out near the mexico border, torching more than 600 acres. it is still 0% contained but not near any structures. california governor gavin newsom has signed a $2.5 billion relief package to help with the recovery in the los angeles area. >> people feel helpless, but not everybody feels hopeless. and i think this is about instilling a sense of hopefulness. >> today president trump is set to tour the catastrophic wildfire damage in the los angeles area after visiting western north carolina, which was ravaged by hurricane helene in september. nbc meteorologist michelle grossman will join us in a few minutes with the latest on the fire risk in southern california. we are entering day five of the new trump administration, and we're starting to see the impact of the immigration crackdown. video shows several federal agents entering homes in east boston. federal authorities would not

comment on the operation. neighbors told our boston station that at least one person was detained. nbc's chris pollone joins me now. good morning. there are new details about enforcement happening in new jersey's largest city. >> reporter: frances, that's right. good morning to you. the mayor of newark, new jersey plans to hold a news conference today about a reported immigration raid by i.c.e. in a statement, the mayor said agents raided a local establishment, detaining undocumented residents, as well as citizens. the mayor says newark will not stand by while people are unlawfully terrorized. an i.c.e. spokesperson said agents may encounter citizens while doing field work and may request identification. i.c.e. says it made 538 arrests on thursday. for comparison, in the month of september during the biden administration, i.c.e. arrested an average of 282 per day. president trump's agenda has a new legal roadblock.

a federal judge has temporarily blocked the order on birthright citizenship. president trump is promising to appeal. >> they've put it before a certain judge in seattle, i guess, right? and there's no surprises with that judge. >> reporter: that legal setback does not stop president trump from signing more executive orders. overnight he ordered the full release of classified files related to the assassinations of president john f. kennedy, robert f. kennedy and civil rights leader martin luther king jr. the president saying people have waited for decades, and now everything will be revealed. those files won't immediately be made public. officials have been ordered to come up with a plan for their release. next week, marco rubio's first trip abroad as secretary of state takes him to latin america and panama, after president trump threatened to

seize control of the panama canal in his inaugural address. >> china is operating the panama canal, and we didn't give it to china. we gave it to panama, and we're taking it back. >> for more on this, let's get to matt bodner. good morning, matt. what is rubio hoping to accomplish in panama? >> reporter: frances, good morning. rubio will certainly have a lot on his plate in this first foreign visit. panama is one of america's strongest allies in the region, but it has also been the focus of president trump for several months now. particularly, the panama canal. in his inauguration speech monday, trump said china has taken over the canal and that the united states was going to take it back. both china and panama have pushed back on these claims, with panama insisting it is operating the waterway in a neutral capacity. the u.s. views the panama canal as a strategically important access point into the pacific. and rubio's task will be to navigate these difficult waters. rubio said he hopes the u.s. would be able to resolve these

security concerns around the canal once and for all. china, for the record, has no official stake in the canal, but it has been purchasing and developing nearby ports. furthermore, at least five chinese state-owned companies have set up shop along the canal itself. and some u.s. commanders have warned that these facilities could be easily flipped into military use in the event of a conflict. according to the u.s. state department, however, rubio's trip will not exclusively focus on the panama canal. among other things, rubio will be looking to address broader migration issues in the region and taking that message on tour to several other nations as well. those nations include guatemala, el salvador, costa rica and the dominican republic. president trump has suggested that ukraine should not have fought back against the russian invasion nearly three years ago. in an interview on fox news, mr. trump told sean hannity, quote, zelenskyy was fighting a much bigger entity, much bigger, much more powerful. he should not have done that,

because we could have had a deal. while campaigning, president trump said i could end the war within a day of taking office. requests for comment were not responded to. this is the 80 anniversary of the liberation of auschwitz. nbc's jay gray is in auschwitz ahead of the international holocaust remembrance day on monday. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, frances. auschwitz is part museum, part memorial. it marks the horrors of the past and has lessons that are still very vital to today. the pictures, eight decades later still somber, haunting. these images bring back painful memories. >> i think you remember the smell, the foul, disgusting

smell that i found out later is the smell of burning bodies. and i remember going out, looking at trash cans to find moldy potato skins to eat to survive. >> reporter: this is michael bournstein 80 years ago, a prisoner in auschwitz, often hidden by his mother and grandmother. more than 200,000 children and young prisoners did not survive. >> this is not only a museum. it's a very special place where people suffered so much. >> reporter: as the world pauses to remember the horror that took place here and the liberation of auschwitz 80 years ago, bornstein is going back. >> i don't like to go back, believe me. i have no desire to be in >> reporter: he makes the trip

full recoveries after that dramatic hours-long standoff with a man later found dead. officer were responding to a suicide in progress when 46-year-old brandon pulos opened fire. he struck one officer, barricaded himself and shot six more. authorities say pulos had been arrested last week and was out on bond. police are investigating whether his cause of death was self-inflicted or from police fire. there is newly-released body cam footage of the men police linked to a robbery at the home of bengals' quarterback joe burrow. the video shows ohio state troopers searching the men's car. inside, they found tools for breaking glass, a lsu shirt, where burrow played in college and one of the suspects was wearing a bengals hat. four men from chile have been charged. there is some relief on the way to california. michelle grossman is tracking rain on the way. good morning, michelle. >> good morning, frances. yeah. so glad to be able to say that. we are looking at an area of low pressure moving in that will

first, a record day on wall street. the s&p 500 hit a new high after the president's address to global business and political leaders at davos. cnbc's charlotte reed is here with those details. good morning, charlotte. >> good morning. well, yes, the u.s. stocks getting a boost yesterday with the s&p 500 reaching its first record since early december. and of course that was after the president said to the leaders of the world economic forum in davos that i would demand interest rates drop immediately. this indicates there could be a showdown between president trump and the chair of the federal reserve jerome powell. the fed recently signaled slower interest rate cuts with some concerned about the impact of trump policies like tariffs and what it could have on inflation. in the same speech, trump said he would ask saudi arabia and the other opec nations to lower oil prices, and he suggested
