we're going to stop the invasion of our borders. we're going to reclaim our wealth. we're going to unlock the liquid gold that's right under our feet. liquid gold. right now, at 6:00, special coverage of the inauguration of donald trump. as he prepares to take the oath of office for a second time. security is tight as the event is set to move indoors due to the bitter cold weather in washington, dc. we have team coverage, as trump is also set to sign a flurry of executive orders from tech to immigration, and many here in the bay area are bracing for those actions of immigration. ahead, our ginger conejero saab. she has more on the rights california immigrants have under federal and state laws. also, south bay sheriffs speaking out about the issue. plus bracing for another round of strong winds. the intense conditions crews in southern california are expected to face as they continue to fight devastating wildfires. this is
6:01 am
today in the bay. a good morning to you on this monday, mlk day. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we're just hours away from the inauguration of president elect donald trump. we have a live look at the u.s. capitol for you this morning. for the first time since 1985. the traditional stage outside of the building will not be used. instead, the swearing in will take place inside the capitol rotunda. a limited number of vip guests are set to attend. now that event was moved indoors due to the winter weather hitting d.c. over the weekend. now the high today in washington, d.c. only expected to hit 26 degrees. the inauguration parade is also now moved indoors as a result of the weather, but officials in charge of security for the inauguration still don't know who will be allowed to enter capital one arena for that celebration. we have team coverage on today's inauguration today in the bay's ginger conejero saab. she's live for us
6:02 am
with more on the protection unauthorized immigrants have as trump gets ready to take office. but first, let's head over to today in the bay salazar park. she's joining us live from washington this morning. and alice, certainly a busy day on tap there in washington. good morning, marcus and laura. yeah. as you just laid it out, a whole lot of last minute changes to the way this inauguration day is going to look. but inside or out, president elect trump is planning to focus on the same message in his inaugural address, with themes of restoring confidence in america of unity, strength and fairness. today, the nation's 45th president becomes the 47th in an inauguration day. as unusual as president elect trump's path back to the white house. my administration will take immediate and decisive action to confront every single problem america faces. only the second american president to winn nonconsecutive terms. he'll be sworn in inside the u.s. capitol
6:03 am
over concerns frigid cold temperatures would be dangerous for the hundreds of thousands of people who were expected on the national mall. 20,000 will now watch on big screens in downtown d.c. s capital one arena. we one where the president elect rallied supporters on sunday and plans to rejoin them after he's sworn in. the curtain closes on four long years of american decline. we're going to stop the invasion of our borders. we're going to reclaim our wealth, and we are going to make america great again. he also made a solemn visit to arlington national cemetery after a phone interview with nbc news outlining his day one plans on everything from saving tiktok to mass deportations of migrants, saying, quote, we're going to
6:04 am
start with the criminal element and planning pardons for january 6th defendants. a stark reminder of how his last term in office ended. a second impeachment for criminal cases, with one trial ending in conviction, two attempted assassinations and a resounding election victory. later, president elect trump and the nation now preparing for his historic return to power. president elect trump is expected to sign more than 50 executive orders today, focused in large part on immigration and rolling back a number of biden administration policies, especially related to climate change. several of those, we're told, are going to be signed in front of the crowd at capital one arena. marcus and laura, back to you. all right. thank you very much, alice. a busy day ahead. we know, as the nation ushers in a new presidential term, there is increased concern and anticipation is heightened around undocumented immigrants
6:05 am
across the country and right here in the bay area. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. this morning, there are communities anxiously anticipating president elect trump's first moves in office. that's right. marcus and laura and i want to give you some numbers here, because overall in the country, there are an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants or unauthorized immigrants, i should say 2.5 million, more than 2.5 million live here in california, which is why this is specifically impactful for the state and foror the bay area.a.t will the president elect do once he steps into office? again, it's a monumental question that's already caused some fear and nervous energy around that, and that has resulted in some agricultural workers skipping out on work recently down in kern county. that's aually going through the height of its citrus harvest season. n, that happened as immigration agents recently conducted several
6:06 am
operations targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records. but law enforcement agencies are doubling down that they are not collaborating with ice on its enforcement operations. the focus of those operations are targeting undocumented individuals with criminal records. as of september of 2024, over 435,000 undocumented immigrants are on ice's non-detained docket, which means they have been identified by ice but are not in custody now. an additional 220,000 have pending criminal charges. there is a justifiable reason for concern, even for those immigrants without criminal records or undocumented immigrants without criminal records. south bay immigration attorney andrew newcomb says that people are nervous to go to hospitals. some people are taking their kids out of schools because they don't know where the next threat will come from. we have a friendly circuit here in the ninth circuit that covers california and several other states. that's generally been pretty
6:07 am
progressive when it comes to immigration issues. attorney newcomb says there are defenses for those who get caught up in deportation proceedings, including 42 b. that's a cancellation for removal of nonpermanent residents, and many people are eligible for this. he says they need to establish residency in the country for ten years. they need to be of good moral character, so they need to prove a lack of criminal history. and it would support to have qualifying relatives or citizens with or people with green cards, relatives with green cards showing those relatives will suffer an exceptional and extremely unusual hardship is also a requiremt. now, california attorney rob bonta has also released guidance for local law enforcement, for prosecutors and defense counsel on what is now existing under law, or updated guidance with what kind of relief that they can seek and what law enforcement can and cannot do. they've also released
6:08 am
some resources for people to report hate crimes. so as you can see, this is obviously a huge issue for california and the bay area. it's really something that so many people are watching and keeping a close eye out for marcus and laura that they are. we've heard a lot about it here in california for sure. all right, ginger, thank you. 607 right now, pope francis is speaking out about president elect trump's promise to carry out those mass deportations once he is sworn in. he says such actions should be, quote, a disgrace. pope francis made the comments on an italian talk show. he then followed up by sending the president elect a telegram congratulating him on today's inauguration. the pontiff's comments come nearly a decade after he called the president elect, not christian, for wanting to build a wall along the u.s. mexican border. we'll bring you full coverage of the inauguration all morning long. stay with us for a special edition of today, as live coverage is expected to get underway at 7:00 this morning.
6:09 am
it's all ahead right after today in the bay. well, this morning, the first group of palestinian prisoners have been released from an israeli prison in west bank. this is part of the recent ceasefire deal. the israeli prison service says 90 women and children are now free. israel officials detained them for what is being called security related offenses, from throwing stones at an alleged attempted murderer. it comes after three israeli hostages were freed from hamas captivity, and the palestinian prisoners are headed to drop off locations. we hear many of them have already had emotional reunion with family and friends. 608 many are on edge this morning in southern california. strong winds expected to make a return. in some cases, the wind speeds could reach 80mph. windy conditions are expected to peak tonight into tomorrow, with a red flag warning taking effect at 10 a.m. this comes as the number of confirmed deaths from the two major wildfires is now at 27, with the overall amount of acres burned nearing 40,000
6:10 am
each. fire is also now more than half contained and according to the latest estimates, nearly 16,000 structures are destroyed. now, nothing is official just yet, but president elect trump is expected to make a visit to southern fire zones. one of his very first trips of his second administration. now, last week, governor gavin newsom extended the invitation on nbc's meet the press. this weekend, the president elect confirmed that the plan is to visit now. mr. trump mentioned it again during his rally at dc's capital one arena. many are speculating that he'll visit this friday. quite the busy week. yeah. all right. well, we do certainly want to turn to those winds down in southern california. we know that was a big cause of that spread. i mean, just wide spread of the fire. how are they looking now? and as we mentioned, 80 mile per hour winds. i mean, it's so very bone dry. we still haven't had any rain. and there still may be some of those fires still smoldering in the burn scars that we had from the palisades
6:11 am
and eaton fires. and now with this new red flag warning going up that continues through tomorrow, we could possibly see not only some of those fires spread, but also new fires start as we are seeing those high winds and extremely low humidity. her forecast and somee hills. it really just goes off the color contours here. the charts here as we're seeing winds that could potentially reach 70 to 80mph. and when it blows down the hills and offshore, we see the humidity levels dropping as that occurs. so that could once again be a reason that we see some of those fires start into tomorrow afternoon. it is still breezy, but we will gradually start to see the wind calming down. we're starting out with a wind advisory in some of our north bay hills. in these areas shaded in brown, that continues until 1:00 tomorrow morning, and we're currently still seeing those wind gusts and spots like mount saint helena up to 57mph right now, and breezy winds throughout
6:12 am
the north bay, with santa rosa now seeing those winds at 22 and some of the hills and elevations above 1000ft with some gusty winds this morning. so we'll continue to monitor that. we'll talk about some rain down the road in our bay area forecast coming up in just a few minutes. all right. thank you. kari. 611 right now following a short ban, tiktok makes a comeback next on today in the bay. the reason it's back despite a ban which took effect and what may lie ahead for the app. but the on again, off again behavior of tiktok in the u.s. government means some creators are moving elsewhere. and a heartwarming reunion after first responders in southern california rescue a tortoise believed to have been killed in the wildfires. the sweet moment just ahead for us.

and he's not alone. -high five. it's five years of reliable gig speed internet. five years of advanced securit. five years of a great rate that won't change. it's back. but only for a limited time. high five. five years? -nope. comcast business 5-year price lock guarantee. powering five years of savings. powering possibilities. comcast business. 6:15 am
right now at 614, we are heading to palo alto with a live look outside at highway 101. we are starting out with temperatures in the upper 30s here. as of now, visibility is clear as we've seen the fog kind of drifting around parts of the bay area and lots of sunshine today with a gradual warm up and highs here headed for the low 60s. we'll get a look at some changes ahead in our microclimate forecast, and here's a look at the berkeley curve, where we are
6:16 am
seeing a smooth flow of traffic on this holiday. no major issues out there on the roads, so i'll have a look at weather and traffic coming up in just a few minutes. well good morning. very happy monday to you. it is doctor king's birthday so the markets are closed and we're going to have the same numbers tomorrow. but they're good numbers. big rally on friday. let's say hello to hal and to bp. these are oil stocks hal is halliburton. bp is bp. we're just a few hours away from a trump presidency, and he says he's going to bring oil prices down. drill, baby drill, he says. but remember, oil companies don't like low oil prices. it costs money to drill. a poll by the wall street journal journal says economists expect inflation will get worse under president trump. we've talked about this many times kicking out immigrant workers, deficit spending, tariffs will all lead to higher prices if they're actually put into place. tesla ceo elon musk was invited
6:17 am
to speak at trump's rally last night, joined by his young son. he was on for one minute, 14 seconds before trump came back up on stage. tick tock. meantime, on people's phones, after disappearing for a few hours on sunday, it shut itself down voluntarily ahead of the ban, only to reappear with a message thanking president trump. now, mr. trump is not yet president, but tiktok gets the visuals. trump, to remind you, first came up with the idea of banning tiktok in the first place. now says he's going to save tiktok first by extending the time before the ban takes place, and then working out a 50 over 50 deal with the parent company, bytedance, for ownership. it's not clear that would actually satisfy the law, and it's not clear bytedance is on board. i went on tiktok, can you believe what i'll do to win an election? and we went on tiktok. and republicans have
6:18 am
never won the young vote, the youth vote. they wi a lot of votes, but they never won the youth vote. we won the youth vote by 36 points. so i like tiktok. i like it. in the meantime, creators are paying attention to new tiktok alternatives like instagram and youtube shorts. this is youtube shorts, where creators like this travel couple can post shorter versions of their long format youtube videos. instagram has basically the same thing, and soon to be first lady melania trump is selling her own crypto coin, the melania coin. president elect trump also sells his own coin. the fine print says the money for the purchase of the coin goes into one of trump's companies, and that it's not an investment. it's a show of support for the trump's current price, around $11, though, that fluctuates. and because it's a crypto coin, you don't actually get anything you can actually put in your hand. now, you remember that president carter sold his peanut farm
6:19 am
because he didn't want to sell peanuts. he thought that was inappropriate. the trumps. now we don't know what they're going to do. as of 9 a.m, our time still sell coins and shoes and hundred thousand dollar watches and hats and bibles and of course, hotel rooms and time on golf courses. right. they own the property. yeah. all right, new era. here we go. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. well, we've been talking about, you know, the wildfires in southern california amidst the tragedy there. we do have a happy reunion to tell you about. and you may want to chalk this one up to having a hard shell. true heroes. true heroes. okay, you probably like. what is that? okay, so cameras, they're capturing this reunion. it's involving a 100 pound pet tortoise. actually survived a fire that destroyed one family's home and eaton fire. this is in altadena. one local deputy helped deliver that turtle back to the family. so after first responders found it buried in a hole in the backyard of that
6:20 am
family's home. wow. wow. smart animal. i mean, you know. yeah. and had the shell. that's pretty amazing. it's nice to see those reunions. i was just i was like, it's really nice to see that and all. what's happening out there. i went to a dinner last night and a friend of in the group from pasadena family's first home. he said his parents bought their first home in altadena when they first moved to this country. they've since moved, but that home is now gone and a lot of memories, memories are gone for a lot of people. he's like the entire community, not just that house and not all of it's tragic. it's such a beautiful area. so to see stories like that, it is really nice. yeah, like to see the stories of hope out there concerns once again because the winds are going to kick up there. yeah. so there's going to be another red flag warning in effect for today and continuing through tomorrow morning here in the bay area. it's breezy, but we're also seeing the development of some dense fog, mainly in parts of the north bay as well as in the tri-valley. so we've been seeing the fog moving around the east bay. visibility down to a quarter of a mile in
6:21 am
concord and livermore. quarter mile visibility as well as novato. and it's been moving in some different areas. so just watching out for that as you're driving to work, as our temperatures are now dipping into the mid to upper 30s, napa at 35, it's 43 in san francisco and 37 in sunnyvale, as well as 37 in pleasanton. but look at our afternoon highs for today. headed for the low 60s once again, pretty nice with some long sleeves or a light jacket. will keep you comfortable with all of the sunshine today, and it will be slightly warmer tomorrow with parts of the south county in the mid 30 or mid 60s, and for the north bay it will be in the low 60s going into the middle of the week. we connue to warm up with the lack of rainfall, all of the sunny skies and seeing that building high pressure while there is a plunge of this polar air surging across the country, and there's going to be a lot of new records set, as we've been talking about the inauguration forecast up to 28 degrees today and lows in the single digits with those wind
6:22 am
chills that sometimes may be dipped below freezing, and we've seen those below zero wind chills as well, and temperatures across parts of the north. but what's really going to be astounding? tomorrow will be snow along the gulf coast. so we'll be following that here in the bay area. we've been looking forward to getting some rain, and it's not until this weekend, on saturday and sunday that we could see at least a slight chance of some rain here. looking at the 7-day forecast, we are dry to that point and temperatures in the low to mid 60s up through wednesday, even reaching 70 degrees on thursday. and then that rain chance along with the cold front knocks our temperatures back for the weekend as saturday and sunday highs will be in the upper 50s, not only for the inland areas but san francisco as well. laura marcus. all right. thanks, gary. it is 622 right now. today is doctor martin luther king junior day and just ahead on today in the bay, a look at the way many across our nation are honoring

this is today in the bay. good monday morning to you. happy martin luther king jr. day as well i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we want to start with a look at that forecast for you this morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect out there. see the fog sticking around? yes. we can see the low clouds and fog drifting over san francisco, moving across other areas as well as we are going to see some patches of fog, at least for the next couple of hours. and our temperatures are near freezing in some spots. at least some frosty conditions, definitely in napa, as well as in parts of the east bay. livermore. we are dipping to 34 degrees right now. it's 42, in hayward with a light wind. it's all clear and as we go throughout the day, we'll see our temperatures warming up gradually and headed for the 60s nice day, but eventually we're going to see some changes. we'll talk about all of what's ahead for this week coming up in a few minutes. sounds good. thank you.
6:32 am
kari. well, breaking right now, president biden is issuing a last minute set of pardons. this is during his final hours in office. in a statement, he admits these are essentially pre exemptive moves to protect against potential revenge motive prosecutions by president elect trump. the pardons include former chief medical advisor doctor anthony fauci, general mark milley, a former joint chiefs chairman who once called trump a fascist. congressional members who served on the select committee investigating the january 6th insurrection and u.s. capitol and d.c. police who testified to the committee. now, in his statement, president biden called each case an exceptional circumstance and that he's concerned about potential baseless investigations. this morning, donald trump, as we well know, will once again be president of the united states. and scott mcgrew. the inauguration is today, and it is very cold there in d.c. very cold. good morning to you. weathers rough, but
6:33 am
republicans probably warmed by the fact they'll occupy the white house, the house and the senate. a peaceful transition of power today, one of 59 inaugurations of 46 presidents. only one has been marred by violence. president elect trump was at saint john's episcopal church this morning, along with other dignitaries. it's a tradition, regardless of the president's religion. this is the same church, by the way. then president trump had that photo op holding a bible in 2020. a short time from now, the trumps will be greeted at the white house by president biden and first lady jill biden, where the group will have a visit and have tea. in fact, we have brand new video of that. the portico at the white house. the vice president harris second husband, greeted by president biden and first lady. ahead of that tea. everything will be a repeat performance today. of course. president trump was sworn in as president in 2017. his first inaugural address was a departure from past presidents,
6:34 am
noted for its dark imagery, talking about rusted out factories scattered like tombstones and american carnage and the crime and the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential. this american carnage stops right here and stops right now. now, the day after washington saw one of the largest protests in history, with the women's march estimated to be at least a half million strong. when you add in marches in other cities, historians say it may have been the largest single day protest in all of u.s. history. also that week, the world was introduced to sean spicer, who introduced a white house press office whose facts often conflicted with the facts the press was presenting on the first day. over the size of the crowd at the inauguration, this
6:35 am
was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration period, both in person and around the globe. these attempts to lessen the enthusiasm of the inauguration are shameful and wrong. now. that was then. this is now. ucsc professor doctor nolan higdon joins us. nolan, good morning. let's look ahead here. the first few days of the first trump administration. and this is true of many administrations, was a bit disorganized. they had a lot of unfilled positions as well. they seem more organized this time around. yeah. good morning to everyone. yeah i concur, it really seems like donald trump has really prioritized getting the people he wants in the positions he wants so they can hit the ground running in this term. that was a big critique, even from people in his adadministraon of the first term, that they were kind of caught off guard by how lengthy and complex the process was to get the people they want in the positions they want. so it really looks like trump has made an effort to try and rectify
6:36 am
that in his second term. so now that they know what they're doing, trump is by definition a lame duck president. he can't run for reelection, so he's on the clock if he wants to get some of the stuff done. absolutely. this is, you know, by all indications, going to be trump's last term. one thing that's really interesting, though, about trump as a politician and as a lawmaker is he seems to always be campaigning. so even though there's not a campaign to be won, trump likes to run against the opposition and gives speeches like he's campaigning. so i don't anticipate a change in trump's rhetoric. but regardless of his rhetoric, the clk is ticking. the republicans hold the house and the senate just like they did the first time around. they were able to pass that huge tax cut that sunsets through, though soon you think they'll be able to pass it again? i think so, you know, this is always something that unites republicans. these tax cuts. trump has tald fondly about the success of getting that passed in his first term, and it
6:37 am
seems to have been a focal point during the campaign as well. so i think trump and the republicans are going to prioritize that, maybe even over some of the other promises that trump made during this campaign. all right. well, we'll be talking about all of them. doctor higdon will join us again for our 8 a.m. streaming newscast. thanks again for being here, nolan. president biden down to his last hours in the white house. throughout his presidency, he would warn about the threats of populism and nationalism and the threats of another trump presidency, notably at a speech in philadelphia days before the 2022 midterms. in the past few weeks, now that we know there is a trump presidency, biden's been worrying about something different. a new american oligarchy, not just a rich president, but a world run by the very rich, from our social networks to our newspapers and more. biden doesn't name names, but we've watched elon musk alongside trump and big changes from jeff bezos and mark zuckerberg, all of whom will be front row. this morning,
6:38 am
president elect trump says he'll sign 100 executive orders in his first few days of his presidency. some today in front of the crowd, which may include new oil leases, ending support for electric vehicles, ending da in the federal government, and, importantly, changing the status of nonpartisan career federal workers so that they can be fired more easily. a lot to cover. thank you very much, scott. presisident elect also expected to sign an order to crack down on unauthorized immigrants. in california, governor gavin newsom already taking added steps to try to protect immigrants. but some advocates fear it may not be enough in the event of threatened ice raids. we spoke with one san francisco based immigration attorney. he says people should definitely be aware there are steps to take if they're caught up in a detention raid, and that starts with knowing your rights, including the right to remain silent. definitely making them aware of their rights. so in any type of roundup, it's imperative, documented or not, especially if
6:39 am
you're undocumented, to assert your right to remain silent, not sign anything without the presence of an of an attorney. your attorney asked to speak with an attorney before you sign anything and just limit to answering basic identifying questions like name, date of birth, place of birth, but not generally give any other information. because i find that these pretextual stops that are biased take advantage of people's fear with some of the government officials, because people don't know that they have these rights they can assert. he also says the bay area and federal judges here may be more empathetic than immigration authorities in other parts of the country. also, in many cases, provided an immigrant does not have a prior criminal record, the act of deportation will likely be long and drawn out. legal process. we will have nonstop coverage on air, online and from our free nbc bay area app. coverage starts at 7:00
6:40 am
