"early today" starts right now. good monday morning. glad to be with you. i'm frances rivera. we begin today with bitter cold settling across the united states. about 175 million people are under cold weather alerts that will last days. some areas could experience wind chills as low as 55 degrees below normal. well, and below zero. the national weather service saying this will be the coldest air of winter season thus far, and in many cases, the colst in several years. it comes after the mid atlantic and northeast were hit with snow sunday with accumulations of up to 12 inches. this week's deep freeze making the situation even worse. nearly 1500 flights were canceled sunday while 5700 flights within or out of the united states experienced delays. attention now turning to the south ahead of a winter storm. weher alerts are in place from

texas to florida. houston's bush intercontinental airport announcing it will close due to incoming snow. michelle, good morning. >> good morning, frances. we are looking at bitterly cold temperatures, temperatures that are dangerous. we could look at the potential for frostbite. so you need to cover up. we're not just talking about the normal places that are cold or normal winter temperatures. these are dangerously cold. 188 million people impacted. and look at all these alerts from the northern plains to the central plains, even the southern plains and southeast. we are looking at excessive cold watch and warning as well. temperatures this morning so bitterly cold. 18 in oklahoma city. it feels like 6. it feels like minus 25 in minneapolis. it's going to be cold, too, for the inauguration. we're looking at temperatures only in the 20s. winds will be gusting up to 30 miles per hour, making it feel like 5-10 degrees. as we go throughout the rest of the country, the arctic blast is

taking hold. we're looking at temperatures right at the freezing mark in atlanta. 32 degrees. we'll talk more about the cold, also the snow, and the return of the fire danger in southern california in just a few minutes. >> oh, no. we don't want to hear that. thanks, michelle. after more than 15 months of a grueling war, a cease-fire is now in effect in the gaza strip. the first day saw an exchange of captives. three israeli hostages for 90 palestinians. hostage advocates say there is still a long way to go. >> we want all of them to come back. we want all of them to be here. and just, like, it's our mission. >> hundreds of aid trucks are now being let into gaza to alleviate civilian hunger and suffering brought on by the attacks. for the latest, let's turn to claudio lavanga. what do we know about those being released now? >> reporter: good morning,

frances. well, the first three hostages that were returned to their families are three young women, a 31-year-old, a 28 year old, they were both kidnapped from a kibbutz near gaza on october 7. and 24-year-old romi taken from the music festival on the same day. they were handed over by hamas on sunday, late on sunday morning to the red cross. then they were flown to a hospital in tel aviv, where they were deemed to be in stable nditions. now, as you mentioned, the cease-fire, israel released 90 palestinians, all women and children. the first six trucks laden with humanitarian aid were allowed to enter gaza.

and the palestinians have had to endure 15 months of relentless israeli airstrikes. if all goes to plan, more hostages and more palestinian prisoners will be released on saturday, and then so forth for every week for six weeks. that's when phase two of the agreement comes into effect, when all remaining hostages who are still alive will be released and israel will start a full withdrawal from gaza, frances. >> long-awaited, emotional reunions, thank you. inauguration day is here. the president-elect spent the weekend celebrating his victory in the capital, capping off the events last night with an exclusive fund raising dinner. elon musk and jeff bezos were among the guests. mr. trump gave a preview of his inauguration address, saying he will describe many of the executive orders he plans to sign right away. >> within hours of taking office, i will sign dozens of executive orders, close to a hundred, to be exact.
