is on for a killer. a triple stabbing in the east bay has turned deadly. we'll have updates from the scene. a diversity, socioeconomic race, political belief and all our houses burnt down. you know, it didn't care. it is not a club you really want to be a part of. survivors of the wildfires in la are calling for action from lawmakers. their message for america after losing everything last week. plus, the final countdown for tiktok. while you still might lose the popular app, even though politicians say they want to save it. thanks for joining us
6:01 pm
everyone. i'm bigad shaban and i'm gia vang. we continue following a developing situation in the east bay. several people were stabbed today in berkeley. one victim has died. all right, let's go live now to alyssa goard at the scene. alyssa, what can you tell us? bigad and gia. now, police are just wrapping up their investigation here, though the intersection is still blocked here at acton and russell in southwest berkeley. berkeley police tell me that there is no ongoing threat to the public, so no immediate concern for neighbors here. however, this is something that police are actively investigating. they say this all began just after noon today, when they got a call from this area about a stolen vehicle. but then they had to pivot when they also started getting calls about people on the ground bleeding in the same spo when police arrived, they found three people who had been stabbed two women or excuse me, t men and one woman. all three of those people were taken to the hospital. the woman ultimately died of her injuries and the two men,
6:02 pm
however, survived and police say they are in stable condition now. police have not shared the identities of those three people. they also have not said how those people are connected to each other, or what happened with the stolen vehicle investigation, which kicked this all off. now we are continuing to ask berkeley police questions for now. live in berkeley. alyssa goard, nbc, bay area news. alyssa, thank you so much. okay, new developments when it comes to a looming ban of tiktok in the u.s. on the app's website right now. tiktok is warning that services will be unavailable as it faces a ban in the u.s. the notice tells users that it is working to restore service as soon as possible. this comes as president elect trump tells meet the press kristen welker that he will most likely give tiktok tiktok a 90 day reprieve, although he underscores he has not made a final decision. and we should note the browser and app are still up as of news time. tiktok's u.s. headquarters is in santa monica, and there are a couple of reports about when it
6:03 pm
could go offline, some indicating as early as tonight. either way, the company says the app will shut down on sunday. tiktok says it wanted guarantees from the white house that providers like apple or google won't be punished for carrying tiktok in their app stores. this comes after the supreme court upheld the looming ban that says u.s. app stores must remove it unless its chinese parent company sells it by tomorrow. but now, democrats and republicans who both supported the ban say they may not enforce it. tiktok ceo expected to attend the president elect's inauguration monday. all right, bringing you back to the bay. an update now on the fire burning in moss landing that's just south of santa cruz. crews plan to keep the highway closesed overnight as they monitor the site for any flare ups. as of now, there are no flames visible. instead, monterey county leaders say that the fire at vistra, which is a battery energy storage facility, is only smoldering today. fire crews are still working around the clock because of the potential of that fire to reignite, but officials believe it's not likely things
6:04 pm
will get worse. this is a situation where technology has been both the front and the foe, a foe, because this is new technology with these storage areas, with the lithium batteries, we were exploring unknown territories with fires such as this. although we've had a few across the nation, this was something new to our county and i hope that it's the last one that we have in our county. 80% of the building and all the batteries inside went up in flames. because of the toxic nature of the fumes, roads were shut down and residents ordered to evacuate until that smoke cleared. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. and happening tonight, the hollister community plans to pay tribute to three high school students who tragically died earlier this week. investigators say the teens were killed when their car crashed in gilroy tuesday night. all three were students at hollister high school. there was a fourth student in the car who didn't die, but was in critical condition after the crash. tonight, a candlelight memorial is scheduled at the legacy church in hollister. the cause
6:05 pm
of the crash is still under investigation. well, a live look at capitol hill tonight. that is where preparations are underway ahead of monday's inauguration for president elect donald trump. but thousands across the country are making their voices heard ahead of his return to the white house. protesters taking part in the so-called people's march. organizers say the marches are part of a long term resistance strategy to proposed policies of the incoming administration. similar events were held right here in the bay area. nbc bay area's christie smith has a look at some of those demonstrations and how gop supporters are responding. in san francisco, people marched and rallied in the city's mission district. michael kushner came from the east bay to join in. so many people in this country who don't buy into what donald trump and his group are doing, and we just need to make ourselves visible. we need to organize. he had a number of reasons and concerns, you know, certainly preserving democracy, because without it, we can't
6:06 pm
fight for all the other issues that are important to us. but climate would be high on that list. roberto hernandez sees it this way, and it's also the beginning of the resistance of the next four years of all these promises and rhetoric that he's putting out, that he's going to do mass deportations. over in alameda, people marched to one of many cities in the u.s. where people demonstrated. we who are not being targeted, it's our responsibility, our honor, actually, to be a voice for those who are vulnerable and are afraid to speak up. so that means a lot. president elect donald trump's second term begins after the inauguration ceremony on monday. john dennis is among those looking forward to it. he's in washington, d.c, and a member of the board of the california republican party. you know, on the surface, i'm as excited as as anyone could be and as optimistic as i've ever been, frankly, about the
6:07 pm
direction that that washington will go in and where the country will go deeper down. you know, that side of me is tampers that that optimism with the realities of government and the realities of washington. those who see it differently in the bay area are ady to keep pushing back. you know, we've always, again, here in san francisco, have worked together for social justice. christie smith, nbc, bay area news. and we will have live coverage of when president elect trump gets sworn in for the second time. watch it right here on nbc bay area. that's monday, beginning at 7 a.m. san francisco mayor daniel lurie has only been in office for less than two weeks, but one of his first priorities is to make sure the city is ready to tackle a large scale disaster. earlier today, join leaders from a long list of city agencies for an emergency preparedness drill. they featured the san francisco fire department demonstrating its high pressure fire hydrant
6:08 pm
system,s well as other critical resources. fire crews also have fire boats ready to battle flames offshore. i think the key here is we have to continue to be as prepared as possible, whatever comes our way. with the challenges that we face and what southern california faces, you can never be too prepared. now, the timing of all this is important. this comes as the los angeles area continues to battle several deadly wildfires there. you may recall firefighting efforts have been hindered because of a lack of pressure and water in some local hydrants. investigators are still trying to determine the cause of those wildfires and dried up hydrants. well, president elect donald trump is expected to visit the wildfire ravaged areas of l.a. county next week. it would be his first trip outside the nation's capital following his inauguration on monday. mr. trump will likely tour neighborhoods charred by the palisades and eaton fires. right now, the palisades fire is 43% contained. it's burned nearly 24,000 acres. there's more
6:09 pm
progress on the eaton fire, with 73% containment. at least 27 people have been killed. 31 are still missing. flames have destroyed nearly 13,000 structures. today, fire investigators are in the region looking for what may have caused the wildfires. and it is a club that no one wants to join, but it keeps gaining new members. extreme weather survivors launched less than a year ago, and it aims to provide a support network for disaster survivors. but the group also helps people transform their traumatic experience into a call for climate action. national climate reporter chase kane introduces us to a socal family who lost everything in the eaton fire. but now they have a new mission. the orange tree out front used to match the front door of the moreno's dream home in altadena, but not anymore. we chose to remodel that house to make it a home for our daughters, and it's the backdrop of every memory i was going to have. of course, everythi i that matters, i

have. and yet, like i'm staring at the home that we built and the life that we built, you know, and the community. and a lot of that is gone. but they are hoping to channel this pain into something more positive by joining a group called extreme weather survivors. basically, it's americans from all the country who have experienced disasters likike ts. so they come together, they can support one another, but maybe more importantly, so that they can use their voices to let other people know this is not just a disaster. this is a disaster amplified by climate change. connecting with survivors was something i don't think we knew how sort of like comforting that would feel and that it existed. but none of us know what to do. and i think what's really beautiful is when you start to connect people to one another, where you don't start the conversation with climate
6:11 pm
change, but instead start with, you're hurting, how can i help? and then people start to understand this what we're up against. sierra co-founded extreme weather survivors less than a year ago, and in just that short time, the u.s. has experienced at least 23 major disasters, costing upwards of $200 billion and claiming more than 500 americans lives. this is not an individual problem or an individual state problem. we have got to work together. we have to, because the moreno's and so many other americans from coast to coast, keep facing the same painful truth that climate change doesn't care where you live or who you voted for. a beautiful thing about altadena is the great diversity, socioeconomic, race, political belief, and all our houses burnt down. you know, it didn't care. we're all impacted. we all were trying to work jobs and trying to build this little life. and so we have to have the conversation and not just
6:12 pm
conversations, but say, yeah, i'm willing to like, figure out what it is that we can do to make this different. change the course. and coming up in 90s. trouble for walgreens. we'll tell you why. the feds are suing the pharmacy chain. plus a reunion in the east bay. see the moment a teen meets the paramedics who saved his life. and right now, your saturday evening includes clear skies and walnut creek at 51 degrees. watching for some patchy fog overnight and the return of dry overnight and the return of dry offshore wind early next (humming) behold! a glorious round table pepperoni pizz... huh? ah. huh. well, behold the pepperoni and grilled chicken...? what the? 6:15 pm
suffered sudden cardiac arrest. jared armstrong and joshua king performed advanced cardiac life support measures and rushed ivan to the hospital, where he spent the next seven weeks. the three were beaming at the chance to see each other again. this is why we do this job. the next closest responding units were coming from here. industrial or fremont auto mall. 30 minute 15 minute eta we were less than five, so we cleared and attach ourselves to the call and we went and immediately started helping them out. and things went really well. and i'm glad that everything turned out. they're doing great. the paramedics say things could have gone differently if a friend's cousin, who was with ivan when the accident happened, hn't stepped in. that young man performed cpr until help arrived. incredible story there. okay. there is a warning along the coast tonight. tonight the national weather service warning of beach hazards starting at seven tonight through monday evening. they're warning of an

increased risk of sneaker waves and rip currents. and this was the view earlier at ocean beach in san francisco. it is telling beachgoers not to turn their backs to the ocean. it could potentially be pretty dangerous for some people there. good advice. especially if the sunny skies during the day. a lot of folks heading out to the coast, so that is the one advisory we have right now. but by the end of the weekend, we might see wind advisories hoisted again for the north and east bay hills. more on the wind in a moment. but back to the beach hazards statement. and that's for sneaker waves. notice the wave heights offshore. they don't seem all that extreme, but what's coming in is a westerly swell, long period swell which can be prone to those sneaker waves. so you're out there on the coast, and suddenly a much larger wave comes in. so keep a safe distance out on the coast. it will also be pretty foggy over the next couple of mornings right there along the coast. no fog right now in san francisco. clear skies, 50 degrees. seeing cooler temperatures up towards san rafael at 49 and around walnut creek 51 degrees. we did have highs close to the upper 50s a bit earlier and into san

jose 55 degrees low 60s earlier this afternoon. and as we move forward into your morning forecast, 30s and low 40s, it's been kind of chilly the last few mornings. we're going to have another one tomorrow along with the fog early in the day. then we'll begin to see hazy sunshine take over as the low clouds start to mix out. we've got numbers in the 50s around lunchtime and another day of 60s around san jose, but mostly upper 50s closer to san francisco and oakland. so there is a look at the fog footprint for the morning, then back into the hazy sunshine for the afternoon, clearing skies for the second half of the day. then our attention turns to the wind. not much wind during the day sunday, but as we head towards monday morning, here are the areas we could see. wind advisories, the inner portions of the north bay hills, and the diablo range as those wind speeds pick up after midnight sunday, during the day into monday, and then tuesday, the wind speeds come down. but here is the issue again. in southern california, stronger wind speeds dry, gusty offshore wind. again as we head into monday and

tuesday, especially for western l.a. county and ventura county. the reason why red flag warnings are hoisted again for the mountain areas all around la out to ventura county. this is going to be monday and tuesday. so long range. we're looking if there's any improvement in the overall weather pattern, at least to start the week. that's not the case with the gusty winds and high pressure keeping storms at bay. but by thursday, this high may recenter a little bit farther to the west, allowing this area of low pressure to drop in one that is likely not to bring a lot of rain around the bay area. but there's a hope here. we might begin to see more rain work its way into southern california as we head into next weekend, along with a chance of seeing snow returning tohe sierra by next saturday. so short term, it's the fog. will be watching for tomorrow morning and then tomorrow night into monday. gusty dry wind here and again in southern california. they just get one santa ana wind event after another. this one not expected to be as strong as what happened a week and a half ago. but the dry conditions continue
