as federal workers are put on leave, the trump administration issuing a new order to get rid of all diversity, equity and inclusion roles. we're live in washington with what this means for thousands of employees. if i were to lose my parents to deportation, my whole world would fall apart. immigration anxiety being felt across the bay area. the new measures being taken to protect migrants in the east bay. and taking legal action after a tragic death last year at a bart station. the new lawsuit, just filed by a san francisco family. this is today in the bay. and good morning to you on this wednesday. thanks for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. we're happy you're here. better bundle up. if you're headed out the door, just sit tight for just a little bit. you
6:01 am
want to hear cynthia pimentel's forecast for today? it's a frost advisory in many parts, right? yeah. and you're going to sit tight at the end of your bed, just huddled in that blanket contemplating this morning's temperatures. we look at 27 right now in boulder creek, 29 in danville, fairfield and the 30s up there for the north bay. subfreezing numbers putting us under a freeze warning there in the north bay. the rest of us sitting under that frost advisory until about 10:00 this morning. so just be careful on the roadways, too. there could be just some frost there that you didn't see and cause a little bit of a slippery situation after that. yes, we do go into a sunny and warm afternoon today and tomorrow, but the weekend looks different. we are looking at temperatures dropping and also a chance of getting some more rain in here throughout the state. so we'll walk you through that coming up in the full forecast in just a few minutes. back to you. sounds good. we'll check back with you. well, president donald trump making major moves during his first few days in office today. federal employees bracing for the impact following trump's signing of a new executive

order. and this comes as the president defends his decision to pardon january 6th. convicts and lawyers now gearing up to defend his attempt to end birthright citizenship in court. we have team coverage from coast to coast. first, let's get to today in the bay's chris pollone. he's in washington, dc. and chris, president trump carrying out the promises that he made on that campaign trail right out of the gate. yeah. lauren. marcus. good morning. he's moving swiftly, to say the least, the white house trying to deliver on some of these top promises that it has made over the past few months, and doing a lot of it in the early days of the administration. today, some federal employees are being told to stay home and prepare to be fired. a new trump administration memo released overnight says people who work in government diversity, equity and inclusion offices are being notified. they are being placed on paid administrative leave, effective immediately. department heads now ordered to draw up plans by the end of the month to fire those workers. as president trump rolls back biden

era attempts to diversify the federal workforce. he calls it discrimination. our country is going to be based on merit. it comes as the president faces increasing backlash for pardoning all of the january 6th capitol riot convicts, including those who assaulted police officers. this was the vice president ten days ago. if you committed violence on that day, obviously you shouldn't be pardoned. mr. trump disagrees. these people have served years of jail and their lives have been ruined. former dc police officer michael fanone, who was beaten and shocked with a taser by the mob that day, calls it the ultimate betrayal. they almost killed me on january 6th and now they're free. some in the president's party struggling to defend the move. it was surprising to me that it was a blanket pardon. now i'm going through the details. monday, the president also moved to end birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants, a right guaranteed by the constitution. people have wanted to do this for decades. now, at least 24 states and
6:04 am
other advocacy groups have already sued to block the move, and a federal judge in seattle has already scheduled a hearing for tomorrow to hear the first legal challenge to president trump's executive order banning birthright citizenship. marcus and laura, back to you. all right. chris pollone in washington. chris. thank you. now, in just a few hours, leaders in the east bay will try to offer protections for undocumented immigrants at risk of those mass deportations. president trump is promising today in the bay's bob redell joining us live this morning. and, bob, the new administration now allowing ice officers to go into schools and even churches. correct. good morning to you, marcus. under president biden, ice officers were not allowed to arrest people in so-called sensitive areas, which includes schools, churches, daycare facilities and health care facilities. but last night. yesterday, i should say president trump lifted those restrictions. and ice officers can now apprehend people in those locations. which means
6:05 am
under this new policy, ice officers can make arrests pretty much anywhere in public. these changes are frightening and unnerving for our friends in the migrant communities. last night, at a prayer vigil in the south bay, santa clara county clergy and the community members there, they gathered to show support amid the anti-immigration policies put forth by the new trump administration to send a message of unity and solidarity. faith leaders say they want migrants to know that they can rely on them for anything they may need. so let us ratchet ourselves up a bit instead of being afraid. if we can lean into this community, lean into the god of presence, and find courage and hope for this in every journey. as we strive to be that beloved community that we can be tonight and all our nights. amen. later this morning in oakland, leaders from that city, the county, the state

federal government along with oakland unified and nonprofit community leaders, they will hold a news conference to announce resources for immigrant families. that includes a hotline and a website. reporting live. bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you. 605 right now and new this morning, new legal action against bard filed by the relatives of a woman allegedly pushed to her death from a platform last july. investigators say a transient pushed 74 year old corazon dandan to the tracks as the train was approaching. her surviving nephew and six siblings plan to announce a new lawsuit this morning. the suit claims bart is liable, suggesting the suspect was already banned from riding bart over repeated fare jumping. we did reach out to the transit agency this morning for comment, and we are still awaiting a response. one person is in the hospital. seven more are looking for temporary housing after a fierce fire in the south bay

apartment complex. now, this happened last night on union avenue. this is near the pruneyard shopping center in campbell. firefighters say that three people were rescued and one suffered smoke inhalation. now, at one point, a stairway collapsed, briefly trapping first responders on the second floor. four apartments, a total loss. two more sustained damage. firefighters also rescued also rescued a dog, but they say that a cat did not survive. the cause of that fire is not yet known. a new fire in southern california is prompting evacuation warnings. cal fire says it broke out yesterday afternoon near the santa ana river in riverside county, about three miles from riverside municipal airport. it's burned about 40 acres. so far, it is 40% contained. those new fires broke out as crews in l.a. county continue to fight the pacific palisades and eaton fires. palisades fire is currently 65% contained. the eaton fire in the pasadena area is now 89% contained. some evacuation warnings remain in
6:08 am
place in both fire zones. let's check in with cinthia pimentel this morning. i know you've been tracking those conditions down there. the flag warning remains into effect. we know how long this is going to last today and into tomorrow. this system just doesn't want to break. so we have some good days, and we have some days that are a bit more tricky. with the winds and the low humidities and the situation down there. so that red flag warning continuing not only for the mountains, but the valleys and even stretching out there towards the coast of orange county and around the la area. so that will be as we go on into our thursday. let's watch the winds here as we go on into the afternoon. we still see them coming offshore. they're through the fire areas continuing on tonight, and a critical time to watch will be as we go on into tomorrow morning. we see those gusts get even higher, upwards of 50, maybe even 60 miles an hour. as we go on and look at the situation, the better news that i could offer with this is that as we go on into the weekend, we're going to see some moisture coming in, the temperatures also dropping throughout the state, and the
6:09 am
chance of rain there as we go on into saturday and sunday. with that low pressure swinging further south, it's not going to be impressive totals as we go on and talk about this, but model run after model run, we'll see how much they could get maybe a third of an inch, but that could be some trouble as we see the burn scar areas dealing with that incoming rainfall. so we'll talk about that as the event gets closer as well. let's go on and talk about this crash in the east bay westbound highway four around pittsburgh. we see that slow down there. they have moved over to the right hand side. so that should be in the clearing stages there. we'll watch if the sensors pick up on anything else. sensors picking up on some heavy traffic. southbound 880. making your way through san lorenzo is going to be tricky around hesperian. there was that two, two crashes that we're looking at and but then once you make it down further on into the fremont area, you should be good to go the rest of the bay area commute up from morgan hill into san jose. slow, but no crashes to report of. back to you. thanks, cynthia. 609 right now.

his private life from 1996 through 2011, including phone hacking, surveillance and misuse of private information. well, trending this morning a story that proves not all that glitters remains intact. some of the olympic medals handed out to athletes in paris are said to be losing their shine. more than 100 athletes have returned them, saying they're already showing signs of rust and deterioration. they're asking for the medals to be repaired or replaced. experts believe the problem appears to be last minute change to the varnish used to protect them. it was just a failure to properly test this particular varnish to see how it holds up. the tarnish appears to be most apparent on the bronze medals, according to the international olympic committee. they're made from a combo of copper, tin and zinc. experts say that makes them more susceptible to moisture and sweat. so when you're no longer going for the gold, you're going
6:18 am
for the tin, right? i guess there's a lot of those athletes keeping, you know, up and, you know, away. yeah, i guess so. well, trending also as well, if you can't make it to thailand to see the pygmy hippo mudang, don't worry. you can now see a pygmy hippo a little bit closer to home. yeah. so a zoo over in central virginia offering a new one of a kind behind the scenes adventures for those visitors out there. the papa pygmy hippo experience. starting today, people can get an up close and personal encounter with the endangered pygmy hippo. and you will be poppy and mothers the mother there. iris. you can actually wade into the water near the two with a safe bear between the two as you feed them. the zoo said that those experiences is for 30 minutes and it's not cheap, $175 per person. wow, what an experience. i don't know about waiting in the green water, but you know, i feed poppy a little something. i mean, if you got $175 to spend, you know, and you got to go to

6:20 am
for the weekend. we are stopping it here for saturday. seeing some of the models, painting some fresh sierra snow and the chance of some rain. but where that hits right now, it continues to be east and south of the bay area and further treking down into parts of southern california where they have just been bone dry, barely receiving any rain for this water season. we can see that change as we go on into saturday and sunday. maybe a third of an inch of rain if we're lucky to squeeze that out of the system. but then it goes back to normal where we see the dry, dry days continuing. here we paint the picture for our bay area totals. notice that most of it will stay east and maybe south into parts of fairfield and down into morgan hill, but really not much of a rain situation, just some cooler numbers that will be headed our way into the sierra we go. it's not going to be as exciting there as we're used to at this time of the year, but 1 to 2in of some fresh powder is always a welcome sight. anything to add to our water supply as we go on and take a look at the

next seven days in our inland valleys, the frosty mornings are going to continue, but after that we get into a lot of sunshine. so it's winter coat in the morning, sunglasses and short sleeves for the afternoon. but here is where that front starts to drop through and we look at those numbers taking a hit into the weekend. some more coats are going to be needed there, and the pattern just takes a little bit of a rebound as we go on into next week. san francisco and along the peninsula. we'll see the nice days for today and tomorrow. cooler and turning breezier as we go on into the weekend and then getting into next week. seeing those numbers and the sunshine return. let's go over to the traffic situation right now. i would not want to be in this. as we look at the bay bridge toll plaza, heavy traffic there, aside from the cold numbers, bring up those heaters. we are looking at that drive time sitting there through the bay bridge, about a 15 minute ride, the richmond-san rafael bridge also piling up, but not bad. about ten minutes to get you into marin county. the one that continues to be a little bit of a situation is right

might just want to sell your lot and move, rebuild a house, or buy a house someplace else. so what does that mean for your insurance payout? there are laws to protect you in california. one of them is that the insurance carrier has to give you the same settlement. if a you rebuild your home where it is, b, you rebuild your home somewhere else, or three if you purchase another home. now, if you were lucky enough to have another house or you're just going to go move in with someone else, sussman says, that might complicate your insurance payou, because, again, insurance policies are designed to put you back where you were, which is in a house not with cash in the bank. so you might be penalized if you do not rebuild, replace or repurchase. sussman says talk with your insurance company about your options. if you ever find yourself in the shoes of the la fire victims, sussman says, there's no reason to rush. you really do want to take a little bit of time to decide, because this is a huge decision. we have an open invitation for

6:38 am
causes of homelessness? how can we better use our resources and our programs to address not only those causes, but provide the resources that people need to exit homelessness and become housed? now, all communities are required to conduct a point in time count every two years. sunnyvale is also going to be doing their count this morning. and in the last count, santa clara county had more than 9900 people living on the streets or in temporary shelters, which is the highest out of all nine bay area counties. as i mentioned, the mayor is now here addressing volunteers and they will be going out. they have been instructed not to wake anybody up, but they do it in the early mornings before people start moving around. and anybody who does not want to answer the survey doesn't have to, but surely it's in their best interest to do that, because it will help tailor those resources to make the most impact in san jose. kris sanchez today in the bay. most definitely. we'll continue to follow. thank you

metallic taste in my mouth that does not go away. health experts also say there's been no surge in cases of fire related health issues. vistra executives attended yesterday's meeting and issued an apology. well, happening now. the gulf coast has seen historic snowfall. new orleans public schools there closed today and tomorw. this is all due to a record amount of snow. parts of louisiana seen more than ten inches of snow. bourbon street even blanketed with fresh snow down there. now the snow storm caused widespread disruption to transportation. dadaily routes. roads becoming impassable. flights there delayed or even canceled. businesses were also closed. forecaster cinthia pimentel of course, following allf that for us. look, i know when you're not used to stuff like that, it's like it's fun. but then when it's time to get around, not so easy. when it's serious business. yeah, that's where it can cause some trouble. this is a once in a generation kind of storm. last time, marcus, that lafayette, louisiana got any rainfall was 60, 19, 63 over
6:42 am
2.5in yesterday. and into the totals that we're tracking now, over 9.5in. so that continues for new orleans. texas also getting some snow as far south as houston and into parts of florida as well. so definitely a situation that we're going to contue to keep an eye on as far as the impacts go. and you might be wondering, well, why is this happening? well, as the arctic starts to warm up, we get a little bit of a wobble in that jet stream. it becomes weaker and it's more prone to some extreme behaviors further dropping down those cold numbers into the south. so as far as the highs go, still in those 20s and 30s, look at miami 64 degrees. we're looking at those snow showers and the rain starting to push on east. so here in the west coast we're doing much better for our high 60s and some 70s. so that is really dangerous weather as we continue to track it for the rest of the country. it does look better though, as we go on into tomorrow and into the weekend, so we'll keep
6:43 am
following that. i did want to go to the roads. now there are some issues popping up. we go over to the peninsula now approaching san francisco, right there through a coma crash northbound 280. i think there was a samtrans bus involved in this. so just check on that. and maybe that's the bus that you take to work. might be delayed this morning over on into the altamont pass area, tracey hills. there is some police escort situations going on because of some issues this morning. so the westbound direction is going to be heavy there this morning along parts of 880 southbound. that issue continues right after you pass san leon, san leandro into san lorenzo. the two crashes there. back to you. all right. thanks, cynthia. an inspiring response to the destructive l.a. county wildfires coming up next. the way one simple social media post led to a powerful moment with moms helping moms. plus,

6:49 am
this breaks down. if you have a standard plan without commercials or without ads, which is now 1549. that will go up $2.50 to 17.99. now, the cheaper ad supported plan, now 6.99 goes up $1 to 7.99. and the premium plan will increase $2 from 22.99 to 24.99. and this all follows recent price increases in international markets. netflix says it also plans to raise most of its membership plans in canada, portugal and argentina. now, the company is not alone in raising its prices. consumers have faced a series of hikes across major streaming services, including netflix competitors. so later this morning on the today show, they'll dive more into why these hikes are worth it for millions of netflix subscribers. they're adding all of this live programing. they think that's one of the things that's really driving it, and i think you're
6:50 am
going to see more of that. they even had a christmas football game, right. so they had an nfl event. so to pay for all of that live programing, they're going to have us pay a little more. a lot of people tuned in to that. now netflix has also been cracking down on password aware you have the option to add extra members to your account, but the price of that too will go up, so that currently sits at 7.99 for ad supported plans. that will go up a dollar, but your extra members won't see a price change. now, all of this appears to be paying off for netflix as part of that fourth quarter earnings report reported 19 million new subscribers. and so now netflix has over 300 million subscribers. those are just kind of astonishing numbers. netflix sto soared after those reports, continues to do well this morning. marcus and laura. yeah, a friend of mine was talking about that. he posted it online. like how it soared overnight. so, yeah, they're getting more money. all right. more money. thanks, ginger. well, happening today, a

first look at one of san francisco's biggest annual events. this year's chinese new year parade. the lunar new year is one week from today. and that parade and fair take place the weekend of february 15th and 16th. now at noon, leaders today they're going to lay out what to expect and introduce this year's grand marshal, actress joan chen and new san francisco mayor daniel laurie already being named an honorary marshal. all right, so a few weeks out for that. hopefully we're going to have clear skies for that. we do have some rain on the way. we do for this weekend. not very impressive. what we are talking about is the dangerous cold this morning. but check this out. dublin camera. absolutely beautiful. that sunrise coming in. i hope you'retaying warm cranking up those heaters as we go on, and take a look at subfreezing numbers out there in the tri-valley, 32 in pleasanton right now, as well as in south san jose. but the 20s are on the

map right now 29, in danville, fairfield, sonoma, those low 30s up there in the north bay, putting them under a freeze warning while the rest of us sit under a frost advisory until about 10 a.m. and then we start to warm up from there. a nice day, not only today, but into tomorrow. we're looking at possible 70s on the map for january. that is very impressive. it continues on into our thursday to where we'll feel those mild numbers, but then not so fast, though, as we go on into friday and the weekend with the chance of seeing some rain showers and the numbers taking a hit. so we go on and take a look at this long range outlook going on into friday, saturday, sunday we see the low dropping, moving that stubborn high pressure out of the way for just a second. so it will bring a chance of seeing some showers here in the bay area and down into southern california, and a chance of some light dusting through the sierra, so the rain could be really helpful for the fire crews that continue to battle the fires down there. right now,
6:53 am
it doesn't look like much of an impact will be had on the debris flow down there, but we'll continue to watch it as we go on into the weekend, of course. see where those chances of rain here for the bay area, sacramento valley. very trace amounts, barely making a dent here, but we go on into southern california. that third of an inch of rain for the weekend is actually way more than they've had this entire rain season since we started back in october. so we'll watch that and see how the models play out, and just how much rain could be coming down into socal, san francisco and the peninsula. over the next couple of days. we'll enjoy the mild weather while we have it today and tomorrow. watch the numbers cool down into the weekend, possibly even getting a little bit more breezy as that low starts to approach the area. our inland valley will see some nice days today after the cold morning, and then drop those numbers down as we go on into the weekend, and then rebounding once again to the nice weather as we go on into our next workweek. back to you. thanks so much, cynthia.
