stars and surprises. >> my favorite part of the whole thing ng i watch that more than the game. it's a cliche. >> we are who we are. we are going to begin this hour though with the status of the ceasefire agreement between israel and hamas. >> after striking a deal to pause fighting and release dozens of hostages, israel is pushing a vote to approve that peace deal to friday morning. it comes after reported disputes between the two sides today. the israeli government has accused hamas of making new demands. hamas says it is committed to this deal. the holdup fueled fears of further delays in implementing the agreement. a short time ago white house national security council spokesman john kirby said the biden administration is certain the deal will get done. >> we fully expect and we are confident we will get it in place by sunday. >> meanwhile, amid some celebrations in gaza following wednesday's announcement, the fighting did continue. a new round of israeli airstrikes killed dozens over the past 24 hours. that's according to the

hamas-run health ministry there. joining us now meagan fitzgegerald. she has been tracking this. we know there has been a lot of back and forth within the last 24 hours. so where do things stand right now? >> reporter: well, look, you know, according to the white house, john kirby certainly one them, the deal will be signed and implemented sunday. sir by and secretary blinken say they are confident that this will be the case and the loose ends that they are seeing now will be tied up. israel has accused hamas of reneging on aspects of the deal which caused the security cabinet meeting that was scheduled for today to now be rescheduled for tomorrow morning. a senior israeli official tells us that a vote, again, is expected tomorrow morning. that is something we will be watching closely. but we are told that the holdup was due to new demands by hamas, including palestinian prisoners with israel saying hamas added demands that contradict the agreement that they made with mediators. but as far as this deal is

concerned, it will take place in three phases with phase one taking 42 days. the deal includes the release of hostages. the release of some palestinian prisoners, a withdrawal from israel -- withdrawal of israeli forces and of course plans on how to rebuild gaza. guys. >> and meagan, it's been 24 hours since this was announced. what are we learning about the hostages themselves who might be released in the first phase you talked about? >> reporter: well, the stage one of this deal will be release of 33 of these hostages over the course of six weeks. according to a senior u.s. official, we know that sagui dekel-chen and seethe siegel, american citizens, expected to be released in the first phase. both are believed -- permanent end to hostilities for remaining israeli hostages. of course, the final stage, stage three, the remains of the

remaining hostages who died will be returned back to israel and again the reconstruction of gaza, the talks around that will begin. so again, guys, we will be watching closely tomorrow as the israeli security cabinet prepares to vote on this deal with the hopes we will see this peace deal implemented as early as sunday. >> thank you. meagan fitzgerald, thank you. here in the u.s., firefighters in southern california are getting a much needed break in the weather today. >> winds have finally eased up. the betterness can are helping crews bet the upper hand on containing the palisades and eaton fires. two new deaths from the wildfires were reported today bringing the number of dead to at least 27. nbc news correspondent ellison barber is in pasadena for us. the winds may have let up, but landslides are now going to become a concern. what are local officials saying about that? >> reporter: yeah, still just a host of concerns. the big thing we heard from fire officials today was the wind

event was not as bad as expected and that was a huge relief. but also that people aren't out of the woods yet because of things like landslides and also the possibility for winds to pick up on monday and tuesday. they are wanting people in terms of the wind to not let their guard down. if you live in an area that is standing, clear any sort of dry vegetation. at least 200 feet in a perimeter around your house to try to help prevent and be prepared in the event wind comes back, winds come back early next week. in terms of things like the mudslides, that's what officials say they are talking about when they say there are too many safety issues still in these mandatory evacuation areas and they can't let people come home yet. we know you are frustrated, they say, but in addition to concerns possible hot spots, falling debris, doed power lines, there is also risks like this. so possible mudslides happening after the fact and they want to make sure the communities are safe before they let residents

back in. a little bit of hope today though for the residents waiting to get back to assess the damage and see their communities. the los angeles fire chief saying this at a press conference earlier. repopulation of residents in the evacuation ordered areas will not occur for at least one more week, for areas that are deemed safe. he said that timeline doesn't include the entire evacuation ordered area. it's based on safety. for people who have no idea when they can get back home, having a sense of a timeline, they think it will be at least one more week is a relief knowing that there is somewhat of a light even if it's not a very bright one at the end of them being able to just come home. those safety issues, fire officials say we can't let you back just yet. >> we also know california governor gavin newsom signed an executive order to fast track temporary housing today. what are the details of that plan? >> reporter: yeah, let me run through some of those details for you because the big thing, it will alleviate some concerns

about price-gouging. it is also going to try and streamline construction of temporary housing. they say it will make it easier to put trailers or other temporary housing type apparatus on damaged property while new residences are rebuilt. they said they are going to extend the prohibitions at least until march 8th on price-gouging. that applies to hotels, motels and other temporary housing. that's a bit of relief for a lot of people as they deal with this process of recovery. zinhle, kate. >> ellison barber for us. thank you. president-elect's choices to join the cabinet are on capitol hill today entering for their jobs. >> there were five confirmation hearings today. all of the cabinet picks appeared in person except for pam bondi, the nominee for attorney general. instead, character witnesses testified on bondi's behalf after she testified in person more than five hours yesterday.

senate republicans hope to confirm marco rubio as secretary of state on monday, inauguration day. this morning florida republican governor ron desantis named his replacement in florida, state attorney general ashley moody. julie, there is a lot going on, start with the choice for treasury secretary, scott bess ept. he explained his view on tariffs and facing questions on tax returns. what did he say and how is his confirmation looking? >> reporter: let's start with the last part first, that republicans have the votes needed to confirm pretty much all of these people except for those of those, the more controversial ones like rfk or tulsi gabbard. bessent doesn't need democratic votes to get confirmed. although his hearing faced fireworks from democrats on the panel. you mentioned tariffs. it was a big line of questions from senator ron wyden, for example, senator bennet pushed him on this issue because trump promised he would put tariffs on

goods coming in from mexico, canada, china, and democrats are worried that it's going to fall on americans to pay for it. watch this exchange. >> all through the campaign we heard they weren't -- foreign countries would pay it. that's bologna. it will be paid for by workers and small businesses. so your response? >> yes, senator, i would respectfully disagree, and the history of tariffs and tariff theory, optimal tariff theory does n support what you are saying. >> reporter: bessent said that irs program that makes it easier to file taxes will remain in effect for this year. he also gave trump credit for ushering the golden age of a new economy. >> and julie, the choices for secretary of the interior and administrator of the epa spaced questions over climate and energy policy. what did they say? >> reporter: doug burgum and lee zeldin getting grilled by

democrats on the heels of the wildfires. how he will make sure that climate change policy to counter that would be implemented would be the focal point of the epa and the interior. democrats don't expect the epa or the interior under either of these guys to have a policy close to president biden's. i think they were pleasantly surprised especially from testimony by lee zeldin because he countered trump's comments saying climate change is a hoax. zeldin said he doesn't belief that. zeldin said they need to work together to make sure they reduce emissions, reduce greenhouse gases. i thought that was interesting. >> julie sorokin from capitol hill, thank you. today's cnbc money minute. bp announces more layoffs to cut costs. >> and nintendo the release of the newest gaming console. >> let's start off with bp. it is cutting more than 7,500 jobs.

showing no signs of slowing down. >> actor director justin baldoni is now suing his former co-star blake lively and her husband ryan reynolds seeking more than $400 million in damages, accusing them of defamation and extortion. baldoni directed and act in the hit film "it ends with us," which starred lively as well. two weeks ago lively sued baldoni and his production company alleging harassment on set and a coordinated campaign to attack her r reputation. a lawyer for baldoni called lively's claims false and outrageous. nbc news entertainment correspondent chloe million as. >> this keeps getting bigger and bigger. walk us through what baldoni is alleging and remind viewers how we got to this point. >> to explain where we are, a couple of weeks back, how we not here. a couple weeks ago you guys might remember on new year's day there were two lawsuits filed. blake lively filed a lawsuit

against justin baldoni claiming harassment took place by baldoni against her on the set of "it ends with us" and an orchestrated smeacampaign took place behind the scenes with his pr team. and they had these text messages and then a little bit before that lawsuit was filed there was a explosive piece in "the new york times" with this very dramatic headline from the publicist saying, we can bury anyone. that same day, justin baldoni sued "the new york times" for libel for $250 million saying that blake lively had conspired with "the new york times" to make him look like this bad individual, when really it was all lively. now he put all of that in a lawsuit against lively. like you said, ryan reynolds. he says, hold on a second, it wasn't me orchestrating a smear campaign against lively. it was actually blake lively, her husband, her pr team coming at me because we had creative differences over the film. he is seeking over $400 million.

this was filed in new york. it's a civil complaint. not a criminal complaint. but we could see this play out in a courtroom. >> and there is so much here. but what is now blake lively or her husband, ryan reynolds, the actor, what are they saying? anything? >> haven't heard anything. so right now it's just this over 100-page complaint. in it there are emails, there are text messages between blake lively, justin baldoni. there is also correspondence between blake lively's pr team and outlets. and it's a lot for fans to digest and go through. what baldoni's team is saying is that they created a website they plan to make live in the coming days that will have all of this, a timeline and text messages for the public to read who is interested and make their decision as to whose side they are on. >> fascinating. thank you. the sports world is remembering broadcaster bob uecker who died today at the age of 90.

he was known as mr. baseball. >> after a fairly unremarkable playing career, he found a home as a play-by-play commentator for the milwaukee brewers more than 50 years. sam brock looks back at his career. >> reporter: bob uecker spent most of his adult life around ballparks. a major leaguer, comping a less than stellar career batting average of .200. it was after his last team released him that uecker found his power swing as an entertainer. >> welcome mr. baseball, bob uecker. >> reporter: he made some 100 appearances on johnny carson's "tonight show," starred in a 198 # 0 sitcom, mr. belvedere and a role in "major league." beer commercials made him a household name. >> good to see you. >> you are in the wrong seat, buddy. >> i must be in the front row. >> reporter: the line that made this milwaukee native famous. >> he missed the tag. >> reporter: the milwaukee brewers immortalizing him with a

one of the bullets also pierced through the wall of a family's home and almost hit an eight year old boy, who was sitting on the sofa. the suspect, or suspects responsible for this heinous act are still at large. we are seeking the public's assistance with helping us bring those responsible for this crime to justice. the police urges anyone with information to contact the department's detective division. we are following breaking news right now out of the peninsula, where tens of thousands of pg&e customers in foster city and san mateo. they're in the dark. nearly 36,000 customers lost power around 830 this morning. that number now down to around 27,000. still a lot of people. pg&e says power is expected back by early this afternoon, and it's thought to be caused by an equipment issue. still under investigation. the police department telling people not to call them, to inform them the power is out. a pulitzer prize

winning cartoonist is under arrest for possession of child porn. nbc bay area's ginger conejero reports on his bay area ties. darren bell is a cartoonist that got his start right here in the bay area. the 49 year old went to uc berkeley. he began by doi cartoons for the daily californian, and then he also contributed to the chronicle and other local outlets. but it was in 2019 when he received one of the biggest honors for his work. he was awarded a pulitzer prize for editorial cartooning and became the first african-american man to do so. the award giving body prize bell or praised bell for, quote, beautiful and daring editorial cartoons that took on issues affecting disenfranchized communities, calling out lies, hypocrisy and fraud in the political turmoil of the trump administration. bell has said the goal of his work is for people to be more respectful of human dignity. bell was arrested yesterday and booked into

sacramento county main jail. sacramento valley detectives from the icac or the internet crimes against children division, were tipped off by the national center for missing and exploited children. the tip was related to 18 files that were uploaded that contained child pornography. detectives conducted an investigation and located over 130 videos, 134 to be exact, of child pornography linked to an account that was owned and controlled by bell. investigators searched his home and found evidence to the case, as well as computer generated ai child pornography. bell is currently being held on $1 million bail. he is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow. now, this arrest is a big deal because it's also a first for sacramento valley, and it also of january 1st, ai generated as child pornography or computer generated child pornography is now listed as a criminal offense

some of the stories making headlines on "nbc news daily." >> conan o'brien is the recipient of the mark twain prize for american humor. he will be the 26th to get the honor, set to accept in march. o'brien is also a five-time emmy award winner and produced and wrote for "the simpsons" and "saturday night live"? pope francis fell at his papal residence. his arm is bruised but didn't break any bones. he slipped getting out of bed last month. pope francis turned 88 in december. he downplayed concerns about his health. and david lynch has died. nch is best known for his surreal visionary style. he created the tv mystery drama twin peaks, also directed the movies mulholland drive, blue velvet and elephant man. last year he revealed he had

buckets. >> and there have been questions circulating online for folks who have either damaged homes or completely lost their homes whether or not they need to pa rent and their mortgage. how does that work? >> so these are different depending if you rent or if you have a mortgage. if you have a mortgage, unfortunately, you still have to pay. this does not negate your legal obligation. but you should speak to your mortgage servicer and ask for a forbearance, a pause on the payments. if you are a renter, the laws are different. if your dwelling was entirely destroyed, you don't have to pay rent. if it's liveable, you do. so there is, obviously, a huge gray area. you got to speak with your landlord. >> the standard probably varies. thank you. disturbing images out of south africa where a months-long standoff between police and illegal gold miners left nearly 100 dead. >> the practice of illegal gold mining on the continent is surgek. i traveled to west africa last year for an inside look at what is driving the dark side of the gold rush.

these are the images that emerge from a gold mine in south africa southwest of johannesburg, today the end of a rescue operation where hundreds of miners were trapped for months. >> we faced challenges yesterday in the beginning. it's a dangerous operation. >> reporter: the incident highlighting the growth of illegal gold mining in africa ka and revealing the dark side of the gold boom. >> we found that more than 4345 tons of gold was smug owl out of africa. >> reporter: while the majority of the world's gold comes from large mining companies, gold is a source of income for millions of small artisanal miners, a source of revenue for mean african governments and the cause e of human rights violatis and environmental degradation. >> when you will look at google earth and you look at a map of ghana, you will see a vast majority of the territory is more brown. in terms of pollution, not only

on the different river but also for the farming. >> reporter: we traveled to ghana, west africa, last year for a firsthand look at the gold sector. so it's around 6:00 p.m. in the evening and we're heading up a massive hill to try to get a first hand look at one of these mines to see their environmental impact. more than 60% of ghana's fresh water sources are contaminated by chemicals and toxins from illegal gold mining. small scale miners dig holes on acres of hand near water without refilling holes after the gold is extracted. mercury can leak into the water. and because it's a cash driven industry, it's difficult to regulate. participants are in some cases dependent on criminal organizations and may inadvertently contribute to terror financing, money-laundering, sanctions of evasion or labor rights abuses.

but this gold, which is sometimes presented as recycled gold, can be gold which was two weeks before in a mine by a group or the criminals. >> reporter: in south africa, workers at illegal gold mines are zone as -- one who takes a chance. the chance at wealth now costing lives. this month's incident marking the deadliest encounter at a south african mine in recent history. >> when you buy jewelry, i think you have to know where the gold comes from. if it's not possible, you have to ask. if the company where you are buying this can't give you the answer, it's a red flag. >> and earlier south african police confirmed that at least 87 miners died and over 200 had been rescued. south african authorities criticized for their response to the trapped miners. a minister said the government

it is a little bit confusing. the reason why they the ban, the law in the first place that had overwhelming bipartisan support was because of the the national security concern. bytedance and the ties to china, and the question of whether it would be possible for china to then steal american user data or maybe even more concerningly manipulate the content that is shown to americans within the app. what's notable here, that concern has not changed. there is nothing to say that that's not a earn concern, not something that security officials have warned lawmakers about for months. what changed? 170 million users have been loud about not wanting tiktok to go away, doing things like a digital protest essentially where they made other apps that also have chinese ownership go viral, the number one and two apps in the app store light now. the point is not, by the way, users looking for an alternative to tiktok. the point users told me directly and the rationale here is certainly can be questioned, they want to make the

administration aware that they would rather have tiktok than their concern is about the chinese data having their government. chinese government having their data. >> no. could we talk about sort of the alignment when it comes to president-elect trump and tiktok? i understand tiktok's ceo will be at the inauguration. do we have a sense where they are standing as this ban is looming? >> a great question. another interesting thing, we are hearing the same messaging from both administrations. and what would be notable is if we get an update on exactly how the biden administration plans to handle this, if it were to lead to them saying we are not going to implement it in some way, you basically have -- day one, the 19th, they are no longer concerned and then we are into a trump presidency. he has been vocal. he wants to save tiktok. he h the ceo of tiktok at mar-a-lago. he has been posting how popular he was on the app. yes, i do think that the inauguration can play out like a

a new report finds cancer cases are increasing in women and declining in men. >> it also says that rates of breast and thyroid cancer for women under the age of 50 rose from 2002 to 2021. men in the same age group, however, had declining rates of melanoma and prostate cancer. joining us now to break this down, nbc news medical contributor dr. john torres. do researchers know what's behind the broader shift of finding more cancer in women than we had before? >> they think there is a few reasons behind this. they can't focus on one thing an can't definitely say these things are causing it, but they are accumulation of things out there. and number one, we are talking about the typical things we are looking at, diet, alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, especially in diet -- those thigh ultra processed food foods.

radon, obesity rates increased. with that, cancer rates increase as well. those combinations or at least those in individual people are causing this rate in the younger people to develop cancers. >> and to the point of younger people, the report finds cancer rates going up with young americans. which types of cancers specifically are we seeing in that group? >> you guys mentioned it earlier with women, especially those under 50, we are seeing increases in breast and thyroid cancer. and those breast and thyroid cancers might be driven by some of the facts we talked about. 30, 40 years ago, men had a 1.6 higher chance of getting cancer. now, women and men are essentially equal this distance rates. women 50 to 64 have higher cancer rates than men. so that combination is showing the numbers are only going up. unfortunately, you know, something we need to take care of. >> what is confusing to me is that you are saying women overall numbers are going up and

men's numbers are going down b t we are all human and doing kind of the same behaviors. why is it women with such a big increase? >> a few revenues. one could be lung cancer rates. lung cancer has decreased. it hasn't decreased as much in women the last few years. part of the reason they think is because women were later coming into the stages of smoking, which means they are later to give up that smoking. plus, there are possible genetic factors, women might have estrogen driven types of cancer out there. so it could be multifactorial here. >> thank you for breaking it down, dr. john torres, appreciate it. super bowl lix in new orleans is officially less than a month away. >> got the pump up music and whether you are more interested in the game or the halftime show, some of the biggest brands will be competing four attention during the commercials. a preview of some of this year's
