in today's modern parenting, we're talking about age gaps between siblings. >> the gap is growing. it's something "the atlantic" covered. the larger age gaps have opened the door on a new dynamic, one focussed on mentorship. joining us now is robby ludwig. good to see you again. >> good to be back. >> there was a study fairly recently in 2020 that looked at the age gap between siblings and found they on average are four years apart. what do you think is behind that change? >> well, there are several reasons. in part the family dynamics are changing due to divorce. many people are rethinking how they want to have kids due to finances. technology has allowed us to think about having kids later in

life and also contraceptives are highly effective right now. all of those factors, plus financial concerns, are leading people to think about families in a very different way. >> we're also seeing more blended families. i wonder, withth this widening e gap for siblings what is it doing to sibling relationships and the family dynamic? >> there's positives they found. for the older sibling they tend to do very well academically because they're not fighting for resources and they have a lot of one-on-one time which is helpful for them. for younger kids they don't know the impact it has on them yet. one of the challenges is to think about how you bring kids together when developmentally they may not be in the same school or share the same friends. so it's really thinking creatively how to spend time individually with each child and to create new activities so everybody can feel like they're
