11:01 am
low fuel moistures will keep the fire threat in all of los angeles county. critical. right w at 11, our coverage of the deadly wildfires in southern california continues. the danger is still around for nearly 100,000 people under mandatory evacuation orders. the latest on the firefight as strong winds are expected soon. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. at this hour, all eyes are on the forecast as firefighters are battling three fast moving wildfires in southern california. the engine strike teams and task forces are being strategically pre-positioned for rapid response to any new fires that break out as the region is under red flag warnings through wednesday. right now, evacuation orders are in effect for 92,000 residents. palisades and eden fires are still by far the largest. more than 12,000
11:02 am
structures are estimated to have been damaged or destroyed, and many more are still threatened. sadly, 24 people have died in the fires, 23 have been reported missing. here's a look at where things stand. and we just got an update. progress is slowly being made. the palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres and is still just 14% contained. an investigation is underway into whether southern california edison equipment played a role in starting the hearse fire. it's now 95% contained. it is charred nearly 800 acres. southern california's power company revealed friday a downed conductor was discovered in the vicinity of the fire, but it does not know whether the damage occurred before or after those flames broke out. meantime, containment has jumped to 33% on the eden fire, which has burned more than 14,000 acres. the devastation is unimaginable. entire neighborhoods are gone. and as soon as more people will
11:03 am
be let back to see their homes. nbc's jay gray has more from pacific palisades. look, let's start with the containment numbers. and they are up in all three active fires over the last 24 hours. not significantly, but it does show that teams along the front lines are making some progress. there's concern right now that progress could be in jeopardy with what's now being characterized as an extreme and particularly dangerous red flag warning. that's a rare designation. we saw it initially with the fires that left devastation like this across miles in this area, areas that look like a bomb's been dropped, others where there's just nothing left, no clue of what was standing before the flames. the winds again expected to intensify dramatically over the next several days, with gusts that could reach 70 miles an
11:04 am
hour or more. not the 90 to 100 we saw initially, but still strong enough to really re-energize the fire where it is burning out of control at this point, enough to spark embers and spread those embers into new areas. 1000 additional national guard troops have been deployed. you've got law enforcement as well as firefighters patrolling these areas, constantly looking for hotspots and preparing for the next wind event, which is expected to really start to whip up sometime later this afternoon in pacific palisades. i'm jay gray. now back to you. all right. thank you, jay and those firefighters, they certainly need a break. yeah. we are unfortunately starting to see the wind picking up again. and even from this morning when we were looking at the wind speeds and the forecast for those santa ana winds that are expected to increase as we go throughout the day. as of right now in the santa monica mountains, we're seeing the wind at about 28mph and some of those gusts picking up to 37mph. so once again, the
11:05 am
winds are getting stronger. the relative humidity is critically low, and we are still seeing this particularly dangerous red flag warning the pds red flag warning, which is the highest level of a red flag warning you can get. we are seeing that once again, in effect for pretty much all of southern california, for those coastal areas where we will see the impact of these winds increasing in the humidity levels decreasing as we go throughout the day. take a look at the forecast. our hour by hour forecast shows just how strong those winds are going to be at 3 to 4:00 in the morning. this is a really dangerous time as many people are sleeping. if a fire does start to spread, maybe in a different direction, well, there will be a lot of people who may not heed those warnings because they're asleep at the time. and we're going to see these winds increasing through tomorrow afternoon. but the peak of the wind is expected within the next 24 hours. so we'll continue to monitor that with this prolonged wind event that will be extended through
11:06 am
the middle of the week. back to you. all right kerry, thank you. and wenow people throughout the bay area. they are helping those down in southern california who have been devastated by those fires and in many cases, lost everything they owned today in the bay's bob redell joining us live from livermore. this is where a small caravan of donations just left for southern california. and bob, no surprise there that so many people are just outpouring with support there for people who lost everything in the fires. you are correct. good morning to you, marcus. yes, there's been a lot of support, especially here in the tri-valley. a local realtor from livermore where we're at right now, she organized this donation drive for her friend who lost her home in altadena, and for other people who are displaced during the fires in southern california. that realtor here in livermore, ginger faith, thought she might be able to fill one u-haul truck with donations, but turns out she needed two box trucks. seen here this morning before they left downtown livermore for the pasadena area. loaded with furniture, clothes,
11:07 am
water, pet food, and other supplies, these are items that she and her friends collected during a last minute donation drive over the weekend in pleasanton. this is a drive that she advertised on social media. ginger was expecting just a few things, not this kind of overwhelming response for her friend. what's her response been? she truthfully overwhelmed. she was crying. and i think the most important thing is, she said a few days ago i was completely in shock and overwhelmed. and now i truly believe i truly know what is most important. i truly know that this has been such an outpouring of love and support, that there's absolutely nothing we won't be able to rebuild. she is absolutely confident that everything is going to be better than ever. and this was the scene a few hours ago here in livermore. there you can see ginger and her friend driving the two box trucks for the long
11:08 am
haul down i-5 to socal. ginger tells us once they drop items off items for her friend, the biggest challenge is finding out where to take the rest of the stuff to help other people and their pets who've been displaced by these fires. ginger is trying to find connections through the rotary club and other organizations. reporting live here in downtown livermore, bob redell, nbc bay area news. great to see so many people wanting to help out any way they can. all right, bob, thank you. and of course, our team is continuing to follow the wildfires down in la closely when we're not on air. we have so many great resources on our website. we're posting updates around the clock. just go to nbcbayarea.com, and you can also download our nbc bay area app for free. we're learning new details about a crash in san francisco involving a police chase that ended when the suspect drove into a liquor store. nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab has been at the scene all morning long and has more. reporter now, we don't know what led up to this car pursuit overnight, but we do know that the department's policy says a pursuit can happen
11:09 am
if officers have a reasonable suspicion that a felony or a violent misdemeanor has, is, or is about to happen. now, that car pursuit ended here on the corner of san bruno and paul avenue in san francisco's portola neighborhood. you can see the damage to the storefront that is now covered by this white tarp here. this building is on sale or for sale, i should say. the owners have been here all morning but have asked not to be on camera. they have. they are understandably distraught about the situation and how it may impact the sale of this property. now, the front of this building used to be a liquor store for about 30 years. fortunately, no one was in this building when the crash happened. let's give you a look at what the scene looked like around 4:00 this morning. you can see the san francisco pd patrol car and where it crashed, along with a white car that the suspect was driving. two officers and the suspect suffered minor injuries and were
11:10 am
transported to the hospital. also, damage that you can see on the street further down on paul avenue is a speed limit sign, a no stopping sign, a control box, and a street lamp that werell damaged because of this crash. the cleanup continues for the owners here inside the store. but again, fortunately, no one was injured inside the store. that is something that the owners are are saying is a silver lining to all of this. in san francisco, ginger conejero saab nbc, bay area news. well, just in the justice department could release a portion of former special counsel jack smith's report that deals with trump's efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. as soon as midnight, smith resigned from his position. on friday, the long awaited report into trump's election interference efforts in the lead up to the january 6th attack on the u.s. c capitol.t's expected to come out just days before trump takes the oath of office. trump was indicted on
11:11 am
four federal felony charges. this is in connection to the attempts to overturn his election loss. but the case was then delayed tactics and ultimately dropped after trump won the 2024 election. trump was denied all wrongdoing. well, coming up, our breaking coverage of the wildfires burning in southern california continue. the size of the fires, as we know, are enormous. we're breaking down how they compare to major cities and some crucial information from our consumer team on what you should be doing right now to make sure that you are covered in case of a wildfire emergency.

11:14 am
acres burned almost as big as some major u.s. cities, just to name a few. palisades fire has burned roughly 98% of the size of the city of boston, about 85% as big as the city of pittsburgh, and almost half the size of our state's capital, sacramento. meanwhile, palisades fire has grown to be as big as san francisco and bigger than miami. as the firefight continues in southern california, many children in los angeles headed back to school today. the l.a. unified school district announced most schools and offices are reopening, saying conditions have improved for a majority of areas across the region and it's safe for students and employees to return to campus. however, some schools will stay closed, especially those in the pacific palisades area, as many schools there have burned down. firefighters from mexico will hit the front lines today, helping fight the palisades fire. firefighters arrived saturday at lax and dozens received training yesterday at riverside to
11:15 am
prepare. the group includes members of the federal fire team and the mexican army. 73 firefighters will work alongside local fire crews. this is to set up those fire lines. cal fire says that they are thankful for the added manpower. well, new at 11, beyonce announces a $2.5 million donation to help families who lost their homes in the wake of the california wildfires. the be good la fire relief fund will also help churches and community centers address the needs of displaced residents, as well as helping those who lost their homes in the altadena and pasadena areas. the donations will be made through her foundation. los angeles. firestorm is a reminder for everyone you need a home inventory just to get any type of payment from your insurance company. consumer investigator chris chmura shows us what that is and how to easily create one. a home inventory is a list of everything you own and insure. if you ever have to file an insurance claim, you have to
11:16 am
prove what you had before you get paid. having a home inventory can help. this is your not so secret weapon, a smartphone. use it to record a video. nothing fancy. just walk through every room and go slowly. make sure the clip records everything in each room. talk about what you see. show the brand names and model numbers. speak about where you bought your stuff, when and how much you paid. your narration now might help jog your memory later on. go all over. open every drawer, every cupboard, every closet and just make sure that you're not just sticking with the house. but so many people have stuff in their garage too. when you're done, upload your video and any photos or documentation to the cloud in case your phone is destroyed or goes missing during a disaster. a full inventory can save you time, money, and heartache. and yet, an insurance industry survey found 80% of people in the pa year didn't have an inventory or didn't update it.
11:17 am
maybe that's because it's a bit of work, but it doesn't have to be. there's a number of tools that are now available, many available through your insurance company, probably for free. ask your agent about those tools and apps. after all, that's why you pay them a commission. thank you chris. well, new overnight, a sideshow causing a big police presence in oakland. take a look at. this. this was the scene last night around 11 at macarthur boulevard and 106th street. cars were doing donuts in the middle of the intersection. it's a big crowd looked on. police say they broke up the sideshow and eventually dispersed the crowd. also in oakland overnight, roberts target two 7-eleven stores. this is just a few hours ago. police say a group broke the front doors of the 7-eleven on thornhill drive and held the clerk at gunpoint. they stole cigarettes and a cash register and ran. shortly thereafter,
11:18 am
another robbery at the 7-eleven on pierson street. the suspects taking off with the same items. so far, no arrests have been made. well, we are moving the bay area for this midday with some big changes coming for bart riders starting this morning. i'm mike inouye is tracking all you need to know before the next time you plan your trip. all transit riders, in fact, should check their schedules today as timing has been adjusted. again. as we mentioned last year, 20 bay area transit agencies work together to better synchronize their schedules to help improve transit rider experience all around the bay. but do note a change for peninsula bart riders who have to make a new transfer on weeknights after 9 p.m. due to the big change we're talking about, bart is starting a new multi-year project, their first phase of a system wide upgrade from their 50 year old control system to a more efficient communications based train control system. what it means is we're going to be able to run trains closer together, more
11:19 am
trains that will actually be able to increase capacity through the transbay tube and all modern components. so less breakdowns because we're finally modernizing the system. so hopefully more reliable, more efficient. after this first phase on the peninsula, they'll see the benefit. then the rest of the work is expected to happen after hours and should be transparent to bart riders should be improvements will be incremental progressing over the next few years toward a smoother, shorter ride to work for all. back to you. thanks so much, mike. well, today, doctor jill biden heads to the bay area for a three day visit. it will likely be her last trip here as first lady. she is set to arrive at sfo at 430 this afternoon. tomorrow. on wednesday, she'll be in san francisco to talk to health care leaders about a white house initiative to advance women's health research. it's not clear if the first lady will attend any other events wednesday before leaving. lisa will have some nice weather while she's here. lots of sunshine. it's been pretty nice,
11:20 am
calm, but the wind has been the issue in some spots and it's been mainly the north bay where we've had those gusty winds picking up, but we're also feeling it in san francisco. take a look at four of our microclimates, those live cameras, the current temperatures. and we can see the wind speed where the wind in san francisco is coming in at 21mph. so that's definitely a brisk breeze that we're seeing there, as well as walnut creek and palo alto winds at about 10 to 15mph and at times getting a little bit higher. but at the same time, we are seeing some of the tidal levels coming up a little bit higher, higher due to the gravitational pull of the moon. if you were out early this morning or late last night, you may have seen that full moon. we are going to see the king tide affect us for one more day, and this will be in effect until noon. so we're pretty much past some of the highest tides. if you've been outside and you're like, oh, it's kind of chilly out here, take a look at some of the temperatures that we are seeing in some other parts of
11:21 am
the country. there's been this big plunge of this very cold arctic air. and right now in minneapolis, the temperature is at six degrees. it is at 25 in saint louis. and we're also seeing that cold air pushing its way off towards the south and east. so we've seen the big change i the temperatures elsewhere here. it's been pretty moderate and actually above normal for this time of year, headed for thepper 50s and low 60s. today, napa will see a high of 62, as well as 62 in san francisco and palo alto and upper 50s for dublin and livermore, with mid 60s for the south bay. tomorrow. we're also going to come up a couplof momore degre in some spots, like the south county, with a high of 64 degrees in morgan hill tomorrow and on wednesday. it's still about the same. pretty nice and warm with sunshine and also a light wind. but speaking of the wind, we will be under a wind advisory until 10:00
11:22 am
tomorrow morning for these areas shaded in brown. this includes those elevations above 1000ft, where some of those gusts may top 50mph. and because we've had quite a bit of rainfall, we're not as concerned about the fire danger. but there still may be some downed trees and impacts to power, especially over the next few hours. with that wind coming in from the northeast at about 25 to 30mph, eventually starting to relax and calm down later on tonight. but a pretty brisk wind across the bay area as the dry weather continues and this high pressure is just not budging. so we're not expecting a change in our pattern, at least for the next week. a look at our inland temperatures in the 7-day forecast each day. highs reach into the mid 60s and overnight lows very chilly, even close to freezing in some spots down to the mid 30s and just slightly cooler for the weekend. but notice there are no rain chances in this forecast and the dry weather extends at least through
11:23 am
sunday. hoping for a change in this pattern sometime soon. back to you. all right kerry thank you. well, happening now, the u.s. supreme court has shut down meta's bid to avoid a multi-million dollar class action lawsuit. advertisers suing meta, saying that the company inflated the number of people its ads would reach. well, meta argues that the advertisers are too diverse to combine into a single lawsuit, but the judge's decision today means that advertisers can continue to band together to seek damages from meta. coming up, we're going to take a look at the wildfires burning in southern california.
11:24 am
i guess what i'm looking for from you is, i mean, i know how the fire affected me, and there's always a constant fear that who's to say something like that won't happen again?
