angeles. this is like a nuclear weapon went off. what's happened to los angeles right now? at six? president trump visiting disaster zones. this as southern california residents begin to pick up the pieces. the new threat. homeowners are now facing when it comes to building back. plus, immigration raids start across the u.s. new details on operation in on the east coast. as anxiety is growing in the migrant community and san francisco getting ready to celebrate the lunar new year, i'll take you on a walk through chinatown for a look at how many are getting ready this weekend for the celebrations to come. this is today in the bay. good morning to you on this friday. thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we're going to check that friday morning commute with mike in just a moment. but cinthia pimentel is in for kerry and
6:01 am
she's got a look at our forecast. it is a clear and crisp start out there for this friday. 35 right now in walnut creek to some low 40s from san jose, palo alto and in san francisco. notice that we are starting off with not that much cloud cover in the sky, but that will change as we go on into about the lunchtime hour. first trekking through the north bay, bringing some big weekend changes ahead in the form of some much needed rain. we haven't had rain in about three weeks so we need that. mountain snow is also coming to the bay area, possibly the sierra and down into southern california as well. one part of the bay area, also under a wind advisory. so i'll show you those details coming up in a few minutes. mike, we're checking back at the bay bridge toll plaza. yeah, the metering lights are on. the volume is starting to increase a bit. as far as the traffic volumes seen on this camera, but we do not see the backup. it's just after 6:00, 601. we see a little slowing brake tapping across. because of that volume, we lose the lanes as you head up the incline just past the
6:02 am
metering lights. a little slowing as a crew comes eastbound on 580. typical this time every weekday morning. west 37. same thing for that little bit of slowing. but look over here. concord, walnut creek, moraga, lafayette. no problem there. caldecott. clear. we do have a new incident on 280, just off 101, but that first slowing for 101 is easing up already. back to you. thanks, mike. today, president donald trump expected to visit fire ravaged disaster areas of los angeles. but it's not clear whether governor gavin newsom will be by his side this as today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us from the newsroom this morning talking about the progress and prospects for federal funds, chris. well, good morning to you, marcus and laura. so in just the last hour, the white house released president trump's schedule for his l.a. visit, and we're not allowed to share the specifics. that's pretty typical, but we can confirm that he will be in california later today. the president is likely to see the disaster even before he lands in l.a. that newest fire, the hughes fire, burning near castaic lake north of santa

clarita, exploded in size over two days, forcing 31,000 people from their homes as it burned more than 10,000 acres. containment now at 36%. the palisades fire, the first and still the biggest of this firestorm, is now 75% contained. the eaton fire in altadena and pasadena. good news here now, 95% contained now, since this whole firestorm started two weeks ago, 28 people died and more than 16,000 structures were destroyed. in all, there are 255 wildfires burning in california right now. governor newsom just signed a $2.5 billion recovery package for la, he says unanimously, with bipartisan support and with no conditions attached. the governor has said he hopes congress and the president will do the same. but based on what the president has said in the past, that doesn't seem to be part of the plan. but we want to get these dollars out in real time, so there's no

anxiety and stress. i don't think we should give california anything until they let water flow down. although the president and the governor have cooperated in crises before, as in the camp fire in paradise, you see them here together in 2018. this time the governor says he has not yet heard from the white house about this visit. so more recently in discussing fema, the president has said he would like states to take care of their own problems. as the white house clears us to release more details about today's trip, we will share them with you. but of course, you know that we'll be covering that out of l.a, laura. yes, very much so. thank you very much. well, new at six. immigration and customs enforcement agents raided a business in newark, new jersey, in an effort to detain unauthorized immigrants. according to the mayor of new jersey, ice agents detained unauthorized residents as well as citizens without producing a warrant. the mayor will hold a press conference later this morning. he calls the aquarius

and plain violation of the fourth amendment. the action follows at least a thousand arrests made during the first week of president trump's time in office. state health leaders are expanding testing for dangerous toxins. a week after a major fire broke out at the world's largest battery energy storage facility in moss landing. city leaders are asking the california public utilities commission to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of that fire at the vistra battery storage facility. the legislation was introduced this week that would prevent energy companies from seeking approval at the state level to use the land and build companies, essentially bypassing local decision making. this bill is saying, as we would no longer allow an opt in process for what's commonly known as streamlining, we want to make sure that local communities have a voice in land use decisions, particularly around something this volatile. the health officials also say that the cleanup could take weeks, if not

months. south bay advocates today plan to throw their support behind an upcoming scheduled debate over banning the installation of artificial athletic turf. santa clara county supervisors last year weighed the idea of banning plastic turf for all county owned properties, but they tabled the plan before it ever got to a vote. next tuesday, they'll pick up that debate again. the ban has the support of county health leaders, who argue that chemicals in fake grass have been linked to cancer, but opponents say there are too few grass fields. a news conference is scheduled for noon. also today, a south bay nonprofit is cutting the ribbon on its recently renovated homeless shelter. the bucardo reception center is located on little orchard street in san jose. it's also considered santa clara county's largest homeless shelter, with room for 250 people. the group home first says $150,000 donation funded the renovation, which will offer more privacy and what the nonprofit calls a better overall

experience. 606 this morning. let's take a live look out walnut creek there, dark and early for us this morning. cynthia has a look at that forecast. and look, if you've been waiting to put on some of those nice coats, i guess this week has been perfect morning time anyway. absolutely. right now, let's stay there in the east bay. check on martinez, walnut creek's neighbor. we are starting off clear and cool in the mid 30s. we're going to keep those cool numbers pretty much for the rest of the day, compared to the lovely day that we had yesterday. we'll top out at 60 degrees there in martinez. so low 60s for the east bay up in towards the north bay along the peninsula coast as well, and down here into the south bay. we're going to knock it off about five degrees compared to those 70s yesterday. we'll do the upper 60s. watch this drop. here is the winter jackets for tomorrow. maybe staying in bed a little longer throughout the day as we drop down into the 50s. that's going to stay with us into sunday as well with some rain chances. so i'll show you the outlook coming up in a few

minutes. mike wants to help people get out the door with those cheaper gas prices. yeah, we're trying to find those cheapest gas prices in our unlikely low to start off this friday. happy friday, san francisco, you are there with 359 at gaugh on mission street. that's just off 280 around alemany boulevard in the south bay. let's go to the lowest there where we have 367 for santa clara county. that's at san jose's quick serve on alum rock avenue. then in contra costa county, it's 375 for the lowest in that county. concord superstop of course, in concord that has the low at their shop on willow pass road, you check your county of course. more specifically, check close to where you need to fill up gasbuddy.com on the roadways. we'll look in. most of those roadways are in the green area ase expect lighter traffic flow on a friday. the issue getting off o of the san mateo bridge 92 at 101 cleared about a half hour ago, and we just had the full clear for that off ramp. north 101 at sfo. no problems on the peninsula. easy light drive there getting to the peninsula side, slowing across the bay bridge and of course highway 37 out of vallejo.
6:09 am
typical slower spots. only those two sections at the bay bridge, even though the metering lights are on, the slowing i on the span and not at the toll plaza just yet. back to you. thank you mike. well, this weekend, san francisco's chinatown will be bustling with people getting ready to celebrate the lunar new year. well, next here on today in the bay. from decorations to those little red envelopes, we're going to take a look at the traditions taking over the city by the bay. costco, under pressure to get rid of its dui program. and it said no way out to the futures this morning as well. looks like it's going to be a quiet end to our friday. but man, we've set rec

friday. gilroy. freezing right now. clear skies. we're going to keep those 30s around right there. when school and work start at 8 a.m, we go on into the afternoon. yes, some clouds will be rolling around, but temperatures still on the mild side there in the upper 60s. major changes ahead for the weekend. we'll track the rain together coming up in a few minutes. and right now we're looking at fremont. over on the right side. i saw a flurry of activity on surface streets just north of the tesla plant. typical this time of day, but the freeway itself, 880, moves very nicely. headlights into the south bay should pick up the volume there over the next half hour. we'll check out the east bay with the build as well for

friday. lighter traffic. well, good morning and very happy friday to you. s&p 500 willpen this morning at a new record. it's been a long string of wins for the market. standard and poor's index hit a new record 13 times last year. jetblue says it will start accepting venmo as payment for tickets. jp moan chase says it made more money last quarter than any other bank ever in all of history, and it gave its ceo a raise $39 million for jamie dimon. that doesn't make him the highest paid banker. financial filings show he's now tied with the ceo of goldman sachs. costco says no to changes in its da programs. areholders voted overwhelmingly to keep da in place. this, according to the ceo, despite outside pressure to end it. apple recently voted against ending da as well. the government. the federal government, though, has suspended workers involved in

die programs with pay with the intention of laying them off. it's also warned employees not to hide da programs under other names, and warned employees they must report their fellow workers if they suspect them of working on diversity, equity and inclusion. donald trump signed a long awaited cryptocurrency order at the oval office on thursday. san francisco crypto investor david sacks looking on but the crypto world didn't particularly react. there was not much change in the price of bitcoin. trump, who recently as recently as four years ago called crypto a scam, is now calling for a crypto stockpile. a national crypto stockpile. people who buy bitcoin like that because a big pile of bitcoin held in a vault means they're available. bitcoin would be worth more. the president made a virtual appearance at the world economic forum in davos, where he said he wanted the u.s. fed to lower interest rates quickly.
6:15 am
i'll demand that interest rates drop immediately, and likewise, they should be dropping all over the world. interest rates should follow us. economists say they don't expect that to happen, that interest rates will remain high because of the worry of more inflation, partially caused by president trump's tariffs and just overall spending. you've seen this scene. billionaire investors tell trump they're going to spend hundreds of billions of dollars in the united states. spending is a price pressure that causes inflation. but, you know, things like inflation and high gas prices don't have to be bad because that's just a sign of a good economy. just like you can't find a low priced house in a really wonderful place. you know, you ask yourself, why is that house so low? you know, it's a trade off. yeah. but consumers, boy, we like those lower interest rates. yes, absolutely. especially realtors too. it's not happening. yeah. all right. thanks, scott. all right. well, you know, chinese new year is the cup coming wednesday. and it is. i'm sure
6:16 am
you've heard the year of the snake. and this weekend, many people will stock up on all their decorations, getting ready for the celebrations and to spend some time with family. i actually got a chance to visit san francisco's chinatown to see what some of those cultural traditio are all about. that's why i was like black eyed peas. like i'm very southern. just kind of how my family is and where, you know, the traditions. so that's why i love talking to people about traditions. oh, well, i'm so excited for you to learn about, like, how, i don't know, our cultures probably intersect quite a bit. very much so, yeah. cynthia huey owns on waverly, a small business in chinatown. right now, streets are bustling with activity as vendors, locals, and even tourists gear up to celebrate the year of the snake. and this year, being the wood snake, i think it's a year that's really going to be marked by being a creative year. a year of resilience, a year of abundance. lunar new year decorations are
6:17 am
everywhere. signs of good luck and prosperity. now this is pretty cool. this is kind of what we will see during this celebration. yes, including asian star fantasy on grant avenue. and this you said this will go like in the front door. yes. so you generally want to hang it like near an entry way because you're ushering in luck and also like taking good luck out with you when you're when you're leaving. so the red envelopes are right over here. the red envelope, that's something. whether you know much about it or not, i know a red envelope. something's inside. yeah. what's inside is money. ultimately, what each red envelope carries is the hope for wealth in the new year. you know, you take pride in the types of envelopes you pick out and, you know, going to the bank and getting new bills. and when you get married is when you start to give out envelopes. if you're single. will you'll be receiving a red envelope from many single receive married
6:18 am
give.. yes, yes. so do anybody does anyone try to stay single for a long time? i mean that might be a plus, you know. so cool. there, look, we've got more for you. so make sure you tune in to nbc bay area tonight at 530. you can watch more of my chinatown tour and what i learned about other simple traditions we all can do, like cleaning and getting the hair cut for the new year. that is, you can get all your chinese new year decorations at the flower market fair. this is going to happen in chinatown on grant avenue saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, and then on sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for a list of the celebrations around the bay area, just go to nbc bay area.com/lunar new year. and you know what? the thing about it is? it's so cool. i learned a little bit more about those fun facts of things. you know, the red envelope we always talk about. so i didn't know that. typically once you get married, you stop getting them. that's right. yeah. you need them. no, mike. keep it on. that's worth
6:19 am
more than the envelope i see. exactly. penalty is bigger. okay. but the thing about it. so it's really cool to see that that, you know, once you get married, you don't get one. so if you're still single, like me, or at least not married anyway. so are you telling us to give you some red envelopes? i'm saying married, mary. married? not married. i don't know, i'm just saying. but we'll have more of that tonight at 530. make sure you tune in to nbc bay area, then. yeah. exciting. yeah. very nice and fun out there. i did a lot of fun. it's always wonderful to stroll through there and all the shops. so iconic. people come from all over the world. they really do schaar neighborhoods. and this weekend we are going to be in for a cooler stroll around the neighborhoods right now in oakland, waking up to 40 degree good morning to you. we're going to keep those coats around and see the 30s and 40s continuing here through 7 a.m. and then into the middle of the day. once you start maybe heading out of the office a little bit early, more of those clouds are going to start to come in, and temperatures in the upper 50s into the afternoon.
6:20 am
we're going to knock off a couple of degrees compared to yesterday's lovely day that felt like spring. well, we're trending more towards winter this weekend. low 60s up there in wine country, 58 in san mateo to those low. 60s continuing out there in livermore, to those upper 60s down here in the south bay. so none of those 70s on the map like we had yesterday. what you'll also notice picking up later tonight will be the winds, especially for our north bay interior valleys. i'll keep an eye for the weekend if the east bay mountains will need this, but you'll feel those winds at around 15 to 25 miles an hour, possibly some tree and power issues. so prepare for that and prepare for getting a little bit of some spotty rain action. as we go on into our saturday, we see the low pressure system taking that counterclockwise turn. it will really be hit or miss as we go on into saturday afternoons, so maybe don't cancel your plans completely just yet. going on into sunday overnight hours, we could also
6:21 am
see a light dusting of snow for mount hamilton, maybe up towards the northern part of sonoma counties into lake county and keep that scattered activity for our sunday plans as well. how much of it will we get? it will be really trace amounts of rain. we usually see more of it in january, but anything that we get about a quarter of an inch down here for the south bay is welcome news. other places with wewelcome ns will be down into southern california. that moisture will be i increasin winds will finally turn on that onshore direction, and we'll get some showers down there to even some mountain snow for places that have been just hard hit with those wildfires. so we'll continue to watch that for the weekend. our 7-day forecast inland valleys 60s today turn to 50s. chilly, breezy, that spotty shower, maybe even an embedded thunderstorm in there. we'll watch that and send those alerts. good time to download our free app so you can track the weather with me and san francisco, the peninsula, over the next couple of days. also, temperatures taking a tumble and we prepare to bring out that rain jacket just in case. mike, let's see how our friday commute is going. look, there it is. the backup at the bay bridge just
6:22 am
starting to form right on schedule, about six 2621 now over here at the bay bridge toll plaza with the metering lights have been turned on for about 15 20 minutes. there is some slowing through berkeley. so there's the build, the volume slowly increasing, highway 37 seeing a little more slowing out of vallejo and now. 242 highway 4 through concord, pleasant hill down toward walnut creek. caldecott still fine, no problem for the 680 corridor through the tri-valley. isabel showed a little slowing right around vallecitos typical, and still only hayward has a slowing on the nimitz. back to you. thanks, mike. coming up next on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds. we have two viewers doing battle with companies with one thing in common they need our help. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. nbc bay area responds. next. what's up? i'm timothy shelman, and i'll be the host and musical guest this week on snl. congrats on your oscar nomination. thank you sarah, i appreciate it. did you know i have an oscar? i didn't know you were in a movie. no, i did a

of lousy customer service. luckily, our response team has once again helped out to resolve those problems. consumer investigator chris moore joins us now with a few of the recent cases. happy friday. let's start with devin in moraga. she spent $120 on concert tickets. we know what happened next. they disappeared from her online account and she couldn't get the company to restore the the concert was fast approaching, so she contacted us. we contacted the company. it finally found her missing $120 tickets the day before the show. next, amy in los altos was tumbling with an appliance repair company over her dryer. she said she was due a $528 refund because a repair man's fix failed, but she never got a straight answer, so she tapped us. we contacted the company. it then sent her a check for her $528. join amy, devin and others. share your consumer issues online. snap t qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. have a great

weekend. you too chris. well, next, here are the top stories we're following today, including president trump's order to end birthright citizenship is put on hold. the reason a judge is now blocking that move. a cybertruck here in the bay area vandalized with the word nazi. the reason why the owner of that cybertruck does not believe that she was the target take that up a little bit higher. you should feel that, like, right back here. oh, yeah, i felt that! good, that is so much better than last week. thanks, i've been doing 'em every night while i'm watching tv. - oh, what are you watching? it's a mystery. high quality care that meets you where you are.

they wanted to target the truck. i was shocked. i honestly, i immediately, for the first time in downtown redwood city, i felt scared. right now, at 530, a vandal targets a cybertruck on the peninsula and it was all caught on camera. the reason? the owner says she believes elon musk is to blame for the attack. we have brand new pictures of deportations this morning sent out by the white house itself. plus, someone in san francisco is painting curbs red to create fake no parking zones. the confusion it's causing for people now living with less street parking in the city. this is today in the bay. 630 on your friday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. time to get a look at that forecast for you on this friday. cinthia and kari this morning. taking a look at those cold temperatures out there. i know the day says friday, but the temperatures are
6:31 am
staying. oh my goodness, i can't get out of bed right now. temperatures in the 30s down here for the south bay. 36 in san martin. good morning to you. sitting at freezing right now through danville. just a little over that in livermore. and the 30s continue and low 40s up into the north bay. san rafael, we've got you in the 43 degrees right now in our valleys. we are going to see the sunshinee forhe first half of the day, warming temperatures just a little bit in livermore to the low 60s, and much more cloud cover into the afternoon. a gloomy friday night ahead with some rain for the weekend forecast. we'll track that and of course, some weekend events going on because life goes on, you know. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. back to you. thanks so much, cynthia. well, there's new pictures this morning of immigrants in handcuffs flown out of the united states. and as scott had mentioned, this is the white house actually posting these photos showing these off. essentially the new white house press secretary posting them on social media, saying the deportations have begun. now the
6:32 am
president has promised millions of people will be rounded up. the photographs show just a few dozen boarding a u.s. air force cargo plane. now it says davis on the tail. so the plane comes from arizona, but we don't know where the picture was taken or who the people are. the white house press secretary, though, saying president trump is sending a clear message to the entire world if you illegally enter the united states of america, you will face severe consequences. now, do keep in mind the u.s. deports people all the time. the statistics office at dhs says 4 million people were deported during the biden administration. i suspect you didn't hear biden's press secretary talking about it, because it would alienate parts of his own party. a federal court in seattle says donald trump's order changing the definition of birthright citizenship is unconstitutional. the federal judge in the case, appointed by ronald reagan, has put a temporary stop to the
6:33 am
implementation so the two sides can argue their case in court. the case brought by the state of california. and like a dozen other states, the judge saying, i've been on the bench for over four decades. i can't remember another case where the question presented is as clear as this one. this is a blatantly unconstitutional order. but to hear the judge from the bench say th in his 40 years as a judge, he has never seen something so blatantly unconstitutional, sets the tone for the seriousness of this effort. reaction from democratic leadership there. democrats also reacting strongly to trump's pardoning of people who attacked police officers at the capitol on january 6th. donald trump didn't care a bit about safer communities when he released those who were convicted of beating the out of police officers. so don't come to us
6:34 am
and talk about security and safer communities when you do that. the founder of the right wing oath keepers, who once said his only regret was capitol protesters, didn't bring rifles toward the capitol yesterday and said this about police officers. just because somebody puts on a uniform doesn't make them a good person. it doesn't mean that evevery action that they do is correct. i believe that the i believe that law enforcement that day, i believe they started a lot of the violence that happened. president trump made a virtual address to the world economic forum in davos, where he encouraged manufacturers to bring their factories to america, said he would demand lower interest rates as well, and then praised crown prince mohammed bin salman of saudi arabia. the united states, says mbs, as he's known, ordered the murder of washington post columnist jamal khashoggi. it's also reported today in the papers that saudi arabia will be investing at least $600 billion in america. but i'll be asking
6:35 am
the crown prince, who's a fantastic guy, to round it out to around 1 trillion. president biden called mbs a pariah after the murder, though biden then met with the prince and gave him a fist bump. a few years later, khashoggi went to the saudi embassy inurkey to get a marriage license. he was murdered, decapitated, his body cut into pieces inside that embassy. back here at home, former journalist pete hegseth could get the nomination he's looking for. as soon as today, president trump says he'll make a good secretary of defense. the republican led committee agreed, with the exception of susan collins from maine and lisa murkowski from alaska. and we do expect president trump here in california later today in los angeles to inspect fire damage. we have a live look at air force one at joint base andrews. as you can see it beginning to taxi again. he's headed to north carolina first. our team will have full coverage of the president's trip to los angeles throughout the day. laura. all
6:36 am
right. thank you very much, scott. it is 635 right now. new video shows the moment a vandal takes aim at a cybertruck on the peninsula. the owner of the vehicle is sure she knows why the truck was targeted, and she believes it was purely political. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live outside the tesla factory in fremont. now, first of all, bob, explain what tesla has to do with all this. well, tesla makes the cybertruck. soso the woman who owns this cybertruck here in the bay area doesn't, as you mentioned, laura, believe that she was the target of this vandal that whoever spray painted her truck was trying to send a message about elon musk, whose company builds the cybertruck. as i mentioned, this happened wednesday night in downtown redwood city. there was a tesla car nearby. the tesla car cameras recorded a man spray painting the word nazi on the side of the cybertruck, which happened to be parked right in front of that car. now, we spoke with amanda lopez, laura, who is
6:37 am
