tv   NBC Bay Area News at 530  NBC  January 20, 2025 5:30pm-6:00pm PST

5:30 pm
obviously, a significant and historic day. and the celebration continues tonight in washington, dc. there was a heavy silicon valley feel to all of this on this inauguration day. the bay area tech giants that were front and center, and what it means for the bay area's influence in this new trump white house. also, our political analyst joining us to talk about some of the promises president trump made today, how his policies will impact immigration, the transgender community and the panama canal. and it is shaping up to be another tense night in southern california. fire crews preparing for more strong winds. the news at 530 starts right now. thanks for joining us. i'm gia vang and i'm raj mathai. this day was filled with pomp and circumstance and a clear message to the country and the world about america's peaceful transition of power. tonight, a change of wardrobe and a different vibe as the
5:31 pm
celebration and the parties begin. in fact, let's go out live to washington, d.c. this is a live look at the commander in chief ball. this is at a convention center out there in washington, one of the many parties and balls tonight to celebrate the 45th and 47th president of the united states. country band rascal flatts will perform along with singer parker mccollum. president trump just left the oval office and is expected to head over to this commander in chief ball. he is expected to speak with the crowd and all the vips who are there. really. it's been a busy first day for the president. started at the u.s. capitol rotunda, where mr. trump and vice president vance took the oath of office. both men surrounded by their friends and family. he got right to work, signing a series of executive orders, among them puing the united states from the paris climate accords, changing the definition of birthright citizenship, and declaring a national emergency along our southern border. we will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow
5:32 pm
ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer. during every single day of the trump administration, i will very simply put america first. the first of the president's picks for his cabinet has been confirmed by unanimous vote. the senate confirmed senator marco rubio as the new secretary of state. for the last several weeks, we've known the silicon valley will have a major influence in this incoming trump white house. and today we saw it firsthand. our local ceos and venture capitalists in attendance, even making speeches. this is a big change. we did not see this at the inaugurations for presidents biden, obama or bush. let's bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman. this was remarkable to see. not necessarily surprising, but remarkable. the ceos of google, meta, apple, tesla all on the stage during the inauguration. the ceos might not be republicans, but they're businessmen, and they want to be part of that inner circle of the
5:33 pm
trump white house. yeah, really remarkable to see the center stage that they took. raj. you know, we've seen ceos at inaugurations before. we've seen wealthy people at these things before. but such a concentration from one industry and from one geographic area, silicon valley, like you said, because a lot of today was about tech, which is why we saw tim cook, jeff bezos, sundar pichai and other tech executives placed closely behind president trump, who during his inaugural address even gave a direct shout out to the business of tech billionaire elon musk. and we will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching american astronauts to plant the stars and stripes on the planet mars. one of many tech leaders who donated millions to trump's campaign. there's clearly seeking an environment with as little regulation as possible, all hoping their investment will lead to direct access to the
5:34 pm
white house, much to the concern of those who track ethics in the tech industry. because the concentration of power in just a few people's hands is generally antithetical to a functioning democracy. but some ceos call this a new opportunity for growth in tech. let's accelerate the speed to innovation, and let's empower the smartest people in the country. doctor benjamin harvey runs an ai company and used to work in government. he says politics and tech can be partners. we're seeing these individuals really come in with the idea of how do we start to empower the federal government to be able to simplify as well as accelerate how innovation is actually happening. there is a belief that this administration will let ai companies develop with fewer restrictions. that's what they want, and it could benefit both silicon valley and washington. we talk about ai. sam altman was also there, not quite in the front stage, but he was there today as well. we've
5:35 pm
seen this scott a few times now. elon musk very excited when he's on stage with president trump. here he is today. some elections are, you know, important. some are not. but but this one, this one, this one really mattered. and i just want to say thank you for making it happen. thank you. thank you. my heart goes out to you. yeah. the gesture or salute causing some raised eyebrows. not sure what his intent was, but we do know this. he might be the most powerful person in the country aside from president trump right now. yeah, we have a fairly good idea of what that was. raj. let's be honest, it lit up social media, and it's one of those things that it's just he cannot stop taking the attention away from the boss, from donald trump, in whatever way he's going to do it. and an otherwise good speech, an otherwise thoughtful speech. and talking about a nazi salute, a
5:36 pm
fascist gesture. i just don't understand why he feels it necessary to do something like that and really take the spotlight in such a negative way, and i'm guessing if he hasn't already, he will be on x explaining it. or maybe not, but he's certainly not going to shy away from anything in the spotlight, right? shai and elon musk do not go hand in hand. thank you scott. gia. well guys, a lot of moments today. a lot of policy talk as well. as we've mentioned his inauguration speech today, president trump announced an executive order declaring a national emergency at the southern border. and part of the order includes an end to what's called the catch and release program, where migrants awaiting immigration hearings are allowed to remain in the united states. so joining us now is our political analyst, larry gerston. so, larry, how significant is this and how many californians will be impacted? let's start with the fact that we've got 12 million undocumented right now in the united states, okay, 1.8 million of those folks are right here in california. we've got 3.6 million of those undocumented waiting for hearings. mind you,
5:37 pm
these hearings right now are taking an average of between 6 and 8 years before they go before a judge. okay. so they're running around the country doing whatever they're doing. of those 3.6 million, it's a good estimate that about 500,000 are right here in california. somewhere around that, that amount.o we're talking about a large part of this population. and when those people go. we can think about what may happen to their families. we can think about what may happen to the economy, given that they have these kinds of jobs in many cases that other people won't have. so we're talking about a major change, not only in the country, but especially right here in california, a huge chunk of the population, for sure. okay, so president trump also talked about he would adopt a policy that would only recognize two genders, male and female. so what are the implications of that? the transgender issue is big these days, very big in california. i think there are at least three things that we could talk about that could be impacted. first of all, the
5:38 pm
military, you realize that in the military, if someone's going through gender change, the military will help those folks out. forget it. it's going to be gone. what about the schools? there are so many kids who go to the schools because where they're protected and they they want to talk about this, get counseling. the guess is here is that if the president says no more aid, that means no more aid to those schools. okay. so that's an impact. and then finally, we want to think about something like medi-cal and other state programs. okay. right now medi-cal allows transgender funds, transgender changes. well, that aid will be cut off as well. you're talking about, again, this president, he calls himself a disrupter. well, he's disrupting. and these could be massive changes now. now as we talked about earlier tonight there will be lawsuits and lots of them. so i think we can expect that in this issue among others. yeah, a lot of those groups have been watching this closely for many, many months. all right. letet's turn now to e panama canal. he mentioned that as well. president trump today claimed that the u.s. is charged unfairly for canal transit. and then he also implied the chinese
5:39 pm
share the responsibility because they run ports on either side of the canal. and then he also said the u.s. needs to take back the canal. so what do you make of this? a lot, a lot, especially for the president, who doesn't want to get involved in any kind of military action. let's walk through this. first of all, american ships are about 70% military and commercial. about 70% of the ships that go through. so we pay the lion's share. but what's charged to us is the same that's charged to everybody else. and by the way, let's talk about the chinese for a second. the chinese run the ports. the chinese don't run the businesses in terms of charging what's going on. that's a panamanian corporation that's run by panamanians. so the implication there, i think is a bit misleading. but nonetheless, here you've got a situation. if the president says, i want you to do what i want, okay, cut the funds, cut the charges, and they don't. if not, we'll deal with it. he's talking about taking back the panama canal. well, you're talking about a military issue here and the potential for this country to get involved abroad with. no, no. who knows
5:40 pm
how many thousands of people? again, a major change. so this president today is signing dozens of executive orders. many of them will not turn out to be okay courtesy of the courts. but meanwhile we're talking about major changes one after another. i tell you something. it catches your breath. just just to try to keep up with it. oh for sure. all right. larry gerston, thank you so much. always appreciate you. and we will of course, have more coverage of today's inauguration. in our 6 p.m. newscast, we'll talk with a bay area woman who is watching closely along with others, as larry and i were talking about, about president trump's policies impacting the transgender community. our other headlines tonight. the fight is far from over. it's been nearly two weeks since the start of the deadly wildfires down in l.a. county. firefighters are now gaining ground. it comes after a weekend of favorable weather conditions. the eaton fire near pasadena and altadena is now 87% contained. the palisades fire 59% contained. however, even as
5:41 pm
communities are starting to rebuild, tens of thousands of people remain under evacuation orders. unable to go home, fire officials are preparing for another round of extreme winds. tonight. we are living with friends. we've staying with friends house and we had no clothes. i mean, that particular day i was at work and i had the clothes on my back. and luckily we have lots of good friends and they've been helping us and shopping at marshalls. et cetera. et cetera. so. but we'd like to see the house. it is a challenge for so many people. the wildfires have killed at least 27 people and destroyed more than 14,000 structures. many of those structures, of course, are homes. up next, cautious optimism as a cease fire between israel and hamas is working for now, the latest from the middle east as hostages are being released. i'm chief

drones or jets. how long will this last? nobody really knows. but for now, the focus is to take it an hour at a time, a day at a time. those hostages were released and reunited with their families, and very emotional pictures beamed around the world. the medical staff here knew how to prepare, given that they've been through this before, back in november 2023. but they didn't know exactly what to expect and what we saw, certainly at a distance and on the surface, is that these women were doing relatively well on their feet. smiling. of course, there will be further tests done. there are psychological implications here. after so much time in captivity. it is complex, it is delicate, and it will surely be of great concern for their families and for the medical staff. emily, one of the hostages, 28 years old, also a british citizen. she was seen with a big smile on her face, her hand bandaged after having lost two fingers when she was shot on october 7th, the day she

5:47 pm
8 p.m. on thursday. and that's just for some on and off wind gusts we could see up in the mountains, but again, the worst of those very strong winds through early tomorrow afternoon. so here's a look at the forecast. 11 p.m. tonight. notice the mountains here san bernardino mountains all the way over to the coastline and the palisades. we will see wind gusts 50 plus miles per hour. lower elevations 25 to maybe 50mph. and we would stay with that wind through tomorrow morning. and then eventually we would start to see that get a little bit better here by late tomorrow evening. and then some on and off gusts. not as brutal, but still keeping fire danger high right there through thursday's forecast. now for us today we did have that wind kind of popping throughout the early morning and through the day. most of that wind is now calmed down, just five to about 15mph for most lower elevations. i still got some gusts up here at mount saint helena to 21, but all of that wind calming down through tonight, at least across
5:48 pm
the bay area. morning temperatures. i got to tell you, make sure to bring that heaviest jacket tomorrow. layer it up. it really does help to trap some pockets of heat in your body. so you're going to be able to battle this chill, and you're going to be able to get out the door comfortably just knowing that, because we're looking at an average here, 38 in the south bay, 39 peninsula, tri-valley, 35 also coming in with some 30s over the east bay and the north bay with that chance of some patchy frost. but let's get you the specific numbers here for your city or close to where you're at, and you'll see up towards santa rosa. 33 for the morning. low 32, fairfield 32, brentwood 35. in livermore, down there towards morgan hill 36. downtown san jose right there at 40 and redwood city at 39. so it's not just a couple spots getting into the 30s. it's several locations. so just be ready for that as we head through the afternoon. those afternoon temperatures are going to feel really good here. we'll get into the 50s and low 60s and lots of sunshine. so some time to just kind of warm up a little bit there through the early

afternoon. but by the time we get to this weekend, saturday and sunday, this cold system is going to be dropping in with even chillier air than what we're looking at tomorrow morning. a little bit of wind, only a slight chance of a spotty shower. and really, the large thing we're seeing right now, unfortunately, is the snow pack continuing to drop. central sierra that includes lake tahoe. only 74% of average and southern sierra 54. so no major storm the next seven days. we're just looking at a 20% chance as we head through this upcoming saturday. i've updated that just to kind of give you a better idea of where we're sitting on that front, we'll get more looks at this forecast, of course, coming up at 6 p.m. tonight is that chance of showers moving south at any point? it does look like it could get to southern california. it's not the, you know, moderate totals they'd like to see, but there certainly could be some raindrops, which would be good for that would be great news. thank you jeff. up next, an mlk day tradition. it
