"early today" starts right now. hi there, glad you're with me this morning. i'm frances rivera. it is day three of the trump administration, and the president is reshaping the government at break neck speed. the administration has taken the final steps to dismantle federal dei programs, putting all diversity, equity and inclusion staff on paid leave, starting today. and agencies were directed to put together plans to lay them off. meanwhile, the president is defending his decision to issue sweeping pardons in the january 6th attack. nbc's chris pollone joins me now. the president is getting push back from even his own party. >> reporter: frances, that's right. good morning. critics of these pardons believe that the president went too far. there are concerns that extremist groups could be emboldened. leaders of the proud boys and oath keepers militia were released from prison.

both men were convicted of seditious conspiracy and faced the longest sentences. and the qanon shaman thanked president trump online and said he's going to buy some guns. a pardon also went to andrew taake who had pled guilty to attacking officers with bear spray and a whip. peter alexander asked president trump about his decision to pardon more than 400 people who assaulted police officers. >> they've served years in jail, and murderers don't even go to jail in this country. and we had 1500, we have 16 under review, as you know. we commuted about 16 of them. because it looks like they could have done things that were not acceptable for a full pardon. >> reporter: senator lisa murkowski is among the republicans criticizing the pardons. she says she fears what message this is sending to the men and women who protected the lawmakers. form d.c. police officer,

michael fanone went to court yesterday to seek protective orders against five men who pleaded guilty to assaulting him. he says he feels betrayed by his country. president trump continuing his broad actions on immigration. the department of homeland security announcing the end to the policy that restricted i.c.e. agents' ability to arrest undocumented immigrants at sensitive locations like schools, hospitals and houses of worship. but backlash to his sweeping proposal is growing. the episcopal bishop of washington making a direct appeal to the president during a prayer service yesterday. >> i ask you to have mercy, mr. president, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away. and that you help those who are fleeing war zones and persecution. our god teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger. >> at least 24 blue states are

already suing over trump's attempt to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants. senators were handed new troubling allegations about trump's pick for defense secretary. they received an affidavit from his sister-in-law regarding his ex-wife samantha. she says his behavior made his ex-wife fear for her safety during their marriage. danielle hegseth says she personally observed aggressive and erratic behavior over many years. a lawyer for hegseth dismissed the allegations saying in the divorce samantha signed documents saying there was no abuse. nbc news reached out to samantha hegseth. in an e-mail, she says there was no physical abuse in my marriage. she insisted that she does not want to comment further about her ex-husband. israel's far-right minister of security has resigned in protest over the israel-hamas cease-fire. ben-gvir, the jewish power party

settlers and settlements against iran-backed militants. they say iran is trying to send weapons or money to operations in the west bank. this operation is called iron wall and follow as week of tension where israeli forces carried out other raids where freedom of movement of palestinians have increasingly been more and more restricted. and, where also, violent israeli settlers carried out other kinds of raids, for instance, by setting fire to vehicles and buildings, just as president trump announced he was going to lift sanctions against this kind of violent israeli settlers. this also comes two days after the first israeli hostages were released in gaza, raising fears violence in the west bank s continues, it may affect the ongoing cease-fire, which is already very fragile, frances.

>> claudio, thank you. a possible development in the burglaries of pro athletes' homes. four chilean nationals have been charged in ohio with a psible link to the break-in at the home of cincinnati bengals' qb joe burrow last month. according to documents, a search of the suspects' suv found an old lsu shirt and hat believed to have been stolen. records show burrow's home was the only multi-million dollar home burglarized on that date in that county. burrow did not respond to nbc news' request for comment. turning to southern california, where new fires cropped up tuesday, as santa ana winds whipped across that already-charred region. the friars fire near san diego threatened a mall and several homes, prompting evacuations, but fire crews were able to get it under control quickly. farther north, the lilac fire tore through 85 acres, forcing

evacuation orders. it's now 50% contained. near los angeles, some families were finally able to return to see what's left of their homes after the devastating fires leveleden tire neighborhoods. the death toll has risen to 28. and now a rare and dangerous winter storm sweeping the south. parts of louisiana saw as much as 10 inches of snow. parts of central florida got up to 8 inches, and 5 inches fell outside of houston. there were nearly 170 snow-related accidents in the houston area. and chaos in the air as well. nearly 2200 flights were canceled. authorities expect at t least lr
