her support, likely clearing heg hegseth's path to confirmation. >> this comes five days before donald trump takes office. several more key hearings scheduled today. pam bondi nominated for attorney general, secretary of state nominee, marco rubio, and john ratcliffe to run the cia. we have it all covered. garrett haake is on duty. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. yeah, it is a busy week ahead on capitol hill. but yesterday's hearing for trump pentagon pick, pete hegseth, was the only one of the day, meaning the spotlight on hegseth was bright and the questions, at times, were heated. still, at the end of the day, he managed to lockup the support of a key republican skeptic, likely clearing his path towards confirmation, possiblys early as next week. pete hegseth earning a key republican vote on his path to the pentagon. joni ernst, a veteran,

announcing last night she'd support him after a fiery hearing on capitol hill, with senate democrats repeatedly questioning hegseth's fitness and his qualifications for office. >> i do not believe that you are qualified to meet the overwhelming demands of this job. >> reporter: the decorated army combat veteran and former fox news host vowing to shake up the pentagon. >> it is time to give someone with dust on his boots the helm. a change agent. >> reporter: but he spent much of the hearing on defense, deflecting questions about the encounter with a woman accusing him of sexual assault in 2017, an allegation he has denied. police investigated but prosecutors did not file charges. hegseth said the encounter was consensual and he paid his accuser an undisclosed amount in 2023 as part of a settlement agreement. >> you admitted it was consensual and you were still married and you just had a child by another woman. again, how do you explain your judgment? >> false charges against me. >> reporter: multiple senators pressed hegseth about alleged excessive drinking on the job. mark kelly highlighting his time leading the veterans organization.

>> you needed to be carried out of the event for being intoxicated. >> senator -- >> true. -- more smears. >> reporter: hegseth also confirmed he'd abstain from control if approved. republican senators -- >> how many senators have shown up drunk to vote at night? have any of you guys asked them to step down and resign from their job? >> we need somebody who will go in there and fight for innovation, fight for change. i think you're that person. i appreciate your willingness to sit here and listen to some of these undignified attacks. >> reporter: hegseth also facing scrutiny over his past opposition to women in combat, a position he's softened since his nomination. >> because i'm straight up just saying we should not have women in combat roles. >> you will have to change how you see women to do this job well, and i don't know if you are capable of that. >> reporter: during the contentious and partisan hearing, hegseth also earning some laughs from the room.

>> you are quite sure that every general who serves should not go directly into the defense industry for ten years. you're not willing to make that same pledge? >> i'm not a general, senator. [ laughter ] >> reporter: and there are three major hearings scheduled today for officials donald trump hopes to have confirmed by day one. his secretary of state pick, marco rubio, should get a warm welcome on his return to the senate. the potential cia chief, john ratcliffe's hearing will be split into two parts, one open, one classified. in this room, all eyes on pam bondi. the former florida ag donald trump tapped to lead the department of justice. that hearing, that job so critical, that the hearing will be split across two days. savannah? >> all right. garrett haake leading us off. we want to turn to hallie jackson. good morning. i mean, hegseth getting that vote of support. it is not literally a vote but a pledge of support from senator ernst with her own military background.

that's a big deal. does that mean this confirmation is more or less headed in the right direction for him? >> the trump team is feeling good about it. especially considering what you heard from senator ernst. democrats raised a whole bunch of questions over the course of that very long hearing about not just the allegations you heard laid out, but qualifications, questions about judgment, his decision-making capabilities. to knock him out of contention, they needed to land the punch with somebody like ernst. clearly, they did not. it seems like hegseth, barring any surprises, is on track here. >> let's look ahead to the other ones here. to garrett's point, you have about a dozen more of these confirmation hearings to come. secretary of state, attorney general coming up next. what will you be watching for? >> couple big ones. for senator marco rubio, he is a colleague of the people he will be in the room facing. the question with him is really going to be about how many democrats might actually get on squn board. we want to see how many

democrats we can get behind senator rubio here to serve as secretary of state. john fetterman signalled he would, in fact, back rubio. pam bondi, a close trump ally, and the position will be so critical here. remember, the next attorney general will be, in so many ways, the tip of the spear for president-elect trump's campaign pledge to enact retribution on political opponents here. expect her to face serious questions from democrats on that over the course of the next couple days. we're also looking ahead to controversial picks like robert f. kennedy jr. his confirmation hearing is not on the schedule yet. he has been tasked to lead the nation's health agencies. that is interesting because of his positions on vaccines. democrats are already raising questions there. some republicans may raise those questions, too. keep in mind that you have seen a full-court press, though. you saw it with hegseth, these outside groups coming in, spending big money on ads, including, in hegseth's case, in critical places like iowa, to

try to convince senators to get on board. explicit primary threats if these republican senators do not. that's why you have heard so much framing here. the confirmation hearings are a loyal tell for president-elect donald trump. so far, the trump folks are feeling good about how it's going. >> iowa, the home state of joni ernst, hallie. thank you very much. also this morning, those strong winds have returned to southern california, creating new challenges in the week-long battle against those devastating wildfires. as that fight continues, we're now learning more about how some of those fires may have st started. morgan chesky is in pacific palisades with the latest for us. morgan, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, craig. right now there are fire crews and millions across southern california hoping and praying these red flag warnings do not turn into yet another fire. here we are, more than a week since this inferno began. the damage totals, frankly, stunning. early estimates suggest these fires may have cost upwards of $275 billion in damages.

and right now, the cause is still unknown, and this fire fight far from over. overnight, winds again kicking up in the los angeles area as crews work to remove brush along the fire-ravaged pacific coast highway. 37 people still remain unaccounted for, and at least 25 have lost their lives. more than 60 square miles of l.a. county scorched. from above, the scope of devastation clear. >> you can turn around and then another structure will start burning. >> reporter: air teams attacking hot spots with the help of crucial line crews. we joined one high in the topanga canyon. in this team, firefighters from mexico and colorado. with most of the major flames knocked down, this is the front line of this fire fight. crews tackling hot spots one by one. for lead firefighter josh simon, the search for embers not far from his childhood home. >> you can have an ember sitting here for how long? >> weeks. >> reporter: really?

near the coast, investigators still searching for what ignited the palisades fire. atf telling nbc news, agents are expecting burn patterns and the fire's depth. >> we are following all the leads and processing all the physical evidence. >> reporter: residents like peter branch may have clues. refusing to evacuate, he told nbc los angeles the deadly fire behind his home broke out in the same area as a new year's blaze sparked by fireworks. >> it can smolder for weeks, possibly months. >> reporter: in pasadena, pedro rojas recorded this video at the base of an electrical transmission power in eaton canyon, the possible source of that fire. officials are investigating. at least two new lawsuits filed now blame power company so cal edison, alleging negligence for, in part, failing to de-energize that line, whichch they sa

sparked the deadly eaton fire. they have the public safety power shut-off they could have used and chose not to. >> reporter: in a statement, the utility company saying they're reviewing the lawsuits. but amid the ruins, some community spirit. at this local bookstore in altadena, no room for books, only donations. >> we have just become this hub where people can come and get what they need. >> reporter: and as these communities come together, authorities say there are unfortunately still people trying to take advantage, telling us they have arrested four on arson charges for allegedly trying to start new fires, in addition to multiple other people for looting. meantime, today is the first day that fema's relief centers will be open all day long. craig, hard to believe, but there are still more than 80,000 people under evacuation warnings, waiting to get back home. craig. >> that is hard to believe. morgan chesky for us in california. thank you. breaking news from south korea overnight. its impeached president detained by anti-corruption investigators after a long standoff at his home.

this comes more than a month after he briefly imposed martial law there. nbc's janis mackey frayer in the region, joining us now. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. this is a first in south korea's history. a sitting president being arrested. yoon suk-yeol was holed up in his residence in seoul since impeached last month after the short-lived declaration of martial law. police surrounded yoon's residence before dawn. some used ladders. climbing over buses that had been parked as barriers by a security detail. yoon said in a video that he agreed to go to avoid a violent clash. that was a worry since the standoff a couple weeks ago when investigators first tried to detain him. he struck a deal today. he wasn't handcuffed. he left in a presidential motorcade. not a police car. yoon is being investigated for insurrection. he says that investigation is illegal, and he still has support among south korean conservatives. they've been showing up on his street, outside of his house

every day, a lot of them waiving american flags, wearing red ball hats and carrying signs that say, "stop the steal." sound familiar? at the same time, judges will decide whether yoon should be formally removed as leader. right now, he's only suspended. this crisis has thrown the south korean politics into disarray. this is a key u.s. ally. some 28,000 american troops are based there. 48 hours, that's how long police can hold yoon in custody. he's said to be in a solitary cell and facing a lot of questions, savannah. >> thank you very much. lots more to get to on a wednesday morning, including a new round of brutal winter weather. a mix of snow and freezing temperatures creating hazardous travel conditions for tens of millions this morning. mr. roker standing by with that full forecast. first, nbc's shaquille brewster joins us from cleveland.

shaq, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is cleveland, january. folks expect to be chilly, but across the region, you have temperatures well below average. it's the combination of the snow, the cold, and the wind that are leading to possibly and potentially dangerous conditions. this morning, a bitter cold snap gripping the nation's heartland and sweeping all the way to the east coast. weather advisories felt far and wide with windchills dipping bee low zero. cities racing to salt roads to keep drivers safe from snow and ice. >> it's been hard. >> reporter: multi-car cashes shutting down treacherous roadways in michigan, and indiana police saying an officer

had to drive off the road to avoid getting struck by a semi-truck. an employee was critically injured when she was struck by a snowplow in the parking lot. and parts of lake erie are frozen. with temperatures dipping below one degree in cincinnati, they are investigating a case of hypothermia. it's the third case in the past week. now, this morning, with the unrelenting cold, millions are hoping the freeze will let up. and these temperatures are going to take folks here on somewhat of a ride over the next couple days. later this week, they'll go back up to about average. once we get to this weekend and into early next week, that's when they're expecting another arctic blast. we may be wishing for the temperatures we're feeling right now. >> shaq brewster, we can see your breath. thank you. get inside. >> and it smells delicious, shaq. okay? let's go to al. it will be a cold one. >> we're taking a look at fayetteville, new york, courtesy of our good friends there. the snow coming down. we have more bitter cold as shaq

good morning. it is 726. i'm laura garcia. here's a look at our top stories, including oakland leaders rethinking the police chase policy. i'm bob redell tonight. the oakland police commission, which oversees opd, will hold a town hall to hear from oaklanders about their concerns over the department's restrictive non pursuit policy. right now, as it stands, oakland police officers are prohibited from going after suspects unless they have a firearm or suspected of a violent crime. the city implemented this restrictive policy back in 2014, after an audit found that vehicle pursuits were causing too many crashes and injuries to officers, bystanders and suspects. right now, opd and the city administrator are revising this pursuit policy, which will be presented to the oakland police commission next week. transportation and technology leaders are gathering in san francisco today to map out the future of bay area transit. it is a panel discussion on the integration of transportation systems with the advent of

sunday if it's not sold. new efforts are under way now to stop that. in the meantime, the threat of going without their favorite app has some users unexpectedly turning to other platforms, chinese platforms. >> savannah sellers has been covering this from the beginning. good morning to you. >> good morning. so the supreme court took up an emergency hearing last week about tiktok and could weigh in as early as today. efforts to force the sale of the company owned by chinese-owned bytedance are ramping up, at as two new chinese-based social platforms are now soaring in popularity. >> you can't do this! >> reporter: time the running out for tiktok, the supreme court set to rule as soon as today whether or not to uphold a u.s. ban on the popular app. in a hearing last week, the justices expressi ing skepticis that a ban on the app would violate users' first amendment rights. the bipartisan law set to go into effect on sunday says

tiktok must be sold away from its chinese ownership because of national security concerns. china could steal user's data or manipulate content shown to americans. >> china is engaged in an ongoing, unrelenting effort to hack the united states. now, they've got a surveillance tool in everybody's pocket. the software doesn't just have funny videos. it also collects everywhere you go, everybody you talk to, everybody you work with. >> reporter: tiktok denies they share data with the chinese government. but new names are surfacing as potential buyers for the platform. >> let's go, elon! >> reporter: including elon musk who owns x and is a close adviser to president-elect trump, who supports saving the app. both bloomberg and "the wall street journal" citing people familiar with the discussions say chinese officials are weighing an option to allow musk to take control. >> i think the worst thing that could happen to tiktok beside getting shut down is elon buying it. >> reporter: musk, who famously bought twitter after joking about it, has said nothing, and

tiktok calls the suggestion pure fiction. st shark tank star kevin o'leary says he and other investors are also making a play. >> we're the only syndicate to put a real bid in front of the shareholdersthe syndicates, and the chinese government. >> reporter: tiktok owner bytedance says the platform isn't actually for sale. in the face of the ban, some users have flocked everywhere. >> tiktok refugees from the u.s., welcome to red note. >> i'm new here, and i came from tiktok. >> reporter: propelling two other chinese-based platforms to the top spots in the app stores with red note, an app similar to instagram, also owned by bytedance. another just behind it. those apps could eventually face a ban due to its chinese ownership and similar concerns. now, the ball is with the supreme court as we wait their decision on tiktok's appeal. >> now, president trump has been a vocal supporter of the app.

now, the u.s. preventive services task force is issuing important guidance on who should get screened for that disease. dr. natalie azar is here to break it down. what is the panel recommending? >> right. the panel has a nuanced update. from the last recommendations, they're essentially recommending bone density screening for women 65 and older, or post-menopausal women younger than 65 who have risk factors for osteoporosis. they have not made a screening for or against men. what i will say is a lot of other medical societies do recommend screening for men above the age of 70. if you are a guy out there and listening, i do recommend talking to your health care provider. men do get osteoporosis, too. it's more frequent in women. >> definitely for women under 65, what are some of the other risk factors, and how do you know if you need a bone scan? >> absolutely. there are a lot of them. probably one of the most important factors is your genetics. it can contribute to maybe about 75% of your risk of osteoporosis.

as well as a fily history, for example, of a hip fracture. other ones include early menopause, current smoking, excessive drinking, low body weight. a lot of medications are an underlying conditions. steroids, antiseizure medications, celiac disease. rheumatoid art rielts -- arthritis. have a conversation with your doctor. >> a lot of doctors will say, are you taking your calcium. is ipreventable? >> i'm glad you brought that up because there is a lot of mixed messaging on calcium and vitamin d. in terms of preventing osteoporosis, we recommend a healthy lifestyle. yes, we need calcium and adequate vitamin d to absorb the calcium. for all of you folks out there with kids who are teenagers now or will be teenagers one day, that is the period of most rapid bone growth where calcium is really essential. get the peak bone mass. limit alcohol, no smoking and stay active for no other reason than to prevent falls. as my mentor has said, the best way to prevent a fracture is to

we hear a lot about gut health. it may not be as sexy to talk about as heart health and other things. break it down. why is gut health so important? >> when we're applying a wholistic approach to health, we understand the body is interconnected. when you look back thousands of years, they knew to start with the gut. it was ground zero for your health. brain health, hormones, inflammation, liver health, all these different things, your gut is your starting point. >> you can't talk about these other things because the epicenter is here. >> we're band-aiding a lot. dealing with these, you know, in silos. but really what we want is that wholistic approach. >> what should we be consuming? talking about our diet. >> we start with diet. the number one starting point is bring things in that help with digestion. coconut oil acts as an ant antifungal and balances things. we're all missing out on fiber. blend your fruits and vegetables, don't juice them.

it gives you an additional 8 to 10 grams of fiber when we're trying to get to 30. >> what do you mean? >> blend them in a blender, drink it and don't lose the fiber. we need that fiber for a healthy gut. in addition to that, there is a tea that works beautifully for the gut. it is called a ccf tea. it's cumin, coriander and fennel. helps the guy jsystem, moves th through. don't skip healthy fats. it's really important. >> the anatomy of the gut is you want a healthy balance of some of the bacterias and things. you need that for digestion. you want to find them. >> definitely. we want to talk about what's happening in the gut itself. what we understand there is there are bacteria. and having the right balance of bacteria will do a number of things like balance blood sugar and lower inflammation. we want to get those probiotics in for sure. we want things like soluble fiber. we talked about the blended juices, but we want soluble fiber as well. keep things moving. there are a lot of great remedies. there is okra juice.
