bundle up on the couch and enjoy this weekend. we have a lot to get to including the bitter blast impacting tens of millions this weekend and next weekend and forcing a major change to the inauguration plans bringing it inside the capitol rotunda. we have the latest on where the plans stand and get angie's forecast. we are live in israel where less than 24 hours that long awaited cease-fire is set to begin with the first hostages expected to be released. let's begin with tiktok. with so many questions after the supreme court ruling friday and the fate of the app now hanging in the balance. nbc's savannah llers is following every twist. >> peter and laura, good morning. the company is asking for a definitive statement to ensure non enforcement. companies that provided services to tiktok want to see more in writing to see they won't be hit

with billions of fines tomorrow if they keep up business as usual. >> reporter: in a unanimous decision, the supreme court said tiktok ban stands. the court upholding the law passed in april said the apple had to divest from bytedance or be shutdown in the u.s. tomorrow. >> always remember this moment when you think of the government. >> reporter: tiktok users quick to make their feelings known. >> all of you supreme court justices. >> reporter: the popularity is part of what makes it a threat to national security. know hnote noting a foreign versary to collect data from 170 million users. the court's ruling was clear, what actually happens next is anything but. the biden administration saying tiktok should remain available to americans, but simply under american ownership.

they will not collect the fines, but will they issue a statement saying so? let's say the app were to go dark on sunday, that's doesn't mean a permanent shutoff. they are working for a solution. >> the devil in the details. meanwhile, all these other people are going to other chinese owned apps. it is like whack a mole. >> that's the point people are making. they are not just looking for alternatives. i lost tiktok. what app is similar to tiktok. they want the government to recognize we will make the other chinese apps go viral. they could. >> savannah, you will be busy. thank you. i appreciate it. a cease-fire and hostage release is set for 24 hours from now to end the conflict that started on october 7th, 2023 and led to tens of thousands of deaths in gaza.

we have daniele hamamdjian in tel aviv with the latest. daniele, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter. in less than 24 hours, the skies over gaza will be clear and quiet. no israeli drones or israeli fighter jets. this morning, the qatari government in the cease-fire talks confirming that the cease-fire will begin 8:30 a.m. local time on sunday after the israeli governnt formally approved the cease-fire deal late last night. the first phase of the deal will last six weeks and see a total of 33 hostages released. we're talking women, children, the elderly and sick and wounded. on day one, tomorrow, we expect the return of three hostages. all of them women. the rest will be released on a weekly basis and during this period, we will see the gradual withdrawal of israeli forces from the densely populated areas as well as a surge in

desperately needed humanitarian aid in the gaza strip. since the announcement of the cease-fire on wednesday night, the israeli air strikes intensified killing at least 120 people and killing more than 30 children. i've got to tell you, peter, there is a mix of cautious optimism of anxiety and disbelief that the day has come after 470 days of war. >> the hope is these families get to see their loved ones soon and it will feel real and sense of relief. american hostages specifically still being held and when they may be released, daniele? >> reporter: of the seven american hostages, we understand three survived. according to a senior official, two are expected to be released in the first phase. keith siegel, his wife was released in november of 2023 as

well as sagui dekel-chen. he's in his mid-30s. his family hasn't heard anything about his condition in the past year. peter. >> daniele, thank you. turning now to the bitter cold for tens of millions over the next few days. the below freezing temperatures forcing the presidential inauguration indoors. we have more that in just a moment. first, angie is here with more on the dangerously cold temperatures. some of the numbers don't look real. >> it will be a prolonged period. here's what we got going on. we have the area of low pressure. the polar vortex, i'm sure. it has been popular in recent years. it has been confined to the arctic, but a piece ll shift in the south and work in the more than northern tier of the country. here's what we got. a major outbreak where temperatures are running 15

have people outside the mall on monday. the president will deliver the capital address from the rotunda and 20,000 seat arena in washington for people to watch the ceremony live. mr. trump told people they should dress warmly if they decide to go to the national mall. there won't be anything for them to see while there. he said he will be going to the arena himself after the swearing-in ceremony. it will host the parade. the last time we had a change like this was ronald regaan's celebration in 1985 when s hit 7 degrees in d.c. >> this is the second where no one is on the mall. vid first and now the cold. the president-elect's pick for homeland security secretary. the south dakota governor kristi

eerie normal in the air. this was someone's home, someone's home, and skeletons of them left. also, that brick chimney standing isolated in the middle of theke this. the death toll standing at 27 this morning. as you point out, dozens missing. crews still go door-to-door looking for remains. that process keeping thousands of people in the area from their homes or what's left of their homes at this point. in the meantime, while the investigation into how these fires started continue, one utility company accused of starting one of them is speaking out. multiple lawsuits now with this one accusing so cal edison of the failure to deenergize power equipment with the winds gusting last week. that suit claims that started the deadly eaton fire. just an allegation. the international ceo speaking

everything going on out there and we have the next santa ana wind event monday through wednesday with gusts 40 or 50 miles per hour. heads up there. the relative humidity is going to be low. here is the big picture saturday. rain from the great lakes to the gulf coast. that system will bring a little bit of interior snow to the new england area. look at this snow that develops tomorrow. an area of low pressure system bringing us some impactful now for the i-95 corridor. that's the weather across the country. and we are looking at some low clouds over walnut creek, some patchy fog around the bay. i saw a few, felt a little bit of mist down here in the south bay. we start in the upper 30s there through walnut creek, concord, danville at 37, some low 40s up towards the north bay. 47 right now in sunnyvale. and as we go on and plan our day, we also have to watch out for the early

the community of hollister is coming together to help the families of three teenagers killed in a car crash on tuesday night in gilroy. tonight, there will be a candlelight vigil for the three teens happening at the legacy church in hollister at 6 p.m. we spoke with one mother who says one of the victims, 17 year old victor lujan, was her high school friend's son. that's why she and her husband started a car wash raffle to help victor's family. estoy haciendo. what i'm doing is giving my time. what i can do with myy buness is what i'm going to do. the victims were identified on friday as 17 year old victor lujan and angel villegas lemus and 18 year old brandon alarcon. a fourth teenager and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to a hospital. the cause of the accident is still unknown. meanwhile, thousands more evacuation orders are being lifted for people in the

southern california fire zones. the death toll now stands at 27. firefighters are gaining more ground on the largest fires. the palisades fire is now 39% contained. the eaton fire is 65% contained. together, those fires burned more than 40,000 acres, destroying more than 12,000 structures. back here in the bay area, our cinthia pimentel has a look at our microclimate forecast. good morning. good morning everyone. well, that low clouds and the fog have made a return yesterday. and today continues down here through the south bay. i also felt just a couple drops of that mist. so maybe it is condensing up there in the lower levels. we are looking at those low clouds continuing through parts of walnut creek. maybe if you're inching closer to the delta, you also might notice some patchy fog. it is much colder there through concord compared to san jose. we're at 48 right now. south san jose, 37 up there towards concord. the low 40s continue through the north bay. let's stay out there in the east

have a great day. enjoy your weekend. morning. thanks for joining us on this saturday, january 18th, i'i'm kira klapper. the communiy of hollister is coming together to help the families of the three teenagers killed in a car crash in gilroy. tonight, there will be a candlelight vigil for the three teens at legacy church that's in hollister at 6 p.m. we spoke with one mother who says one of the victims was her high school son's friend. that's why with her husband, she started a car wash raffle to help that

family. estoy haciendo. what i'm doing is giving my time. what i can do with my business is what i'm going to do. the victims were identified yesterday as 17 year old victor lujan. angel villegas lemus and 18 year old brandon alarcon. a fourth teenager, as well as the driver of another car, were taken to the hospital. the cause of that crash is still unknown. meanwhile, in southern california, thousands more evacuation orders are being lifted for people in the fire zones. the death toll now stands at 27. firefighters are gaining more ground on the largest fires. the palisades fire is now 39% contained. the eaton fire 65% contained. together, those two fires burned more than 40,000 acres, destroying more than 12,000 structures. we're going to turn here locally to cinthia pimentel with our microclimate forecast. jason. good morning carol. good morning everyone. the weather will contininueo stay dry down there

in southern california. and for us here too. we are starting the morning looking at those low clouds through san rafael right there, 42 degrees. there are a couple of 30s right now through parts of the east bay over on in danville, 38, but a little bit more mild down here in san jose at 50 degrees. so we'll notice those peeks of sunshine coming through after those morning clouds. but the temperatures will stay near seasonal right there just hovering under 60 degrees for a high today in our inland valleys. so you can expect much of the same, not only today but for tomorrow as well. we'll talk about next week where we could see the return of those offshore winds here and in southern california. not as crazy as it did two weeks ago. and those temperatures going up a little bit as well. so a lot to talk about coming up at 7 a.m. i'll send it back to you. kira. all right, cynthia, thanks. also coming up at 7:00 on today in the bay, an app has become a lifeline for people threatened by those wildfires. and you may have downloaded it, too. we'll tell you more about watch duty straight from its creator. here in the bay area.
