held a town hall last night to get public feedback. governor gavin newsom recently demanded the city end its policies, which include supervisor approval, to chase someone going more than 50mph. if there is no change, he's threatening to pull the chp crime fighting help. people on both sides of the issue wei wast we were mourning the death of black men at the hands of the police officers. and so i'm really just concerned about the tenor of this conversation. i ask and plead for behalf of all the business. you guys need to come up with something. this is not working. department leaders are already indicating they're open to altering the policy. the commission will hold a vote next week. well, now to a heartbreaking follow up. the three people who died in the head on crash in gilroy were students from hollister high school. rightow, roadside memorial is growing for those students who lost their lives.
5:07 am
the crash happened tuesday night. chp saying the four teenagers were traveling on shore road in gilroy. their car veered into oncoming traffic, hitting another car. three of those students died. a fourth was rushed to the hospital along with the driver of the other car. the names of those students have not been released, but the great grandmother of one of those students says her family is in shock. we're all broken hearted. brokenhearted. he was going to graduate this this senior year. this year he's going to graduate. the cause of that crash is still under investigation. happening today, mill valley school leaders will face some difficult questions as the district tries to balance its budget. the district recently announced a deficit of more than $7 million, according to the marin ij. one idea now on the table includes cutting the city's universal transitional kindergarten, which trustees say is underfunded. opponents plan to attend tonight's trustees

meeting, which takes place at mill valley middle school. no final decisions are expected until march. we continue to follow the latest on the wildfires out of southern california. conditions are improving for the first responders, with the santa ana winds finally dying down. red flag warnings expired last night. the palisades fire is now 21% contained. the flames burning nearly 24,000 acres so far. meanwhile, crews are also gaining ground when it comes to the eaton fire in altadena. the flames there, scorching 14,000 acres with 45% containment. the fires have killed 25 people and destroyed more than 12,300 structures. meteorologist kari hall of course, tracking the forecastst in that area again fr us this morning. and, kari, how are things looking? yeah, there's still a red flag warning in effect for the western san gabriel mountains, not too far from the eaton fire. that continues until 3:00 today, and we are expecting much improving conditions as we are seeing the
5:09 am
wind calming down. still a little breezy in some parts of socal and we're seeing in the mountains. winds are up to about 25mph, and the humidity is the other factor in that that's been critically low. we're going to see a surge in moisture over the next few days, and that's going to help reduce that fire danger as well as the calming winds. so really good news there that we are seeing some higher humidity this morning. we are seeing humidity that's still very low. and it can also be one of the factors that leads these fires to spread more rapidly. we're down to 9%elative humidity as we go into the afternoon. but look at what happens tomorrow morning. it's been quite a while since we've seen the humidity coming up to close to 100%, so hopefully that will allow some of those fires to continue to smolder and then eventually die out, especially with the fire fights that we've seen and trying to get some more containment. so it looks like much better news here as we go into the weekend with higher
5:10 am
humidi and lighter wind. and we'll talk about what we're expecting here in the bay area. coming up. mike's been trying to save you some money on gas trying. i mean, right off the top i'm going to point to north star gas in san jose. 357 that's the best in santa clara county. contra costa county comes up next to san ramon. 359 at freedom gas on acosta boulevard. much higher, though, in marin county, which tends to be the case there. often times we have 387 as the low for san rafael at elite gas and mart on ritter street. you check your air, you see the changes that might have occurredasbuddy.com as you adjust. we'll look over here toward the roadways and see the speed sensors are still in the green zone for most of the bay top more green. we have eastbound 37. it did reopen right on schedule, just a couple of seconds after 5 a.m. so we're looking at good sensors into and out of vallejo right now. we'll see a little slowing develop over the next ten minutes in the westbound commute direction, likely over here. no direction is slow for oakland. you're at speed. back to you. thanks, mike. 510 right now, reducing your food waste ahead. at 525,

i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah. i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire

right now at 513, we are taking a live look outside in san jose. nice quiet, clear start and cool temperatures too. we are going to be in the low 40s through 8:00 and then quickly warming up as we head for upper 60s again today. this weather repeats that we've seen throughout the past few days, but it will be a little bit cooler for the weekend. we'll talk about the changes coming up in the full microclimate fororecast a changes right now on the golden gate bridge. notice the lights are. oh, we just have one that's restored in the southbound direction. things are held up coming out of the waldo tunnel there. we're looking at robin williams tunnel, i should say. traditionally, they clear the commute. the construction going on right there. we'll make sure that traffic is restored out of

marin county into san francisco. coming up. well, good morning. very happy thursday to you. you know, it was a happy day wednesday on wall street as well. core inflation showed in core inflation. data showed inflation slowing. so the markets had their biggest rally since the election. cnbc says tesla is going to discount the price of its cybertruck. netflix upgraded ahead of its profit valley got a lot of attention in president biden's farewell address last night. not the good kind. the president made an explicit warning about the power of tech moguls and tech companies, drawing parallels to president eisenhower's warning about the military industrial complex delivered during his farewell address 60 years ago. six decades later, i'm equally concerned about the potential rise of a tech industrial complex that could pose real dangers for our country as well.
5:16 am
americans are being buried under an avalanche of misinformation and disinformation, enabling the abuse of power. president biden also warned about a new oligarchy. we'll talk more about that in politics. but yeah, the power of tech and tech ceosnd tech investors on the rise, with promises of fewer regulations ahead in the trump administration, may be less opposition to mergers as well. business insider says google's ceo is attending the inauguration. apple's tim cook, mark zuckerberg, jeff bezos elon musk all invited. the new york times says the ceo of tiktok is going to the inauguration as well. you remember erik shoji chu from these congressional hearings? what congress, of course, voted overwhelmingly to set a ban on tiktok for this sunday, three days from now. but all of a sudden, it seems like the least popular idea in washington. three senior officials at the white hou say president biden
5:17 am
is working on a way to delay sunday's deadline so that the enforcement would push to trump's administration. trump becomes president on monday, and he's indicated he's against the ban as well. he's a big fan. the president is now on tiktok. it's my honor. no tax on tips, by the way. no tax on tips. tick tock tick. i'm going to save tiktok. sounds like he really may save tiktok. now the president doesn't have that power alone, though he can decide that it's not a security threat, which would remove it from the general law. but i think trump's just going to convince republican house, republican senate to just withdraw it. be interesting to see. yeah it will. thanks, scott. well, trending this morning, many people have tuned in to the famous show on nbc with that iconic line live from new york. it's saturday night. well, there's a new. there was nothing like it. wild and crazy guy in a van down by the river. it's an american institution. so
5:18 am
there's a new documentary series. takes us behind the scenes of saturday night live 50 season, and it premieres today. we actually got a chance to chat with morgan neville. he's the academy award winning director of 20ft from stardom and executive director of that new series. morgan shared his vision he had for that project. when snl creator asked him to take lead. and i said, you know, rather than doing a documentary or doing a kind of like history of, i said i'd rather as a comedy fan, what i want to see are deep dives into how the show works. so we did an episode about auditioning for the show, an episode about writing the show, an entire episode about the cowbell sketch, and then an episode about season 11, which we call the weird years. some people refer to as the worst year ever, but it was the year that actually made snl what it is. all four episodes of snl 50 behind saturday night live are now available on streaming service peacock. okay, we need
5:19 am
more cowbell. yeah, always. always. that's for sure. apparently they needed to revisit season 11 as well. yes, sir. they did. all right, let's get a look at revisiting that forecast for us, which this week here at home has been really nice. yeah. an afternoon every single day. same thing. cold morning warm afternoon. and we have had a really good opportunity to get outside and enjoy the sunshine and some warmer than normal temperatures. but take a look at what we're starting with the frost advisory once again, in effect, for a lot of the inland valleys and parts of the north bay, east bay, as well as the south bay. this will be in effect for these areas shaded in blue until 9:00, where our temperatures areot even just frosty, but below freezing in some spots. we're down to 31 degrees in danville this morning, so it may go down a few more degrees before sunrise. we're at 38 in pleasanton and 42 in san jose. napa is at 38. while in santa rosa. we're at 36 degrees rht now. and then when we compare our high temperatures
5:20 am
and what we're expecting today versus average, a lot of spots are about seven, eight and maybe even nine degrees above normal. so we are well above what we typically see as our high temperatures in gilroy today. top out at 71 degrees. that is very warm for the middle of january, and we're up to 64 in concord as well as oakland and 66 degrees in fremont and in the peninsula near the coast. we're in the low to mid 60s for today, and san francisco up to 65, in the mission district for the north bay, 64 in sonoma and santa rosa, and 66 in ukiah. we've been talking about how dry it is, how we haven't had any rain since january 3rd. and still, as we're running the models out all throughout next week, it looks very dry all the way up to next saturday. that's when we may finally get some rain in here, which will be desperately needed at that point because we if we end the month without any rainfall, it will be the third driest on record. we
5:21 am
don't want that record. we want to get some rainfall in here during our what's usually a wetter month, but we see the sunshine continue through the weekend into the middle of next week. it's a long holiday weekend for a lot of people and the weather stays pleasant. will be cool in the morning with some lows in the upper 30s in the inland valleys. highs in the 60s. and for san francisco, today is the last day of seeing those 60s for a while. a lot of 50s in the forecast into next tuesday. mike, you're tracking the traffic out of marin county and we expected to see this right on schedule. we have all these headlights that were held up on the marin side as they cleared the southbound crew. this will be a big burst of traffic, which you see right now. in the next five minutes or so, things will start to thin out. coming out of the robin williams tunnel across the span into san francisco. exactly what we expect to see. good news traveling into the city. no more slowing on the north side of the bridge, approaching from san francisco. there will be some crews clearing from the presidio area, so just know that folks do. we also know right here, right on schedule. westbound 37
5:22 am
break taps out of vallejo across toward mare island, right on schedule, checking highway four. there's a little break tap going on here. we'll watch for any early slowing in concord. shouldn't be too severe, but we are looking at the build for the contra costa county drive coming down out of contra costa county. vasco road still at speed. altamont looking pretty good. so these travel times are great right now. vasco road from marsh creek down to 580. only 18 minutes and clear skies for visibility. back to you. looks good. thanks, mike. 521 right now falling short on reducing food waste. still ahead this morning. the reason scientists believe you won't be making your yearly goa and the tips you need to implement in order to help your daily life reduce waste. and a reminder the nfl playoffs are now underway. the niners aren't in it this year, but cheer on others like the l.a. rams. philadelphia eagles. kickoff starts at 11:00 this sunday morning right here on nbc bay area. we'll be right back.

keep food out of landfills, scientists say it also has environmental downsides because of resources needed to grow, process and distribute food. the problem with with that is that we're not addressing kind of upstream food waste. we're not thinking about the causes of that food waste. we're not thinking about preventing that food waste. and so we need to be thinking more as a nation and in california as well, about stopping food waste from happening in the first place. so what can we do at home, especially as the new year kicks off and we think more about food, we can be more creative with the leftovers. or that spinach wilting in the fridge. sticking to our grocery list is a good way, and understanding best buy labels and expiration dates can help you keep the food around longer. if you're a business owner, try donating more food to help fight food waste. you can read the full study and learn more about clate solutions on our website, nbcbayarea.com. click

thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's start with a look at that forecast for you this morning. meteorologist kari hall tracking what we can expect outside. another cold one? yes, but it will shape up to be a nice afternoon once again. so we have to make it through the next few hours with these cold temperatures. and for some of us, we are near or even below freezing in the inland valleys. and a lot of sunshine throughout the day helps us warm up. so we will have a weekend with a few more clouds and slightly cooler temperatures, and the wind may pick up as well. by next week. it may be blowing offshore, which has its own concerns with lower humidity. a live look outside in dublin this morning looks good, but we are just 1 degrees above freezing. mike, i feel it. we're looking over here. we're looking over here at some typal slowing for highway four and 37. but look here folks in berkeley, let's zoom in there on the map. we're looking at westbound 80, your commute direction at university, right near the overcrossing. reports of a crash took a little while for them to clear the lanes and get over to the right shoulder, but they have, according to chp,

senseless. it was this past sunday night around 830. there was what has been described as a gun battle in vallejo's crest neighborhood, a two party shooting at each other. a mother and a young daughter happened to be driving by when one of the bullets hit this young girl who was in the car. her mother raced her child to the hospital where the daughter, according to our last report, remains in critical condition. one of the bullets pierced through the wall of a famimily's home in that neighborhood and almost hit an eight year old boy who was sitting on the sofa at the time. here's that boy's mother. it was a really close call, and i still haven't, like, gathered my thoughts completely. if these kids need to shoot, then they can go down to the local recruiter and we can get them a job in afghanistan. and they can shoot all day. a bullet also hit mario bernal's truck, which was parked outside his home. he says this neighborhood has gotten so dangerous. he keeps his kids

whenever an emergency response is critical. in in particular in these disaster situations where decisions have to be made, processes have to be adhered to, you know, safety becomes paramount. all of those things are second nature for these military veterans. so it gives them an opportunity to use those skills again in augmenting our volunteer force, which includes, you know, civilians from all walks of life in. well, last year, team rubicon participated in several dozen emergency response situations across california, including some in the bay area. you can find resources to help victims of the southern california wildfire and develop an emergency plan for your family at nbcbayarea.com. we're also posting updates on the wildfires and the continuous investigations that are underway. 539 right now, back here at home in the bay area, taking a live look over in downtown san jose. nice and clear for us this morning. but

around and check out what they're doing out there. celebrating the city as well as the sea lions. if you're hitting the road this weekend, maybe going to lake tahoe, you can expect highs in the 40s and low 50s and overnight lows down into the teens. well, mike, now you're seeing a slow zone showing up in san jose, right? which shouldn't be a surprise to most folks driving through the south bay. you know, this is the first burst of traffic and it's a lighter today. we typically see this and it will ease up over the next 15 minutes or so, continue to follow any incidents for the south bay. none for the peninsula. east bay, a nice easy drive. maybe something new out of the altamont pass. we'll check on chp latest information once we get back to the traffic center. a note as we look ahead. eastbound 84 continues with a daytime closure for some repair work going on as you're heading out of skyline and toward woodside, and eventually toward 280. so keep that in md. again, that's for the daylight hours. and then overnight we're going to stop service early 930 as we have all week for fix it week. they're working on those
5:42 am
tunnels for the subway, the muni subway between embarcadero and west portal shut down early between 930 all night, including friday night. that will also have an early slowdown. i'm sorry, an early shutdown for the subways. the busses still work. there's still some slowing. westbound 80 into berkeley. the crash at university reported on the shoulder. chp has yet to arrive on scene, but we do see slowing as you come off that richmond bridge. back to you. thank you. 541 right now, a cemetery mystery still ahead re on today in the bay, the large scale theft, authorities say happened right under the eyes of workers. plus, raising an alarm about lower vaccination rates. the potential risk. health leaders say, may result from more people skipping the shots needed. i'm kris sanchez in san jose, one of the places where thousands of nurses will be protesting, trying to draw attention to their cause. i'll tell you wha that causet, i

is day morning. we are checking out palo alto and highway 101. as you're stepping out the door. it is another cold one. we're down to 39 degrees and we may see another dip or a degree or two before sunrise, and then the rest of the day. it will be a cool start, but a nice and warm afternoon. we will have cooler weather for the weekend. we'll take a look at that coming up in a few minutes, and we are taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights are
5:46 am
not yet activated, according to the chp report. we see a little volume increase, but we don't see a backup here. and no problem on the live camera showing the span. we'll see how things develop over the next few. we'll keep checking on the bill. thanks so much. kari mike. 5:45. right now, thousands of registered nurses are protesting outside california hospitals to draw attention to contract talks, patient care, and the use of artificial intelligence today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us from good samaritan hospital in san jose. and, chris, this is not the only hospital where we're going to see any of that activity today. no. and we expect we are going to see some of these protests from san jose up to san francisco to oakland, walnut creek, vallejo, these nurses really trying to draw attention to the contract talks that lay ahead. good samaritan is just one of the hospitals, and according to the union, they will be bargaining for a new contract in 2024. and some of what they're asking for, they say, will impact patient safety. they will be joined by nurses outside kaiser permanente
5:47 am
facilities, uc healthcare, sutter health facilities, and as i mentioned, oakland, san francisco, walnut creek and vallejo. and that's just today. now, california nurses association want to draw attention to the nurse to patient ratios. what they say is a lack of workplace violence prevention plans and the policies to address the use of artificial intelligence. they do say that some of these policies that either are in place or are lacking, are keeping qualified nurses away from patients bedsides. they just don't feel safe at work, or they just don't feel like, you know, they are getting a good opportunity to take care of their patients in a good way, ratio wise. so they are going to be showing up here outside this hospital. good samaritan hospital in san jose at 8:00.0.e have reached out to good samaritan. we have reached out to kaiser permanente for comment. we haven't yet heard back. we know it's early. so it's not that they don't want to talk at this point. we'll keep checking back with them in san

jose. kris sanchez today in the bay. i'm sure things will get active maybe a little later. all right. thanks, chris. well, one of two drivers in a street racing crash which killed a peninsula couple back in 2022, will be sentenced in juvenile court today. in november, a judge found him guilty. vehicular manslaughter and unlawful speed contest. he was not convicted on a murder charge. cameras had showed the now 19 year old car plowing into another car on el camino real, sadly killing the mother and father of twin daughters. the girls survived in the back seat. the other driver, kyle harrison, is now expected to be sentenced next month after pleading no contest. police in lafayette are investigating a brazen and rather heartless crime. someone stole more than 200 bronze vases from oakmont memorial park cemetery. now, investigators say that the vases helped decorate various grave sites where they were placed there by mourners. now, on top of that, someone
5:49 am
also vandalized a memorial bench. it took a while for those staff members to piece things together. investigators say they're still not sure exactly when the theft occurred. anyone with information should call contra costa county sheriff's office. and that is going to come back to literally haunt them. well, san jose police want to know exactly how their real time intelligence center gathers information. later today, they're hosting a virtual webinar to shed some light on how they intend to use a network of more than 1000 cameras now surveying the city, the city's department of transportation and parking control actually operates those cameras as part of an even larger network. today's meeting will get underway at 6 p.m. medical professionals are raising the alarm on recent data, which shows vaccination rates are dropping, particularly among children. the cdc reports vaccine exemptions among kindergartners hit an all time high this school year, with coverage declining to less than
5:50 am
93%. that is lower than the reported 95% during the 2019 2020 school year. the partnership to fight infectious diseases, which is made up of doctors, community groups and health policy experts, is advocating for families to get their kids vaccinated. doctors are worried that fewer vaccinations will mean we lose protections against preventable diseases like measles. from 2023 to 2024, the number of measles cases in this country or outbreaks quadrupled. we went from four outbreaks to 16. i don't know what 2025 is going to look like, but it's a trend that is really taking us farther away from being as healthy as possible, and from protecting ourselves and assuring that we can still say vaccines save lives. and i, i celebrate that my children and my families have taken advantage of them. that's doctor jewell mullin, who says
5:51 am
parents should talk with their family doctor and have confidence that current vaccines have been researched and are effective for everything from measles to the flu. well, with football now winding down, we all know what that means. football winding up. get ready quakes fans, because major league soccer season is just getting started. san jose earthquakes regular season kicks off february 22nd. between now and then, the team will actually have five weeks of training camp and play several preseason games. head coach and former national team coach bruce arenas is actually calling it a new era and hopefully a new level of excitement. the immediate goal this year is to be a better team than we were in 2024, and i think we can accomplish that for sure. hopefully we can have a good year and we can help the team for the winning. the former mls mvp josef martinez, one of

two high profile players in the team that acquired this, is in the offseason along with christian chino arango. both should add offensive firepower. the team opens at home against salt lake city. training this morning. a 1 in 1,000,000 dream come true for fans of a trailblazing r&b superstar. and. your love is 1 in 1,000,000. it goes on and on and on. you. mattel today releasing a new aaliyah barbie on what would have been her 46th birthday. if you don't already have one. well, sadly too late. the company says they're already sold out. your outfit was inspired with the look worn in her 1 in 1,000,000 video you just saw there. some of those fans will argue aaliyah's effortless, cool it girl 90s style is emulated to this day by many young artists. very true.

so here's what you missed, basically, all right. well, it's you know, it's so i don't know if i would say surprising because i think she's very talented, but the fact that, you know, she died more than 20 years ago and her legacy still lives on. i mean, and her care. you know, think of her lifespan was very short. yeah. that's often what happens right after some young artist dies. in many mediums, people say what could have been. and that's why we live on. you never know. yeah. okay. well, you couldn't wear that little skimpy outfit, thoughtoday. it's a little early in the morning. it is a cold start once again. we've been talking about freezing temperatures and frost advisories. that continues again today. and i think the next several days we'll see more cold mornings to start. so we're just getting used to this pattern where we are down to 33 degrees in sonoma right now it's 46 in san francisco, los altos at 40 degrees and 38 in pleasanton. but we've once again made it down below freezing in danville. and it's in the mid 30s for the

south county. just in is our drought monitor. here's the update. we're still seeing widespread drought across the west and across actually much of the country, including parts of the northern mountain states. and for the west coast, we are seeing the drought continuing as well as for southern california. no surprise that we've seen a 15% increase in severe drought for these areas shaded in orange, where, of course, we've been dealing with the very dry conditions. they haven't had any measurable rain for months now, and it looks like it's still going to be very dry. now, the relative humidity is another factor in that in drying out the vegetation even more, as we've also been getting those gusty winds. and today the relative humidity and that fire danger is still going to be down to the teens, which is critically low. but look at what happens tomorrow. if it's not going to rain, at least we are going to see a surge in the relative humidity and the fog returning
5:55 am
for some of those areas across southern california. so that's good news, not only for the fire fight, but also the humidity in the air. now, looking at the sierra snow pack with the update of the drought monitor as well, there is such a huge disparity from north to south. the northern sierra is at 125% of the normal snow pack, while the southern sierra is only at 56% of normal. as we take a look at what to expect above normal temperatures into the upper 60s and low 70s, today we're going to see some cooler temperatures coming in and still no rain in the forecast through much of next week. so our dry weather continues. it's also going to be a long holiday weekend. if you're off on monday, look for temperatures starting out in the upper 30s, highs in the low 60s, and more of that into the middle of next week. san francisco this is your last day of seeing those 60s for the next several days. mike, you're tracking one east bay trouble spot. yeah, we have east bay slow spots, which we
5:56 am
expect on the upper east shore freeway, then coming down into richmond and things bogged down, but it looks like we may be recovering for west 80. remembe, the earlier crash was in lanes at university and made its way to the shoulder. chp arrived, there was more slowing. it looks like the speed sensors are starting to smooth out. as you ripple past that. more traffic will head past university and the crash on the shoulder, getting toward the bay bridge, where the metering lights up until a few seconds ago. not registered on yet, but we do see slowing approaching the toll plaza and we see some slowing on the sensors getting up the incline and into san francisco, so they should be turned on in a second. lighter traffic around the rest of the bay. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, happening now. vacaville police dog is recovering this morning after being shot in the line of duty. the canine, named murph, was part of a police response yesterday to reports of a gunman threatening to harm himself and others. police say that murph was shot in the leg while attempting to subdue the man who officers arrested. that suspect, now facing multiple felony charges. and our hero
