5:31 pm
starts right now. thanks so much for joining us. i'm janelle wang and i'm raj mathai. we begin with the wild scene in san francisco. a chase, a crash, and two sfpd officers ending up in the hospital. two people who the cops were chasing were also taken to the hospital and then arrested. here's nbc's sergio quintana. a small crew of emergency damage workers spent the morning piecing together a temporary frame and plywood door after a police suv crashed into the building at the corner of san bruno and paul avenues. it all happened just across the street from where martha gutierrez lives. she shared video with us showing what she saw out her apartment window. she says the police suv seemed to try to cut off a white sedan in the intersection during a chase. you can see the skid mark that's from the police suv as it skidded through the intersection and then careened into the side of the building. video from the scene also shows the damage done to the sfpd cruiser. we're told
5:32 pm
both officers in the suv were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injurs. gutierrez says after the crash, four people in the car that they were chasing jumped out and tried to get away. she watched as officers chase all four of them down. police say ahi se llevaron a los delinquents. gutierrez says the police did a good job catching them. according to a statement from san francisco police, four people were initially detained on scene, but police ultimately arrested only two of them, who were also taken to the hospital for minor injuries. the white sedan officers were chasing also crashed, knocking out a light pole and damaging a pg&e gas metering box. according to a pg&e spokesperson, no gas lines were damaged and no customer service was ever affected. the spokesperson says it's a non-critical piece of equipment, but it will need to be replaced. the incident has some raising questions about when police chases should and shouldn't be allowed. according to the police statement, this is a chase that actually started a few miles
5:33 pm
away in the south of market district. officers spotted the suspicious vehicle that ran away from an attempted stop earlier this weekend. police say they also found a gun in the car while charges are pending in this case. an sfpd spokesperson did not say what crimes the two men were arrested for. last ye, san francisco voters approved measure e, which now allows officers to chase suspects for all felonies and violent misdemeanors in san francisco. sergio quintana, nbc, bay area news. our other top story tonight more dangerous fire conditions down in la, and that means more homes and lives could be threatened. here are the latest numbers. now, officials have confirmed the fires have killed a total of 24 people. the palisades fire has burned almost 24,000 acres. this is the big one across the pacific palisades and into malibu. it's also threatening the communities of brentwood, encino and westwood. westwood is where ucla is. the eaton fire, which is near pasadena and altadena, has burned more than
5:34 pm
14,000 acres. 16 of the 24 deaths so far are from this fire. one woman's father died in his home in altadena, omari my time 810 central standard time and said, baby, i'm getting ready to have to evacuate. you know, about the fire. and i said, okay, dad. he said, i love you. he said, but we're going to have to evacuate. that's all right. so before we hung up the phone, he said, baby, i gotta go. the fire made it to my yard. so sad for so many families. la fire officials say they have made progress over the weekend when the santa ana winds slowed down. however, here comes those winds again. a red flag warning is once again in effect through wednesday in parts of la and ventura counties. raj will he or won't he? shortly after donald trump becomes president next monday, he will face a request from governor newsom for
5:35 pm
wildfire assistance funds. normally, these disaster requests are honored by congress and the president in short order. but will they be honored this time? president elect already blaming governor newsom for these wildfires? our political analyst, larry gerston, joins us now. larry, we have many natural disasters, fr hurricanes to flooding. we've had wildfires in california before. how does this process work in the country when a state needs assistance? yeah, janelle it's terrible. of course, it's a two pronged process when you've got a natural disaster. okay. first of all, the president gets asked for fema help. the federal emergency management agency, right. and immediately what happens is there's $700 per person for little incidental things just to get through. there's firefighting equipment covered. there's bulldozers and other things like that covered. and also temporary occupancy, temporary shelter for people so that, you know, they can get through the next few days. that's all they're talking about right now, the next few days. so that's part one. and that's pretty pro forma if you will.
5:36 pm
not too many problems. and all things considered it's not that costly. okay. that gets the ball rolling. this is all short term. what about long term. the extensive measures what happens beyond that point. yeah. now we're talking about big bucks. now we're talking about a much more cumbersome process because governor newsom is already preparing a letter, so to speak, asking president trump and congress for billions and billions of dollars. how much? we don't know yet. and that's why he's not going to send that in for a while. but it's going to cover everything roads, bridges, highways, government buildings, all the all the infrastructure, the repairing the electrical, repairing the water systems, both the people drinking all the wastewater. all of these things will cost tens of billions of dollars. and this this request will go to the president and the congresess. n, at that point, at that point, congress then considers this and then makes a decision and passes on a big amount through some
5:37 pm
sort of a vote that they have downstream, hopefully sooner than later. but it could take a couple of months. okay. president trump and governor newsom have met before when in his first round as president, he came up here, i think it was the paradise fire. seemed like they were cooperative together and worked together. do you think there is a possibility there will be a hitch this time with president trump this second term? it's hard to know because while they were cooperative at the same time, trump took a shot at at newsom. he said, why don't they use more rakes, if you might remember that used more rakes to clean it up. why don't you use your water in different ways to help the farmers and to and to put out fires, rather than to help the fish in the bay? so things like that have come out of out of trump's mouth. he's not happy with newsom. of course, these days they've really gone at it. so to your question, would trump, would trump go along? we don't know for sure. it would be a slap in the face to california if he did not. but he's done it before. during his first term of president, trump denied federal
5:38 pm
funding for wildfires in the state of washington because he had a tiff with the washington governor, jay inslee. so it's happened before. would he do it here? we don't know. but i'll tell you one thing. if it does happen, it'll be a black mark for him, that's for sure. but more and more than that, you're talking about 200,000 people have been evacuated. you're talking about 20,000 homes that have already been destroyed. this is an awful lot. so we can expect a great big ask from newsom. and i think by all said and done, by the time all is said and done, congress will come up with some amount of it for fema to distribute here. and hopefully the president will go along and sign off it. but it will. it's no gimme. yeah. for certain. he'll make some jabs on the way to that. okay. thank you. okay. thank you larry. we will continue our coverage of the southern california wildfires in our 6:00 newscast. bigad shaban will join us live from la, where many students haven't been able to go to school since the fires erupted. plus, how local crews are still helping to get the flames under

control. that's all. coming up at 6:00. a federal judge cleared the way today for a portion of the special counsel's report on former president trump to be released. that report deals with mr. trump's efforts to overturn the his 2020 election loss. the long awaited report into trump's election interference efforts leading up to the january 6th attack on the capitol is expected to come out just days before next week's inauguration. trump was indicted on four federal felony charges. the case was ultimately dropped after he won the 2024 election, just a couple of months ago. mr. trump has denied all wrongdoing. special counsel jack smith resigned from his position last friday. well, doctor jill biden is in the bay area for a three day visit. her last trip here as first lady, she landed at sfo about an hour ago tomorrow. and wednesday she'll be in san francisco to talk to health care leaders about a white house initiative to advance women's health research. it's not clear if the first lady will attend

our weather as we kick off the week. also some dangerous conditions down in la. and look, we had some really gusty winds here in the bay area earlier this morning. some of the mountains did get up over 60mph. but as we roll through tonight, next couple of days, i don't see any problems with wind back here in the bay area, but southern california again is still in it. so let's start it off and take a look at these top wind gusts that we had here through california. this is over the past 24 hours, san gabriel mountains in southern california, up to 67mph. simi valley 47 palisades fire in that fire zone got up to about 42. and then back here in the bay area, we had 64mph mount saint helena this morning. oakland hills also reaching 49. so while our wind will continue to decrease, it's here in southern california. the setup is going to be just right. unfortunately for them to get these santa ana winds back. so you can see most of southern california remains under these red flag fire
5:46 pm
warnings, winds up to 70mph all the way through the day on wednesday. then by 11 p.m. on wednesday, we would start to see that wind calming down here and certainly looking much better on thursday's forecast. no big rain chances the next two weeks for them or for us. so we're going to continue to be all over this. and we've got more reports at nbcbayarea.com. as we get a look at the overall weather pattern. what we're seeing is this area of high pressure. it's keeping the storm track way off to the north. and then we have that system sneaking in here from the south. and that's whatat's realy kicking up the wind in southern california. so as we roll through tomorrow's forecast with that clear weather back here, for us, it's going to enable those temperatures to drop. so we're going to get back down here to some chilly weather. make sure to have that heaviest jacket as you step out the door tomorrow morning. so you're good to go. we're going to dip it down to 39 here in the tri-valley peninsula 42 and the south bay right there at 40. also coming in with upper 30s and low 40s, east bay, san francisco and the north bay. temperatures as we move through tomorrow. coming in with 60. 63
5:47 pm
in cupertino, 62 in los gatos down to morgan hill, 65 right out here across the east bay, 61 in oakland down to fremont, 62 and 64 in concord, up across the peninsula, 61 in san mateo down to palo alto, 63 light winds, sunny skies in san francisco make it a pretty good day. 59 in the marina and 62 in the mission up across the north bay, 64 in clear lake and 62 in sonoma on the 7-day forecast. as we look ahead towards that weekend, we'll stay dry here with a little bit of cloud cover in san francisco, temps in the 50s to 60s for highs and will be in the 40s right here for the morning temperatures. take a look at the inland valleys. we have some chilly mornings ahead. looks like those 30s tomorrow morning, wednesday and thursday and then 50s and 60s here across the inland valleys for those highs. so again, very happy to report for the bay area. we are out of the wind situation the next couple of days. but in southern

california it will continue through the day on wednesday. and we've got more reports coming up tonight at six. i know all of us have friends and family down there, and you just hear stories from so many different people, and for them to have to go through this next wind event, it's just it really is heartbreaking. it's just emotionally overwhelming for so many people. thank you jeff. jeff. up next, a coveted free agent decides to skip out on the giants, but the team has a backup plan. how this future hall of famer right there

pitcher roki sasaki is expected to announce this week which team he will sign with for the upcoming season. we know this much. it won't be with the giants. it's not going to be the giants. nope. in fact, today, buster posey said sasaki won't sign here in the bay area. however, the giants did sign a future hall of famer, justin verlander. our giants insiders discuss how the aging all star can still help this team. one thin that immediately stood out to me and one reason i thought, and i've talked about him a lot the last couple months, that he made some sense was you have this group of kyle harrison, hayden birdsong, landon, rupe, these guys who, you know, logan webb's the veteran. now robbie ray has been around a long time, but jordan hicks has never been a starter before really. so they now they have justin verlander like you mentioned literally next stop is cooperstown. is that narrative. is that like a writer thing a fan thing where
5:52 pm
you go like this is going to be great. these guys will learn from it. or is that you are in a clubhouse for a long time. is that real? like, is he going to be sitting there with kyle harrison talking about four seamers all the time? or what do you think of that aspect of it? you know, it's interesting and i think that guys stay in this game so long, and he's one of the few that have done it for this long. he's had a tremendous career. but when you've done it for that long, i think a part of you just wants to help the younger generation coming up, because what you're leaving is something that you've done for arguably your whole life, right? i mean, the guy was drafted in in oh four, maybe. he made his debut in oh five, and he's been playing baseball since he was probably five years old. and his chapter of baseball is coming to an end. and it's been a very long chapter. and i think that when you start to view that, that your end is near, at some point you want to help the next generation to succeed, to keep on the traditions of baseball that, you know, you've worked so hard and ingrained in yourself for the better part of your entire life. so, i mean, i think that for guys like robbie ray
5:53 pm
and logan webb, you're definitely going to have that that competitive factor of having a guy who's sitting next to you in the clubhouse, a good clubhouse guy, obviously, and he's done it at a high level for a very long. you're going to want to, you know, go show them that. hey, look, you know, i may not be on the way to cooperstown yet, but this is what i bring to the table. and those young guys, i'm sure are just going to watch and see what it's taken to get this guy this far in his career. there are there are there's a mentality that's very important for these young guys. there's routines, there's preparation. there's how guys go about their business. and you know those young guys in that clubhouse and in that rotation. on the pitching side specifically, they're going to be able to learn a heck of a lot just by watching justin verlander go about his business. and justin verlande married to supermodel kate upton. so we will likely see her at the ballpark this spring. you can follow all of the giants offseason moves by downloading the very popular giants talk podcast. still to come, a sigh of relief for basketball superstar caitlin clark, how police stopped an
