tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  January 13, 2025 6:00am-7:00am PST

6:00 am
now at 6:00, a high speed chase in san francisco ends with a patrol car crashing into a
6:01 am
building. we know there are multiple injuries. the new update from investigators at the scene this morning. the destruction and damage still far from over as wildfires burn out of control in los angeles. strong winds are intensifying over the next three days, and we have a team up there from the front lines as the fire danger is on the rise. this is today in the bay. good morning to you. on this monday, i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we'll get to that breaking news for you in just a moment. but we are monitoring the situation in southern california. thousands of homes are still threatened by flames. of those three large fires, the biggest, the palisades and eaton fires. so far, at least 24 lives have been lost. and sadly, that number is expected to rise. now here is a look at where things stand this morning. the palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres and is still just 13% contained. meanwhile, containment has jumped to 27% on the eaton fire
6:02 am
that has burned more than 14,000 acres in altadena. after strong winds slowed down over the weekend. they're already back today in the bay's. jay gray is live in pacific palisades this morning. and jay, tell us about the current conditions right now. yeah laura marcus calm winds right now. thankfully we change as far as the conditions with this entire area. i mean, take a look behind me. you can see this building. it looks like the remnants of a bombing attack here. it's just devastated. and this along with other areas where there's just nothing left, no real clue of what stood before the flames. this this kind of devastation stretches across miles here in the los angeles area. and there is that growing concern that with the wind picking up later, there is the potential for another firestorm here. over the last 24
6:03 am
hours, a dip in the winds and some progress alo the front lines of the l.a. wildfires. this is hand crews, engine companies out there scouring the edge, continuing to put those control lines in to make sure that we have no fire progression or limited as much as possible. but the fight here is anything but over. santa ana winds forecast to pick up again through at least wednesday. some areas could see gusts of 50 miles an hour or more, potentially fanning flames, igniting and scattering embers. we're focused on two things containing the fires and saving lives and protecting property. but so much here has already been lost. entire communities gone to see it this way. it's okay. i never thought i would live through something like this. at least 12,000 structures and 40,000 acres swallowed by
6:04 am
the flames. this is an absolute nightmare. this is an apocalyptic movie. there's no way to assess, really, this, the magnitude of this situation. law enforcement ending escorts for residents hoping to recover anything they can in the rubble. locking down ravaged neighborhoods. a lot of these areas still look like they were hit by a bomb. there are live electrical wires, gas lines and other hazards. we want to make sure you're safe. firefighters continuing to battle along the front lines of the blaze, some for days without sleep. we're going to keep fighting this fight. we're going to get this fire out, and we're going to rebuild each of those missions right now, overwhelming. yeah. and look, recovery is something they can't really deal with until they have control of these flames. that's not the case at this point. what we're seeing on the ground is a thousand additional national guard troops
6:05 am
deployed to this region. we know and see constantly law enforcement and fire teams patrolling these areas looking for hotspots. but also marcus laura kari preparing for that next round of extreme winds, which should whip up sometime later this afternoon. that's going to be a problem. thank you very much for showing us the latest there. meteorologist kari hall, of course, here with us right now, we've been talking about how those winds are going to pick up again on the front lines. that's going to be a tough battle for them. yeah. when you see the wind picking up and it could possibly spread those fires and other areas that haven't been burned yet. as we take a look at the current conditions, at least in the valleys, the wind is fairly calm. but then when you go up in elevation, we're already seeing wind at about 24mph in t santa monica mountains and gusts to 31. and the forecast for today is for it to become dangerous once again. in fact, a particularly dangerous situation. red flag warning.
6:06 am
that's the level, the highest level of a red flag warning you can get, as we still are going to see critically low humidity and the winds increasing. let's go hour by hour, because here we are at 1:00 this afternoon. we're seeing the wind at about 40, 45mph from santa clarita down to malibu and then into later this evening once the santa ana winds really increase and we get those sundowner winds into early tomorrow morning, we could possibly see 60 to 70 mile per hour winds coming through some of those mountain gaps and drying that air out even more as it blows offshore, increasing that fire danger and possibly the threat of new fire starts as we go into the next few days. with this prolonged wind event continuing through the middle of the week, we'll be watching it back to you. thanks, gary. well, closer to home, we're following breaking news. two san francisco police officers are in the hospital this morning after the pursuit of a suspect. that happened early this morning. today in the bay's kris sanchez in our newsroom this morning
6:07 am
with more on this. so, chris, do we know what happened here? you know, it's not clear at this point why those san francisco police officers were pursuing that suspect, only that that pursuit did not end the way that it was supposed to. this was the scene around four this morning. you can see the san francisco police patrol car where it crashed into that building. you see that white car? that was the suspect vehicle. they also crashed into each other and hit that residence with people inside. at the time, this was at the corner of san bruno avenue and paul avenue. what we know right now is that at least two officers and the suspect suffered minor injuries. they were taken to the hospital by ambulance. they are going to be okay. police have not told us why they were pursuing that suspect. but i did look up the department policy for you. and pursuits are only allowed if officers have reasonable suspicion or probable cause, that a felony or violent misdemeanor has occurred, is occurring, or is about to occur. and those guidelines are updated. just back in november, we have a crew headed to the
6:08 am
scene, and we will bring you more details in the next half hour. all right chris, thank you. also new overnight, a sideshow causing a big police presence in oakland. take a look at this. now, this was the scene last night around 11:00 at macarthur boulevard and 106th street. you can see there that cacar doing donuts in the middle of the intersection. big crowd there. watched on. pice say that they were able to break up the sideshow and disperse that crowd. this week, rv's parked in certain areas in san jose will be cleared out. the city has chosen 30 temporary tow away zones to clear rv's for street sweeping and other cleaning this year. the over $3 million pilot program goes into effect this week. chenoweth avenue is the first site that will temporarily ban rvs. the city counted 19 lived in vehicles on that street. san jose says it always
6:09 am
posts signs for at least a week before towing restrictions will, before they actually tow the restrictions themselves, will stay in place for about a month. those looking for a new spot to park san jose plans to open a safe parking site in berryessa next month. 608 this morning, as we take a live look out in san francisco. nice and clear there this morning. meteorologist kari hall of course, tracking what we can expect weather wise. a cold start to the morning. kari. it is very cold, and in some spots. we're starting out with a frost advisory for these areas shaded in blue. this will be in effect through 9:00 this morning. and some of the valleys kind of in between those hills and mountains, we are seeing the temperatures really dipping quickly, and we are even below freezing in the santa cruz mountains, in boulder creek, and in the mid 30s from south san jose to san martin. and we're seeing temperatures in the low 40s for the tri-valley. but where we are seeing some winds picking up and those gusty winds continue from yesterday. we're in the low 50s. as you're heading out the door in san
6:10 am
rafael, the wind is calm. temperatures in the low 40s, and throughout the day it's going to be nice and mild with a lot of sunshine, but at times that wind will be quite gusty, so we'll be watching that. mike, you've been looking around to save us a little money here and there, trying to get a good start for the weekend. hayward is our lead to start. 353 is tied for the best across the bay at dimond gas mart on winton avenue in hayward. tied with san jose, though, where they have excel gas and mart on north first street. that's the second price right here. and that's just off 880 again off north first. we'll check out the north bay as well to finish off 359 in vallejo. it's national petroleum on springs road for that price check your prices. gasbuddy.comm shld show you any changes that happened over the weekend. let's take the roadways. we haven't had a lot of unexpected change. south bay, little build, the tri-valley. we did have a lot of slowing. south 680 coming down in towards sunol out of pleasanton. nothing registered on the grid and nothing as far as roadwork going on, but it's
6:11 am
starting to move better. whatever the case. the bay bridge toll plaza has the biggest build now at the out of oakland. there you see it slowing off the berkeley curve. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. 610 right now, all hands are on deck when it comes to containing the situation in southern california. we've seen crews from all over the state and western u.s. next. the helping hands that just arrived from our neighbors south of the border. tiktokers are now counting down the days until the ban on that app. let's go out to the futures this morning. remember, we got very strong jobs data on friday. and wall street has not been happy with that. and no doubt here the 49ers not going to the super bowl this year. we know that. but you know what one of the team's players might be in the puppy bowl. we're going to explain when we return. you're watching today in the bay.

6:15 am
the economy is doing very well, the fed's not going to cut rates anymore. it's got the economy right where it wants it. absolutely. this fed deserves a gold star in the universe of fed's historically because the soft landing has been a unicorn, a mythological impossible thing that's never happened. but in fact this fed is delivering on it. and now they're in the driver's seat where we might see them sit back and do nothing for a couple of meetings just to let the economy take the front stage and play out before they take any further actions with regards to, to interest rate changes. now, one troublesome spot continues to be short term bond yields. wall street calling it a bond tantrum. but really it's an entirely natural reaction. we'll talk more about bonds as the week progresses. that decision about tiktok could come any time from the u.s. supreme court. this woman markets her cookies

6:17 am
those in the pacific palisades area, as many schools there burned down. firefighters from mexico will hit the front lines today, helping fight the palisades fire. firefighters arrived saturday at lax and dozens received training yesterday over at riverside to prepare. the group includes members of the federal fire team and the mexican army. 73 firefighters will work alongside local fire crews to set up those fire lines. cal fire says they are thankful for the added manpower and our wildfire coverage continues in just minutes, with some crucial information from our consumer team on what you should be doing right now to make sure that you are covered in case of a wildfire emergency. 616 right now and trending for you this morning. we're about a month out from valentine's day. but you know what? in san francisco, some are already feeling the love. these are the new heart sculptures at the ferry building there, designed by more than 20 artists who donated their time
6:18 am
to support san francisco general hospital foundation. they may look familiar. the same hearts are scattered throughout san francisco. they'll be auctioned off to donate money for the hospital. you can check them out now through february 3rd. we're also trending. we're less than a month away from the super bowl, and while the 49ers won't be going to the big game, a puppy named after one of their players is headed to the puppy bowl. we want to introduce you to deebo samuel. he's a poodle mix and he's representing the sacramento spca. the shelter says that the puppy is ready for the national spotlight. like his namesake, deebo samuel is known to be a versatile player on the field. he may start off a bit reserved, but when the ball rolls his way, watch out. this dog is always ready to make some big plays. so deebo is competing for most popular in the popularity playoffs. you can help him win by voting every day at puppy bowl.com. by the way, this is
6:19 am
the second year that the 49ers have had a puppy bowl player bark purdy, who was a runner up last year. oh my gosh, they're all adorable, aren't they? they really are. yeah, that would have been a good one. that's a good one too. so it's team ruff and team fluff, right? i think so, yeah. so we'll be watching. we need to vote. definitely. get out there and vote. deebo. all right, let's get started. this morning, as we've been watching the gusty winds throughout the weekend and the cool temperatures continue. take a look at this live view in san francisco as you're getting up and heading out on this monday morning full moon and this time of year in the winter, when we do get a full moon, sometimes it creates those king tides. and that's exactly what we'll see into the next several days. high tide for san francisco will be shortly after 10 a.m. that's when we get those higher than normal tides due to the gravitational pull of the moon during the winter months, and it can cause some low-lying flooding for those bayshore
6:20 am
trails and park and rides. and some of those areas that do typically flood in the king tide. so watch out for that. in the north bay, we'll see those high winds picking up, and the wind advisory will be in effect through 10:00 tomorrow morning for elevations above 1000ft. and in the hills around the north bay, we could see those gusts possibly reaching 50mph. in the valleys, it's more like 25 to 35mph. it will be gusty into today as well as early tomorrow, but then eventually starting to see the wind calming down across the bay area. it's the coastal areas as well as some of the hills that could see some of those higher wind gusts throughout today, but it looks like the peak of those winds will be coming in over the next few hours. and then our temperatures today still above what's normal for early january. only in the upper 50s and low 60s. and usually we're in the mid to upper 50s. so this is warmer and it will get even warmer as we go through the next couple of days, with some mid
6:21 am
60s for the south bay and a high of 60 in novato and san francisco. half moon bay tomorrow up to 62 degrees. and looking at also this warm weather continuing, we are stuck in this pattern we have for the month of january, most likely not seeing a change where we have high pressure blocking any chances of rain coming in as the jet stream is driven very far to the north, up and around the bay area. and then we've seen that cold air plunging off towards the south and east. so there's just this big difference from one side of the country to the other. and we're going to see temperatures here once again, nice and mild, at least for the afternoons. our mornings are going to be cold. so we're starting out layering up and then possibly even wearing short sleeves for the afternoons. with this big change in temperatures going from 30 to 60 in san francisco, it's going to be windy today, so that will make it feel cooler, even though our highs are headed for the low

five. storm a reminder for everyone. you need to have home inventory to get full payment from your insurance policy. consumer investigator chris chmura shows us what that is and how to easily create one. a home inventory is a list of everything you own and insure. if you ever have to file an
6:26 am
insurance claim, you have to prove what you had before you get paid. having a home inventory can help. this is your not so secret weapon, a smartphone. use it to record a video. nothing fancy. just walk through every room and go slowly. make sure the clip records everything in each room. talk about what you see. show the brand names and model numbers. speak about where you bought your stuff, when and how much you paid. your narration now might help jog your memory later on. go all over. open every drawer, every cupboard, every closet. and just make sure that you're not just sticking with the house. but so many people have stuff in their garage, too. when youou're don upload your video and any photos or documentation to the cloud in case your phone is destroyed or goes missing during a disaster. a full inventory can save you time, money, and heartache. and yet, an insurance industry survey found 80% of people in the past year didn't have an inventory or didn't update it.
6:27 am
maybe that's because it's a bit of work, but it doesn't have to be. there's a number of tools that are now available, many available through your insurance company, probably for free. ask your agent about those tools and apps. after all, that's why you pay them a commission. thanks, chris. 626 right now we've got a lot more ahead at 630, including an update from the front lines of those california wildfires as winds are starting to pick up again. plus, i'm ginger conejero saab. we're live on the scene of a crash here in san francisco this morning. i want to show you the aftermath of a pursuit between a san francisco police patrol car and a suspect that they were chasing. will have the details up ahead. stay with us. you're watching today in the bay.

6:30 am
we are monitoring breaking news in san francisco, where a police patrol car crashed during a high speed chase. our crew just arrived at the scene and we'll check in with them shortly. good monday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. at this hour, all eyes on the forecast as firefighters are battling three fast moving wildfires in southern california and bracing for a new week of high winds. now, evacuation ords are in
6:31 am
effect for 105,000 residents, and 87,000 are in evacuation warning zones. now, this means that they may need to leave at a moment's notice. palisades and eden fires are still by far the largest. more than 12,000 structures are estimated to have been damaged or destroyed. many more are still threatened. 24 people have died in those fires. 16 have been reported missing. here's a look at where things stand. we just got an update within the last half hour. progress is slowly being made. the palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres. it is 14% contained. an investigation is underway into whether southern california edison equipment played a role in starting the fire. it is now 95% contained. it is charred nearly 800 acres. southern california's power company revealed friday. a downed conductor was discovered in the vicinity of the fire, but they don't know whether the damage occurred before or after the flames broke out. meantime,
6:32 am
containment has jumped to 33% on the eaton fire. it has burned more than 14,000 acres. search and recovery teams are working to get into some of the hardest hit areas, including pacific palisades. brittany hope, from our sister station in la, has more on this coverage this morning with a look at that aftermath. good morning. this monday morning from the pacific palisades, a ver different scene here that we've seen compared to the past few days. you can barely smell smoke. we don't see flames igniting the coastline behind us and all around us. what we do see, though, is those winds and those are being highlighted here on the corner of pch and sunset, an iconic intersection where the gladstones restaurant is. these winds have not stopped since we got here this morning, and certainly it is a concern as the winds will stay with us through wednesday. because of that, thousands of people are still evacuated from their homes. we know thousands have burned and a huge concern here is people who are essentially wanting to take
6:33 am
advantage, who are looting homes that have burned and are still standing. so just behind me here, you're going to see a checkpoint. this isne of many that we've seen throughout the burn area and throughout the evacuation zones of the palisades fire. the california national guard standing there with their tanks. one of them, one of the members, has a gun strapped to his chest. they are not playing around after multiple people have already been arrested for breaking the curfew here, and also for looting businesses. and just overnight, the governor said he's bringing in another 1200 members of the cal guard to protect these neighborhoods, to help battle the fires and to keep everyone safe. of course, the conditions as the sun comes up may change, but we do know that winds are expected to kick up over the next few days. back to you. thank you. all right, let's check in with meteorologist kari hall and kari. how do things look at this hour? we are seeing in some spots the wind is calm in some of the hills and mountains. we are still getting some some of those wind gusts. so take a look
6:34 am
at the changes that we are starting with this morning. a 26 mile per hour wind in the santa monica mountains with gusts to 31. and we know that it is expected to increase as we go through the next few hours. we are still under a particularly dangerous situation. red flag warning that's basically a step up from a regular red flag warning, where the conditions are so critical that we may see some more fire starting today, or the ones that continue to burn spread in a different direction, and we are going to see those winds picking up going through late morning into the afternoon. but it looks like the peak of those winds will be hitting us by tomorrow morning. look at this. 7:00 in the morning, santa clarita, 57 mile per hour winds. and it may be even stronger for those elevations above 3000ft where we could see those gusts, possibly to 60 to 70mph. and this continues through noon on wednesday. so unfortunately, this will be a prolonged wind event. and we are not out of the
6:35 am
woods just yet with this very critical fire danger. back to you. all right. kari. thank you. now our team continues to follow the fires in la closely. when we're not on air. our website is going to be a great resource for you. we're posting updates around the clock. just go to nbcbayarea.com. you can also download our free nbc bay area app. well, breaking news two san francisco police officers are in the hospital after the pursuit of a suspect early this morning. today in the bay's ginger conejero joins us from the scene this morning at the corner of san bruno and paul avenue. and there's still, i understand, some debris. yeah, you can see it t there left behind from this crash. yeah. that's right. laura, there's quite a bit of debris exactly where we are on the corner of san bruno and paul neighborhood in san francisco. and to give you a look at what is still here on the street, you see a lot of broken glass, see some car parts, a license plate there of a car. we don't know who that license plate belongs to, but you can see the damage
6:36 am
to this building. the gate to this building. what used to be a liquor store. this building is actually up for sale now. from what i understand now, the damage i continue want to show you or i want to continue to show you. continues out to the bend. as paul avenue extends out, you can see a damaged street lamp and a speed limit pole there. i can kind of imagine maybe what took place here that that created this damage. i want to show you some video from earlier that morning that will paint that picture for you. this is some video from the scene around 4:00 in the morning. you can see there's a san francisco pd patrol car where it crashed with a white car that the suspect was driving. now it hit a building as well. the building here that we are in front of people were not inside at the time. from what i understand, this is at the corner here of san bruno and paul in the portola neighborhood. but we do know
6:37 am
that there are twofficers and the suspect who suffered minor injuries. all three were transported to the hospital. police have not told us why they were pursuing the suspect, but according to department, policy, pursuits are only allowed if officers have reasonable suspicion or probable cause that a felony or a violent misdemeanor has occurred, is occurring, or is about to occur. there is a bit of change there from the recently passed proposition e or not so recently, but it was passed last year that has made the change that a violent misdemeanor can also attribute a pursuit. so we have yet to find out the exact reason for that, laura. but this is definitely kind of the aftermath. that's what you're looking at. i also want to i also want to point out that one of the police officers that was on the scene here earlier this morning stopped by, checked on the owners. the owners are now here. they do not want to be seen on camera. they do not want
6:38 am
to comment on this, but a nice kind of silver lining there. as the police officer checked in to make sure that everyone was all right. no injuries here on the san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. all right. thanks for the very latest, ginger. we are moving the bay area for this morning with some big changes coming for bart riders starting this morning. i'm mike inouye is tracking what you need to know before you head out the door this morning. mike good morning folks. you know you're not just bart, but all transit riders should check their schedules this week as timing for multiple agencies has been adjusted. again, as we told you last year, a 20 bay area transit agencies work together to better synchronize their schedules in an effort to help improve rider experiences around the bay. so subtle changes there for many. but a bigger change is for peninsula bart riders, who are now going to have to make a transfer on weeknights after 9 p.m. due to a bigger change. overall, bart is starting a new multi-year project to bring even more improvements to their
6:39 am
schedules. starting tonight, they're beginning with a system wide upgrade to their 50 year old control system. it's going to be a more efficient communications based train control system. what it means is we're going to be able to run trains closer together, more trains that will actually be able to increase capacity through the transnsbay tube and all modern components. so less breakdowns because we're finally modernizing the system. so that should keep things more efficient and moving better. so after this first phase on the peninsula, they'll see the benefit. the rest of the work is expected to happen after hours and should be transparent to bart riders and their schedules. improvements will be incremental, as they say, progressing over the next few years, but eventually getting the system with a smoother, shorter ride to work. that would also mean a short wait. so kari, what do folks waiting outside today have to deal with? as they're checking the schedule this morning, they may have a few more minutes to dig for a thicker coat, because it will be a cold start. this morning we are under a frost advisory for
6:40 am
the south bay and inland east bay. some of the valleys this morning starting out with some 30s, although the wind has been up enough to keep the frost from developing in the east bay, we are now down to 35 degrees in san martin, and we are seeing where the wind is. still gusting temperatures there are starting out in the low 50s and heading to the 60s for this afternoon. it will be 62 in novato and same in san francisco. this is the same weather we've had throughout the past week or so, with sunshine, breezy winds, and warmer than normal temperatures. and we'll talk about some slight changes coming up in our microclimate forecast in just a few minutes. all right. thanks, gary. well, could it be joe biden's final visit as first lady? just ahead on today in the bay, we break down what's on her agenda thi week in san francisco as she winds down her time in the spotlight. and we'll hear from melania trump as well. plus, donald trump says he will help out california wildfires.

the east bay. she was actually on her way down to southern california to visit a friend. when those fires broke out, and sadly, her friend ended up losing her home. so this past weekend here in pleasanton, ginger organized a donation drive to help out her friend and others impacted by those fires in los angeles. ginger and other volunteers. they filled a truck with clothes, water, even pet food that's going to be driven down south later today. it's a matter of solidarity and knowing that we're in it together, everybody can feel it. we've had wildfires out here. we know how terrifying it is. so it's really a matter of putting our priorities in order, working together to solve these problems and then moving together to a better future. further north in danville, megan stern, she has a cousin who lost her home in the fire. so megan put out the word to her friends for help and the response was overwhelming. people donated all sorts of things, like toiletries for

megan's cousin and other people hurt by those wildfires. they plan to stop at the pasadena civic center, where many evacuees are located. here's megan's cousin. her name is aaron dahl. we lost our whole community and we didn't know what to do. so when my family reached out and said that they wanted to help, of course, you know, you say yes. what you don't expect is for their community to then rally behind and then their community's community to rally behind. and it just shows how good people are. i mean, people are so good. for now, aaron and her family are staying with friends in los angeles. reporting live here in pleasanton. bob redell today in the bay. it's nice to see the good emerge from this as well. absolutely. thank you bob. well, let's talk about what firefighters are up against there though. they've had a little break in the winds. yeah. and we are going to see it picking up again today. most

likely peaking tomorrow. so that's the unfortunate thing is that we are not done with the dry and windy weather. it's been pretty breezy here as well across the bay area as we take a live look outside in san francisco, you can see the moon there, right there to the left of the transamerica pyramid. now that full moon will create some higher than normal tides, as we sometimes see during our winter months, as we get that greater gravitational pull of a full moon that makes the water come farther inland, and that will create some flooding for some of those low lying areas for the bay shore as well as near the coastline. so watching out for some late morning flooding until noon, and then also as we go throughout the day, it becomes quite gusty. so we're starting out calm right now. live. look outside in san jose where we are all clear. there will be lots of sunshine today and a really nice one going from upper 40s at 9:00 to seeing our 1:00 temperatures at 62 degrees, making it into the mid 60s, and then quickly
6:51 am
seeing those temperatures dipping again around sunset. but we talked about those high winds that will mainly be in the north bay and some of the hills above 1000ft. we could see some of those gusts topping 50mph. but because we've had quite a bit of rainfall, we're not as concerned about a high fire danger. but there still may be some downed trees and some power impacts as these winds gusts up to 30 to 40 in some of the valleys and even into the late morning into the early afternoon, we're looking at some pretty high wind gusts that will gradually start to calm down as we go throughout the day. i think by nine, 10:00, that's when we could see the peak of those wind gusts, even near the coast, with half moon bay seeing a 40 mile per hour wind at 9:00, and then at 4:00. it's looking much better. we are just stuck in this pattern with this very stubborn high pressure that's just to the west of us. it's creating the dry conditions and steering the jet stream well to the north of us. that's what's kari what carries those storm systems. and it's making
6:52 am
it a way, carrying it away from the bay area. so we're just looking at more sunshine in the forecast. our high temperatures are headed for the mid 60s, but it's going to be cold in the mornings. look at those lows down to the mid 30s over the next few days. and san francisco will see about the same highs in the 60s and morning starting out there in the mid 40s. mike, you're seeing the commute now rippling through the berkeley curve. yeah. and i thought it was because just to the volume that builds here, coming over here toward the bay bridge and also down toward 885 80. but we do have an issue closer to the bay bridge there. reports of a car fire approaching the hov lanes and the right side. things are addressed pretty clearly because i don't see anything on the camera. and then out of the city, eastbound to the lower deck may have a disabled vehicle in your right lanes, so watch for that as you leave san francisco. in san francisco, we have also fix it week. so note that the sfo, muni the subway here will have early stoppage.
6:53 am
you'll have to take busses after 930 for this week. they're doing some maintenance on. of course those underground subway systems got to do that the rest of the bay. a pretty typical pattern with the south bay really kicking in now. back to you. okay. thanks so much, mike. fix it week in san francisco. also happening now. downtown san francisco will be jam packed this week with the best of the best in health care. visiting for a conference today kicks off the j.p. morgan healthcare conference in san francisco. health care leaders will gather at the saint francis hotel. topics will include the latest trends and investment opportunities in the industry. this is the 43rd year of the convention in the city, which is expected to bring a big boom for local business. the conference runs through thursday and we are back in just minutes with a look at our top stories this morning, including breaking news, a higih eed chase in san francisco ending with a patrol car crashing into a building. we have new update from investigators, plus, winds are intensifying in the wildfire burn out of control in la. an

6:58 am
afternoon. evacuation orders are in effect for 105,000 residents. sadly, 24 people have died in those fires. palisades f fire hs burned nearly 24,000 acres and is now 14% contained. meantime, containment has jumped to 33% in the eaton fire. it has burned more than 14,000 acres. and certainly, as we've been saying, that those winds are going to pick up there. yeah, we've got a new round of a red flag warning and a very dangerous situation, as we are expecting the winds to increase throughout today. and all of those areas around those fires could possibly see winds gusting to 30, 40, 50mph as we go into this afternoon. but the peak of the wind will be early tomorrow morning. look at that. possibly 67 mile per hour winds and even higher in some of the hills. so unfortunately, we're not seeing this letting up just yet. he in the bay area, it remains dry and we're going to see temperatures above normal with highs in the mid to upper
6:59 am
60s through the end of the week, but our mornings very cold, dipping down close to freezing each and every day. little chilly. we're in that car. all right. let's look out on the roadways where the south bay warming up its commute. we now see slowing on 8587. saw a lot of folks slowing coming up toward curtner. nothing going on as far as the incidents report, and it's starting to smooth out. we'll track that. this is just continuing to build the east shore freeway, the berkeley curve westbound 80 slows onto 85, 80 and of course, toward the bay bridge, where the toll plaza is full. we see the slower drive coming down the east shore freeway across from richmond, as well as in the north bay. there was some slowing that developed over in walnut creek, but you notice right now southbound 680 toward 24. that interchange maintains a smooth drive. so the volumes there just teetering at the speed limit. but we should see some build and some slowing over the next half hour. all right. sounds good. well, the today show is just ahead with craig melvin officially taking over the helm for the first time alongside savannah guthrie. that's ahead at moments at 7:00.
