fires, and a new week bringing relief in the forecast for southern california. >> firefighters did make some progress, thanks to calmer winds over the weekend. but those winds are expected to kick up again over the next few days. >> yeah. the national weather service has now issued what's calleded a pd warning. it stands for particularly dangerous situation amid fears that winds could quickly spread these current fires and even spark new ones. >> and this morning the death toll is rising. at least 24 people have been killed so far, along with entire neighborhoods, as well. more than 12,000 structures and counting. all of it adding up to one of the worst natural disasters in u.s. history. >> we've got it all covered. we also have an interview with the l.a. captain this morning. we also have the ways you can help the victims. but we're going to begin with nbc's tom llamas. he has the latest from los angeles. hi, tom. good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah. good morning to you. when we came up to this building, we didn't know what it was. then we saw the sign, los angeles public library.

this was the palisades branch. you can see what the wildfires did to it. if you look closely, you can see the stacks where the books were. the books have been completely incinerated. when residents tried to absorb these images, for the first time, we are seeing the firefighters with some progress. crews in the air and on the ground trying to stop this threat. this morning those whipping santa ana winds, making a return. in the coming days, wind gusts expected to reach up to 70 miles per hour, as the eaton and palisades fires broaden their footprint. officials say the death toll has now reached 24 and is still expected to climb. we traveled to the top of this canyon to see how crews are making critical progress as they battle the blaze. this massive burn scar is helping block the flames from reaching nearby communities. but the threat is not over. we're down by one of the hot spots on the canyon. you can see, it bubbled up

really quickly. but luckily, there is an air drop just above us. they'll try to attack it from above. choppers with long line buckets carrying hundreds of gallons of water. and on this drop, bull's-eye. that's why these air dro are so critical, attacking these fires from above. with machinery and aircraft like that, that's how they can make progress and get ahead of the fires. crews acting fast to put out active flames. >> the other concern is, not only this fire, but new starts. where is it going to go? how do we respond? >> reporter: as the fall-out continues, the l.a. fire department chief publicly saying they needed more support before the fires broke out. >> did we have enough resources? i will tell you, no. >> reporter: mayor karen bass has said any budget cuts didn't affect the response. >> the fire chief and i are focused on fighting these fires. any differences we might have will be worked out in private. >> reporter: comes as governor gavin newsom calls for an investigation into water supply issues on the fire's front lines. the governor speaking out on

"meet the press." what are the questions you are hoping to answer? >> same ones you are asking, same ones people on the streets are yelling about. what the hell happened? what happened to the water system? was it just overwhelmed or were 99-mile-per-hour winds determinative and there was no firefight that could have been more meaningful? >> reporter: now, six days after the palisades fire first began, the massive inferno is still gaining new ground. the national guard tapped to slow the spread. aerial efforts hampered by unauthorized drones, including one that punched this hole in a canadian super scooper. the fbi is now investigating. the atf investigating the cause of the wildfires, as residents in the palisades are scrambling for new places to live. one family said the rental market here as exploded. you have 50 people all applying for the same property. savannah. >> all right. thank you, tom. let's bring in al who is

tracking the severe winds. good morning, al. >> good morning, guys. as you heard, things have calmed down a bit. but we still have the santa ana winds gusting 50 to 70 miles an hour. the relative humidity s come up a bit, but that's going to be changing. here's the deal. you heard about that particularly dangerous situation. it spreads from pyramid lake north and out to ventura. high risk the fires with explosive growth. why? because it's been so dry, because there is low humidity. and with fires already burning, whatever vegetation is left is super dry now and it will really kick off. currently we have 13% containment of the palisades fire. 98% of the hurst fire contained. the eaton fire only 27% right now. winds are relatively calm, anywhere from 10 to 20 miles an hour. but as the afternoon kicks in, you will see the wind gusts up

to 50, 60, 70 miles an hour. and that's what the big problem is, fires that are already burning and new fires that have been inflamed by the current fires themselves. >> okay. thanks, al. >> we'll check back in a minute. joining us now with the toll and the danger, sheila kelliher, los angeles county fire department captain. captain, good morning to you. first of all, how concerned are you about this wind forecast and what that could mean for your efforts? >> listen, i think al just said it perfectly. it is really challenging because everything is so dry. our humidity is super low. and when those winds start gusting up to 45 miles an hour again, it really has a chance to push that wind. we really feel like we have our situation at the palisades fire. we know what's expected and really protected, but anything can happen. and a lot of those unburned areas are really a concern. >> captain, it's been nearly a week now. what would you say to folks who just basically want to know when are we going to get this thing under control? when are we going to be able to contain these fires that are

burning? >> i think now that we have this system in place, we have so much help from all over the state, all over the western united states, and even international help has come. we have a ton of resources in place. over 5,000 personnel on this fire. we have crew camp crews. we have a ton of resources there. everybody is in place, the plan is set. it will just take a bit. and like the next couple of days with the wind, we just have to get over that hump. once that the case, you can see, we did a ton of work when the winds were low. we're getting there. mother nature just has to cooperate. >> well, our prayers are with you, captain kelliher. the fire and the first responders have been just incredible during this. >> thank you, thank you. >> we will tell folks how they can help out. and right now let's turn to that breaking news in the middle east, progress towards a hostage deal. the most significant in months is now being reported. what does it mean for captives held for more than a year

including americans? nbc chief correspondent richard engel joins us once again from the region this morning. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. well, we have been down this road before. but i'm told by a senior arab negotiator, someone i have known for a long time, he's directly involved in these talks, that the sides are closer now than they have been in many months. that this came after the qatari prime minister, and these talks are taking place in qatar, has been working on this 24/7 in the last two weeks. and particularly when he was joined by president-elect trump's envoy joined this process, they've been making significant progress. this deal could see up to 100 hostages released. and end of major combat operations in gaza, that has so

far killed more than 45,000 palestinians according to local officials. craig? >> our chief foreign correspondent, richard engel, thank you. in the meantime, it is the start of a busy week in washington. confirmation hearings for president-elect trump's cabinet. including some of the most controversial picks are set to begin. and preparations for the inauguration. one week from today. they are ramping up. nbc's capital correspondent ryan nobles, joins us with the latest. ryan, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. these hearings could make or break some of donald trump's more controversial picks. and the president has told his colleagues that he wants his team in place as quickly as possible once he's inaugurated. but in some cases, that may prove to be difficult. the clock is ticking down to trump 2.0. and this time around, donald trump has promised to create a cabinet that reflects his political movement. >> now we have a tremendous amount of experience. we have people that i can rely on. >> reporter: but several of his picks have raised questions, from the senate republicans that will need to vote to confirm

them. this week, many of these nominees will have to demonstrate they're up to the job. >> yes, some of them are outside the box. but i do think we have the votes. >> reporter: over the course of four days, senators are expected to hear from more than ten trump cabinet picks. on tuesday, pete hegseth will be on the hot seat and is expected to get questions of accusations of sexual assault, alcohol abuse and financial mismanagement, allegations he denies. while republicans have rallied around trump's pick, many democrats still have questions. >> i think it is in our best interest to have everything put out on the table. >> reporter: the confirmation hearings are heating up as trump put his legal trouble behind him. he was sentenced friday in the new york hush money case without any penalty. the federal investigations into classified documents on january 6th were dropped after he won the election. it is unclear if the reports by jack smith will be released to the public. but smith informed the court last week that he has resigned

washington this morning, the nfl playoffs. those washington commanders moving on for the first time since 2005 after upsetting tampa bay last night, just one of the wild card weekend games that fans were glued to. nbc's kaylee hartung here in the studio with the highlights. kaylee, good morning. >> i'm guessing it was hard to get to bed early in your house last night. as we all know, playoff football hits different. the biggest names in the nfl reminded us of that this weekend. the ravens, texans and bills and eaes, all claiming victory at home. but the commanders clinched a playoff win for the first time in nearly 20 years. that's the early talk of the push to the super bowl. >> and it is in! >> reporter: the nfl wild card weekend, delivering commanding performances and punishihing hi. as sunday night's matchup in tampa bay finished in wild fashion. >> the washingngton commders off the upright! >> reporter: the commanders winning off a last-second field goal off the upright.

good morning. it is 726. i'm laura garcia. breaking news. we're following two san francisco police officers are in the hospital after the pursuit of a suspect. today in the bay ginger conejero saab joins us live at the scene at the corner of san bruno avenue and paul. and there's still some debris left behind from the crash. that's right. and it's now getting cleaned up. laura, you can take a look behind us. some of that broken glass, some car parts. you can also see a damage control box, a street lamp and that speed limit pole all knocked over and damaged during the pursuit that ended in a crash here in san francisco's portola neighborhood. it's not clear at this point why those san francisco police officers were pursuing a suspect. but what we know is that two officers and the suspect were transported to the hospital. from what we understand, they are they have minor injuries. now, this was the scene around four this morning where you can see that patrol car where it

crashed with a white car that the suspect was driving. now, according to san francisco police policies, pursuits are only allowed if officers have reasonable suspicion or probable cause that a felony or violent misdemeanor has occurred, is occurring, or is about to occur. we have yet to find out the exact reasons, but as of now, the cleanup is underway. we'll bring you the latest on this as it as we do get it. but for now, we're livive in san francisco. ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. all right. thank you very much, ginger. let's check the forecast right now with meteorologist kari hall. it is a cold start, but it's all clear across the bay area as you're getting up and heading out. temperatures in the 40s. as we go throughout the day. it will be in the upper 50s and low 60s, and l

good morning. as heartbreaking as it's been to see, the devastation behind me, the eaton fire to the palisades fire, we are seeing some glimmers of hope, as you mentioned. volunteers across the fire zone, say it's all hands on deck, to get displaced families back on their feet. this morning, as the wildfire disaster deepens, the city of angels, living up to its name. acts of kindness and generosity, pouring into fire-stricken areas. >> we hahave so ma volunteers. thank you, guys, for coming out. >> reporter: donation centers like this one, at the santa anitaflooded with volunteers. this man showing up to lend a hand even after losing their own home. >> we feel isolated like no one cares. but at the end of the day when tragedy happens, all over the town, they come and support.

♪ ally alleluia ♪ >> reporter: this family singing hymnmns over t ashes of the home they lived in for 35 years. nearby, the altadena community church was a fixture in the community for more than 80 years, before it, too, was destroyed by fire. not far from the remains of the church, migrant workers, some 500 people strong, clearing debris from roads and parks, collecting supplies and distributing them to victims. >> people need love and company. in these times of difficulty, hope is built by this act of kindness and love. >> reporter: ruth will celebrate her 90th birthday next month and never expected to see her altadena home of 48 years go up in flames. >> everybody on our street communicated and just made sure that, are you out? are you out? are you safe? >> reporter: she's seen the damage in photos, but told us life experience has given her some valuable perspective.

>> i don't really need a lot of clothes. my life is simple. >> reporter: have you found that mentality has kind of helped? >> yes. i don't worry. i am at the age where you can look back and actually know what's important, people. >> reporter: some much-needed perspective and wisdom from ruth. and believe it or not, this is what is left of ruth's home of 48 years. but she takes solace by the fact she is surrounded by family and friends. and neighbors helping neighbors is what we've seen across this area. a lot of folks are inspired by seeing the international firefighting efforts, with crews from canada and mexico both teaming up. guys? >> morgan, thank you.organ, tha. >> you know this area. >> my hometown, yeah. it's been heartbreaking to watch. i grew up in santa monica. a couple blocks from the palisadeses, where i spent my

was elected by a super, super majority. he was the consensus choice. in fact, i would say it was never even a choice. we love hoda. we tried to wrap our arms around her and give us the best good-bye through tears. now, we have tears because it's tears of joy and gratitude because sitting right next to us all this time has been craig. and he is a seamless transition. he is absolutely made for this job and made for this moment. >> so in sports we use terms -- i have to lean on what i know best. when an assistant coach becomes a head coach, they move over one chair and say it is a very different move when you move that one chair. how big of a difference is it to move from the chair you have been in to the chair on the other side of her? >> hopefully it will not feel that much different. i mean, i will get up earlier. hoda gave me some advice. it stayed with me. if you start changing things, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. if who you had been and what you have done has gotten you to where you are.

now, this was just a couple of hours ago where police say a group broke the front door of the 7-eleven on thornhill drive and then held that clerk at gunpoint. they stole cigarettes and a cash register and then ran off. shortly after, another 7-eleven on pierson street. the suspect taking off with the same items. so far, no arrests have been made. i'm bob redell. people throughout the bay area are helping our friends who have been devastated by those wildfires down south inouthern california, for instance, here in pleasanton, a woman named ginger faith. she lives here in the east bay. she has a friend who lost her home in los angeles during those fires. so this weekend, she decided to organize a donation drive to help out her friend and others impacted by those fires in los angeles, she and other volunteers. they filled a truck with clothes, water, and even pet food that will be driving that down south today. let's get a look at our forecast on this monday morning with meteorologist kari hall. it's starting out clear, cool and breezy, especially in san

nbc's tom llamas in pacific palisades for us. tom, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning again. firefighters are trying to make sure what happened here in the palisades doesn't happen again. the winds are picking up today. the fire service calling this a particularly dangerous situation. the santa ana winds will be blowing 40 to 50 miles per hour. up to 70 miles per hour with wind gusts. that's forecast for tuesday. firefighters are trying to get ahead of this. we were with them all weekend, as they were making real progress. it's the first time we saw real progress in the firefight. they had choppers and planes that were dumping the fire retardant and hundreds of gallons of water on the flare-ups. this is a good sign. as the winds pick up, the situation will get much more difficult here, and much more dangerous. people are still on-edge. there's people that are sort of teetering on evacuation orders, waiting to hear if the fires kick up, if they have to get out. that's happen right now. and we're learning today, the first charges are being niled

it has been a devastating week for so in los angeles. the toll of those wildfires growing each and every day. the forecast is concerning for today, as well. >> this morning we want to shine a light on ways you can support those folks in need. here to help us do that, a guide on how to help those hard-hit communities. nbc's vicky nguyen. again, it can't be said enough. there are so many people that are suffering right now. the death toll stands at 24, expected to rise, as well. what are some of the organizations out there right now, vicky, that are trying to help folks get the relief they need? >> craig, this is so important, what we did at nbc news because

we heard from generous viewers who want to help the folks in southern california. we went through and vetted some of the most reputable organizations. i want to walk-t-through t different ways you can help. let's think about this. six days since the fire. more than 12,500 structures have burned, most of those are homes. think about school kids. many don't have schools to go to right now. add to that their teachers and school leaders. let's start with the american red cross. any donations you make there will go directly to food, shelter and mental health services for the fire survivors. there is an organization called direct relief. what they're doing is providing medal medical aid supplies like n95 masks directly to first responders as well as survivors. and world central kitchen, they are on the ground. they're providing hot meals for people. there is an organization called the center for disaster philanthropy. what they are doing is collecting funds for the future, for the rebuilding of these communities, which we know will take years. >> a lot of people want to send practical items.

could be clothes. could be toiletries. if you want to donate physical items like that that are in good shape, can you do that? >> absolutely. you don't have to be local to do that. you might have gotten a gift card from target or amazon. you can send to these organizations, as well, from afar. let's start with the l.a. regional food bank. what they're asking for, simple shelf stable foods, like fruit snacks, energy bars. when it comes to nonperishable items, think about the babies. they need diapers and toothpaste. next up is the ymca of los angeles. you can donate to any chapter. they're saying pasadena can really use some help. they're looking for baby formula, cereal, gloves and sleeping items. as i mentioned, you don't have to be there physically to bring in those items. these organizations are asking that y call first so they could give you the exact address to make sure these items get routed properly. >> okay. you can send something from

amazon, for example. >> absolutely. >> you want to call first and get the address. got it. >> when you talk about the first responders last hour, folks watching and listening to want to do something to help these firefighters, who have literally been working around the clock for a week now. what are some that can help them? >> they are doing heroic work, saving homes, property and in some cases getting memorabilia out of these homes for them. the l.a. fire department has a foundation providing direct relief right now to firefighters on the ground. things like emergency fire shelters, brushland fire tools, to fight these fires, as well as hydration backpacks. they are working hours and hours upon end. and then long-term thinking about the california fire foundation. they support the first responders, families and the firefighters because this is hard work. we don't know the long-term health effects. they need that support months and years from now. >> finally last but not least, the pets. a lot of people's pets might have needs right now.

>> the pasadena humane society really leading the charge to evacuate pets and give them a safe place to go. they have taken in 400 animals over the past few days. they say this morning, actually, they no longer need volunteers to foster, they had such an overwhelming response. but they need monetary donations because those animals need medical care. smoke inhalation, burns, they are working hard to unite people with their pets. the monetary donations would make a big difference. for all of the other organizations we talked about, if you can't donate now or you can't donate your money, time, you know. and not just in these days, but in the months and years to come, that's when they need the volunteer help, as well. >> because it is a long road. >> it is a long roadad. thank you. so helpful. >> you can fd more about these organizations and other ways that you can help the fire victims on our website today.com. mr. daley? >> thanks so much. when we come back, we will switch gears. we've got "pop start" in full,

good morning. it is 856. i'm marcus washington. happening now. breaking news out of san francisco. two police officers are recovering after a police chase ended in a crash. it happened around 4:00 this morning at san bruno and paul avenues. now, police say officers were chasing a suspect in a white car when they turned onto paul avue, crashing into a building. the suspect and two officers were taken to the hospital, but all are expected to be okay. you can see that damage done to the storefront. what once was a liquor store? that building is currently for sale. the owners did not want to be on camera this morning. they are understandably distressed about this situation and how it
