11:01 am
right now at 11, searching for answers after a shooting seriously injures a young girl in vallejo who was caught in the gunfire. the update were moments away from hearing. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. well, happening now. the city of vallejo moments away from holding a news conference to talk about this weekend's shooting that left a young girl in critical condition. nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live from the neighborhood where this happened. and, bob, look, any shooting is just a tragic situation, but the child was just so young. a toddler, according to vallejo police. i just spoke to vallejo deputy chief who is telling us this toddler, fortunately, is in stable condition. last report critical condition, but is now in stable condition and this young child is expected to survive. we're in a strip mall in the crest neighborhood here
11:02 am
in vallejo, about a block or two away from where the shooting took place. and this morning we're waiting for this news conference to start here. this news conference is actually organized by californians for safety and justice. they're a nonprofit that advocates for public safety, safety neighborhoods, safer neighborhoods on behalf of crime survivors. so they're going to be out here along with the supervisor from solano county, the mayor of vallejo. if you pan to the right, you can see the city and the county people over there underneath the awning. and they are also speaking vallejo police. i did as i mentioned, i spoke with vallejo police. i asked him they have not made any arrests, and i asked them, what kind of information are you going to put out there today to try to help people find the person or persons responsible? and they said all they're doing is they're asking if you heard anything or saw anything that you can call a tip line or even an anonymous tip line. but as far as any suspect info, vehicle info, that is not something they are putting out. again, they're trying to find the person or persons responsible for this crime that they say is sad and
11:03 am
senseless and. someone did that. that's video from a home surveillance camera that captured some of the gunshots this past sunday night at around 830, there was what has been described as a gun battle again in vallejo's crest neighborhood, about a block or two away from where we're at right now. there were two parties shooting at each other a mother and her young daughter. they happened to be driving by when one of the bullets hit the young girl, who's been described as a toddler. they're not sure if she's at the age of two or 3 or 4, but she definitely young. her mother raced her to the hospital where she was in critical condition. now, again, the latest information from police is that she's in stable condition is expected to survive. one of the bullets pierced through a wall of a family's home in this neighborhood, and almost hit an eight year old boy who was sitting on a sofa. now back out here live. as i mentioned, we are waiting for this press conference to start. that's a live look at the pressers, thehe poum where we're expecting
11:04 am
again, the vallejo police chief is out here. i think the mayor of vallejo, supervisor from solano county. and again, that organization, californians for safety and justice, not only do they want to get the word out about this crime to find whoever did this, but they also want to start a conversation on how to stop this kind of crime from happening, to get the kind of resources into neighborhoods like this to make them safer for people to live. reporting live here in vallejo. bob redell, nbc, bay area news. all right. thank you very much, bob. we are following breaking news out of the peninsula, where tens of thousands of pg&e customers and foster city and san mateo are in the dark. take a look at this outage map. nearly 36,000 customers lost power around 830 this morning. it's now at about 27,000. pg&e says power is expected back by early this afternoon. it's thought to be caused by an equipment issue. the police department is telling people not to call them, to
11:05 am
inform them they know the power is out. police are also telling outages as four way stops.ght happening today, registered nurses are taking a day of action protesting outside numerous health care facilities and hospitals. thousands are trying to draw attention to the issues they say impacts not only themselves, but potentially your care. nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us live from good samaritan hospital in san jose with a look at the activity that's happening there. chris, good morning to you, laura. so good samaritan hospitals contract with its registered nurses expires in july. so there is a little extra urgency for the nurses who were out here this morning trying to get this message out. they were protesting outside the hospital here in san jose. and they're among the thousands who spent some of their morning on the picket lines outside in the cold. in the spring, these nurses will bargain for a new contract this year, and some of what they want are working conditions that would benefit patient safety. w we did reach t
11:06 am
to good samaritan hospital. they say that their staffing remains safe and appropriate, and that they are implementing technologies that will allow work caregivers to spend more time with their patients through bettering workflow. now at issue for the california nurses association is that nurse to patient ratio. that's so important for so many patients. a lack of workplace violence prevention plans and policies to address the use of artificial intelligence, things that the union says can keep or drive nurses from patient bedsides. we can't eat in the patient areas. we're not sitting down at a desk based on osha laws. we can't just sit down and eat while we're charting. so we do need that time away. and we're also making decisions for five patients care at the same time, nurses who continually feel like they have moral distress and are unable to provide safe patient care, they eventually quit. it's just unsafe at times. our kaiser
11:07 am
permanente statement reads in part, we are not in contract bargaining with cna and in fact reached an agreement on a generous four year contract with cna in 2022 that provides our nurses with competitive wages, excellent benefits, valuable professional opportunities and a work environment committed to their well-being and safety. nurses also protested outside of uc health and sutter health facilities in san jose, oakland, san francisco, vallejo and walnut creek. protests only lasted about an hour, but the nurses are hoping that's enoug to get the attention of the hospitals and of the patients who could potentially exert some sort of pressure in san jose. kris sanchez, nbc, bay area news. all right. thank you, chris. well, happening now vallejo city leaders addressing the shooting that happened with a four year old was shot over the weekend. let's listen in reputation that it really deserves. it's a beautiful community with people who have lived here for generations. people who are first time
11:08 am
homeowners, people who a are frm other places like myself, who fell in love with this community and decided to call it home. nobody has. nobody derves to worry about whether or not they're going to get hit by a bullet. no child has to deserve to go outside and wonder whether or not it's going to be safe for them to play. that i incident hs left myself and many other residents of the neighborhood rattled. we have to worry about our safety. we have to worry about our children. we have to worry about our neighbors. and we are here today to say that while it is unacceptable, vallejo has to do something to improve public safety. i'm grateful to the folks who are standing behind me who are also doing that work. and while we work on holding people accountable when things like this happen, we also have to scale up the things that prevent it from happening in the first place. so i want to appreciate the girls and boys empowerment, dove many of the programs that are here in the community, they're doing that work on the ground. the new form, the newly formed violence prevention network that's also doing that
11:09 am
work on the ground. and we're here also to call for more resources, whether it's for trauma recovery, whether it's for prevention programs, reentry programs, things that we know actually prevent this type of violence from happening in the first place. you'll hear more about that as the folks behind me come up. but i just want to say that as a resident of this community, i take it personally the responsibility to step in with my community to make sure that this never happens again, that we all feel safe in our homes, and that we continue to work together to make the reputation of this community what it really deserves to be a beautiful community that a lot of us call home. i'm going to step aside and invite up a leader who is also a resident in this community. that's solano county district one supervisor cassandra james. all right. we will continue to. what is to listen in on this live news conference that's happening in vallejo right now. big concern is this shooting that has left a young girl severely injured. well, in southern california, conditions are said to be improving for firefighters on the front line of the l.a.
11:10 am
county wildfires. the number of confirmed deaths still stands at 25, with more than 12,000 structures destroyed. the cause of the two largest fires still under investigation. in a new update this morning, the palisades fire is now said to be 22% contained. the eaton fire in altadena is now more than half contained. and of course, those fires continue to burn. weather there is still a big factor. absolutely. and it's just so dry right now. but the good thing is that the wind is calming down and we have higher humidity ahead, and there is only a few more hours of the critically low humidity. and this red flag warning that continues for the western san gabriel mountains, not too far from where the eaton fireccurred. so we're still watching those conditions with some good news ahead as we see some surge of some mid level moisture coming in, the shades of green there, showing that surge of humidity, which helps slow the spread of any fires. so we're expecting that to really
11:11 am
turn around here with some much better conditions even early tomorrow morning. the relative humidity will be close to 100%. so hopefully more containment as we're getting some very light winds. now, as we approach our afternoon, we'll be watching it. we'll talk about the bay area forecast coming up in a few minutes. all right. thanks, gary. well, happening today, oakland leadeders will answer questions about a recent closure of two fire stations in oakland hills. both are now closed through june. critics say that it's already led to a delayed response during a house fire early yesterday. station 28 near lake chabot and station 25 near closed to help offset a massive budget deficit. tonight's virtual town hall will start at 6:00, includes public input, another candidate is entering the race for oakland mayor lauren taylor. former mayor sheng thao narrowly beat him back in 2022, and less than 30 minutes ago, he filed to run for
11:12 am
mayor of oakland at the city hall there. taylor is a third generation oakland native, a businessman and a former council member. he's running against former councilwoman barbara lee. she represented oakland for nearly 30 years. she was a congresswoman. allll right. wel, this midday, there are questions surrounding an east bay council member after his home was raided by the fbi. still ahead, we have new details being released about what went down, and it's turning out to be one of the least popular ideas in washington. banning tiktok. the effort to save it coming up. and a reminder nfl playoffs now underway. we know the niners aren't in, but maybe you can cheer on another team. how about the la rams philadelphia eagles? kickoff starts at 11:00 this sunday morning right here on

and hearings continue on capitol hill and scott mcgrew. today marks the second day of the hearing for attorney general candidate pam bondi. yeah. that's right. good morning. we also have hearings marks for doug burgum, the secretary of the interior, or intended to be lee zeldin for environmental protection agency, scott turner for housing and urban development, scott bessent for treasury. we're watching all of them. a panel of fellow lawyers are offering themselves as character witnesses in the bondi hearing. bondi yourself answered questions before the senate judiciary committee yesterday. one of the witnesses offering his support to bondi this morning was dave aronberg, who ran for florida state attorney general as a democrat. she ran as a republican. she won, he lost. and then she hired him to be a drug czar. she offffered me this position because she knew from the campaign that fighting the opioid epidemic had been my career priority and an important part of my campaign platform. it did not matter that i had a d

him and his campaign to get his america first message out, but at the same time, he wants to protect their data. you know, conservatives don't want the fbi, and they certainly don't want the chinese communists getting their passwords, getting their data, and being able to overly influence the american people. this is such a fascinating story. six months ago, this was the biggest priority in the world was to protect americans from tiktok. and now one of the biggest priorities appears to be letting them keep using tiktok. yeah, it's been very useful, at least in those political campaigns. yes, i think that's part of it. all right. thank you. well, some sad news to report today. beloved milwaukee brewers broadcaster bob uecker has died. uecker, also known as mr. baseball, was a voice of the team for 54 years. he also played for the saint louis cardinals, philadelphia phillies and atlanta braves. he was a hall of famer before his professional baseball career ended in 1967. he turned to life behind the mic after with his comedic timing. he also turned to acting, appearing in the 1989

movie major league and the film's two sequels. according to his family, he faced a private battle with small cell lung cancer since early 2023. bob uecker was 90 years old. well, just into our newsroom this midday. master filmmaker david lynch has also died. he is known for his surreal works like elephant man, blue velvet and mulholland drive. he was a director. he was also the creator of the hit tv drama twin peaks. lynch's family confirmed his death in a post on his official facebook page. david lynch was 78 years old. and east bay council members commenting on a raid to his home by fbi agents. the fbi, meanwhile, will only confirm to nbc bay area that agents yesterday acted on a search warrant at the home of san leandro council member brian zito, who recently won reelection. the chronicle, reporting that zito has ties to a powerful east bay family also connected to former oakland mayor sheng thao, who is still

under investigation in a federal corporate corruption probe but has not been charged. happening today, mill valley school leaders will face some difficult questions as the district tries to rebalance its budget. the district recently announced a deficit of more than $7 million, according to the marin ij. one idea now on the table includes cutting the city's universal transitional kindergarten, which trustees say is underfued. opponents plan to attend tonight's trustees meeting, which takes place at mill valley middle school. no final decisions are expected before march. all right, take four. another beautiful afternoon across the bay area. yeah, it has been a really nice week. even though it started out so chilly this morning. we're starting to climb out of that very deep hole. we started this morning with temperatures below freezing and some of our inland valleys or very close. and now we're in the mid 50s, so it's still jacket weather.. but that sunshine really helps out. and we're headed for the mid to upper 60s for today, a high of
11:20 am
66 degrees in hayward and palo alto and 68 degrees in san jose will be in the mid 60s for the east bay, as well as much of the north bay. tomorrow you'll notice it will be cooler and most of us will stay in the 50s even throughout the afternoon. and that's the weather that we'll see continue throughout the weekend with a few more clouds, some breezy winds. but this is actually closer to what's normal for this time of year. and checking in on the drought monitor that was updated this morning, we are still seeing some widespread drought conditions all across the country. and where you see the red, that's extreme drought. severe drought is now expanding. no surprise across southern california. it's been so many months since they've had a significant rain, and we are now going from seeing the lighter shades of orange, which is a moderate drought, to a darker shade of orange, which is a severe drought. and that increase across the state was up by about 15% compared to last
11:21 am
week. and we're also seeing quite a bit of our sierra snowpack melting, mainly in the southern sierra, where we're only at about half of the normal amounts compared to normal. but the northern sierra is still doing pretty well at 125% of normal. so as we go through the next week, it's still going to be dry. this high pressure has been so stubborn, and keeping any storms from moving into the bay area, but we may finally start to see a change in this pattern by the end of next week. so next weekend will be watching out. and of course, as we get closer, we'll keep you up to date. but in the near term it is nothing but sunshine here and temperatures just slightly cooler going into the weekend into the long holiday weekend for a lot of people with highs in for the middle of next week. mostly sunny, but those mornings starting out chilly with some mid to upper 30s and san francisco will be in the low 60s today once the clouds move in and this weak cold front moves in for the weekend, we will see
11:22 am
that drop in the temperatures with highs in the mid 50s throughout most of the weekend into early next week and mornin, starting out in the lower 40s. and now as we turn to our climate in crisis, california is falling short on federal food waste reduction goals, uc davis researchers say. based on current food waste generated, it's likely that none of the 50 states will meet the federal goal of cutting food waste by the year 2030. while composting has become a popular solution to keep food out of the landfill, scientists say it also has environmental downsides because of the resources needed to grow, process and distribute food. the problem with with that is that we're not addressing kind of upstream food waste. we're not thinking about the causes of that food waste. we're not thinking about preventing that food waste. and so we need to be thinking more as a nation and in california as well, about
11:23 am
stopping food waste from happening in the first place, she says, here's what you can do at home, especially as the new year kicks off and we think about more food, more about food, so we can be more creative with the leftovers, or the spinach wilting in the fridge and sticking to our grocery list. this is also a good way, and understanding the best buy labels and expiration dates can help you keep food around longer. and if you're a business owner, try donating extra food to help fight food waste, and you can read the full story and the study on our website and learn about solutions to our climate crisis on our website, nbcbayarea.com and click on the climate and crisis tab. good information there, kerry. thank you. well, happening now san jose san jose police want people to know exactly how they're real time. intelligence center gathers information. they're hosting a virtual webinar tonight. it's going to shed some light on how they intend to use the network of more than a thousand cameras now surveying
