight continues, many children in los angeles are heading back to school today. la unified school district announcing most schools and offices are reopening, saying conditions have improved for a majority of those areas across the region and it is safe for students and employees to return to campuses. however, some of those schools will stay closed, especially those in the pacific palisades area, as many of those schools there have burned down. coverage of the southern california wildfires continue this morning on today. it includes powerful and emotional acts of kindness as a community comes together to help one another amid the devastating damage. that's all ahead. at
5:08 am
7:00 this morning, right after today in the bay. well, closer to home, we're following breaking news. two san francisco police officers are in the hospital after a pursuit of a suspect early this morning in the bay's kris sanchez joining us this morning from the newsroom. so, kris, tell us more about this. well good morning to you, marcus and laura. at this point it is not clear why those san francisco police officers were pursuing that suspect, only that the pursuit did not end the way that it was supposed to. this was the scene around four this morning. and you can see that sfpd patrol car along with that white car, they crashed. the white car is the suspect vehicle. they also hit a residence. and there were people inside at the time. fortunately, no one inside was hurt. this was at the corner of san bruno avenue and paul avenue. what we know right now is that at least two officers and the suspect suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital. all three appear to be okay. police have not told us why they were pursuing that suspect at this
5:09 am
point. but i looked up the department. policy and pursuits are only allowed if officers have reasonable suspicion or probable cause that a felony or misdemeanor has occurred, is occurring, or is about to occur. now we have a crew headed to the scene. we'll bring you more details in the next hour. marcus. all right. chris. thank you. well, also overnight, a sideshow causing a big police presence in oakland. take a look at this. now, that was the scene last night around 11:00 at macarthur boulevard and 106th street. you can see the cars were doing donuts in the middle of that intersection as a big crowd watched on. now, police say that they were able to break up that sideshow and disperse the crowd. also in oakland, overnight robbers targeted two 7-eleven stores. this was just a couple of hours ago. police say that a group broke the front door of the 7-eleven on thornhill drive, and then held
5:10 am
that clerk at gunpoint. they were able to steal cigarettes and a cash register before running off. shortly after another robbery at a 7-eleven on pearson street. the suspects taking off with the same items. so far, no arrests have been made. 509 on your monday morning. taking a peek outside this morning overlooking san jose. nice and clear out there. kari got a look at our forecast for today. yeah, we're starting out with some cold temperatures, frost advisory in effect for the inland areas and the east bay and south bay, but also a wind advisory in effect until 10:00 tomorrow morning, mainly for the north bay where we are going to see these north and easterly winds picking up. it's mostly going to be throughout this afternoon and then into early tomorrow morning. we start to see the wind calming down as our temperatures today head for the upper 50s and low 60s. still very mild out there. we'll talk about changes on the way for the week coming up in a few minutes. mike's been looking around to find us some lower gas prices. hayward is amit to start the week in. oh my goodness. we
5:11 am
can't hear you and we really need to hear. i really want to talk about. oh, really? here we go. i really want to talk about. i got so excited. my electricity went through my body and turned off my mic. apparently howard is hayward is the star of the week here, folks. happy to tell you it's 353. tied for the best across the bay at diamond gas and maher on winton avenue. now tied with hayward. is san jose one spot? xcel gas and maher on north first street, just just off of 880. that's where they get that deal. and we'll check out the north bay with 359 in vallejo. national petroleum on springs road for that price. getting a look on the roadways. good news. it is a smooth flow of traffic around the bay. lighter traffic right now. we had a crash at the bay bridge just off the berkeley curve. the connector to south 880 has reopened. so has the bridge over there in rio vista. after their 55 hour closure. looks like they fixed that bridge, scott. and it's back in service for this morning. over to you. all right, mike. well, tiktokers making a last minute appeal to the u.s.
5:12 am
supreme court. let's go out to the futures this morning. remember, we got that really strong jobs number on friday and that displeased wall street. we'll talk more about that plus. three hour. griner receive our highest. a sound amid the darkness ahead for you video going viral of wildfire survivors belting out an anthem amid utter devastation and the signs of hope found among the rubble. keep it right here. you're watching today in the bay.

5:15 am
as we take a look at our current temperatures, we're feeling some of the coldest air in the south bay in the sta cruz mountains, as well as the south county. we've dropped down into the 30s. meanwhile, it's 50 in santa rosa where we are getting some more gusty winds. we'll talk about the range and temperatures, as well as what's ahead in our microclimate forecast coming up. and we were concerned about what was ahead of folks traveling down the east shore freeway. that transition from west 80 to the southbound 880 had been closed for a short period of time. that semi truck and the damage to the attenuators has been cleared. so everything's just fine at the berkeley curve and farther back at carlson. looks like all lanes are cleared from an earlier crash as well. well good morning. very happy
5:16 am
monday to you. nvidia says the white house will announce new restrictions on chips today. we figured that was coming late last week, but it never did. jpmorgan's health care leadership conference gets underway in san francisco with, as you can imagine, very tight security markets had another losing week last week. a lot of that can be blamed on the really, really strong jobs report that we got on thursday. investors figure so long as the economy continues to do well and the economy is doing really well, the fed is not going to cut rates further. it's got the economy right where it wants it. absolutely. this fed deserves a gold star in the universe of fed's historically, because the soft landing has been a unicorn a mythological impossible thing that's never happened. but in fact this fed is delivering on it. and now they're in the driver's seat where we might see them sit back and do nothing for
5:17 am
a couple of meetings just to let the economy take the front stage and play out before they take any further actions with regards to, to interest rate changes. now the one troublesome spot continues to be short term bond yields. wall street is calling this a bond tantrum, but really it's an entirely natural reaction. we'll talk more about bonds as the week progresses, but there are problems with that. decision about tiktok could come any time from the u.s. supreme court. this woman who markets her cookies on tiktok is one of the litigants in the case. she and others made a last ditch public appeal to the court over the weekend. i rely almost entirely on tiktok to market my products. to say tiktok changed my life is an understatement. tiktok is the place where people told me i could do so much more with my life than i ever believed. now, less than a week to go until the ban on tiktok, or at least it has to sell itself or face a ban. but we should get a supreme
5:18 am
court decision before then. i'll be curious to see it. oh my goodness yes. thanks, scott. you bebet. well, turning back now to our coverage of the los angeles wildfires as crews work around the clock to try to contain the flames, there are some signs of hope left among the smoldering rubble. sobrevivir en esta casa. es nada mas y menos cu la estatua de un angel. there y see it? there there's a statue of an angel still standing in a home in altadena which burned in the eaton fire. a reporter from our sister station, telemundo 48, captured the moving moment, saying, it is very symbolic. another very moving moment being shared on instagram by bette midler. her family actually gathered where their home once stood for 37 years in altadena. raging. attorney. they torri ana. la ley torri. hallelujah.
5:19 am
in that clip there, the group of ople are seen singing together, with some wearing masks as they stand on what appears to be burned down rubble with smoke filled skies behind them, as you can see in another post, midler wrote, quote, i am devastated and heartbroken for all of us. wow. you know, it was kind of nice to see. it's like you're almost paying homage to the house that, you know, it really shows what a home is to everyone and how music heals to. yeah, absolutely. all right. well, we've been talking about what's happening there also with weather conditions, the wind expected to pick up again. yeah, unfortunately. and this also looks like another time when we see those winds gusting for hours on end. it's really not letting up for southern california. we're also going to have some breezy winds not expecting it to be as severe as we're starting out this morning in dublin. a live look as you're heading out the door and going
5:20 am
to work. it's now 41 degrees and it's a cold morning with some breezy winds. got quite gusty at times throughout the weekend, and we're still getting an easterly wind at about 14mph. we may see the temperature here in the tri-valley dropping another couple of degrees between now and sunrise, and then throughout the day, a gradual warm up as we go back into the 60s for this afternoon. so here's what we do currently have that wind advisory that will be in effect through tomorrow morning some of the strongest winds in the hills and elevations above 1000ft, where gusts may top 50mph. and those kind of winds, we could see the potential of downed trees and also impacts to power as we go through the forecast. once again, it's that strong northeasterly wind throughout today and for the bay area. still looking at some gusty winds at about 15 to 20mph away from that wind advisory and our temperatures a little bit warmer than normal into the upper 50s low 60s. martinez today headed for a high of 60
5:21 am
degrees 62 in san francisco, and it will be in the low 60s for the north bay. looking at tomorrow's forecast, it will be just a touch warmer for spots like the south bay into the mid 60s, 66 for gilroy and 62 in palo alto and in oakland. and then on wednesday. it's also very mild and warm for this time of year as high pressure continues to dominate our weather and keeping the rain chances away. so it looks like, at least through the next week or so, we're still not seeing any significant rain chances in the forecast. lots of sunshine and above normal temperatures, and our mornings though will be very chilly, dipping into the low 30s at some point. we could possibly see some freezing temperatures for some of our inland valleys, and san francisco is going to see sunshine throughout the week, and highs in the low 60s. mike, you have a look now at the eastshore freeway. i do want to talk about a crash that happened early morning. it's west 80 at
5:22 am
chris carlson. there still may be some activity out of lanes. all lanes are reported clear. this was, i believe a deadly crash again happened overnight. but the lanes, the impact to your traffic flow is now just a distraction and minimal investigation going on there. but that is what remains. everything else shows a nice smooth drive. highway 37 just shows that little bit of slowing. it just caught that there. highway four not a problem just yet. we'll watch for the build in our usual suspects. the bay bridge is moving smoothly. we should see some slowing on the incline. starting about 20 minutes as well. the rest of the bay moves very nicely. altamont pass, we do have a little more traffic. so, as kari showed you, dublin moves smoothly with a good volume there. starting back at grant line road, the drive is still just 24 minutes to the interchange. back to you. thanks, mike. 521 coming up next on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. how can you get an insurance company to pay you every single penny you're owed after a disaster? a really boring home video. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. i'll relieve the boredom and show

los angeles fire storm is a reminder to everyone you need a home inventory just to get the full payment from your insurance policy. consumer investigator chris chmura shows us what it is and how to easily create one. a home inventory is a list of everything you own and insure. if you ever have to file an
5:26 am
insurance claim, you have to prove what you had before you get paid. having a home inventory can help. this is your not so secret weapon, a smartphone. use it to record a video. nothing fancy. just walk through every room and go slowly. make sure the clip records e everythin in each roo. talk about what you see. show the brand names and model numbers. speak about where you bought your stuff, when and how much you paid. your narration now might help jog your memory later on. go all over. open every drawer, every cupboard, every closet. and just make sure that you're not just sticking with the house. but so many people have stuff in their garage too. when you're done, upload your video and any photos or documentation to the cloud in case your phone is destroyed or goes missing during a disaster. a full inventory can save you time, money, and heartache. and yet, an insurance industry survey found 80% of people in the past year didn't have an inventory or didn't update it.
5:27 am
maybe that's because it's a bit of work, but it doesn't have to be. there's a number of tools that are now available, many available through your insurance company, probably for free. ask your agent about those tools and apps. after all, that's why you pay them a commission. thank you chris. 526 now next year, the top stories we're following today, including big changes, begin for bart. riders are mike inouye is breaking down the new transit schedule you need to know before you hop on. i'm ginger conejero saab in san francisco. state leaders are hoping to help survivors of la county fires rebuild. up ahead, we'll talk about the recent move by governor gavin newsom to cut down on red tape.

530. firefighters battling three fast moving wildfires in southern california are bracing for a new week of high winds, the dangers facing millions as more of the destruction already left behind comes to light. also, in moments of terror and loss, acts of kindness from firefighters coming across the world to aid to those donating and volunteering to help those who have lost everything. our team is covering it all. this is today in the bay. 530 on your monday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm
5:31 am
laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. at this hour, all eyes are on the forecast as crews race to contain those three major wildfires in los angeles county. evacuation orders are in effect for 105,000 residents, and 87,000 are in evacuation warning zones. now, this means they may need to leave at a moment's notice. the palisades and eden fires are still by far the largest, with more than 12,000 structures estimated to have been damaged or destroyed. many more are still threatened. now, we do know now that 24 people have died, 16 have been reported missing. here's a look at where things stand. the palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres. it is still just 13% contained. an investigation is underway into whether southern california edison equipment played a role in starting the first fire. it is now 95% contained and has charred nearly 800 acres. southern california's power company revealed friday a downed conductor was discovered in the
5:32 am
vicinity of the fire, but it does not know whether the damage occurred before or after the flames broke out. in the meantime, containment has jumped to 27% on the eaton fire. it's burned more than 14,000 acres. all new video from a couple from altadena captured the eaton fire on their doorbell camera as it sprang to life last tuesday night, before it quickly grew out of control. i'm going to spray the spray the roof. search and recovery teams are working to get into some of those hardest hit areas, including pacific palisades. brittany hope, from our sister station in la is covering this. she has more with a look at the aftermath. good morning. this monday morning from the pacific palisades, a very different scene here that we've seen compared to the past few days. you can barely smell smoke. we don't see flames igniting the coastline behind us and all around us. what we do see, though, is those winds and those are being highlighted here on
5:33 am
the corner of pch and sunset, an iconic intersection where the gladstones restaurant is. these winds have not stopped since we got here this morning, and certainly it is a concern as the winds will stay with us through wednesday. because of that, thousands of people are still evacuated from their homes. we know thousands have burned and a huge concern here is people who are essentially wanting to take advantage, who are looting homes that have burned and are still standing. so just behind me here, you're going to see a checkpoint. this is one of many that we've seen throughout the burn area and throughout the evacuation zones of the palisades fire. the california national guard standing there with their tanks. one of them, one of the members, has a gun strapped to his chest. they are not playing around after multiple people have already been arrested for breaking the curfew here, and also for looting businesses. and just overnight, the governor said he's bringing in another 1200 members of the cal guard to protect these neighborhoods, to
5:34 am
help battle the fires and to keep everyone safe. of course, the conditions as the sun comes up may change, but we do know that winds are expected to kick up over the next few days. back to you. that's going to be tough. thank you. well, meteorologist kari hall has been tracking conditions for those first responders as well on the front lines. and when exactly are the conditions expected to intensify? we know the winds, you know, can make or break the situation for them. and we could see in her live shot. it's not very windy right now. and in a lot of spots. we have a calm wind all across southern california, but in some of the hills and some of the upper elevations, we are seeing some breezes and gusts up to about 28mph in the santa monica mountains. and we are under that particularly dangerous situation. red flag warning that's the highest level of a red flag warning that we've seen. once again, this is the third one we've had since last month. and still still looking at those gusty winds that will increase over the next few hours, even as we approach the
5:35 am
sunrise hours into the early afternoon, we're looking at winds that will continue to pick up to 60 to possibly 70mph, and the peak of those winds are expected to come in early tomorrow morning and then continue through noon on wednesday. with that red flag warning and those gusty winds for this prolonged period of time. so that's going to make it very dangerous for these crews to try to get some more containment. marcus. all right. kari. thank you. well, as crews work to gain the upper hand on those fires, state leaders, they are starting to outline the future possibilities for rebuilding by removing red tape. now, today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live for us in san francisco this morning. and ginger, the governor there taking action. that's right. good morning to you, marcus. there has certainly been scrutiny around preparedness for these l.a. county fires or questions about approved budget cuts for lafd. governor newsom has also issued an investigation
5:36 am
into those dry fire hydrants that seem to hamper firefighting. but the governor does want to move the needle when it comes to rebuilding from the destruction left behind by these fires. over the weekend, newsom issued an executive order lifting california coastal act and california environmental quality act requirements for those rebuilding from these fires. now, for so many survivors, rebuilding won't happen immediately or even quickly. but the governor tells nbc's jacob soboroff he doesn't want logistical red tape to be another obstacle. now, rebuilding after a devastating fire is something that people here in the bay area are also familiar with. jennifer gray thompson is the founder of nonprofit after the fire, which she began in the wake of the 2017 wine country fire. she says it took about five years for much of sonoma county to rebuild. it could take more time for coastal properties, but she believes that newsom's move is a
5:37 am
game changer. well, don't want people to give up hope that they can actually do it. it's going to be a slog and a long time, but they can do it. california leads the nation in environmental stewardship. i'm not going to give that up. but one thing i won't give into is delay. and the governor is also directing state agencies to look into other possible permitting issues. he definitely wants this not to be an issue when it comes to rebuilding for those survivors. and he says he is looking to keep these people in california, in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. thank you ginger. our team is continuing to follow the fires in los angeles closely. when we're not on the air. our website is a great resource. we're posting updates around the clock. just head to nbcbayarea.com. you can also download our nbc bay area app for free. well, this morning we continue to follow breaking news in san francisco. two police
5:38 am
officers in are in the hospital. this is after a pursuit of a suspect early this morning. now sfpd patrol car and a white car. that suspect was driving both crashed. they also hit a residence at the corner of san bruno avenue and paul avenue. at least two officers and that suspect suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital. police have not told us why they were in pursuit of that suspect. 537 big changes are coming if you take bart. our mike inouye, of course, tracking what you need to know before you head out the door this morning. mike. a lot changing. yeah. let me qualify this, though. all transit riders should check their schedules this week, as timing for multiple agencies has been adjusted again, they do this periodically. 20 bay area transit agencies work together to better synchronize their systems in an effort to help improve the rider experience around the bay. we talked about this a few months ago, but bigger change for peninsula bart riders who have to make a new transfer weeknights after 9 p.m.
5:39 am
due to the big change. we're talking about the big changes. bart is starting a new multiyear project to bring even more improvements to their schedules. starting tonight, they're beginning the system wide upgrade for their 50 year old control system to a more efficient communications based train control system. what it means is we're going to be able to run trains closer together, more trains that will actually be able to increase capacity through the transbay tube and all modern components. so less breakdowns because we're finally modernizing the system. sounds good. now, after this first phase of on the peninsula, which does demand some schedule changes for folks in the transfer, the rest of the work is expected to happen after hours and should be transparent to bart riders. improvements will be incremental, progressing over the next few years, starting first with that peninsula leg and then moving out. eventually. a smoother, shorter ride to work is expected for most. we hope it will. kari
5:40 am
how's our ride? looking for work today? yeah, you want to put on a jacket for the start of the day? if you're heading to the bart station, it's going to be in some spots in the 30s and 40s, but we are also seeing a wide range in temperatures due to some breezy winds kicking up in se spots. so in san francisco, it's 51 to start out our monday morning, it's 49 in hayward and 42 in danville. but if you're in the south county, it is in the mid 30s and you may even have some frost on the windshield as we go throughout the day. all of this sunshine will help moderate our temperatures and will be in the low 60s into the afternoon. we'll talk about the wind and some things we're watching in our microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. lots more still to come on today in the bay. incoming vice president j.d. vance says donald trump will protect all americans, even those who didn't vote for him. helping our friends devastated by those wildfires in los angeles. the donation drives this weekend here in the east

i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah. i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire risk from our equipment by over 90%. that's something i want to believe.
