north of los angeles. another 23,000 are under evacuation warnings. the hughes fire exploding to more than 10,000 acres since it began late wednesday morning near castaic lake. it is now 14% contained. the fast-moving flames threatening homes, buildings, even schools, sending students running. some area schools are closed today, while others have moved activities inside, as air quality worsens. this, as many residents in the evacuation zone hose down their homes, concerned with the bone dry conditions and high winds that have plagued the region for more than two weeks. >> reporter: how worried are you about all this? >> very, obviously. >> my wife, my animals were ready to go. >> the faa has issued flight restrictions over the area, including unauthorized drones so aircrews can attack the blaze from the sky. according to the california national guard, every modular aerial firefighting system in

the u.s. has been launched to fight the fire. millions remain under fire alerts this morning. let's turn to michelle grossman who's got the latest for us. >> unfortunately, we're stuck in this pattern. we're going to be stuck in this pattern for quite a bit, too. we are looking at 10 million people under red flag warnings. we could see winds gusting 40 mile-per-hour, 50 miles per hour. still gusty as we go throughout thursday. we're looking at very low humidity levels and places like santa clarita, santa ana, temecula, escondido, palm springs included in this where we're looking at red flag warnings on this thursday. we're looking at a critical risk with dangerous rapid wildfire possible once begin today. same places, santa clara, temecula. now as we go throughout this weekend, we do have a bit of good news. we will see some rain. it's not going to be a lot.

migrant border crossings. including blocking asylum seekers from entering the u.s. >> our thanks to peter for that report. this morning, a federal appeals court is set to hear arguments around louisiana's law requiring public schools to display the ten commandments in classrooms. the law was meant to go into effect on january 1st, but it's currently blocked in five school districts as the challenge works its way through the courts. in november, a district court blocked the law saying it was overtly religious founding of u.s. law. a nashville high school is closed for the week as the

community mourns the latest school shooting. a 17-year-old shooter opened fire in the school cafeteria yesterday, killing one student and wounding another before taking his own life. jesse kirsch has the story. >> reporter: these were the chaotic moments deadly gunfire erupted inside antioch high school. followed by the realization of what had happened. police say just after 11:00 a.m., 17-year-old solomon henderson, armed with a pistol, opened fire inside his nashville area school's cafeteria, killing a 16-year-old. >> we believe there are materials out there, maybe if someone said something more could have been done. >> reporter: investigators don't know if this was a targeted attack but say there was no ongoing threat to the community. hours after the attack, students

evacuated by the bus load. this teen says the shooter was her classmate. >> he was not a kid that you would think would do something like that. he stayed on task. he did his work. he was quiet. >> reporter: one more describing a call from her panicking son. >> he said, mom, they're shooting. i said where are you? he said i'm outside now. i said run and hide. i'm on my way. >> we hid behind the garbage cans. we saw people getting shot on the ground, bleeding and stuff. it's heartbreaki face. meanwhile, no motive has been announced. back to you. >> jesse, thank you. at least four people have died after a rare winter storm battered much of the south this week. the severe weather wreaking havoc on roadways across parts of georgia, causing crashes and leaving cars at a stand still on one highway for more than 12 hours. in dekalb county more than 100 vehicles were abandoned on the

road. officials urging residents to shelter in place. in louisiana, cities were blanketed in snow with a historic ten inches sweeping across new orleans. a boil water advisory has been issued for parts of the city due to a drop in water pressure. meanwhile in florida, early reports find as much as ten inches falling in some spots, shattering the state's all-time snowfall record of four inches set in 1954. let's check back in with michelle grossman, tracking the potential for record temperatures in the region. >> that's right, hi there, frances. record low temperatures across the gulf coast into the southeast. another cold day before we start to see temperatures ease just a bit. 32 million americans under some sort of bitterly cold alert. extreme cold advisory, extreme cold warning from new orleans to jacksonville. we're looking at temperatures below freezing in many spots right now. of course in duluth still really cold, minus 4. but notice to the south. 36 degrees in houston.

leading the news this morning. a potential landmark case. justices are hearing arguments over a deadly police shooting in texas in 2016. laura jarrett tells us the possible nationwide impact. >> reporter: it happened in just second. ashton barnes pulled over on the side of this texas highway. the rental car he was driving briefed to have outstanding toll violations. officer roberto felix jr. appearing on the driver's side door soon drawing his gun, prompting the man to take ff, he killed barnes at the scene. now nearly a decade later, barnes' mother janice hughes hoping the u.s. supreme court will change how courts treat these deadly police encounters nationwide. >> i really, honestly, know that in my heart, ashton did not deserve to die that day.
