hi everyone i'm zinhle essamuah.. "nbc news daily" starts right now. breaking news, dramatic deal, israel and hamas reach a historic cease-fire agreement after a last-minute negotiation. what we are learning about how it came together and how soon some of the hostages could be freed. dangerous winds are sweeping across parts of los angeles today, but a great -- break in the extreme weather could be on the horizon. how soon before the crews could gain the upper hand. six of president-elect trump's takes for cabinet positions are on the capitol hill today. who's facing the toughest questions from senators. don't play ball? more apparent say they are

pulling their kids out of youth sports, why, and what all families should consider. thanks so much for joining "nbc news daily" on this busy newsday. we begin this are in the middle east, israel and hamas have reached an agreement for a cease-fire to pause israel's war in gaza and released dozens ofof hostage across the gion, people are rejoicing this achievement, taking to the streets to celebrate. but the agreement is not a fully done deal yet. it will still need ratification from the israeli cabinet but it's expected to go into effect in the coming days. it features a six week stop infighting and the release of some of the hostages over that time, that does include
12:03 pm
americans. and it brings hope of an eventual end to a devastating war that has killed more than 46,000 people in gaza, that's according to the hamas run health ministry. roughly 100 of the 250 hostages initially kidnapped were believed to be in gaza but it remains unclear how many are still alive. >> there was no other way for this war to end then with the hostage deal and i'm deeply satisfied this day has finally come, for the sake of the people of israel and the families, waiting in agony. for the sake of innocent people in gaza, who suffered unimaginable devastation because of the war. >> let's get right to international correspondent raf sanchez, what can you tell us about what appears to be a multi-phased deal and how it would be enacted? >> this will go into effect on sunday and it will be the first of three phases, phase 1, is a six week cease-fire in gaza, hamas will release 33 hostages
12:04 pm
from the humanitarian category that's women, children, the elderly, and those who are sick or badly wounded. and in return, israel is expected to release hundreds of palestinian prisoners and also to allow a surge of very badly needed aid to get inside of gossip, -- gaza, the forces will withdraw from the major cities and they will pull back to the edges of the gaza strip, but they will not pull out all together. the key question here, is while the cease-fire is in place during phase 1, can the negotiators get an agreement to move on to phase 2 because that would lead to the complete end of the war, and to the release of all living hostages, there are around 100 hostages in gaza, we don't know exactly how many of them are alive but the hope is that by phase 2, all of them would be out of this. >> as president biden said in
12:05 pm
his remarks, the framework of this deal has been largely the same since may so what changed in the last few days and weeks? >> i asked that question of jake sullivan, the national security advisor at a press conference in tel aviv a couple of weeks ago and he said the key turning point was when a cease-fire deal was reached to end the fighting between israel and hezbollah, he said when that cease-fire was finalized, hamas realized it was truly isolated in the region, and it was prepared to come back to the table in a serious way but i think it cannot be underestimated, zinhle, the influence of president-elect trump who has been saying for weeks now that if there is not a deal by the day of his inauguration on january 20th, in his words, there will be hell to pay. that deadline really focused

minds inside the negotiating rooms and officials it was a big part of the reason why we have an agreement. >> thanks so much. dangerous wind warnings are still in effect in southern california, as firefighters worked to get the upper hand on the ongoing deadly wildfires. the eat-in fire is almost 50% contained, progress in the palisades fire has also slowed over the last few days. it's nearly 20% contained however, there still a critical fire risk across much of los angeles county today. at least 25 people have been killed, that's up one from yesterday, tens of thousands of people are still under evacuation orders more than a week after the fires began. dana griffin is in altadena, the danger is far from over, firefighters have made big progress with the eat-in fire, what are you seeing and hearing in that community today?
12:07 pm
>> they even said there was little to no progress in both the palisades and the eat-in fire in the last 24 hours, so that's a great sign considering that we got these gusty winds and we are under the red flag warning. we are told today may be the strongest gust, especially in the mountains, so we are not out of the woods yet but we have seen an overwhelming show of support from people popping up on corners, creating these makeshift donation centers and a moment ago we were down the street a mile away when we ran into a drive-up donation center and found a early familiar face, actress eva longoria, she was dedicated to focusing on the evacuees that were coming up as she was handing them donations and we took a little minute to ask a question, let's listen. >> just trying to work and get it done and be here for the community and making sure everybody is having their urgent needs taken care of. >> now some areas here in altadena have been able to go
12:08 pm
back, some repopulation is starting but the rest of the areas that have been evacuated, it's unclear when the residence will be officially allowed to go back in. bill, let's bring you in, dana mentioned the strong winds, it seems as though the worst of it may be over but what should the viewers expect for the rest of the day and the next few days? we are so close to getting through the situation without any major escalations of fires or structures being burned, so cross your fingers, we are almost there, this will go until about 3:00 this time, we are watching the winds highs in the angeles national forest. we still have strong winds especially in ventura county. if we have any fires that form, they would have the potential for explosive growth but this evening the winds die off a little bit. we still have an offshore flow
12:09 pm
so it'll still be breezy and dry, it's not until tomorrow, the winds go down to the single digits, the moisture comes in off the water and that means it's more humid and it'll be the first time in a week that the stress levels will drop. >> thank you both. it's another big day on capitol hill, several of president-elect trump's cabinet picks are appearing before the senate for their confirmation hearings, two of the hearings that we've been watching closely are john radcliffe and pam bondi, they have close relationships with president- elect trump and were asked by democratic senators about their willingness to fire people or take inappropriate actions at the behest of mr. trump.

12:12 pm
committee. when it comes to radcliffe, senators feel confident that he would be somebody who acts independently and they have some proof of that especially when it comes to the tail end of trump's last administration, he tried to get him to do some things when it comes to the 2020 election and radcliffe said he would not. seems like senators on both sides of the aisle are satisfied but i think for both of these pics, republicans will put them over the finish line. >> a major bank is being accused of cheating customers out of $2 billion and met her is preparing to make major cuts. >> the consumer financial protecti bureau has sued
