good wednesday morning. the south digging out from an unprecedented snowstorm. >> while much of the country is waking up to record cold. good morning, it is january 22nd. this is "today." winter wonderland. >> snow angels in houston, that's -- >> the south blanketed by a once-in-a-lifetime snowstorm. nearly a foot in new orleans. and whiling up in beach towns across the gulf. leading to a rare snowday. dangerous driving conditions and thousands of canceled flights. and nationwide, 160 million people now filly in the grip of a record-shattering deep freeze with temperatures as low as 40 below. al has the full forecast straight ahead. pardon pushback. president trump under fire from both sides of the aisle this morning over his decision to clear nearly everyone who took part in the january 6th insurrection.

this rare snowstorm and brutal cold being felt across much of the country. >> we have a live look we want to show you. folks, that is myrtle beach, south carolina, where snow now covering the sand. >> that is not a sight you see every day. and also snowball fights and sledding in new orleans. some parts of that city got a foot of snow. the storm dumped snow from texas to florida. 9 inches in milton, florida. 7.5 inches in alabama. 3 inches in houston. >> lots of snow days down south while folks are digging out there. the rest of the country staying in because of the dangerously cold temperatures. this is today's forecast. you can see the frigid temps from coast to coast. arizona, yes, arizona 10 degrees. negative 7 in texas. negative 13 in kansas.

>> well, we've got everything you need to know to start your day, including, of course, al's forecast on when we might see a little relief. priscilla thompson is in texas this morning. hi, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. it is a very cold 20 degrees here right now. as you can see, still a lot of snow here. some did melt yesterday, though, so i want to show you what we're dealing with here. take a look at my feet. you hear the crunching. it is ice, all ice. that is what officials are really concerned about. it's why they're urging people to stay home, continue to stay off of the roads, because it is this ice that they're worried about, people slipping and sliding around on the roads. this morning, snow and dangerous cold still has much of the south in an icy grip. rare blizzard conditions blasting louisiana, trapping this semi truck. the storm also dumping a record breaking 10 inches of snow in parts of the state, covering

palm trees and closing highways and causing a rare sight in new orleans. its iconic bourbon street blanketed in snow, like much of the gulf coast from mississippi to alabama. and no sunshine in parts of northern florida, including pensacola where sandy shorelines transformed into snow covered beaches. >> we're not used to walking in a winter wonderland here in florida. >> reporter: in texas, the houston area getting as much as 4 inches of snow. >> snow angels in houston? that's -- >> unheard of. >> reporter: after a 2021 winter storm left residents without power for days, many there hoping the grit will keep heaters running and pipes from bursting. >> are we preparing for like a one-day storm or are we about to not have water for a week? >> reporter: airports back up and running today after the harsh winter weather caused thousands of cancellations and delays tuesday. but officials urging drivers not

to hit the road just yet. >> we're not done yet. this incident is not over yet. we've got to wait just a little bit longer. >> reporter: and hunkering down at home may not be so bad. for many houstonians, including the police and fire departments, a rare chance to enjoy a taste of winter in their own backyard. and the mayor here in houston has said this 24 hours is likely to be the most dangerous because of those road conditions. but there is good news. originally, temperatures were projected to be below freezing, but now it looks like it'll be in the 40s today. once that sun comes out, there is a good chance we're going to start to see a lot of this start to melt. savannah. >> priscilla, thank you very much. as we said in many places where it is not snowy, it is still brutally cold. the arctic air and dangerous windchills combining to break a number of record lows, with temperatures dipping even lower this morning.

maggie vespa joins us from chicago where it is already in the single digits. feels much colder there. >> reporter: craig, good morning. yeah, in a word, it is absolutely brutal out here. the temperature this morning, 6 degrees. the windchill clocking in at negative 12. there is a sheet of ice under my feet. i'm not as brave as priscilla. i'm not taking a single step. we've also got snow and ice just sitting here frozen. giant chunks of them along lake michigan. for people saying, news flash, it gets cold in chicago, you're right. but this, even for chicagoans, has been extreme this week. hundreds of area schools closing yesterday just because of the cold. windchill yesterday bottoming out at negative 25. amtrak had to cancel trains. flights were canceled at o'hare airport due to the cold. officials were pleading with people who commute outside to try and limit that as much as possible, saying frostbite can kick in in conditions like this in as little as 20 to 30 minutes. really asking people to be careful.

farther east, absolute whiteout. buffalo, new york, and parts of upstate, officials there declaring a state of emergency as feet of lake-effect snow, fresh snow, dumped on the area. some parts of the suburbs getting 18 inches. a time lapse showed how quickly it came in. officials, again, declaring a state of emergency, closing things like city hall and government buildings early. even shutting down a local highway because the roads were an absolute mess. we saw a semi-truck that stalled and crashed into the barrier on a highway. people asking to be careful out there this morning. back in chicago, it is topping out at a toasty high of 22 degrees, craig. >> at least it'll warm up in the windy city. maggie, thank you so much. negative 12. >> maggie, you win. you win. that is cold. and hurts. >> yes. >> al? >> you win by losing. >> exactly. are we going to get relief? >> we will. as maggie alluded to, 160 million people now from new mexico and arizona all the way

to upstate new york and as far south as central florida. cold watches, cold warnings. feels like 5 in wichita. 9 in albuquerque. 18 in new orleans. new york city feels like zero. today, temperature highs will be anywhere from 10 to 25 degrees below average. houston at 43. 28 in norfolk. chicago, 23 degrees, as maggie said. it'll warm up. it's still 8 degrees below average. tomorrow morning, one more night of record lows from the gulf coast all the way to the carolinas. a windchill of 6 tomorrow morning in boston. 18 in st. louis. 26 in houston. but we will see a gradual warmup. 40s in louisville by saturday. 30 in new york city. 39 in kansas city. and we still have 13 milli people in winter weather alerts. that storm system moving away. the good news is it pulls off. you can see the radar bringing that snow off the coast and the morning rain. the cold temperatures, though,

in central florida, if you are at universal, you will have to bundle up because it is awfully chilly. guys? >> we will come back to you in a few moments. breaking overnight, nine people have been detained for questioning after that deadly hotel fire at a popular ski resort in northwest turkey. 76 people were killed when flamed ripped through the hotel early in the morning. 50 others were hurt. the building, as you can see there, engulfed in smoke, making it hard for guests to find the fire escape. some guests used sheets to climb down from their windows. officials say the fire may have started in the hotel's restaurant. although, the exact cause is still under investigation. also this morning president trump facing backlash for his first moves back in office, including those sweeping pardons of january 6th rioters. and steps to overhaul the immigration system. new overnight, the president is also ordering all federal workers in diversity, equity and inclusion roles to be placed on paid leave.

nbc's senior white house correspondent garrett haake joins us with more. garrett, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. president trump advancing his project of reshaping the federal government overnight with several new actions meant to ultimately eliminate diversity programs in federal agencies. his administration is ramping up its immigration actions and facing lawsuits from democratic ags. but it is the decision to offer massive pardons for people convicted of january 6th related crimes that is having the most controversial impact. this morning, if fallout from president trump's first action in office, including new pardons in washington. the president issued another executive order, placing all federal employees in diversity, equity and inclusion roles on paid leave and promising to close all dei-related programs. for much of trump's first day in office, focused on his controversial decision to pardon or commute the sentence of every person convicted of a crime related to the january 6th

attack on the capitol. the move encompassing those that electroshocked police officers, dragging them through the capitol, and assaulting them with their own equipment. overnight, two top police organizations, including the fraternal order of police that endorsed trump, condemning the pardons and commutcommutati writing, quote, it devalues the sacrifices made by law enforcement and sends a dangerous message. the president asked by nbc's peter alexander about one defendant dj rodriguez who pled guilty and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. >> why does he deserve a pardon? >> well, i don't know. was it a pardon? we're looking at commutes and pardons. >> pardons. >> we'll look at everything. >> reporter: on "morning joe," fanone running through a list of those guilty of attacking him as he seeks protective orders. >> daniel rodriguez, sentenced to more than 12 years in prison after he pled guilty and

admitted to using a taser device, applying it to the base of my skull. >> reporter: as republicans on capitol hill were questioned about the move. >> the president's own decision. >> reporter: some expressing hesitation on the inclusion of violent offenders. >> to me, i just can't agree. it was surprising to me it was a blanket pardon. >> reporter: the bureau of prisons releasing 211 individuals in approximately 12 hours. among those pardoned, oath keepers leader stewart rhodes, and former proud boys head, tarrio, both were serving lengthy sentences for seditious conspiracy. joe biden preemptively pardoned members of that committee, including former congresswoman liz cheney as well as anthony fauci and mark milley. none of those people have been charged or on vikt convicted of any crime. he also pardoned members of his own family. craig? >> garrett, let me ask you, while i have you, about

something else here. new developments on president trump's nomination for secretary of defense, pete hegseth. what more can you tell us about those developments? >> reporter: very interesting movement on the hill yesterday. senators received an affidavit from pete hegseth's former sister-in-law, danielle, accusing him of threatening conduct toward his second wife, samantha seg hegseth. this came after staffers from a senator on the services committee had been in contact with her and democratic senator jack reed saw a statement from her on her personal knowledge about mr. hegseth's fitness for this position. an escape plan and a code word samantha developed in case she ever felt the need to get away from her then husband, which apparently happened once. hegseth's lawyer dismissed the allegations. samantha hegseth, for her part, said in a statement, quote, there was no physical abuse in her marriage. we should also note in 2021, both pete and samantha hegseth signed a court document saying neither of them claimed to be the victim of domestic abuse. craig?

>> thank you. garrett haake at the white house. let's bring in hallie jackson, our senior washington correspondent. good morning. let's talk about these pardons. president trump got push back from both sides of the aisle. police unions seem to be furious, some of which endorsed him. is this more blow back than he anticipated? >> think of the scope of these pardons, savannah. that is what it comes down to, including some in president trump's own party. he was repeatedly asked during the campaign, before he took office, about whether he'd pardon these violent offenders spececifically now, president trump himself never explicitly ruled that out, even when he was asked. but you did see signals from his own vice president, jd vance, who said in his words, obviously, people who committed violence that day should not be pardoned. the president himself was asked last night by our own peter alexander about those comments because, as we've seen, he did, in fact, issue those full pardons to some of those vings,

individuals, many of them, and why vice president vance was wrong to suggest that violent offenders should not be pardoned. that was the question. the president said it is because of the time they served behind bars, in some cases only a fraction of their total sentences, adding their lives have been ruined, savannah. >> some officials are saying these first few days are meant to be shock and awe. on that topic, dei. diversity, equity and inclusion programs that the president railed against, he signed an executive order over the night that has a real impact there. >> it sure does. and it is starting today, savannah. 5:00 eastern, close of business today. that is when workers in those offices will be told they are on basically immediate paid leave. contracts will be terminated. trainings are supposed to end. the social media accounts, web pages are getting pulled down, as well. the white house also wants to know if there is an attempt to, in their words, use coded language to try to disguise some of these programs. this is something that the president talked about on the campaign trail, and it is a big

reversal of a biden era push. keep in mind, conservatives have been critical of the dei programs, not just in the federal government but think of the private sector, too, the corporations. the white house press secretary in a statement overnight says this is all -- talk about promises made, promises kept. she said this is part of a pledge by the president to return america to, in her words, a merit-based society where people are hired based on their skills and not the color of their skin. >> hallie jackson in washington, thank you. a lot more to get to, including the baseball hall of fame welcoming more inductees into coopertown. that big announcement coming last night. ichiro suzuki fell just one vote shy of unanimous selection. he played most of his career with the mariners anand owns t record for most hits in a single season. >> who else? starting pitcher cc sabathia. did i say that right? >> sabathia, yeah. >> i'm a tennis fan.

a very good morning to you. it is 726 right now. i'm laura garcia. here's a look at our top stories. one person is in the hospital. several more are looking for temporary housing after a fire in a south bay apartment complexit happened last night on union avenue near the pruneyard shopping center in campbell. firefighters say three people were rescued, one suffering from smoke inhalation. at one point, a stairway collapsed, briefly trapping first responders on the second floor. four apartments are a total loss. two more sustained damage. firefighters also managed to rescue a dog, but say a cat did not survive. the cause of the fire is unknown. i'm bob redell. the trump administration has made it easier for ice officers to go after undocumented immigrants. under a new policy, those federal agents are now allowed to arrest people in so-called sensitive areas like schools and churches. now, coincidentally, later this morning in oakland, leaders from that city, county, state and federal government, along with

but the two sides have very different take-aways when it comes to what that video proves. >> chloe melas has the latest on this. >> good morning. there are more lays to this ongoing story. baldoni's attorney released ten minutes of footage showing he did nothing appropriate, they say. but lively's team is countering that saying it shows the exact opposite. this footage, which appears in the finished version film "it ends with us" appears to show the two stars discussing how to play the scene as they slow dance, in this brief montage. bal baldoni's team say the takes shot in may 2023 showed that what took place on set doesn't match claims of sexual harassment that lively made in a legal complaint last month. according to the complaint, min scene, mr. baldoni was caressing her with his mouth in a way that had nothing to do with their

roles. the two stars can be heard talking about production details while playing to the camera as a couple in love. the complaint says baldoni, quote, dragged his lips from her ear and down to her neck as he said, it smells so good. baldoni's representatives say it proves that it didn't happen. >> smells good. >> well, it's not that. it's the body makeup. >> reporter: lively's legal team firing back in a statement. quote, justin baldoni and his team may hope this stunt gets ahead of the damaging evidence against him. but the video itself is damning. lively's representatives say the footage corroborates her account of what happened, arguing it shows baldoni attempting to kiss her, kissing her forehead, rubbing his face and mouth against her neck, flicking with his tongue, caressing her, telling her how good she smells and talking with her out of character, adding that no woman

should have to take defensive measures to avoid being touched by their employer without her consent. the newly released videos follow a lawsuit filed by baldoni last week against lively, her pr team, and husband ryan reynolds for defamation and extortion. lively's legal team calling it the next chapter in the abuser playbook. a bitter battle where both sides believe the same scene tells a very different story. >> baldoni's team says it has more footage. thi there are lawsuits, but this is a public relations battle at this point. >> this is getting messy. baldoni's legal team are going to release more behind the scenes footage. i told you last week, that website, they are planning to put it up this week. it's for the public to look at text messages and emails between baldoni and blake lively. >> why? >> between other people. because they really care, like you said, about the court of public opinion. obviously, they care about the court of law because there's

the next 60 days. >> nice to meet you. >> reporter: but marissa has found support from a grass roots network of moms. all of it started by another l.a. mom, lisa kahn in the hectic early days of the fires when an out of state friend reached out to her on instagram offering to send baby clothes to a mom in need. >> i posted on instagram on my story. within maybe five minutes i had a mom reach out saying, i need it. >> repeporter: aer that, more women contacted her and the moms helping moms project was born. >> i made a form, and it started getting shared all over the place. mom groups in nashville, in new york, in vancouver. by the end of the first day, we had over 2,500 submissions. now we're at over 5,000. >> reporter: what are you hearing from those moms who are asking for this help? >> they need stuff, and they do not have time to go to donation centers and sift through things. so we make a match that allows the mom that's helping to send things directly to their doorstep.
