california's attorney general, if trump attacks the rights of our immigrants, i will be there. if trump breaks the law, we will see him in court. it feels kind of like we're in the same place we were, you know, eight years ago, where there's a lot of fear, there's a lot of uncertainty. brandon phillips is an assistant professor of public administration and public policy at cal state east bay. he says today's presser is one more sign that california's current leaders want to make it clear where they stand. i think, you know, what we're seeing with not just institutions of education, community based organizations and other entities around the state is that there is this desire to prepare and to identify ways that those of us within the state can assist undocumented individuals or assist people who may be targeted by the incoming trump administration. in san francisco, christie smith, nbc, bay area news. a last minute change for president trump's inauguration. why freezing

officers when a person is being searched. reducing delays in transport to the booking facility and making sure people have access to restrooms and water. it is critical that our law enforcement lead by example in upholding and respecting demonstrators first amendment rights. d.c. police also agreed in the settlement to restrict use of sting balls or explosive devices in the future. police are now only supposed to roll them on the ground, not throw them in the air except in extreme circumstances. this week, d.c. police chief pamela smith spoke about how her agency is preparing for monday. we know we'll be able to rise to the challenge because we've done it before. d.c. police have dealt with numerous protests and mass arrests in recent years. in 2020, officers arrested more than 100 racial justice protesters on swann street for violating curfew. seven people arrested later sued an internal affairs investigation found

officers did not use excessive force. and as we look ahead to monday, chief smith says her agency's stance is this violence, destruction and unlawful behavior will not be tolerated. offenders will face swift and decisive consequences, and the aclu tells me it sent letters to d.c. police and other agencies this week reminding them of those lawsuits and the resulting changes to the mass arrest policies. amy cho, nbc news. we will have live coverage of mr. trump's inauguration on this monday. witness the historic event right here on nbc bay area, beginning live at 7 a.m. president elect trump is promising a lot as soon as he takes office. here's meet the press moderator kristen welker with a preview of this week's show. president elect donald trump returns to the white house on monday. how are republicans preparing for what he'll do on day one? i'll sit down exclusively with house speaker mike johnson of louisiana. plus,

reconsider plans to potentially close their child's school. the district says it may be necessary to balance the budget. it's happening all over the bay area, but at this school, parents argue it will lead to major transportation issues and would tarnish the legacy of its namesake, who many see as an american hero. nbc bay area's ian cull spoke with the sister of the september 11th pilot. the school is named after. see, same way parents are vigorously
5:43 pm
defending their schools against possible closures, including at captain jason dahl elementary in san jose. we have to do something with the community to help the school. like many school districts in california, the franklin-mckinley school district is dealing with a budget deficit and shrinking student enrollment to help balance it. they're slated to close at least five of their 16 schools over the summer. doll elementary could be one of them. i don't see a legit reason to close the school while budget. that means budget is going to punish our kids, our future. the school is named after captain jason dahl. he was the pilot of united flight 93 on september 11th, when terrorists took control with a goal of crashing the plane into the u.s. capitol. instead, the crew and passengers fought back, forcing the plane to crash in a field in shanksville, pennsylvania. dahl attended the school as a child when it was hillsdale elementary. now it's named in his honor. today, his sister cacarol join the rally, pushing to save the school. it's disappointing to think that it

will be closed. could be closing. it's been a community school for ever since i went to kindergarten here. you know, and my siblings and i all went through here, and it was such an honor when they decided to name it after jason. parents argue the school actually has room to expand. they also say it's one of the few trauma skilled schools, which is critical for many students in need. and most of the kids walk to school. if it closes, they'd have to be bused to other campuses. we should consider having those bus routes adjusted. have those students come to dahl where they could, you know, benefit from, you know, a long established, you know, school. the district says the cuts are necessary because it has lost 40% of its student body since 2011. but in a statement said no final decision has been made if captain jason m dahl elementary is selected for closure. we remain deeply committed to honoring and celebrating the legacy of captain dahl, a hero who will always hold a special

place in our community. an advisory committee will give its final recommendations on what schools should close next wednesday, the 22nd. the school board will make its final decision on february 11th. in san jose, ian cull nbc bay area news. like you said, it is happening across the bay area, so this is something that people want to keep their schools open. all right. jeff is here as we head into the weekend. we know it's cold for the inauguration in d.c. this morning. i was like, whoa. what happened? it used to be crystal clear. in the morning. it was fogged in. kind of nice to get that change in there. yeah. i was like, whoa, right? yeah. like winter. yeah, a little cool, a little damp outside. we'll see more of that as we head through tomorrow. might make it help you to sleep in a little bit easier on your saturday forecast. and don't worry, we still have a good amount of sunshine coming as we get you into that microclimate forecast. we'll also be tracking some updated rain chances and also the wind next week. but the top thing we're watching right now is that development of fog.
5:46 pm
we have some low clouds near the coastline. the visibility is not that bad right now. lowest is down here towards half moon bay at eight miles. but i just want to get the warning out there that if you're doing any traveling down the central valley, it is expected to be thick, right on the interstate five and 99 corridor. visibilities might be reduced to a half mile and less in and throughout the bay area. we could see some patchy, dense areas, but also some of that typical fog moving in from the san francisco region. so we'll start it off with some of those low clouds. and then there you go. there's that sunshine as we head through the afternoon to just kind of save our saturday and get us some nice weather to be outside. morning temperatures will be back down on the chilly side. 41 here in the south bay, 36 over the tri-valley. also going into those 30s over to the north bay. san francisco 43 and you're in the upper 30s across the east bay. temperatures for tomorrow afternoon. we're in the 50s to low 60s. i don't think this is anything that's going to stop you from getting what you need to get done tomorrow, and hopefully that means a lot of
5:47 pm
relaxing for you. it's been a long week here, so i carve out a little time for yourself, right? always important 61 up here towards napa, 62 in concord, low 60s san jose to morgan hill. and we're at 56 and half moon bay, 59 in san francisco. win chances by next monday. still looks like there on the table for us. and i wanted to show you the overall weather pattern and what we'd be looking at. it's high pressure in the pacific, low pressure over the four corners. so the big change today is the placement of this low pressure. looks like it's going to be more off to the east now. we're still going to get in on the wind, but it doesn't look like extremely widespread wind for california. it's going to just happen kind of here in some pocke. we'll get a little bit up towards the bay area, the sierra and likely some of the most widespread wind down towards southern california. maximum gusts up to 50 in southern california in the mountains. so rigight now i doesn't look like those 100 mile per hour winds we had about two weeks ago, thankfully, but still fire danger. and in our
5:48 pm
mountains we'll see 20 to 35, so we'll get in on some wind. but right now it doesn't look like the worst of it. how about rainfall chances? well, high pressure still keeping it dry here all the way into the 24th, but this still looks like it might break down here and give us some rain chances by the 25th. some scattered rain. but look at southern california. they could get into some much needed rain here through the 25th, sixth and seventh. now, hopefully those totals aren't too high for them because that again, could bring some mudslides. and it's just been so slow going. january 3rd was our last storm and we only had a quarter inch of rain. we could go down as the third driest january on record. so on that 7-day forecast, we will stay dry. next seven days and then hopefully some of those rain chances from the 25th through the 28th. my umbrella is getting a little bit rusty. i'm going to have to start doing a rain dance sometime soon. just sitting there in the corner of the room and nobody wants to see me rain dance. if it brings rain, i'd

see it for sure. thanks. thank you jeff. up next, not just another number. the debate over whether new giants pitcher justin verlander should wear his usual number. our giants

5:51 pm
baseball. what jersey numbers do players wear? and should the giants new pitcher, justin verlander be allowed to wear his number 35? this sparked a debate, the only numumber that
5:52 pm
he's ever worn. but that's also the number of former giants all-star brandon crawford. our giants insiders discuss the uniform protol. here's verlander asked about potentially wearing brandon crawford's number. i know that buster reached out to him personally and he gave his blessing, but i haven't spoken to him yet personally. i also i don't know how do the fans feel about it. does anybody have a feel on that? i don't know, you know, i don't want to i don't want to come in on a, on a, on a bad foot, you know. but i would love i would love the opportunity to wear my number for the san francisco giants. i mean, like i said, i understand the magnitude of the franchise, like one of the most storied franchises in major league baseball. so to get to wear your number for that franchise is pretty cool. but at the same time, if there's another player who's come along and done something special, this is an interesting question, and i really don't have the answer
5:53 pm
yet. i think i'm hopeful that when i speak with brandon, i'll get a little more clarity. i know you know, it's different hearing it from buster and saying, hey, i spoke to brandon and he gave his he gave his okay, but i don't know. i just want to talk to him, person to person and really try to get a feel for it. and i can pivot one way or the other. crawford's kind of right on tt cutoff, i think with this sounds crazy, but he's right there with with bumgarner and lincecum as well, where i know the giants internally have had these conversations, where they go, what do you do? because at some point you can't just have 15 retired numbers. yeah, it's almost like a soft retired. yeah. take someone like a justin verlander to come along and be the guy who claims you're not going to give it to the june call up or whatever, who just needs some digits. yeah. it's just weird that this happened so soon after, you know, crawford's retirement and crawford leaving
5:54 pm
the team. verlander is interesting because he's he's going to go in the hall of fame. and this has been his number his entire career. at some point they'll have to make a decision on 35. but i think the fact that this happened so soon and it happened with this guy, probably more likely than not that he he is wearing 35 next year. i think verlander calls him up. they go out to a nice steak dinner and then he ends up with 35. nice. get all your giants news. as the team prepares to head to spring training, pitchers and catchers report. in just a few weeks, you can download the giants talk app. up next, some prominent senators have sent a letter to openai ceo sam altman. what they're pressing him on just days dave's been very excited about saving big with the comcast business 5-year price lock guarantee. five years? -five years. and he's not alone. -high five. it's five years of reliable gig speed internet. five years of advanced securit. five years of a great rate that won't change.

it's back. but only for a limited time. high five. five years? -nope. comcast business 5-year price lock guarantee. powering five years of savings. powering possibilities. comcast business.
