four decades. because of the harsh, cold weather in d.c, president trump got right to work after officially taking of signing a series of executive orders, which include pulling the u.s. from the paris climate accords, a temporary hiring freeze for federal workers all in pursuit to undo acts, he says, from the previous administration. our sovereignty will be reclaimed, our safety will be restored, the scales of justice will be rebalanced. from this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. at this hour, president trump is in the oval office signing more executive orders. one of those designating cartels as terrorist organizations. another, changing the definition of birthright citizenship. we have team coverage of president trump inauguration from the bay area to washington, d.c. we begin with nbc's susan mcginnis, who is live on capitol hill with a look at the inaugural event. susan. hey, jessica. good

evening. yeah, the events have been going on all day long, and they're going to continue deep into the night here in washington, d.c, the president now in the oval office, he was previously nearby here at the capital one arena signing executive orders. they're now signing more in the oval office. getting started on an ambitious agenda. solemnly swear i, donald john trump, do solemnly swear. president trump retaking power with renewed energy and purpose. congratulations, mr. presisiden. the inaugural address. promising action. the golden age of america begins right now. echoing themes that won him the white house, i will declare a national emergency at our southern border. hitting the key issues that concerned many americans to defeat what was record inflation and rapidly bring down costs and prices. the president signing a series of executive orders, an effort to make good on campaign promises. we will tariff and tax foreign

countries to enrich our citizens. i will also declare a national energy emergency. wewi. president trump also declaring it u.s. policy to recognize two genders, only male and female, and intending to rename the gulf of mexico the gulf of america. and in a possible test of the limits of presidential authority claiming the panama canal will become u.s. territory. we didn't give it to china, we gave it to panama, and we're taking it back. and taking swipes at his predecessor. from this moment on, america's decline is over. but i just want to say, with republicans now in control of the white house and both chambers of congress, the president making his way through the capitol. then at the nearby capital one arena, the president addresses americans who came to washington to witness history. president trump reclaiming the

white house on a day filled with majesty and pageantry in a historic return to power, consists of pennsylvania state. and still to come tonight for three inaugural balls. gia.y. susan. thank you. all right. supporters of president donald trump packed into a bar near san francisco's pacific heights neighborhood to celebrate his return to the presidential office and watch the inauguration. nbc bay area's sergio quintana is live in san francisco tonight, where supporters said much of their excitement centers around the president's ambitious agenda. sergio. and there was a whole lot that was packed into that speech, ranging from immigration to gender identity to even drilling for oil. and while everyone that we talked with who was at this watch party this morning say that they are supporters of the president's agenda, they also said that they do believe that some of what he said was simply rhetoric. at harry's bar in san francisco, one of president donald trump's opening lines. the golden age of

america begins right now was met with resounding applause, along with nearly every other part of the president's second inaugural speech. but those we talked with said of the many priorities the president outlined, they're hoping his primary focus will be on re-energizing the nation's economy. and they understand many of the president's other agenda items will be a lot for many opponents and even some supporters to digest. donald trump is somebody who speaks with some hyperbole. you know, when you listen to him, it's like, really? bill jackson is the new chairman of the san francisco republican party. he says he knows a lot of focus will be on the president's immigration agenda. it's a system jackson thinks even immigrants would agree needs to be overhauled. when 3 million undocumented foreigners stream across the border each year. that depresses wages for people who are hard working americans, who are doing the important, everyday service jobs we have here. and there's no doubt the issue has the president's

spotlight. among the slew of executive orders of president vowed to sign today, orders that will suspend refugee resettlement programs for four months and u.s. asylum programs reinstate the remain in mexico program for migrants trying to enter the u.s. and end the so-called catch and release program, and order immigration and customs to deport criminal aliens and immigrants who may have missed any of their court dates. in total, the president is vowing to sign ten immigration orders today, including some that are expected to be immediately challenged in court. manuel noris is a business owner in the city and also a new member of the local republican party leadership. i'm from mexico, so i know he talks about the immigration, but i think the first one that they need to be worried about is the criminals, the ones that are breaking the law. although president trump has not mentioned anything about reforms to the legal immigration process, his supporters here say they hope that will also be part of his agenda. i hope this administration realizes that immigration is a necessity of

reform. i think he he might have some plans of reforming immigration. and everyone we talked with said that they hope that the new administration does not go after working immigrants, people who they say are contributing to the economy. reporting live in san francisco. i'm sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. sergio. thank you. okay. this is a live look at one of the inaugural balls scheduled for tonight. look at the stage right there. this one is called the liberty ball. country singer jason aldean is expected to perform, as well as nelly and the village people. president trump also expected to speak at that one, as well as the two other balls that he should be attending tonight. earlier today, former president joe biden gave a final wave to the capitol before boarding marine base andrews, where he will give a farewell to his staff. mr. biden pledged to stay active in politics and encouraged them to do the same. mr. biden and mrs. biden then boarded a plane to head to central california for a vacation. but in his final act

as president, mr. biden issued a series of pardons for members of his family, issuing a preemptive pardon for two brothers and a sister, protecting them from potential prosecution. other pardons included doctor anthony fauci and members of the committee that investigated the january 6th attack. you'll remember that back in december, mr. biden pardoned his son hunter, a federal gun and tax charges. well, even as the president was formally taking the oath of office, a new effort to resist some of his agenda was getting underway in the south bay. community leaders came together in san jose today to show a united front against what they called the president's attack against immigrants. nbc bay area's robert honda joins us from san jose with details on their collective message of defiance. the group of politicians, immigration activists and even members of law enforcement sent out a message of community unity. one they point out they've had to put out before. when we fight, we win. when we fight, we win. the chants are familiar. and on

this martin luther king day, the south bay community leaders say it's time for another social movement. with donald trump becoming president again. these policies strip away the dignity and humanity of those who seek safety and opportunity in our country, and everyone recognizes that these type of raids, harassments, tearing families apart are just simply wrong. one young man attending harvard said the incoming preside's planned policies take away opportunity. i've lived here all my life and i got involved years ago because of this pressing issue. immigration strengthens this country, and the rhetoric against our communities needs to change. if the harmful rhetoric were true, i myself wouldn't be here. i wouldn't be at harvard. and they say it's not just immigrants from mexico who will be impacted. santa clara county has always been a welcoming county. my parents are recent immigrants, but my community, the vietnamese american refugee community, came here in the late 70s when the rest of the world

did not want us. the county sheriff undersheriff also pledged support. the only way that we will collaborate with ice is if there is a criminal threat to our community, or if there's any type of criminal charges. but aside from that, we will not be cooperating with ice. other city and county leaders offered up hope to a group that sees the incoming administration as a threat. there is reason to be afraid, but there is also reason to be hopeful. santa clara county is the place you want to be in these turbulent times. the city has your back. our immigrant heritage is core to the identity of our entire population in this city. ortiz says san jose will make its stance for immigrants official with a resolution of support at the city council meeting on february 4th. in san jose, robert honda, nbc, bay area news. and we will continue our coverage of president trump's inauguration throughout the newscast coming up at 530. our political analyst, larry

martin luther king, jr. s georgia church today joined millions across the country who celebrate the life and legacy of the late civil rights leader. now, hundreds attended inside the historic baptist church, while tens of thousands more joined online. this is the 40th observance of the day, celebrating the civil rights icon and his use of nonviolence to push for positive social change. and of course, across the bay area, people also celebrated doctor martin luther

king jr, including in oakland, where several gatherings were held to remember king's legacy. nbc bay area velena jones is in oakland for us. from a day of service to a day of action, community members across oakland are remembering doctor martin luther king's legacy. it's so important that we honor doctor martin luther king jr. and those that stood beside him to really recognize their work and to take what they've done, to take what they've done and take it to the next level. volunteers at higher ground development organized several cleanups and beautification projects, including one at brookfield elementary. this is the group's 14th year working to enhance east oakland communities. what you see here used to be concrete, sunken in four feet of water. kids would play in it and we realized it was not safe. so over the years, it turned into a trickle effect, bringing both neighborhoods to brown and brookfield together, keeping the environment in mind. volunteers with california climate action

spent the day working to restore parts of arroyo viejo park and the rec center. mlk sunol message was that, you know, action starts in the community. if we want to see change, we have to be on the forefront of that change. hundreds gathered in front of oakland city hall for the 11th annual reclaim mlk radical legacy march. it's hosted by the anti-police terror project. the group's co-founder says this year may be the most important time to take action, with president donald trump taking office for a second time the same day that they can expect us in these streets not just today, but tomorrow, next week, next year. and we're clear that when the enemy feels as if they're losing the fight, that's when they strike the hardest, the most vicious, they understand that they're losing, and that's why they put that man in power. i'll be where i want to be. i'll be where i want to be. doctor king's message of

equality. living on in the younger generation and just being at this, this event for mlk is just super, super important because we need to be able to speak our minds, speak our hearts in this day and age where, you know, there are a lot of kids aren't able to do that. a message the group young, gifted and black hopes resonates with everyone, not just today, but every day. we can do anything if we really try. in oakland, velena jones, nbc, bay area news. community leaders in san francisco also came together today to reiterate doctor king's message. the norcal mlk foundation and the san francisco labor council held a labor community breakfast. community and business leaders also gathered at the intercontinental hotel in san francisco. they spoke of the importance of upholding doctor king's values and commitment to service, urging others to continue to stand together in the ongoing fight for civil rights and workers rights. doctor martin luther king felt very strongly about the community and labor.

he also felt that no one could succeed without the other. and we must make sure that our bonds with the community and labor grows stronger than they've ever been before. each year, the event announces the winner of the willie b kennedy civic service award. this year it was given to san francisco reverend and doctor amos brown. the award recognizes someone who embodies the values and vision of doctor king in their lives. well, growing concerns of a possible bird flu pandemic in people. now, a new effort is underway to speed the development of a bird flu vaccine. the department of health and human services awarded nearly $600 million to drug maker moderna. the goal is to fast track an mrna shot that targets the strains of bird flu now circulating in wild birds, poultry and dairy cows. the federal funds are in addition to the 176 million the hhs awarded moderna back in july. doctors say bird flu viruses typically do not infect humans, but there are now someases in people who

had contact with infected animals. well, as we showed you earlier, the inauguration was moved indoors today because of freezing temperatures. now more icy weather is on tap for some of the southern states too. winter storm is expected to spread snow and ice from south texas to northern florida. these are areas that rarely see that kind of weather. in texas, both houston airports announced flight operations would be suspended starting tomorrow in expectation of those hazardous conditions. new orleans could get half a foot of snow. national weather service says some 40 million people have been under some type of weather hazard today, with more than 20 million under a winter storm warning. i want to bring in our meteorologist, jeff ranieri right now. some tough conditions in so much, so much of the of the country. yeah, florida could even get some snow in the panhandle as we head through, which would be so bizarre. yeah. next 72 hours. so cold there. we also have our own chill back here across the west. we do have details on a frost advisory as we move through tomorrow morning, but we did have that wind to contend with today and

with our recent fire concerns. i did want to show you that the strongest of the winds, those have now started to exit most lower elevations here, only five to about 15mph, still clocking some wind gusts at mount saint helena and mount diablo anywhere from 23 to 26mph. but let me showou here by 1130 tonight, only 5 to 10mph throughout the bay area, so no need for concern when it comes to wind tonight. we are on the downward side of that now as we move through tomorrow's forecast. high pressure is going to keep it pretty calm for us. so we' in for a good amount of sunshine coming back in and that's going to allow temperatures to drop. we are talking about some widespread 30s here across the bay area, so plan to have that heaviest jacket out tomorrow morning. inland valleys of the north bay. east bay, south bay included in that frost advisory temperatures ranging 33 to 39 degrees. and don't forget to bring those pets inside. so let's move into what we can expect. and you'll see more than

not will be in the 30s here through the bay area, 38 for the south bay average of 39. peninsula tri-valley down to 35 degrees. also looking at some of those mid 30s in the north bay, san francisco, the one spot with an average here in the low 40s, and the east bay right here at 37. so the chance of some patchy frost as you wake up tomorrow morning on some of the rooftops and also the lawns. then by the afternoon we'll be able to thaw out, so to speak. we've got some mid 60s down here across the south bay over to the east bay. 61 martinez 63, in hayward out to concord, 62 as we move it through the peninsula, 60 in daly city down to palo alto, 63 san francisco staying in the 50s across the marina, then down here to the mission, 62 degrees and up across the north bay. 61 in clear lake, 62 right here in novato. weather really like this as we head all the way into friday's forecast. then hang on for this upcoming weekend. a little bit of a wild ride here. we're going to see this storm

system drop in for some of the coldest air of the season. now, the big problem with this and getting any kind of major rain is it's going to be moving over land, so it's just not able to pick up any pacific moisture. so there's only a spotty chance of maybe a few showers here throughout california. we'll also get some wind 15 to about 30. so it's going to feel blustery again this upcoming saturday and sunday. and we're just going to be missing out on those big rain chances and talk about a slow rain season. san jose last day with a quarter inch or more was way back on december the 24th, where we had 4000/5 in san jose. and since january 1st we've only seen 11 hundredths. the average so far to date for january should be 1.80in. so all cities except for the north bay really starting to fall behind. we got to get some rain on the board and right now no large chances next seven days. again, we're closely monitoring this weekend for
