5:00 am
four more years in the white house, and we're going to do a
5:01 am
lot of things right now at five, an historic dayhead, president elect donald trump is set to take the oath of office for a second time. security is tight as the event is set to move indoors due to the bitter cold weather in washington, dc. we have team coverage, as trump is also set to sign a flurry of executive orders from tech to immigration. many here in the bay area bracing for those actions on immigration. ahead, our ginger conejero saab has more on the rights california immigrants have under federal and state laws. also, a south bay sheriff speaks out about the issue. plus, bracing for another round of strong winds. the intense conditions crews in southern california are expected to face as they continue to fight devastating wildfires. this is today in the bay. good morning to you on this monday. i'm marcus washington. and i'm laura garcia. let's start out
5:02 am
with a look at that forecast for this monday. a lot of people have the day off. also martin luther king jr. day kari got a look at what we can expect. it is a cold start once again as we have a frost advisory in effect until 9:00. so as you're heading out for parts of the south bay, the inland east bay, as well as the north bay valleys, a temperatures start out in the low 30s, and as we go throughout the day, we are going to see those temperatures starting out with the 30s. but heading back to the 60s. as we go into the afternoon, we are going to see those temperatures warming up. so we'll take a look at that coming up in the full microclimate forecast. kari thank you. we are just hours away from the inauguration of president elect donald trump. we have a live look at the u.s. capitol this morning for the first time since 1985. the traditional stage outside of the building will not be used. instead, the swearing in will take place inside the capitol rotunda. a limited number of vip guests are set to attend. now the event was moved indoors due to the weather. here is a look
5:03 am
for you. this is a video over the weekend of that snow falling at the nation's capitol. attention! now turning to those frigid temperatures and icy roads. now the high in washington today only expected to hit 26 degrees. the inauguration parade is also moved indoors as well as a result of the weather. but officials in charge of security for the inauguration still don't know who will be allowed to enter capital one arena for that celebration today in the bay's alice barr. joining us live from washington this morning. and alice, certainly a very busy day on tap. good morning, marcus and laura. yeah, you just noted this. there are a whole lot of last minute changes to security, to how the hundreds of thousands of people in town to watch history unfold are going to be able to witness this, but indoors or outdoors, folks with the trump transition team say that the focus of his inaugural address will remain theame. about restoring confidence in america, with also key themes of
5:04 am
strength, unity and fairness. today, the nation's 45th president becomes the 47th in an inauguration day, as unusual as president elect trump's path back to the white house. my administration will take immediate and decisive action to confront every single problem america faces. only the second american president to win nonconsecutive terms. he'll be swornn inside the u.s. capitol over concerns frigid cold temperatures would be dangerous for the hundreds of thousands of people who were expected on the national mall. 20,000 will now watch on big screens in downtown dc's capital one arena. we one where the president elect rallied supporters on sunday and plans to rejoin them after he's sworn in. the curtain closes on four long years of american decline. we're going to stop the invasion of our borders. we're going to reclaim our wealth, and
5:05 am
we are going to make america great again. he also made a solemn visit to arlington national cemetery after a phone interview with nbc news outlining his day one plans on everything from saving tiktok to mass deportations of migrants, saying, quote, we're going to start with the criminal element and planning pardons for january 6th defendants. a stark reminder of how his last term in office ended. a second impeachment for criminal cases, with one trial ending in conviction, two attempted assassinations and a resounding election victory. later, president elect trump and the nation now preparing for his historic return to power. president elect trump is expected to sign more than 50 executive orders, with
5:06 am
immigration at the top of the list, as well as rolling back several biden administration policies, especially on climate change and a trump transition. official tells nbc news that he's going to sign a number of these orders in front of the crowd at capital one arena. back to you, marcus and laura. all right. thank you, alice. well, as the nation ushers in a new presidential term, there's rising concerns. and anticipation. it's heightened for undocumented immigrants across the country. and, of course, right here in the bay area. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live for us in san francisco this morning. and, ginger, there are communities out there anxiously anticipating president elect trump's first moves in office. that's right. good morning, marcus and laura. immigrant and migrant communities are closely watching. what will president elect trump do or enact once he steps into office? once again, that is a monumental question that has already caused fear and
5:07 am
nervous energy around his next term. now, that's the kind of energy that has already resulted in some agricultural workers skipping out on work in kern county, which is in the middle or at the height, i should say, of its citrus harvest season. immigration agents recently conducted several operations targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records, but local law enforcement agencies like the santa clara sheriff's office are doubling down that they are not collaborating with ice on its enforcement operations. we're not going to inquire about immigration status, even for those who are in our custody. we are not sharing information with ice. but there is justifiable reason for concern. south bay immigration attorney andrew newcombe says there is a large amount of fear from what he sees and what he hears. people are nervous to go to hospitals, and they're taking kids out of schools because they don't know
5:08 am
where the next threat will come from. i do think that there's a little bit of a panic that might get overblown. i think that governor gavin newsom has committed to not using state and local law enforcement to, you know, divulge any information with ice. and i think that there's going to be a lot of court cases that, you know, people are ready to litigate on these things. we have a friendly circuit here in the ninth circuit that covers california and several other states. that's generally been pretty progressive when it comes to immigration issues. attorney newcombe says there are defenses for those who get caught up in deportation proceedings, including 42 b. that's the cancellation for removal of nonpermanent residents. many people are eligible for this defense. they need to establish residency here in the country for ten years. they also need to prove good moral character and show a lack of criminal history. and it would help to have qualifying relatives, citizens or green card holders, and to show that those relatives will
5:09 am
suffer an exceptional and extremely unusual, unusual hardship. and those standards have gotten raised. or the bar to that standard has been raised in recent years. attorney newcombe says, but it is important for immigrant and migrant communities to have information and to know their rights about this. so in the next hour, we'll also talk about how state leaders are providing more guidance on this issue. but for now, we're live in san francisco, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. we are looking forward to that information later. thank you. ginger. pope francis is speaking out about president elect trump's promise to carry out those mass deportations once he is sworn in. he says such actions would be, quote, a disgrace. pope francis made the comments on an italian talk show. he then followed up by sending the president elect a telegram congratulating him on today's inauguration. the pontiff's comments come nearly a decade after he called the president elect, not christian, for wanting to build a wall along the u.s. mexican border. we'll
5:10 am
bring you full coverage of the inauguration all morning long. stay with us for a special edition of today, as live coverage is expected to get underway at 7:00 this morning. it's all ahead right after today in the bay. 509 for you right now. and this morning, the first group of palestinian prisoners have been released from an israeli prison in west bank. this is all a part of the recent ceasefire deal. the israeli prison says that services israeli prison service says 90 women and children are now free. israel officials detained them for what is being called security related offenses, from throwing stones at an alleged attempted murderer. it comes after three israeli hostages were freed from hamas captivity. the palestinian prisoners are headed to drop off locations where many had emotional reunions with family and friends. many are on edge this morning in southern california. strong winds are expected to return. in some cases, the wind speeds could reach 80mph. windy conditions are expected to peak
5:11 am
tonight into tomorrow, with a red flag warning taking effect at 10 a.m. this comes as the number of confirmed deaths from the two major wildfires is now at 27, with the overall amount of acres burned nearing 40,000 each. fire is also now more than half contained and according to the latest estimates, nearly 16,000 structures are destroyed. well, nothing is official yet, but president elect trump is expected to make the southern california fire zones one of his very first trips of his second administration last week. governor gavin newsom extended the invitation on nbc's meet the press yesterday. trump confirmed that a plan with christian walker on a phone call that he later re-upped during his rally at capital one arena. many are speculating that he will actually pay a visit to california by this friday. speaking of those winds down in southern california, meteorologist kari hall, of course, been tracking that. how are we looking, though, with those winds and the fire conditions? well, it's already
5:12 am
becoming gusty. and i do know that a lot of the fire crews have left southern california. so we may have those issues where we are seeing a lot of those new fire starts possible in the next couple of days. as the winds kick up. we are seeing this new red flag warning, as well as a high wind warning in effect for southern california, as we are going to see those winds increasing today. and it's already at about 20 to 25mph. but look at what happens as we go into the early afternoon. it looks like those winds in the hills really pick up to about 70 to possibly 80mph, while in some spots like malibu, it's going to be more like 40 to 50 mile per hour winds. still very strong wind gusts with the potential of those dry offshore winds really causing more issues between today and early tomorrow. but then eventually we will start to see the wind relaxing going into tomorrow night as well as into wednesday. now we are going to see for the bay area, some of our hills, getting some high
5:13 am
wind gusts in parts of the north bay. we're watching out for that and also talking about our dry week ahead that's coming up in the full microclimate forecast. back to you. thank you. kari. 512 this morning. and there is now more time on the clock for tiktok in the united states. next here on today in the bay, we're going to tell you about the new vows from president elect trump after the app went temporarily dark over the weekend. it's been on and off and it could go off again, which leads creators to kind of explore some alternatives. also, the new champ at the box office, the comedy that came up on top and the familiar ladies leading it. much more news ahead. you're watching
5:14 am
dave's been very excited about saving big with the comcast business 5-year price lock guarantee. five years? -five years. and he's not alone. -high five. it's five years of reliable gig speed internet. five years of advanced securit. five years of a great rate that won't change. it's back. but only for a limited time. high five.

5:16 am
15 as we get a look at san rafael, we've been seeing some patches of dense fog moving around parts of the north bay as well as the tri-valley, and we are going to see some of those high winds increasing as we go throughout the day, and a mostly sunny sky temperatures here heading for the upper 50s at noon, eventually into the low 60s for today and out on the roads. fog is really the only issue that we are seeing on our traffic maps. around the bay area. traffic is light, but it is early, so i'll keep an eye on everything for you. i'll have a look at weather and traffic coming up in a few minutes. well good morning. very happy monday
5:17 am
to you. it is doctor king's birthday so the markets are closed and we're going to have the same numbers come tomorrow. but they're good numbers. big rally on the market on friday. let's say good morning to hal and bp. so bp that's bp hal is halliburton. we're just a few hours away from a trump presidency. he says he's going to bring oil prices down. drill, baby drill. he says, but oil companies don't like low oil prices. it costs money to drill. a poll by the wall street journal says economists expect inflation will get worse under president trump. we've talked about this before, kicking out immigrant workers, deficit spending, tariffs will all lead to higher prices if they are actually put into place. tesla ceo elon musk was invited to speak at trump's rally last night, joined by his young son. he was on for a short time, one minute, 14 seconds before trump came back up on stage. tiktok back on people's phones after
5:18 am
disappearing for a few hours on sunday. tiktok shut itself down voluntarily ahead of the ban, only to reappear with this message thanking president trump. now mr. trump is not yet president, but tiktok understands the visuals here. now to remind you, it was trump who came up with the idea of banning tiktok in the first place. he now says he's going to save tiktok first by extending the time before the ban takes place, and then working out a 50/50 deal with the parent company, bytedance, for ownership. it's not clear that would satisfy the law, and it's not clear the bytedance is on board. i went on tiktok, can you believe what i'll do to win an election? and we went on tiktok. and republicans have never won the young vote, the youth vote. they win a lot of votes, but they never won the youth vote. we won the youth vote by 36 points. so i like tiktok, i like
5:19 am
it. in the meantime, creators are paying new attention to tiktok alternatives like instagram and youtube shorts. this is youtube shorts, where creators like this traveling couple can post shorter versions of their long format youtube videos. instagram has basically the same thing, and soon to be first lady melania trump is selling her own crypto coin, the melania coin. president elect trump sells his own coin. now, the fine print says the money for the purchase of the coin goes into one of trump's companies. that it's not an investment. it's a show of support for the trump's current price for a melania coin. around $11, though that fluctuates because it's a crypto coin. you don't actually get anything. you just get a number, the number of things that they are selling. remember, president carter sold his peanut farm so he wouldn't sesell peanuts. the trumps continue to sell coins and shoes. $100,000 watches, hats, bibles, and of course, hotel rooms and golf course time for
5:20 am
which they're going to charge the secret service. if they did last time. anyway, very different. very. yeah. all right, here we go. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. 519 right now, after 47 years of family owned burger place in morgan hill calling it quits. the owners of the dairy delite drive-in on monterey roaday they're shutting down at the end of the month. the kim family bought it back in 1978 but decided to sell it. aside from its classic burgers and fries, dairy delite is also known for its caramel and rootbeer milkshakes, as well as their corn dogs. it was closed on sunday, but it should be open six days a week until 8 p.m. for the rest of the month. no word yet on what the new owners have planned for that business. well, trending this morning, a lot of laughs at the box office over the weekend as a new buddy comedy premiered. yeah, so unlike the characters there in the movie, one of them days had no trouble raking in the cash.
5:21 am
my credit score is currently a little. are you having a heart attack? i've never seen a credit score this low. you lucky she holding me back. s one of them days, the comedy starring keke palmer and sza debuting at number one with $11.6 million. that movie, produced by keke along with issa rae. the movie just edged out disney's mufasa, which took in 11.5 million. wolf man coming in at number three. did you go see it? i did not. lot of friends who talked about it who said, like, you got to go see it, you got to go see it. so keke palmer was on the today show last week, and she's adorable. yeah, it looks funny. a lot of people say for cinthia, you know, she's a music artist. she's got timing. but they say that she's just. you don't see her as the artist. you just see her as that actress. so there you go. check it out. all right. boy, it's been cold. yes, and it's going to be cold the next several mornings. we're starting out with freezing temperatures and a frost advisory in effect. as you're heading out the door. right now, we're at 38 degrees in martinez and 36 in santa rosa, 38 in san jose. and we
5:22 am
also are watching out for those high winds. now we're getting a wind advisory in effect for the north bay mountains until 1:00 tomorrow morning. currently in mount saint helena, we're getting a wind gust at 56mph. a lot of us in the valleys are not feeling that. with a calm wind to start out, and our temperatures today are headed for the low 60s, martinez today will be 62 and 64 in san jose. we're also going to be above what we typically see for parts of the north bay. now. for tomorrow, we are going to see some sghtly warmer temperatures headed for the mid 60s, more widespread across the bay area, and even some upper 60s for santa rosa on wednesday, with upper 60s for the south county as well. when we compare that to what's happening elsewhere, there's this plunge of the polar vortex that's causing the temperatures in some parts of the midwest and even the deep south to reach just barely above freezing and even single digits, and even below zero for some of the northern states. tomorrow, we're expecting some snow across the
5:23 am
gulf coast. i don't know how long it's been since we've seen something like that happen. it's going to make big headlines while we're talking about the teens and 20s in d.c. today, our next chance of rain and sierra snow will come in toward the end of the weekend, so we're looking at a slight chance of showers on saturday. most of that activity kind of skipping around the bay area, but we'll be watching this next storm system that could potentially bring us some showers, but it is dry and very warm for this time of year throughout much of the week. laura. marcus. thanks, kari. well, today is doctor martin luther king junior day and ahead here on today in the bay, we're going to look at the way many across our nation are honoring doctor king's life and his

i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah. i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire risk from our equipment by over 90%. that's something i want to believe. [skateboard sounds]
5:30 am
30, the latest on the inauguration, now just hours away. i do believe that there will be more enforcement with with raids, with deportations. however, i do think that it's going to take some time. the trump presidency ushers in new uncertainty, especially for immigrants. the expert advice from one bay area immigration attorney, and the immediate steps someone should take if they're caught up in immigration raid or roundup. also, a deadly high speed multi-car crash in san francisco. new details we're learning this morning about a suspect and a robotaxi in the wrong place at the wrong time.
5:31 am
this is today in the bay. 530 on your monday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at that mlk day forecast. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect out there. we're starting out with a frost advisory in effect for these areas shaded in blue. that includes san jose. livermore up to napa and santa rosa, where some of our valleys will dip down into the low to mid 30s. as you're heading out. right now we're at 38 degrees in sunnyvale, and it's 39 in danville and mucof the north bay. seeing temperatures that we've seen throughout much of last week, which continued into the weekend as well as this morning. but we've also seen some patches of fog that has reduced visibility to about a quarter mile or less from livermore to concord, as well as napa. quarter mile visibility there and into novato. so watch out for that. allow some extra time to get to work in gilroy. we're starting out just very chilly temperatures in the 30s
5:32 am
and then headed for the low 60s for this afternoon. we'll get a look ahead and the rest of the microclimate forecast coming up. well, breaking right now, president biden issuing a last minute set of pardons. this is during his final hours in office. in a statement, he admits these are essentially pre exemptive moves to protect against potential revenge. motive motivated prosecutions by president elect trump. the pardons include former chief medical advisor doctor anthony fauci, general mark milley was a joint chiefs chairman who once called trump a fascist, and congressional members who served on a select committee investigating the january 6th insurrection and u.s. capitol and d.c. police who testified to the committee. in his statement, president biden called each case an exceptional circumstance and that he's concerned about potential bias, baseless investigations. well, in just
5:33 am
hours, donald trump will once again be president of the united states. scott mcgrew. the inauguration is today and a very cold washington, d.c. ready to go. very cold. good morning to you. weather's pretty rough. republicans, though warned, warmed by the fact they'll occupy the house, the senate, and they move the whole thing inside. that helps to a peaceful transition of power today, one of 59 inaugurations of 46 presidents, with only one marred by violence. live pictures of the capitol in washington. the crowd already beginning to gather. security in place as well. our full time coverage starts at seven. this morning,, president elect trump becomes our president at 9 a.m. our time. a repeat performance, of course. president trump was sworn in as the 45th president. president of the united states in 2017. his first inaugural address was a departure from past presidents, noted for its
5:34 am
dark imagery talking about rusted out factories scattered like tombstones and american carnage, and the crime and the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential. this american carnage stops right here and stops right now. now, the day after washington saw one of the largest protests in its history, with the women's march estimated to be at least a half million strong, adding in marches in other cities. historians say it may have been the largest single day protest in u.s. history. and that week the world was introduced to sean spicer, who introduced a white house press conference whose facts often conflicted with the facts. the press was presenting.
5:35 am
on the first day, over the size of the crowd at the inauguration, this was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration period, both in person and around the globe. these attempts to lessen the enthusiasm of the inauguration are shameful and wrong. that was 2017. four years later, president biden sworn in on the same capitol steps under very different conditions. we were in the middle of a pandemic. half a million americans were dead. a half million to go. we're entering what may be the toughest and deadliest period of the virus. we must set aside politics and finally face this pandemic as one nation, one nation. and i promise you this. as the bible says, weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. we will get through this together.
5:36 am
together. much of biden's speech called for an end to what he called an uncivil war, and promising a day of histo and hope. now, throughout his presidency, president biden would warn about the threats of populism and nationalism and the threats of another trump presidency, notably at a speech in philadelphia days before the 2022 midterms. but in the past few weeks, now tt we know there will be a trump presidency, biden's been warning about a new american oligarchy not just a rich president, but a world run by the very rich, from social networks to newspapers and more. biden never named names, but we have watched elon musk alongside trump. big changes from jeff bezos and mark zuckerberg as well, all of whom will be front row. this morning. the tesla ceo spoke at last night's trump rally, joined on stage by one of his sons. the speech was fast. less than two minutes, mostly consisted of make america great again. president elect trump, meantime,
5:37 am
says he will sign a 100 executive orders in his first days of his presidency, some of them today in front of the crowd, including new oil leases, ending support for electric vehicles, ending da in the federal government, and most importantly, in this case, changing the status of career federal workers so they can be fired more easily. there are two types of federal workers political, like the secretary of transportation, who works at the pleasure of the president, and career workers who support those people. experts in transportation, for instance, this new class of worker calls schedule f was put into place at the end of trump's first presidency, but he never finished implementing it. and president biden, laura canceled it. well, president elect also expected to sign an order to crack down on unauthorized immigrants in california. governor gavin newsom already taking added steps to try to protect immigrants. but some advocates fear it may not be enough in the event of
5:38 am
threatened ice raids. we spoke with one san francisco based immigration attorney. he says people should definitely be aware there are steps to take if they're caught up in a detention raid, and that starts with knowing your rights, including the right to remain silent. definitely making them aware of their rights. so in any type of roundup, it's imperative, documented or not, especially if you're undocumented, to assert your right to remain silent, not sign anything without the presence of an of an attorney. your attorney asked to speak with an attorney before you sign anything and just limit to answering basic identifying questions like name, date of birth, place of birth, but not generally give any other information. because i find that these pretextual stops that are biased take advantage of people's fear with some of the government officials, because people don't know that they have these rights they can assert. he also says the bay area and
5:39 am
federal judges here may be more empathetic than immigration authorities in other parts of the country. also, in many cases, providing an immigrant does not have prior criminal record. the act of deportation will likely be long and drawn out in the legal process. we'll have nonstop coverage on air and online of the presidential inauguration. coverage once again starts at 7:00 this morning. t the peaceful transfer of power takes place as donald trump becomes president at noon eastern time, 9:00 this morning here in california. developing this morning. one person is dead, several others seriously injured after a multi-car crash in san francisco. this happened last night at the sixth street offramp near harrison street. at least six cars were hit. a dog died as well. one person who lives nearby called it a high impact crash on what should be a low speed city street. it's unacceptable really. we need to be take care of each other a

little better. i mean, we have to be more patient. that's all i can say. investigators are looking into the possibility that this crash may be tied to a hit and run on a nearby interstate. this was 280 a short time earlier. they also say that a possible suspect may be among those injured, but none of that has been confirmed just yet. now, in another unusual twist, an unoccupied self-driving waymo car was among the vehicles involved. investigators do confirm that that car was among those stopped in a line of traffi. at the moment of that impact. the company provided a statement to nbc bay area saying that its car was struck by a car directly behind, which was also stopped in traffic. our investigative team, meanwhile, has learned this actually marks the first time ever that a truly autonomous vehicle with no operator in the driver's seat has been involved in a deadly collision anywhere in the u.s. authorities have not yet identified the victim in a
5:41 am
